I live in Michigan and it gets and stays friggen cold and I never do the things you are talking about, never had a problem.  The only thing I do is unhook the hoses and store them for the winter.  If you have a water pipe that is exposed to the air (as in not buried or anything) for several feet you might want to insulate it but other than that, the odds of your pipes freezing ae pretty darn close to zero.

It depends on whether or not your home is up on pier and beam....if so, then hence the need to wrap the pipes and do the drip. If your home is on a slab, it isn't necessary. The location is moot.

What about us folks with dirt floors?

Cannot help you there.   Put on extra leggins for the run to the out buildings!

It's getting thru the snowdrift to the firewood that's a hassle.

truth be told when mr none was away last year I forgot to remove that stuff/piping above ground on the sprinkler system, doggone if it didn't freeze and it cost about $250 to replace it ! So Anna's being smart, I just never put the new one on again, used my hand sprinkler

Blah- brussel sprouts are delicious, I roast them with a little olive oil, cracked pepper and lemon.........works great with asparagus, green beans, and new potatoes too !

Nonesuche - let me tell you what happened with your avatar.  I tried to put you on the tree and your butterfly was almost invisable.  As I was moving it around I happened to pass by the top of the tree and BINGO, was the perfect place!  I almost feel as though my hand was guided to just that spot

We have finals next week--much ballyhooing and moaning and printing of journal articles and stacks of books to trip over.  Yes, the end is near and I can smell the finish line!

oh and Blah, Martha Stewart was doing cutting boards on her show today, using woodburning tools. You need to get a website up with your wares !!

I have been building them like crazy, still have about 6 more to make before christmas.  I dont mind making them as gifts or for friends but I really dont think making a website and trying to make some money off them would really work.  I would have to find someone willing to pay a couple hundred dollards for one for it to be worth while.  Then again, check this out....
