October 28th, 2009Mourners wore pink and released balloons Wednesday to honor a slain 9-year-old from Missouri who was remembered at her funeral as a "precious little girl" who liked horses and music.

Murt friended her twitter today.  Why does he not take his news van to Jefferson City?  At least we could get some live coverage which beats the archaic reporting coming out of there now.

Elizabeth Olten Suspect Hearing Open to the Public

COLE COUNTY - A Cole County judge ruled the certification hearing for the suspected killer of Elizabeth Olten will be open to the public.

In a closed-door meeting Wednesday, Cole County Judge John Beetem decided to open the hearing next month to determine if the suspect in Olten's death can stand trial as an adult.

By opening the November hearing, the judge will permit the general public to attend.  If the suspect is tried as an adult, the suspect's name and gender will be public information.  Authorities have asked media not to release this information about the suspect.

The suspect's attorney said Wednesday the publicity from the Olten's death will make it impossible for his client to get a fair trial.  The prosecution said the Missouri Supreme Court previously ruled this type of hearing be open because of the severity of the crime.

Beetem also held a closed detention hearing and decided to continue holding the juvenile suspect in custody.

The family of the nine-year-old said their final goodbyes Wednesday at a private service.

I have a question.  I live near Detroit and about ten years ago, an 11 yr old shot and killed a man.  He was the youngest person ever charged with murder I believe, there were pics everywhere of him and his chubby little cheeks and tears running down his face, and his name was out there.  Are the laws different here?  Have they changed?  I am just curious because this story was everywhere right away, it was a big deal when he went in and when he got out.  He was not rehabilitated and was sent back to jail for violating parole, after he was released at 21.

I just wanted to offer my condolensces to the family. They must be having a real hard time taking all this in.

I'll assume Elizabeth trusted this 15 year old girl and IF she is the killer then God help us. What can we do to help our youth before it reaches this point?

I hope there is justice for Elizabeth and whoever her killer is that person should get the max penalty.

Although I am not one for grave services, I have to say that the sight of that horsedrawn carriage carrying beautiful Elizabeth is an amazing sight.  Very touching and apropos for such a sweet, innocent child.
