Police: Woman attacks ex's sleeping 8-year-old son
September 4, 2013

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Police in Maryland say a woman broke into her ex-boyfriend's home and tried to bludgeon his sleeping 8-year-old son to death.
Prince George's County police said Tuesday that 26-year-old Helen Marie Newsome broke into the home in Landover over the weekend. After hiding for more than 12 hours until the boy's father went to work Saturday morning, police say Newsome covered the boy's head with a pillow and beat him with a dumbbell weight. But the boy fought back and managed to escape to a neighbor's home.
Newsome jumped out a window, but police say she was arrested nearby.
The boy's father had recently broken up with Newsome. She is charged with first-degree attempted murder.

Jacob Soliz-Amaya was in bed at around 8 a.m. Saturday when his father's ex-girlfriend, 26-year-old Helen Marie Newsome, allegedly attacked the boy, first covering his head with a pillow, then beating him in the head with a dumbbell.

"I woke up and she was smothering me," Soliz-Amaya told NBC Washington.

Authorities say Newsome hid in the home for more than 12 hours waiting for the boy's father to go to work before she went after the child.

The 60-pound boy demonstrated some of those moves -- seen in the video above -- for NBC Washington.

Newsome then escaped by jumping out the window, cops say, but they caught up to her soon afterwards and charged her with first-degree attempted murder.

The boy -- now with eight staples in his head -- has been released from the hospital.

He told WJLA that Newsome "tried to hurt me because she knows my father loves me more than anything else."

His father ended his relationship with Newsome last week, police say.

Jacob Soliz-Amaya fights off attacker; 911 call released
September 3, 2013, Updated September 4, 2013

PALMER PARK, Md. (WJLA) -- Dispatchers have released a horrific 911 call from an eight-year-old boy just minutes after he was attacked by a woman inside his father’s Cheverly home.
Jacob Soliz-Amaya was in his bed Saturday morning when his father left for work. Once his father was gone, his father’s ex-girlfriend, 26-year-old Helen Marie Newsome, emerged from a closet where she had been hiding for more than 12 hours, police say.

Late last week, Jacob's father broke off a relationship with Newsome.

Police say Newsome allegedly tried to smother Jacob but he head-butted her – a move he says he saw on television. The alleged attack continued, and Newsome struck Jacob in the head with a dumbbell.

Despite a gaping wound to the scalp, Jacob then karate-chopped her hard enough to free himself and run outside. And while a neighbor dialed 911, Newsome leapt from a second-floor window.

“The boy is a hero,” says Capt. Jimmy Simms of the Prince George’s County Police. “He fought off someone who was attempting to take his life.”

Newsome is charged with attempted first degree murder. She's being held on $500,000 bond.

Authorities say the suspect admitted to assaulting the boy.

Jacob's parents are horrified and angry about what happened. But they couldn't be more proud.

“He fought her off. He did what he needed to survive,” says his mother Selena Soliz.

“That's as brave as a kid can get,” says his proud father, Andy Amaya.

Prince George’s County Dispatch says Jacob did everything right – staying on the phone and even taking the time to describe his attacker.
