10 ways to fight heat in the garden
Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle

It's hot. Even by Houston standards.
We're seeing abnormally severe heat that not expected to abate through early July or beyond, according to the National Weather Service.
This kind of heat is dangerous to all living things, including your lawn and garden. Check over these tips to make sure you're doing the best you can.
1) Water slowly and deeply.
Do not apply water faster than the soil can absorb it. That can lead to runoff and shallow watering, which encourages roots to grow up toward the surface where it's hotter. Encourage roots to grow downward by applying enough water to wet the soil 6 inches down, especially on lawns. Texas A&M turfgrass extension specialist Gene R. Taylor II says 1/2 inch of water (irrigation or rainfall) every four to five days should be adequate for average Houston lawns that have received irrigation or rain in the past week or so.
2) Water at the right time of day.
Water early in the day, when the sun is less intense, temperatures are lower and, in most cases, there's no wind. These conditions decrease evaporation.
3) Mulch.
A good thick mulch of leaves, pine needles, a mixture of the two and/or mulch from the nursery will keep soil cooler and moister. As mulch decays, it returns organic matter to soil. Organic matter holds water in a form plants can use without keeping roots so wet they rot. It also replenishes micro bacterial soil populations essential for healthy plants.
4) Don't fertilize.
Not when it's been dry for a long period. Fertilizer triggers top growth and flowering. You want these plants to concentrate right now on strong root systems. If you must fertilize, do so after a good strong prolonged rain.
5) Use shade.
Particularly tender plants will thank you for shade in the hottest part of the afternoon. This need be nothing more than cloth rigged up on poles on the west side of the plant.
6) Conservatively prune plants.
Remove flowers, especially fading blooms. Plants expend energy supporting what we see above ground. Don't do any severe pruning, but get rid of "uglies." Cut right on top of a new leaf node or branch so you don't leave a raw stump.
7) Don't plant in heat.
It's hard for plants to get established when stressed by heat. If you must, plan to water daily for a week to help the roots get established.
Cool Take care of your trees.
Although they may not show damage now, heat and drought are hard on them, too. Deep-root watering devices, available at nurseries, are worth the investment. Use them around the outer edge of the leaf canopy.
9) Raise the lawnmower blade.
Cutting grass too short exposes the roots to heat and drought. To encourage a healthy St. Augustine turf, mow at the proper height -- 2 1/2 to 3 inches. Mow hybrid Bermuda grass at 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches. Mow frequently, removing no more than a third of the blade height. Frequent mowing encourages thicker turf, which in turn lowers evaporative water loss. Leave the clippings on the lawn to break down and replenish nutrients.
10) Take care of yourself.
Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeine and sugar before working outside in the garden. Work in the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Take frequent breaks. Wear a wide-brimmed, loose-fitting hat and don't forget sunscreen.

CBB, so the  AC is running full blast because of the heat, and everytime it goes off I hear this littlle "pop pop" sound in my room.  Well, RM never fixed the problem in attic with the water running over the condensation pan!!!  But I dont see any bubbles in the ceiling!!!  So I wrap up all of my scrapbooks in plastic and broom in hand, start searching.  Dont see a thing!!!  Waiting for  entire ceiling to come down on my head!!  However, I do see a very large seam that has been worked on before, I think this is the place where the noise is coming from!!!  I have secured everything I can, I have alerted you, will let you know what happens!!!!

It sounds like your condensation drain line is stopped up!  You really need to get that fixed!  Usually bleach will help keep build up from accumulating in the line, and if it's not too bad; pouring some hot water with bleach in the pan may open it up.  Do you know where the condensation drains out at?  Mine drains outside on the ground (I live in the country), if it drains out on the ground sometimes dirt will cover the drain pipe and keep it from draining...so I just make sure to clear away anything blocking the drain pipe.  If yours is the same, check that first...may be the problem.  Just a suggestion!

I had a great time watching all my favorite Michael Jackson songs on Youtube last night.  Shed a few tears....broke a few moves...did a little moonwalking...brought back some really good memories too!  My boys would have laughed their butts off at me, but they weren't here so I just let it all out.  I bet no one can hear "Billie Jean" and be completely still!  If they can, check for a pulse!

RIP Michael, I'm going to do my best to only remember you for all the great music you've given us.

Any crime you may have committed, you have answered to God for now.
