Orioles are one of my favorites!  They LOVE a halved orange and a little dish of grape jelly!  They usually eat it all up in a day. Each day I need to replenish their dish! :lol:

i like cardinals and Bluebirds.The geese are driving me crazy at times.the wild turkeys are are fun(not the beverage), and beautiful to watch.hummingbirds in season are a great source of beauty.peta members in a cage are funny to watch and deer must be watched for,at dusk.

BT, hope your wish comes true.  I've never been wealthy and would be working if my job wasn't eliminated and my eyes were in better condition...there is always something more important to wish for, it seems.

Sharon, I was born and raised in NJ...Passiac County.  Realized I recognized the name of one of Dana's guests....Ed Lozzi...he attended the same HS as I did, but we didn't know one another.  My parents put 3 of 4 through private schooling on a very modest income.   Many of our school mates were better off.

I spent some time snooping around at other sites....now, I'm thinking I should get some paperwork done & maybe get some of those plants in...BT & Tylergal are starting to make me feel like a slacker..

I like plain grits with eggs, but I don’t like fish and grits.  In fact, I just don’t get it!  :?

Many, many moons ago I was kind of getting back into nature, even subscribed to the Mother Earth News magazine.  So, I decided it was time for me to have my hand at organic vegetable gardening.  Knew nothing about it except what I had read about this and that.  I planted the usual small variety of items, including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and okra.  It was a miserable failure and cutworms would wipe out my tomato plants overnight.  The only thing that seemed to do well was a row of okra that I had planted near the fence line.  

The old timer living across that fence was a cranky old feller, but he always had a very nice garden.  Everyday I would check on my okra and compare it with his.  I thought I had really done something right with that okra, because the pods on my plants had grown to be about a foot long and a good ¾” in diameter.  I was proud!

One day the old guy next door saw me admiring my gigantic okra and he leaned over the fence to say, “Son, do you know you are supposed to cut that okra every day?”

Suddenly, the pride I felt in my new breed of gigantic okra slipped away, but at least I didn’t try to feed that overgrown stuff to anyone! lol

I know the feeling. I had a short day today.. and now have to leave in an hour to go to the friggn courthouse cause my badazz son is fighting a traffic ticket he got.. and he SAYS the cop told him to fight it cause my kid cooperated? Ummm Yeah sure.  :roll:  :roll: Im suppose to believe that one.

For some reason I don't get bluebirds. Wish I did, they are so pretty.
Maybe too many finches and sparrows! The hummingbirds arrived last week and are att he feeders constantly.
We have TOO many wild turkeys. btw, did you know they can fly? I almost hit one last year..i was coming one way and a semi was coming the other way. The  turkey made a split second decision and went straight up like a helicopter..yes. they can fly quite well :shock:

Easy, that organic gardening in the south is not what it is cracked up to be, now is it?  The pontificators about organic gardening do not take into account that nothing can be grown totally organically and see what we are getting with organic from China; it is the same we are getting from all other countries who are importing organic to us.  The reasons our farmers can no longer compete with the big businesses and the overseas gardeners is that our farmers are required by law to do organically and the laws in the countries that are importing "organic foods" to us never have lived by laws and to think a small thing like a rule would interfere with them making big bucks is ludicrious.  There are measures that can be taken in the south to keep it as organic as possible, not completely.  It's just not possible.  We have insects here in the hot humid south that lead entymologists confused and bewildered, running back to their safe havens in the cool northeast and dry southwest, proclaming they did not see it but the reason they did not is because they were too fearful to look.

Try growing tomatoes in large pots with perlite and vermiculite to prevent cutworms and keep the birds from eating them before they ripen.  I can grow enough tomatoes, peppers, etc., for my family in pots and if you want to keep many insects away from them, put a marigold in the pot or ground nearby.

Bluebird MUST have a specific house; otherwise, the finches and sparrows will take over their homes.  Finches, sparrows are their worst enemy.

Tiger, our garden club was a sponsor of the Bluebird Trail.  I bought houses for each family member to have one on the trail. IT's a great project and the boy scouts are monitoring them for fire ants, actually their worst enemy.  I empathize about the geese, deer, etc.

Artcolley, if you are still here, I just saw this on the previous thread.  Are the organic seaweed products available in smaller amounts - small enough that I could take home on a plane?  Or maybe shipping would be easier.  I am planning a vacation in the Kennebunkport/Ogunquit area next month and would love to pick some up.

Some of the regulars on those two “other” sites never cease to amaze me.  They constantly rip away at Natalee calling her a multitude of inappropriate names, which are not consistent with how she lived her life.  However, they make excuses for Joran even though he spelled it all out for them in his “book.”  Now, some of them even want to talk about what a fine, misunderstood person Boeti is and make excuses for his criminal past and the fact that he could hardly stand up during a television interview.  The guy was so wasted his shadow was trying to get out of the way before he went face down on the sidewalk!

BoBO YEs, you can get smaller amounts. I am not familiar with nurseries down that way, but find a large nursery and ask them. They should have it in small bags and if not, many are very accomodating and will put up a small amount for you.

Thanks for the tips, but there is a wonderful produce market about half a mile from my house and I leave the farming up to those that know how.  I do fine with ornamental things, but never could get the hang of vegetable gardening.

 Thank you for that info!  I just returned from buying a large potted tomato plant, with a marigold planted in there too.  I wanted to ask if that was just for looks, but did not want to appear stupid.

Also Tylergal, thank you so much for the information on the Crepuscule rose.  I did find one online, but they are for zone 7-10 and I live in Zone 5.  I'm tempted to buy one anyway, knowing that I most likely won't have it back next year.  They are so beautiful!  I'm really enjoying all your gardening knowledge.

Although mills magic mix is promoted as being for roses, it is FANTASTIC on everything.  It contains fish meal, alfalfa, cottonseed meal, kelp, etc., and is shipped to you with no cost for shipping.  Nine pounds will do a small garden.  I get 100 pounds in spring.

I have a friend who grows it in a pot in zone 5.  He puts it in his garage when first frost time, cuts it back and waters it once per month and brings it out for spring.  Mine is huge, his is about one-half the size of mine.  He is in Canada.  He puts shredded leaves in the pot when he puts it to sleep.

I remember and love Perkins Cove! Walked the maginal way there every morning when I was there last, and used to watch a painter every day.  I know he passed away because I got the newspaper from there for awhile.

 My dad used to visit Maine every fall for a month, and I swear his soul is there now because it was his favorite place. There was an adorable small brick home at Perkins Cove with beautiful cottage flowers right on the water.  I can't wait to see if it is still the same - I'm hoping it is not a commercial business now.

BOBO...Also, I haven't been to that area in several years and don't really know where to direct you. I always liked Perkins Cove because it was "artsy"...that could all have changed, though.
York beach is "touristy" and you'll find lots of little shops there and an amusement park, also an "animal park" with zoo animals.
Not toooo far from Kennebunkport.
Of course, further south in Kittery, you'll find the Outlet Malls. LOTS Of outlet shops. Kind of interesting if you like to shop. Across the street from these malls is a Weathervane which always has nice fresh seafood.

I assume you are renting a car...if so, all these are easily within a short trip of where you'll be and the coastal drive (rt. 1a) is very scenic.
If in Kittery , take old rt. 103 to Kittery Point and continue on..it'll take you to york and is also quite scenic. There is a market in Kittery Point called Frisbees. Behind the store is a restaurant and its quite nice. Overlooks the Marina (when I was growing up these were the docks for the lobster boats and bait shacks! lol)
If you look out over the ocean, you will vaguely see the Isles of Shoals on a clear day and also Boone Island Light. (Read the book, Boone Island. Its a great read and a true story. )

As a matter of fact, if you can swing it, try a trip to the Isles of Shoals. They have excursion boats going out there. Lots of history out there.

Easy.. they are hearltess.  Have no brains or a soul or compassion obviously. wonder how one of them would feel if they were in Beths shoes.. or Jennifer Kesses parents shoes.. or other families who have had to deal with a loss?   :(

THe only reason I can come up with that they sympathize with these derelicts so much is because they identify with them. Sort of tells you the caliber of people that frequent those sites, doesn't it?

I have some wonderful news to share with you guys!

My niece just called me and she is pregnant..This will be her 2nd baby.  I am so excited.

She swore me to secrecy and I am about to bust!!!  I am the first person she called with her first, and now the 1st she called about the 2nd!

Looks like I will have a great niece or nephew sometime close to Christmas.  

I HAD to share with someone.  She wants to wait a little to share the news with the rest of the family...

FWIW, I have heard that if you go to the court you can have the charges lowered....just do not know how that works.  Because my FIL & BIL were in law enforcement, we still have many acquaintances in local police depts.  On occasion our sons have had friends who got tickets and my DH has spoken to whomever to see what, if anything, can be done.  I also know that the officer is not always there...from what I recall.

Just hope your son realizes he can't make a habit of it...which I'm sure you have vocalized.  Good luck.

An one man told me to find the biggest nail I could find or a wire stake and stick it in the ground right at the base of the tomato plants and this will eliminate cut worms.

I have never tried it but it sounds like good advice and he swore by  it.

Like you, ornamentals are about all I can produce well.  For veggies, I just hit on my neighbors who will share.  Only prob there is you have to take what they have as they do not take well to my placing orders with them for what to grow.  Yet.   :D

That beach eventually runs into York Beach..so it could be there. I know when I was a kid there used to be seals out there.

Oh...don't forget the Nubble Lighthouse. One of the most painted lighthouses in that area!  :lol:

Everyone should keep up to date on Tetanus shots and then you don't have to pay that emergency room fee when you get stuck.  Sometimes you need it a little earlier than the 10-year-period if you get a real metal stick.  Gardening tools are notorious for causing Tetanus because they come in contact with the soil.  Last year I stuck a piece of metal in my foot when we were disassembling gardening stuff for the fall.  I was due in 6 months for a Tetanus shot so my husband thought I should go ahead and get one.  I called the Infectious Disease doctor in our area and he made the same recommendation.  He said if it has been 7+ years, you should definitely get a booster when you are stuck.  Tetanus is caused by puncture type wounds that do not bleed well.

This person should be locked up to protect society.

I would like the answer also, Angie.  I have quit doing the big interthecal prednisones anymore.  I just don't think my body can go through that another time.  I do small doses, like Medrol Dosepaks to prevent an adrenal crisis if I need something done.  Even those little 5- or 10-day packets boost what is already in the body.  It's amazing.

It may have a positive lasting impression if your son does not win.  After all he was going 60 MPH in a 30 MPH speed zone which implies there are consequences to be paid for his person choice to defy the boundaries that are established for his well being and the well being of others.  A fine is a minor consequence when the alternative is considered ... life long consequences if he or somebody else had been  killed or injured because of his actions.  Hopefully ... if funds have to come out of his own pocket to pay the find ... it will cause him to ponder the next time he puts his foot on that gas pedal.

When eldest son was eighteen years old ... this detective wannabe figured out that the "stolen" wheels and rims from his precious  Datsun 510 which was found in the carport in the morning on blocks had not been stolen at all.  Months of drooling over images of his "dream" rims in the worn pages of a catalogue did not go unnoticed by this guy's mother.  His father and I ... with the assistance of his friend's parents ... located the "stolen" rims in their garage.  Angie ... my hubby contacted the insurance adjuster and told him the truth and ... then when #1 son arrived home from work singing as he came through the door (probably anticipated his new rims) ... we told him what we had done.  If thoughts could kill ... this guy would have been an orphan.  Although the adjuster did not contact law inforcement ... our son was made to sweat the outcome of his illegal action for days.  He is sure that this documentation on his insurance record will cause a legimate claims to be doubted ... investigated more thoroughly.

Angie ... our 37 year old son tells us today that ... until he made a personal moral decision to do what was right in life because it was right ... the memory of this nightmare was the catalyst that caused him to stop and consider prior to making wrong choices.

Janet, one of mine never forgot a hairbrush.  He got a ticket for doing an ease-by at a stop sign.  I paid the ticket because he was in high school at the time.  He had to drive because of where we lived and school location.  A week after I paid it, I was riding with him when he did another 'ease-by.'  I was brushing my hair with a boar's bristle hairbrush, and I hit him right in the face with it.  Tough love.  He has always been very careful about driving since and he reminds his own son that when he starts driving, he will take a hairbrush with him while teaching him.  Inidentally, he got a job that summer as a waiter and I took the first $60 for repayment on the ticket.  He was furious then.  It was so character-building because $60 was nothing.  My insurance went through the ceiling as a result of that ticket.  He has never forgotten it until this day.  Even when his wife mentions dreading the day when their son starts driving, he says "Hairbrush" and everyone laughs.

I had one get a ticket for "eluding an officer" and claimed he really didn't know the car with the flashing lights was for him.   :roll: So he turned off the interstate and went into a side road to see if it was or not and boy was that trooper steamed about it.

He is the same one who plowed into the back of a car occupied by two of Birmingham's finest.   :D I have forgotten the BS story on that one.

The funnest one I ever heard told to a cop was by my long ago roommate Judy as we tiredly tried to get home from one of those cruises in the Caribbean.  She told a Georgia trooper that it really didn't matter that her lights were not on because she was blind any way.  I was sleeping and only half awake to hear her saying this but even in that addled state knew we would soon come to regret that little bit of unappreciated humor.  We did.  He took us to the station and made calls about us.  Made us much later, etc.  Live and learn!  Have to let our kids do the same.

I can beat that.  I purchased $20 of gas on an empty tank and incurred $600+ of repair bills after my car total shut down on I-95 5-8 minutes later!!!

Why?  Watery gas that drowned the engine of my new car and ruined the spark plugs.  I walked in and the owner/manager, who wouldn't look me in the eyes, says, "I lease this place.  You'll have to take it up with Shell Corporate."

Wow!  Did you send an email to Shell Corporate?  I would!  That's just plain wrong and I'm inclined to believe the lease/owner of the station is responsible.

Klaas is right.  The person who sold it to you is responsible to you.  He can take it up with Shell, but he sold it to you!  I would see an attorney.  It will probably cost you a buck or two to get them to send a letter to this obstipated jerk, but he will get the message.  I might even see my district attorney or attorney general before pursueing an attorney to see what they can do.

Sue both,and let them fight it out.They do not want this because they face a class action and government scrunity,IMO

Yes, I'm sure I'll be spending hours and hours of my time trying to recoup the money, if not through Shell Corporate, then through small claims court.  I did call and they've assigned a claim number to "my case" - and after I bring my car back in on Friday because the engine warning light is still on (and get another bill), I'm going to submit everything and we'll see what happens!

My dealer said a lot of gas stations carry insurance for this, but this owner told me he doesn't although "he has his tanks monitored every day for water content".  Yeah right.  He about freaked when I offered, in front of about 5 other customers, to go to my car and get a liquid sample for him to evaluate - which they had removed from my engine.  Jurin-appearing, to be sure.

Here is my story, my daughter (19) goes to university in North Dakota, the cost of that alone made it so the only kind of car I could get her to drive down there was a 1991 Pontiac. Well the other day she is going back through immigration and her car breaks down while in line. The water pump went which could happen to any vehicle but she was in line and there were 15 cars behind her. Now the border patrol agent is yelling at her to move the car, they wont let her use her cell phone to call me because of god knows what reason, she shuts the drivers door of her car and the windows falls out and smashes on the ground. Now she is in arm pit north dakota nothing even resembling a auto repair place for miles. The kid gets a tow truck from where she is living 2 hours from the border (Minot) and they charge her $400 just to tow the car. Then two hundred for the water pump and $150 for the window. Remember this is a 1991 Pontiac.
So it goes to show you there are bandits everywhere and they will take advantage of a young girl when they can.
Probelem for them is they havent met this young girls dad yet. :-)

The PU Anna is really working hard to become the Queen “B” at the RU.  What a pathetic life that person must lead to be so jealous and envious of a woman that has lost her daughter to despicable circumstances.  Can these people be helped?  Or do they just need plenty of rope and a one way ticket to Aruba?

Basic principle of this is the Convention against Tortures from 1984 that was signed by a total of 144 countries.

When discussing the subject the Netherlands, the committee that falls under the High Commissioner of the UN paid most attention to the situation of the juvenile prisoners in the Antillean and Aruban prison. The committee condemns the locking up of juvenile prisoners among adults. The committee says that this has to end, with the biggest immediacy. As already known, there is no special juvenile prison in the Antilles or in Aruba. In some cases, juvenile delinquents are placed with the Foba (Forensic Observation and Counseling department) or the not-confined GOG (Government’s Reformatory), but that is not always possible. When placing juvenile delinquents in the Bon Futuro-prison, their age is definitely being considered and they are not placed amongst the heaviest felons. According to the committee, as part of the rehabilitation, the Antilles lacks an educational reformation program for the punished juvenile in order to improve their return in the society. Schooling and training must be part of that.

ARUBA
The committee also paid attention to the situation in Aruba, where sexual- and other violence is taking place against prisoners in the KIA. This is supposedly done by police officers and prison guards and/or they have no control over this. The committee wants the Netherlands to take measures to stop this.
The committee is very concerned about the fact that between 2005 and 2007, a big number of assaults were reported and that just a few, 2 of he 49, were taken to court. But both cases were not sentenced due to c\lack of evidence. The reportage has nothing to do with the visit of the CPT- and the UN committee that investigates torture and violation of human rights in the prisons of the Antilles and Aruba, which is planned for the end of this month. Justice-minister David Dick already indicated that he does not rule out hard negative opinion considering the situation in the Curacao and St. Maarten prisons. A few human rights organizations have pointed out the unbearable situation to the Antillean government.

THE NETHERLANDS
The UN-committee also criticized the accelerated procedures with the Immigration law that was introduced in the Netherlands in 2000. This law makes it very difficult for an asylum seeker to substantiate his/her petition. They do not get enough time to argue their case. The committee is also not happy with the long time that asylum seekers are locked up in the Netherlands.

As someone who accepts that crime occurs and we will never be rid of predators, I understand that Natalee is dead.

As someone that traveled to Aruba and almost bought a home there and went nine times and thought of it as my home away from home, I can not accept that the ALE and others conspired to cover up a crime.. and a violent one at that. I could have continued going to Aruba if they would have done the right thing and prosecuted those responsible. I would have never liked that fact that it did happen, but at least there would have been the correct conclusion. I could have lived with that.

I lurk around everyday and almost every night, especially since getting re-registered.  I can't always post or join in the conversation - work during the day and single mom-ing at night, but I keep the screen up on my laptop so I don't lose my place in the thread.  

My kids are at that age (almost 11 & 13) that when we 'watch' a movie together I have to actually watch it with them - I used to could just sit in the room and be online.  Now they check me constantly to make sure I'm watching too.  :)  

My secret is that sometimes when I'm working from home, which I do often, and they're at school I turn on PBS or Nick Jr. in the background just because I miss the 'little kid' shows they used to watch.  (Don't tell!)   :wink:

It was supposed to fool everybody so we would no longer associate him with the beating of Alex Matthews.  They used to drug Matthews so they could beat him because he was a kickboxer and otherwise would beat them up right back so by drugging him, he couldn't fight them and they put him in a wheelchair beating him so badly.

I think the UN committee would notice if just Paulus were complaining.  This is apparently 49 juveniles involved and I don't think Sloot or even Taco is ready to take on the UN just yet.  I believe this is totally independent of any of those thugs.

 Judge looks at me and says I am sorry.. I laughed.. how can I help not to? I said no problem. Lectued my kid about speeding and point on his driving record and MY insurance.... looked at us.. said case dismissed.

I have my personal doubts that the people of The Netherlands would be willing to fight Chavez for Aruba should it ever come to that.  They would appeal to the UN and do sanctions, etc. while he over ran it in a heartbeat and just basically do nothing except maybe breathe a sign of relief they were rid of the place.

They wanted to leave completely in the 1990's but through the UN we asked them to stay to stabilize the region.

I don't see them doing a Margaret Thatcher on behalf of Aruba at all.  Of course, I could be wrong about that.

I don't think at this moment based on what we know that this is even logical.
The cage, a knife and a tarp went missing that night, early morning fom the Fisherman's Huts. The fishermen did not see anyone around, the only thing we heard that they saw was a white jeep-like vehicle parked right up on the beach that evening... don't know what time or what direction... north of the huts or south of the huts..
So, in the midst of all of the activity that night, the perps break into the huts and take these items. The fish cages are very large. The car would have to have been close or a boat would have to have been right up there on the shore.

The cages were probably stacked and they took one?  Any one that has owned  boats has owned collapsible cages for crab, or what ever, it doesn't take an avid fisherman to see these things and now what they are used for.  We had a pleasurer cruiser of sorts in the NW and we had crab pots, fish cages and such.  there is not that much storage on a boat or a yacht, and everything is compact.  Living near the water for that long, they all knew what they were for and where to find them.  IMO  It could be they broke in to the huts, saw them, and developed a plan.

Vlad / Splat / Heft  is a fool. Gets his kicks threatening females on missing person's boards. Totally harmless because the fear is within himself. If he ever decided to get off his ass and leave his mommas basement his societal shortcoming would multiply. Better he stays where he is.

I stuck around at RWV for too long. I hung on thinking COMMON SENSE would prevail. I didn't fade away -- I just finally left abruptly with no fanfare. Dan was taken completely in with Renfro. I thought he was pretty  intelligent in the early days -- I thought he was using good solid journalistic techniques. I don't know how I kept from getting banned after I started calling him out ( both publicly and privately) when he started listening to Renfro and espousing her nonsense. I guess he felt he would really look bad if he silenced me.

I didn't care for RWV either and in fact, never posted there. Just read a bit to see if there was any news.
