From all accounts the police have been very tight lipped on info with this case. Also kind of interesting that the boyfriends name has not been mentioned or whether he is a POI or not.

Police did not mention where in Pueblo her car was found.

Also, police have not mentioned whether there was or was not foul play involved in her disappearance. Although at this point and the amount of time that has gone by and a vehicle located, one as to suspect unfortunately foul play.

Kelsie was last seen on the south side of the Walmart on 4080 Northern Avenue.

The reviews for this Walmart are not good.

Here is what one Google reviewer said:

Google Reviewer:

This walmart is terrible. The service is slow and unfriendly. I actually saw somebody getting beaten up in the parking lot! I know this is Pueblo but come on! This is just too ghetto. I don't fear for my safety at Target or at other grocery stores in Pueblo. Do yourself a favor and stay away.

Kelsie Schelling update: Friend claims missing woman is pregnant
2-16-13
http://www.examiner.com/article/kelsie-schelling-update-friend-claims-missing-woman-was-pregnant

Was missing woman Kelsie Jean Schelling pregnant? A friend and coworker claims that she was before she went missing, and he made other shocking claims as well. This is a breaking update not yet in the mainstream media, but it's news that needs to be brought to attention, nonetheless. An email was sent to me by the young man on Feb. 16, 2013, and he not only knows Kelsie, but knows her boyfriend as well -- the boyfriend she was known to be visiting when she was last seen in Pueblo, Colo. SNIPPed

Police have not confirmed this information, but Kelsie's friend says that the young woman was pregnant, and was having trouble with her boyfriend -- who is presumably the man she was believed to had been visiting when she vanished. The screenshot of the email is included in the above photo slideshow, but the name of the source has been omitted, as well as the name of the missing woman's boyfriend. There are also accusations of physical abuse against the boyfriend. snipped

Kelsie Schelling Remains Missing on Her Birthday

Today Kelsie Schelling would be turning 22 years old, but she is missing and has been since Feb. 4, 2013. Instead of celebrating her birthday with candles and cake surrounded by loved ones giving gifts, she is nowhere to be found—and her loved ones are spending this time searching for her and seeking answers
 ::snipping2::
The "Help Find Kelsie" Facebook page is full of warm birthday wishes, but there appears to be a standstill as far as clues in the case go. The last officials update in the case came with the discovery of her car in Pueblo, but since then officials have been mum on the details.

Public asked to help find missing woman
POSTED: 12:47 PM MST Feb 19, 2013 UPDATED: 01:15 PM MST Feb 19, 2013

PUEBLO, Colo. -
The search for Kelsie Jean Schelling continues, but her boyfriend has been arrested on suspicion of identity theft.

The arrest affidavit for Donthe Isiah Lucas, 20, has been sealed by a Pueblo judge. Lucas was arrested Friday.

Sgt. Ken Espinoza of the Pueblo Police Department's investigation unit said Monday he could not comment on Lucas' arrest because the affidavit had been sealed by the court.

Police have said that Schelling, a Denver resident who turned 22 on Monday, traveled here to visit her boyfriend. She was last seen Feb. 4 and her vehicle was found here Thursday.

Pueblo police have maintained that foul play is not suspected in Schelling's disappearance, only that they're helping Denver police locate her.

Are these three disappearances connected? (Photos)
February 26, 2013

There are reports circulating lately that are trying to connect three Colorado disappearances as some sort of compound event. Their only line of comparison is the website Model Mayhem, which is disturbing seeing as though it's a prominent site mentioned in numerous missing persons cases. On Feb. 25, 2013 KRDO News shared the stories of three currently high profile cases, and some bloggers have tried to run with the information in hopes of inflaming a potential connection, although some of the information being spread isn't 100% accurate. Nonetheless, it's important to look at every possible theory when it comes to three missing women in one specific region.

First of all there are still no signs of missing Denver woman Kelsie Schelling -- not since her car was located in Pueblo. She is among the young women being connected in this string of disappearances simply because she has a modeling/entertainment profile online. Back on Feb. 18th I shared a post here on Examiner that detailed the missing woman's case and her Explore Talent profile, which is bare and looks like it's never been used. The Examiner article pointed out the Kara Nichols disappearance as well, and it's important for this information to be pointed out. So it's good that other media sources are following behind me in this analysis.

Pueblo Police To Hold News Conference On Missing Woman

On Friday Pueblo police will hold a news conference about Kelsie Schelling, a 22-year-old missing woman from Denver. She was last seen in Pueblo.

Detectives are expected to update the investigation and Schelling's family will make some statements.

Police say Schelling went to Pueblo on Feb. 4 in her 2011 black Chevrolet Cruz. She was supposed to meet an acquaintance at Walmart on W. Northern Ave.

According to cell phone records she did make it to Pueblo. Video surveillance shows her car parked at Walmart on Feb. 5 around 12:05 p.m. It was left there overnight. On Feb. 6 an unidentified man picked the car up and drove away.

On Feb. 14, Schelling's car was found at St. Mary Corwin Hospital. It had been parked there around 5:30 a.m. on Feb. 7. That same day Schelling's cell phone records show she was in the Pueblo area until her cell phone battery died.

Family pleads for help finding woman last seen in Pueblo
Posted: Friday, March 15, 2013 3:12 pm |  Updated: 3:23 pm, Fri Mar 15, 2013.

The family of Kelsie Schelling, missing since Feb. 4, made a public plea today to help find their missing loved one.

"Kelsie is always quick to lend a helping hand and we're asking everyone to keep continuing to help. She needs all of us right now," brother Colby Schelling told the media at an afternoon press conference.

"We all love and miss Kelsie very much and we want to do whatever it takes to bring her home."

Colby Schelling said it is uncommon for his sister to go so long without talking to friends or family.

Pueblo police Detective Neal Robinson said the point of the press conference was for the family to address the public to help find Schelling, who is from Denver and was last seen in Pueblo.

Six members of the Schelling family attended the press conference but police did not allow the media to ask them questions.

Robinson declined to answer numerous questions from local and Denver media and gave few updates outside of information stated in a press release that had been issued Thursday.

"We're working this as a missing person case. That's why the family is here and is pleading with the public to help find Kelsie," Robinson said.

Robinson was unable to give further details about the case because a judge has sealed court documents that have been generated and obtained during the investigation.

Police Release Surveillance Images In Hopes Of Locating Missing Woman

The Pueblo Police Department today released new images they believe may help them in the search for a missing woman.

Kelsie Shelling, 22, has been missing from Denver since February of this year when she drove to Pueblo to meet an acquaintance.

Police surveillance from Wal-Mart on W. Northern Avenue on February 6 at 7:20 a.m. shows someone getting in Schelling's car and leaving the parking lot northbound on Pueblo Boulevard.

The person is seen in photos #1 and #2, above, walking around the southside of Wal-Mart and then getting in Schelling's 2011 Chevy Cruze.

The other two photos released by police today show cars that were parked next to Schelling's during the evening hours on Feb. 5 and Feb. 6. Police would like to speak with the occupants of those cars as witnesses in the missing person investigation.

Kelsie Schelling Missing: Family of pregnant Colo. woman, 22, pleads for help

(CBS) DENVER - A family in Colorado is issuing a public outcry for help in finding their missing daughter, Kelsie Shelling. According to CBS Denver, the 22-year-old pregnant woman disappeared in February.

PICTURES: Missing pregnant Colo. woman

Schelling was reportedly last seen on Feb. 4 in Pueblo, Colo, having traveled from Denver to see her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, to tell him she was eight weeks pregnant with his child.

In a press conference on Monday morning, April 29, family members said Schelling's bank account has been accessed and messages had been sent from her cell phone. They reportedly also said that her vehicle, a black Chevy Cruz, was seen on surveillance video in a Pueblo hospital parking lot three days after she disappeared. Schelling was not seen on the video, reports CBS Denver.

The family reportedly said Lucas refuses to speak with authorities. The family is also not satisfied with his "oginial account of the events leading up to Kelsie's disappearance."

Search for Kelsie Schelling carries on in Pueblo
Posted: May 19, 2013 5:52 PM

The search for a missing woman out of Denver continues, bringing her family back to Pueblo on Sunday.

They are heading up their own search party. Kelsie Schelling's family and hundreds of volunteers were on the south side, off of Pueblo, near the old dog park on Pueblo Boulevard. They were looking for any information that may bring Kelsie Schelling home. Volunteer Sophie Stockman, says it was her motherly instincts that sent her out to help. Stockman said, "I'm willing to do whatever I need to do to help".

The pregnant 22 year-old went missing back in February, after police say she drove from Denver to Pueblo to visit her boyfriend. Kelsie's brother Colby Schelling is frustrated with Donthe Lucas. "I haven't seen anything from his side to try and go with the search or anything like that," Colby said.

I'm working on a follow up to the discovery of a human jaw bone at Cherry Creek State Park. Investigators told me tonight it doesn't belong to a child, instead it's an adult. They're not sure how old the person is or how long the jaw bone was at the park. They're comparing it to dental records from missing people in that area. I'm working on a story now and I'll have live reports tonight on 9news at 9pm/10pm.

Pueblo police say her boyfriend asked her to meet him in Pueblo through text messages on February 4, not long after she got an ultra sound. Schelling drove down to meet him and has not been seen since.

Investigators say her boyfriend was arrested a short time later, after using her bank card. He is also considered a "person of interest" in Schelling's disappearance. However, police don't have enough evidence to make an arrest.
 ::snipping3::
Her family and friends have organized a search for her this Saturday at 10 a.m. Participants are asked to meet at the Pueblo Walmart, located at 4080 W. Northern Ave.

Pueblo police say Schelling's case is an active and on-going investigation. Officers routinely follow up on tips that come in to their department. Anyone with information about the case should call crime stoppers at 719 542 STOP

Schelling's family has also offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Colorado woman Kelsie Schelling has now been missing for seven months, and family members say the expectant mother is just days away from her due date.

Schelling, 22, left Denver and went to Pueblo on the night of Feb. 4 to meet her boyfriend.

Police said according to cellphone records, Schelling made it to Pueblo, but she hasn't been seen since.
Kelsie's family said they think Schelling was pregnant when she disappeared.

"Kelsie traveled to Pueblo on the evening of February 4th at the request of her boyfriend, after she confirmed to him, earlier that day, that she was pregnant," Kelsie's aunt Beth Saxton wrote in a letter to 7NEWS. "We have not seen nor heard from Kelsie since then."

 ::snipping3::

The car was found Feb. 14 at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital. Surveillance video showed that the vehicle was parked there about 24 hours after it was picked up at Walmart.

Schelling's family said after Kelsie disappeared, her credit card was used once. They say it was used by her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas.

Pueblo police: Foul play likely in Kelsie Schelling disappearance
Posted: 09.12.2013 at 4:19 PM

Pueblo police now say that foul play may be likely in the disappearance of Kelsie Schelling.

This, after, there has been no activity on her financial accounts, cell phone or social media accounts.

"The Pueblo Police Department believes that these facts make it a probability that Kelsie has met with foul play due to her disappearance," the department said in a statement on Thursday.

The search for Kelsie Schelling continues, only now the family is offering reward money for her direct return or location.

Before, private investigator Dan Corsentino said, the family was offering money for information that led to an arrest and conviction.

Now, the former Pueblo County sheriff said, the family just wants to find their loved one who disappeared here on Feb. 5.

The family is offering $50,000.

Kelsie's mom's statement (in the middle above) is very telling imo.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

"We know that Kelsie made it to Pueblo and did meet up with Donthe.  No one has seen or heard from her since.

We are not satisfied with Donthe's original account of the events leading up to Kelsie's disappearance.  We are informed that he has since refused to speak with the Pueblo Police Department."

Kelsie Jean Schelling: Billboards, search party focus on missing, pregnant Denver woman
By Michael Roberts Wed., May 15 2013 at 8:50 AM

 ::snipping3::

According to Laura Saxton, Schelling's mother, her daughter got confirmation of her pregnancy on February 4. As we've reported, doctor's records confirm that she was eight weeks pregnant, with the presumed father being her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, whose Facebook page pictures him playing basketball for Northeastern Junior College.

Donthe Lucas.

"Cell phone records show that Kelsie sent picture messages of her ultrasound pictures taken that day to family members and also to Donthe and his mother," Saxton said at an April press conference; her complete remarks are below. "Cell phone records also show that Donthe asked Kelsie to come to Pueblo when she got off of work that night because he needed to speak with her in person.

"We know that Kelsie made it to Pueblo and did meet up with Donthe," Saxton continued. "No one has seen or heard from her since."

Does Saxton believe Lucas played a role in Schelling's disappearance? "We are not satisfied with Donthe's original account of the events leading up to Kelsie's disappearance," she said, adding, "We are informed that he has since refused to speak with the Pueblo Police Department."

Donthe refused invitations to speak with CBS4 but his mother did so and said her son was arrested for identity theft for using Schelling’s credit card but claims the charges have been dropped. She also said their home and their car were searched by police.

Police so far won’t comment on Donthe’s involvement in the case. Documents regarding Donthe have been sealed by the courts.

Police said they are treating the case as a missing person case but they continue to interview people as part of their investigation.

Exactly.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

I keep thinking who else may have been thinking that way too...and/or have knowledge of what happened...where she is...and aren't talking.  They are just as guilty imo.  How would they feel if they were in Kelsie's parent's shoes?

Laura Saxton It is repulsive that Donthe won't be a decent human being and do the right thing by talking to police. If he would talk, we could have Kelsie back by now. How sad is it that he doesn't even care about the woman who was carrying his child, or the child itself. All he had to do is walk away. Kelsie had an army of people who would love and support her and the baby WITHOUT him!!! We would like nothing better than to never have to utter his name again.!

I want to take a moment to add my personal thanks to everyone who participated in the search for Kelsie yesterday. I am so grateful for all the familiar faces I saw in the crowd. It is amazing that you all gave of your time to make the long trip to Pueblo to support us in our efforts to get answers and justice in Kelsie's disappearance. And to the citizens of Pueblo who have adopted Kelsie as one of your own, thank you. Some of you have been with us since the first search and you have become like family to us. Some of you have just joined our efforts and we thank you for finding this important enough to take part in. Thank you for helping to spread awareness throughout your community. With your help, everyone in Pueblo will be aware of Kelsie's disappearance and eventually, someone is going to care enough about this to give information that is going to lead us to her and to justice being served.

Thank you to the local media for giving us great coverage of the search. We appreciate it so much. We pray that you will continue to give us your support, which is so important.

Finally, I want to thank Mason and Toni from Dateline NBC. Toni was amazing to work with on a difficult day. She was with us all day long learning about this long journey we have been on for 7 months now, all the while, respecting our feelings. We pray that Dateline will see how important their involvement could be in helping us find Kelsie, and the very best part of that would be that everyone in Taylor, MI would be able to watch and learn of what has happened in Pueblo, CO.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Just because his mother ran from this doesn't mean she should be living in comfort. When this all comes together, it won't matter where she lives. This isn't out of sight, out of mind. Help Find Kelsie Ginny thank you for the suggestions but those options with the cell phones have been covered by the FBI. As far as where kelsies car was and who had it, donthe had possession of her debit card and her car on the morning of February 5. Video surveillance from the ATM where he took money from her account and also from walmart showing him parking her car prove that he had lone possession of these items. Kelsie does not appear in any surveillance even though he claims she was with him. Thus our focus is on pueblo and donthe Lucas who has been named as a person of interest in her disappearance.

Laura Saxton It is also important to note that her boyfriend is shown on video surveillance parking the car at Walmart on February 5 with no sign of Kelsie anywhere in that video, even though he has said she was with him at the time. The car sat in the Walmart parking lot until February 6 when an unknown male got in the car and drove away. There is no surveillance of Kelsie being at Walmart at all on those days. Her car had been wiped clean of fingerprints when it was retrieved by police from St Mary Corwin Hospital.

My opinion only:

You can almost imagine what happened.  He told her he wasn't ready to be a father.  She told him too bad, he was going to be a father.  They fought, she was killed and he started trying to figure out what to do.  Called a friend or family member.  Said it was an accident but that nobody would ever believe him.  He needs help to cover it up so that he can go on with his life.

Yep, I can see it all in my mind.

PUEBLO, Colo. -
The boyfriend of a missing Denver woman last seen in Pueblo insists he's not Kelsie Schelling's boyfriend. He says he never even dated her.

Schelling's family says he is, and that she was pregnant with his child when she went missing. Schelling's family says their 22-year-old daughter drove to Pueblo the night she disappeared to meet up with her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas. The family says the trip came hours after Schelling met with a doctor about her pregnancy. Her family says she didn't run away.

 ::snipping3::

KRDO-TV called Donthe Lucas, the man Schelling's family says she had come to meet in Pueblo. Lucas said he wanted to speak to the media, but he said his lawyer had advised him not to. When KRDO-TV asked to speak to his lawyer, Lucas said, "I'd rather just have my name stay out of the media altogether."

When KRDO-TV asked again what Lucas' relations were with Schelling, he said, "I'm not gonna answer your questions so at this time.  I'm gonna hang up again." Lucas proceeded to hang up the phone.

Lucas says he met Schelling his first year of college, in the fall of 2011. He says they were friends, but they never dated. Lucas would not answer whether he was the father of Schelling's child.

There are also accusations of physical abuse against the boyfriend. snipped

Read the email from the friend and co worker of Kelsie at the link.

I would have brought it over, but it does have the "f" bomb in it.

Kelsie's family confirmed later that Kelsie was pregnant when she disappeared.

Is the rest of it true too?

Yesterday via mobile.

Today is not an anniversary date or a day with any particular significance. It is just another day in the life of having a missing child. Some days are just harder to get through than others. Today is one of those days for me. I miss my daughter Kelsie Schelling. I want her home. I'm tired of all the lies by Donthe Lucas. I'm tired of having to fight to keep any interest in her case and keeping her name and face at the forefront of people's minds. Im saddened by those who dont care or don't want to get involved because they are scared. I'm sickened by those who do have information but don't come forward because they don't want to be a snitch. I just miss my daughter and grandchild and want them returned to us. I pray that God will have mercy on us soon and answer this prayer.

Family of missing pregnant woman holds rally in Pueblo
11:54 AM, Nov 16, 2013

PUEBLO - The family of a missing Denver woman is fighting to keep her story alive.

Kelsie Schelling's family held a rally Saturday in Pueblo, where the 21-year-old pregnant woman disappeared nine months ago.

Colby Schelling, Keslie's brother, says her family won't give up until they find justice.
 ::snipping3::
Her family is frustrated with what they call a lack of progress in the investigation.

They say her boyfriend and his family have changed their stories, and are refusing to cooperate with Pueblo Police.

"The bottom line is we're not going to give up. We're going to keep fighting to bring Kelsey and her baby home. Whoever knows what happened to her, just know that we're not going to stop until we find her," Colby Schelling said.

Kelsie's family put up billboards around Pueblo.

The family is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads them to Kelsie.

The past couple months have been especially difficult, as Kelsie's due date would have been in September.

Pueblo detectives continue looking for more leads.

If you know anything that can help, call Pueblo Police at 1-855-4-KELSIE.

The boyfriend  and his family changing their stories and not cooperating?   That sounds mighty suspicious.  JMHO

I have been asked by caring supporters how I am holding up during this very difficult time. During this week of Thanksgiving, after thinking a lot about my emotions and what a day looks like as the mother of a missing child, I would like to share that with you all as best I can, because it is something that only someone going through the same thing could truly understand. Please join my family this Thanksgiving and say a prayer for Kelsie, her baby and all families of missing loved ones because the holidays only intensify the pain and anguish of not having your loved one with you. I would especially like to dedicate this to the parents, siblings and spouses of missing loved ones who I had the honor of meeting through Project Jason in September. I know they are all experiencing the same type of emotions as I am approaching the holiday season.

Anyone with information regarding Kelsie's disappearance, please call 1-855-4-KELSIE or visit HelpFindKelsie.com. $50,000 reward for the direct return or location of Kelsie.

    Thank you,
    Laura Saxton

No sign of missing woman almost 1 year later

DENVER - It has almost been a year since a pregnant woman from Denver disappeared while visiting her boyfriend in Pueblo.

Kelsie Schelling was last seen on Feb. 4, 2013. Since then, no one has seen or heard from the 22-year-old.

According to police, Schelling's boyfriend, Dohnte Lucas, asked her to drive down from Denver to Pueblo so the two could discuss the pregnancy.

Police say Lucas was the last person to talk to or see Schelling. Schelling's vehicle was discovered 10 days after her disappearance in a parking lot at a hospital in Pueblo. No one from the hospital had records showing Schelling visited them.

"I know my mind races all the time," Schelling's mother Laura Saxton said. "In my heart I know she's not with us anymore. But I need to have her back in order to find closure."

Lucas has not been cooperative with police. He was arrested shortly after Schelling's disappearance on an identity theft charge. According to police, Lucas used one of Schelling's debit cards without her permission after she disappeared. Lucas was later released.

"The missing part of it is what's so hard. There's no healing," Saxton said.

Since then, there has been no clues and no leads.

 ::snipping3::

Police continue to monitor Lucas. A candle light vigil is scheduled this upcoming Saturday in honor of Schelling.

There is a $50,000 reward for anyone who can point police in Schelling's direction.

From the video at the link:

Kelsie attended Junior College in Sterling, that's where she met Donthe Lucas.

Investigators told Kelsie's mother that Kelsie's car was completely cleaned out.  The family hasn't seen her car, LE still has it.

IN RESPONSE

KELSIE SCHELLING INVESTIGATION

The Pueblo Police Department understands the frustration being felt by friends and family of Kelsie Schelling. This investigation is equally frustrating for the men and women of the Pueblo Police Department. Some statements have been made by individuals who have limited knowledge of this investigation, nevertheless, we feel the need to provide you with factual information.

1). This case is not a cold case. It has been worked continually since Feb. 12, 2013, and continues to be worked as new leads are developed. A lead Investigator has been assigned this case from the outset, and he is assisted by other Detectives from the Crimes Against Persons Section depending on the information.

2). The police are bound by the laws of the land. The United States and Colorado Constitutions are living documents that set the parameters on what the police may or may not do. As an example:

    a. The police cannot arrest individuals without reaching a legal standard called “Probable Cause”.

    b. The police may interview individuals, but they cannot force someone to talk.

    c. The police do not use unlawful methods to solve a case.

3). The Pueblo Police Department is involved in this matter as a result of Ms. Schelling’s car being found within the City of Pueblo, after she had reportedly visited her boyfriend.

4). This investigation was almost one (1) week old when the Denver Police Department provided us with the case material.

5). Our investigator has been in consistent contact with the family, particularly Ms. Schelling’s mother, throughout this investigation.

6). Ms. Schelling’s boyfriend has been, and continues to be a “person of interest”.

7). The Pueblo Police Department has worked in collaboration with other police agencies and private sector companies with the expressed purpose of locating Ms. Schelling.

8 ). The investigators assigned to this case are dedicated professionals who, besides the members of her family and friends, may be the only other advocates for Ms. Schelling.

9). We understand that a family is grieving and that the family will never forget their loved one. We will never forget her as well. We will continue to look at every lead, no matter how inconsequential, until this case is solved.

10). If anyone has any information on the disappearance of Kelsie Schelling, please call the Pueblo Police Department at 719-553-2502, or Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-534-STOP (7867).

In the last year, few new clues have surfaced regarding the disappearance of Kelsie Schelling. As of December 31, 2012, the National Crime Information Center contained 87,217 active missing person records. I was surprised to read that number. Do you know someone who is missing?

We’ll be issuing a response today. Thank you again for taking the time to learn about Kelsie’s case.

Denver woman disappears after sending ultrasound to boyfriend

Kelsie Schelling met Donthe Isiah Lucas at Northeastern Junior College in 2010. She was taking general courses in preparation for majoring in psychology. Donthe was a standout basketball player from Central High School in Pueblo. He was a forward for the Plainsmen.

Lucas talked about his aspirations of going to the NBA. After two years at Northeastern, Schelling went to Vanguard University, a Christian school in Costa Mesa, Calif., and Lucas went to Emporia State University in Kansas, hoping to play ball for the Division 1 school.

Schelling moved into an apartment in Denver at the end of the first semester and got a job at Floor & Decor, a Highlands Ranch store.

She and Donthe continued to correspond, and during the Christmas break Donthe drove from Kansas to Denver and stayed with Kelsie, her mother, Laura Saxton of Yuma, says.

Not long afterward, she took a home pregnancy test and learned she was pregnant. Kelsie told her mother that Donthe wasn’t happy about the pregnancy.

“He was upset. She said they were so young. She made excuses for him,” Saxton said her daughter told her. “She wasn’t sure he would be involved in their lives.”

But sometimes he gave mixed signals. Donthe would tell Kelsie at times that he would take the baby away from her after the child was born.

“She was bound and determined to have the baby. She was really excited to be a mom,” Saxton said.

By early February, however, Donthe seemed to be coming around, indicating that he did wish to be involved in his child’s life.

He had grown up without a father and it was important to him that his child would have a father. That was also very important to Kelsie, she told her mother, but she was prepared to raise the child as a single mother if need be.

On Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, Donthe sent a series of e-mails to Kelsie trying to persuade her to drive the two hours to his home in Pueblo after she worked at Floor & Decor. It was apparent by the texting exchange that she had an appointment with a doctor the next morning and Donthe knew about it.

He wrote back that he had something he wished to give her. When she asked what it was, he wrote, “You need to come and see for yourself.”

But she was too tired after working a full day to drive to Pueblo that night.

The next morning she went to a doctor’s appointment. Her doctor confirmed she was pregnant and told Kelsie she was eight weeks along. Kelsie texted an image of the ultrasound of the embryo in her belly to her mother, Donthe’s mother and Donthe.

Again on that Monday, Lucas texted Kelsie, asking her to drive to Pueblo to see him that night after work. Kelsie agreed. She left around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 4 in her black 2011 Chevrolet Cruze.

They were to meet at an intersection near the home of Donthe’s grandmother in Pueblo. When she arrived she sent a text telling Donthe she was waiting for him.

Kelsie kept waiting and waiting. She texted him, writing, “Where are you at?” Finally she threatened to leave without seeing him because she was getting too tired.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” he wrote over and over.

The next day, Saxton tried to call her daughter. She couldn’t reach Kelsie. She kept trying. Kelsie’s friends called Saxton that Saturday and said they couldn’t find Kelsie.

 ::snipping3::

Denver police starting investigating. They began tracking her movements using her cellular phone. Signals from her cellular phone indicated she had gone to Pueblo. Kelsie’s cellular phone battery ran out on Feb. 7.

 ::snipping3::

Pueblo police sought the public’s help in locating the young woman. They asked managers of stores and restaurants to search their security video for images of the young woman or her car.

A Walmart video-camera recorded Kelsie’s car as it was driven into the parking lot at 12:05 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013.

In an interview with The Denver Post, Saxton revealed many details that have never been discussed publicly.

For example, she explained that the video showed Lucas climbing out of her daughter’s car and walking to the back of the car and climbing into his mother’s vehicle.

The car remained overnight. At 7:20 a.m. the next morning a man wearing sunglasses, gloves and a hoodie came out from behind the Walmart, walked directly to Kelsie’s car, opened the door, climbed in and immediately drove away.

Police determined that the last messages Kelsie had sent from her cellular phone were to her boyfriend Monday night. They also discovered that Lucas had used Kelsie’s debit card to take money from her account at Canon National Bank in Pueblo that same night.

On Feb. 14, Kelsie’s Chevy Cruze was found in the parking lot of St. Mary-Corwin Hospital.

Police scanned hospital videotape from the parking lot. A videotape dated Feb. 7, at 5:30 a.m., shows someone driving the black Cruze into the parking lot.

“The lights of the vehicle come on as if the vehicle was locked and an unidentified person leaves the scene walking,” a police report says.

Pueblo police released snapshots from the video at Walmart to TV stations and newspapers.

The photographs were grainy. It was difficult to tell who it was.

Pueblo detectives interviewed Lucas on Feb. 15, 2013. He denied knowing what had happened to his girlfriend.

He did acknowledge that he met Kelsie late Monday night and that he got into the driver’s seat and drove his girlfriend to different locations, Saxton said.

He told police Kelsie was feeling sick so he drove her to Parkview Medical Center, 400 W. 16th Street Pueblo. Lucas said he stayed in the car while Kelsie went inside for help.

Lucas allegedly told police he and Kelsie drove together to the Canon National Bank. He also said Kelsie was in the car and allowed him to use her debit card so he could withdraw money from her account, Saxton said.

Afterwards they drove to the Walmart and got into an argument, Lucas told police. He told police she told him she needed to go back to Denver so she could go to work the next day, Saxton said.

However, when police reviewed surveillance videotape from Parkview hospital they didn’t find an image of Kelsie entering the hospital. There was no record of her receiving medical treatment that night either, she said.

They also reviewed surveillance footage of Canon National Bank and did see Lucas drive up to the bank and withdraw money from a cash machine, Saxton said. But the videotape does not show Kelsie in the car at the time, she said.

“There’s no record of her being in those locations,” she said.

The videotape of Walmart showed Lucas getting out of Kelsie’s car and walking to his mother’s car, but there is no sign of anyone else in the car at the time and the car remained in the parking lot until the next day when someone walked up, got into the car and drove away.

Pueblo police arrested Lucas on Feb. 15, 2013 but he was not charged with murder.

Lucas was held on three counts of identity theft and theft of less than $500, according to Pueblo County District Court records.

He was released on a $25,000 surety bond.

 ::snipping3::

The Pueblo District Attorney’s Office asked a judge to dismiss the identity theft charges against Lucas two weeks later on March 25, 2013.

 ::snipping3::

On April 29, Kelsie’s family, seemingly in response to the police public statements, released their own statement, which contradicted police. It said in part:

“We know that Kelsie made it to Pueblo and did meet up with Donthe. No one has seen or heard from her since.

“We are not satisfied with Donthe’s original account of the events leading up to Kelsie’s disappearance. We are informed that he has since refused to speak with the Pueblo Police Department.

“It has been nearly three months since Kelsie went missing. She has not had contact with any of her family or friends. She did not run off — she had nothing to run from, nor does she have any resources with which to live.

“She left her apartment on the morning of Feb. 4 with every intention of returning there that evening, and we know that because all of her possessions were left in her apartment.

“Her bank account has been accessed once since she went missing, and law enforcement has informed us that Donthe Lucas accessed her bank account on that occasion. We hope and pray that Kelsie is still alive and unharmed.

“We all love and miss Kelsie so much and are more deeply saddened to know that whatever happened to her that night also involved her unborn child, my first grandchild, as well. We are doing everything in our power to find our missing loved one and would expect anyone involved to do the same.

Months later, in September 2013, Pueblo police released information confirming the fears of Kelsie’s family.

“The Pueblo Police Department believes that these facts make it a probability that Kelsie has met with foul play due to her disappearance,” a police news release in September said.

 ::snipping3::

On Feb. 3, the Pueblo Police Department released another statement on Kelsie’s missing endangered case.

“Schelling is still missing, and her family needs closure. We believe there is someone out there who has intimate knowledge of the incident, but may feel reluctant to come forth with the information. Please know that your information may be that one missing piece we are needing to bring this case to a conclusion,” the news release says.

Lucas is still considered a person of interest in Kelsie’s disappearance, Pueblo police indicated in a recent news release.

Attempts to reach Lucas by phone on Saturday were unsuccessful.

Saxton said police told her the case is stalled because they cannot find the body of her daughter.

“If we had Kelsie there would be an arrest,” she said. “I don’t know if there is just a blame game going on with police and prosecutors. Somebody has got to wake up and do something about this.” [1]

Schelling/Saxton Family's Response to Yesterday's Denver Post Article

We would like to thank everyone who has read The Denver Post article concerning the disappearance of our daughter and sister, Kelsie Schelling, who has been missing since Feb. 4, 2013. Kirk Mitchell did a wonderful job of reporting and our family thanks him for his efforts in putting the activities and circumstances surrounding Kelsie’s case in perspective.

We are not experts in the field of crime. We are simply a family who needs their daughter and sister to be returned home to those who love her. Justice also has to be done and the person or persons who committed this crime must be actively sought.

We wanted to clarify that through reading text messages, Donthe Lucas threatened Kelsie when he was stating that he would take the child away from Kelsie. In our opinion, he knew this would terrorize Kelsie. He went from wanting no involvement with the baby to stating he would take the child away.

Donthe Lucas urged Kelsie to come to Pueblo, CO because he had something to give to her and that meeting had to take place in person. Kelsie was never seen or heard from again. She did not take many of her personal belongings that one would take if the person was going on an extended trip. Even though she knew she was pregnant, she had nothing with her for prenatal care.

Kelsie’s last phone conversation occurred on Feb. 4, 2013. Text messages were received on and sent from Kelsie’s phone for two days after she disappeared, but they were not sent by her. Her phone’s battery died shortly after and no more were sent. Someone, not Kelsie, was using her phone.

Kelsie did not access her bank account. Donthe Lucas did, alone.

After Feb. 4, 2013, Kelsie is not seen on surveillance. She was not the driver or a passenger in her Chevy Cruze. The only identified person using her car after that date is Donthe Lucas.

Donthe’s mother, Sara Lucas, picked Donthe up after he left Kelsie’s car at Walmart.

The person in the photo below is the person that picked Kelsie’s car up from Walmart on Feb. 6, 2013 at 7:20 a.m. The identity of this person has yet to be confirmed. The family asks that if you have any information on the identity of the individual below, that you call 1-855-4-KELSIE or submit a tip on HelpFindKelsie.com.

It is our opinion that Kelsie’s case should have been declared foul play within the first two weeks of her disappearance, after talking to those involved and after her car was found abandoned on Feb. 14, 2013.

Thank you so much for your support. We hope that Mr. Mitchell will do a follow up story detailing the investigative actions that have been taken. We also hope this will be helpful to other families of missing persons.

Its not easy being the family of a missing loved one. It is especially hard when you are the mother of a missing loved one. No matter their age, they are still the baby you carried in your belly for 9 months. You still wish you could hold them and love them just like you did when they were a child. My baby was going to have a baby, so that only intensifies the grief, pain and anger. There is no rule book about the best way to handle this. We learn as we go. Fighting and breaking down. It is a vicious cycle. Our lives are not, nor will they ever be the same. I recently released more information to Denver Post reporter, Kirk Mitchell, than I had in the past. We need the help of the public and PPD is not asking for your help, so I am asking now. Please if you know anyone in a position of authority who can help us with Kelsie's investigation, reach out to them. We have had promises of help and then those people just disappear. We need those who will stick with it. We need someone who will let LE know that what they are doing is not enough. It's not acceptable. The treatment of our family is not acceptable. The Pueblo DA needs to know he is not doing enough. He needs to step outside his protective "box" and do something to further this investigation. The PD and DA need to work together to bring resolution to this nightmare. To those of you who do help us, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support. We appreciate you so much. To everyone who took the time to read this, please let your voices be heard by demanding more from the public servants who work for you, for us and for Kelsie and Kadrie. Thank you. ~ Laura Saxton

May Laura Saxton finally get the help and attention she and her missing daughter deserve.  Not a fan of mainstream media but it can be used to pressure authorities to do their job and hold them accountable when they don't

One issue that has always bothered me is the complacency with allowing investigations to take years.  I do not believe that is necessary and in many cases may actually hinder an investigation.

Help Find Kelsie
44 mins ·

To Donthe Lucas, his family and friends:

Tuesday will mark 1 year and 9 months that Kelsie and the baby have been gone. 21 months since I have been able to talk to my one and only daughter, the light of my life and a big part of my reason for living. My life stopped on February 4, 2013. I am beaten, battered and bruised physically and emotionally. My heart has been forever broken and scarred.

Everyday I pray it is the day that I get to bring Kelsie home. I can't believe that it will never happen. How could I survive that? My wish is to be able to understand what I cannot comprehend. I need you to provide the answers that will allow me to bring Kelsie home where she belongs.

I imagine even you miss Kelsie from time to time. She did so much for you. She always wanted the best for you. I'm sure you miss having someone love you that much. Don't you think she deserves to come home to her family. After all she did for you, doesn't she deserve at least that?

Imagine how you would feel if it was your mother, sister, brother or nephews who went missing. Imagine the pain, anxiety, despair, fear and helplessness you would feel. Imagine knowing someone holds the answers to bringing them home, but they won't tell you.

So I come to you now, appealing to anything that may be good inside of you to give me the answers I need to bring my daughter home to her family where she belongs. If she is no longer alive, we need to be able to lay her to rest properly. I need a place where I can go to be with her, to talk to her, to bring her beautiful flowers, to cry over her and the baby.

My life will never be the same as it once was. It has been permanently torn apart. If you can do anything to allow us to bring Kelsie home, maybe I will have a chance at some sort of peace. Maybe I can move forward in life rather than being stuck in this place of suffering.

There are many ways you can anonymously let us know where Kelsie is. Please look deep inside yourself to find the knowledge that giving Kelsie back to our family is the right thing to do. Maybe you will feel better yourself knowing that you did the right thing after all these months of pain and suffering.

I just need to bring her home. Please help me do that.

Hundreds of people participated in the justice walk for Kelsie Schelling and her unborn child.

This comes after Laura Saxton and Doug Schelling, Kelsie’s parents, filed a federal lawsuit Thursday against Pueblo police, the City of Pueblo and Donthe Lucas along with his family members Sara, Vivian and Dawn Shay.

The suit shows Kelsie’s parents accusing Pueblo police of mishandling their daughter’s case by tampering or destroying evidence along with disregarding tips.

“The biggest and probably most important evidence is the video surveillance that has not been professionally enhanced and that would be huge into finding out who moved Kelsie's car,” Saxton said.

Parents of missing Denver woman, Kelsie Schelling sue boyfriend, Pueblo police in 'wrongful death'
Posted: 11:14 PM, Feb 6, 2015
Updated: 12:28 AM, Feb 7, 2015

DENVER - Two years after the disappearance of a 22-year-old pregnant Denver woman, her parents have filed a federal lawsuit against her boyfriend for "wrongful death" and Pueblo police investigators for "deliberately obstructing" the investigation of the "killing."
 ::snipping3::
Donthe Lucas, a 6-foot-8 former basketball star at Pueblo's Central High School and Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, has never been arrested or charged in connection with her disappearance or death.

However, the woman's parents, Doug Schelling and Laura Saxton, filed the lawsuit against Donthe Lucas, his mother, Sara, his grandmother, Vivian, and another family member, Dawn Shay Lucas.

"Kelsie Schelling was feloniously killed when Donthe Lucas committed first-degree murder, second-degree murder, or manslaughter against Kelsie and Sara Lucas and Lucas acted as co-conspirators or accomplices during or after the killing," the lawsuit claims.

The lawsuit also names as defendants Pueblo's Deputy Police Chief Andrew McLachlan, Detective Neal Robinson and Sgt. Ken Espinoza along with the City Of Pueblo.

The lawsuit accuses police detectives of "deliberately" interfering with the Schelling family's "right to file a wrongful death lawsuit in Colorado District Court … by refusing to open and investigate a criminal case arising from the death and disappearance of Kelsie Schelling, by tampering with or destroying evidence material to any wrongful death claim, by deliberately disregarding compelling leads and evidence pointing to the homicide of Kelsie Schelling by Donthe Lucas."

News5 Investigates: Kelsie Schelling's family files amended lawsuit against the City of Pueblo and police department

 ::snipping3::
The amended lawsuit adds a fourth claim of relief for civil conspiracy, alleging the police department and Lucas' family worked together to prevent the Schelling family from accessing evidence and other information pertaining to their daughters case.

The family says the police department interfered with their ability to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Lucas family before the statute of limitations expired.

You can read the amended lawsuit here.

The lawsuit also names Donthe Lucas and three relatives.

The Pueblo Police Department and city attorney's office couldn't confirm whether they received a copy of the amended complaint.

Attorney Gordon Vaughan, who represents the City of Pueblo, confirmed to News5 Monday afternoon that they have received a copy of the complaint.

Vaughan told News5 he understands the family's pain, but says the idea that the Pueblo Police Department didn't aggressively pursue the case is absurd.

Vaughan says thousands of hours have been spent looking into this matter, but says because this is an active investigation, he couldn't comment further at this point in time.

Schelling was eight weeks pregnant when she came to Pueblo in 2013 to meet with her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas. KRDO NewsChannel 13 reported last week that Lucas was named a person of interest in a federal court document. But Deputy Police Chief Andrew McLachlan said last week that Lucas was not a person of interest and that he didn't know why his lawyer wrote that when responding to a lawsuit filed by Schelling's parents. McLachlan is one of the defendants in the case.

When KRDO NewsChannel 13 asked Velez why McLachlan said that, he replied that he didn't know. Velez said Lucas is a person of interest. KRDO NewsChannel 13 asked Velez about the frustration that inconsistency created for Schelling's family.

"I can certainly see their point of view. I can tell them that in this police department, the buck stops with me," Velez said. "And do I think he's a person of interest? Absolutely."

Family denies role in Schelling disappearance
Published: October 29, 2015; Last modified: October 29, 2015 12:04PM

DENVER — Four members of a Pueblo family are denying they are responsible for the death of Kelsie Schelling, who disappeared two years ago in Pueblo.

Donthe Lucas, alleged to be the father of Schelling’s unborn child; his mother, his sister and his grandmother made the denials in filings Wednesday in U.S. District Court.

They are defendants in a lawsuit filed in February by Laura Saxton and Doug Schelling, parents of Kelsie Schelling. She was 22 when she disappeared in February 2013.

The lawsuit alleges that Donthe Lucas caused her death and that his family members “conspired with (him) or acted as an accomplice.”
  ::snipping3::
Deputy Chief Andy McLachlan, Sgt. Ken Espinoza, Detective Neal Robinson and the city of Pueblo also are defendants. The lawsuit alleges Pueblo police have obstructed the investigation of Schelling’s disappearance and lied to the parents.
 ::snipping3::
The next court hearing is set for late this year.

The police defendants and the city have asked for the lawsuit against them to be dismissed. Until a judge rules on that request, the case is on hold against them.

The Lucas family defendants are representing themselves without attorneys.

A year later, and still no answers, still no justice.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

Kelsie's murderer had help covering up, the surveillance videos of her car being moved around prove that imo.  Apparently, none of them have a conscience!  They've avoided prosecution so far, and Kelsie's family still hangs in limbo desperate to find her.  But I hope DL and all who participated in or have knowledge of this crime and haven't come clean yet, spend every day wondering when karma's going to bite.  It's coming.

As KRDO NewsChannel 13 reported, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation may take over the Kelsie Schelling disappearance case from Pueblo police.

"That's something we have asked for three years basically, to have Kelsie's case turned over to another agency," Schelling's mother, Laura Saxton, said.

This comes after "20/20" aired a report Friday about Schelling.

PUEBLO, Colo. -

Update:

Pueblo Police now say they will continue to investigate the disappearance of Kelsie Schelling in partnership with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

The police department has asked the CBI to review the case, and that the two agencies will continue the investigation jointly. PPD will remain in charge of the investigation.

The news proved to be heartache to Schelling's mother Laura Saxton.

"I can't. It's hard after all of this time," Saxton said. ""Just going through the loss of Kelsie is enough for a family to have to deal with. It's just been torture for us."

She said she was cautiously optimistic that CBI would take charge and that the move would lead to new clues about her daughter's disappearance.

Chief Luis Velez said he is looking forward to the state agency's perspective and input but remained confident in his department's ability to solve the case.

"Their investigators will take a look at the case and provide us with an objective third party view," Velez said.

Law enforcement digging up backyard connected to missing woman's ex

PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - Law enforcement are digging up a backyard at a home with a connection to a missing Pueblo woman.

Sgt. Eric Gonzales with the Pueblo Police Department says a tip led them to the home on Manor Ridge Drive in a neighborhood called Regency two weeks ago. Police quietly began doing investigative work in order to obtain a warrant to search warrant, which they executed at 8 Thursday morning. As of 12:30 p.m. Gonzales told 11 News nothing had been found yet, but law enforcement expected to be on site for many hours.

The home is the one-time home of Donthe Lucas and belonged to his grandmother. Lucas was dating 22-year-old Kelsie Schelling and expecting a child with her when Schelling vanished more than four years ago. Schelling was reportedly en route from Denver to Lucas' Pueblo home when she disappeared.

Gonzales said law enforcement are looking for any evidence that could be linked to the Schelling case and are only searching the backyard. The home is no longer owned by anyone in the Lucas family.

"Right now detectives are in the backyard digging up and excavating some areas, just looking for evidence that will help us resolve the case or give us any clues or help us move forward in the investigation," Gonzales said.

Members of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and Pueblo Parks and Recreation are assisting police detectives with the search.

Schelling's mother, Laura Saxton, told 11 News anchor Dianne Derby in a lengthy interview in 2015 that she knows her daughter is dead and believes Lucas is responsible. She filed a lawsuit against Lucas' family, several police officers and the city of Pueblo claiming police botched the investigation.

In the lawsuit, Saxton states the last text message Schelling ever sent was to Donthe Lucas at 12:32 in the morning on February 5, 2013 asking where he was and quote "complaining that she had been waiting for over an hour for him."

The lawsuit alleges Lucas withdrew $400 cash from an ATM the following morning using Schelling's card, then parked her car at the Walmart on West Northern Avenue in Pueblo. Surveillance video did capture someone driving Schelling's car out of the Walmart parking lot, but it's not clear who is behind the wheel. The Walmart is located less than a mile from the Manor Ridge Drive home law enforcement are searching Thursday.

Schelling's car was eventually found a week after her disappearance at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, the last trace of Schelling in more than four years.

She notified here mom about it and don't know much of the rest of the details... May have lead to this now...if they do end up finding anything the mother of this guy should also be charged as too she lived there in this house also with him. Sharron Fiedler-Wood Yea, it doesn't seem like the type of house a "doctor" would purchase either. So I would definitely question that part of the story.

Tim Snyder I'm not sure about the person snooping around or not. He use to rent the house right across from me (like 1 min up the road from this house) and was a freak about the yard, so that was my first thought was that he was doing yard work and found something, but I'm guessing that's not true

In the lawsuit, Saxton states the last text message Kelsie ever sent was to Donthe Lucas at 12:32 in the morning on February 5, 2013 asking where he was and quote "complaining that she had been waiting for over an hour for him."

According to the lawsuit, the next morning Donthe "withdrew $400 cash from the ATM" with Kelsie's card.

The lawsuit claims Donthe then parked Kelsie's car at the Walmart on West Northern Avenue in Pueblo. Video released by the Pueblo Police Department shows a person driving Kelsie's car out of the Walmart parking lot. It was found more than a week later parked at St. Mary Corwin hospital.

Months later, Laura Saxton's lawsuit claims a Pueblo landlord who was renting to Donthe's mother found her apartment abandoned and trashed. When he went to replace the carpet, the lawsuit claims the bottom was "soaked" with what "appeared to be blood."

11 News anchor Dianne Derby asked Pueblo Deputy Chief Mike Bennett about those claims. When asked if his department ever retrieved that carpet from the landlord Bennett replied, "That's what I meant when I said there is some misinformation going around involved in this case. I'm aware of all of those tips, our detectives are aware of all of those tips. As I said, all tips that we are aware of have been followed up thoroughly."

The lawsuit also claims Pueblo police did not search Lake Minnequa in Pueblo even after getting reports in person from a man fishing there that he had snagged his line on what appeared to be a body.

When asked if his department searched Lake Minnequa, Bennett replied, "I'm not at liberty to talk about that."

Derby then asked Bennett if his officers or the department in any way searched Lake Minnequa since February of 2013.

Bennett replied, "Yes, we have followed up on every tip we have been made aware of."

Bennett said the Schelling and Lucas families have been uncooperative.

Derby went to Donthe Lucas' home in Pueblo and tried to talk to him in person. His grandmother would not talk on camera but said cadaver dogs searched her home twice.

For a second day, investigators with the Pueblo Police Department and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation are searching a property where Kelsie Schelling's ex-boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, once lived.

The home is located in the 5100 block of Manor Ridge Road on the south side of the city.

The search, which includes digging up several areas in the backyard, began on Thursday. Police say they obtained a search warrant after receiving a new tip in Schelling's disappearance.

Schelling was last seen at the Walmart in the 4000 block of W. Northern Avenue on February 4, 2013.

 ::snipping3::

The "20/20" report featured tapes of police interviewing Lucas after Schelling's disappearance. During an initial interview with police, Lucas told detectives he went with Schelling to Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo because she wasn't feeling well. Lucas said she went in for two hours and then came out and told him she wasn't pregnant anymore.

However, the medical center had no record of Schelling ever stepping foot in the building. Additionally, surveillance video from a bank showed Lucas driving up alone in Schelling's car and withdrawing $400 in cash from her bank account.

Police brought Lucas in for a second interview. He was interviewed by detectives Neal Robinson and Gabe Maldonado. The detectives confront Lucas about the cash and no trace of Schelling at Parkview Medical Center.

Judge dismisses Schelling family lawsuit targeting Pueblo police

DENVER - A lawsuit that was filed against the City of Pueblo and three of its police officers has been tossed out.

The lawsuit was filed by the parents of Kelsie Schelling. The then 22-year-old from Denver disappeared in Pueblo in 2013.

In the lawsuit, Laura Saxton and Doug Schelling alleged that Donthe Lucas killed Schelling and that the police department mishandled the case.

Lucas and several of his relatives were also named in the suit. Lucas has denied having a relationship with Kelsie Schelling.

The family's attorney, Lonn Heymann, says they plan to refile their wrongful death suit against Donthe Lucas and the family members that were named in the original suit.  "Kelsie Schelling's parents are disappointed, but not entirely surprised. They understood that the federal civil rights law is not supportive of people challenging the police for failing to do their job. However, we believe there was a cause of action under these circumstances," Heymann said.

Police digging up backyard find evidence in case of missing pregnant Denver woman Kelsie Schelling

PUEBLO, Colo. – Day two of the search of a Pueblo home and backyard connected to the case of a pregnant Denver woman who went missing four years ago has turned up some evidence, though police won’t say what kind.

Pueblo police and investigators with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation began searching at a home in the 5100 block of Manor Ridge Drive Thursday morning in the hope of finding new clues in the disappearance of Kelsie Schelling.

The home used to be occupied by Donthe Lucas, Schelling’s boyfriend and the father of her unborn child. Lucas has long been considered a suspect in the case but he has never been convicted on any charges.

On Friday, police told KRDO that investigators digging up the home’s backyard found some pieces of evidence. Though officers wouldn’t say what kind of evidence it is, they said it is not a body.

Schelling was 21 years old and eight weeks pregnant when she vanished on Feb. 4, 2013. She had her first doctor’s visit and had seen a sonogram of her baby earlier that day.

After the trip to the doctor and a shift at work, the Denver woman drove two hours south to Pueblo to visit Lucas, and has never been seen since.

Pueblo Police: Several items of evidence found in Schelling search

Updated: Apr 14, 2017 5:08 PM CDT

Investigators collected several items of evidence from the backyard of a Pueblo home Friday in connection with the 2013 disappearance of Kelsie Schelling.

The police aren't saying exactly what they recovered, but it was small enough to fit in some paper bags. An excavator has been digging in the backyard for last two days. Teams of workers would then sift through the dirt by hand to see what came up.

"Of course we're looking for the conclusion and possibly a body, but we're saying right now is obviously we don't have a body," police said.

The search began in the backyard of a home in the 5100 block of Manor Ridge Drive Thursday after police received a new lead into the case. The grandmother of Donthe Lucas, Kelsie's then boyfriend and a person of interest in the case, used to live at the home but sold it in January.

 ::snipping3::

On Thursday there were 23 people on duty at the site, and Friday there were 10. The expectation was to only conduct a one day search, and as a result many of the investigators are taking care of other matters today.

Police say the warrant will allow investigators to continue with the search for as long as necessary. Search crews are still digging but are expected to finish tonight.

PUEBLO, Colo. - Investigators from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Pueblo Police Department are working in a field in southwest Pueblo.

The work, which includes digging with heavy machinery, is happening near Savannah Drive and La Randa Drive.

The Pueblo Police Department confirms this operation is related to the ongoing search for Kelsie Schelling.

Schelling disappeared in 2013 after driving from Denver to Pueblo to tell her boyfriend that she was pregnant.

The police department says Schelling's boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, is a person of interest in her disappearance.

Police say the site that is being searched is within a 1-mile radius of a home Lucas used to live in. They say they have a checklist of areas they want to search, and this area is on that list. The focus of the search is on a drainage area. Muddy conditions from recent snow are hampering efforts.

PUEBLO -
Investigators with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation are back in Pueblo conducting a dig on the west side of the city.

News 5 is told this is related to the 2013 disappearance of Kelsie Schelling. Her mother is at the scene.

Schelling has been missing since February 4, 2013. She had just learned she was pregnant and drove from Denver to Pueblo to meet up with her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, who was the last person who saw her. The family is offering a $50,000 reward for information in the case.

Crews are using a backhoe and shovels to excavate around a drainage ditch. The area isn't too far from a home on Manor Ridge where investigators searched two weeks ago.

Pueblo police detectives and agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation brought bloodhounds with them this time.

Authorities remained mum on what they are looking for, but police confirmed to reporter Adam Uhernik that the dogs specialize in sniffing out decomposing remains.

The search began Wednesday morning and ended shortly after noon. Police said nothing was found.

The search Wednesday, as with Monday, happened on undeveloped land behind the Regency neighborhood on the west end of Pueblo and is just 1 mile from the home of person of interest and Schelling ex Donthe Lucas.

Former home of Kelsie Schelling's boyfriend catches fire

PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - The residence that once housed the family of Kelsie Schelling's boyfriend had a small fire Friday morning.

Schelling is the 22-year-old who vanished more than four years ago. She was dating Donthe Lucas at the time and had just announced her pregnancy.

Lucas and his family were evicted from the home in October 2016 because they had, "not paid rent, ever."

The report of the fire came in just before 6:30 a.m. at the 5000 block of Manor Ridge Drive in Pueblo. Crews arrived quickly and were able to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters tell 11 News the fire was mostly external, just outside the garage. There was just minor damage.

The fire comes just two months after the home was searched by police. They dug up the backyard, searching for evidence in Schelling's case. Officers confirmed evidence was found, but would not say what that was.

Fire crews say the cause is still under investigation.

“The initial report was that the garage was on fire,” Duran said. “When the first company arrived, the residents of the home were attempting to put out the fire — on the exterior side of the garage — with fire extinguishers.”

While most of the blaze had been quelled, firefighters put out the remainder of the smoldering siding. A scorch mark about 7 feet high and several feet wide is clearly visible on the siding.

“The flames did not penetrate the siding, so the house sustained no significant damage. And no one was injured,” Duran said.

A preliminary fire investigation was conducted, with the initial indication that the fire is incendiary and, therefore, suspicious in nature.

“The investigation is still underway to determine if it was purposefully or accidentally set,” Duran said.

According to Capt. Eric Bravo of the Pueblo Police Department, law enforcement will also be investigating the incident.

“We do think it’s suspicious in nature and the location certainly sparks our interest,” Bravo said. “So we will be following up on that.”

2013 cold case involving a missing pregnant woman reopened in Pueblo

POSTED 4:19 PM, NOVEMBER 7, 2017, BY ANN LAURICELLO

PUEBLO, Colo. — The Colorado Bureau of Investigation will breathe new life into a cold case involving a pregnant woman who went missing in 2013.

Kelsie Schelling, 21, was eight weeks pregnant when she disappeared four years ago.

The investigation and search for Kelsie Schelling will reopen Wednesday and will focus on the areas near where Schelling was last known to be in southwestern Pueblo.

Schelling’s mother, Laura Saxton, said her daughter disappeared shortly after she texted a photo of her ultrasound to her ex-boyfriend, Donthe Lucas.

Schelling was last seen at the Walmart store in the 4000 block of West Northern Avenue in Pueblo on Feb. 4, 2013.

She reportedly texted a photo of her eight-week ultrasound to Lucas, then made the two-hour trip from Denver to Pueblo to meet Lucas at his request.

She arrived at the Walmart just after 11 p.m., and nearly an hour later, texted that she was “tired of waiting.”

Lucas asked her to meet on a street near his grandmother’s house; a half hour later, she wrote: “Where are you … I’ve been here for over an hour just waiting.”

She was never heard from again.

Lucas later withdrew $400 from an ATM using Schelling’s card. He was also seen driving her vehicle to the Walmart parking lot.

On Feb. 7, someone wearing a hoodie was seen driving off in the car from the Walmart parking lot. It was later found at St. Mary Corwin Hospital.

In April, authorities started excavating the backyard of a Pueblo home where Lucas once lived.

Investigators said they found evidence in the yard of the home in the 5100 block of Manor Ridge Drive. They wouldn’t say what the evidence is, but said it was not a body.

Lucas is considered a person of interest in the case, but investigators have not called him a suspect.

PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - 11 News has learned the ex-boyfriend of Kelsie Schelling, a pregnant woman who went missing in 2013, was arrested for aggravated robbery in Denver. Pueblo police say the arrest has no connection to the cold case involving Schelling's disappearance in Pueblo.

The arrest of Donthe Lucas comes less than one week after investigators announced they had new leads in Schelling's cold case. Authorities searched several areas in Pueblo for three days, the search yielded no signs of Schelling.

According to Capt. Kenny Rider with the Pueblo Police Department, there was a robbery that occurred back in September in Pueblo. Both Donthe Lucas and Duschon Lucas were arrested for the robbery. The two are brothers. Donthe was arrested on Monday in Denver in connection to the robbery case, police say the crime has no connection to the Schelling cold case.

On Tuesday night, Pueblo police arrested Duschon in an alley near West Mesa Avenue. When attempting to make contact with Duschon, he tried to sneak out a back window and down a ladder when officers arrived. Police say when they when to arrest him, his family tried to stop the arrest from happening.

Donthe Lucas remains a person of interest in the Schelling cold case.

Cash-only bond for Donthe Lucas
BY RYAN SEVERANCE THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN RYANS@CHIEFTAIN.COM  NOV 17, 2017 UPDATED NOV 21, 2017

Donthe Lucas appeared in court for the first time Friday afternoon after being arrested Monday at Denver International Airport on a warrant for aggravated robbery.

Lucas, 25, appeared via video at an advisement hearing at which Pueblo County Magistrate Kelle Thomas decided against modifying his bond and kept it where it had previously been set at a $100,000 cash-only bond.

Deputy District Attorney Michelle Chostner recommended that Lucas' bond not be altered, saying there's concerns about him being a flight risk since he was arrested at the airport while on his way to Phoenix.

Lucas spoke to the magistrate via video, telling her he wasn't trying to flee and that he was going to come back after visiting Phoenix. He also said he wasn't aware there was a warrant out for his arrest.

Lucas was extradited back to Pueblo Thursday. He had been jailed at the Downtown Detention Center in Denver since his arrest Monday.

Lucas and his brother, Duschon Lucas, 19, were arrested on warrants for aggravated robbery for an incident the two allegedly were involved in on Sept. 1 outside their home on the 1100 block of West Mesa Avenue.

Duschon Lucas was being held at the Pueblo County jail Friday night in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Donthe Lucas has been identified by law enforcement as a person of interest in the Kelsie Schelling disappearance case.

The alleged aggravated robbery Lucas was arrested for is unrelated to Schelling's case, police have said.

If you have any information on this crime, contact Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-542-STOP (7867).

Lucas will be prosecuted by the Tenth Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

PUEBLO, Colo. -- It was an emotional day in a Pueblo courtroom as the mother of Kelsie Schelling, Laura Saxon, attended the hearing for the suspect in her daughter's death.
 ::snipping3::
Saxon fought tears as she spoke to the media on the steps of the courtroom, saying she was satisfied to see Lucas in handcuffs.

Throughout the years, Saxon has been vocal about her suspicion of Lucas in connection with her daughter's death.

Lucas' next court appearance will be in March but a trial is a considerable way down the road.

Donthe Lucas will stand trial for Kelsie Schelling Murder
Lucas last saw Schelling in 2013

PUEBLO, Colo. - A judge in Pueblo ruled Thursday afternoon that there was enough evidence for Donthe Lucas to stand trial for the 2013 death of ex-girlfriend Kelsie Schelling. Lucas' arraignment has been set for August 28th.

Schelling disappeared after reportedly driving from Denver to Pueblo to see Lucas. Schelling was eight weeks pregnant, Lucas was believed to be the father. That was in 2013; Schelling has not been seen or heard from since then.

Previous Story

An FBI agent revealed Friday during testimony in Pueblo that there was a four-hour window during which the cellphones of missing Kelsie Schelling and her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas, couldn't be traced.

Special Agent Scott Eicher testified for the prosecution in the second day of Lucas' preliminary hearing.

Eicher is a cellular analyst who tracked the movement and usage of calls and texts between the couple. Cell phone towers provide tracking information, he said, but that information wasn't available during the four-hour period in early February 2013 between the last time Schelling and Lucas saw each other, and Schelling's disappearance.

"I always had concern about that because you wonder how far out of Pueblo someone could have driven Kelsie in a four-hour period," said her mother, Laura Saxton.

Eicher said Schelling and Lucas were in frequent contact from the time she left Denver to visit him on the night of Feb. 4, until the following morning.

After that, Eicher said the frequency of contact gradually decreased until Schelling's phone was apparently turned off on the morning of Feb. 7, near the Walmart where Lucas said he last saw her.

Eicher also said there is no evidence to show the couple's phones were at Parkview Medical Center, where Lucas said he took Schelling to get a checkup on the status of her eight-week pregnancy.

Just before the lunch break, the prosecution called its last witness -- Kevin Torres, a Colorado Bureau of Investigation agent who was part of the Schelling probe.

Torres testified that he believes Lucas strangled Schelling at one of his former residences but added that there's no physical evidence yet to prove it. He also said Lucas made incriminating statements to a friend about murdering Schelling.

"He said he had gotten rid of her," Torres said.  "He said he had tarped her up (wrapped her body in a tarp) and thrown it into the (Arkansas) River.  Then he told (the friend) to not tell anyone because he and his family don't mess around."

Torres said Lucas also ridiculed the role of Pueblo police in the investigation.

"He told (the friend) that the police are stupid, and that they're looking in the wrong place," Torres said of Lucas.

 ::snipping3::

Because of the length of this week's hearing, a second hearing on a robbery charge against Lucas has been rescheduled to next Thursday.

KRDO NewsChannel 13 also has learned that a relative of Lucas, either his mother or grandmother, will appear in court next month for a deposition in the case.

 ::snipping3::

Schelling disappeared in February 2013 in Pueblo. Lucas was charged with first-degree murder in December in the case, even though the body of Schelling, 21, or a murder weapon haven't been found.

Lucas and Schelling had been dating and Lucas is believed to have been the father of her unborn baby.  According to court testimony, she was eight weeks pregnant when she disappeared.

Donthe Lucas pleads not guilty in Kelsie Schelling's death; trial set for April
By: Blair Miller
Posted: 10:21 AM, Aug 29, 2018

PUEBLO, Colo. – The man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend, Kelsie Schelling, in 2013 pleaded not guilty Tuesday in a Pueblo County court to a murder charge in connection with Schelling’s death and to separate charges in connection with a robbery and assault case.

Donthe Lucas, 26, was arraigned on the first-degree murder after deliberation charge and the separate aggravated robbery with a weapon and third-degree assault charges.

He was charged last Dec. 1 in the disappearance of Schelling, which police are calling a homicide though her body has never been found.

Lucas was already in custody in Pueblo on the separate charges after he was arrested last month at Denver International Airport.

At Tuesday’s arraignment, the judge set a status conference in both cases for Jan. 7 and a motions hearing that will begin Feb. 7. The murder trial was set to begin April 2 and is scheduled to last three weeks.

PUEBLO - Next week marks six years since the disappearance of a beloved pregnant woman in Pueblo. For the month of February, the reward for any information leading to the location of Kelsie Schelling is $100,000.

SIX YEARS HAVE PASSED

Kelsie went missing while reportedly on her way from Denver to Pueblo to see boyfriend Donthe Lucas on Feb. 4, 2013. She was eight weeks pregnant at the time.

Lucas is facing murder charges in the Schelling disappearance. Lucas pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in a Pueblo court on Aug. 28, 2018. He has since filed a motion claiming Schelling's father killed her.

Two days of hearings underway in Donthe Lucas murder case
Benjamin Lloyd   1:23 pm  April 25, 2019

PUEBLO – A judge is hearing from attorneys on both sides of the Donthe Lucas murder case today as they bring forward motions that could impact the length of a potential trial and the number of witnesses called to testify.

These hearings are expected to last through Friday.

Lucas is accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend, Kelsie Schelling, 21, who is presumed dead but has not been located since she was last seen in Pueblo in February 2013 during a trip from Denver to see Lucas.

As of a recess for lunch Thursday, the courtroom is closed to the public and the media, but News5 has learned people related to the case were being interviewed for evidence related to Kelsie’s disappearance and Lucas’ alleged involvement.

Kelsie’s mom, Laura Saxton, says she just hopes the trial is not further delayed. “I just want it to happen and I really just hope that really I still hope for after all this time that some kind of plea agreement can be made and that Kelsie will be able to come home,” she said.

Attorneys for both the prosecution and defense told a judge in January they likely wouldn’t be ready for the case as it was previously scheduled in April. They told the judge there are an additional 125 potential witnesses that could possibly be called to testify, leaving them little time to sort through the knowledge or evidence they may possess.

The trial is tentatively set to begin on July 30th and last approximately one month.

PUEBLO, Colo - A two-day motions hearing in the Donthe Lucas case has been extended to June 13 and 14.

Lucas is charged with first-degree murder in relation to the February 2013 disappearance of 21-year-old Kelsie Schelling. He has pleaded not guilty to the crime.

On Friday, Pueblo District Court Judge Thomas Flesher was asked to determine if the identification of Lucas coming back to his grandmother's old house can be used at trial.

Three witnesses took the stand, including lead investigator CBI Agent Kevin Torres.

He told the judge on April 7, 2017, the new owners of the south Pueblo home where Lucas used to live called police after an African-American man came to their home asking if he could look at the backyard.

Donthe Lucas trial in Pueblo still on schedule

Last week during Donthe Lucas’ two-day motions hearing that is now set to resume in June, Kelsie Schelling’s mother, Laura Saxton, expressed concern about the possibility of the start of Lucas’ trial getting pushed back again.

In two days, Lucas’ defense counsel and prosecutors from the 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office only got through one of five motions that were set to be considered. And there are additional motions, including one filed by Lucas’ defense for a change of venue, that still need to be taken up as well.

Following the first day of the motions hearing, Saxton told an assembly of reporters outside of the court that her biggest hope with the case right now is that the trial does not get delayed again.

Lucas, suspected of first-degree murder in the February 2013 disappearance of Schelling from Pueblo, originally was supposed to face trial on April 2 before the trial date start got pushed back to July 30. The move was needed to allow more time for preparation due to the vast amount of evidence and witnesses in the case.

Despite Saxton’s concerns about the potential of having the trial delayed again, it is still scheduled to start on July 30, according to the court docket.

So it appears that attorneys are going to work through all of the pre-trial motions in the case in time for the scheduled three-week trial to begin on that date.

Another motions hearing in Lucas’ case is slated for June 13 and 14.

PUEBLO – A judge has denied a motion from attorneys for Donthe Lucas to change the location of his murder trial in the death of Kelsie Schelling in 2013.

Other motions brought up in Friday’s hearing questioned some of the prosecution’s witnesses, and brought up introducing lie detectors tests and showing Kelsie’s medical record.

“It is a really exhausting process,” said Laura Saxton, Kelsie’s mother. “I think every time we do it it is like you’re thankful for something to be going on not just being in limbo, but it is you know a very tiring process but it is nice to have some progress made.

Lucas is due back in court on July 30th ad his trial is set for January 2020.

Public kept out of court in latest Donthe Lucas hearing

PUEBLO, Colo. -- Pre-trial motions hearings for the case of Donthe Lucas, who's accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend, continued Monday. But almost nobody was allowed to be present for it.

For this hearing, everyone except for the defense, prosecutors and the judge were kept out of the courtroom when the hearing began at 1:15 pm.

Lucas's trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 2020. Lucas has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the disappearance of his pregnant girlfriend, 21-year-old Kelsie Schelling.

The judge said the information discussed during today’s hearing could potentially taint a jury. This isn't the first time the judge has kept members of the press and public out of a motions hearing pertaining to Lucas's case.

Lucas is being held at the Pueblo County Jail without bond on that first-degree murder charge. Schelling reportedly drove to Pueblo from her Denver home on Feb. 4, 2013 to meet with Lucas, the alleged father of her unborn child. Since then, Schelling has not been seen or heard from.

Monday’s motions hearing lasted a little more than an hour. For a time, even family of Kelsie Schelling were kept out of the courtroom.

“We made it into the courtroom very briefly, but we were hoping to get rulings on the remaining motions," said Saxton Monday outside of the courthouse. "We didn’t even get that today. The judge said he would be putting those out within the next couple of weeks so that’s very disheartening driving down here hoping to at least have those answers. Essentially, we are walking away with no answers yet again.”

Another motions hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. It’s unclear whether or not that will be open to the public.

Trial for 2013 murder of pregnant woman scheduled for January
KKTV Nov 19, 2019

The trial for the alleged murder Kelsie Schelling, who was pregnant at the time of her disappearance, is scheduled to begin in January after being pushed back due to new evidence findings, Gazette news partner, KKTV, reports.

The man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend, Donthe Lucas, was in court Monday before his scheduled trial. Schelling went missing in February of 2013 when she was heading to Pueblo from Denver to see Lucas about her pregnancy.

The court decided to add another hearing this week because the judge needs more time to decide what can or can't be used in the upcoming trial.

Schelling's mother, Laura Saxton, explained the family is nervous this could push the trial back again, according to KKTV. The trial has already been pushed back twice.

Initially, the trial was scheduled for April 2019, but new evidence was found in the case over the summer. Schelling's attorneys said investigators found a 6-inch hair in the back of Schelling's trunk. After DNA testing, investigators found the hair to be the same as Sara Lucas, Lucas' mother.

Donthe Lucas defense in for a shakeup as attorney withdraws from case

New developments in the murder case of Kelsie Schelling. The defense of her accused killer Donthe Lucas appears to be going through a shakeup.

Attorneys for Lucas filed a motion to withdraw one of his own attorney's from the case. The motion was sealed by the judge.

The trial date is currently set for January 14th, however, the trial date has been pushed back twice before. Tameler says Lucas' defense is working towards that date.

"The judge said be prepared for trial and that’s what we are planning on doing,” said Tameler.

Friday was supposed to be a motions hearing to discuss what is or isn’t allowed in Donthe Lucas’ trial, but this pre-trial hearing only lasted 5 minutes. A new hearing was scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday.

A judge has granted a motion to continue Donthe Lucas’ trial to May 5.

Lucas, who appeared Wednesday in a county-issued jumpsuit and in shackles, is accused of murder in the 2013 disappearance of Kelsie Schelling.

Lucas’ three attorneys, Becky Briggs, David Lipka and Karl Tameler, on Wednesday during a motions hearing, told Pueblo District Court Judge Thomas Flesher they could not effectively represent Lucas if the trial were to be held next month as scheduled.

Their reasoning is because Guillermo Garibay, the lead attorney on the defense team, withdrew from the case.

Lipka recently took on the case in his absence.

Lucas’ Pueblo murder trial delayed again
Posted Mar 30, 2020 at 2:47 PM

The trial of Donthe Lucas for first-degree murder in the 2013 disappearance of Kelsie Schelling has been postponed yet again, this time due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Lucas’ trial now is scheduled to begin on Sept. 22 after it previously had been slated to get underway May 5.

Before that, it had been scheduled for Jan. 14. And even before that, it had been on the docket for July 30 and April 2 of 2019.

The reason for previous delays had been the need for more time to prepare for trial for Lucas’ defense attorneys.

This time, the trial is being pushed back due to ongoing concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

Donthe Lucas trial for murder of Kelsie Schelling pushed back indefinitely

PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - The murder trial for Donthe Lucas will be pushed back indefinitely.

11 News confirmed with 10th Judicial District Attorney Jeff Chostner there is an issue involving the Colorado Supreme Court. Chostner did not specify what the issue was but said it will overtake the September trial date.

This comes after his trial has already been pushed back four times previously. Lucas’ most recent trial date was scheduled for this month.

Chostner told 11 News the judge “simply vacated the current date, and we will re-set once the case comes back from the Supreme Court, but no one knows when that will be.

The most recent pushback was because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as jury trials were postponed.

The same date is now set for Mark Redwine's trial too.  Kelsie's mom and Dylan's mom have supported each other and successfully worked together with lawmakers to change Colorado law when it comes to tampering with a body.  I hope and pray both cases will finally actually be tried and both family's will finally get justice in their cases.  Such a long and painful road they've traveled.  Justice for Dylan and Kelsie!

PUEBLO — Almost eight years to the day a pregnant Denver woman disappeared in 2013, opening statements began in the murder trial of her ex-boyfriend.

21-year-old Kelsie Schelling was two months pregnant when she drove from Denver to Pueblo to see her former boyfriend Donthe Lucas. February 4, 2013, was the last time Schelling was seen. Her body has never been found.

On Wednesday morning at the Dennis Maes Judicial Building in Pueblo, opening statements began. The jury selection process started on Jan. 25, picking the 12 jurors and four alternates who will serve during the trial. It could last until early March.

Prosecution Opening Statements:

Lead Prosecutor Michelle Chostner illustrated the "rocky" relationship Schelling and Lucas had, citing one of Schelling's friends, Allie, who shared a dorm room with Schelling. Allie recalled the arguments between Lucas and Schelling and said Schelling's mood was tied to whether they were good, bad or really bad.

PUEBLO — The Pueblo murder trial in the disappearance of Kelsie Schelling picks up again Monday to begin the first full week of this trial.

The last witness to take the stand Friday was Colorado Bureau of Investigation CBI Agent Kevin Torres. The case's main investigator who said previously it is suspected Donthe Lucas had strangled Schelling to death, which the CBI says would explain a lack of murder evidence, but Torres has not discuss that in court yet.

News5's Colette Bordelon is anticipating continued testimony from Torres and possibly Schelling's father and brother. She also received a witness list that shows Lucas' mother, Sara Lucas, will be called to the stand.

On Monday, a CBI Agent read through texts between Lucas and Schelling leading up to the night she drove down to Pueblo and a Denver officer recounted responding to the missing persons call Schelling's parents made.

One of the biggest moments in court Monday was a recorded call between Lucas and a Denver detective being played. News5's Colette Bordelon reported Lucas that his tone sounded very calm and matter of fact.

News5's Colette Bordelon reports the judge joined the courtroom virtually to notify everyone of the delay. The health department recommends a quarantine of 14 days and since there was a possibility of exposure due to someone who was positive being in the courtroom, the court is following this guidance.

PUEBLO — Eight years ago, 21-year-old Kelsie Schelling disappeared after driving from Denver to Pueblo to see her ex-boyfriend, Donthe Lucas. Lucas is now the defendant in her murder trial.

The trial, which is slated to last around a month, came to a halt on February 10 because someone with a positive COVID-19 test was reported to have been in the courtroom. News5's Colette Bordelon received a contact tracing call from the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment, which said the exposure happened on both February 8 and 9.

The trial was recessed for 14 days, based on recommendations from the health department.

It is set to resume on Wednesday, February 24, at 1:15 p.m.

PUEBLO — The Pueblo murder trial in the disappearance of 21-year-old Kelsie Schelling continued Friday morning with a second interview played in court that was recorded by the Pueblo Police Department with Donthe Lucas.

The audio recording of the first interview after Lucas was arrested in November 2017 played Thursday lasted more than two hours and took up most of the time in court.

A second recorded interview between the Pueblo Police Department and Donthe Lucas played for the courtroom Friday morning. This interview took place one day after the jailhouse interview heard Thursday.

Sgt. Cody Wager and Detective Randy Purvis conducted this interview with Lucas after his arrest at Denver International Airport in November 2017.

News5's Andy Koen reports the biggest takeaway from this audio recording was that Lucas denied being involved in the death or disappearance of Schelling while they told him his and Schelling's phones were hitting off a tower in Beulah the night she disappeared.

In the proseuction’s closing statements, they pointed to the amount of time Lucas would have had – between the time Schelling was discovered missing to the time she was killed: five days, they said.

They accused Lucas of sending deceptive texts to Schelling’s friends and family from the dead woman’s phone.

“He’s stalling. He’s stalling friends, he’s stalling the family, he’s stalling coworkers,” a prosecuting attorney said to the jury. “Why? Because the longer he stalls, the longer is takes to get to the police so they can do their job.”

And they pointed to a strained relationship between Schelling and Lucas, made even more fraught by the news of Schelling’s pregnancy.
