Virginia police continue to search for missing 18 year old  Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell. According to Norfolk police, they have not ruled out foul play in the disappearance. The college freshman Anjelica “AJ” Hardsell has been missing since March 2, 2015. when she disappeared while on spring break from Longwood University. However, her father, 36 year old Wesley Hadsell, was arrested by police and charged with crimes unrelated to his daughter’s disappearance. Wesley Hadsell has been charged with four charges of obstructing justice, one charge of possessing ammunition after a felony and one charge of breaking and entering. The father’s arrest  comes on the same day police and search crews spent more than 12 hours combing through a heavily-wooded area along South Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake.

Wesley Hadsell has said that he had nothing to do with his daughters disappearance; however, he believes his daughter was abducted and stated that he broke into the home of the person he suspects took AJ to look for evidence in connection with the disappearance.

“I couldn’t sit a minute away from where my daughter may have been,” Hadsell said from the Norfolk City Jail.

Hadsell admitted to breaking in and spending roughly 18 minutes inside the home. where he tore through trash cans and pealed back parts of the carpet. He said he even punched the family dog out of anger. He claimed to have discovered a clue upon searching through the resident’s furniture.

“I found my daughter’s jacket in his couch rolled up behind the cushion,” said Hadsell.”I was just trying to make the evidence come to light. It’s not like I had the jacket, I didn’t plant the jacket, I didn’t know anything about that. It was the fact of the overwhelming information that led me there.”

It was during a search of Hadsell’s hotel room where he said Norfolk police found 72 rounds of nine-millimeter ammunition. Hadsell doesn’t deny any of the charges or having a lengthy felony criminal record.

“(I) made mistakes,” he said. “I’ve been out of trouble for over 10 years, and I do have successful employment at a business and stuff like that and a good family.”

Hadsell calls himself a changed man, and calls the disappearance of his daughter “overwhelming.”

I don't know if any of this is true or not, but I've seen reference to the former wife several times, this comment gave the most detail.

From the comments:

Quote

Anjelica's second stepdad was indicted by a grand jury for rape, kidnapping, and assault in 2005. On the day the indictment was handed down, AJ's second stepdad kidnapped his estranged wife, Michelle Tallman Hadsell, for two weeks. A national manhunt occurred to find and rescue Michelle. She was eventually rescued from the stepdad by law enforcement officers at a roadside rest stop. Michelle later refused to testify against Wesley, so the District Attorney prosecuted Wesley for felonious restraint, assault, grand larceny, statutory burglary, and many counts of forgery. Wesley, Aj's newest stepdad, was given a 10-year prison sentence and served most of this sentence.

In the first days after AJ's disappearance, Wesley withheld information from police officers. Notice the first missing posters state AJ was last seen at 7 am on March 2nd. This is now known to be untrue. Several days after AJ's disappearance, Wesley came forward and admitted that he saw and spoke to AJ at a gas station around noon, but they didn't talk much. They mostly stared at each other for 45 minutes then she "departed his presence". You can hear Wesley provide this specific information on a podcast operated by Chelsea Hoffman.

Wesley Hadsell no longer resides with AJ's mother. On the gofundme page, Wesley states that the donated money will be used to help his families. The number of families that Wesley has is unknown.

The jacket that Wesley stated was found in some teen male's closet was NOT verified by the police to be AJ's jacket. This unverified information came out from Wesley Hadsell.

The unidentified person that Wesley states interjected himself into the case and is a POI is AJ's first stepdad. The first stepdad raised Anjelica from the age 1 to 14. He has distributed fliers to find AJ, but Wesley and AJ's mom ordered his posters to be ripped down. The first stepdad also put up a $25,000 reward. For many years, the first stepdad has kept a blog of his heartbreaking interactions with Wesley Hadsell and Anjelica. His blog is open for the public to read.

He said it sounded like she was struggling on the other end and tried to dial 9-1-1.

Tallman called for help, rushed home and began looking for Michelle.

Her parents say Michelle's estranged husband Wesley attacked her last week and he was just indicted for rape, kidnapping and felonious assault.

That's why they believe Wesley is behind her disappearance.

Ohio criminal had ex-wife as hostage | 0 comments

An army of state, county and local police collared an armed Ohio kidnapper this morning after an intense manhunt through dense Kankakee County cornfields northeast of Manteno.

His female victim was also recovered unharmed when police dropped the net at 10:39 a.m. at 12000N and 6000E roads.

Wesley Hadsell, described by state police as a career burglar, was thought to be armed and very dangerous. There was no information at presstime whether he was armed at the time of capture. Hadsell was being transported to an area hospital to be checked for injury, noted police.

He was being sought for the Aug. 26 kidnapping and rape of his former wife, Michelle Hadsell. She was with him when he abandoned his car after a police chase that began around 1:05 a.m. today on Interstate 57 near Peotone.

Delaware County, Ohio, sheriff's police, a jurisdiction about 20 minutes north of Columbus, said this morning that the kidnapping was initially reported by the victim's father who'd received a panicked call from his daughter.

Police later found signs of a struggle at her residence.

A patrolling state police trooper ran the plate of Hadsell's car early today near the Peotone rest area and learned the driver was wanted for rape, domestic violence, kidnapping and assault.

Tip on missing Norfolk woman leads divers to pond

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY

Norfolk police divers searched a retention pond in Carrsville most of the day Friday after receiving a tip Thursday night on the disappearance of 18-year-old Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell.

Twelve divers searched the pond, two at a time, that is part of Granville Acres farm on Joyners Bridge Road in the rural area along U.S. 258. They rarely surfaced through the day as they searched.

They didn't find anything relevant to the case, said Daniel Hudson, a police spokesman.

Detectives went out to the area Thursday night to search and returned Friday morning, Hudson said.

"I got up at 7:30 because I heard them shutting the trailer doors," said Steven Hines, who lives in a house across the road from the pond. He said police had asked him whether he had seen a plumbing van. He said he thought he had seen one recently. Hines has lived in the area since 1985.

All afternoon, neighbors sat on their front porches across Walters Highway to watch police camped out at the site with trailers, cars and equipment.

"The kids are scared," Misty Sutton said. "They come home from school yesterday seeing this and they they leave for school seeing this this morning."

The area normally is quiet without the volume of traffic that passed by Friday afternoon.

Detectives took pictures Thursday night, talked to neighbors and searched properties, Sutton said.

"You never have any of this kind of stuff out here," she said.

The owner of the farm and the pond was cooperating, Hudson said.

The tip was not received through the Crime Line, Hudson said. He declined to provide details, citing the ongoing investigation. Detectives, he said, are pursuing all leads.

Stepfather of missing Norfolk woman denied bond

NORFOLK

The stepfather of a missing Longwood University student broke into the home of a police witness earlier this month and threatened four people, according to a prosecutor.

Wesley Hadsell, 36, was denied bond Friday on charges of obstructing justice, breaking and entering and possession of ammunition by a felon.

The search for 18-year-old Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell is entering its 26th day. She was last seen March 2 at her parents' home in Norfolk's Tarrallton neighborhood. She was home for spring break at the time.

In court Friday, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Ashley Coleman said Wesley Hadsell was "seeking to impede" the investigation into his stepdaughter's disappearance. She said he broke into the home of a person who had been questioned by police and assaulted an animal there. She added that Hadsell threatened several police witnesses with violence and harassed at least one with an air horn.

Assistant Public Defender Katherine Currin, Hadsell's attorney, cast the allegations in a different light. She said her client believed AJ Hadsell might have been in the house where the March 6 burglary occurred.

"If he entered this house, it's because he thought his daughter was in grave danger," Currin told the court.

The defense attorney asked the court to release her client on bond or home electronic monitoring. Despite his lengthy criminal history, including convictions for felonious restraint, burglary and bank robbery, Currin said, her client was not a flight risk.

"Mr. Hadsell would very much like to be with his family and help with the search for his daughter," Currin said.

Judge Bruce Wilcox denied the bond request.

Coleman said Hadsell - who has "Game Over" tattooed on his eyelids - was estranged from his wife at the time of his arrest and had been for "weeks." Coleman did not say whether the estrangement occurred before or after AJ's disappearance. She said he was living in a hotel room, where police later found a scale with possible cocaine residue on it and 75 rounds of ammunition hidden in an air conditioning vent.

Coleman said Hadsell told police he had a gun, but they would never find it. He also confessed to ongoing and increasing cocaine use, the prosecutor said.

Today. Anjelica.

 ::snipping3::

One last piece I want to rant about is Wes. Right now I am just gonna say that it really hurt having him adopt Anjelica when she was 15. I felt betrayed by Anjelica, and by Jennifer. Jennifer should have known better than to do all of this. She knew that I was Anjelica's father, but she carelessly gave her to another man. She became very possessive of Anjelica, in my opinion to try to solidify her relationship with Wes. Anjelica was an integral part of that relationship, as she was with Jennifer's and my relationship. She shouldn't have brought a man just out of prison (or any man) to live with my daughters without knowing him and vetting him thoroughly. I found out about his past and took her to court to get my children full time from her. Custody remained as it was (split legal and physical). It hurts listening to him so gallantly refer to her as his daughter. He has only known her since she was 14. This man is absurdly bold. He made that clear from the beginning as he became 'best buds' with Anjelica while I grew further and further apart from her and knew less and less about her life and friends and school and even health and everything. On the other hand, I have been thankful for Anjelica having what appeared to be a solid father-figure in her life. I can only assume his love is genuine and that his attempts to help me rebuild my relationship with Anjelica were genuine. So I am praying for justice. Justice for the wrongs committed against Anjelica throughout her life, not just 2 weeks ago. I am praying for truth and that the lies her mother hides behind be revealed. I believe God is at work here. He is sifting things out. The truth will be what is left. I hope Anjelica sees it one day and embraces it. She is a beautiful person. I pray for her angels to protect her. If I find out she is hurt, I will not know how it would be possible to pick myself up from that. If Jennifer or my daughters ever read this, I am sorry for bad-mouthing your mother. I just can't sit back and pretend everything is alright anymore. I can own up to my mistakes - why can't she??

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY

Human remains have been found during a search in Southampton County for Angelica "AJ" Hadsell, police have confirmed.

The investigation led police this morning to a house in the 34000 block of Smith's Ferry Road, where the remains were discovered oustide about 10 a.m., according to Norfolk police. The remains will be taken to the medical examiner's office for identification and to determine the cause of the death.

The small brick house along the road is surrounded by chest-high brush. The area is marked off with police tape and several police cars are parked nearby.

Officers began searching the area about 8 a.m., said Officer Sam Shenouda, department spokesman.

Because of the high grass and size of the crime scene, police will probably be scouring the area for several days, looking for clues in the overgrown grass, he said. Police believe the house was abandoned.

FBI agents are also involved in the search, said FBI spokeswoman Christina Pullen.

FRANKLIN, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk police say a tip into missing teen AJ Hadsell led them to a home in Franklin Thursday where human remains were found outside the home.

Police say the tip led them to the 34000 block of Smith's Ferry Road in Southampton County. Investigators say human remains were found at that location.

The remains will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further analysis and identification. Police have not confirmed if the remains belong to the missing teen. Hadsell has been missing since March 2.

Wesley Hadsell’s sister doubting brother’s innocence in AJ’s disappearance: “I had blinders on.”
POSTED 5:30 PM, APRIL 9, 2015, BY NADEEN YANES, UPDATED AT 08:15PM, APRIL 9, 2015

Norfolk, Va. – Just hours after police find human remains during a search for missing teen Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell, her aunt speaks to NewsChannel 3.

Wendy Stokes says she’s losing faith in her brother, Wesley Hadsell — AJ’s adoptive father.

“I’m not a judge. I’m not a jury. I’m not saying he’s guilty. I’m not saying he’s innocent, but it’s really hard to have faith in someone when he can’t be honest,” Stokes said.

 ::snipping3::

Since his arrest, Stokes says she’s had her brothers back and believed him when he says he was just trying to find AJ. At least, that was the case until remains were discovered Thursday during a search.

“I have always had faith in my brother no matter what. Every time he has gone to jail, every time he has gone to prison, every time he has gotten into trouble, I have always had faith in him,” she said. “But with everything that has already come out and the charges they got on him I just don’t know. It’s hard to keep that faith.”

When asked if Stokes believes her brother is involved in AJ’s disappearance she said, “I don’t know anymore. At one time, I didn’t think he was, but now I don’t know. In my heart I don’t want to believe he did, but there are things that when you start seeing on TV, places they are looking. I’m his sister you never want to think that anybody in your family could ever do anything like this.”

From jail, Wesley Hadsell has been calling Wendy almost every day and she says in those conversations, red flags popped up. She says his story kept changing and that he asked her to put up a GoFundMe page for him, wanting money for his support rather than to find AJ.

Remains found in search for Norfolk's AJ Hadsell

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY

No one can say whether the remains found Thursday morning beside an abandoned house near the Virginia-North Carolina border are those of Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell.

The medical examiner must identify them, and that takes time, said Cpl. Melinda Wray, spokeswoman for the Norfolk Police Department.

Family and friends gathered at Hadsell’s home in Norfolk to await news from police.

A patrol car was parked outside, the officer there to keep the family informed.

“We’re just praying that all of this is resolved swiftly, and we’re just trying to work together as a family,” said Timothy Moran, a family friend and minister who spoke on their behalf.

Hadsell, an 18-year-old Longwood University freshman, went missing March 2 while at her parents’ home in Norfolk’s Tarrallton neighborhood.

Police scoured a property south of Franklin before removing the body Thursday.

It was found in waist-high grass beside a dilapidated house more than 50 miles from Hadsell’s home.

“Everybody’s mind is going a hundred miles an hour,” Moran said. “Everyone wants Anjelica home. That’s the main goal. It’s not about anybody else but AJ at the moment.”

 ::snipping3::

The investigation led Norfolk police this week to the small brick house in the 34000 block of Smiths Ferry Road.

Neighbors said police began searching the property Wednesday, left and returned Thursday morning.

Officer Sam Shenouda, a department spokesman, said police began searching the area about 8 a.m. Thursday.

The remains were found about 10 a.m.

Police marked off the area in the morning with police tape. By the afternoon, investigators seemed to be focusing most of their attention on a heavily wooded area behind the small house.

“We’ll be out here for a couple days,” Shenouda said. “The property is overgrown, mostly wooded. They’re literally going to be combing through every inch of this property searching for evidence.”

 ::snipping3::

Longwood University, where Hadsell attends college, put out a statement indicating it was closely following news reports.

“As we await further news, our thoughts and prayers remain with AJ’s family at this difficult time,” the statement said.

Hours after the remains were found, Wesley’s sister, Wendy Stokes, told WTKR she was getting suspicious of her brother, who already had a criminal record.

“I’m not saying he’s guilty. I’m not saying he’s innocent, but it’s really hard to have faith in someone when he can’t be honest,” Stokes said.

Longwood University broke the news to the campus community in an emotional statement by President W. Taylor Reveley IV.

2015 News Releases

President Reveley’s email to campus concerning Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell
April 10, 2015

Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell

There is gravely difficult news to share. As you may have begun to hear through news reports, police have identified remains found in Southampton County as those of our missing student, Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell.

Though the weight of this horrible prospect has loomed, today extinguishes our hope of AJ’s safe return and confirms our worst fear. Our thoughts are profoundly with her family. These past weeks, they have endured unimaginable anguish and uncertainty, and now they must confront the terrible grief of this loss.

As we keep AJ's family foremost in our thoughts, our tight-knit community will also feel great heartache. My thoughts are especially with those at Longwood who knew AJ best – her hometown friends, her hallmates, her fellow members of the club softball and club field hockey teams, her professors. I also know how many of you, even if you did not know AJ personally, have been deeply affected and concerned these past weeks. I know how many of you wore ribbons and reached out to friends and family beyond Longwood to raise awareness of the search. We are also grateful to the Longwood Police, who have helped to the utmost in aiding the Norfolk Police in whatever way they could. All of Longwood shares enormously in this grief. I am personally deeply grateful to the Norfolk officials with whom I and others here have been in close touch throughout, and who have worked tirelessly and with such compassion in an investigation that continues.

In the days and weeks ahead, I encourage all of us to reach out – to faculty, friends, student affairs staff and to our counseling center – to share your feelings and support. Days and grief such as this yield nothing except perspective, and call us all to care that much more for one another. At an appropriate juncture and with the wishes of the family, we will look to hold a service on campus in AJ's memory.

President Reveley

AJ Hadsell's family, friends hold softball tournament

NORFOLK

Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell’s family, friends and community gathered Sunday morning to play softball, less than two days after learning she’d died.

Joshua Campbell, Hadsell’s boyfriend, said it was a fitting tribute. The two met on a softball field.

“It was something she did and she loved,” Campbell said. “We know she’s with us right now and we want to see her smile.”

The tournament was held on the Little Creek National Pony Baseball League fields next to Hadsell’s home in the Tarrallton area.

AJ Hadsell’s mother, Jennifer, walked around taking pictures and talking to people.  The family’s team wore shirts with angel wings surrounding No. 6, Hadsell’s jersey number.

On Friday, police said remains discovered a day earlier near an abandoned house in Southampton County were Hadsell’s.

 ::snipping3::

Cassie Wright, a tournament organizer, was a senior softball player at Norview High School when Hadsell made the team – and started – as a freshman.

“She made others strive to do better,” Wright said. “Softball is AJ’s sport and we just thought this would be the perfect thing.”

Tiffany Carter, who also helped organize the tournament, said the people who come to play softball and baseball at the fields in the spring and summer are an extended family.

“The turnout is amazing. This is a big support system,” she said.

There were six teams in the tournament, as well as a few other teams of kids participating, Carter said.

Campbell said if Hadsell’s team was losing, she would always yell and clap, urging her teammates to get in the game.

“She brought the team up, no matter what,” he said. “She would play hard and come back dirty and tired, but with a smile on her face.”

The two had gone to high school together and started dating in February 2014, he said.

“AJ loved everybody,” Campbell said. “When you play ball, you think of her. … We miss her.”

Softball Game Honors Life of Virginia College Student Anjelica 'AJ' Hadsell
Apr 12, 2015, 11:16 AM ET
By EMILY SHAPIRO via GOOD MORNING AMERICA

Family and friends of a Virginia college student whose remains were found this week more than a month after she vanished remembered her today by participating in one of her favorite pastimes.

A softball game honored Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell, whose remains were found Thursday after she disappeared in her hometown of Norfolk, Virginia on March 2 while home during spring break from Longwood University.

Hadsell, 18, was a softball player and junior umpire, ABC affiliate WVEC-TV reported, and her peers recognized her competitive nature and sportsmanship.

"She was so competitive, but once you got by that, you realize that she was such a great and loving person," Bryce Atkins, a friend, told WVEC-TV.

At the opening day for the local softball league on Saturday, one of the fields was dedicated in Hadsell's honor, WVEC-TV reported.

"She always smiled. She never yelled. She always had great sportsmanship and everything," said former teammate Cassie Wright.

Friends and family started organizing today's game several weeks ago to raise awareness about Hadsell's disappearance.

"We just want the whole community to get together just for the support of her family," former teammate Tiffany Carter told WVEC-TV.

AJ Hadsell’s biological father: ‘I just regret not being part of her life’
POSTED 6:58 PM, APRIL 13, 2015, BY MARISSA JASEK

Norfolk, Va. – What happened to AJ? Norfolk Police haven’t named a suspect and we still don’t know how 18-year-old Anjelica Hadsell died.

Those are questions her biological father wants answered.

For the first time we’re hearing from Mel Langer. The pastor and spokesperson for AJ’s family confirmed Langer is her biological father.

“I’d like to know, really know who did it,” Langer says. “And hopefully get justice for what happened to her.”

Langer lives in Jacksonville, Florida and spoke with NewsChannel 3 over the phone. For 18 years, he says AJ has been a distant part of his life — until last month.

“I just regret not being part of her life,” he says. “I guess I didn`t try hard enough.”

Langer says his relationship with Anjelica’s mother unraveled soon after AJ was born.

On March 2, the day she disappeared, Langer says AJ’s mother reached out through Facebook, asking if he’d heard from AJ. However, Langer says they hadn’t talked since last year.

“I`m just heartbroken for me and my family is heartbroken because we didn`t really get to see her, spend time with her, you know she`s gone,” he says.

 ::snipping3::

Langer is the third man to play the role of father in AJ’s life. Last week, we heard from Zach Hoffer, who says he raised AJ for nearly 13 years.

“I`m not known as her dad. You all know who is known as her dad and of course that hurts,” Hoffer told NewsChannel 3.

The dad Hoffer is referring to is Wesley Hadsell, AJ’s legally adoptive father.

Hadsell currently sits in jail for breaking into a woman’s home and obstruction of justice, both charges that are connected to his daughter’s disappearance.

A caller to Chelsea Hoffman's radio show ("Laura" starts at about 29:30 in the show at the link below) identified Corey French as the person that Anjelica was supposedly afraid of; and says it was his house that Wesley Hadsell broke into.  Her information came from Wesley Hadsell during one of the first searches for Anjelica.  She said Corey was an ex boyfriend of Anjelica's, and that he left for boot camp for the Army in Georgia four or five days after Anjelica went missing. (from what I've gathered on FB he left March 9th)  From his fb posts, he was at the police station March 5th.

Her family is once again asking for help finding her and they’re now saying they believe she was taken against her will.

Family and friends of Hadsell have confirmed to 8News sister station WAVY-TV 10 that the missing 18-year-old was on alert and scared of a certain person before her disappearance on March 2.

Hadsell communicated that information to her cousin and best friend between Feb. 13 and the day she vanished. Text messages sent by Hadsell to friends in late February about the person said, “I should probably stop texting him back,” and “HELP.”

“This person supposedly said that he wanted to hang out, and she said she didn’t think it was a good idea,” said Chelsey Zirkle, who had multiple conversations with Hadsell both by phone and in person. “She was more worried that this person would maybe do something, and this person is the person we kind of suspect did something.”

Zirkle said the in-person conversations she had with Hadsell about this person left her in tears.

The family is not naming the person because police have not identified him as a suspect in the case.

“I’d say she’s screaming ‘help,'” Wesley Hadsell said. “She wants someone to find her. She wants us to come get her.”

The desperate search into the Norview High School graduate’s disappearance is now in its eleventh day. Family and friends of missing 18-year-old Anjelica Hadsell say a big piece of their heart is missing.

“My daughter is missing and it’s destroying the family, as far as our emotions,” Mr. Hadsell said.

More than 20 people were out searching for the teenager again Friday. Mr. Hadsell said her cell phone sent a signal from the area of Tidewater Drive near Thole Road in Norfolk.

“She was scared of a situation, and we didn’t know about it,” Mr. Hadsell said. He told WAVY.com that he believes he knows at least one person who is involved.

This poor girl (AJ) had 4 "parents" and all of them seem to put themselves first.  Woulda coulda shoulda.  Too late.   ::MonkeyTears::

AJ should not die without us learning from her life, she had much to teach us and her voice was cut off way too soon.  Hug your kids now, tomorrow is not promised.   ::MonkeyNoNo::  This is so very sad, each one in his or her own way let her down.   ::MonkeyNoNo::  Now they all miss her.

There are so many questions, I find myself asking why after so many things that have happened here.  Not one parent was close enough to know she had a person she was terrified of.  Why?  Why make someone who has a history of hurting women your child's "father?"  This question is not just for AJ's family, but for the other potential AJ's out there.  Your relationship with someone should not cloud your judgment as you decide what is best for your child.  If you are angry at your spouse, get someone who is completely independent and trustworthy to help you make decisions.  Stop using your children as game pieces.  This is real life.  Not a game.

It is interesting her father has "game over" tattooed on his eyelids.  They were playing war games with an innocent child who had her whole life ahead of her.  She was very talented and a valuable contributor to the world around her, especially for someone so young.  Some selfish individual had to have her to himself and not let anyone else have her.  Why take her away?   Why?  ::MonkeyTears::

Prayers for all who love her.

AJ Hadsell’s father believes her final text messages were sent by someone else

POSTED 6:35 AM, JUNE 29, 2015, BY MARISSA JASEK, UPDATED AT 06:55AM, JUNE 29, 2015

Norfolk, Va. – For the first time since Anjelica ‘AJ’ Hadsell`s body was found, her adoptive father Wesley Hadsell spoke exclusively with NewsChannel 3 from behind bars.

Wesley Hadsell believes his own family is setting him up – making it look like he murdered AJ.

We recently learned the 18-year-old died of acute heroin poisoning, but the circumstances surrounding her death are still undetermined.

 ::snipping3::

He also named specific people who he thinks is responsible for AJ’s disappearance and death.

But a lot of the conversation focused on his drug use – and whether AJ had a drug problem.

Wesley shared new details about AJ’s final text messages to him – messages he believes were sent by someone else.

“The text messages from Anjelica were saying that she used heroin two week prior to her disappearance. ”

“Wait a minute. What text messages?”

“Oh you don`t know about those then. Anjelica texted us throughout the day of March 2nd after no one physically saw her after 2 pm I guess. Anjelica’s phone communicated with my phone and her mother’s phone. That`s why in the beginning I said that was not my daughter texting, someone had her phone. I can`t prove that but that person texted us and came out in little bits and pieces that she had used heroin two weeks prior to her death.”

Wesley stood firm in his belief that AJ never had a drug problem – but thinks someone tried to make it look like she did.

New witness comes forward in Hadsell case

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A new witness could testify against Wesley Hadsell in connection with the disappearance and death of his adopted daughter Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell, according to court documents.

In a motion filed Thursday, Hadsell’s public defender Keith Kimball requested for leave to withdraw as his counsel.

Kimball states that another client represented by the same office has come forward with information as well as interests “adverse to those of Mr. Hadsell.”

Federal lawyers believe this witness has information that could directly tie Wesley Hadsell to AJ’s death.

 ::snipping3::

Police arrested Wesley Hadsell on an unrelated charged during their investigation. He became a person of interest in the investigation of AJ’s death — but never a suspect.

“The investigators themselves have been surrounded by this evidence, been wanting to pursue this, wanting to put the person responsible behind bars for AJ Hadsell’s family,” said Officer Daniel Hudson, who would not say if the department was building a case against Mr. Hadsell.

The documents filed Thursday say the witness has already provided information to law enforcement in the hopes of getting a reduction in his or her sentence in a different case.

Wesley Hadsell was set to be sentenced March 18, after he pleaded guilty to a federal weapons charge last November.

There’s no word if his sentencing will be postponed.

The Mysterious Death of AJ Hadsell: One Year Later
By Joe Fisher
Published: March 2, 2016, 7:22 am  Updated: March 2, 2016, 7:55 pm

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Loved ones are still waiting for closure one year after Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell disappeared.

The girl who family and friends say had bright future vanished on March 2, 2015. She was last seen by a neighbor near her home on Millard Street in the Tarralton neighborhood.

The star athlete, college freshman and loving daughter, sister and friend was later found dead on an abandoned property 50 miles from her home. To this day, no one in the public knows how she got there.

“She’s always on my mind,” said Jennifer Hadsell, who says she thinks about the case everyday. “You don’t stop thinking about it … Some days you play over things that ‘were there signs? What would you do differently?'”

Mrs. Hadsell says she believes text messages sent from her daughter’s phone in the two days following her disappearance were being answered by someone else. Then, communication cut off and was never reconnected.

 ::snipping3::

In the midst of the search, police arrested Wesley Hadsell, her adoptive father, on unrelated charges. He became a person of interest in the case — but never a suspect.

Mr. Hadsell admitted to 10 On Your Side from jail that he broke into a home to investigate his daughter’s mysterious absence and found the jacket she was last seen wearing.

Mr. Hadsell has maintained his innocence when asked by 10 On Your Side’s Joe Fisher  if he was involved in his adopted daughter’s case.

April 9, 2015, the 38th day of the search, police say “their investigation” led them to an abandoned home on Smiths Ferry Road in Franklin. They found human remains that were positively identified as Hadsell the next day.

In June, the medical examiner said Hadsell died from acute heroin poisoning, but her manner of death was ruled undetermined.

Eric Korslund, who represented Mr. Hadsell on various state charges before they were dropped, says the undetermined death could prove to be difficult for investigators.

“I think the biggest unknown is ‘was she murdered?'” said Korslund. “If [police] tried to prove or persuade anybody that Wesley Hadsell was responsible for her death they are going to have to show that he put heroin in her body without her permission [and] without her consent. That would be the only way they could prove homicide against Wesley Hadsell in my opinion.”

Korslund believes the best evidence against Hadsell are GPS coordinates from his work truck that put him just feet from the home where AJ’s body was found.

“It raises suspicioun, absolutely,” said Korslund. “There is that connection there; but again, nobody knows what happened inside that house.”

Norfolk police says there’s been progress behind-the-scenes, but they did not release any new details for this story in fear of compromising the case.

 ::snipping3::

Mrs. Hadsell is hoping persistence from the authorities will eventually pay off in the form of an arrest.

“No matter how fast the charges are brought and the charges are done nothing is going to bring her back,” said Mrs. Hadsell. “Get it right. So the person who did it is held accountable for what they did.”

Documents: Authorities believed Hadsell abducted AJ
POSTED 7:45 AM, OCTOBER 8, 2015, BY BECCA MITCHELL, UPDATED AT 09:25PM, OCTOBER 8, 2015

Norfolk, Va. -  Wesley Hadsell is now facing a new charge for possession of heroin, NewsChannel 3 has learned.

The charge was filed Wednesday.

Hadsell has been in jail for the last 8 months on charges that arose from the police investigation into the disappearance and death of his adopted daughter Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell.

"There`s no question that they`re looking at him under a microscope and they have been for a very long time," says Eric Korslund, Hadsell's attorney for the heroin charge.

Investigators have never publicly named Hadsell as a suspect, but new federal court filings reveal they believed Hadsell abducted AJ. The documents say for a week in March detectives conducted surveillance on him.

They watched Hadsell driving erratically, changing his clothes, at one point even wearing a mask to hide his face. The records say police used that as probable cause to then search Hadsell's hotel room.

We've known for a while federal agents found bullets -- last month he was charged with possession of ammunition as a felon. However, for the first time we're learning what else police found in his room that day.

"9 millimeter rounds, white socks, a game system, lap top, shoes paperwork and duct tape. No heroin is listed whatsoever," Korslund says.

Investigators also found suspected drug residue during a search. After formal analysis by the Virginia Division of Forensic Science, the substance was confirmed to be heroin. We still don't know where police discovered the heroin, only that they found it on the same day they searched Hadsell's hotel.

"I think this evidence applies to other individuals," Korslund says. "There was other individuals in this hotel room who may have had a motive to harm AJ who had a closer relationship than just her step dad. He`s one piece of the puzzle."

Another older article with good info imo.

The mystery behind the discovery of AJ Hadsell’s body
POSTED 7:20 PM, OCTOBER 28, 2015, BY BECCA MITCHELL, MIKE MATHER AND MARISSA JASEK, UPDATED AT 06:32PM, OCTOBER 30, 2015

Southampton County, Va. - Law-enforcement sources are telling NewsChannel 3 that investigators in April used tracking data stored inside a GPS taken from Wesley Hadsell’s work van to find his adopted daughter’s body.

Our sources said that when they examined that data, it led them directly to a house on Smiths Ferry Road in Southampton County. There, on April 9, Norfolk police and other agents assisting them found human remains later identified as those of Anjelica “AJ” Hadsell. She had been missing a month and was the subject of a massive search.

At the time, police declined to say what led them to that abandoned brick ranch near the North Carolina line, but now sources are revealing they essentially followed a trail stored in a GPS unit.

Those sources said the trail showed the GPS typically used by Wesley Hadsell indicates the unit traveled south on Smiths Ferry Road, past the abandoned house, and continued into North Carolina. There, according to the sources, the track shows the GPS unit turned around and traveled back into Virginia. The track took the GPS into the driveway of the house.

Wesley Hadsell has told NewsChannel 3 repeatedly he was familiar with that area of Southampton County because his work for a company called Quality Plumbing and Mechanical often took him there. But in an interview with NewsChannel 3’s Marissa Jasek, he denied he had ever been to that house.

 ::snipping3::

Law-enforcement sources also told NewsChannel 3 they have records and a video showing Hadsell bought gas not far from the abandoned house. The sources said the video shows Hadsell looking around nervously as he fueled his van. That video is mentioned briefly in a federal court filing by Hadsell’s attorney, Keith Kimball. However, Kimball wrote the video depicts “nothing.”

Before AJ’s body was found, Norfolk police charged Hadsell with interfering in their investigation. Hadsell admitted he broke into a neighbor’s house, where he told NewsChannel 3 he found AJ’s college jacket. That neighbor told us police later questioned him about AJ’s disappearance. He told investigators he had nothing to do with it and that he passed a lie-detector test.

Police later dropped Hadsell’s state charges, but federal prosecutors indicted Hadsell for being a felon in possession of ammunition. Police said when they arrested Hadsell at a hotel, they found bullets in his room. A search of his cell phone later uncovered a video showing him and AJ at a Chesapeake shooting range in December, 2013.

Norfolk detectives have refused to talk about this case in public. But court filings make it clear they were investigating Hadsell for AJ’s disappearance. A Norfolk police search-warrant, filed under seal, says police wanted to search Hadsell’s hotel room. Under the crime they were investigating, they wrote, “murder,” according to federal court filings. The medical examiner said AJ died of acute heroin poisoning. No one has been charged in her death.

Those federal court filings also show police seized and searched Wesley Hadsell’s iPhone 6. The documents for that search have been sealed. But our sources say investigators were able to see that Hadsell’s cell phone, and AJ’s cell phone were together around the time she was last seen. The sources would not be more specific. From court filings, it appears AJ’s phone wasn’t used after she vanished. Hadsell has said he was not with AJ on March 2, the day she was last seen. Hadsell told Jasek in an interview he and his wife began receiving strange texts from AJ’s cell phone that day, indicating she had been using heroin. Hadsell told us he believes someone else was sending those messages.

 ::snipping3::

NewsChannel 3 contacted the Norfolk Police Department for a comment to this story. Public affairs Officer Melinda Wray sent this statement:

"The Norfolk Police Department wants to ensure the public that Anjelica's case is both active and open. Norfolk detectives have been and will continue to pursue each and every lead presented. NPD remains committed to providing Anjelica and her family the justice they deserve, and the department's work is not complete until that day comes."

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A federal judge sentenced Wesley Hadsell to 20 years in prison Tuesday for an ammunition charge that dated back to 2013.

Hadsell pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Arenda Wright Allen considered the totality of Hadsell's criminal history, which began when he was 12, and ruled he was an armed career criminal.

The classification increased the minimum sentencing guideline for Hadsell from 10 years to 15 years.

The judge's sentence of 20 years is five more years than the prosecution requested, and surprised Hadsell's defense attorney Jason Dunn.

"Obviously we're disappointed today in the court's ruling today on the armed career criminal classification of my client that enabled her to double his sentence," said Dunn. "He was only going to be subject to to 10 years before that and we intend to appeal."

Hadsell first came into the spotlight after his stepdaughter, 18-year-old Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell disappeared in 2015.

Police discovered the ammunition while searching the hotel room where Hadsell was staying.

Judge Wright found it "mind-boggling" and "brazen" for Hadsell to knowingly possess ammunition given his criminal record.

"There's no question in the court's mind that we're safer as a society if you're not here for a while," Wright said.

Hadsell has not been charged in his stepdaughter's death.

Investigators found Hadsell's body in April 2015 near an abandoned home in Southampton County. The medical examiner's office determined she died from acute heroin poisoning.

Hadsell, 38, still faces another charge for the heroin police found in the hotel where he kept the ammo.
