April Beth Pitzer was last seen in the vicinity of the 30000 block of Caspian Way in Newberry Springs, CA. She told her roommate that she was leaving on a bus to visit her mother in Arkansas, but never arrived. Pitzer had also been a model for a variety of clothing stores in Arkansas and Texas. She left behind two young daughters, whom she reportedly doted upon.

In December 2005, clothing was found in a mine shaft in Ludlow, California. In January 2006, April's mother positively identified the clothing as belonging to her daughter. There was no other sign of April at the scene. April has a medical condition and requires medication.

A New Life
Friends and family say that April Pitzer was looking to start a new life when she moved from Arkansas to Newberry Springs, Calif. in the summer of 2003.  In the midst of a divorce from her husband, April headed west and soon made numerous friends in her new home.

However, a year later, April decided it was time to return to Arkansas, this time to live with her mother, Gloria Denton.  Cops say April never made it home and her whereabouts remain a mystery.

At the time of her disappearance, April was living with a friend, Chuck Hollister.  Police learned that on April 26, 2004, Hollister agreed to drive April around town and say goodbye to friends.  The next day, Chuck and April spent the day packing her belongings, although April never spoke of how exactly she was getting back to Arkansas.  When Chuck awoke the next morning, April was still sound asleep, but when he returned later that day, she was gone.

Police tell AMW that Chuck believed that April had either gotten a ride or was given money for a bus ticket.  Detectives even checked Hollister's residence for signs of April but came up empty-handed.  When cops began questioning April's friends, they all believed the same thing...that Pitzer had found her way back to Arkansas.

The cryptic message said "want to find missing girl from Arkansas? I-15 3 miles east of Barstow."
Questions Surround Woman's Disappearance
April's mom began to worry since Pitzer is known to suffer from bi-polar disorder.  They usually spoke every week, and it had been weeks since Denton had heard from her daughter.

Local authorities began posting missing person fliers around town.  However, the first lead would come not locally, but from over 800 miles away.  On September 7, 2004, detectives were contacted by Deputy Daniel Carr from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in Oregon.  Carr said he had been sent to a Love's truck stop in Roseberg, Oregon to check out a suspicious message written on a bathroom wall.  The cryptic message said "want to find missing girl from Arkansas?  I-15 3 miles east of Barstow."

Deputy Carr photographed and collected all latent prints from the bathroom stall and retrieved the truck stop's surveillance footage.  While he sent all the results to cops in California, no leads developed.  Nevertheless, deputies from Barstow, Calif. Sheriff's Station investigated the area three miles off the 15 freeway but found no sign of April.

On September 9, 2004, detectives got another lead in the case.  An employee working for Barstow City Transportation sold a bus pass to a woman who, when seeing April's missing person poster, said "I know her, she's dead and stuffed in a hole and I know what hole she's in."

Detectives tracked down the woman who told them that she had known April for about a year.  The woman had heard rumors that April had been killed and the body was hidden out in the desert.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that Chuck Hollister and his friends were known to hang out in a group of inactive mines in the desert area 5 miles south of Ludlow, Calif.  At that point, authorities turned their attention to the numerous gold mines, most from the late 1800's, hoping that one may provide clues as to April's  whereabouts.  It was at these mines that Mike Melson of the volunteer group Equusearch began leading multiple, thorough searches.  Currently, authorities and Melson continue to check the mines for signs of April.

Chuck Hollister died of cancer in September 2006 but authorities believe that there is someone out there who knows what happened to April Pitzer.

Reward offered in 2004 missing mom case

NEWBERRY SPRINGS - In the three years since April Beth Pitzer's disappearance, sheriff's detectives have followed one lead after another, each time coming up empty-handed. They've probed mine shafts, run DNA tests and analyzed the walls of a truck stop restroom in Oregon in search of the mom who went missing from Newberry Springs in June 2004.

Now, a $50,000 reward is being offered for the recovery of Pitzer and the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her disappearance. Let's Bring Them Home - a group of "advocates for the missing," according to the Web site, www. letsbringthemhome.org - is sponsoring the reward. Det. Steve Pennington of the San Bernardino County Homicide Detail hopes the reward will spark someone's interest in coming forward.

"We know that somebody knows something," he said. "It's just whether or not they will talk."

According to reports, Pitzer, a mother of two, went missing on her way from Newberry Springs to Arkansas, where she was originally from. Pennington began working on the case as a detective out of the Barstow station. When he was transferred to the homicide detail, he took the case with him and has worked on it since.

"She does have a family, she does have kids, and nobody's heard from her in three years," Pennington said.

The popular television show "America's Most Wanted" recently posted Pitzer's story on their Web site, www.amw.com. According to the Web site, deputies received an early tip in September 2004 from a Douglas County Sheriff's Department in Oregon. A deputy found a cryptic message in a truck stop restroom in Roseberg, Ore., with apparent directions to Pitzer's body written in black.

"Want to find missing girl from Arkansas? I-15 3 miles east of Barstow," the message read.

Pennington said the Douglas County Sheriff's Department dusted the restroom for prints and San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies followed up on the tip. Pennington was out near Interstate 15 looking for clues last weekend, he said.

"We've been picking it apart, piece by piece, on both sides of the freeway," he said. "But after three years, it's hard to know."

The nexus of the case shifted to the Ludlow area later in September 2004, when someone told deputies Pitzer's body had been stashed in a mine shaft. Since that time, Pennington said that deputies have search more than 25 mine shafts with no results.

Another potential break in the case happened when deputies found a mattress and sheet in the Ludlow desert stained with blood and bodily fluids. After a much-anticipated DNA test in 2006, the blood turned out not to be human and the trail turned cold again, Pennington said.

Pennington then turned to the last person to see Pitzer, Chuck Hollister.

"I was hoping this person she was last living with, Chuck Hollister, would shed some light on this before he died," he said.

Unfortunately, he did not.

In and out of the hospital with health complications, Hollister spoke with Pennington twice before he died of cancer in 2006.

"We are grateful for the support shown by Governor Beebe and his staff.  They understand that the most terrifying experience a family can encounter is the realization that a loved one is missing.  We believe that by establishing this day for missing adults, that families can come together and support one another while remembering their loved one," says Meredith.

"It is also our hope that every media outlet in Arkansas will pick up this information so families of the missing across the state can get
involved.  We need everyone to be involved."

Its hard to discern from the press releases about the wisdom of these geographical decisions that were being made. It seems she did have a history of suddenly moving around the country almost on a whim, however the latest departure seems suspicious.
It is strange to think of anyone choosing a bus for such a trip and I wonder if this 'driving around town to say goodbye' ever took place. How is it she had so many friends to bid farewell to but none of them knew of the details of her travel plans?

It just doesn't seem as if she really had any intent to return to Arkansas. Where were the children located? Is there any sort of check being received for their care? Who would have benefited from her death financially?

There is no doubt there was foul play and also why she chose a bus as means for transportation as I dont think a private jet was in her means. Unfortunately she never made it on that bus. What she did in the past has no relevance why she has been missing all this time. She was going through a very difficult time,was very vulnerable and she ran into some very devious people at the worst time. Why do you think she had no intent on going home with her family and young children? What makes you think there were other factors involved besides a couple of dirt bags that lied about what they did to her?

April, DID NOT have a history of moving around the country on a whim..What part of anything did you get that from? I am her Mother, and I know her habits very, very well. Wrong too about her having NO INTENT to return to Arkansas. April was elated and overwhelmed with relief and joy to have finally told the condition her life had actually become. April was married to a multimillionaire's son. April as well as his first wife and all seven girlfriends since April's disappearance were NOT GOOD ENOUGH. April was treated horribly. Unfortunately because April DID HAVE EVERYTHING and they all appeared to be the "perfect" family with the perfect life, I ignorantly did the same thing that you have done. I couldn't believe things weren't as they appeared and took all of her pleas for me to open my eyes up as everything being because she had recently been diagnosed bipolar, and was manic and over reacting. Even though I knew a DR. HAD NOT diagnosed her as bipolar only a nurse practitioner. Who these days has the legal power to diagnosis and prescribe proper medication. Funny April never was Bipolar acting until she became a part of this family. My deepest regret is blinding myself to my daughters needs, because everything seemed perfect.. I can NEVER make that up to her. But for certain she did know before she went missing that I had seen the true colors of the millionaires, and was so sorry I had not believed her more than I did.
Okay, as far as the bus to come home. April didn't choose a bus. I did!! April was penniless and i was strapped for money as we were in the process of moving back to the state of Arkansas to help with my ailing Mother-in-law. We had been keeping up two homes for three months. I had just paid off all our current bills in Texas, and the move cost thousands of dollars. With nothing solid for work yet, I had to be logical and I chose the bus. Another reason, Newberry Springs is 3 hours from the Vegas airport with normal traffic and 3 hours from L.A. and there was nobody with dependable transportation as well.
I would greatly appreciate your reading the facts before you go making April out to be so careless and irresponsible...she wasn't. She made a bad choice on a whim...Have You Ever? I certainly have. April had never been away from her girls, and she loved all of her family more than anything. Sorry,you had to read that post first as he was ignorant and didnt read the facts before posting. I truly admire your will to get the truth about your beautiful daughter and your efforts to bring her home. I have also followed Gloria's journey and I love the support that she receives at BFN. I hope that you receive the same support here. Honestly, I am outraged at the detective who was first in charge and these desert scum who most likely harmed your daughter. I want to see justice and for you to get the answers that you deserve. You have networked yourself nicely and with the new detective in charge I hope answer's will come soon.

I still need to read up on all the facts gloria so please bare with me. I know chuck had lied before he died and most likely knew the truth. Do you think Dan is the main suspect or is it possibly a truck driver? Can you tell us the most credible leads to focus on? Is it possible to give us a summary in your journey to find the truth about april?

Hello Gloria, you are welcome. I have no idea, about why this person has wrote this. But it can be a strays track. Or this info is not really correct and that it have something to do with 3 miles from a freeway.

Well I think this vagrant, can be on of the most interesting persons in this case. And traveled much in and around the area from the freeway 40. Between place of: Ludlow, California, Newberry Springs, CA and place's around that area/county/part of state, of 50-150 miles.
April was last see in Newberry Springs. And clothing was found in a mine shaft in Ludlow, California. That is around 33 miles from her home. And I think u can many scenario's thinking where she is and what there is happened with her. But I am sure, one of the scenario's is a good scenario and is come.

Yes, Dan is definitely on our list of key suspect. Another man as well. I cannot mention his name right now as we are currently staking him out. Chuck IMO knew exactly what happened to April, but remained a loyal friend. I think that April knew far too much about the selling and transporting of the dope. They discovered she had dated a DEA officer and was a states wittiness on several busts that went right to that place. I believe these people were busted while April was working undercover, and several including the other suspect were sent to prison in 1998. April I firmly believe was setup and led to her death. I believe the people who took her and talked her into going with them to Calif had given her a mind altering drug and got her there and dumped her for the obvious reason, to get rid of her.
After April was forced to testify when she was eight months pregnant with her first baby is when she started living in a world of paranoia. it was in the courtroom she realized she had helped to bust people clear to California that the FBI had been working a sting on for years.
April completely changed, and lived in constant fear. I know personally that she was receiving threatening phone calls. Even with a different name and an unlisted number somebody always found her.
What are the odds of her being dumped thousands of miles from home in the very area that was part of your testimony that sent people to prison nearly seven yrs prior. And for the VERY ones to befriend you, get you doing drugs, all messed up and desperate, and then as soon as they find out and realize you have come clean with your family and you won't take the dope anymore, all of a sudden as you are preparing to return to your family you step into the key drug dealers house (actually are taken there) and when you walk in there sits a person you sent their husband to prison and placed them on 10 yrs probhation and caused temporary loss of their child?? What are the odds? I am convinced there is a huge link between the previous drug bust, April's testimony, and April's last months of life. Her disappearance I feel was planned from the get-go. I think some of those involved wanted her to get all deep into the drugs and its dealers before they revealed themselves, and gave her up. I think it was well planned. She was not dealing with armatures

You are right on about the mileage.  Yes, this vagrant actually lived in a camper behind locked gates on Chuck's property 30,900 caspian Way in Newberry,Springs
he and Chuck owned an old Red truck also with a camper shell on it, i believe. he last known time seen and a pic captured of him out at the locations, was driving a truck. ******* SoCal and his family came face to face with him out there on their first search. I think perhaps he said a dark blue little truck.
Yes, he travels. When i identified April's clothes in Jan 2005 he left the country. He was not seen again until Socal spotted him. we know right where he is.There are some really good pics I will see if I can get SoCal to share here. He sprays graffati everywhere he goes. And he is a note writed. After lookung closely at the note on the wall, I sorta think he wrote it...and not a truckdriver.When you see his actual handwriting you can compare for yourselves

Gloria, my heart goes out to you and your family.  I hope you are able to find your beloved daughter.  Please know that most here on SM are good and caring.  Once in a while we get a poster that makes jerk comments and I'm very sorry for that.  I like that you as the mother of one of our missing here at SM rebutted the insensitive post Fools made.  You are a strong woman Gloria, and I can feel through your posts that you are determined and that you will continue in your quest to find April.  Please know  too that for some of our posters, English is not their first language, such as NYC_lover, hence the post/posts you may have had trouble reading.  NYC is sincere in her posts here among our missing, imo.   Again, I hope you can find your daughter.

I had not heard about April until her info was posted here. I'm glad it was brought over from BFN. The more people who know about her, the better. April deserves to go home to her family.

TODD: Very pretty girl.  She was going to just travel through I-40 and I know that I-40 goes in Barstow California, goes right through Arkansas and right through my backyard here in Tennessee.  Just a cross country and a lot of people do go missing along that pathway.  Do you know about how far she got?  How far you think that she got?  Because I understand some clothing was found.

GLORIA: I don't think she ever got out of Newberry Springs. I don't believe she got anywhere.  Her clothing….it seems….when April got out there…it's just a sad story.  I had mailed her two boxes of clothes.  When I finally got a hold of this guy, this Uncle Chuck it was like on July 16th, 17th…somewhere in there.  He said: "I'm sorry I haven't been in touch with you, but I've been helping a friend move".  I thought: "Yah right…for a month…uh-huh."  Anyhow, I asked him when was the last time he'd seen April.  He said: "Well, ah…I got up and I went to work on…" and we nailed it down because it was the morning after he had taken her to Barbara's to get her stuff, which that would have made it June the 28th.  He said: "I got up that morning at 6:00 am, went to work, April was asleep in her bedroom and I came home that evening at 5:00 pm and April was gone and a couple of changes of clothes and her I.D."  I always thought that was odd that he made a point to say that her I.D was taken too.  I said: "Well where did she go?"  He said: "Well she went to spend a couple of nights over with Steve and Tonya's house".  And I said "Oh."  He said: "And I haven't seen her since then."  I said: "Where are her clothes?" "Where are her things?"  And he told me very plainly "Oh, their here.  I'm looking at her desert boots right now.  And there's her gym bag".  Money was depleted at that point.  I told him: "Chuck, I don't know how I'm going to get there, but I'm coming there and please do not do anything with her clothes or anything.  Please keep everything there for me."  He told me: "Ok, I will."  In the meantime a missing person's case had been taken.  And a female detective Marie Spain was working April's case at that time.  I called her and I said: "Chuck Hollister responded and he's at his house."  And she said: "Ok, I'm gonna go out there."  So she goes out to Chuck's home and he tells her: "Went to work at 6:00 am, came home at 5:00 pm and April and all her clothes were gone, everything she owns is gone."

TODD: So the story changed there.

GLORIA: Yes.

TODD: Now; Uncle Chuck, do you know this man?

GLORIA: No. Spoke to him numerous times on the telephone.  He always seemed polite.  He has since died. He died of cancer; unfortunately, about three months ago.  But to his dying breath, he swore that he does not know what happened to April Beth.

TODD:  Was he ever a suspect interviewed by law enforcement?

GLORIA: He was interviewed; yes, as a person of interest and he will always be.  You know because I dug her clothes up.  They were scattered across the Mojave Desert.  At a mine that he and another guy "Dan Dansbury".  They would go out there and they would mine and plus come to find out that they cooked drugs out there and everything else.  It was just a drug hangout.  So, if April's stuff was at his house….and let me tell you, the story changed again.  About six weeks after that, when Marie Spain was there, she said: "Well, can I come in and look around to see if there's anything around that might give me a clue as to where April might have gone?"   Well, he wouldn't let her come in the house.  She had no warrant and couldn't make him let her come in. So about six weeks later another detective; a male, Detective Hinijoas goes to the house to try and see if he gets anywhere with Chuck.  Chuck let's him come in to the house and said: "Ok, the truth is April left.  She didn't want her Mom to have to buy her ticket.  She met a truck driver and took off with this truck driver and he was gonna take her home.  She left all her stuff her and said she'd be back in three weeks to get it and here it is."  So, if April's stuff was there in his trailer, then how did it get thirty miles away in the desert and me dig it up?"

TODD: Well, that's what we're going to talk about.  How you got to that point.  But I'm going to give the phone number to the investigating agency; the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department,  760-256-4838.  You've already got the cast listed with the NCIC, the local investigator case number.  It's very important that if anyone has any tips to please contact that agency, to pass that tip along.  Now what got you to that point?  What got you to the point….how did you know to go to this mine?

GLORIA:  Ok, from the very beginning I got my phone bill out, because actually April had been diagnosed bi-polar and when Barbara called and made the police report, I called as soon as I was contacted by the sheriff's department.  I called and was told that it would be assigned a detective.  Well, it was like a week that went by, with my calling every day.  Actually they weren't alarmed, because of the fact that she and her husband in Texas have been having trouble, she'd gone to California, she was diagnosed bi-polar and was off her medication.  I was point blank told: "If we look for everybody out here that are bi-polar and off their medication, we'll never get any real crimes solved."

TODD:  Well, I can understand their frustrations at some point. It seems very callus to family members, because there are thousands and thousands….

GLORIA:  I understand.

TODD: Sometimes their not legitimate…it's not a legitimate case.  Not excusing the facts of course.

GLORIA:  Right.

TODD:  You've got to really sift through them and I've learned that from direct experience at times.  I've been sent down some trails that just weren't right.

GLORIA:  Right, right.

TODD:  So, you went out there.

GLORIA: Well, the coroner; David Van Norman (guest on Episode 15)…when nothing was happening and I later found out there were only 5 detectives that work a 22,000 square mile area…

TODD:  Mostly desert.

GLORIA: Yep, yep.  So, I knew their hands were really tied and like I said, I was only a voice on the phone.  So, I did what no mom wants to do, I started calling morgues.  And David Van Norman, who is the chief coroner there with San Bernardino he's just been an angel sent by God.  He started helping me.  In fact, he's the one that sent the kit for the DNA, my DNA to be submitted and her father's.  He was working another missing person's case.  Well, rumor had it all along that April had been murdered and thrown out there in one of those mines that Chuck and Dan Dan regulared.  Then in December, well they were checking in San Bernardino; in that area, and Newberry Springs; that area, for the mines.  Well there were no listings tied to either of their names.  Then in December of 2004, a person said to me that the mine was located in Ludlow California.  So I called Detective Sang and she immediately found where it was and went out to the mines.  She called me on the 22nd day of December and told me that they had gone to the mines and that they had taken cadaver dogs and the cadaver dogs all laid down at this air shaft.  See at these mines, these air shafts are twenty, maybe forty feet from the main entry to the mines.  From the way I understood it, the dogs were laying down at this air shaft, itself.  So they went down in to the mines and there were three other shafts drilled out through there and they were under water…a couple of them.  Anyhow, these dogs laid down and they brought out another search and rescue team with more dogs and all the dogs went to this shaft and lay down there.  They searched for 12 hours and it started raining. You just have to see this desolate desert place that they were at to see that they just had to get out of there to understand they just had to get out because the mine could have collapsed and also they could have been stuck in there.  So, then they went back on the 27th of December of 2004 and Marie called me from out at the mines and said "Gloria, I'm going to tell you this because I know that you know what it means.  We let the dogs out again and the dogs wouldn't lay down this time. That means, April's been moved.  I think that this one shaft that had not been, that the dirt hadn't been disturbed before…there's a lot of disturbance there now and it's just a black hole that goes on and on and on and it's under water that's about forty or fifty feet of water.  I think that's where April's at."

 I want to say thank-you to all of you for your warm welcome here. Your heartfelt support and kind words. I love my daughter more than anyone other than God. April beth was/is the joy of my life. I so...........miss her. She was so beautiful and full of life. Poor thing, just forced into a desperate situation. I so..........wish I could have saved her.
I know in my heart and I accept that April has moved on. she is in Heaven with God and Angels. with our loved ones gone before her. With Natalee,Patty,Billy, Nita, Clinton, Pat, Laci. Kent. Allison,Kara, and on and on... Our sons and daughters and us will be reunited and be together forever in a land of "perfection" and for "eternity" this life is just a psssing in that journey and time to come. I look forward to being with April again. I can't wait to smeel her hair, and feel her kiss upon my cheek and the tender squeeze of her hand in mine as she passes me by, and to hear that precious voice say" I love you so much Momma"
Tommorw will forever be promised in that world and time. Here nothing is a gurantee, other than we will die and leave this life. And we have the chance while we are in this life to be given "eternal life" and lead others to that life as well.
I do believe that "For every purpose under the sun...there is a season" a time to laugh, a time to cry...and a time for everything in it's time. My time left here I am a voice for my beautiful daughter since some selfish person took her voice away from the rest of us. I am doing exactly what I was born to do, and so has April. God has used April's tragic ending to make an enormous difference in the lives of others here. She has been a big help, and all she evr wanted to do was "save somebody" well pretty girl, you have led many home, and given many hope. I can't wait to see you again.

I remember at BFN you saying something about a witness who overheard something at a truck stop??.Did you also mention someone else was arrested recently? I think I understand April's story now and all the focus is on these desert rats and not some truck driver. From what you have told us about Dan he is one sick individual. How was he able to leave the country? With drug money from making meth? He looks like a low life trailer desert rat with little means. These guys must cook up meth in the desert and sell it along the west coast including someone possibly in oregon. That desert area is very desolate and very difficult to search I would imagine when temps are well over 100 degrees.

I still dont understand the timeline of events and would like to get that mapped out when you have the time as well as anything that shows there guilt. One thing that I remember you telling us is about that first detective and I am still disgusted by her comments. Was she just ignorant or was she payed off? I really feel that you are on the right track and I am hoping something positive happens soon. These dirtbags need to be brought to justice and april deserves to be brought home.

Do you mean from when she went missing and what was told to me, missing, the clothes, the searches..I will also say to you guys what IMO points to guilt.
Those guys did cook meth out at the mines and in long abaonded storage tanks from mining in years past. Keep in mind this area is the very place that the California Gold Rush, the Mother Lode, and that Boraxite was first found. Ludlow was the "ONLY" place that had water within hundreds of miles across the Mojave.That is how it became known, the RR using the water and the Mining Companies. oregon is indeed a place these guys regulared. As a matter of fact supposedly that is where "Chuck and Dan-Dan" had been was why Chuck was not returning my calls. Moving a "friend " up there. Sometimes I wonder if that "friend" was that of April. As the more I look at the handwriting on the bathroom wall, it looks like Dan'Dans. He is notorious for writing stuff on walls,old cars,shacks,storage tanks. It is like he leaves atrail of where he has been by the graffatti he writes. His signature spreads in a 20mile area across the Mojave where April went missing.
I must admit,until yesterday and seeing that note so very "clearly" on this thread. I had never noticed how much like Dan-Dan's writing it is. I am emailing the det. soon as I get off here. we have PLENTY of things Dan has written to compare by.
crazybabyborg, I usually use a butterfly as it means "new life" and so does "April" but I just love these crazy monkeys. Sure send me a few to pick from. April loved monkeys too. As an infant her favorite toy was a Monkey named "Peabody" her Dad had a pet spider monkey in Vietnam and called him "Peabody"

Sound's like these guys were cooking up massive amounts of meth amphetamine and distributing it. They really need to be taken off the streets and you deserve to know what happened to April. Makes me wonder how many more crimes these guys have commited and others that have been hurt by them? That would be awesome if you can link that handwriting to him and get him in prison where he belongs!!

I am so excited to announce that today has been declared Awareness Day for Missing Adults for the state of Arkansas. The Proclamation will be presented tonight at the Towne Center in Fayeteville. I have tried for 3 yrs to get this date sat at the day. when April went mising I held the first candelight in the state on the 20th of August. It is April's daughters' birthday. April's daughter Bradley Elisa is April's first born, and April is mine.
The Arkansas non-profit and Missing Adults organization and the founder LaDonna joined my efforts and made this happen. I am so.........excited.
Just recieved word that the president is working on a date for a group of us to meet with him in D.C.  in the very near future, Another project I have been working with others on for well over a year...Very excited.
We have a petition that we are seeking signatures for the missing to be acknowledged and August 20th be declared Missing awareness Day across the board for our Missing Adults. We are delivering this petition to him. Hoping to get one million signatures. we have several hundred thousands already.
Also, i have noticed something "very" interesting in April's case that I will be working on. I think I have even greater proof dan is the man.

I also want to add it is truly an unfortunate way to get something great to happen.  I cannot even begin to imagine what the last 3 years of your life has been like.  I don't know if you ever heard of the story of Heather Teague (Kentucy).  She was the first cousin of Sue Ann Ray (Georgia) who was murdered by her _________ husband.  Heather's mother is in my thoughts and prayers continuously as she too has no real answer as to what happened to her beautiful, young daughter.  She went missing on a beach along the river.  From a distance a man saw her being taken against her will.  Not to be misunderstood, they (LE) and others, do have a good idea of what happened and who the parties involved were, but NOTHING has panned out since.  Perhaps her mother is someone you'd wish to contact.  She too is hurting, waiting for justice, and answers.  And I truly believe as long as there are people out there who won't let sleeping dogs lie (so to speak) the answers may be just around the corner.  Just a thought.

My opinion is the the N in MiNe looks alot like the N in MissiNg in the first picture.

Hello Gloria! I have been reading April's story. I am so sorry. I know one thing for sure, if I ever went missing, I would want to have a wonderful mother like you. God bless you!

I'm not a betting person, but my gut says this Chuck guy is the one who murdered April and disposed of her in the mines. I also do not think she had bi-polar, but was drugged. Chuck found out she was leaving and he killed her.
Someone else knows something, I'd look to Chucks drug dealing acquittance's. I do not believe this girl took a ride by a truck driver. The driver might have been an accomplice. This needs a good experienced search team to find her and a PI to watch certain individuals. Find her and I'll bet the other's involved will make some moves or talk to cut a deal.

I think April's story is terrifying.

Chuck seems very suspicious to me too, Kermie. Without a doubt, someone knows what happened to April, and where to find her.

I was reading over at BFN yesterday, saw a post you had made and clicked on the link to the story about your daughter and it kept me reading your posts for hours. What a heart wrenching story and yet I was so captured too by your Faith and determination and strength. What a phenomenal mother you are and what a testament to your beautiful daughter and the very special love you have for one another!!

Came here to check on my Monkeys and saw your story again here. It was much easier to fill in the details here because it is just so much more compacted. Thank you so much for sharing you story with us, and for sharing you Faith with us!! You and your daughter and grandbabies are in our prayers!!

I am so sorry you are going through this.  I hope you get answers that you so rightly deserve. 

The picture you posted of finding your daughter's clothes.....It looks like this was a small space she was kept in for a period of time.  The way it was laid out  just struck me as she was held captive there.  Please, I mean no offense to you, it was only an initial thought when I looked at the pictures.

A mother's anguish knows no end when a daughter is missing.  Gloria Denton's beloved daughter, April Beth Pitzer went missing on June 28, 2004.  Three long years later, she remains missing.  April was last seen in the vicinity of the 30000 block of Caspian Way in Newberry Springs, CA. She indicated she was going to travel to Arkansas to see her mother but never arrived.   Where is April Beth Pitzer?
 
"We intend to find out," says Gloria Denton, April's mother.  "I need to find her.  I need to be able to give her a Christian burial.  I need to know where my April is," she says.
 
On November 2-4, 2007, a large-scale search for April Beth Pitzer's remains will be conducted near Elephant Mountain off of 1-15 outside of Barstow, California. 
 
The November search, hosted by the Kristen Foundation ( www.kristenfoundation.org) out of North Carolina, is bringing together people and organizations with the same mission:  to find April Beth Pitzer.
 
"It's heart wrenching," explains Gloria Denton, Apri's mother, " that thousands of our adult daughters and sons being abducted, murdered and thrown out like trash.  This problem has always existed but until organizations such as Let's Bring Them Home, the Kristen Foundation, Texas Equusearch, and amazing strangers such as Mike Melson and Brian Hanson made a choice to care and become involved, little was ever told of the thousands of missing adults and the pain their parents and children are living with."
 
Volunteers are needed for the search, along with lodging, meals, water, and financial support.
 
"We are also needing a 'home base' for volunteers in Newberry Springs, possibly a Church," explains LaDonna Meredith, Executive Director for the non-profit missing persons advocacy group, Let's Bring Them Home.
 
Let's Bring Them Home is based in Gloria Denton's home state of Arkansas and is currently offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of April Pitzer and the arrest and conviction of those involved in April's disappearance.
 
"April's clothing was found in the vicinity of where the November search is going to be conducted, so it is imperative that we utilize every volunteer we can that weekend.  It's time to bring April home," says Meredith.

Peaches I don't think I ever responded - I have spoken to Kelly @ Project Jason in Clinton's case.  I am not sure if Gloria has in Aprils case...my guess is that she has because she knows everyone.

Yes the search for April is scheduled for November 2-4.  I am attaching a poster that Angela on BFN created to help get volunteers for the search.....Everyone say your prayers that Gloria will get some answers as to what happened to April.  It has been almost 3 1/2 years since her disappearance and it is time for her family to get some answers and some peace!

Woman seeks daughter's fate

BARSTOW - Gloria Denton has had plenty of time to accept that she may never see her daughter again.
Three years of searches through rugged terrain and hazardous mine shafts have yielded few clues to where 30- year-old April Beth Pitzer might have gone.

To Denton, it's no longer a rescue mission, but that hasn't affected her drive to find her daughter's remains.

Today and Sunday, a group of about 100 volunteers from private organizations, including spelunkers and paramedics, plan to gather for another search in the desert. This time, Denton contends they'll be successful, either through the search itself or the right tip.

"There's no doubt in my mind that people here know exactly where April is. I can take her home this weekend if one of the many who know would come forward. It's as simple as that," she said.

Pitzer, who was having medical problems and newly divorced, came with some friends to Newberry Springs in 2004. Denton said she believes Pitzer was wrongly diagnosed with bipolar disorder and given medications for it, but she was actually suffering from postpartum depression.

Six months later, her friends abandoned her in Newberry Springs. She called her mother, saying she was going to take a bus back to Arkansas, but she hasn't been heard from since.

After many public pleas for help, Denton connected with the Kristen Foundation, a North Dakota organization dedicated to the search for missing adults. The group is sponsoring the search this weekend.

Pitzer's two daughters, who are 6 and 8 years old, have also come to realize they likely won't see their mother alive again. But the young children, who don't fully understand death, believe their mother is physically intact and not skeletal remains.

Denton, a Clarksville, Ark., resident, has her hopes high that searchers will find her daughter's remains, but great challenges lie ahead.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has conducted four organized searches for the woman. Detective Steve Pennington, who retained the missing persons' case even though he has since been transferred to the department's homicide unit, said he has spent about six months of his own time trying to find her.

"There's literally thousands of mines in San Bernardino County and we have no idea which one she was dumped in," he said.

Pennington believes the woman was murdered, even though she's still classified as a missing person.

A mine owner in the desert discovered some of Pitzer's clothing while giving a tour of the mine. He also discovered blood and other bodily fluids on a sheet and mattress in the mine shaft. Then deputies discovered someone had scrawled a cryptic message on a truck stop bathroom wall in Oregon:

"Want to find a missing girl from Arkansas? I-15, 3 miles east of Barstow."

Denton said the handwriting and the bathroom tile are being examined by sheriff's officials. So far, nothing has led investigators to Pitzer or an arrest.

A $50,000 reward has been offered by Let's Bring Them Home, an Arkansas-based missing persons organization, for information leading to Pitzer's recovery and the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for her disappearance. Those with information are asked to call the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department at (760) 256-4838. Callers may remain anonymous at WeTip, (800) 78-CRIME.

I HAVE SOME BITTERSWEET NEWS. I JUST GOT A PHONE CALL FROM GLORIA AND ONE OF THE TEAMS LED BY ROSE HAVE DISCOVERED THE HUMAN REMAINS OF A FOOT BONE AND ANOTHER BONE. THESE WERE FOUND  WHERE THE MESSAGE ON THE BATHROOM WALL SAID TO LOOK FOR HER REMAINS. THIS TIME THEY LOOKED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD. PLEASE PRAY FOR HER , SHE HAD APPROX. A 30 MINUTE DRIVE TO GET THERE FROM WHERE SHE WAS SEARCHING. SHE SHOULD BE GETTING THERE IN ABOUT 5 TO 10 MORE MINUTES.

  Morning everybody,
    it has been a long while since I posted. WOW!!! I have alot of reading to do. I want to thank carolyn, *******, and alabamamom for keeping everybody here updated for April..wow...I had no idea so many people had replied to this thread. God bless each and everyone of you.

I must add, I am in a great deal of pain. I have lived with three ruptured disc and four herrinated ones for years. Well I fell Thanksgiving day and it is obvious that the bone fragments from the L5 and L6 are against the sciatic nerve..I can only sit awhile, needless to say I am really pushing it as I type here..I have been sitting about an hour and I shouldn't be. I so......hope I can get myself up from here...last night my husband had to lift me up after I t-t'ed....sorry..just want you to understand the severity of my pain and the injury..Last time this happened I spent 16 weeks flat on my back..I had to be turned over in the bed by others, literally carried to the bath...and dressed (clean jammie's) by my niece who moved in to take care of me....boy I need her now..

I thank all of you here for your prayers and support. I will start reading and answering questions a little later on. I am sinking..I gotta get up from here...Please all accept my apologies for not answering your post sooner...

 I cannot believe it is Christmas.This will make the 3rd year I haven't put up a tree..this used to be our favorite time of the year..April had so much fun wrapping all my gifts while I baked her goodies and cooked. We loved to shop.She was always still like a little girl when we would go shopping. Same big smile,excitement..I sure miss that.
I had a talk with her new Detective. He seems like he will be committed to April also. Though I don't think I will ever find anyone as committed as Det. Pennington. I am certainly going to miss him. But we will remain in touch with eachother.

We are in the final stretch now and the pressure mounts. Saturday I am going to meet with two awesome dudes, Brian and Tim, that I met at the last search for April in November. Together we will brainstorm the final preparations for the big weekend.

Everything is coming together nicely. Today I got confirmation that RKI Instruments will loan us two of their portable gas detection units so that we can ensure the air quality of the mines is safe for our volunteers. I also found out that the t-shirts are ready for pick-up so I will pick those up tomorrow. Donations are coming in from this forum and other places, and Gloria, the victims’ mother, assures me that we will meet our needs.

My only concern at this point is the transportation issue. I have yet to hear back from the Public Affairs office at MCLB Barstow as to whether or not they will supply us with trucks and busses to move the estimated 250+ volunteers I expect to show up. So, I contacted the Governors office and asked if they can gently persuade the Marines to support our cause. Next week I am going to kamakazi call every government office and military installation in the state until someone steps up. Wish me luck! This is a big part of the plan that needs to happen to make everything else run smooth.

UPDATE 050908:
The excavation of the primary search site did not yield any remains. The site, which has been suspect for years, has been cleared thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and is no longer a nagging unanswered question. On day two searchers scoured an open area of desert where partial human remains were found a year ago. No further remains were found.

Gloria took time to meet with two persons thought to be involved in April's disappearance and cleared them. One passed a lie detector test and the other has agreed to the test. New information has now surfaced and the search will be taking a new direction in the weeks to come

I have been contacted by Gloria.

Gloria had a witness come forward.. That witness spoke to police and Gloria made sure "With a little Prodding " that the police went out to a location and searched..
In doing so..
All Hell broke lose ..  ::MonkeyEek:: A suspect was chased and suspect injured and a police officer was injured.

Gloria needs to fill in the details..
But the Police are going back out to the site looking around for evidence in the disappearance of April Beth Pitzer.

Apparently an officer was stabbed while serving a search warrant at a Ranch in the Barstow area desert and now there is a Arrest warrant out for the attacker 
"Attempted murder of a peace officer"
Which has lead police to the state of Arizona looking for the bad guy..s..

The "Ranch" which was the spot in which the officer was attacked 
Has had a special task force assigned looking around the property for evidence. As well as a property located in Arizona.
It may take some time before anyone knows if anything is found relative to April Beth Pitzer.

Mother, daughter of missing women to search the desert

BARSTOW - The mother of one missing woman and the daughter of another will join forces this upcoming weekend to search for traces of their family members.

For the eighth time since 30-year-old mother of two April Beth Pitzer went missing in June of 2004, her mother, Gloria Denton, will travel to the Barstow area from Arkansas to join searchers May 9 and 10 in looking for her daughter’s body or any evidence that might explain what happened to her.

Stephanie Thompson, whose mother, Catherine “Cathy” Lique, disappeared from Barstow in November 2003 at age 44, joined in the search for Pitzer last year, hoping at the same time to find some trace of her mother. This year is the first time that the search will officially be for both women.

Thompson said Friday she and Denton found out just recently that Lique and Pitzer had met before, at the home of a woman in Yermo with whom Lique was staying for a while, and who also knew Pitzer’s boyfriend at the time.

Denton said Pitzer went to Newberry Springs in 2003 on what was intended to be a short trip after her marriage fell apart. Instead, she ended up stranded there, homeless and associated with unsavory people, Denton said. However, before Pitzer disappeared, Denton said she was planning to come home to start fresh with her estranged husband and two daughters, then three and five years old.

Lique was a truck stop prostitute who drifted around Barstow, Thompson said. Although Thompson had moved to Oregon with her father after her parents divorced, she tried to keep track of her mother. When her brother told her that no one had heard from Lique in a while, and then no one reported seeing her for another week, Thompson filed a missing person’s report.

Lique’s boyfriend at the time said she had left one morning with nothing but a red San Francisco 49ers jacket and never showed back up, Thompson said. Authorities may have initially assumed that Lique had just skipped town, she said.

“My mom wasn’t some pretty young girl who just crazily went missing,” she said.

When: Saturday May 9, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday May 10, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Meet both days at The Barn in Newberry Springs, 44560 National Trails Highway. Search will cover area around Interstate 15 and around a mine in Ludlow where some of Pitzer’s clothes were found in December 2005.
Bring: snacks/lunch, water (organizers will provide water as well), large stick in case of encountering snakes
Off-road vehicles are also needed for the search
Burgers and hot dogs to be provided after the search Saturday

Still, Thompson said her mother would have eventually contacted the family if she had been able to, especially when Lique’s own mother died.

Thompson got in touch with Denton about a year and a half ago, after hearing a rumor that Lique had been killed and her body dumped in Newberry Springs, which led her to wonder if the case was connected to Pitzer’s disappearance. The two women have stayed in contact ever since.

“I get very discouraged a lot, and having Gloria on my side, she has definitely been a godsend,” Thompson said.

Barstow police never named a suspect in Lique’s disappearance. Pitzer’s case has also stalled, Det. Steve Pennington with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department homicide unit said. Some of Pitzer’s clothing was found in a mine shaft in Ludlow in December 2005. A message on the wall of a truck stop in Oregon discovered in September 2004 read, “Want to find missing girl from Arkansas? I-15 3 miles east of Barstow.”

However, the leads came to dead ends.

“There’s people out there that have information, but they’re just not coming forward,” Pennington said.

 It has been relayed to me that a "Minister" has come forth and stated a woman came to him crying..he asked her how he could help her and what was wrong....She said to him, "My friend..my good friend was murdered".  This minister asked her if she would tell him who her friend was...it is said that this woman replied.."April..April Pitzer" the missing woman that everybody has been looking for"!!

The minister said that this woman was at the location where April and when April was murdered...She claims April was brutally murdered and then put in a burning barrel and sat on fire...afterwards the barrel was cast down a mineshaft..she says she knows "WHERE".  The Minister has spoken to the detective...the woman will be speaking to him later.
 
Now...how do I feel??? How am I suppose to feel? I have heard so many, many things..Could this be the real deal? Supposedly April was sat on fire after the man seen her feet sticking out of the barrel.....his life has been threatened we believe. he told two other people he found April in the barrel. Now this woman says he was there and he found her body and that is why she was sat on fire??? Could this be the truth? could it be a partial truth?  It is these stories I am told and repeat to those of you who care...  If this was your child, would you follow through with such information or just blow it off?

This is my note to Gloria..
.. It is reasonable to assume this info is creditable..
First the woman claims the murder happened at a ranch which detectives have already visited. "Suspect"
The feet sticking out of a barrel is also a claim of yet another witness, which brought detectives to said ranch in the first place.
The only part that does not fit is the Mine Shaft as this woman claims the body was put into the barrel and it was set on fire and THEN the barrel was put inside the mine shaft.. How could the other witness SEE feet sticking out of a barrel if that barrel was deep into a mineshaft..

But in the very beginning OTHER witness stated the body was in a mineshaft.. This is why mine shafts were being searched in the first place.

So anyways, like with all cases information comes in and it all has to be checked out..
There is always confusing information in ALL cases.. There always is..
That is the buisness of detectives and attorneys, to sort through it all.

Even though nothing may have been found, to me it rules out some areas.  I hope something will come  from the new leads.

A few years ago I noticed Gloria searching for her Daughter April Beth Pitzer.
She is an outstanding person. Gloria has taught me what unconditional Love is.
I have seen very few families go to the extremes to find answers when a loved one goes missing.
Gloria, who is alone in her search, is like a one woman army. She is bullet proof and she demands an proper answer.
April was living in Hell before she went missing and Gloria has boldly gone to Hell to find April ..
Without fear, Gloria continues on her Journey and I think Satin fears her, because he knows, Her Love for her daughter and he faith in God as well as justice for April are an inspiration to families everywhere who find themselves in a similar situation.

In 2004, an analyst from the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation detected a crime pattern: the bodies of murdered women were being dumped along the Interstate 40 corridor in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

The analyst and a police colleague from the Grapevine, Texas Police Department referred these cases to our Violent Criminal Apprehension Program, or ViCAP, where our analysts looked at other records in our database to see if there were similar patterns of highway killings elsewhere.

Turns out there were. So we launched an extensive effort to support our state and local partners with open investigations into highway murders.

Today, we’re publicly announcing our Highway Serial Killings initiative to raise awareness among law enforcement agencies and the general public about this issue and our unique assistance on these cases.

First, some background. The victims in these cases are primarily women who are living high-risk, transient lifestyles, often involving substance abuse and prostitution. They’re frequently picked up at truck stops or service stations and sexually assaulted, murdered, and dumped along a highway.

The suspects are predominantly long-haul truck drivers. But the mobile nature of the offenders, the unsafe lifestyles of the victims, the significant distances and multiple jurisdictions involved, and the scarcity of witnesses or forensic evidence can make these cases tough to solve.

Enter ViCAP, part of our National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime and a national repository for violent crimes. The database—which contains information on homicides, sexual assaults, missing persons, and unidentified human remains—is available to law enforcement throughout the country over a secure Internet link on our Law Enforcement Online (LEO).

ViCAP analysts have created a national matrix of more than 500 murder victims from along or near highways, as well as a list of some 200 potential suspects. Names of suspects—contributed by law enforcement agencies—are examined by analysts who develop timelines using a variety of reliable sources of information.

Our assistance also includes:

Sponsoring free regional training sessions on our Highway Serial Killings initiative for law enforcement agencies located near major interstates and highways;
Educating victim advocacy groups, in particular groups representing women and children; and
Using the skills of our behavioral analysis experts at the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime, who can provide investigative, interview, and prosecutive strategies; ways to link cases using behavioral characteristics; advice on working with the media; and unknown offender profiles.
ViCAP, though, is only as good as the data it contains, so we ask law enforcement agencies to make sure they submit to us their cases involving murders and other violent crimes taking place on or near highways.

Bottom line: is the Highway Serial Killings initiative solving cases? Yes, it is. So far, at least 10 suspects believed responsible for some 30 homicides have been placed in custody…including a trucker arrested in Tennessee charged with four murders and a trucker charged with one murder in Massachusetts and another in New Jersey.

But what about the case that started it all—the series of murdered women being dumped along the Interstate 40 corridor in Oklahoma and three other states? Two people who were working together have been charged with some of the murders…and the investigation to tie them to others continues.

I have just received word that the remains of Catherine “Cathy” Lique were located in Death Valley, CA in March of 2008 and were identified recently via DNA. She can now go home.......

My mom's remains have been located

Bones were found scattered in Death Valley in March of 2008 and were just positively identified as belonging to my Mom Catherine Lique. I don't have very much information right now but I wanted you guys to know. You have all been so wonderful and supportive. its not the outcome I wanted but it is definitely a relief to know something. I am still in shock right now.

Dog unearths human skull in Landers

A human skull was found in a Landers backyard Wednesday after a resident's dog dragged the bones into a backyard in the 59000 block of Mitch Lane, sheriff's detectives said.
Coroner's officials have not determined the age or gender of the victim. Detectives say the skull was in a pile of animal bones and may have been on the property for up to two years.

More than a dozen search and rescue volunteers today are scouring a 10 acre swath of desert near where the skull was found, using cadaver dogs to help hunt for other remains.

"We are trying to identify any place this may have come from," said sheriff's homicide Sgt. Doug Hubbard. "We're doing a very thorough, immediate search."

Detectives are also checking the missing persons database for a possible match.

LOS ANGELES —  Investigators in Southern California have found a second human skull in a national forest close to where hikers discovered the first on Christmas Eve.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Saturday it's unclear if there's any connection between the two skulls.

Detectives and coroner's investigators came across the second skull in Angeles National Forest Saturday morning in a search of the area where on Thursday hikers found a skull with a bullet hole in it.

Whitmore says the second skull showed signs of some form of trauma. He gave no further details.

Human remains found in desert near Needles

A passerby on Tuesday found human remains in a rural desert area west of Needles. The remains were discovered south of the 40 Freeway, north of Essex. A motorist stopped and got out of his vehicle to let his dog out of the car when he saw the bones.

Coroner's officials said the remains are that of a male, but they have not identified the victim. An autopsy is expected to be conducted this week to determine the cause of death.

Anyone with information is asked to call sheriff's Sgt. Frank Montanez at 909-387-3589 or the Coroner Division at 909-387-2978.

Skulls found in forest belonged to man, woman

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST - Investigators have determined that two human skulls found in the Angeles National Forest last month belonged to a man and woman, though little other information was known, coroner's officials said.

The man's skull was found by hikers on Dec. 24 near Angeles Forest Highway Mile Marker 19, and the woman's skull was found by investigators two days later about two miles to the south, according to Los Angeles County sheriff's and coroner's officials.

The male skull had what appeared to be a bullet hole in it when discovered, coroner's investigator Jerry McKibben said.

Both people remained listed with the coroner's office as John and Jane Doe, he added.

The remains were discovered in a portion of the forest that was scorched by the Station Fire, and coroner's officials have said they appear to have been there well before the fire broke out in August.

Thank you Edward.  I saw that when I went back to read this thread again.  I saw there had been an error in one of the posts with pics of three children, that had a notation of "Gloria's Girls" http://scaredmonkeys.net/index.php?topic=2049.msg269044#msg269044  but with a little more reading saw that only top and bottom of the three photos were April's daughters.    http://scaredmonkeys.net/index.php?topic=2049.msg269451#msg269451   I corrected the error, per Gloria's post.
Even though April has two daughters, and there were three rings, it could be that the third ring could be for the birth of another, say perhaps a nephew or even April herself.  I don't know. Gloria might know.  Also, the owner of the rings may not even have them as birth stone rings, but likes the colors.  I've seen other rings that are like that, but have a flower shape, and can be worn in multiples.  I hope whomever the rings belong to will be identified and laid to rest.  And of course, a good dose of justice for those that harmed her would be good too.   ::MonkeyAngel::

I called Gloria yesterday and she says she does have not computer access at the moment.
She will come take a look as soon as she can.
 

This was one of the best leads we had in this case.
It was found written on a bathroom wall at a truck stop in Oregon.

If her body was actually in the Los Angeles forest it would be almost 1 1/2 hours away from where searchers have looked for evidence of April Beth Pitzer.

Tons of reseach was done and many searches have been done too. Still April needs to be found.

The mysterious note on an Oregon truck stop bathroom wall.

Friends and family say that April Pitzer was looking to start a new life when she moved from Arkansas to Newberry Springs, Calif. in the summer of 2003.  In the midst of a divorce from her husband, April headed west and soon made numerous friends in her new home. 

However, a year later, April decided it was time to return to Arkansas, this time to live with her mother, Gloria Denton.  Cops say April never made it home and her whereabouts remain a mystery. 

At the time of her disappearance, April was living with a friend, Chuck Hollister.  Police learned that on April 26, 2004, Hollister agreed to drive April around town and say goodbye to friends.  The next day, Chuck and April spent the day packing her belongings, although April never spoke of how exactly she was getting back to Arkansas.  When Chuck awoke the next morning, April was still sound asleep, but when he returned later that day, she was gone. 

Police tell AMW that Chuck believed that April had either gotten a ride or was given money for a bus ticket.  Detectives even checked Hollister's residence for signs of April but came up empty-handed.  When cops began questioning April's friends, they all believed the same thing...that Pitzer had found her way back to Arkansas.

The cryptic message said "want to find missing girl from Arkansas? I-15 3 miles east of Barstow."

Questions Surround Woman's Disappearance

April's mom began to worry since Pitzer is known to suffer from bi-polar disorder.  They usually spoke every week, and it had been weeks since Denton had heard from her daughter. 

Local authorities began posting missing person fliers around town.  However, the first lead would come not locally, but from over 800 miles away.  On September 7, 2004, detectives were contacted by Deputy Daniel Carr from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in Oregon.  Carr said he had been sent to a Love's truck stop in Roseberg, Oregon to check out a suspicious message written on a bathroom wall.  The cryptic message said "want to find missing girl from Arkansas?  I-15 3 miles east of Barstow." 

Deputy Carr photographed and collected all latent prints from the bathroom stall and retrieved the truck stop's surveillance footage.  While he sent all the results to cops in California, no leads developed.  Nevertheless, deputies from Barstow, Calif. Sheriff's Station investigated the area three miles off the 15 freeway but found no sign of April. 

On September 9, 2004, detectives got another lead in the case.  An employee working for Barstow City Transportation sold a bus pass to a woman who, when seeing April's missing person poster, said "I know her, she's dead and stuffed in a hole and I know what hole she's in."

Detectives tracked down the woman who told them that she had known April for about a year.  The woman had heard rumors that April had been killed and the body was hidden out in the desert.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned that Chuck Hollister and his friends were known to hang out in a group of inactive mines in the desert area 5 miles south of Ludlow, Calif.  At that point, authorities turned their attention to the numerous gold mines, most from the late 1800's, hoping that one may provide clues as to April's  whereabouts.  It was at these mines that Mike Melson of the volunteer group Equusearch began leading multiple, thorough searches.  Currently, authorities and Melson continue to check the mines for signs of April.

Chuck Hollister died of cancer in September 2006 but authorities believe that there is someone out there who knows what happened to April Pitzer.

To the sheriff’s office, she said, April Pitzer was just one of hundreds of missing people in the county and Denton was just a voice on the telephone. “I have 307 bodies under my care now,” said Dave Van Norman, San Bernardino County supervisory deputy coroner and unidentified persons coordinator. Van Norman said the county, which covers 22, 000 square miles, most of it desert, gets about 100 unidentified deaths a year. An average of 10 to 15 of those people are never identified.

S. Calif. police trying to ID head found in desert

BARSTOW, Calif. – Police in Southern California are trying to identify a human head that was found inside a backpack in the San Bernardino County desert.

Police says a man collecting cans found the backpack last week. Inside was the head of a brown-haired woman, wrapped in plastic grocery bags with the store labels "Fiesta Foods" and "Walgreens."

Barstow police say DNA samples and X-rays have been sent to the state and investigators also are asking for the public's help.

The head was found west of a residential neighborhood not far from several truck stops.

Barstow is about 90 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

If they want help, they need to say how long they think the remains have been there, imo. Hopefully we'll know soon. I know there are hundreds, if not thousands of missing women in California, but I always think of April.

I am thinking that maybe they already have a good idea as to who this person is. I called the Barstow Police Department today and told them why I was calling and the girl said "contact your local authorities and have them contact us, thank you". She did not ask who I thought it might be or ANYTHING! I thought it was very strange to say the least. They proclaim to want help and when you call, then they react like that? I did talk to another person in San Bernardino County who told me that the head is too decomposed to determine the age. That may be why they are keeping quiet about it? Perhaps they are not sure whether or not at this point it is a minor?

Any word yet on the skull found in the back pack? Was it April?

She has arranged for a specialized search team to come to search for her daughter April Beth Pitzer.
The search is going on this month March on the 20th and 21st
They will be meeting at the restaurant named Peggy Sue's 35654 Yermo road. Barstow Ca. at 7 a.m.

The 2004 disappearance of a Newberry Springs woman will be featured on an upcoming episode of “Disappeared,” a television show on the Discovery Communication’s Investigation Discovery digital cable channel.

April Pitzer went missing in 2004 after telling her mother that she was returning to her native Arkansas. Pitzer was 30 years old at the time of her disappearance.

A crew from Discovery Communications will be filming a search of  Barstow-area mines March 18 and 19 for the second season of “Disappeared” with the Mojave Underground, a  Utah group that specializes in deep-mine searches. They will be accompanied by another ground search group, Trinity Search and Rescue.

Pitzer’s mother, Gloria Denton, said that she is glad to have the assistance of an exploration team new to the search for her missing daughter.

“(Mojave Underground) has equipment to go deep mines that isn’t around in San Bernardino,” said Denton. “They have been following the search.”

Pitzer disappeared after telling her mother that she was taking a bus to move back to Arkansas. She went to Newberry Springs on what was intended to be a short trip to distance herself from a troubled marriage but ended out homeless and broke. She told a roommate that she was taking a bus back to Arkansas but never arrived.

Numerous searches in the past have been fruitless.

Some of Pitzer’s clothing was found in a mine shaft in Ludlow in December of 2005.

A representative for Discovery said that “Disappeared” features missing-person cases, as told through interviews with the missing person’s friends, family, and investigators. Episodes feature the missing person’s story from a few days before their disappearance to present-day investigations.

Denton said that she first heard of the show when she was watching television, and later worked with the Center for Missing Adults to contact the producers of the program. 

Representatives for Discovery Communications say that “Disappeared” episode featuring Pitzer will air either later this year or early next year. Investigation Discovery is available to Barstow Time-Warner Cable customers who subscribe to the variety pack package on channel 112.

I would like to list a couple of links and make a couple of statements about this case..

 Years ago most of us came together on the internet to look for a missing young lady named Natalee Holloway on the island of Aruba. Although I had commented on missing persons cases and other kinds of news at Scared Monkeys original web site and other web sites too, I had done one search for a missing person in years prior.. a young girl in my community who was found in a field after being murdered. I did not walk up on her remains, others did and thank god for that as if I had I do believe I would have had a heart attack at such a sight.
It was truly disturbing..
 Years later I did do another search along with Trinity Search and Rescue for missing person Nita Mayo in the Sierra mountains near Yosemite. Mike Melson who leads that team is a great man who does these searches out of the goodness of his own heart along with his wife and other team members. They are a highly qualified search and rescue team.
 I have been speaking with and doing research for Gloria Denton for a few years now, who I would say has become a voice and a powerful advocate for finding the missing because of her own daughters fate. I support her in her efforts to find April Beth Pitzer and you will see her speak in many news articles and supporting other families of missing loved ones..
 One of the saddest photos I have ever seen is Gloria Denton standing over her daughters clothing found while on a search. She is strong and Will Not be stopped in finding April Beth and if you can donate even 5 dollars towards this effort it would be appreciated and well spent. Gloria does not waste a dime and she is not a rich woman.
I applaud the efforts made by Gloria and all of YOU who have supported her efforts.
I know members of Blogs for Natalee have been a huge support effort for Gloria in the past and I have so much respect for them for doing so.
There have been good days and bad days in Gloria's life in this search for her beautiful daughter and her support and caring for other families of victims does not go beyond my eyes.

Human Bones have been found by San Berndino county detectives in an area which they were informed to go investigate on Wednesday relative to where April Beth Pitzer could be found .
 
DNA evidence will have to be performed to identify bones.. 

Gloria is at the scene and detectives have quarantined the area.. detectives have stayed silent about this find until now.. It was not part of the search area being organized this week end for volunteers.

She said the bones found are not a skeleton ..some bones that were in plain sight  " like laid out " to be found.

i think at least 12 bodies/bones have been found in the last year.. none of them april beth pitzer..

Lots of people do not realize how many abandoned mine shafts are in this desert.. many times people riding motorcycles and 4 wheelers have fallen into these open holes and some of them are as much as 300 feet straight down !!

Here is a close up of us working with our drop-down camera to clear another mine. We were able to get past two cave-ins and into a "room" about 75' down. There appeared to be a table with a bottle on it (shown in the video below). However, we weren't able to get a good look and it was too dangerous for personnel to go down inside.

An important note from Gloria via email::

"The ones who found the bones..."
did not know about the tip" nor did the person who was told the tip knew bones had been found until later...
  The detectives had not yet released or shared any info, nor had set a time to go there...it was still, even to me "just another theory/story" So in actuality...the Det. did not, have first hand envolvement of the bones being found. I don't want him to get in any trouble by any means. Please post this for me.
  There is " nothing, that says these are April's remains". It may just be simply a coincidence. There has not been a skull or pelvis located. The humorus is somewhat big, now at this time it is being called possible male..There will have to be DNA done to first determine the sex of the bones. If this is inconclusive then another DNA test for microcondinal DNA that only April and I share.
   If that test says it's April, well, I don't know what to say, except praise God!! Myself and another lady also found what appears to be skull, toe bone and piece of a kneecap/knee. It has been send to the forensic anthropology dept to do a determination. These were found in a pack/rat nest, and wash basin near Chuck Hollisters home. All I am thinking is that " what if "I" found pieces of my April...I am aloss for words..

 But each and every time she does go, a little more progress is made and I hope that one day April is found and returned home so her little girls can go visit her in her place of rest in Arkansas.

The bones found by others are still out for testing.

MOJAVE DESERT -- Human remains were found Saturday in the Mojave Desert, according to San Bernardino County coroner's officials.
The bones were discovered west of the 15 Freeway in the desert.

Coroner's officials will examine the remains to determine the identity and cause of death.

Pictures and Memories of Missing Woman Stolen from Mailbox

April Pitzer went missing six years ago. She was on her way back to Johnson County from California. Her case has been declared a homicide, but her body has never been found. Recently a national network requested April's pictures and documents so they could air a show about her disappearance. Those items never made it back to April's mother.

These pictures are all that Gloria Denton has left of her missing daughter. The rest were in a box that has now gone missing. The pictures were being shipped back to Denton via FedEx. But the package never made it home.

"All the baby pictures, all the letters and cards she had sent me. The pictures she had drawn me over the years. They were all in that box," said Denton.

Denton has searched the area for the box, but has found nothing.

Denton got the run-around when she called FedEx to try and find out what happened to her package. First they told her that the driver had left it on her porch. When she told them it wasn't there, they told her it was taped to the mailbox. Denton called the sheriff, who told her someone probably stole the package and discarded it when they saw what was inside.

Denton says she's not interested in pressing charges; she just wants those memories back.

"Somebody took it and they can make it right by just giving it back or telling me where they threw it so I can go get it," she said.

Denton says the FedEx driver admitted he used poor judgment. When she asked why the driver didn't call her, they said he didn't have a cell phone.

FedEx told 5News they don't have a written policy about taping packages to mailboxes, but that they hadn't heard of it being a common practice. Another FedEx employee told Denton that people are usually thrilled when they leave their packages at the mailbox.

"You just don't tape things to a mailbox. You don't know what's inside. There could have been a million dollars in them, but there wasn't," said Denton. "I don't have my daughter anymore. The last card she sent me and the last letter she sent me were in that box. She can't send any more."

Denton is headed to California on Tuesday because police received a tip from a woman who says she knows where April is buried. This will be Denton 13th trip.

This is just awful.   ::MonkeyNoNo::  I've had some bad luck with FedEx myself at times.  Once, they left a rifle stock I had ordered for my son outside of the apartment office, which was on a busy road, AFTER HOURS.  Just leaning there against the door.  Obviously FedEX came after the office was closed so they just left it.  And the ONLY reason he found it was the mailboxes were right next to the office and my son had gone by to check his mail.  Saw the package and realized what it was, went and looked and it was addressed to him.  Anyone could have picked the package up. FedEx could have held the package until the next day, left a notice, called my son (his ph. number was on ticket) anything but leaving it there.  When I called FedEx to complain, they said it was a "contractor" that did it.  I don't care.  It was FedEx's responsibility, period.  Another time I sent a flat with a photo in it, and it made it part way there (from tracking) and then got "lost".  Never found, never recovered.  They offered to refund the cost of shipping.  So much for tracking...  Fortunately, I had scanned the photo and had a copy.  I'm really sorry April's pics and docs are missing and I hope they are recovered.  I fear someone may have grabbed the package, saw it was what it was, pics and docs and not something they could sell, and ditched the items.   ::MonkeyNoNo::  I used to think when I sent something FedEx or UPS etc., with tracking my stuff was safe.  Well, it may be somewhat safer, with the tracking more than the USPS, but it is not infallible.  I'm hoping April's pics and docs are recovered.

Thank you for the update, Nut. I hope Mr. Guy's family and friends can lay him to rest and begin the long healing process now that his remains have been recovered after over 4 years.  Maybe with the help of forensics they can figure out what happened to their loved one and if he died other than a natural death, there's still a chance for justice. 

I sincerely hope April can be found. The not knowing would be terrible imo.  Prayers for April and her family and for Mr. Guy and his family.   ::MonkeyAngel::

LUDLOW • A human femur has been found near Ludlow.

Cpl. Kelly Craig of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said a railroad employee found the bone Thursday morning near National Trials Highway and contacted authorities. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies dispatched to the scene Friday morning conducted a search of the area and did not find any other remains.

The bone will be sent to the sheriff’s crime lab for DNA analysis. Craig said it appeared the bone had been outside for some time.

On September 2, 2012, at approximately 6:50 p.m., Deputies from Barstow Station responded to the 49000 block of Silver Valley Rd, Newberry Springs, following a report of human remains being located. The reporting party found a human left foot with leg bones attached on her front porch. Her dog had been running outside her fence line and the dog carried the bones back from an unknown location in the desert. The reporting party called 911 and reported what her dog had found.

Detectives from Sheriff’s Homicide and the Coroner’s Division responded to the location to conduct the investigation. A search of the desert was conducted by investigators and additional human remains were located. The investigation is ongoing; the cause of death is unknown along with the race and sex of the remains.

Anyone with any information regarding this investigation is urged to call Detective Randy German or Sergeant Brad Toms at (909) 387-3598 at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Detail. Callers wishing to remain anonymous may contact the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463).

Hikers found human skeletal remains in an area northeast of Barstow on Monday.
San Bernardino County coroner's officials said two hikers were in the open desert about 2:30 p.m. when they found the bones.

Bagdad Chase, Inc. plans to reopen the Bagdad Chase mine, said George Rodda, who serves on the board of directors for the company. The company is working to perform additional tests before reopening, Rodda said.

Rodda said nearby Cestle Mountain Mine had yielded about $2 billion in gold and silver, in today’s dollars, over the past 100 years and the company hoped to eventually extract similar amounts of gold from the Bagdad Chase mine.

Workers must complete experimental drilling and magnetic testing in the mine to evaluate the effects of a 1999 earthquake on the facility, Rodda said. Some of the ore could have shifted its position as a result of the quake, he said. Rodda said a team of biologists were also working to complete environmental studies.

Since 2004, the mine has played a role in a missing person case that received national attention. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies searched the area for 30-year-old April Pitzer, of Newberry Springs, who went missing in 2004 after moving to the area from Arkansas.

“There’s a lot of evidence that shows she was murdered on the mine,” Rodda said.

Deputies recovered clothing that could have belonged to Pitzer in an area mine in 2005, but never located her body.

A piece of graffiti scrawled on the wall of a truck stop restroom in Roseburg, Ore. said “want to find missing girl from Arkansas? I-15 3 miles east of Barstow,” but investigators found no signs of Pitzer at that location either.

Authorities believed that some of Pitzer’s friends would hang out around abandoned mines in the area.

It's a story that made national headlines for years. April Beth Pitzer disappeared on June 28, 2004. She was last seen alive in California. She has since been declared legally dead, but her body has never been found.

On Saturday, family members and friends shared their favorite stories of the short time they had with her. But between the innocent memories, was a dark side of Pitzer's life. Jail time and drug use plagued her for a period of time before she disappeared at the age of 30.

Pitzer's daughters Kennedy and Bradley were only three and five when they lost their mother. Pitzer's mother, Gloria Denton, said she'll never stop trying to wring good out of her tragedy.

"Out in San Bernardino County, she was the most investigated case they've ever had. They didn't have a cold case unit; now they have a cold case unit," Denton said.

Denton visits California at least once a year. She doesn't believe her daughter is still alive, but she won't stop searching until she's found her remains.
