I wish I could crochet.   Who taught you to do it?    Any books are video's you can recommend?     I made an afgan once - but that was a long time ago and it was a simple stitch.   

crazy how I think I predict trends..I am sure I predicted shabby chic and a host of others in the past.
I wanted to start sewing on my machine again, and low and behold project runway became a tv hit!
I decided with my new found intrest in sewing , that I would sew something easy that did not require a "good fit' and found vintage apron patterns that I thought would be fun.
Now on every tv show from desperate housewives to dexter, they are all wearing aprons!
Now if I could only figure out those lottery #'s!

  I go to u tube for everything, and ivillage has videos, everytime i have to sew in a zipper i pull up the video to "refresh' my memory.  I made dish cloths cuz i suck too bad to attempt an afgan, It is just a dish cloth but who cares, cuz it is pretty when it sits on the counter all wet and used.

Thanks!   I never thought of going to utube to find out how to crochet.    I'll try both those sites.   I like doilies and such.   I'd like to make my own!    I'd like to learn to make baby blankets, too.    ::DancingSantaMonkey1::

I always got out voted one the pink tree. Do any of you remember those colored wheels the turned, you would plug it in and it would shine on your tree. Blue, red, green and yellow I think. This room prior to the photo was " 1924 dirt floor with Cinder block Cement walls " that was filled with MOLD and Disgusting everything you can imagine. I have gotten this Far and find it quite to be Almost Perfect...
I have been doing this for over a year and gotten this Far - this is my First " Fall/Christmas in my Living Basement" ...  that's my Daddy Cat " Timmy" he was helping me take pics .. I ran out of nails or the other pic would be hung ...

I had to take my mama's aluminum tree away from her. She put it up for years, and it was pathetic. My kids would bite their lips to keep from laughing, and I was afraid she was going to electrocute herself with that old color wheel light. Thank You CBB .. this house is to be the death of me. Everyone Wishes and Dreams of having an old house to " refurbish" and bring up to par ........ Hhah hah hah hah .. I say Think First .. think hard. Its not all that by any means .. its almost brain surgery. You have to consider the era of the house ( with its internal issues $$$ unfounded until you start ripping it apart) and attempt to  make it your own personal space at the same time.  Without losing the Craft of the house itself.  Its so hard.  So hard.

As to my 1st Thanksgiving in my new home...my kiddos helped with stuffing, and all side dishes. It was a breeze preparing. It still took me 2 days to clean it all up. (they all scattered afterwards...gotta love it!)

Our weather this week was fabulous. Daughter and her friend were here from Nebraska! I was so happy we had sunshine and warmth for their vacation  ::MonkeyCool::

Yes, they had a swim every morning and the spa to end the night. I have not been in the pool yet! Too cold for my bones.

Daughter brought her dog. We had 5 dogs running around, drooling for tidbits of food.

Would it be really wrong to steal an angel?  Something about that sounds pretty ominous to me!

Nope Green Eyes I have not due to .. The rug simply does not make the room itself. Its now stationary to keep the plank floor underneath.  And just " yesterday" Deenie ate another hole in it.

I found this rug online (about a week ago) and I am so unsure. I want to buy it. Its a fair price. I am in quandary.

This is what happens when you create a room such as a kitchen/dining area so " unusual in color scheme) Nothing matches that is sold in stores ... arrrrh. Maybe GreenEyes you can look at this rug and tell me what you think of it.  My floors are Wenge. Almost black planks - with a root beer grain - No true brown. Its a cola brown/root beer grain. berry tones within the plank floor.

I have to share a funny Thanksgiving Story (( related to Doggy's))

My Mother lives in Condo's that ever other one is exactly alike in exterior not color scheme. She lives in the middle of nowhere off a long country road.

was Weds night she heard "scratching at her front door" so she opened the door to find this Lost Dog .. who was defiant " let me in"..  so she let him in. or Her. A small old dog, very sweet an loving. The dog went through the lower level walked around, went into her kitchen, sniffed her cats.. and ate the cats food. Said I want to leave now. Went to the front door as I am ready to go. .. My Mom was like  ::MonkeyEek:: What do I do. The Dog really wanted out and to leave.

The dog had no collar was not underfed nor appeared in ill health - so she let him/her out.
Next Night Thurs Same thing

A Dog comes to her Door was scratching - I want in - Was not the Same Dog. Yet was an Old Dog very Sweet and Nice. Came in did the once around. Met the cats and ate their food and wanted out.  Well this dog had a Collar on and had a phone number. My Mom called the Number and it was a cell phone. It rang to the neighbor 2 doors down - Who had OUT of Town guests staying ( that had 3 old dogs with Her) she had let them out .. and allowed them to wander * shame on her. 

All the Dogs found their way back and are Safe.
But My Mother was thinking  - UM What am I the Doggy Howard Johnson's ??

I like all the colors in the rug. You shold be able to come up with one of them in a lighter shade to repaint your kitchen when you get around to it. With your black floor in the kitchen and dark wood in the rest I can see where the red color would feel so dark.  ::ElfMonkey::

They are truly a 180 pound lap dog. They don't want to just be with you, they want to be ON you!  Bubba's my son's dog, but he takes him everywhere, including work and my house for Thanksgiving! Bubba's almost as tall as I am when he's got his front paws on the kitchen counters trying to eat the turkey that just came out of the oven. If that sounds like the voice of experience, it's because it is.   :roll:

Deenie, if you were to repaint the kitchen, you might be inclined to buy a totally different rug. I personally like the rag rug, but is it going along with the rest of the place? I really like that artwork, did you do it?

Yes, Deenie. I do. I think you can use it even if you change colors. From the picture, it looks like some texture would work well in the room, too, and that rug is full of it. Don't expect it to "lighten" up the room much, because the colors aren't light in it, but it will match for now, and look good when you choose a lighter paint. 

Shell has a point, Deenie. Have you thought about what color to paint?

I really don't know if I would go. The doctors might have been trained in the States and Australia but what about all the support staff. I do have friends that went to Europe to get treatment for wives Hopkins Disease that they couldn't get here. She came back cured and able to function normal and not on meds. They travel the world together all she uses is a cane.

Now we are out sourcing our medical care. How sad is that. But if I needed surgery with no insurance I might think about it. I really can't say yes or no.

Interesting, SuzieQ. I have seriously considered scouting some property near the US border in Mexico to set up a short stay surgical clinic. Just like Canadians come to the US to receive needed procedures that they have to wait for in Canada, the general thinking within the medical community is that the same scenario will exist here very soon. Cash and carry without government regulation would seem like a dream come true on the business side of things and I could offer services within my own clinic for 1/2 the cost now if it weren't for them. I just like where I live and don't really relish the prospect of moving to the necessary area. There's a physician coalition forming locally to do just that and take rotations. Ideally, you could do the same thing within the US, but the healthcare bill, in current form, would prohibit it.

Have you read the new book on it - Foriegin Body by Robin Cook? Pretty scary stuff - mostly because I could see it happening. It is about American patients being killed in India when they go over there for inexpensive surgery.

CBB - That is such a good idea - I am pretty sure the healthcare bill will prohibit paying cash for treatment here so just over the border would be a good place. Sad that the government will be deciding what a group of free people can and can not do for themselves.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I don't know what I would do in that situation.
 I have friends from England. Well she is from England, Bill married her while in the Air Force stationed in England. To make a long story short, they flew back to England when Bill needed surgery.
Have younger friends from Nepal that came to the states because their son was born with a heart defect. I will have to ask them why they made the choice of the US over some other country.

I am always here with you, just been in the upper branches.  I had to post to show off Brandi's brilliant work.  Casper looks too cute not to share with you all.  I loved hearing about all of your Thanksgiving's, ours was spent with my son-in-law's family.  Our three grandchildren are so lucky to have both set of grandparents in the same town.  We had a wonderful meal and I held and smooched the new baby, she has such a sweet smile and coos almost constantly.  I don't post pictures of my family other than Casper but imagine the prettiest little blonde haired, baby with huge blue eyes and you will see my McKaylee Belle.  Rylan has turned five and Rosie will be 3 in December, the love they have for each other is amazing to watch. If you hand them anything, they immediately tell you they need one for the other.  Casper has already found some of his presents, lol and they had to be moved out of the house.  He knows exactly what Christmas means and if we say Merry Christmas he looks up to his stocking.  I love all of you guys and am so glad to be a part of this forum.  I came here for Caylee, such a sad reason to become part of a forum but I ended up finding a place of such love and warmth, I can't even put it into words.  You guys have become my second family, I wish I could become more comfortable with posting but I truly think my anxiety in life extends to my anxiety over posting.  Just know that even if I am not posting, I am with you in my heart and praying for all of you and for justice.

What a Great Post " Magic"

I have to make a comment about the name Rosie. First to tell you,  I knew when I was very little that I was not a girly girl. That I was not really defined Tom boy, but I knew I was not a girly girl. Meaning I didn't enjoy wearing frilly things, I hated PINK .. I rather liked spring green or orange :) ... I did love to wear skirts as long as I had on my granny boots and a turtleneck, NO dresses. Why I don't know.  So one year at Christmas I was given this BIG Box from Santa. I was more excited about the wrapped package than the contents. Because it was so Big. It could have been anything inside. But it was SO Big and Beautifully wrapped. I was always slow to get into Christmas morning. My Brother who is a year older than I ..was up at 5 am ready and ripping .. Me I was the opposite. This huge box was before me and I was all about 4 yrs old.  I opened it and to my utter shock .. It was a DOLL gasp.  A Baby Doll. A Doll with dark hair, fair skin, blue eyes with very dark eyelashes. Her eyes Blinked. She wore a blue and white gingham check dress with a white collar.. She had little embroidered roses on her collar shades of rose and pink. Oh Ms Magic ... I was so disappointed.  I didn't remove her from the box. I just stared at her. I did not open another present, I cried and I went to my room and wanted to be alone. HMMPH so much for that I guess I thought. I didn't have any special anything picked out, or anything Wanted ... nor had any expectations that Christmas. But I surely did NOT want a Baby Doll. I was so so upset. (( I do remember all of it)) I do not understand my reaction to the doll today. But I do recall that Christmas. I finally allowed this " Doll" into my bedroom. I got to the point staring at her, sigh I would at least give her a name.. My Mother had put her in my room. I picked her up and She Spoke to me. When you dipped her over she would say " Mommmeee" .. she had a voice box inside her.  That totally flipped me out.  I had the Chrissie Doll that you put push the button in her back and her Auburn hair would grow .. I had the Doll that you could pull the string in her back and her BIG Jumbo Eyes would change color.. But I never had a Baby Doll that talked.
I named her Rosie. And after I claimed her and gave her a name. Rosie was with me every where I went. I loved her so much that you would have to pry her out of my arms. I never allowed her to get dirty. I kept her hair as perfect as I could. And I remember her to this day. She was a Madame Alexander Baby Doll. That my Grandmother picked out for me and had my Aunt who lived in New York find ..so I could have it for Christmas.  I never knew any of that until years later.  I do not know what happened to Rosie. I moved too many times in my childhood. I know one year at one home we had a huge flood and we lost some very precious things .. I have to say to you Magic, to hear you have a grand~baby named Rosie just hit me. I have not thought of her in a long time.  I really miss her.  She was the perfect gift.

Woke up with a cold this morning.  I had a feeling last night when I had the sniffles & hoped it was just from cleaning....guess I caught it over the holiday.   Hope I can get rid of it as quickly as it snuck up on me.   

Sorry you feel bad 2NJ.   We've always found Vicks Vaporub works great, my mom always kept jars of it.    Rub into the underside of wrists & under nose for a sore throat or head congestion.  Rub into your chest & on bottom of feet covered with socks for chest congestion.   Plus keep a vaporizer going if you have heat on & it's drying out the air in your home.

Miss Bearly .. You slay me. Um me Thanksgiving was um quite the Morning/Day. It was me the fur kids and stomach flu.. YAY .. I thankfully was not responsible for " Cooking a thing" nor taking anything to anyone.  I never showered, My hair was all over the place, I Never got dressed was wearing what I slept in t-shirt, and pj pants to my knees ( they are cute navy blue stars and moons and a ruffle at the knee ) Found my place to be in the BAFH ROOM most of the day. My guts were Screaming past the point of no return... ewe not fun. I thought at one point I was in labor.  :smt104 HOW FUN ...... 
My Thanksgiving - was not until 6pm,  My beautiful Daughter came to my house and spent the entire evening with me .. She brought me a plate of ( My Mom's famous Stuffing and Sweet Potatoes ) I do not eat meat ** because it does not like me. But my Daughter brought me some Dark Turkey ( my fave) I ate it. Damn my insides. We watched ELF and we talked and had a great time.  She had to leave because she had to be at work early in the am. She stayed for about 5 hours.

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - The Ohio Supreme court has said no to an appeal for a former cop convicted of murder.

In a 2-1 decision, the justices upheld the Aggravated Murder conviction of Bobby Cutts.

He's serving a 57- to-life sentence for the deaths of Jessie Davis and her unborn daughter.

Cutts' lawyers could ask the court to appeal their decision.

Good.   I'm glad the Ohio Supreme Court has said no appeal.  Lovin', do you remember if there were any child endangerment charges or other charges against him too?  Not only was Bobby Cutt's a murderer, but he also left his young son in the house alone for a many hours, and there was all that bleach that was used around the crime scene and etc.    I guess the murder charge against Jessie Davis and her unborn daughter was the most important of course, but I don't have any problem with having all the crimes committed stacked up on this guy either.   Thank you for bringing the info.  I remember this case, and I will need to go back and read about it again.    And as always, I wonder if Bobby Cutts will have to serve the entire sentence?  Or is he going to get off in a few years for good behavior or prison crowding or something?  Grrrrrr....

And I'm hoping if Cutt's lawyers ask the court to appeal their decision (which I would expect they would do) I hope it meets with anohter refusal.  I'm hoping there will be justice for Jessie Davis and her unborn daughter and Bobby Cutt's  will serve his sentence for what he did.

Oh, GE! My Mom used to make heavenly divinity! I miss it so much! I've never made it, but I love, love it! I remember mom used to say you couldn't make it on a rainy day!  I have no idea why that would have anything to do with it, but she did say that!

Well, I cheat on cookies. I buy a sugar cookie mix, and then ice them with canned cream cheese frosting. Then I sprinkle with red or green sugar, and it's Christmas cookies!   ::MonkeyHaHa::

I have no idea but it's true. I've had batches I would have to put in cake pans and eat it with spoons. ::MonkeyDevil::

I do make pumpkin bread................ I've got a really good recipe, and the fudge and peanut butter balls. And, of course, those intricate Christmas cookies!   ::MonkeyHaHa:: Honestly my son associates Christmas with the cookies, because I've made them that way since he was little.

I wouldn't know where to start with divinity, but hers was perfect everytime. She would buy the ingredients early and watch the weather. One morning we'd get up to cold cereal and milk and she would announce it was a good day for divinity, and the eggs would just have to wait!   ::MonkeyHaHa::

When my kids were little they would talk me into buying those little christmas cookie recipe books at the check out stand at the store. Because they thought some thing in them looked good.  Some turned out great others not so much.  ::santawink::

There's a couple of things I know I'll never be able to replicate that Mom made. One is divinity, and the other is sour dough bread. She kept a starter going and always had fresh bread baked. It was a hobby for her. I asked many times for her to show me how, but she was a better cook than a teacher, and wasn't the most patient person in the kitchen, so it just never worked. My son often wishes for his Mamaw's bread. I can do Sour Dough bread, but it's a far cry from hers.

Divinity
(you need a stand mixer)

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup light corn syrup
2 egg whites (room temp)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup diced candied cherries
1/4 cup diced candied pineapple
1 cup chopped walnuts

In a heavy saucepan, combine sugar, water and corn syrup.   
Cook and stir until sugar is dissolved and mixture comes to a boil.
Cook over medium heat, without stirring, until a candy thermometer reads 250 degrees F (hard-ball stage).
Remove from the heat.
In a mixing bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Slowly pour hot sugar mixture over egg whites, beating constantly with a stand mixer.
Add vanilla and salt. Beat until candy loses its gloss and holds its shape, about 12 - 14 minutes (use a timer). Stir in fruit and nuts.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper.

MUFFY  This tragedy happened about 10 miles from me.   I remember how hot it was in the summer of 2007.  I cried many tears for Jessie, her unborn daughter just weeks of being born, and Blake, her two year old son, left alone by his father for over 24 hours while he disposed of poor Jessie's body.  This piece of chit can't get enough bad, IMO.

There has been lots of good done for Blake & his Grandmother, who has custody, in this area even though the tough economic times have hit our area extreemly hard.  It is nice that people still care.  I've got to go pack lunches and get Bubba to school.  Have a great day. ::HelloKitty::

I am on the mend--sinus infection is leaving, back procedure in a week, and my kidneys are mostly working--with a little help.  I have felt your prayers and I believe heaven has too.  Can you imagine what heaven sounds like with a cage full of monkey prayers directed there?  Powerful!......the noise, of course, but the sincerity of the hearts of monkeys and friends asking to be heard is even more powerful.

The only thing they have not gotten a hold on is the d@mn hot flashes.  I bought the allergist office to a standstill yesterday with one.  They gave me my shot, then I went to get in my seat that someone had taken, so I had to retrieve my keys, water bottle, mag, etc. and had my way blocked while doing it, when I suddenly became the human torch.  My blood pressure shot from normal to 170/110, my skin and my joints burned, not to mention I turned so red, I was purple.  Oh, and did I mention the very attractive red spot that appears as a third eye between my eyebrows?  If you ever want to get attention at the doctor's office, do that.

Possible Bacterial Contamination Spurs Recall of All Ready-to-Drink Slim-Fast Canned Products

Dec. 4, 2009 -- All Slim-Fast ready-to-drink canned products are being recalled because of possible contamination with Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that may cause diarrhea and possibly nausea and/or vomiting.

Unilever United States, Inc. issued the voluntary recall in cooperation with the FDA.

"The probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote," states a Unilever news release. Unilever says it issued the recall "out of an abundance of caution" based on its quality testing of Slim-Fast ready-to-drink (RTD) products in cans.

The recall involves all ready-to-drink Slim-Fast products sold in cans, regardless of flavor, "Best-By" date, lot code, or UPC number.

The recall doesn't include any other Slim-Fast products, such as powdered shakes, meal bars, or snack bars.

The recalled cans are sold individually or packaged in paperboard cartons containing four, six, or 12 steel cans that are marked "11 FL OZ (325 mL)" each.

Unilever urges people to immediately discard Slim-Fast ready-to-drink products in cans and call the company at 800-896-9479 for a full refund. Unilever's Consumer Services Center is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time. A recorded message is available around the clock, every day.

Unilever states that it "is in the process of identifying and correcting the production issue, and will resume production and shipping of the product when the issue has been addressed and corrected."

At the gas station-convenience store at the intersection of Nursery Road and U.S. 19 in Clearwater, clerk Cody, the chocolate Lab wearing a shirt with a BP tag, greets the customers.

The sequence of events happens dozens of times every day at the BP gas station/convenience store at U.S. 19 at Nursery Road.

An unsuspecting customer pulls up to the drive-through window. But instead of a store clerk, up pops two paws, deep brown eyes and the tongue-flapping grin of a happy chocolate Labrador retriever named Cody.

Kids in the back seats of minivans often squeal with joy.

Even the usually stony faces of gruff construction worker-types can't help but crack a smile under the dog's unpretentious greeting.

"He hears the bell and goes running. When he pops up, that sets it off," said Karim Mansour, the store's and dog's owner. "Uncontrollable giggling."

The only thing that tops Cody's enthusiasm for a customer, is a customer who has a dog with him.

It all started one day five months ago when Mansour decided to bring his dog to work. He didn't think much of it at the time — he just wanted to have his best friend with him while he worked the sometimes slow, and occasionally, dangerous, early morning shift. The dog was given free rein of the store, and as a joke, Mansour put a shirt with a BP logo on the dog, and gave him a name tag.

"While he's here, he's an employee. My rule is, 'all employees need to wear the shirt,' " Mansour said.
 Without trying, Cody, always eager to greet any friendly stranger, quickly became a celebrity among store regulars.

"The first time I saw him, he had his tail just waggin' and waggin'," said Richard Mealey, who comes in a few times a week. "I love dogs. He's great."

But the best part might be the double-takes the dog elicits at the drive-through window.

"Oh, he's adorable," said customer Candy Thompson when greeted at the window by Cody. "Oh, he's such a big lover."

Photo shoots with cell phone cameras from the drive-through window are commonplace.

But the BP station is also like most other convenience stores — a sometimes strange melting pot of people from every class and creed, who at any given time could be going through some rough emotion. For those customers, Cody is the solution. He can do what the normal gas station clerk usually cannot.

"Convenience stores are so unpredictable. People come in drunk, stoned, angry, you name it," Mansour said. "He calms them down. Animals have the ability to soothe the human soul."

Earlier this year, a woman who had been fighting with her husband came into the station.
She came in all sorts of bawling and crying," Mansour said.

Cody, sensing something wasn't right, went to the woman. She put her face next to his, and sat on the floor with him. After several minutes talking to Cody, the woman pulled herself together.

"By the time she was done petting him, she'd stopped crying and seemed a lot better. 'Finally,' she must have thought, 'someone who listens and doesn't talk back,' " Mansour said.

Ironically, Mansour acquired Cody three years ago when an acquaintance, who was going through a divorce, could no longer take care of him.

Since Cody's following has grown, Mansour said, he has also seen a slight uptick in customer retention — a boon, considering his business has seen a slump in recent months.

"That Hess down the street is a superstore. It wipes me down. But people might come the extra half mile or so to get the more personal service — or just to see the dog, he said.

"In a dog-eat-dog world, when our economy sucks and business is hard, you've got to find a way to stand out."

This story beats love at first sight. Two people longed for each other, though they may have never met. They felt connected though they may never have touched. They'd even been given the same first names, though their families were strangers. By the time Meredith Grace Rittenhouse and Meredith Ellen Harrington were finally introduced, love was almost beside the point. Their bond was more mysterious, more fundamental. The Merediths are Chinese fraternal twins who were adopted by two different American families. The girls found each other almost six years ago, when they were 4, and haven't let go since.

Jiangmen, China, is a subtropical city, but during the winter it can cool off quite a bit. It was on an early December day that Meredith Grace's birth mother left the newborn baby girl outside and said goodbye. In China, children who are abandoned by their parents are often left in public places where they are found quickly. Meredith Grace's mother chose a busy part of town, the entrance to Holiday Park, across the street from an orphanage. If anyone knew how long Meredith Grace waited on that sidewalk or heard how loudly the baby cried, it might have been her own mother—women who abandon their babies have been said to wait nearby, still watching over their children, unable to do more than see who comes along.

Meredith Grace was taken in by the Jiangmen City Social Welfare Institute on Dec. 8, 1999. She was described as weak upon arrival in the single typed page of history the orphanage gave her adoptive family. The administrators guessed she was 1 week old and gave her a birthday of Dec. 1. Two weeks later, another baby girl, also found nearby, arrived. She was given a birthday of Dec. 16, though now she celebrates on the first day of the month.
During the nine months the two girls lived at the orphanage, they likely did not have much contact. As far as their American adoptive families know, there was no reason for the institute to suspect that the girls were twins. They lacked a strong physical resemblance then. At the orphanage, babies slept in stainless-steel cribs lined up end to end. They were taken out to play on bamboo mats placed on the pink tile floor, but the infants would have been too young to interact much. Their adoptive parents believe, however, that the girls were cared for by the same two nannies, which would suggest that their cribs were in the same room. When they were 4 years old, both girls were able to remember who was the "nice" nanny and who was the "mean one" when they looked at a picture of the women (even though the "mean one" was smiling). Such is the detective work of families hoping to find clues that their daughters knew each other from the beginning.

When she was 10 months old, Meredith Grace moved into her new home in suburban Chicago with Jim and Susan Rittenhouse, one a science-fiction buff and the other a dog lover, and now, together, parents. Meredith Grace was an early talker, and like her father, an enthusiastic one. Bubbly and smart, she developed a passion for geography and soon was drawing maps of the continents and begging for a globe. She adjusted to her American life well, but she was obsessed with the idea of sisters. She used to tell her preschool teacher about the one she had in China; her parents took this to mean that she wanted one. Asked to complete the sentence, "When I grow up I want to be a … ," a 3-year-old Meredith's answer was "sister."
One month before the Rittenhouses adopted Meredith Grace, Leigh Anne and Mike Harrington had named their little girl Meredith Ellen and taken her home to Birmingham, Ala. Soon after, Meredith Ellen spoke her first words. When she was 2, she asked for a globe and started studying the continents. Meredith Ellen was quieter than the sister she didn't yet know about in Chicago, and she went through periods of melancholy. When she was 2 she told her parents, "I'm so lonely. I wish I had a sister." Leigh Anne and Mike decided to give her one—they adopted Ally when Meredith was 2 and a half, but the gloom didn't fade.

In Chicago, the Rittenhouses were getting ready to adopt a sister for their Meredith when a Yahoo group posting caught Jim's eye. He was skimming over a listserv connecting parents who'd adopted kids from the Jiangmen Social Welfare Institute at the same time. He rarely bothered to read messages anymore, now that it was almost four years on, but one posting was from a family he'd once exchanged a few friendly messages with during the lead-up to their adoptions. He remembered that they'd chosen the same name for their daughters. Now the other family was posting a recent photograph. Jim moved his mouse and clicked. That little click turned out to be a kaboom. There on his screen was what looked like his own daughter's face. His wife was in the next room. "Honey?" he said.
