The 23 year old appeared in court in Lima on Tuesday charged with robbing and killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores in his hotel room in May 2010. He addressed the court in Spanish, according to a report in El Comercio.

Edwar Alvarez, a lawyer for the Flores family, told the newspaper that her father Ricardo Flores identified one of his daughter's wallets, found in van der Sloot's possession after he fled to neighboring Chile following her death. The grieving father was described as being calmer than he was last week -- when he first came face to face with the Dutchman in court -- but he choked up as he spoke to reporters outside.

"I have to consult my wife, but I'm 95 percent sure that [wallet] belonged to Stephany," he said.

Alvarez said the Flores family is seeking a sentence of life imprisonment for the Dutchman, considering this would be a "just penalty" for the crimes of robbery and murder. Joran van der Sloot, the imprisoned Dutch native charged with killing a woman in Lima, Peru, and extorting money from the mother of missing U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, may be a father-to-be.

The rumor that the Dutchman enjoys private visits from a Peruvian girlfriend, who is now rumored to be pregnant with his child, surfaced in several foreign media outlets, including Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, SBS Broadcasting and Peru's Periodismo en Línea news agency.

Flores family want life for Joran van der Sloot

The family of Peruvian woman Stephany Flores who was murdered in a hotel room in Lima a year ago are demanding a life sentence for Joran van der Sloot who is accused of her murder reports Peruvian newspaper El Comercio.

The family say there is clear evidence that robbery was the motive for the murder and not as the Dutchman's defence claims an outburst of emotion. Earlier this month a Dutch friend of Van der Sloot said he asked him for money via an internet messaging system. He says he was broke and desparate. If robbery is the motive behind the killing of Stephany Flores, Van der Sloot could face a life sentence under Peruvian law.

Stephany's father Ricardo Flores told the press that he wants to put an end to the facilities which are at Van der Sloot's disposal in prison. He says the Dutchman is running a shop in sweets and cold drinks in prison and he also recieves visits outside visiting hours.

Mr Flores and Van der Sloot faced one another in court today. The father of the victim was asked to identify a purse found on Van der Sloot when he was arrested. He said he was 95 percent certain the purse belonged to his daughter.

Strategy
During the court session it became apparent that the Dutchman does speak Spanish. His former lawyer, Máximo Altez, claimed his client had been forced to sign a document in Spanish under pressure which stated he understood the charges against him. Now that Van der Sloot has conceded he speaks Spanish the case can no longer be held up when there is no Dutch translator, according to Radio Netherlands journalist Pablo Gámez, who is following the case.

“He wrote that he’d stop at nothing.” The man in question: Joran van der Sloot, the young Dutchman awaiting trial in Peru for the killing of local young woman, Stephany Flores. The words are those of a friend of Joran, who has told Dutch police how the 24-year-old chatted with him from Peru via the MSN online messaging service and told him he was flat broke and desperate. It appears this testimony could be crucial when it comes to the decision where the Dutchman is to face a murder or a manslaughter charge in Peru.

In May last year, Joran Van der Sloot told his friend that he only had enough money for food. Two days later he killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel room after an evening playing poker. Three days later he was arrested in Chile and extradited to Peru, where he’s been waiting for a year for his trial to begin.

Dutch police questioned his friend in June 2010; one month after Joran van der Sloot was detained in Peru. The interview came after the Peruvian authorities formally asked the Dutch for assistance. A 40-page Dutch report has been delivered to the prosecution and defence teams in Peru. The testimony appears to show the degree of desperation on the part of the defendant, who was in Lima at the time for a poker tournament. It could, in fact, ultimately see him facing a murder charge instead of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

“The information from the Netherlands undermines Van der Sloot’s evidence,” says the lawyer representing the Flores family, Edward Álvarez. It would appear to show that Ms Flores did not die as a result of a fit of rage over the laptop but simply because she refused to give Mr Van der Sloot money. The laptop story is also contradicted by results from the Peruvian police investigation, which reveal that no documents were opened on the laptop on the day of the murder.

Flat broke
Since his arrest, there have been further indications that Joran van der Sloot was and is penniless. The same friend in the Netherlands says Joran begged him - from his cell - to send him money. He says he sent 50 euros for the purchase of soap and toothpaste in prison. Money was also the reason for the departure of Mr Altez as the Dutchman’s lawyer. “Financial disagreement” and differences of opinion about how to conduct the defence case were the reasons given. It is said that Mr Altez stood to earn nothing from the case.

The Flores family lawyer says the Dutch defendant will face a heavy sentence if money was indeed the motive for the killing. “Here, you get life for robbery with murder,” he explains.

Good point San.  It's like the old joke "How can you tell he's lying?"  Answer:  "His lips are moving". 

Joran hates Beth so much he will never tell her the truth.  Let's not forget Joran blames Beth for ruining his life.  There has to be something extraordinary in it for him to tell what happened to Natalee.  Even then he will only give bits and pieces.

I think Joran is possibly cooperating in Peru knowing he will likely get a longer sentence, which he thinks will keep him out of reach to the U. S. authorities.  Life is the longest sentence he could be given for Stephany's robbery and murder in Peru, but a death sentence is possible if/when he's ever tried in the U. S. for Natalee's murder.

It's all about Joran, for Joran and he seems to have things all worked out for himself to be very comfortable in a prison that most would expect a monster like himself to have been shanked or beaten to death by now.

If the Flores family's request for his extraordinary privileges to be stopped should actually be acted on, and/or if Joran is convicted and sentenced and then actually transferred from the "safe" environment he's in right now, to general population; then it might seem beneficial for him to "make a deal" in Natalee's case.  I just don't see that happening now when he seems to be in control of how he lives in Castro Castro.

Kidding aside Wreck, I agree with you about feelin skeptical the US could bring  Murder 1 charges against Joran.  At this point, any amount of jail time and inconvenience that can be meted out to Joran is good imo.  I'm not sure we'll ever see him here in the US for even the wire fraud, but maybe just maybe if it gets that far, maybe some other hands can be played.  I don't know. 

I agree, but I think Joran's comfy prison days in Peru are about over. Senor Flores welds too much power -- he will be headed for general pop soon. That will be his end. I just hope they can somehow get the goods on Natalee before that happens.

Birmingham, Ala (WIAT)  It looks like self-styled gambler Joran van der Sloot is running out of cards in his legal battles in Peru.

The hearing Tuesday at Lima's Castro Castro prison didn't go well for the young Dutchman accused of robbing and killing 21 year old college student Stephany Flores.

Although van der Sloot admitted he killed Flores when he was interrogated after his arrest last year, his former lawyer was appealing to get that confession tossed out on the grounds Peruvian police didn't provide a qualified translator.  Van der Sloot participated in Tuesday's hearing in Spanish which undercuts that translator claim.  Of course it's possible his new lawyers could claim he's become more fluent in his 13 months in the notorious prison.

 Now that Van der Sloot has conceded he speaks Spanish, the case can no longer be held up when there is no Dutch interpreter, according to Radio Netherlands journalist Pablo Gámez, who is following the case.

But the translator question may be the least of the challenges van der Sloot faces.

Birmingham, Ala (WIAT)  Tuesday's hearing in a Lima prison had all the twists and turns we've come to expect from anything involving Joran van der Sloot. He's suddenly capable of participating in Spanish and the local media are chasing rumors of a pregnant girl friend who's been helping ease his time in prison.

Federal prosecutors here in Alabama waiting their turn for a crack at Joran van der Sloot are a step closer.

Van der Sloot was indicted last year on federal charges of wire fraud and extortion stemming from an offer to give information about Natalee Holloway's fate in exchange for $250,000.  The feds say he took the money but offered up bogus information.

But the U.S. charges are stuck in a legal queue awaiting the disposition of charges in Peru where van der Sloot is accused of killing 21 year old Stephany Flores.  And after more than a year, it appears that case is finally heading for trial.

Joran van der Sloot is a walking contradiction...so is it any surprise he's about to celebrate Father's Day as two families mourn daughters he's accused of killing?

The rumor burning up the internet is that van der Sloot has a pregnant girl friend who has been visiting him in prison. He's been there for more than a year, so you do the math on when and where she got pregnant...if she is, indeed, pregnant.

Peru's largest newspaper, El Commercio has been unable to confirm that the girl friend is pregnant but tabloids and websites are running with the rumor.

The so far unnamed woman reportedly works at the Atlantis Casino in Lima, Peru where van der Sloot met Stephany Flores. He's accused of robbing and killing the 21 year old student.

He's confessed to killing her but claims it was in a fit of rage after she found material relating to Natalee Holloway on his laptop in his hotel room.

Here's what's interesting....  According to Forbes in 2008 (http://www.forbes.com/lists/2008/18/biz_2000global08_The-Global-2000_IndName.html), Banco Santander   was the 6th largest multinational company in the banking industry alone, and the 21st largest multinational company overall.

Banco Santander (http://www.santander.com) is out of Spain...which, if I recall correctly, is where Briesen was trying to do business on the new port construction in Aruba...without putting it out for bid.

I just thought it was interesting that this huge bank, ranked in the top 25 corporations in the world wasn't included in the list of banks in the Financial Times article.  I have no idea if it means anything, of course, but it does make me wonder why.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - In Joran van der Sloot's world nothing is too outrageous to believe. But the Peruvian prison ministry, INPE, says don't believe stuff like a pregnant girl friend, a lucrative prison concession and snack business or claims of "royal treatment."

All of those charges have been made recently by Ricardo Flores, the father of murder victim Stephany Flores. And the claims and charges escalated after a prison court hearing for van der Sloot this Tuesday on robbery and murder charges.

But the Dutch website AD.NL is quoting an INPE report discounting all the allegations.

The INPE points out that van der Sloot is housed in a restricted wing of the prison with access to only five other prisoners. That would make the claimed snacks concession highly unlikely.

The prison bureau also says van der Sloot has had only one female visitor in his 13 months at the Castro Castro prison and that is believed to be the confrontation between him and Beth Holloway.

Joran van der Sloot’s former lawyer has denied allegations that his ex-client fathered a child by a Peruvian woman.

The woman, Leydi Figueroa, is willing to take a DNA test to prove that Mr Van der Sloot is not her baby’s father, Máximo Altez told Peruvian daily El Comercio.

Mr Altez said he paid the woman on several occasions to deliver things to Mr Van der Sloot in prison.

On Saturday, television station Frecuencia Latina said Mr Van der Sloot had fathered a son by Ms Figueroa, adding that his mother is due to travel to Lima to take the baby to Holland.

The broadcaster based its report on statements made by Edward Álvarez, the lawyer for the family of Stephany Flores, the 21-year-old Peruvian woman Mr Van der Sloot is accused of murdering.

Joran knows good and well it's not a "private matter" when he's in jail charged with murder and did not have the approval for conjugal visits.  He just wants to stay in the news, if he doesn't confirm or deny (not that anyone would have any reason to believe anything that comes out of his mouth) it will stay in the media that much longer.  Just one more slap in the face to the families of his victims, tormenting them with his ability to defy the law even when he's incarcerated!

The mother of the child was at the first hearing (that was postponed since Joran didn't have a lawyer) why would she have attended that hearing if she's not seriously involved with him?  Unless maybe she was paid to attend to pass along first hand knowledge of what took place?  I thought I'd read that the hearing would be closed to the public.

I also don't understand why Anita would take the baby to Holland, or why for that matter the mother would allow her to do that...  Surely DNA tests can be done in Peru.

Uceda Figueroa Lady, the alleged girlfriend of Joran Van der Sloot Dutch, denied having any relationship with him and even said he did not know it (http://even said he did not know it).

As indicated in the program "Sunday", he once went to the Castro Castro prison, where Van der Sloot in custody for the murder of the young Stephany Flores to visit a relative, but at no time met the Dutch.

"Burn Out" is a suspense thriller inspired by how the Natalee Holloway case unfolded. The Alabama teen disappeared in Aruba almost six years ago and her mother’s search for answers has captured headlines ever since.

“As a mother of three children, that story struck a chord with me,” she said in an earlier interview. “I couldn’t fathom losing a child let alone not ever knowing what happened to them.”

Hohenstein said "Burn Out" is about a mother whose daughter vanishes when she is 3 years old. From the search to find her child, the woman creates an agency to help find missing persons. One of her first cases is a search for a firefighter who goes missing during a warehouse fire.

The INPE, Peru's prison ministry, denied those claims in a recent report. The group told Dutch Web site ad.nl that van der Sloot has received no special privileges in prison, that he's only allowed contact with five other inmates, and that he's had only one female visitor in his time at Castro Castro prison.

Van der Sloot faces murder charges in Peru for the killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, who was found dead in his hotel room last May. He is also suspected in the disappearance of Mountain Brook teenager Natalee Holloway, who went missing in Aruba in 2005. Holloway's mother Beth confronted van der Sloot at the Peruvian prison last fall, and may be the lone female visitor that prison officials acknowledge.

Los Angeles, Calif. - On Thursday, Beth Holloway, the mother of missing Alabama teen Natalee Holloway, compared the behavior of the man she believes killed her daughter, Joran van der Sloot and Casey Anthony, who's currently on trial for killing her toddler daughter, Caylee Anthony.

Casey, 25, is accused of murdering Caylee, 2, in the summer of 2008 using chloroform and duct tape.

Natalee, 18, was visiting Aruba in 2005 with her high school graduating class when she vanished after leaving a nightclub with van der Sloot.

“If Casey Anthony is the queen of all liars, then Joran van der Sloot... is without a doubt the king. He is believed to have killed Natalee Holloway...” noted HLN TV host Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Pinsky welcomed Beth to his show to discuss the similarities between Casey and van der Sloot.

“...both of them had the litany of lies – you know... from both of them. Something that I think is even more so striking is this mode of operation from the two,” said Beth.

She noted van der Sloot's story about Natalee's disappearance began similar to Casey's stories about Caylee, saying, the Dutchman initially said “Oh, I left her at the beach. She’s fine. No involvement. She’s alive,” and that Casey said in the beginning she had left Caylee “...with the nanny, she’s fine.”

Beth continued, “Then as things began to get a little warmer and more uncomfortable, then he changed it to, well, it was an accident, something tragic happened, but, you know, it was an accident. Same thing kind of with Casey. Well, it was an accident. Now, they’ve changed them from an alive Natalee and Caylee to a deceased Natalee and Caylee.”

She noted, “...then, now, they both tend to be leading towards now they’ve got them both deceased...”

Psychologist Lisa Boesky, also a guest on the show, chimed in saying, “...I think they both feel that they’re, obviously, above the law, above morals and values... I think the fact that they both alluded the police and investigators for so long really... It shows that level of superiority, that confidence that they told their lies, and it really shows some real lack of remorse, empathy, guilt.”

Pinsky said, “When I talk to profilers, they always make the point that they base their lies on sort of the receptivity of the audience. What the audience is likely to believe in the moment, and you know, they base it on us. People are actually feeling people who have empathy and who would, you know, are concerned and connected with our emotions, and maybe our ability to tolerate these lies evolves in a way that they present them...”

Beth said she describes the phenomenon as a “vortex of lies.”

She added, “...if anybody gets close to the vortex, they get sucked in or the perpetrators begin to throw people into the vortex.”

Pinsky stated he uses the word “vortex” to explain what those who lie do as well.

“...Casey Anthony creates a huge vortex. People like Vasco Thompson get pulled into the vortex. Any passersby just get kind of pulled in...”

Beth also said of Casey, “No parent of a missing, murdered child gives conflicting accounts to explain what happened to their child. And then, their child that’s missing winds up being found dead in three layers of garbage bag.”

Joran van der Sloot sits in a rat-infested solitary cell in Miguel Castro Castro Prison, one of the world’s most violent prisons, awaiting a trial that is expected to begin next month. One of the most hated men in the world is finally humbled.

Or perhaps not. There is a strong possibility that he will elude justice once again. Because Peru does not have life sentences or the death penalty, van der Sloot faces, at most, 35 years. He could be out in as little as 20 months.

That’s the twisted luck that seems to follow van der Sloot, whom many American viewers believe got away with murder.

Six years ago, at age 17, he became the chief suspect in the international case of the missing 18-year-old Alabama girl Natalee Holloway. Van der Sloot was the last person to see the young cheerleader alive. Holloway’s body was never found, and he was never convicted of the crime.

Then, in a bizarre twist of fate, five years later, on the very date of Holloway’s disappearance, van der Sloot was implicated in another international homicide. In a seedy Peruvian hotel after a night of gambling, he confessed to savagely pummeling a 21-year-old student to death with his fists. Prosecutors say it was a premeditated murder to rob the young woman of her gambling winnings; van der Sloot’s defense team says it was self-defense and a crime of passion.

The people who’ve met van der Sloot describe him as a sociopath, a predator, a psychopath. Journalists Lisa Pulitzer and Cole Thompson, in their new examination of his life, have their own label: “Monster.”

Birmingham, Ala (WIAT) The title pretty much tells the story.  Portrait of a Monster: Joran Van Der Sloot, a Murder in Peru and the Natalee Holloway Mystery.

The book by Lisa Pulitzer and Cole Thompson is due to ship July 5.  It traces Joran van der Sloot from a chubby, privileged teenager on Aruba to his cell in Peru's Castro Castro prison awaiting charges in the death of one girl and widespread belief he's responsible for the disappearance of another.

His few supporters think he's a persecuted victim.  Many others agree with the authors that he's a monster.  Prison psychiatrists in Peru call him a sociopath.  Others think he's an international serial killer.

One thing for sure, he's inalterably changed the lives of the Holloway and Flores families while grabbing notoriety and attention worldwide.

His dubious fame started the night he left an Oranjestad nightclub with 18 year old Natalee Holloway.  The Mountain Brook teen was on a graduation trip to Aruba.  She was never seen again.  Van der Sloot became infamous during the investigation.

Five years of innuendo, false confessions and changing stories.  His supporters claim he is the victim of the vindictive Holloway-Twitty family.  Much of the world thinks he got away with murder.

Dutch film maker Paul Ruven has a movie coming out that retells the story from the eyes of a fictional reporter.

So what does the new book have to add or offer?  It's a comprehensive profile of the problems van der Sloot displayed before and after Natalee Holloway including a jaunt to Thailand when Aruba became too uncomfortable to stay in.  And there's the pervasive thread of getting away with it.

Author Pulitzer told the NY Post, “He seems to be convinced that that he will evade the system once again. He feels like he’s going to emerge from this relatively unscathed.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - Dutch reporter makes his living covering sensational crimes, but according to Dutch newspaper Almere Vandaag his work is more like an animal trainer.

The newspaper quotes van den Heuvel, who has heavily covered Joran van der Sloot's cases across several contintents, as likening criminals to wild, dangerous animals.

Theaters were sold out for the Caribbean Spotlight Series as there was enormous interest among local audiences in films produced in the region about the region. Judges for the competition were producer and director Emmanual Itier, whose film narrated by Sharon Stone, “The Invocation”, was screened at The Cinemas in Paseo Herencia. Emmanual is French, living in L.A. and a film correspondent for Rock Magazines and MCM, a French MTV network.

Noel de Sousa is a veteran actor and a walking encyclopedia on film. He has played in dozens of movies, including a pivotal role as the family patriarch in “Indian Gangster.” He is a member of the Academy of TV Arts and Sciences, AFTRA and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Rounding out the jury and representing the local viewpoint was MORNING NEWS journalist/photographer Rosalie Klein. Ms. Klein was a producer/production manager in the commercial film industry in New York City for a number of years before coming to live in Aruba in 1980. She has chronicled Aruban current events and particularly the arts since 2003, for a number island based English publications.

The awards dinner was an elegant event around the pool deck of Gold Coast Villas. Aruba’s Minister of Social & Economic Affairs and Culture, Michelle Hooyboer-Winklaar presented the awards.

Kyle Kingman:  I took the proportions of the body form from the head, to shoulder, to a 90 degree angle which I believed to be the hem line of Natalee's skirt. I then took those proportions and matched them to the photo of Natalee with what she was last seen wearing. The proportions matched within an inch from head, to shoulder, to skirt line. Based on this comparison and with what we believed we saw in the Dec 29th video, Tim Miller contacted the family and told them the 99.9% comment. I told Tim not to do anything until we have forensic results back after the site is processed.

Kyle Kingman: I get done in the survey room backing up the ROV dive and head to the back deck to talk to the Polis divers and see what they sampled and see the Polis boat way in the distance heading away fast. John doesn't seem concerned at all, but I am very dissapointed, concerned, and burning inside because I have a feeling that I/we will never know what they took from the trap. That evening I talked to John asking when we plan on recovering the trap. Previously this was part of the talks and plan, but this time he doesn't seem concerned about ever looking into the trap further. After John verbally BASHED me about the trap for what I said to Tim Miller about the sand body-form and that I believed her skirt was under the sand, John pretty much committed himself to the belief the trap wasn't what we were after. This shocked me because it was exactly what we were looking for- a fish trap lost at sea with human remains.

Kyle Kingman:  John is not a believer in the trap. He took ALE's word as gospel that it wasn't case related, yet never studied the videos or bothered to inquire further. He had plans on doing business with Aruba and in S. America and he didn't want to hurt any feelings by talks hinting at lack of complete trust and friendship. I did not feel the same and we had a major difference in opinion. He was the one who never pressed ALE to be completely open with us with the trap evidence. I would have forced them to. However, John was the one paying my invoices so I was forced to sit back and hope for the best.

Kyle Kingman:  While we were searching shortly before Christmas, we were contacted by an Aruban detective who was involved in the Holloway case.
 
Kyle Kingman: Just before Christmas they are contacted by a detective and his brother who gave them information that turned out to be the correct latitude.

Kyle Kingman: He came to us during the search along with his brother who had a "vision" on where Natalee was disposed.

Kyle Kingman: The brother thought they were coordinates, but it was just a latitude. Oddly, the latitude was within a half mile from where we found the trap and centered on Arashi beach. 
 
Kyle Kingman: Based on this latitude we payed a little more attention to the northern portions of the search grid near that Latitude. The trap was found shortly after, within the original search area, but very close to the provided latitude.

Kyle Kingman:  I think he used his brother and gave us only the amount of information he felt we needed to come across the trap.

Kyle Kingman:  If a key detective's brother knew the latitude the trap was disposed at or very near, then it's probable the detective knew the same.

Kyle Kingman:  The implications of this are tremendous. If true, it means that the early investigators knew where and how Natalee was disposed and it was kept secret and covered up.

I don't believe that Kyle or anyone else is allowed to review the case documents, according to the policy of the prosecutors office

I thought the beauty of the Persistence is that they were to do a true grid seach mission which depends not on psychics or even tips from the authorities, and as such their work would be independent of the investigation. They were there simply to attempt to search a predefined area for Natalee's remains.

So I am not sure why they have been lured into defending the work of the Aruban authorities or a discussion of the validity of the investigation as they are not knowledgeable as to the investigation, other than what they have been told by these Arubans. There are an awful lot of highly educated people who have been chumped by people of far less formal education. A well trained police force is not thwarted by a grieving mother and the media.

And Kyle, I by no means am being disrespectful, I think you are brilliant, sincerely. But I don't think your education or work experience has prepared you for a cover up by these types of people. And I think you may be severely underestimating the education, experience, and wisdom of the monkeys and other coverup believers. Don't let them make a fool of you. We need you.

Kyle Kingman:  I found the trap on 1:45am Christmas morning.  I got the OK to begin our ROV dive series for the 29th, so I made it our first dive. We got visual of the fish trap and that it was suspicious. Basically, the fish trap door was open and there appeared to be a skull and torso-shape in sand on the door inside the trap Reviewing the 29-Dec video I noticed the torso shape in sand had a 90 degree angle and that the sand was supported from falling through the bottom of the trap, which was slightly excavated by currents. I proportioned out the distance from the top of the head, to shoulder, to that 90 degree angle and it was a match to Natalee's photo of her standing -head, to shoulder, to the end of her denim skirt. I showed TM the proportional match and the possibility of a skirt under the sand and he said he's going to tell the parents. I said definitely not until we sample the trap and get results. He made the call to Dave and Beth independently.

Kyle Kingman: The Persistence had no divers on the 7th. Tim Trahan was our diver on the 30th-Dec, but he was out of the country at the time. The Aruban divers were on the police boat, dove from their boat, and returned to their boat.

Kyle Kingman: The fabric(s?) are not visible on either the Dec 29th or 30th dives. There is about an inch of sand over the fabrics. The fabrics are completely covered. The diver sampled the sand and found the fabric underneath the sand. He then bagged the blue fabric. If the other bag contains fabric, it was also in the sand. There was also something possibly recovered from far inside the trap. In the video the diver is inside the trap with just below his knees showing. I don't know what was sampled far inside the trap if anything.

Kyle Kingman: In my opinion that last pic from Jan 7th should be absolutely intriguing and flip your mind from what you thought you knew. In case it isn't clear.. notice the blue denim-like fabric.

Kyle Kingman: Notice the blue fabric swayed in the current.

Kyle Kingman: The blue tarp piece was found approx 6-10 ft away from the trap opening.

Kyle Kingman: The blue tarp and blue fabric was confirmed by Richardson and Mos. Remember, they each only confirmed one piece. One confirmed blue fabric, the other confirmed tarp. From the video you see both.

Kyle Kingman: The most likely to remain at or near it's original location was the skull, which is why I was so convinced the object pictured was a skull.

Kyle Kingman: The bag that is above the denim bag looks to me as though it contains pieces of vertebrae.

Kyle Kingman:  I requested all samples to be brought on board the Persistence for visual and top-side photographs. It was ignored by the project lead (John S.) who felt the Arubans would follow whatever they needed to do as far as proper protocol.

Kyle Kingman:  The Arubans told us there wasn't anything of interest in the trap based on the visual-only inspection (Dateline and Tim Miller present).
 
Kyle Kingman:  John definitely believed the Arubans at their every word

Kyle Kingman:  Aruban divers deemed the cage to be not case related, and therefore Aruba had no interest in it.  At that point, I made the statement to all on board that we do have an interest and that we would recover the cage ourselves.  That is when Mos said they would dive on it but it would take 1 -2 weeks for a forensics team to arrive and that he would let Persistence know.

Kyle Kingman:  The FBI said they needed an invitation. I brought it up to Mos and Richardson and they were talking as if it were a possibility along with a Dutch forensic team. Mos said it would take about 10-14 days to have a Dutch forensic team on site. Never heard another word about it.

Kyle Kingman:  On the night of the 30th (I believe this was Tim's last night on the Persistence) I approached Tim and proposed some ideas to him. I suggested that we shouldn't take the Aruban Polis divers at their word and proceed with planning a recovery of the trap. Also, I proposed the trap site may not be pristine or the Polis may have already knew about it. This statement was backed up by several comments we heard, behavior we observed, and other things. Tim told me he thought I was right but didn't know what to do about it.

Kyle Kingman:  After the Dec 30th dive John [Silvetti] didn't want Tim Miller on board the Persistence because he said Tim wasn't necessary any more and was a liability. I don't know what that exactly means, but Tim wasn't hurting anything except releasing the statements to the press and Holloways that we found Natalee.

Kyle Kingman - 03/20/08:  My intentions here at this forum weren't to just spew out all that I know. My intentions were to get a few trusted close people informed, armed, and organized. Then, once organized get a hold of Beth and present things in a controlled private and safe manner. THEN come up with a plan to procede that is well thought-out.

Kyle Kingman - 03/20/08:  Since I got the go ahead from Tim (Trahan), we can legally move forward. The document should follow-up the screen shots and trap content description. We can sent the document after the initial dialog. I trust then she (Beth) will be interested in the document.

The contents of the document should be discussed and agreed upon by the birds. Since I'm new here, I should take a back seat to this IMO. I would think it would be a case synthesis which culminates with the trap contents and lack of interest and motivation to fully process the site. Perhaps Beth will then use the document to create the proper motivation using the information to apply political pressure from both sides. The problem I ran into earlier with the FBI was that their hands are tied to do anything unless they're invited to the party. I think political pressure properly applied will ensure an invite to the party. Thoughts?

Needing to step away from Caylee thread for awhile, decided to come back to my roots.  Since I haven't seen anything in the news lately about JVS, I assumed all was the same, him sitting and figuring his future (when he gets out) or (whatever other con he can accoplish, while waiting), I thought I'd check. 

Any new news lately from Peru, besides Aruba still sucks and has dead people all over?

I had questions which were very unsettling about what I had observed during the search including the events surrounding the trap inspection by the Aruban divers and how the samples were handled by ALE - solely Richardson. This made me very uneasy. It was unsettling and I had no one to talk about it with. The Freebird forum was a place where I could safely discuss the unsettling aspects of the search and see if there were any connections. I only did so after the group agreed that nothing would leave the forum. I never wished for any of it to leave the forum.

Kyle Kingman:   Richardson was very quick to dismiss the trap as case-relevant. Richardson was insisting that we keep looking FAR out to sea in very deep water.  He was the one briefing the ALE divers on how to handle the site.  Hhe was the one who handled all the evidence that came out of the water.  He was the one who admits to personally sending the fabric sample to the FBI for testing (although it got to the FBI two weeks after he said he sent it).

Kyle Kingman: The Persistence had no divers on the 7th. Tim Trahan was our diver on the 30th-Dec, but he was out of the country at the time. The Aruban divers were on the police boat, dove from their boat, and returned to their boat.

Kyle Kingman: They were immediately whisked away by the Aruban police and not seen of again by us on the 7th.

Kyle Kingman:  John is not a believer in the trap. He took ALE's word as gospel that it wasn't case related, yet never studied the videos or bothered to inquire further. He had plans on doing business with Aruba and in S. America and he didn't want to hurt any feelings by talks hinting at lack of complete trust and friendship.

Kyle Kingman:  Remember, working in Aruban waters you are subject to their invitation. We did not have any of our people in the water. It was our ROV though recording the ops. I didn't agree to how it was but didn't have an option, nor was it my decision to be made.

If I understood Kyle correctly, and that would be that the Arubans retrieved and possessed all finds, not sharing anything with the crew, then that effort was a waste of time and effort. The only thing it could have accomplished was to locate additional evidence for the Arubans to destroy.

I thought the beauty of the Persistence is that they were to do a true grid seach mission which depends not on psychics or even tips from the authorities, and as such their work would be independent of the investigation. They were there simply to attempt to search a predefined area for Natalee's remains.

So I am not sure why they have been lured into defending the work of the Aruban authorities or a discussion of the validity of the investigation as they are not knowledgeable as to the investigation, other than what they have been told by these Arubans.

ARUBA (Tier 2)*

Aruba is primarily a destination for women and men subjected to sex trafficking and forced labor. Those at greatest risk of trafficking are foreign women in Aruba’s commercial sex trade and foreign men and women in the service and construction industries. Also at risk are Chinese men and women working in supermarkets as well as Indian men in the jewelry sector, and Caribbean and South American women in domestic service. There are indications of past instances of Aruban children under 18 in prostitution in Aruba.

The Government of Aruba does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. The government has not yet successfully prosecuted any trafficking offenders to date, though the Aruban anti-trafficking coordinator has demonstrated outstanding leadership in advancing the government’s response to human trafficking during her short time in office, and the government initiated several complex prosecutions during the reporting season. The government also showed improved efforts in the area of victim protection, primarily officials’ increased victim identification measures.

Recommendations for Aruba: Implement procedures to guide health officials charged with screening people in prostitution on the identification and referral of suspected victims of human trafficking to the anti-trafficking committee; formalize victim protection policies for adults and children that include provisions ensuring identified trafficking victims are not punished for crimes committed as a direct result of their human trafficking situation and ensuring safe and, to the extent possible, voluntary repatriation for foreign victims; consider providing the anti-trafficking committee with an independent budget as a means to ensure its effectiveness; include the child protection agency as part of the anti-trafficking committee and in training opportunities; empower the anti-trafficking committee to direct formal training opportunities toward committee-identified areas of high need; expand multi-lingual public outreach activities; and consider ways to educate clients of the sex trade about the causes and consequences of trafficking.

Prosecution

The Government of Aruba demonstrated strong law enforcement efforts during the reporting period. Aruba prohibits all forms of trafficking in persons through Articles 203a and 286a of its criminal code, which prescribes penalties ranging from four to 15 years’ imprisonment. These penalties are sufficiently stringent and are commensurate with those for other serious crimes, such as rape. In 2010, the government initiated seven trafficking investigations and arrested four people, including one police officer, in a case involving forced prostitution and forced labor. Authorities initiated prosecutions of three of the arrestees and a disciplinary process for the police officer. The prosecutions have involved many witnesses from multiple countries, and the government expected to bring the case to trial in late 2011. Two of the defendants remained in pre-trial detention. During the reporting period, the anti-trafficking coordinator took steps toward elevating the discourse on trafficking complicity in the region by speaking in public forums about her concerns regarding the linkage between official complicity and human trafficking in Aruba. The police established a team that specializes in human trafficking cases. The Royal Military Police and Dutch NGO Comensha have offered periodic training opportunities as has Aruba’s anti-trafficking coordinator.

Protection

The Government of Aruba demonstrated progress in its victim protection efforts during the reporting period. Largely due to the positive work of the anti-trafficking committee, the government identified up to 46 adult victims of human trafficking in 2010, a significant achievement, particularly when contrasted with the lack of any victims identified in 2009. The government did not provide routine, formal training in victim identification to law enforcement officers and officials charged with providing regular health checks on people in Aruba’s sex trade. The government implemented a victim referral mechanism; the government directed all reported trafficking cases to a small group from the anti-trafficking committee, which devised assistance plans tailored for each victim identified in coordination with the Bureau for Victim Assistance and other government agencies. The committee did not, however, have dedicated funds to provide specialized services for trafficking victims. In one situation, an NGO that reportedly did not receive government funding assisted the committee by sheltering a male victim. In another situation, the government employed a Kingdom of the Netherlands memorandum of understanding to obtain Kingdom funds for victims’ access to protective services. During the reporting period, the government issued a ministerial decree to ensure victims have access to legal aid. Aruba’s child protection agency would handle victim assistance for any cases of child trafficking, though the government did not identify any child trafficking victims during the reporting period.

The government encouraged trafficking victims to participate in investigations and prosecutions of trafficking offenders and did not punish identified victims for unlawful acts committed as a direct result of being trafficked. According to Aruban officials, the government offered identified trafficking victims relief from immediate deportation. The government worked with IOM on the safe repatriation of several foreign victims.

Prevention

The government made some efforts to raise awareness of human trafficking during the reporting period. In a positive step, Aruba’s justice minister spoke out in January 2011 against human trafficking and, in conjunction, raised awareness about Aruba’s crime victim hotline, which has been staffed by operators trained to identify and refer trafficking victims. The government sustained the functions of an anti-trafficking committee started in 2007. The committee achieved tangible results, for example the rescue of victims, and has been developing a large-scale public awareness campaign, but its operations depended on the personal commitment of the anti-trafficking coordinator and participants as the committee has no funding attached to its operations or projects. Aruba does not have a trafficking rapporteur to monitor and evaluate its anti-trafficking efforts, but Aruba’s anti-trafficking coordinator and director of public prosecutions were required to provide written reports on anti-trafficking results every three months to Aruba’s Justice Minister in preparation for Kingdom justice meetings. The government has formally presented and shared its best practices on regional cooperation, victim identification, and investigation of trafficking cases in several international forums. There were no awareness campaigns specifically targeting potential clients of the sex trade in Aruba in an effort reduce demand for commercial sex acts. There were no known reports of child sex tourism occurring in Aruba or of Arubans participating in international sex tourism, though the government has expressed willingness for training in this area.

Curacao is a source, transit, and destination area for women, children, and men who are subjected to sex trafficking and forced labor. There are indications that child prostitution may be a problem in Curacao and that some of the hundreds of migrant women in Curacao’s regulated and illegal prostitution are victims of forced prostitution. Local authorities believe that migrant workers have also been subjected to forced domestic service and forced labor in construction, landscaping, and shops. Some migrants in restaurants and local businesses may be vulnerable to debt bondage. Foreign trafficking victims originate in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Asia.

The Government of Curacao does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. Despite these efforts, the government has not shown evidence of increasing efforts over the previous year; therefore Curacao is placed on Tier 2 Watch List. Curacaoan authorities identified at least four potential victims of forced labor during the year. This accomplishment, however, was overshadowed by the lack of progress in enacting comprehensive legislation – which remained stalled in parliament – that would prohibit all forms of human trafficking and weak victim protections, as well as the lack of identification of victims of forced or child prostitution, despite a large population of people that are vulnerable to sex trafficking.

Recommendations for Curacao: Enact legislation prohibiting all forms of human trafficking and prescribing punishments commensurate with other serious crimes such as rape; implement formal victim protection measures to guide officials, including health workers, on how to identify victims and how to assist victims of both forced labor and sex trafficking; make a robust and transparent effort to identify and assist potential victims of sex trafficking and forced labor in Curacao.

Prosecution

The government of Curacao demonstrated minimal efforts in the prosecution of trafficking offenders. Curacao’s laws do not appear to cover all forms of human trafficking and prescribed penalties under Curacao’s trafficking-related laws do not appear to be commensurate with those penalties prescribed under separate laws for other serious crimes, such as rape. For another year, comprehensive legislation prohibiting all forms of trafficking remained pending; this greatly hindered officials’ efforts to combat sex trafficking and forced labor in Curacao. The government reported at least two investigations of alleged trafficking offenses, but no prosecutions or convictions of sex or labor trafficking offenders. The government did not fund any anti-trafficking training for government officials during the reporting period, but a government official reportedly distributed a trafficking awareness handbook to law enforcement officials and public prosecutors.

Protection

The government’s victim protection measures were weak. The lack of identification of sex trafficking victims in Curacao, despite the very large vulnerable population of foreign women and girls in prostitution in Curacao’s sex trade, highlights the ineffectiveness of the government’s victim identification measures. In a positive development, law enforcement proactively identified at least four potential victims of forced labor during the reporting period, but it did not identify any victims of sex trafficking. The government reported its use of a formal mechanism to refer identified victims to available services. The government operated multi-purpose shelter facilities and provided health care for victims of trafficking during the reporting period. The identified victims in Curacao declined assistance; however, the government reportedly provided quality assistance to several sex trafficking victims identified in Aruba under the partnership forged through the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ anti-trafficking memorandum of understanding. The government reported encouraging trafficking victims to participate in investigations and prosecutions of trafficking offenders, though no victims chose to participate in prosecutions during the reporting period. The government did not grant temporary or longer-term residency status to any foreign victims of trafficking during the year. The government did not have a policy to protect identified victims from being punished for crimes committed as a direct result of being trafficked.

Prevention

The government did not implement any campaigns to raise public awareness about forced labor and forced prostitution, or aimed at reducing the demand for commercial sex acts. The government did not employ a formal mechanism to monitor its anti-trafficking efforts. The Curacaoan government maintained a multidisciplinary trafficking in persons working group. The government has not identified a child sex tourism problem involving Curacao.

Birmingham, Ala (WIAT)  Dutch film maker Paul Ruven has released a trailer for his film Me and Mr. Jones on Natalee Island. The film will be released to theaters in October.

The "Natalee Island" portion of the title is new and would appear to be a further attempt to capitalize on the Holloway/van der Sloot case by leaving little doubt what the film is about.  Ruven's website for the movie also has the subtitle "What happened with Natalee".  Of course that's a question her family and the world has been asking for more than six years.

Ruven says his film is about an undercover journalist who breaks into Joran Van der Sloot's home on Aruba to force a breakthrough in the Natalee Holloway case.  But it's difficult to imagine how the movie could be any more complicated than the real life scenario.

Natalee Holloway disappeared on a graduation trip to Aruba in 2005.  She was last seen leaving an Oranjestad bar with van der Sloot and two of his friends, the Kalpoe brothers.

Van der Sloot was questioned several times by Aruban authorities but never charged in Natalee's disappearance.  He remains the prime suspect in the case.

Kyle Kingman: The Persistence had no divers on the 7th. Tim Trahan was our diver on the 30th-Dec, but he was out of the country at the time. The Aruban divers were on the police boat, dove from their boat, and returned to their boat.

Kyle Kingman:  I get done in the survey room backing up the ROV dive and head to the back deck to talk to the Polis divers and see what they sampled and see the Polis boat way in the distance heading away fast. John doesn't seem concerned at all, but I am very dissapointed, concerned, and burning inside because I have a feeling that I/we will never know what they took from the trap. That evening I talked to John asking when we plan on recovering the trap. Previously this was part of the talks and plan, but this time he doesn't seem concerned about ever looking into the trap further. After John verbally BASHED me about the trap for what I said to Tim Miller about the sand body-form and that I believed her skirt was under the sand, John pretty much committed himself to the belief the trap wasn't what we were after. This shocked me because it was exactly what we were looking for- a fish trap lost at sea with human remains.

I hope that the Persistence has not done all of this work and gone to all of this expense only to have gotten itself into an arrangement whereby Aruban divers are the ones who actually verify the targets and are the first ones to physically retrieve evidence, with no American divers physically with them. If so, all I can say is I just can't believe this has happened. But surely I am wrong.

I just walked in on the end of an interview with Cole Thompson, author of "Portrait of a Monster", on Fox News around 1:50 EDT.  The only thing I heard was that after Joran beat Stephany up, she was in bad shape but alive for a while; he took a shower and then he murdered her.  It is so hard to grasp the cruelty.

Aruba PM Mike Eman reportedly asked Curacao PM Schotte to put the Venezuela-Aruba-Curacao gas pipeline project on the agenda for PM Schotte’s planned (though as yet unscheduled) meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Spanish conglomerate Repsol S.A. announced that the Perla 1X well off the Venezuela coast was the fifth largest hydrocarbon discovery in 2009. Now this may sound like quite a bit, but Venezuelan production has been declining to the point that the country has started to import natural gas.

The trailer has been released for Dutch director Paul Ruven’s film about the disappearance of US teenager Natalee Holloway on Aruba in 2005.

Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot (23) is still suspected of involvement in the disappearance. He is in prison in Peru facing charges of killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores in Lima last year.

When Stephany was two years old, the family owned a circus.  It was a good, old-fashioned tent circus, complete with trapeze acts and a menagerie of exotic animals.  Stephany loved to be around the elephants, bears, and tigers.  Because her mother, Mariaelena, was the manager, she was able to spend her days hanging out with the carnival workers who shared their strange and curious world with the tiny brown-eyed brunette.  The performers loved Stephany and saw her as a kindred spirit.  Like them, she was a bit mischievous and utterly fearless.

One day, Ricardo received a call from his wife asking him to head over to the main tent.  When he arrived, there was a rehearsal in progress.  He nearly passed out when he saw his two-year-old dressed in a frilly, pink tutu seated atop an elephant making its way into the arena.  It was an unforgettable moment.  Ricardo felt pride tinged with horror as he admired his tiny daughter's courage.  She was all smiles balanced atop the giant pachyderm.  It turned out she'd been practicing for weeks without his knowledge under the direction of the circus's veteran animal trainer.  And his wife was a co-conspirator.

Aruba Hosts INTERPOL Americas Conference

Senior police chiefs attending INTERPOL’s 21st Americas Conference enjoyed three days of meetings at the Westin Aruba Resort, laced with social functions flavored by genuine island hospitality. The conference welcome cocktail party unfolded at Divi Village on the tropical pool deck and was catered the popular Seabreeze restaurant. The party was co-hosted by the Aruba Tourism Authority and by the Ministry of Justice.

Aruba Tourism Authority CEO Ronella Tjin Asjoe-Croes welcomed all delegates to Aruba, inviting them to also enjoy a bit of a vacation while on the island on business and networking opportunities. Aruba’s Minister of Justice and Education Arthur Dowers who also attended the party and served as one of the key note speakers during the conference, mingled with the top policing officials. More than 70 senior law enforcement officials from 32 countries and three international organizations attended. Delegates were also welcomed by the local Commissioner of Police Adolfo Richardson.

Page 200:  My child.  My beautiful daughter.  I can't save her.  It's too late.  Natalee is gone. And second to the great tragedy of losing her is if we fail to learn from what has happened.

I could be any parent in the world.  And no parent should ever go through this experience.  Natalee could be anyone's daughter.  And in these thoughts a new path is made clear.  There is something I can do.  Many people reached out to us, and I can now reach back to them.  It might be too late to save Natalee, but it's not too late to save others.  And it's time now to make good on my pledge to stand before high-school and college students, law enforcement professinals, victims' rights groups, travelers of all ages, and anyone interested in personal safety to share Natalee's story and our hard lessons, so that others might learn from them.

Producers of the film, "Me & Mr. Jones" have released a sneak-peek trailer in anticipation of the movie's upcoming release.

The film tells the fictional story of an undercover journalist, played by actor Robert de Hoog, who visits Aruba five years after Natalee Holloway's disappearance. While in Aruba, de Hoog and an undercover reporter, played by Hanna Verboom, break into Joran van der Sloot's house and make a "shocking discovery," according to a description of the movie on Dutch filmmaker Paul Ruven's website.

Ladies and Gentlemen;

Good morning – BON DÍA - to all of you who have travelled from all over the region and
the world to be here and attend this 21st  INTERPOL Americas Regional Conference.

It is a true pleasure to be here today, and to address such a vast and distinguished
audience. Particularly so, when we are lucky enough to be guests in beautiful Aruba.

I am also glad to see with us today delegates from two other autonomous countries
(separate entities if you will) within the Kingdom of the Netherlands: Curaçao and St
Maarten.

We look very much forward to their one day applying to continue their membership in INTERPOL under their respective country names, just like Aruba did in 1987.

And each time I visit Aruba, it is difficult not to stare in amazement at its landscape, its flawless beaches and its people, whose origins can be traced all over the world.

It is easy, then, to understand why most of us have come to know this island as the place “where happiness lives” and where happiness can be sought by anyone.

However, as police professionals we know that too often the happiness of our co-citizens can become a target - and fall prey to those who choose to break the law.

Unfortunately, the white beaches of Aruba are no exception.  

It was here that Natalee Holloway, an 18-year old student from the United States, was last seen in 2005, before her disappearance.

Five years later, in March 2010, while struggling to cope with that tragedy, Natalee’s
family became prey to a ruthless individual, who allegedly tried to extort money in
exchange for false information on Natalee’s location and fate.

1,700 miles away and only two months later, the happiness of another innocent citizen
was again the victim of a violent crime. It was in Lima, Peru, that a 21-year-old female student was found murdered in a hotel room after a seemingly normal night.

The prime suspect in the Natalee Holloway disappearance case, Joran Van der Sloot, was again the prime police suspect, but this time it was murder.  This time he had already fled the scene of crime, and was feared to have exited the country.

But thanks to rapid coordination between NCB Lima, NCB Santiago de Chile and
INTERPOL’s Command and Control Centre in Lyon, in just 24 hours Joran Van der
Sloot was located, apprehended in Chile and expelled back to Peru.  Let me congratulate the NCBs of the countries involved and our CCC for your close cooperation and fast work.

The use of INTERPOL channels unveiled another disturbing fact.

Joran Van der Sloot is also the person wanted by the US via an INTERPOL Red Notice
for allegedly extorting money from Natalee Holloway’s family only a year before.

Thanks again to the fine efforts of our member countries, our NCBs and INTERPOL’s
General Secretariat, Joran Van der Sloot is in custody and away from innocent people
who could be at risk were he still travelling internationally.

I was so frustrated during Beth's June 23rd interview with Dr. Drew.  That guy needs to take lessons from our Dana.  Beth had so much to share in the short segment of the show that was afforded ... but was unable to get it out.  Dr. Drew kept interrupting.

The parallels between the pathological traits of Joran van der Sloot and Casey Anthony are beyond similar.

Also ... the ongoing abetting environments that have protected these two from being held accountable for their respective wrongdoings in life and therefore ... prevented justice from prevailing for their victims ....
