I know friends of this family.  Cozzie passed himself off as a teen around this family.  I can't help but think there was an element of premeditation in this.

Thanks for bringing this over Kitty. We vacation on the Gulf Coast several times a year and Santa Rosa is one of the prettiest places. I have boys and always insist that they are escorted to and from the condo/beach/pool by an adult. I know it will come to a point where I won't be able to do this anymore...My hubby thinks I am crazy, but stories like this is exactly why I am so scared. We just can not let our guard down anywhere. That is just so sad but there are so many sickos like this kid out there. This guy seems like a serial killer in the making. I also read somewhere that he is not a local. He moved there with his family from Indiana I believe. This is the third case I read about in the last month where one kid killed another. I just don't get it. ::MonkeyMad::

I can not imagine what these parents are going through......They probably vacationed in the area many times and something like this never entered their minds. I pray they find peace and know that none of this was their fault.

So very sad!  This is 30 mins. from my front door and I can remember only ONE broadcast of this information.  Just the day it happened and in general.  Don't wanna spook the money spending tourist now do we?  Nevermind their safety, right?  Please, it's is beautiful here and everyone wants that special summer to tell about forever but our area is rural and riddled with crime, drugs,(meth labs, pill mill fallout) and just the wackadoodles who have been born and raised here!  Just like anywhere else. Just be careful anywhere you go.  Be too careful!

Steven Cozzie pleads not guilty to murder in Courtney Wilkes' death

Cozzie had been living with family off Robert Ellis Drive near where Wilkes’ body was found. He had been kicked out of the house a few weeks ago and was camping out nearby, Adkinson said.

Teresa Carter, who lives at Cassine Garden Townhomes on Cypress Grove Lane nearby, said Friday that she identified Cozzie when deputies showed her his photo.

She said Cozzie was a frequent trespasser and that he had been living around the complex’s swimming pool for a week after his family kicked him out of their home.

“I have to kick him out of here all the time,” Carter said. “He never wears a shirt, always on his skateboard and always trespassing. I thought trespassing was all he was good for.”

Cozzie’s Facebook page says he attended South Walton High School. Karissa Sheffield, 19, who identified herself as Cozzie’s “ex,” said she knew Cozzie had a strained relationship with his stepfather, but learning of his arrest “really shocked me.”

She described Cozzie as “kind of a creep.”
