Ketron sponsors 'Caylee Act' bill Sets a 24-hour time limit on reporting missing child July 12, 2011 MURFREESBORO — In the wake of the Casey Anthony acquittal, state Sen. Bill Ketron is backing legislation to make it a felony for failing to report a missing child. Ketron, R-Murfreesboro, said Tuesday he will sponsor the Senate version of legislation dubbed the "Caylee Anthony Act" filed this week by state Rep. Tony Shipley, R-Kingsport. The bill is designed to strengthen state law and make it a Class E felony for a parent, legal guardian or caretaker to fail or refuse to make a reasonable effort to notify law enforcement about a missing child within 24 hours. ::snipping2:: Title: Re: NEWS Post by: MuffyBee on July 16, 2011, 06:19:17 AM This is a very powerful article imo, and should be read in full.

Bill Ketron ::snipping2:: The Anthony trial has shined a bright light on the gap in many state’s laws, including Tennessee’s, regarding the reporting of a missing child. Florida law does not provide any penalties for this inaction. Likewise, while Tennessee requires reporting, it carries no penalties or “force of law.” Rep. Tony Shipley, R-Kingsport, and I filed legislation this week to change that by making it a Class E felony for a parent, legal guardian or caretaker to not notify law enforcement of a child’s disappearance within 24 hours. That legislation will be considered in January when the General Assembly reconvenes. ::snipping2:: Title: Re: NEWS Post by: trimmonthelake on February 14, 2012, 04:16:58 PM http://www.newschannel5.com/story/16934397/lawmakers-propose-bill-inspired-by-casey-anthony-trial
Lawmakers Propose Bill Inspired By Casey Anthony Trial Posted: Feb 14, 2012 2:55 PM CST Updated: Feb 14, 2012 2:55 PM CST ::snipping2:: NASHVILLE, Tenn.- State lawmakers have begun to debate a bill inspired by last summer's Casey Anthony murder trial. Representative Tony Shipley is pushing a bill that to make it a felony for a parent, legal guardian, or caretaker who does not notify law enforcement about the disappearance of a child within 24 hours. Right now in Tennessee there are no laws on the books that penalize a parent for not reporting a missing child. "Parents need to be responsible for their children. If a child goes missing, they need to report that, to authorities quick enough. Studies show that if a child goes missing for 24 hours, the likelihood of them being found is practically zero," said Shipley. |
