Prayer Vigil Held in Ohio for Missing 22-Year-Old Woman

An Ohio community held a prayer vigil on Friday for 22-year-old Katelyn Markham, who has not been seen since last Saturday, Fox19 News reported.

Markham's fiance, John Carter, spoke at the vigil in Fairfield, asking the crowd to remember her smile and good spirits. Katelyn's father also stepped to the altar thanking everyone for their support.

"[I want to] remind people that she is missing and not to forget," said Markham. "I want her to come home and I expect her to walk through the door any day."

Friends and family are trying everything they can to get Markham's name and face out there through posters, buttons and even a slide show was made for the vigil, with dozen of pictures of Katelyn.

FAIRFIELD — “What happened to Katelyn?”

The question has been consuming police, friends and family since Katelyn Markham was last seen late Saturday night. Authorities say there’s no evidence a crime occurred in her Doshire Drive townhouse, and friends and family say she was happy and looking forward to the life she had planned. Her fiance of one year, John Carter, said she’s too pragmatic and responsible to leave willingly.

Markham’s car, keys and purse were still at the apartment, and nothing was out of place.

On Wednesday — three days after she was reported missing — police secured her townhouse at 5214 Dorshire Drive.

Fairfield police Lt. Kevin Haddix said police aren’t securing the area as a crime scene, but are at a point where they need to look at the apartment to see if anything is missing, from a winter coat, to shoes, to the clothes she was last seen wearing.

Police are investigating any and all possibilities, ranging from she picked up her life somewhere else to a situation where foul play is involved, he said.

“It’s logical to infer foul play is involved, but we still don’t know what happened,” Haddix told Local12.

“Everyone has theories as to how a person would disappear under these circumstances,” he said.

Markham’s future mother-in-law, Karyn Winkler, said the family has its own theories as to what happened the night she went missing.

“Her family and our family are kind of feeling like someone has taken her, someone possibly that she knew,” she said.

Winkler said the family believes Markham answered a knock on the door while she was sleeping — her bed looked like it had been slept in that night, and the only thing missing is her cellphone.

“Katelyn is a very sweet, trusting girl, and she is just someone very easy to get along with. Maybe she had a bad judgment,” Winkler said.

Fairfield police have said there’s no evidence of foul play, and a reasonable explanation for her disappearance hasn’t been found. But while there’s no evidence a crime was committed, Lt. Kevin Haddix said all possibilities are being investigated.

Now, who would know she was home by herself that night?  That's just tooo hinky!  Unless she walked to the festival to meet someone and the BF didn't want to go or wasn't invited I think he was last to see her and.........?  Leaving the doggy in the room, I dunno, kinda weird and the cell phone being turned off????

I agree...definitely someone that knows her and knows that dad wasn't there that night...I have been observing the boyfriend in the news videos and such...he was quick to blame the people at the Sacred Heart Festival...in the 911 call he made it sound like it was next door or that close...but, it is a nine minute walk...close but not THAT close.  Maybe they went and that is why he mentioned it though, it was fresh on his mind. He does seem sincere and is staying active in the searches and vigil and such. She posted earlier that day to Brad about the Festival...

Police and family say they have no idea what could have happened to her. Her fiance, John Carter, said he last saw Markham around 11 or 11:30 Saturday night at her townhouse.

At 12:52 a.m. Sunday, he received a picture of Markham on his cellphone, sent via text message from her phone.


Markham’s purse, keys and car were all there. The only things missing were Markham and her cellphone, which Carter’s mother, Karyn Winkler, said was turned off around 12:45 a.m. Sunday. The GPS tracking device on the phone also had been turned off.

Katlyn has been engaged for 1 yr and they plan on moving to Colorado in Nov but won't get married for 2 yrs till he turns 25...is this strange or what ?

Fairfield Police admitted for the first time on Wednesday that they suspect foul play in the case of a missing woman.  22 year old Katelyn Markham hasn't been seen since Saturday night, when she sent a text message-which included a photo of herself-to her fiance.  She didn't show up for work on Sunday at either of her two jobs-at the Art Institute of Ohio or David's Bridal. That's when family members began to worry and called police.

So..Markham’s purse, keys and car were all there except her cell phone and tracking devise which were was turned off and missing.. Very strange.. If some stranger took Katelyn why the need to take the cell phone then turn it off and turn off the tracking devise. No need to do this..


If Katelyn took off which I don't see either.. Why didn't Katelyn take her car, cell and purse? And why oh why 12:45 am or so when she had work in the morning.. Strange again.. Did someone turn the phone and tracking devise off to make it look as thought Katelyn did .. But why would Katelyn do that let alone a stranger. No need for a stranger to do so if he broke in.. That time of night or early morning the cell phone most likely would not be on the person maybe by a dresser or night stand.

Did the BF deliberately sent the picture from Katelyn cell phone to his to create a timeline to benefit him..

My thoughts exactly Jersey!  I think the BF is putting himself right there in the mix!  His statement about I wouldn't force her to move if she didn't want to go is the clincher for me.  I think LE might be circling him and just looking for evidence.  Does anyone know how close he lives to her and would he be on the same tower as her?  CW, do you know where he lives?  TIA!

There is new information in the search for 22-year-old Katelyn Markham.

A $3,000 reward has been put up for anyone with information regarding the disappearance of the Fairfield woman.

Katelyn was last seen at her townhome on Dorshire Drive by her boyfriend, John Carter, around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, August 13. Carter says he then received a picture text message from her around 11:52 p.m., and reported her missing around 8 p.m. the next day.

Yes, I agree.  Also, after listening to the 911 call I have a question.  Did her bf just drive by to see if her car was there or did he go in? It sounds to me like he drove by and was now heading back, if he only drove by and did not go in yet (he did not mention the order of the inside...no appearance of a break in and so on...) then how would he know that ONLY her cell phone was missing? I would like to know this.   Go back and listen to it and see what you think.

In the boyfriends FB profile picture he is with a dog and looks like he was holding a cigarette
in his left hand. I wonder, if Katelyn smokes also, she may have gone outside before bed for one last smoke with her cell phone and someone grabbed her.

According to the search's organizer, volunteers at another search location uncovered a Converse shoe, a hooped earring, and a phone that matched the description of Katelyn's cell Saturday. All items found were handed over to investigators. Police have not yet confirmed whether any of the items did in fact belong to Markham, but several posts on a Facebook page dedicated to the search for Markham say family members do not believe the items belong to her.

She had actually sent -- after I had left her house, she had actually sent me a couple of actual text messages about things that she wanted me to do to help her out because she had to work and go to school so much. Then -- she normally sends me pictures of things. Her boss at her internship is a really good photographer, and he took some pictures of her that were really, really good and she wanted to show them to me. And that was one of them.

CARTER: It was one of the pictures that he had taken.

So it`s, like, I burnt the message -- or I burnt your documents. And she was, like, Oh, I kind of wanted to be there. And I was, like, Well, I have documents I need to burn, so you can be there when I burn mine. And then she just wrote back a message saying, like, Oh, OK. And then she sent me the picture message, and then that was it.

GRACE: OK, I don`t understand what`s happening. Why were you burning documents?

CARTER: Because she has -- she was going to be moving out of her house. She didn`t want to be bringing all these documents with her, and they were just old, old stuff -- like old bank statements, old things like that. All of her current bank statements, everything like that -- they`re all still in the house. They`re all still there and everything like that, so...

JOHN LUCICH, FMR. CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR: Right. You know, there`s -- it doesn`t make sense, Nancy, and there`s a lot of things that don`t make sense with this. But what they`re going to have to do is take a look -- you know, it`s going to come down to network congestion. I cannot believe that there`s any type of network congestion at that time. That cell phone`s going to be key because number one, just because it was sent from her cell phone doesn`t mean that she sent that text or those pictures.

Number two -- you know, and John`s got to understand that because she`s close to the family like this, people look at him but that`s natural. But that being said, the one thing that just strikes me different is that he tells your reporter he left her -- or last saw her between 11:00 and 11:30, and yet he told the 911 people that he last saw her at midnight. Yep, we are on the same page...guess we posted at the same time.  Very interesting.  That is EXACTLY what it sounds like to me.  I found a guy that she had posted on his page earlier that day...have to go and look for his name.

I have had a bad feeling about the boyfriend since the beginning.  That interview clinches it for me.  Sadly, I think he (the boyfriend) harmed her.  She may have tried to break it off.

No sign of forced entry. Personal items left behind such as purse, keys, etc. would indicate a non-voluntary departure. No signs of struggle. Only thing taken from home was Katelyn and her cell phone. Few women leave their home whether it be permanent or temporary, shared or sole housing without taking their keys particularly when it is late and the only way to get in would be to wake someone up.

I don't know about this 1252am texted photo: is that a normal way to send a photo? What was so special about the photo that no related message was sent such as : Here is the photo you wanted or what do you think of this? I mean its darn near one in the morning and she is sending a photo to a fiance who already knows what she looks like and with whom she was recently speaking.

Why a 911 call immediately pointing to a fair of some sort that was somewhat distant and not particularly threatening despite a reference to weird types of people being there. How did the boyfriend know who was there and why did he point police towards the fair but make no reference as to whether either of them had been there or had discussed going there?

Texas-based EquuSearch will be in Ohio Tuesday to search for Katelyn Markham, who was last seen Aug. 14 at her home in Fairfield, near Cincinnati, Fox 19 reports.
Dozens of volunteers, including friends and family, have so far assisted police in the search for Markham, who was reported missing by her fiance, John Carter. Searchers looked in Fairfield's parks over the weekend and have posted a $5,000 reward for information that leads to finding her.

Carter, 23, was the last person to see Markham before she vanished. Police told ABC Affiliate WCPO that they have few leads in Markham's disappearance. There is no evidence of foul play, but it can't be ruled out, police said.

Texas Equusearch, a mounted search and recovery team, will begin assisting in the search for the 22-year-old woman Tuesday. A digital billboard has been erected in northern Kentucky to aid in the search for Markham. Search parties have been fanning out at parks and wooded areas near the bride-to-be's Fairfield, Ohio, home. Another search is planned for today.

Markham was working at David's Bridal and at a book store. Carter said that he received multiple text messages from Markham after he left her in the early hours of Aug. 14. One of those text messages asked him to burn some of her bank documents.

"She had a big old bag full of stuff from the bank and so she had me go and burn them," Carter said. "Personally, it really was just an innocent little chore she wanted me to do for her and basically I went to a friend's house and I got rid of them."

I think BF sent himself the pic and I think the burning of stuff is hinky too!!  What was he trying to hide?  Papers? Nah!  Burning bloody clothes?  Maybe!  Other evidence? The hunt for Katelyn Markham resumes Thursday when a national organization gathers at Fairfield West Baptist Church for its first official search.

Texas EquuSearch Mounted Search and Recovery Team, which arrived in town Tuesday, is asking volunteers to show up at the church, 5345 Muskopf Road, at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Volunteers must be 18 and bring photo identification. Searchers are asked to wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and appropriate shoes and to bring a sack lunch and enough water for the day-long search.

Am I missing something here?

She texted him to burn her documents AFTER he left her - did he already have them with him for some reason? I don't remember seeing that he went back to get them after receiving the text, so he must have had them in the car with him if he went directly to a friend's house to use the firepit. Strange that she would have given them to him without instructions, then had to text him to tell him to burn them.

Something just isn't right with his story IMO. I think he needed an excuse to burn something (Dear John letter, her phone, clothing) and used her phone to text himself as a way of creating an alibi. I think something happened, he killed her, then had to create a way to show she was alive after he left her. The fact that the photo he received was not of Katelyn, but was of a PHOTO of Katelyn that her boss took of her makes me believe she was not alive when that photo was sent to his phone. I think he was smart enough to know how to turn off the GPS and also smart enough to know about cell phone tower pings. It would be interesting to see the phone messages between the two (did he or she answer any questions like they were in a dialog?) and the ping info. Did he leave his phone at a place close to where his friend lived, go back to Katelyn's and use her phone to call himself? I hope she just needed to get away and will turn up alive, but I am not hopeful.

Has Katelyn's family made any comment regarding the BF? Are they supporting him?

What was the last time anyone other than the BF had any contact with her? All I have seen so far is his timeline as to the last time she was seen that night.

FAIRFIELD - More than 120 people - including Katelyn Markham's fiancé John Carter - gathered early Thursday at Fairfield West Baptist Church for the most intensive search yet for the missing 22-year-old art student.

Founder of Texas Equusearch, Tim Miller, spoke to the crowd before they broke off into groups and asked the volunteers to be careful, to stay together and to use common sense in the search process.

Search coordinator, Dave Rader, instructed team leaders to take smaller groups to specific mapped areas for searching.

The search will follow a process where volunteer will go into staked-off sections of a wooded area and then enter the area in a line. The volunteers will walk directly into the woods for about 25 to 30 feet, then turn around and go back the same way. Rader told team leaders to consider the search as looking for a contact lens.

If anyone finds anything suspicious that requires a second look, they are to yell, "Halt" and get the team leader to come for further inspection.

Texas EquuSearch temporarily suspends search for Katelyn Markham..

The Texas group organizing a massive search for a missing 22-year-old Fairfield girl is temporarily suspending the search for the rest of the weekend.

Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller says the search is being suspended due to the extreme heat in the area and to give searchers time to "decompress." Miller will be returning to Texas for the rest of the weekend to help with a fundraiser for the organization.

Searchers for missing college student Katelyn Markham plan to take a few days off after finding nothing during eight hours of looking during Saturday's brutal heat.

"We covered a lot of ground today, but the heat was a killer," said Tim Miller, founder and director of Texas EquuSearch Mounted Search and Recovery Team, which is coordinating efforts to find the missing Fairfield woman.

"I decided to suspend the search for a few days to let everybody step back and decompress," he said Saturday night.

FAIRFIELD, Ohio - David Markham helps where he can in the search for his missing daughter, Katelyn Markham. Four words sum up how he feels about his eldest: “Very proud, very proud.”

“I just want her to come home—no questions asked. Just come home and act like these three weeks never happened, and let’s just get back with life. She’s got too much to offer, too much to finish that she started and come home and let’s finish it,” said David.

He stood inside the Fairfield West Baptist Church’s gymnasium, the command center, Saturday handing out food and drinks to searchers, hoping for any word about Katelyn.

“My involvement is just staying here at the command center. They do not want me going out. So I just try to fill up waters, help with food, sign people in. Great turnout today, roughly 200 people, horses, dogs, got a lot more of that today. So I think we covered some serious ground, some big heavy-populated areas.”

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) -

The search for Katelyn Markham will resume on Thursday.

Officials with Texas EquuSearch, a mounted search an recovery team, say they will be back in town on Wednesday after spending Labor Day at home in Texas.

Tim Miller, director and founder of Texas EquuSearch, says volunteers and searchers need time to decompress. They will spend Wednesday regrouping and preparing for a search on Thursday.

Searching was suspended over the weekend due to the excessive heat.

The command center for Thursday's search will be located at the Fairfield West Baptist Church, 5345 Muskoph Road. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and bring a photo ID. They are also asked to bring their own water and lunch and dress appropriately for searching.

Katelyn Markham's friends and family are trying to figure out why flyers of the missing 22-year old are disappearing.

"Some places in Fairfield, they're being ripped down, I'm not sure which places exactly, and some in Hamilton around the courthouse," said Krista Snyder, friend of Katelyn's.

Officials with the City of Fairfield say city workers are not responsible for taking down the fliers and it's unclear who is responsible. Snyder says fliers started disappearing two weeks ago and it's hurting the efforts to bring Katelyn home.

"They're hurting her face being shown," said Snyder. "We want her out there as much as possible. We just want to bring her home safe.

Despite rain and chilly temperatures, over a hundred volunteers turned out Thursday to search for Katelyn Markham.

Markham, 22, was reported missing on Aug. 14.

Texas EquuSearch organized Thursday's search after spending a few days regrouping and planning what to do next.

Some of the volunteers came from hundred of miles away.

Earlier this week, Jan and Alvin Tipps loaded up their van and connected their trailer to travel 26 hours from Texas to help find a woman they've never met.

"Tim (Miller, the founder of Texas EquuSearch) had been up here searching before and he called us Sunday and said, 'Are you all ready to go on a trip?' I said, 'Yep where are we going?'" said Jan Tipps.

Texas EquuSearch in no way supports any of the negative statements being put on any blogs, Facebook or any websites about any possible persons of interest, cell phone towers or any part of the investigation into Katelyn’s disappearance.  This kind of behavior is doing nothing but hindering law enforcement’s investigation and distracting search efforts.  This behavior will not be tolerated.  Anyone involved in this activity will be banned from any future Texas EquuSearch searches or functions.  We have one fact – Katelyn is missing!

The evidence seems to show Katelyn grabbed her cellphone and answered the door to talk to someone or let someone inside.. she apparently wasn't planning on leaving.  Her purse, keys, and dog were left inside.  Her car was still in the lot.  Her cell phone was never found. "If I believed in alien abductions that's about the only answer that sounds right..like vanished in thin air."

Markham still wears his "Katelyn Come Home" wristband, but in a year he no longer believes that will happen.  "Reality is, I don't think that's going to be a positive outcome.  People still say she'll walk in some day and say I'm sorry I did this to you.  I want that to happen but I don't think it's going to happen."

There have been distractions..such as the arrest of Gurpreet Kang for a sexual assault of a Miami University student last year. He worked at a convenience store where Katelyn sometimes shopped.  And there's been attention on Katelyn's fiance John Carter, who Facebooked the result of a lie detector test, saying, "I didn't do well."

CEDAR GROVE, Ind. —The man who found the remains of Katelyn Markham says it didn't appear anyone tried to hide her body
Andy Hicks told WLWT News 5's Brian Hamrick that he was searching for scrap metal along Big Cedar Creek in Franklin County on April 7 when he found a human jawbone.
 
He said he then saw a skull inside a Kroger bag and some other bones nearby. Hicks said there was some hair, but it appears that the remains were almost completely decomposed.

Hamrick said that the woman who owned the land told him that she had called police a couple of years ago about people who were dumping trash on her property.

Gurpreet Kang was questioned as he was led into court Thursday on a sexual assault charge. Police said Kang's DNA matched what was found on a woman who was raped in April 2011 in Oxford.

Police said Kang was arrested several weeks ago in Detroit while he was trying to cross into Canada.
"I feel sorry for the victim in Oxford. That's a terrible tragedy in and of itself," James Carter said.

CINCINNATI –  Authorities turned their focus Thursday to investigating the cause of death for a southwest Ohio woman whose skeletal remains were found in Indiana 20 months after she went missing.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Noel Houze said police in the two states want to hear from anyone who has information about 21-year-old Katelyn Markham.

"Somebody out there knows what happened," Houze said Thursday. Indiana police said late Wednesday that remains found Sunday along a creek had been identified as those of Markham, reported missing to Fairfield, Ohio, police on Aug. 14, 2011. He said foul play is suspected, but police and coroner's investigations will be needed to determine cause of death.

"We don't know that for sure, either," Houze said.

On Thursday, 9 On Your Side anchor Clyde Gray sat down for a one-on-one interview with David Markham, who says the recent events "bring closure" but also "open a new chapter" in the mystery of what happened to his then-21-year-old daughter on August 13, 2011.

David Markham told Gray that he doesn't think his daughter died a "natural death."

"I don't believe Katelyn ended up in that spot by herself," he said.

The grieving father also says he plans to go to the site near Cedar Grove, Ind., where his daughter was found once police finish searching the area for clues. He also said he'd like to thank Andy Hicks, the man who discovered Katelyn Markham's remains Sunday, for bringing him closure.

Memorial honors Katelyn Markham

While Katelyn Markham’s body remains in Indianapolis to be studied for evidence to determine how she died, friends and family now have a place to pay their respects.

Her father, Dave Markham of Fairfield, put the finishing touch – planted flowers – on Sunday around a wooden cross and plaque that was erected over Memorial Day weekend.

The inscription on the plaque reads: “Lost is not alone. No Longer Lost, Never Alone.”
The cross was fashioned by a Cincinnati woodworker who wanted to remain anonymous, he said. Equusearch, the Texas-based search group that now has an Ohio chapter, was looking for someone to erect crosses for several adults and children it had searched for and found, Markham said.

“He’s a good woodworker with a big heart,” Markham said of the man who created the memorial.
