FBI Joins Search of New Mexico Lake for Bodies of Sex-Torture Victims

Published October 10, 2011

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –  Police have reopened the unsolved case of an Albuquerque woman missing for 16 years after authorities received new information connected to a man who boasted in writings that he was responsible for around 40 victims.

Albuquerque police are set to join FBI agents and New Mexico State Police on Tuesday in a search around Elephant Butte Reservoir and nearby caves where they believe David Parker Ray may have buried some of his claimed victims.

Police suspect that 22-year-old Jill Troia, who disappeared in 1995, is among the possible victims buried somewhere in vast terrain of the reservoir in southern New Mexico.

 ::snipping2::
Ray was arrested in 1999 after a naked woman wearing only a dog collar and chain fled his home. She told police she had been tortured by Ray, and investigators later found surgical tools and video cameras inside his 20-foot-long white trailer that he dubbed a "toy box."

He was initially charged with 37 counts involving three women -- the woman who fled naked, a Colorado woman who was tortured in 1996 and another woman.

 ::snipping2::
He died in prison in 2002. No bodies have ever been located after a number of searches in the area around the reservoir.

Glenda Jean Ray pleaded no contest to kidnapping charges in 2001 and was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison, plus five years of probation in connection to her father's sex torture case.

Ray's girlfriend at the time of his arrest, Cynthia Lea Hendy, told police that Ray disposed of bodies -- both men and women in ravines and in Elephant Butte Reservoir. She was sentenced in 2000 to 36 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to accessory and kidnapping charges and agreed to cooperate with investigators to avoid a life prison term.

Authorities didn't release any other names of possible victims. However, FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said authorities are reinvestigating cases of missing women from the time period to see if they are connected.

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M.

Authorities will be looking for clues into the disappearance of Jill Troia, who vanished 16 years ago. Police said Troia disappeared after she got into a fight with her girlfriend, Glenda Jean Ray, who is Ray’s daughter. Troia disappeared late Sept. 30 or early Oct. 1, 1995. She was last seen at the Frontier Restaurant in Albuquerque.
 ::snipping2::
“It's been 16 years. Every September gets really hard. It's just overwhelming in your thoughts,” Troia said. “You're just so hopeful, and just praying again that this really isn't happening to us, and she's going to call us, and we waited for that for a long time.

(me: Don't you just love KARMA) ::MonkeyCool::

Ray died in 2002 from a heart attack only eight months after being sentenced.

I read this book and Ray and Hendy were sick, sick disturbed people.  The book didn't play up Ray's daughter's involvement in his crimes at all.  In fact, I don't even remember her at all in it.  What I do know is these poor women he picked on were down on their luck, hard partying types that could go missing and not be missed for a while in an area deeply clouded with meth.  So sad cause no one would be looking for them and he got away with so much.  I'm 100% sure there are many more victims living and not.  Cindy Hendy should have had a sentence like Ray's.  Wonder how much his daughter does know?  I hope LE gets to the bottom of this and brings missing loved ones back to their family for a proper burial.  Ray held a position at work which allowed him a vehicle and vast amounts of land to bury and hide many people over 20 years!!!

Human bones discovered at Elephant Butte Lake

The search for possible David Parker Ray victims resumes Tuesday after a visitor discovered human bones at Elephant Butte.

The visitor found pieces of a human femur and smaller leg bones about a month ago. The bones were sent to the state Office of the Medical Investigator for further analysis. It is not known how old the bones are, but officials say they were extremely weathered.

FBI officials say the visitor called agents to report his discovery after seeing last week's news coverage of the Parker Ray sex torture case search at the lake.

A report from 2001

Videotape shown in retrial for David Parker Ray
Published: Tuesday, April 10, 2001
ESTANCIA, N.M. {AP}— A videotape shown to jurors in a sex-torture trial Tuesday shows a 27-year-old woman strapped to a medical-type bench, her eyes and mouth covered with duct tape, while David Parker Ray circles the bench, occasionally stroking her or adjusting the straps.

At first, as he touched her, she rolled her head from side to side, but then later her head stopped rolling. He then unstrapped her wrists, and she pulled her arms across her chest, almost hugging herself, as he continued to move around the bench.

Ray, 61, is being retried on 12 charges of abducting and sexually torturing the Colorado woman near Elephant Butte Lake in 1996. His first trial in Tierra Amarilla last summer ended in a hung jury.

The woman wiped away a steady stream of tears as she and jurors watched the videotape. that showed her strapped to the bench. Jurors showed no reaction.

The woman testified Monday in Ray's retrial that she was tortured with sexual devices but couldn't scream for help because her mouth was taped.

"I was scared. I didn't know what they were going to do. I wanted to go home," the woman told jurors.

Wow!! Thanks so much for the book information Nut. I knew you might be on this like we say here "like white on rice", lol. Thanks again for the info.!!

I have seen that you had an interest in the "unidentified and missing" from the porch light site. I hope these new searches can bring closure in those cases and finally bring peace to the families of missing loved ones.
