GLENDALE, AZ - The ABC15 Investigators have learned the mother of a missing 5-year-old Glendale girl has a criminal history.

According to court documents , Jerice Hunter served prison time in California for "injury to a child."

Police are not calling Hunter a suspect or even a person of interest in her child's disappearance.

Glendale police Officer Tracey Breeden said police are aware of Hunter's criminal history, but declined to provide specific details, saying, "our primary goal remains focused on Jahessye's safe return."

Hunter pleaded no contest to four counts of causing injuries to her children. In the words of the California trial court that heard this case, the records state Hunter "never ever should have had children."

In October 2005, the children's grandmother called police after she noticed a cut on her 3-year-old granddaughter's leg. Three other children in the home also had cuts and scars on their bodies.

Records show Hunter's 14-year-old son told police she had repeatedly punched him and whipped him with sticks over a two-year period.

Police Scramble to Find Missing 5-Year-Old Arizona Girl

Published October 13, 2011 | Associated Press

The parents of a 5-year-old Arizona girl who has been missing for two days were not under suspicion and police had no evidence of a kidnapping, but investigators said Thursday they weren't ruling out anything.

Jahessye Shockley (pronounced like "Jesse") was last seen by her three older siblings around 5 p.m. Tuesday after their mother went out to run an errand. Police suspect the girl left through the front door of her home in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale.

The girl's father does not live with the family and there were no fights between the parents over custody, said Glendale police officer Tracey Breeden.

The longer Jahessye remains missing, the more concerned police grow.

These booking photos of Jahessye's mom, Jerice Hunter and the child's biological dad, George Shockley, were taken after the pair was arrested in October of 2005 in northern California by Vallejo police.

The couple was booked for what they call in California inflicting injury on a child, felony child abuse.

Police tell us at least three kids were put in protective custody as a result of that arrest.

Surely the children were not with their "mother."  If so, someone besides the "mother" failed them.

Jahessye's mother and father have troubled past

PHOENIX (KPHO) -

As the search goes on for 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley, who was last seen Tuesday afternoon in Glendale, we're finding out more tonight about the family.

Each time we have seen Jahessye's mom she has been crying and appears distraught.

Police tell CBS 5 she is cooperating fully with investigators. They also say a search of the apartment where the little girl lives with her mom and three siblings turned up no evidence of violence or foul play.

But CBS 5 News uncovered a troubling past of both little Jahessye's mother and father.

These booking photos of Jahessye's mom, Jerice Hunter and the child's biological dad, George Shockley, were taken after the pair was arrested in October of 2005 in northern California by Vallejo police.

The couple was booked for what they call in California inflicting injury on a child, felony child abuse.

[ex]More than 100 law enforcement personnel and volunteers are searching for Jahessye Shockley in Glendale, Ariz.

According to Glendale Police, an Amber Alert was issued Tuesday evening when the 5-year-old girl went missing from her family's home in an apartment complex near Glendale Road and 45th Avenue.

It was around 5 p.m. when Jahessye's mother returned from running a quick errand and discovered the girl missing, said Officer Tracey Breeden, a Glendale Police Department spokesperson.

Jahessye had been at home with her three siblings, ages 6, 9 and 12.

Breeden said the mother said that when she got home, the front door was open, but Jahessye wasn't inside and the siblings did not know where she was.

The mother searched around the apartment complex and called 911.

No one else lived at the home with the mother and her children. [/ex]

:( :( :(

[ex]A 24-hour tip line has been set up, and anyone with information is asked to call 623-930-HELP (4357).

Police have been following up on all tips they have received, but so far none have led to Jahessye's whereabouts.

"We're taking it one day at a time, trying to prioritize the tips they're receiving", said Breeden.

Jahessye is African-American, approximately 3 feet 5 inches tall, 55 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, and had her hair in long ponytail. [/ex]

I'll have to check out how to post an image - this little girl is so adorable.  I hope and pray she's found soon!

Amber Alert for Jahessye Shockley canceled, girl still missing
October 14, 2011

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Amber Alert for a missing 5-year-old girl in Glendale has been canceled.

The reasoning for the cancellation was standard procedure.

Bart Graves, Department of Public Safety PIO, said Friday morning the Amber Alert had been issued for 48 hours and there were unable to locate Jahessye Shockley.

"Normally Amber Alerts are put out for a short period of time," Graves said of the cancellation. "This has been a couple of days now and there's no new information developed."

Just because the Amber Alert has been called off, that doesn't mean the investigation has been stopped or that the Amber Alert could be reissued.

"We conferred with the Glendale PD, the investigation is still ongoing into her disappearance but until there is new information, more descriptive information we will take down the Amber Alert at this time," Graves said.

Police took down their command post where Shockley went missing Tuesday night. Detectives have searched dumpsters and pools, but came up empty handed with any new evidence.

"Once we get new information, for instance a better description, a more exact description of the vehicle, we will reissue it," Graves said.

GLENDALE, AZ - Despite canceling an Amber Alert for missing 5-year-old Jahessye Shockley, Glendale police are continuing what they called a “behind the scenes investigation.”

After a two-day search, police on Friday scaled back and removed their massive mobile command center from the corner of Glendale and 45th avenues.

Instead, detectives were seen roaming the neighborhoods, including the Autumn Leaves Apartments where Jahessye went missing.

ABC15 was there when detectives knocked at the apartment where Jahessye and her mother Jerice Hunter live.

Her uncle, Johnny Johnson, said Hunter has had enough with media exposure since young Jahessye was reported missing Tuesday afternoon .

According to Johnson, Hunter is in desperate need of rest after days without sleeping and eating.

“She’s not a mean person,” he added.

 ::snipping2::
Somia Abdelgdir, through a translator, said detectives asked her about the day Jahessye went missing.

Abdelgdir, who lives in the apartment across the way, said she helped Hunter look for Jahessye shortly after she realized the little girl was missing.

Abdelgdir drove Hunter, who is eight months pregnant, around the neighborhood and remembers Hunter crying and being stressed out.

GLENDALE, AZ - The grandmother of a 5-year-old Glendale girl who has been missing since Tuesday is revealing new details about the family.

Shirley Johnson, Jhessye Shockley's grandmother, spoke with ABC15 Monday and said she feels like she is being kept in the dark about the investigation.

"You know as much as I do and you are not even a relative," she said.

Johnson said that her daughter Jerice Hunter, who is Jhessye's mother, is pregnant and on bed rest.

Johnson said police have removed three other children from the family's home near 45th Avenue and Glendale and placed them in foster care.

"I don't know where they are," she said. She said she feared that the separation is just another distraction to finding the girl.

 ::snipping2::
Johnson said she is convinced that someone took Jhessye and is holding out hope that she will see her again. She said she is putting up her own money as a reward for information.

Is this the same grandmother that reported the abuse that put Jerice Hunter in prison?

GLENDALE, AZ - Glendale police could soon be searching the city's landfill for a missing 5-year-old girl.

Police say they've been checking out every tip, but none has led them to find little Jhessye Shockley.

Jhessye's mother reported her missing around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11.
 ::snipping2::
Meanwhile, Silent Witness and the City of Glendale are offering a combined $11,000 reward to help find Jhessye.

Coombs said investigators worked through the weekend to examine every interview, every tip, and every contact during the search for the little girl.

"Detectives are continuing to work diligently on the safe return of Jhessye Shockley," Coombs said.

ABC15 was told Hunter stayed home Wednesday night, while Jhessye’s grandmother, Shirley Johnson, and others try to keep the girl’s memory alive.

 ::snipping2::
Johnson admits finding her missing 5-year-old granddaughter isn't even her biggest concern.

 ::snipping2::
Earlier this week, CPS took Jhessye's three siblings out of the home.

“They said one kid is not eating, the other kids are just distraught,” Johnson said.

“CPS took the kids and said they were in danger,” Johnson explained.

Johnson said CPS won't give her any specific details. But, ABC15 uncovered court documents that show Jhessye's mother has a criminal history that includes child abuse.

 ::snipping2::
“It's her race and it isn't their child and she doesn't have blue eyes and blonde hair,” Johnson said.

Glendale Police Officer Tracey Breeden said that's absolutely not true.

Police said they no longer think the little girl wandered out of her home.

On Wednesday, they upped the reward to $11,000 dollars.  That’s on top of the $5,000 dollar reward offered by Jhessye’s grandmother.

Jhessye Shockley's cousin says missing child was abused

Lisa Vance, from Glendale, says she helped raise Jhessye for four years while Jhessye's mother was in prison.

She tells ABC15 Jhessye was an intelligent girl with dreams of becoming a ballerina.

"You cannot help but love her. I miss everything about her," Vance said.

Jerice Hunter, Jhessye's mother, has a record of child abuse , and was sentenced to jail in California back in 2006. Vance says Hunter took Jhessye back last year when she was released.

"We did not give her back willingly," Vance said. "We didn't think Jerice was ready. She needed to get to know Jhessye. Jhessye was two weeks old when she left."

Vance, who does not have contact with Hunter anymore, alleges Hunter abused Jhessye.

"Absolutely," she said. "At our functions, and get-togethers, Jhessye was not herself. I've seen marks that led me to believe she was being abused in Jerice's home."

ITA.....I am so sick and tired of seeing this over and over again. This child should have never been allowed back in that woman's care. This little angel didn't even know who the heck this woman was. Her "mother" was in prison since she was 2 weeks old. This wench just wanted a check, she had no bond with this baby. This little one should have been starting kindergarten. Why take her out of the only home that she had ever known. LE needs to pull this woman in (pregnant or not) and put real pressure on her. She knows exactly where that baby girl is. Sorry for the rant... ::MonkeyMad::

I agree.  And it's typical of the media to focus on white children, pretty teenagers and beauty queens that go missing.  What a shame.  But in this case, in which the spotlight is on baby Lisa, I'd like to point out that she's also getting more attention because of her age.  There's something about a missing infant or baby that captures the public's imagination and elevates their emotions to a higher degree.

Regardless, I hope that they are both found safe.  Poor dears.

I think the fact that the parents have records of child abuse is a big reason why this story isn't hitting the major news as other cases.  Common sense tells you to look close to home given the history of this family.

IMO, grandma needs to leave the media spotlight and go confront her daughter.  There is where she's going to find the answer to her questions.

Missing girl's mother claims media is endangering family

GLENDALE, AZ - A vigil was held Saturday evening for 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley who has been missing now for 11 days from her Glendale apartment.

But moments prior to the vigil, Jhessye Shockley's mother made some angry statements that seemed to contradict their prior attempts to get more media attention to the case.

"You put all this negative media out there. I was trying to get away from my ex-husband. Now he knows exactly where to find me. I hope you're happy," Jerice Hunter lashed out as we attempted to ask her about her daughter.
[/u]
She would not clairfy or elaborate further except to say, "You have endangered my children by letting George Shockley know where we are."

The comments may seem a bit confusing considering the investigation and  the push the family has made in recent days to get the story in network news

So she tries to say she's not getting enough media attention because Jahessye is black and in the same breath claims she's getting too much attention?  Can't have it both ways.

This is exactly why this case isnt' getting as much attention.  When the parents have records and act guilty people assume the child is dead.

Sterilization.  I like that idea.

You know, it really pains me to see hoops that adoptive parents have to jump through to prove that they are fit to adopt a child.  Yet anyone, and I mean ANYONE, can just have a baby any time they feel like it regardless of their mental health status, criminal history, finances, etc.  It's rather odd that you need a license to drive a car but not to have a baby.  I'm not suggesting that people should have to apply to breed nor am I saying that breeders should be screened, but I think it should be required that all new parents take some sort of parenting classes.

Missing Girl's Mom: 'Bring My Baby Home'
Police, family at odds as girl remains missing
October 24, 2011

PHOENIX - Nearly two weeks after a 5-year-old girl seemingly vanished outside her suburban Phoenix home, police were no closer Monday to figuring out what happened to her as her family criticized the investigation.

Jahessye Shockley has been missing since Oct. 11 after police believe she wandered from her apartment in Glendale, outside Phoenix, while her mother was running an errand. The girl's three older siblings were the last to see her.

Police have no evidence, suspects or promising leads, but the case points to a kidnapping because they found no trace of her after combing a 3-mile radius around her home.

"This little girl doesn't just fall off the face of the earth," Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs said Monday.

More than 100 officers and volunteers have looked in pools, garbage bins, and shrubs, interviewed and searched the homes of registered sex offenders in the area, and stopped at every door to spread news about the disappearance.

But Jahessye's family said that they don't believe that police have given her disappearance enough attention because she's black and her mother has a criminal history.

"We feel that law enforcement is not active in finding Jahessye and that they're more active in persecuting me instead of finding out where she is," said Jerice Hunter, Jahessye's mother.

In October 2005, Hunter and her then-husband George Shockley were arrested in California in a child abuse case. Hunter pleaded no contest to corporal punishment and served about four years in prison before she was released on parole in May 2010. Hunter's oldest child, 14 at the time, told police that his mother routinely beat the children.

George Shockley is a convicted sex offender and is still in a California prison.

Hunter condemned members of the media at a demonstration for her daughter on Monday at the state capitol in Phoenix, saying that they're too focused on her past and that she didn't know Shockley was a sex offender until his arrest.

State Child Protective Services removed Hunter's three other children from her home following Jahessye's disappearance but refused to say why.

Glendale police say that Hunter, who is eight months pregnant, is not a suspect and that police had nothing to do with the state's decision to take the children.
Hunter was joined by about a dozen family and friends at the demonstration, during which they held up signs with Jahessye's photo and begged for Gov. Jan Brewer's attention on the case.

Coombs said that Jahessye's race has no effect on their efforts to find the girl and that the department has treated her family the same as they would treat any family in a missing child case -- by repeatedly interviewing them for new details.

He said detectives are aware of Hunter's criminal record, but "it cannot cloud the issue or make them tunnel-visioned." "They have to keep an open mind and look at every detail that comes in," he said.

Coombs has repeatedly said that the case is the department's No. 1 priority, that dozens of investigators were working the case and that the department would not stop until she's found. Detectives were focused on following tips from the public and going over the information they've collected so far, he said.

Coombs said that it's very important for the public to realize that Jahessye may not look the same as she does in pictures of her that have been released.

"If I were an abductor or someone who has possession of her and I want to remain anonymous and I want to move about easily, I would alter her appearance as much as I could, even to the point of making her look like a little boy," he said.

Jahessye's case has drawn comparisons to the 1999 case of another Arizona girl, 11-year-old Mikelle Biggs. Mikelle vanished on Jan. 2, 1999, as she waited for an ice cream truck near her family's home in Mesa; all that was left behind was a bicycle and two quarters. She remains missing.

I vote that your post be awarded "Best post of the week"!!!  ::monkeywine2::

I just started letting my 13 year old (almost 14) stay home if I ran to the store. But even at that age, it makes me very nervous.  I call him 3-4 times while I am at Target. He has strict rules not to open the door to anyone and knows what to do if the house were to catch fire. I do trust him, but I would not leave our youngest (8 years old) for him to care for while I am gone. I may be a little paranoid but I will not go against my mothers intuition. It has never failed me. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Mom Begs for Missing 5-Year-Old’s Return at Rally

 ::snipping2::
Jerice Hunter urged whoever has her daughter, Jhessye Shockley, to drop her off someplace safe, saying, “Please bring my baby back home…She’s scared. She’s scared. Please, I know she’s scared.”

When asked by a KNXV reporter if she had harmed Jhessye, though, Hunter responded loudly, “"It is very unfair to ask me that. Do I look like I hurt my daughter? Do I look like I hurt my daughter? Do I look like I hurt my daughter?"

She claimed that Glendale police have not done enough to find Jhessye, who she reported missing two weeks ago when she returned from running an errand and the girl was gone from their apartment. Monday’s rally was intended to raise public awareness of the case.

“My baby could be anywhere by now because they refused to believe that this black woman didn’t do nothing to her child,” Hunter said.

Hunter also criticized the media for bringing up her past, which includes pleading no contest to charges of causing injuries to her older children in California in 2006. At the time, she admitted to whipping one of her kids with an extension cord, according to court documents obtained by KNXV.

 ::snipping2::
During Monday’s rally, Hunter complained about the decision by Child Protective Services to remove her other children from her home.

“You done locked my other kids away like primates in a laboratory,” she said.
::MonkeyNoNo::
Jhessye’s grandmother, Shirley Johnson, attended a hearing on custody of the children on Monday, according to KPNX, but she was not allowed to discuss what happened afterward.

Johnson and Hunter have alleged that police and the media are not devoting enough resources to Jhessye’s case because she is black. Police spokesman Sgt. Brent Coombs adamantly denied that allegation last week, saying authorities do not care about a missing child’s race or nationality. They just want to find her.

I was driving through AZ the day this child went missing.  There were Amber Alerts all along the highway.  When we stopped for gas and snacks, there were printouts at the cash registers asking if anyone had seen this child.

This is so sad.

I'm paranoid with my kids too.  My hubby insisted that I start letting them stay home alone for brief periods.  But, I'm on the cell with them the whole time so it's almost like I'm there.  They also aren't allowed to unlock the doors, let the blinds up, answer the door, or tell anyone on the landline that I'm anywhere other than the toilet.  Also, my neighbors (within seeing distance) have been alerted to what's going on.  lol

It sounds extreme, but really, times are not what they used to be even in rural areas.

So she tries to say she's not getting enough media attention because Jahessye is black and in the same breath claims she's getting too much attention?  Can't have it both ways.

This is exactly why this case isnt' getting as much attention.  When the parents have records and act guilty people assume the child is dead.

"I feel like they're [the media] covering me instead of my daughter because it's a juicy story for them and they want to get ratings," Hunter said at the Capitol Monday. "Because I wouldn't speak to them initially, they decided they would draw me out by demonizing me."

Hunter, who is eight months pregnant, said she returned home from running an errand to find Shockley gone. Police say Hunter is not a suspect, and they don't know if the girl walked out of the home on her own or if she was abducted.

Child protective services took custody of Hunter's three other children the day after Shockley was reported missing. The children's grandmother, Shirley Johnson, was in juvenile court Monday seeking to take them home with her.

Relatives of missing Arizona girl march on state Capitol..

 ::snipping2::

According to 2006 court documents, Hunter was “accused of torturing her 7-year-old daughter and of causing corporal injuries to three of her other children,” ABC News reports.

A son told police that he and his siblings received beatings several times a week for years, according to ABC.

Hunter’s ex-husband, George Shockley, also took part in the abuse, ABC cites police as saying. George Shockley is serving time for a sex offender conviction.

Jhessye Shockley's cousin says missing child was abused

(video at the link also)

Posted: 10/21/2011

 ::snipping2::

Jhessye Shockley's aunt wants police to look at everyone, including girl's mom
October 28, 2011

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- In a reversal of what they've been saying, some members of Jhessye Shockley's family now seem to be wondering if the 5-year-old's mother could have had something to do with the little girl's disappearance.

 ::snipping2::

Until now, the family has insisted that Jhessye's mom, Jerice Hunter, was not involved in the disappearance of Jhessye.

Hunter served time in a California prison in 2006 on charges of child abuse. She was released last year.

Over the weekend, Jhessye's grandmother, Shirley Johnson, and aunt, Tammy Hunter appeared on CNN. Johnson was staunch in her support of her daughter.

"Are you sure in your heart of hearts that Jhessye's mother has nothing to do with her disappearance?" the anchor asked.

"I feel comfortable saying that," Johnson answered. "I just don't think she' capable of that, to do anything to her child. I just can't see that."

Earlier in the week, Hunter herself expressed anger with the media when a reporter asked her if she hurt Jhessye.

"It's very unfair for you to ask me that," she said. "Do I look like I would hurt my daughter? Do I look like I would hurt my daughter?"

In something of an about face, Josie Hunter, another of Jhessye's aunts, appeared on Headline News Thursday evening and said she could not say definitively whether Hunter was involved in whatever happened to Jhessye.

"If the police find evidence of whoever did it, including Jerice … I feel whoever did it should be held accountable," she said. "I, right now, cannot say that I know for sure that Jerice did this or anything like that. I want them [police] to look at everyone. She does have a past …."

GLENDALE, Ariz.--Three weeks after 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was reported missing from her Glendale apartment, police still have few solid leads, but there are now new questions about when the little girl was last seen.

Glendale police say Jhessye was absent from kindergarten for a "period of time" because of "what can best be described as a communicable illness," in the days before her disappearance.
 ::snipping2::

Hunter came and went from her apartment on Tuesday but did not want to speak with reporters.

She gave birth to another baby last week, but that baby was removed from her custody by Child Protective Services, according to a relative.

Hunter's other three children are also in CPS custody.
 ::snipping2::
Investigators say they are still working to determine an appropriate time for a polygraph test to be administered to Hunter.

Sgt. Coombs said a seasoned criminal investigator with homicide experience is now leading this case.

hmm...so, LE has to determine exactly what day someone outside of the family actually saw this child.  She could've been gone for days before the initial report.

was going to post the same thing! who knows when this child disappeared? she could have been missing for some time before mom reported her missing. Have the older children been questioned?

Can you imagine how this abuser has probably threatened those kids up to the day that they were taken away.  They're probably scared to death.

Take this with a grain of salt, but early on, on the FB page to help find Jhessye, a family member stated that the older kids were told to clean the back yard (how big could it be in an apartment?) and that Jhessye was "locked in" the house while mother dearest ran errands. The kids in the backyard also had no way to "enter the house"....I will try to find the post again, so I can back up what I read. But either way, I think the truth will come out and hopefully soon.

Relative Doubts Mom of Missing Jhessye Shockley

The great aunt of an Arizona girlmissing for almost a month said Tuesday that she is beginning to suspect that the child’s mother could be responsible for her disappearance.

Brenda Hunter told KNXV that she still supports her niece, Jerice Hunter, but she is concerned by reports that the mother of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley has not taken a lie detector test. Relatives also told the station that Jerice has not answered their phone calls for two weeks.

Jerice Hunter reported Jhessye missing on October 11 after she claimed the girl disappeared from herGlendaleapartment while she was out running an errand. Police have not identified any suspects in the case.

Asked if she believed Jerice had anything to do with Jhessye’s disappearance, Brenda said, “To be honest with you, I’m just going to be straight out, yes I do.”

She suggested the possibility that Jerice “hit her too hard and just didn’t realize it, you know, and then won’t admit it.”

Brenda Hunter also questioned why Jerice is not out actively searching for Jhessye.

“I would be out here night and day, marching, looking for my child,” she said. “And she’s not behaving like a mother would, being that her child is missing.”

Relatives have told KNXV that Jerice is scheduled to take a lie detector test on Thursday, but police denied that claim. ::snipping2::

Mom of missing Jhessye: 'I'm a good mother'

GLENDALE, AZ (KPHO) -

Jerice Hunter insists she's a good mother despite her past conviction and four-year prison stint for child abuse.

"I'm not going to condone my behavior in the past," said the mother of missing 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley in the second installment of an exclusive interview with Hunter. "I did spank my daughter and I felt like afterwards, 'Yes, I did go overboard.'"
 ::snipping2::

Court records show Hunter was accused of using an extension cord and belt to discipline her older children, leaving bruises and open wounds.  The Glendale mother says she did it to keep her kids on the straight and narrow.

"I come from a culture to where if you're stealing from people, they will kill you, they will hurt you."

Hunter admits that when she looks back on using a belt and an extension cord that "was severe."

"But that's the way I was raised," she said. "And I have learned since then that just because I was raised a certain way does not mean that's necessarily the best way to raise my children."  ::snipping2::

le police released the following statement on the investigation.

It's very important to the Glendale Police Department to reassure the community that our investigators are still working every day, diligently, on the disappearance of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley from her Glendale home on October 11, 2011. We are encouraging anyone listening, no matter where you reside, to be hyper-aware of your surroundings. It's important to look for and report anything out of the ordinary involving a 5-year-old black child near where they live, work or shop; something that's different than what might have been occurring just prior to Jhessye being reported missing 35 days ago. Investigators need to hear from you.

The investigators and other support personnel working this case are still hopeful that law enforcement will locate Jhessye alive, and our commitment hasn't wavered in the least. Although we cannot speak to specifics of our investigation, if and when we have new information that would be useful to the community and would not compromise our investigation, we will come forward with it. We continue to encourage anyone with any information that might help us find Jhessye to call 480 WITNESS or 911.

Me too.  I'm so sick and tired of all these missing children cases.  And despite the mother's horrid past, my gut tells me that the little girl wandered off while her mom was off running errands and fell into the hands of a truly evil person.  JMOO in this case.

Mother of missing Ariz. girl Jhessye Shockley arrested on child abuse charges
November 21, 2011

(CBS/AP) GLENDALE, Ariz. - Police said Monday they've arrested the mother of a missing 5-year-old Arizona girl on child abuse charges.

Jerice Hunter was arrested on child abuse charges "directly related to Jhessye," Glendale Police Sgt. Brent Coombs said. Jhessye Shockley has been missing since Oct. 11.

Coombs said Monday investigators don't believe they'll find the girl alive and that Hunter "is our No. 1 focus."

Hunter's apartment was surrounded by police tape Monday as investigators in white jumpsuits searched inside. Police declined to say what investigators were doing.

Police have previously said they believe Shockley wandered from her Glendale apartment while Hunter was running an errand. The girl's three older siblings were the last to see her.

Police have repeatedly said they had no evidence, suspects or promising leads.

Meanwhile, state Child Protective Services removed Hunter's four other children, including a newborn, from her home but have declined to give a reason. Police have also said they had no involvement in that decision.

Hunter has come under scrutiny during the investigation for an October 2005 arrest with her then-husband George Shockley in California on child abuse charges. She pleaded no contest to corporal punishment and served about four years in prison before she was released on parole in May 2010.

Hunter's oldest child, 14 at the time, told police that his mother routinely beat the children.

Glendale Mom's Abusive Past to Overshadow Investigation Into Toddler's Whereabouts?
October 27, 2011

 ::snipping2::
The family has expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation, as well as the lack of attention the case has been receiving in the mainstream media and suggested that this might be due to an element of racial insensitivity.

Some have expressed suspicion of Hunter, who was sentenced to eight years in a California prison in 2006 for child abuse. According to a court document, the charges included the torturing of her 7-year old daughter and the infliction of physical injuries on her other children.

The document also included a psychological evaluation of Hunter, which found: "Ms. Hunter will need a spectrum of psychological treatment services." It also suggested: "She will need to acquire some anger management tools in general. She will need a series of parenting classes to help her acquire more healthy and productive methods of disciplining and for caring for her children."
According to abc15.com in Arizona, Hunter faced prosecution when, in 2005, the children's grandmother decided to call police after spotting a cut on her 13-year-old granddaughter's leg. Three other children in the home were also suffering from injuries to their bodies.

In Jan. 2006, in exchange for a no-contest plea, prosecutors dropped torture charges against Hunter and she began serving her time in prison.

She appealed her sentence but was denied by the courts. It is unclear why she is free today.
 ::snipping2::
Hunter scolded the media Monday, at a public gathering for her daughter, for focusing too much on her past and not on finding her daughter. "We feel that law enforcement is not active in finding Jahessye and that they're more active in persecuting me instead of finding out where she is," Hunter said, according to the AP.  Hunter can just shut her pie hole, because now she's back in jail where she belongs.  JMHO

During her initial court appearance, Jerice Hunter gripped her arms, nodded her head and rocked back and forth as the wait got to her.

"Is this legal," she said. "They do this to everybody?"

The judge excused herself from the bench several times. After over an hour sitting in her jail stripes in the courtroom, a brief outburst from the frazzled defendant. "I don't even know what's going on. This is not fair," Hunter cried out.

The judge would not say why the intial appearance was being pushed back to Tuesday.

PHOENIX -- The teenage sister of a missing 5-year-old Arizona girl told police her mother instructed her to lie about the girl's disappearance, that her mother kept the girl in a closet, and that the girl had cuts and bruises before she was reported missing, according to a court document released Tuesday.

``(She) reported that Jhessye's hair had been pulled out and described Jhessye as not looking alive and that she looked like a zombie,'' the document said. ``(She) said that the closet where Jhessye had been looked like a grave and smelled like dead people.''

The document was released minutes after the girl's mother, Jerice Hunter, had her first court appearance, during which she proclaimed her innocence.

"I did plead not guilty, of course," said Hunter in court. The mother tested positive for THC, indicating marijuana use and was informed that she is now a suspect in a homicide.

The teen said that a few days before Jhessye disappeared, her mother spent the entire day cleaning the apartment and cleaning her shoes from the closet with soap and bleach. Police said they found a receipt that showed Hunter bought food and a bottle of bleach two days before she reported her daughter missing.

 ::snipping2::
The teen told police that Hunter had instructed her to lie about her sister, Jhessye Shockley, being missing, the document said. She also said Jhessye had been abused and had black eyes before she disappeared.

She also said that several weeks ago Hunter became angry when she returned home to find Jhessye wearing a long T-shirt while watching TV with a neighbor boy, telling the girl that she was a ``ho'' before taking her into a bedroom, according to the document.

The teen said she could hear her sister screaming and crying in the room, the document said.

Abuse detailed in Jhessye Shockley case
November 22, 2011

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Court documents released Tuesday detail abuse related to a 5-year-old Glendale girl who has been missing since Oct. 11.

The documents say that Jhessye Shockley's teenage sister told police that their mother, Jerice Hunter, kept the little girl in a closet. The teen told investigators that she had seen several bruises and cuts on Jhessye's face and body.

The sister also said that Hunter told her and her siblings to lie to police about Jhessye being missing.

The teen said that a few days before Jhessye was reported missing, Hunter had spent the entire day cleaning the apartment and had cleaned her shoes from the closet with soap and bleach. Police said credit card records indicate Hunter had purchased a bottle of bleach on Oct. 9.

Hunter was arrested Monday on a felony count of child abuse. She is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Hunter had her first court appearance Tuesday morning and said she was innocent.

Could it be that Jhessye's older sister's reference to "zombie" implied that the little girl was deceased?

Mom of missing Jhessye Shockley a homicide suspect
Published: Nov. 23, 2011 at 2:12 PM

PHOENIX, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- An Arizona woman charged with child abuse has been told she is suspected of killing her missing 5-year-old daughter.

At a court appearance Tuesday, Jerice Hunter of Phoenix looked surprised when informed she was a murder suspect, The Arizona Republic reported. Bail was set at $100,000.

Hunter was arrested Monday, weeks after she reported Jhessye Shockley missing.

A court document described statements from Jhessye's older sisters about their mother's treatment of the little girl.

An older sister told investigators she last saw Jhessye in September. She said she found the 5-year-old in a closet and that she looked like a "zombie."

Hunter did not report her daughter missing until Oct. 11.

Document: Missing 5-year-old Ariz. girl was abused

<snipped>

Investigators declined to say what that information was, but the court document details a recent interview they conducted with Hunter's 13-year-old daughter, who was removed from the home by state Child Protective Services the day after her sister was reported missing.

The document, a probable cause statement, said the teenager recently began to talk to her foster mother about Jhessye, saying that "she was told by her mother, Jerice, to lie to police about Jhessye being missing."

Police then interviewed the teen, who told them that she did not see Jhessye the day she disappeared, reversing her previous story to authorities that she had seen the girl.

She also said that several weeks ago Hunter became angry when she returned home to find Jhessye wearing a long T-shirt while watching TV with a neighbor boy, telling the girl that she was a "ho" before taking her into a bedroom, according to the document.

The teen said she could hear her sister screaming and crying in the room, the document said.

She also told police that Hunter kept Jhessye in a bedroom closet and deprived her of food and water, and that she had seen the girl with black eyes and bruises and cuts to her face and body, according to the document.

"(She) reported that Jhessye's hair had been pulled out and described Jhessye as not looking alive and that she looked like a zombie," the document said. "(She) said that the closet where Jhessye had been looked like a grave and smelled like dead people."

The teen said that a few days before Jhessye disappeared, her mother spent the entire day cleaning the apartment and cleaning her shoes from the closet with soap and bleach. Police said they found a receipt that showed Hunter bought food and a bottle of bleach two days before she reported her daughter missing.

Hunter told police that she last saw Jhessye on Oct. 11 after she left her in her older siblings' care while she ran an errand.

At a news conference Monday, Glendale Police Sgt. Brent Coombs said authorities do not expect to find Jhessye alive, but he didn't explain why. He also said Hunter is the investigation's "No. 1 focus."

Janet...I feel  that Jhessye WAS dead when sister said that she looked like a zombie....poor baby..Marc Klaas had a good read on his blog today about missing children..Jhessye being given back to her mother after she had already spent time in prison for child abuse, was married to a register sex offender etc...it is outrageous that these children were place back in that home..where was the rest of the family, the children's bio dads? grandparents, etc...case workers?? this child had no chance..no one to help any of them..

Bondsman Refuses to Bail Out Accused Mom Jerice Hunter

PHOENIX - A bail bondsman says his company will not help Jerice Hunter get out of jail even if she comes up with the money for a bond -- and he wants other people in the bail bonds business to follow his lead.

Bond for Jerice Hunter is $100,000. Her daughter Jhessye is missing and feared dead by Glendale police -- but Hunter is jailed only on a child abuse charge.

A church is vowing to come up with the $10,000 needed for a bond.

Andrew Wirtjes from Regulator Bail Bonds feels she should stay in jail. Wirtjes went on Facebook urging other bondsmen not to bail her out.

He said: “A mother is accused of killing her baby girl and her bond is a measly one hundred thousand dollars the sad part is we know she has the money and the property and some idiot is going to write this bond.”

additional snip to the above article:

 ::snipping2::
She was released Monday from the Maricopa County Jail near 35th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road. No one was there to pick her up or to meet her. When FOX 10's Linda Williams approached her, Hunter was seen on a pay phone trying to get a ride.
 ::snipping2::

Now that she's a free woman, Hunter was not pleased to see the media.

"The media are vultures. You people are parasites, you don't care about me. Leave me alone," said Hunter. "I'm not talking to the media."

When Linda Williams replied, "We do care about what happened to your daughter," Hunter interrupted, "I'm making a phone call..I'm trying to have a private conversation."

She did not get a ride and was seen walking away from the jail on Buckeye Road after talking to someone who we believe was her father.

Hunter said nothing about Jhessye even though she was pressed about her situation. She continued to rail about the media and said she would not be saying anything to the media. Hunter was heard complaining to someone about the jail, saying it was a horrible place and the food was bad.

So sad that DPS (among others) failed this beautiful child. She should be dreaming of Santa and making her Christmas list now.

Glendale police won't search landfill for missing girl

by Raquel Velasco - Dec. 1, 2011 05:42 PM
The Arizona Republic - 12 News Breaking News Team

 ::snipping2::

The Glendale Police Department said Thursday they no longer believe it is necessary to search the city landfill for Jhessye Shockley, the 5-year-old girl reported missing nearly eight weeks ago.

From the beginning, police had secured parts of the Glendale Landfill for a potential search for evidence in connection with the girl's disappearance.

However, investigators believe it is no longer necessary to hold the areas any longer, authorities said.

They said it should not be taken as a sign that they found Jhessye or that they have reduced their investigative efforts.

"Our primary goal remains the same," Sgt. Brent Coombs, a police spokesman, said in a written statement. "We want to locate Jhessye and bring to justice the person or persons responsible for her disappearance."

This is why the egg donor was released from jail! ::MonkeyCool::

PROSECUTORS:

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery (pictured) says prosecutors didn't charge Hunter for a strategic reason.

If the Glendale woman were indicted on a child-abuse charge, it could create a situation of double jeopardy if prosecutors later pursued a felony murder case against her, he said.

Attorney: Mother of missing Glendale girl Jhessye Shockley receiving threats
December 2, 2011

GLENDALE, AZ - The attorney for a mother of a 5-year-old Glendale girl who vanished in October said the woman is afraid for her own safety.

Jhessye Schockley disappeared from her apartment near 45th and Glendale avenues. Police said they don’t believe she will be found alive.

Police arrested her mother, Jerice Hunter, for alleged abuse in connection to her missing daughter on Monday, November 21st. She was released on November 28th without being charged.

County Attorney Bill Montgomery said he needed more evidence before proceeding with a case against Hunter.

Attorney Scott Maasen said his client has had to deal with threats ever since she was released from jail earlier this week

“Some of her neighbors and others have said things,” said Maasen. “She is recognizable and she is worried in respect to that.”

He stopped short of saying Hunter had received death threats.

Investigators believe Jhessye Shockley was killed, dumped in Tempe trash bin
By Jennifer Thomas

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Glendale police said Wednesday that they now believe 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was killed and that her body was dumped in a trash receptacle in Tempe.
Shortly after the Nov. 21 arrest of the girl's mother, Jerice Hunter, on a child abuse charge, investigators received reliable information from leads and believe Jhessye's body was placed in the trash bin prior to the report of her disappearance on Oct. 11.

Trash from the location is taken to the Butterfield Landfill located south of the Valley.

Sgt. Brent Coombs said investigators have been working to determine the viability of searching the landfill, including analyzing the likelihood that they'll recover Jhessye's body. The decision will be finalized in the coming weeks.

Police said the case is an active homicide investigation but did not specify who they think killed the child.

Glendale police to search Mobile landfill for missing girl

The search for a missing Glendale girl will soon center on a landfill south of Phoenix.

Glendale police confirmed Tuesday that they will comb through trash at the Butterfield Station Landfill in search of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley's body. They hope to begin the effort by the end of the month.

It's expected to take several weeks.

 ::snipping2::
Police suspect Jhessye's body was dumped in a Tempe trash bin, miles from her Glendale home, and taken from there to the landfill in Mobile.

Those who have been involved in past landfill searches caution that police face an arduous and expensive task.

 ::snipping2::
Because it has been months since the girl disappeared, police will be looking for bones, said Arpad Vass, a Tennessee-based scientist who has helped with landfill searches.

But Glendale police say they are emboldened by the idea of finding the girl reported missing Oct.11.

"We feel like we've identified the right location and we're going to give it our best shot," said Officer Tracey Breeden, a Glendale police spokeswoman.

 ::snipping2::
Police have repeatedly said Jhessye's mother, Jerice Hunter, is the focus of their investigation. She was arrested Nov.21 on suspicion of child abuse involving Jhessye but released as prosecutors said they didn't want to create a situation of double jeopardy if they later pursued a murder case against her.

I would imagine the police would have a difficult time determining exactly where to search.  They don't know which day Jhessye actually 'disappeared' from the home.  They don't know exactly where the momster disposed of her at.  The area may have more than one land fill.  She may've used multiple dumpsters if she used dumpsters at all.  And the landfill may not use a system that allows for tracking of where a truck's contents are placed in the landfill.  Then you have to think about incinerators that may be used.  Even if they could determine the exact day that Jhessye's remains were taken from the home, they still have lots of unknowns to factor in to where to start looking.   I'm not so confident in criticizing LE just yet.

This is one case where I would like to see an attorney file a law suit against the state for damages done to the children who were all returned to this monster after she was released from prison for child abuse (and torture).

Part of her sentence should have been that upon release she can no longer be in contact with children when alone and certainly not to have custody of them returned to her.

Whipping children with belts and cords until their skin is open and bleeding is an act of a sadist.  Sadists do not suddenly realize the err of their ways and become compassionate, able to care in a responsible way for the same children they tortured.

This is not rocket science.

GLENDALE -- Police say they are close to making an arrest in the disappearance and presumed death of Jhessye Shockley, the 5-year-old Glendale girl who vanished in October.

Earlier this month, the Glendale Police Department announced that it is putting together an operation to search Butterfield Station Landfill for the little girl's body. That search is still in the planning phase, but it is expected to get under way later this month.

Detectives also were awaiting the forensic results on evidence collected from the Shockley home during a search in November. That analysis reportedly is now complete.

Glendale police announced Thursday they would begin combing through piles of garbage on Feb. 6 at the Butterfield landfill in Mobile.

The search could last several weeks and could cover an area measuring approximately 180 by 200 feet, and over 20 feet deep. It is the equivalent of one day's waste, which amounts to 6,000 tons of trash.

GLENDALE, AZ - The Glendale Police Department is being accused of using several GPS tracking devices to follow the mother of missing 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley.

Officers would not comment on the techniques they may or not be using because of the sensitivity of the investigation.

But Jerice Hunter's attorney, Scott Maasen, said at least three devices were found on the cars of her friends who drove her around town over the past few months.  Hunter does not have a car herself and often gets rides from her friends.

Maasen said the first device was found a few weeks ago when a man was checking under the hood of her car and noticed a box.

"We need police to play by the rules," said Maasen.
EXCUSE ME?????  How is a mother abusing her kids and killing one of them 'playing by the rules'?  Seems to me this atty and his client think that there should be two sets of rules.  One for the perp and one for LE.

Where's that dumbazz button?
I am still looking for that button!! (LOL)  ::MonkeyDevil::

When you find it, will you let me know.
Not playing by the rules . . . and whose rules would that be?

Arizona authorities optimistic after landfill search for missing girl

Published February 08, 2012

PHOENIX –  Authorities searched a landfill south of Phoenix for a third day without finding a missing Glendale girl's remains, but they had reason to be optimistic.

The Arizona Republic says authorities sifting through trash Wednesday found mail and newspapers marked with the same date that investigators believe 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley's body was disposed in a Tempe trash bin.

Police believe the girl's body was disposed days before her mother reported her missing on Oct. 11.

Jhessye Shockley Disappearance: Documents Found Dated Around Time Girl Went Missing

The search of the landfill where police believe they may find the the body of missing 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley continues into week two with no sign of the girl, as police say today that nothing related to disappearance has been found.

What has been found, however, are documents in the area that's being searched that are dated around the time of Shockley's disappearance in October.

The headline is rather misleading, imo.  Although the first month of the landfill search had "no discoveries significant to the case", the searches will continue, but with a different group of officers.

Landfill search for missing Glendale girl yields no key finds

March 2, 2012

The first month of the landfill search for a missing Glendale girl’s remains has ended with no discoveries significant to the case.

Police from Glendale and other Valley agencies have combed through about 1,500 tons of trash at the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile in hopes of finding 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley’s body and evidence related to her death, said Sgt. Brent Coombs, a Glendale police spokesman.

That’s about a quarter of the 6,000 tons police aim to sift through in hopes of finding Jhessye’s remains, and the equivalent of about a day’s trash.
 ::snipping2::
Despite the arduous task at the landfill, Coombs said the search team remains confident.

They continue to find dated letters and newspapers from the area where Jhessye’s body was apparently disposed, the sergeant said.

Next week, cadaver dogs from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s posse and a new group of officers, many of them from Phoenix, will begin assisting with the search.

LENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Crews are now on their 10th week of searching the Butterfield Landfill for little Jhessye Shockley.

The 5-year-old Glendale girl hasn't been seen since October, and police believe her body is in the landfill.

Each day, crews are sorting stacks of garbage looking for any sign of her, but with the temperatures heating up, the conditions are more difficult for searchers.
 ::snipping2::
Crews are working from about 6 a.m. until noon, and police still believe they are close to finding the little girl.

Landfill search cost for missing Glendale girl nears $400,000

Glendale police spent nearly $400,000 in the first eight weeks of a landfill search for a 5-year-old girl’s remains. For 10 weeks, police have raked through thousands of tons of trash at the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile hoping to find Jhessye Shockley’s body.

Police have used funds from drug-investigation seizures to cover $255,500 in equipment, fuel and other costs but the city has paid out about $144,000 in overtime to officers, firefighters and others assisting with the search, according to police figures released to The Republic after a records request.

No end in sight in the search for the body of Jhessye Shockley
April 13, 2012

Glendale Police have spent almost $400,000 in the first two months of a landfill search for Jhessye Shockley, who was reported missing by her mother, Jerice Hunter, on October 11.

Investigators believe the girl's body was dumped into a Tempe trash bin days before she was reported missing, and Hunter remains the primary focus of the investigation.

To date, Glendale Police have spent $144,000 in overtime and another $255,000 from drug seizure funds to pay for equipment, fuel and other costs.

"There's no set time for the search to end," said Tracey Breeden with Glendale Police. "We plan on being at that landfill until we search the target area. We are professionally and ethically bound to be there and costs come with that responsibility.

"We understand the costs are climbing but we have a duty to be out there. We feel there's a little girl out there named Jhessye and we're doing everything we can to locate her."
 ::snipping2::
The deeper the search goes into spring and summer the more heat becomes a factor for the search teams.

"We have tents out there. The FBI has brought in air conditioning units," Breeden said.

At the present rate the search could run into June or July if the missing girls body can't be found.

A landfill search for a missing Glendale girl's remains has ended without the recovery authorities and family members had sought.

Glendale police announced Wednesday that despite the efforts of about 200 searchers, authorities were unable to find 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley's body at the Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile.

The case now moves into a different phase and detectives and prosecutors must decide their next move. They could pursue a murder case without the girl's body.

Police say they remain determined to bring justice for Jhessye.

Jhessye Shockley Search Ends Without a Trace of 5-Year-Old Girl's Body
By Matthew Hendley Wed., Jun. 27 2012 at 2:32 PM

The body of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley will likely never be found after Glendale police announced today that the search of the Butterfield Landfill has been completed.

Rick St. John, assistant police chief, said at a press conference this afternoon that people have sifted through 9,500 tons of trash since February. But she wasn't in the area investigators had pinpointed.

"We didn't miss her," he said.

St. John said investigators know she's in the landfill somewhere, which has 691 acres full of garbage in total.

He added that there's "irrefutable evidence" she's there somewhere, although he declined to elaborate on what that evidence is.

Mother of missing Arizona girl Jhessye Shockley arrested again
 September 7, 2012 at 9:24 AM

PHOENIX (AP) — The mother of an Arizona girl missing for nearly a year was re-arrested in the case Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder and child abuse.

Police in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale announced at a news conference that Jerice Hunter was taken into custody without incident at her home in Mesa.

Hunter, 38, was indicted earlier in the day by a Maricopa County grand jury, even though the body of 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley hasn’t been found.

Hunter’s lawyer Scott Maasen said his client maintains her innocence.

 ::snipping2::

Investigators believe Shockley’s body was disposed of days before Hunter reported her missing Oct. 11 and told police that she left Jhessye with the girl’s older siblings while she ran an errand and returned to find her gone.

A 96-day search at a Phoenix-area landfill ended in late June without finding the girl’s remains.

Glendale Police Chief Debora Black said at a news conference that Shockley’s “final resting place” likely is at the bottom of the Butterfield Landfill in Mobile, south of Phoenix, but no additional searches are scheduled.

 ::snipping2::

Hunter was arrested in November on suspicion of child abuse but later released from jail with the charge dropped. Prosecutors said then that they wanted to continue investigating and were worried that Hunter would not be eligible for a potential murder charge if she was convicted of abusing Shockley, a situation known as double jeopardy

 ::snipping2::

Police records show Jhessye’s siblings told investigators in the days after her disappearance that Hunter allegedly abused her and kept the girl in a closet.

In October 2005, Hunter was arrested with her then-husband on child abuse charges in California. Hunter pleaded no contest to corporal punishment and served about four years in prison before she was released on parole in May 2010.

A $500,000 bond was set Friday for the mother of a missing Glendale child. 38-year-old Jerice Hunter’s daughter Jessye Shockley hasn’t been seen since last year.

Police believe Hunter murdered the then-five year old and disposed of her body several days before reporting her missing October 11. A 96-day search at a Phoenix-area landfill ended in late June without finding any remains

Hunter's attorney speaks about arrest in Jhessye Shockley case
Updated Saturday, Sep 8 at 9:00 AM

PHOENIX -- Jerice Hunter was back in court Thursday night.

Hunter’s attorney, Scott Maasen, was by her side.

She faces first-degree murder and child abuse charges.

Hunter’s accused of killing her daughter, in Glendale, last year.

Maasen was surprised by the arrest.

“I think she was doing fairly well considering the circumstances of having a SWAT team arrive at your house and being taken to jail and put through that process,” said Maasen.

It's been 11 months since Jhessye Shockley, 5, disappeared.

Since then Hunter was arrested for child abuse related to her daughter’s disappearance. But the charges were later dropped.

Maasen has requested to see the evidence against his client, but so far nothing.

Jerice Hunter Pleads Not Guilty to Abuse, Murder of 5-Year-Old Jhessye Shockley
 Sep. 17 2012 at 10:15 AM

Jerice Hunter's still maintaining her innocence in the in the death of her 5-year-old daughter, Jhessye Shockley.

Hunter pleaded not guilty this morning to charges of child abuse and the first-degree murder, and is still being held on $500,000 bond.

The details of how police believe Hunter killed Jhessye likely won't be released until trial, as she was arrested on a grand jury warrant almost two weeks ago.

 ::snipping2::

Hunter -- who's served prison time for child abuse before for abusing her other children -- had always been the prime suspect in Jhessye's death.

According to court documents previously obtained by New Times, Jhessye's 13-year-old sister told her foster parents that several weeks before the little girl was reported missing, Hunter called Jhessye a "ho" and dragged her into a bedroom, where they heard Jhessye screaming and crying.

She did this, police say, because she came home and found Jhessye watching TV with a boy from their neighborhood.

Jhessye's sister also told police about Hunter keeping Jhessye locked in the closet, according to the documents, as she'd give her sister water and let her out of the closet when Hunter was gone.

Jhessye's sister added that she was missing patches of hair, and the closet she was locked in smelled like "dead people."

Jhessye's sister also said that two days before Hunter reported Jhessye missing, she bought a bottle of bleach and cleaned her entire apartment, and scrubbed down a pair of shoes that she kept in the same closet Jhessye was locked in.

Prosecutors: Mother is responsible for missing girl's death

Posted: Sep 16, 2012 5:42 PM PDT Updated: Sep 21, 2012 5:43 PM PDT

PHOENIX -

It's hard to believe we've been covering the case of a missing Glendale girl for almost a year now.

5-year-old Jhessye Shockley was reported missing last October.

After months of investigating and pouring over evidence, prosecutors believe they can prove that her own mother is responsible for the child's death.

On Monday, Jerice Hunter is expected to respond to charges of murder and child abuse.

Hunter's arraignment is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.  Authorities say she was arrested on Sept. 6, based on the evidence they've been collecting for the past 11 months, but they've shared very few details about what they discovered.

Police report released on Jhessye Shockley's murder

Up to this point, the public never really knew why police believed with certainty that Jhessye was killed and her remains at the Butterfield Landfill.

The crucial tip that lead them in that direction is reflected on page 925 of the report. There it is revealed that on Nov. 23, about six weeks after Jhessye was reported missing, a woman contacted investigators.

That woman said that seven to 15 days before Hunter reported her daughter missing, she gave Hunter a ride to Tempe. At the time, Hunter put a large, heavy suitcase in the woman's trunk. When they got to Tempe, Hunter put it in a Dumpster. Hunter even apologized to the woman for the smell of the suitcase. Police tested the trunk of that car and it tested positive for blood.

We know more today than a year ago. Details emerged from 1,400 pages of investigation files that recently were made public.

The children in the home reported to adults that Jhessye was kept in a closet and given food different from that given the other kids.

Witnesses reported seeing Hunter disposed of a large, foul-smelling suitcase days before she called police.

Relatives suspected abuse, noticing burn marks and bruises on Jhessye.

The answers we seek might not bring us comfort, but we can only hope they are answers that might bring some justice to this child’s tragic life.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- For the first time, we're getting a look inside the apartment where Jhessye Shockley lived. She's the five year old girl who disappeared more than a year ago.

Jhessye's mom, Jerice Hunter, was arrested in September and charged in her daughter's death. She pleaded not guilty to murder and child abuse.

Police now believe the little girl's body is in the Butterfield landfill.

Jerice Hunter sentenced to life in prison in Jhessye Shockley's murder

Jhessye Shockley's body has not been found.

Jerice Hunter, the Glendale mother convicted of killing her 5-year-old daughter, Jhessye Shockley, has been sentenced to life in prison. The girl's body has never been found, but police believe her body was stuffed in a suitcase and left in a Tempe garbage bin.

The sentencing marks the conclusion of a case that began in October 2011, when Hunter told police that Shockley had disappeared from her Glendale apartment. She did not react when Judge Rosa Mroz read the sentence Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

During the trial, prosecutors had portrayed Hunter as a liar and manipulator who, after serving a prison sentence in California, used law enforcement to take Jhessye from loving relatives. They argued that Hunter never developed a maternal bond with the girl described by her teacher as "bubbly" and an "emerging leader."

While prosecutors Jeannette Gallagher and Blaine Gadow said it could not be determined how or when Hunter killed Jhessye, they told jurors she put the girl's body in a suitcase and then conned a neighbor into driving her to Tempe so she could sell items Hunter had claimed were inside.

The state won convictions of child abuse and first-degree murder against Hunter despite the lack of an eyewitness to Jhessye's killing or the discovery of the girl's body.

Prosecutors presented jurors with evidence that contradicted defense attorney Candice Shoemaker's portrayal of Hunter as a desperate mother whose years of incarceration while awaiting trial had prevented her from working on what was most important: finding Jhessye.

Hunter's daughter and Hunter's ex-lover testified about Hunter's corporal punishment of Jhessye. The daughter lashed out from the witness stand at the people she believed tore her family apart—police, prosecutors and a state agency that separated her from her siblings—but also described Jhessye being forced by Hunter to live in a closet.

The ex-lover told the court about hearing Hunter beat the child over spilled Play Doh.

The state appeared to be veering into minutiae when it painstakingly laid out Hunter's numerous excuses for Jhessye missing more than two weeks of kindergarten before the girl's disappearance. But those became key details when one of Hunter's relatives testified that Hunter had asked him to drive Jhessye to school on one of the days Hunter told school officials that the girl would be absent from school because of ringworm and pink eye.

Hunter's request became more significant when the relative told jurors that the girl he drove to school wasn't the one whose picture flashed across television screens as part of a missing-person search that went national.

The defense called just two witnesses and took just one day to present Hunter's case.

The first witness struggled to recall details and was seen as ineffective.

The second, a grandmother, presented herself as having a photographic memory. The woman described in detail having seen a girl she identified as Jhessye just hours before Hunter reported the girl missing.

The woman testified that she went outside her apartment, near 45th and Glendale avenues, to smoke a cigarette, saw Jhessye and tried to help her. But the girl was upset, had been crying and fled toward the intersection where the woman told jurors she saw her get into the passenger seat of a dark sedan that sped away, the witness said.

Hunter's family speaks on sentencing

While the woman's testimony validated Hunter's story that she'd discovered Jhessye missing after returning from an errand on Oct. 11, 2011, it didn't contradict Jhessye's sister's statements about seeing Jhessye bruised, unable to walk and losing her hair while locked in her mother's closet.

Nor was the defense able to explain the large blood stain detectives discovered underneath the closet's carpet, a stain forensic examiners determined was likely Jhessye's blood.

The jury of seven men and five women reached the guilty verdicts in late April. Hunter has maintained her innocence since Glendale police identified her as a suspect about a month after Jhessye disappeared.

The jury also decided Hunter had committed fraud against the community when she pleaded for help in bringing her daughter home.
