Bluemoon........  the covered bridge has just undergone some needed maintenance. Here's a video report from my local news channel:

Two of the people I work with live in Elizabethton and I'm very familiar with the bridge. At Halloween, there's always a "haunted walk-through" and the annual festival there is named after the bridge. It is pretty. I like it best in winter I think. At night it has white lights strung across it and there's a wreath hung in the middle. I can't find a picture with the lights, but here's one with the wreath:

CBB, that is a beautiful picture in the snow.  I am glad to hear the bridge has undergone renovations and they are preserving their history.  That area is so beautiful.  We sat in the park that morning and just watched the water trickling over the dam and then walked all over the park and over the bridge.  That was a real challenge for me as I am afraid of water and heights!  We are going back around June and through that area on our way to Shenandoah valley.  I am currently unemployed (company moved out of the state) and am getting back into my genealogy research.  Trying to put together a Family genealogy report for our family reunion so everyone will have a copy but it has become such a job that I don't know whether I will get it done in time or not.

San, I used that same picture as my background at my old job.  It is a very beautiful picture.

I don't know how to Twitter.

I don't understand it. On TV, you see these long lists of posts or tweets or whatever you call them, and the TV host invites you to "join the conversation". I've tried 2 times to "tweet" but I really just want to see the list they are talking about. How do you do that??    ::MonkeyEek::

If I want to read someone's tweets while I'm at my computer, I just put as where I want to go: https://twitter.com/ plus their twitter addy.

Notice the prefix for twitter addy is the same.  After the / you can put in the addy.  See?  And that's why I know how to finish out a twitter address when one of our monkeys posts a tweet and fails to put in the full address.   ::MonkeyWink::  I can see the tweeters name, and all I have to do is add the prefix, url tags and then it's a working, clickable link.

1.  You really do need to get a twitter account.  Just like Myspace and Facebook you have to be a member of Twitter to read Twitter (I think  ::MonkeyCool:: )

I'm sure it's simple once you know how, right? I remember, (to my great embarrassment) the first time I used a computer. I started typing. I typed a line. It appeared that it was near the end of the first line, so I started looking for the "return" key. I looked and looked and just couldn't find it. Did I get up and walk away? Noooooooooooo................. I called my neighbor to ask him where it was.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

I couldn't understand a word he was saying for almost 5 minutes. He was screaming with laughter! He ended up coming over.......... I honestly think he just wanted to see it for himself!   ::MonkeyHaHa:: He has a doctorate in finance and, at the time, had been teaching at the University for years. Computers had been part of his life forever and we're good friends, but he just couldn't pass that one up. He kept showing me stuff about the internet and I wasn't interested.   ::MonkeyHaHa::

Not long after I finally started playing around just a little with "the web" on my nifty dial up modem, I decided to see if I could find a leather skirt for winter. I wanted a mid calf length and couldn't find one locally. OMG..................... I will never forget it! One late night, after everyone was in bed, I clicked a link, and it was a porn site! Not only was it a porn site but it had audio! There was this woman moaning and groaning and breathing in my den!! I tried to "x" it away like my neighbor taught me, but she just kept moaning no matter what I did! He had told me to never shut down the computer manually so I was afraid to just shut it off with the power button and she just kept breathing!! I had NO idea about the volume controls and she was LOUD! I had made the picture go away, but that woman wouldn't shut up! I kept thinking............ nobody can last this long, who's she kidding?! I almost died when my 8 year old came staggering in................... she woke him up!!!

At that point, I pushed the power button! FINALLY, she shut up!   ::MonkeyHaHa::

Hopefully, my adventure into twitter won't be so eventful.  ::MonkeyWink::

Once the screen comes up I look up tweets by putting names in the search box.  You can even see what other people tweet them...lol

Just copy and past the link because it automatically doesn't work when you click on the link I posted.  You can really search anything you want.

Hey Twitter fanatics, your favorite social network for short bursts of information has released updates to its iPhone and Android applications so that you can feed the beast and find out what’s happening even faster.

Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for Android now feature a few fun goodies including more discovery tools, better search, and additional notification options specifically aimed at the power users among us (the rest of you won’t notice the subtle upgrades).

In-app searchers, especially those looking for specific tweeps, will be delighted by the fact that search better distinguishes between people (accounts) and tweets (content) in both the Connect and Discover tabs. Search now also suggests related terms and different spellings. The improvements should make for a simpler, less frustrating search experience on mobile — because as any iTwitterer knows, search was definitely lacking on mobile.

After bullish expectations and an aggressive marketing campaign for an image considered the quintessential expression of modern horror, Sotheby'sNew York sold Edvard Munch's 1895 “The Scream” for $119.9 million on Wednesday night, setting a record for the most expensive artwork sold at auction.

The top spot was previously held by Picasso's 1932 “Nude, Green, Leave and Bust” -- a painting of his much-younger lover Marie-Therese Walter that sold at Christie’s in 2010 for $106.5 million.

The identity of the buyer, who was bidding by phone during the 12-minute auction, has not been confirmed. Bidding started at $40 million, with at least five bidders. Rumors before the sale, not confirmed, focused on interest from the royal family of Qatar.

Munch's "The Scream" achieved another milestone: It now ranks as the most expensive drawing publicly sold. For this version of “The Scream” -- one of four -- is best described as a crayon or pastel drawing, not a painting, on board. The Munch Museum in Oslo owns a pastel as well as a painted version, while the National Gallery of Norway holds the earliest painting, dated 1893.

And it easily beat out the previous auction record for Munch, also held by Sotheby's. In 2008, the auction house sold the 1894 Munch painting "Vampire," a melodramatic image of a red-haired, bare-armed woman kissing a man's neck, for about $38 million.

'Chimp cam' captures funny business at chimpanzee sanctuary

CLE ELUM, Wash. -- While Disney enjoys the benefits of years of work on a its newly released movie "Chimpanzee," a sanctuary near Cle Elum, Washington, has been quietly making its own movie.

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest was established nine years ago to take in chimpanzees that were used in the biomedical and entertainment industries.  In 2008, seven chimpanzees that had been used in scientific laboratory tests in Pennsylvania arrived at the specially designed structure East of Cle Elum.

The group said the chimps were abused and are much too strong to ever be allowed to have human contact, so they are kept in a large comfortable home with access to a new two acre outdoor play area.

Recently the group placed two cameras in the compound to see how the chimps would respond. The results are fascinating and humorous.

Canadian-owned I'll Have Another wins Kentucky Derby

I'll Have Another chased down Bodemeister down the stretch to take the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The winning horse in the field of 20 has significant Canadian connections. Mexican jockey Mario Gutierrez raced at Hastings Park in Vancouver for six years, while the horse is owned by Windsor, Ont., native Jr. Paul Reddam.

"I was just kind of numb through the whole race and blink my eyes and it was over," said Reddam. "This team has just been terrific."

An elated Gutierrez, celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a successful first Derby run, gave special thanks to his friends and supporters from Vancouver in the post-race interview.

I think this might be the right place to ask. I finally got with the 21st century and got a smart phone. It's a LG Enlighten. I can do the web pretty well with it ,even can have as many as 8 pages open.
 My problem is when I try to go to Scared Monkeys I can navigate to the forum page but then the page shuts down. I remember from the CA trial days that some where on a phone. Is there a mobile app that I can't find?

I wish I could help...but, I have no idea.  Reading this post reminds me though that when I try to sign on via phone I get a screen that says "you are banned for lying to us for the last nine months."  My heart dropped the first time that I saw it...I thought I had been banned and went home and checked...I realized it was an error after I was able to sign in.  Ha!

There are different ban triggers you can use when banning someone from the forum.  You can ban on user name, email address ISP, IP or all of them.  When I want to make absolutely certain someone can't sneak back in (or as certain as I can) I ban them on all including any IP addresses they may have used or tried to use.  

IP's are often shared so this can cause occasional problems.  For instance, if two people live in the same vicinity they might occasionally share the same IP.  AOL users often share IP's.  

That said, there is only one banned member of SM with a comment like that and that person is DOLCE  ::MonkeyHaHa::  .  I know that Labubske isn't DOLCE so I assume at that one moment, when Labubske signed on from her phone, it was a same IP as Dolce once used.  I have now removed some of Dolce's IP triggers and Labubske shouldn't see that message again.   ::MonkeyHaHa::

Those that remember DOLCE will likely agree that the ban comment (for if she tried to log in) was probably too nice  ::MonkeyCool::

8 Year Old Victoria “Tori” Stafford Missing Since 4/8/09 in Ontario, Canada

Dolce lived in Florida and she was very friendly.  She informed us that she was pregnant and then told us pregnant with twins.  For nine months she lied about being pregnant with twins including posting photos of her babies.  She was a fraud.  She lied to us for 9 months for no real reason.  We don't like being taken  ::MonkeyCool::

She joined right around the time of the Caylee Anthony case and claimed to live near where Adji Desir went missing in Florida.  She was full of lies and only wanted attention.

She sounds like she has Borderline Personality D/O.  Very weird to lie about that and actually post pics.  Well, we live about three hours apart...I wonder why her IP address is close?  Thanks for sharing with me...I was real curious.  I'm so nosey!  Ha!

Having experienced estrangement, hate, indifference and finally reconciliation and some level of acceptance with a parent was most beneficial to me.

I am south and west of FW.  Bosque County - Just over the Brazos River from Johnson County and not too far from Glen Rose.

Not sure where to put this.  The couple is the grandparents of a friend of mine (this comes from the FB support page for the Straits):  It sounds like they need to get the word out...things aren't happening fast enough in this case.  Sounds like some support for the killer and rapist too.  Anyhow, thought that more support could come from the Monkeys.  Such a sad sad tragedy.

This is my GGGG Grandfather and his wife is buried beside him.  Her headstone is chipped piece of rock that (probably him) scratched her name and death date on the stone.  I think she died at 1805 (was born in 1751).

I have searched for this cemetery for over 15 years.  I almost cried today when I saw it.  It is in a "hollow" in Macon Co., TN, way back in the boonies.  I happen to look closely out into the field and there it was off in the distance.  We stopped and asked the old man who lived there if we could drive back there.  He said, Do you live around here?  No, I don't but my parents are both from this area.  Turns out he is a 3rd cousin to me.  He was so nice. We talked and talked.  Me and hubby drove back into the field (had to open an electric fence to get in there) and I just took pictures all around the cemetery.  I found my mothers half-brother there also.  Had to spray me and hubby down with "off" because of the deer ticks being so bad this year.  Also, had to watch where I walked as the copperheads are so thick in this area. My aunt would not come with me because of copperheads!!!!

I am so proud of my GGGG grandfather.  I have his military papers from that time period.  He came back home from fighting in North Carolina and the Tory's had burn his house down and his wife and kids were with neighbors hiding from the Tory's.  What a story to tell us so many years later!!

You and your hubby were very determined folks to deal with deer ticks and especially the threat of copperheads.  Durned copperheads don't give any warning and they are hard to see.  I'm glad you were able to find the graves of your relatives and get back out unscathed. 

Has anyone else heard that Robin Williams died on set in Austria early this morning?  Does anyone know a legitimate site to check?  I heard it through my local news station facebook page...but, it was not from the news it was from a person posting...there is one link that says it is true but not sure of it's reliability.

Hi Muffy.  I do have the GPS coordinates for the cemetery and that is how I found exactly where it was.  I googled maps using the coordinates and then I zoomed in.  I could not see the cemetery because it was hidden by trees but it did show me it was out in the middle of cow pasture surrounded by an electric fence.  I knew it was sitting above a creek on a little hillside but had no idea it was back in a field.  We had to stop at the house of the owner to get permission to go back to the cemetery.  Believe me, in an isolated area back in the boonies this is sometimes not a very wise thing to do.  I felt confident enough though that my parents were probably kin to almost anyone in the area and sure enough they were.  My hubby wasn't so confident, he stood back close to his truck and only came up to the house once I yelled at him.  He opened the electric fence and I drove the truck in and it was a little ways up to the cemetery. 

With this info I may apply now for the DAR designation for our family (Daughters of the American Revolution).  I really don't know why it is a Tennessee chapter of Historical Society because he was living and died in Kentucky.  His land is right on the border of Tennessee and Kentucky and originally a chapter of the Kentucky Historical society recognized him and found the grave site.  Back in those days there were disputes on which state that area was in.  I guess even today there is still a dispute about that.

No, he was born in Culpeper Co., VA and must have moved with his family to Chatham Co., NC at least by 1770.  I don't think he spent much time in Virginia.  I have GenealogyBank but haven't had much luck in finding a lot of the families in those newspaper.  It appears after his service in N.C. he moved his family to the land he is buried on and lived and died there.

Glad I was able to help Seahorse.  Try it as you go to different websites and practice.  You can do that with most.  It's obvious when you can't do it because you won't see the VIEW IMAGE INFO choice. 

Sometimes the verbiage used is different in different browsers though so that could be confusing.  The instructions I gave work with Firefox and some other browsers.  In Internet Explorer you click on PROPERTIES instead of VIEW IMAGE INFO and you will find the URL that ends with the .JPG there.   ::MonkeyCool::

Hello fellow monkeys. Hubby and I have a problem that has kept growing and I'm wondering if anyone here can direct me to a good background check source and/or any advice as to what we could do that we haven't thought of yet. We've moved recently and in between some scary people. A strange couple behind us and a weird guy in front of us, I'll call Frito for the sake of keeping all this from getting confused. We don't know the couple's name. We feel pretty sure they're all drug dealers. If they're not it would be a surprise. And they're the angry type, well the couple is. Frito is the quiet type but did something one day that showed he has some kind of temper! I've been trying to find out more about these neighbors but I'm not finding a lot. If anyone knows a good source for this I'd really appreciate it. We know Frito's full name thanks to another neighbor, but have hit a wall trying to find out the names of the couple. I tried using the state's department of corrections site to find out more about Frito, but I don't think it works correctly. I know this because I typed in someone's name my husband and I know is incarcerated and will be for some time and it's not showing a thing about him. I tried our county's website for any info on Frito and I did find something. I found an incident report about a woman who used to live in this neighborhood. She called the police to report something stolen and that she was sure Frito was the culprit. It's still an ongoing case. No arrests nor has her items been found. This happened last year.

When I started digging into our local newspaper archives I found that Frito was arrested for prescription fraud a few years ago.

I'm willing to fork out some money for a background report but I would rather spend it knowing they'll find out more than I have but I have no idea which service that would be. There's so many to choose from and I'd rather not spend a lot. I would be willing if I knew they would find out all there is to know, you know? We're saving up for a hand gun and for the first time in our marriage I'm agreeing with my husband that a gun in our home may be a wise idea. I want a tazer for myself. I've signed up for a self defense class. Some of this hasn't been so costly. The self defense class is free. But wow, home security can be costly! We've already spent some serious money on bolt locks, sensor lights, etc... This has all progressed since we've moved in...they do something weird or scary or both, and we add to our security. So now we're at the camera and gun stage. For the past 5 weeks or so, it's something odd just about every single day with these people! It's been trouble with them since the 2nd day we've moved here. The 2nd night we were here the sound of loud mufflers kept waking us up. We got up around 3am to find a truck pulling up to their place, (the couple next door), never even turned off the engine, he came out of the house to the truck, gave the guy in the truck something, and the truck left. It was like that for another hour or so. But that action slowed down once hubby put up sensor lights over there and a dummy camera. Since then, light activity of the same drive thru stuff goes on during the day at Frito's house in front of us. These two neighbors visit each other off and on every single day through out the day and nights. Thick as thieves! Once in a blue moon Frito visits their house. He always drives over, never walks there. It's quite a distance. but the couple are constantly walking over to Frito's or once in a while they'll drive over...every single day.

We're afraid to leave the house empty. We have to work around things so that someone is always home. One time one of us hid in the car while we drove off so it appeared that one of us didn't leave the house. We forgot about it and when we got back and Frito saw all of us coming home (he watched us leave also, he watches everything!) and he had this look on his face...like he was angry! First he had this look of surprise and then just this fuming look on his face! I don't know if he thought we were doing it for the reason we were or what, but it was just weird. Why look angry at us? For all he knew maybe he just didn't see everyone or we were picking someone up. He has no idea we know a bit about his background at all. Oh the crap that has been happening since we got here! It's just been something with them every day. None of them work and are such homebodies...and every day is a saturday for them. They're in their forties/fifties but act like teenaged delinquents. They're never indoors. Hardly ever indoors. The couple practically live on their porch and Frito practically lives in his shed. Always on the look out and ready for people who pull up to them and these people never stay...always leave shortly after they arrive.

Hubby is looking into some cameras to install with FTTP services that aren't too costly for our budget. Can anyone suggest a really good one that isn't too pricey? We know nothing about this stuff. We don't need all the bells and whistles. Something that will record for us just in case we need evidence would be great. Indoor and outdoor.

I looked into what we could do with help from the police but unless we have some proof nothing can really be done. That's what a friend that's also a cop told us. However, they are patrolling our streets more and have been really great about that. It has been a bit better since that began just this past week. There's less sneaking around late at nights. No more drive thru services like there was. A few people have pulled up at Frito's but they leave awful fast. No more sneaking around in the woods next to us in the dark. No more rock throwing at our house from a distance! They've been doing some seriously stupid crap but it's been a bit better since the police patrols started. I'm hoping they'll do something stupid and maybe patrol will see some of what we see.

For a while the husband of the couple next door was parking his vehicle anywhere but at his house. He quit doing that when patrol started but I wonder how long it will last. It was weird and went on every day for weeks. He'd either park it at Frito's house or a nearby business and walk home leaving it there. Hubby asked him if he's leaving his truck there because Frito may be working on it for him. He said no. And he just kept parking it there and would walk home which is quite a distance. Even in the pouring rain. (Frito wasn't using it. He's got his own very nice expensive vehicle and how he got that vehicle since he doesn't work, no one knows! We asked.) There's nothing wrong with this guy's truck. It would just sit there for days at a time mostly. He'd walk over to visit Frito and back home, many times in one day...short little visits. Sometimes he'd walk to his truck parked at the business and drive to visit Frito, drive it back to the business lot, park it there and walk back home! Just to visit Frito for five minutes!! They go in Frito's shed to visit always, never in the house. He hardly goes anywhere in his truck, but once in a blue moon he'll go somewhere but bring it right back to anywhere but his place and park it, as if he's hiding it. At the business he parks it at sometimes, he doesn't work there (he has no job either). When he was leaving it there it was always at nights or when the business wasn't open during the day or on weekends. We're guessing because Frito maybe needed more parking space for company because whenever his company would leave, that guy would bring his truck right back, park it at Frito's, and walk back to his home. We've wondered if maybe he's hiding it or perhaps using it as a drop off or pick up point for drugs. When patrol started he took his truck home and parked it in his own driveway for one day. Since that day it's been gone...for two or three days now. It's as if no one is home but they could be just laying low. The timing is wild. I was hoping patrol would see him walking around like that and ask him what the heck he's doing? Especially at 2 and 3 in the morning... and this would go on all week, every single danged day. Foot traffic or cars all hours of the day and night. Back and forth. One day we were doing a lot of yard work and we saw the guy walk back and forth to Frito's and his own home 7 or 8 times just during the day. He came in his truck parked at the business down the road once, and put it right back. Later that night we were sitting on our porch and saw him come and go three times at night.

We've seen a lot of weird stuff between these two neighbors over the past 5 weeks or so. You'd think a drug dealer would chill out if they thought the people around them were on to them, but they instead get angry and do stuff that confirms suspicions that they're doing something illegal. They throw rocks at our house from a distance. Anytime we go out on that side of our yard near them they sick their dogs on us or start slamming things around cussing really loud. One day I thought the woman was going to break her broom sweeping her porch like mad while we were so close to them and she was fuming cuss words about nosy f'in neighbors... and all we were doing was mowing our yard. A car pulled up one time and decided to turn around in their drive way and oh my gosh I thought they were going to go nuts over it. After the car left it was "Who was that? What the f were they up to?!" And it was just some guy turning around in their driveway. These people are obviously doing something illegal and are crazy idiots.

Would appreciate any advice or if anyone can point me to some background services that actually find everything a concerned neighbor would like to know.

I think it would be a comfort just to talk to someone who has dealt with this. I'm glad it's quieter now due to the police patrols, but they're trying to find ways to work around it, as usual. Relentless idiots! Hubby is dealing with it pretty well but it's getting old to me. I hope to goodness the patrols make them want to move...but Frito won't go anywhere. He's got it made where he is and he's not leaving it.

Nora, forget the dummy camera.  You need something that will collect real evidence.  Two options are available.

1.  Go to a Bass Pro Shop or order online a couple of wildlife cams.  Get the ones that record video.  They are motion activated and are quiet and use night vision technology.  Most are camouflage so maybe you could tie them up in some trees where they wouldn't be seen.  You want to put them where you know they can record whatever is going on.  A single quality camera will run up to $180.  You might find them cheaper online.

2.  A surveillance kit can be purchased that will allow you to watch every room of your home while you are away.  Hubby has installed these before with the average price being $1000 for a 3000 sq ft home.  Some home owners insurance will give you a percentage discount just like they do with a security system.  Great thing about this is that you can check from your smart phone as well as any online computer no matter where you are.  And backing it up to a hard drive provides evidence should you have a break-in or any other trouble.  I know it is expensive, but maybe if you search online you can find a used kit for sale.

Hope this helps a little.  Of course, you could give them a little something to worry about.  You and hubby could start doing your own 'crazy' stuff and have them wondering if you're about to go postal on the neighborhood.  Dress in monkey suits and sit by the street throwing bananas at passerbys.  lol

Thanks for the advice KittyMom. Hubby thought the dressing like monkeys and throwing bananas was funny. We are making our presence known outdoors more than usual. We've been working on flower beds, sitting out on the porch, etc... They finally stopped cussing loudly after a few days of it.

I'm definitely saving up for the video cam you mentioned. It will take me a while to buy something like that but I think it would be worth it. I don't think a camera taking stil pics would quite capture the throwing of rocks and other things like video could. Thanks for the ideas. We asked the electric company to come out and put up a safety light for us for one particular dark corner in the front yard and maybe will light up the woods some too. They're putting that up next week and the electrician gave hubby some other great ideas for installing lights on the house we hadn't thought of that will cost us less. I think if we just had more light I could capture the rock throwing etc with my hand held digital camera, but I just need more light. That stuff always happens at night or from a distance that we can't see cause there's a hill in the way or something like that. It may stop altogether once the light goes up which would be wonderful. A friend in LE told us that if there's more than one of them throwing those rocks and other things at us, which often it is both of them (the couple), that they could be considered a gang and the laws would hit them harder... if they're ever caught of course.

A friend of the family is helping hubby set up an indoor surveillance so that we can view the place while we're away and record it on a server for us too. It will be a while but it's on its way and already offers some relief. It won't be anything fancy but I told them I don't care, as long as it works. We're looking into how to protect our windows while we're all away from the house, just in case someone tries to break in. I'd rather them not get in at all but in case they do, that indoor surveillance is a great idea.

It just blows my mind that this kind of thing goes on with a head start program right down the road from us. And there are kids all over the neighborhood that ride their bikes. I plan on mentioning that when we meet with our patrol officer. It seems to me someone should know this has been going on and continues to near a headstart program.

I was a little surprised at the outcome of the John Edward's trial too, but more than anything, he's guilty of being a jerk. Through the public trial, we all learned just how much of a jerk he is, and in many ways he'll serve under that sentence for life. The stuff that has come to light will follow him for the rest of his life, IMO.

Did anybody watch the "Hatfield and McCoys" 3 night mini series on The History Channel? I had to record it and catch it when I could, but Kevin Costner did a great job in it and I learned a lot! I always thought the feud was more legendary and folklore than anything else and probably blown all out of proportion, but I was wrong! Some of the basis for the feud went to the US Supreme court! The full episodes are watchable on the History Channel's website, and I'd recommend it to anybody with any interest at all. It was a great cast too and very well documented.

Thanks CBB, I'd noticed it being advertised and had planned on watching...Will be easier to watch on puter as hubby takes up occupancy in the evenings of the big screen TV and I always fall asleep if I try watching in the bedroom.

I watched all 3 nights.  I have to admit it was a very good mini series.  Did you know it was filmed in Romania?  I have to say those mountains are NOT the Appalachian mountains.  I thought it was filmed out west but read up on it and it was filmed out of the U.S.

I have read up a lot on the Hatfields and McCoys and the show changed some stuff:  like, Roseanna, she lived at the hatfields for a while and then her mother sent her sisters to bring her home.  She contracted measles while living in her parents home and miscarried her baby, not giving birth at her aunt's house and the baby dieing a year later.  Johnsie and her was more a sexual thing, not Romero and Juliet.  She was more than 5 years older than Johnsie (he was 18, she was 23).  He was not smitten with her except in a sexual way and she supposedly had Gonorrhea from all her "encounters" with the local boys and may explain why she became so ill and died at an early age.  So they romanticized it a lot when it came to Roseanna and Johnsie.  The pictures of them leave a lot to be desired, not very pretty or handsome in my book. But, all-in-all, it was a good mini-series and most everyone I know here in Kentucky watched it and had good comments on it.  I think Kevin Costner was really good and Bill Paxton was good also. 

I watched all 3 episodes. It was very well made and I learned a lot! It also prompted me to do a little more research on the feud and the geography of the Kentucky - West Virginia border. While I wouldn't say it was another documentary on a par with Ken Burn's "Baseball", it was a great "docudrama" and perfect for The History Channel.

Really was worth watching, have never liked Kevin Costner but have to say he did a good job on this one.   Watching it on the puter made for a long evening but it was commerical free.

I was just telling my ten year old on the way to school that today starts hurricane season.  I love storms!  I am also praying for safety for all in the "danger zone." 

Ohhhhh.............. I LOVED Ken Burn's "Baseball"! You didn't have to be a sport's fan to appreciate it. It was almost a reflection of America itself. Did you ever watch his Civil War series? It was unbelievably great! If they taught history in school like that, the SAT scores would skyrocket and we'd have a lot of kids turned on by school instead of turned off. JMO.

I had briefly looked up a few things as I watched and knew that Johnsie and Roseanne weren't exactly as portrayed, but didn't know the details you provided. I agree with you, BTW. Those aren't our mountains. I kept looking for the lush green scenery and it just wasn't there. I remember when I first saw "The Last of the Mohicans", I knew immediately upon the first scenes that it had been filmed close by. Sure enough, the location was Western North Carolina and the Appalachains. I'm biased, but I think the beauty of what we have is really unique. Lots of people are surprised to learn that our climate is officially "Humid Sub Tropical". It doesn't sound like that climate should include the oldest Mountain Range in the country and winter snow, but it makes the mountains so incredibly lush green and vibrant in summer.

Yes!!! -- anything by Ken Burns is fantastic!! I agree, schools would do well to re-think how history is taught. I really enjoy a good "docudrama" to be both entertaining yet educational at the same time!  ::rhino::

CBB, I have GenealogyBank.com which has newspapers from all the U.S. that dates back to the 1700's.  I did a search on the Hatfields and the the McCoys and read some of the newspaper articles dating in the 1880-s up to 1920's when Anse Hatfield died.  These articles are all over the place.  Their accounts of what happened differ from newspapers in the North, newspapers in the South, whether the newspaper was West Virginia or whether it was Kentucky.  Devil Anse even did vadilvil act in the early 1900's before he died sometime around 1920.  The only thing they agree on in any of the accounts is how violent that period in history was for both families.  So I really don't know if anyone really knows what happened.

I thought like you Muffy the reason we were seeing all these horrible cases was because of instant communications. Without getting on a soap box I believe our society has become such a throw society from goods to human life. People don't take responsibility for their actions any more. We see it daily. There is always an excuse way or they blame someone else for their actions.  I don't believe many are being taught right from wrong at home any more. I agree, GE. The fundamental "rights and wrongs" are giving way to blaming others, entitlement, and "my way by any means." It's so very sad and the tragedies just keep coming and coming. Somehow children seem to be targets. Maybe it's because those with dark hearts can't handle the innocence of a child. It's heartbreaking.

I agree with you all.  We have a society that is based on relativism -- no right or wrong.  We also have lost the smallest component of a civilization, the family unit.  Children are being raised by the government, in which everything is relative, instead of 2 parents

NEW YORK (AP) – Americans are in for a cyber-surprise on Wednesday: They'll be able to plug family names into an online 1940 U.S. Census and come up with details about the lives of New Yorkers— from Joe DiMaggio and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy to their own relatives.
Starting after midnight, it will no longer be essential to provide exact addresses from seven decades ago to look for a New York connection.

With names, free searches of the 1940 U.S. Census first made public in April will unlock personal information about residents of New York — then the largest U.S. state and an immigrant hub from which people moved all over the country.
ensus experts say the New York data is of national interest because tens of millions of Americans have roots in this gateway to the United States through Ellis Island, and many can now dig for more personal information.

"That's the exciting aspect about this — the ability to search the lifetime of our mothers and fathers," said Debra Braverman, a New York-based independent forensic genealogist with clients seeking information for trust funds and estates.

When the Census was first released, "if you didn't know exactly where someone lived in 1940, you couldn't find them," Braverman said.

Indexing by name is crucial to cracking the until-now closed book of that year's Census, which by law could not be released for 72 years and is therefore the most recently available one.

This U.S. Census leads to China.

Some of the work of transcribing handwritten Census records into a computerized index was done by workers in an office outside the southern city of Dongguan with "very strong character recognition abilities," said Todd Jensen, who heads the document preservation service at Ancestry.com, a Provo, Utah-based family history company that's releasing the online New York Census for 1940 using their new name index.

"Given the complexity of their own language, reading and recognizing characters from other languages comes easier," he said.

Also Wednesday, another historic treasure trove appears on the Internet for the first time: Census information compiled separately by New York state for 1915 and 1925, indexed by name. These records include details about famed personalities such as Lauren Bacall, Al Capone, Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Houdini, who according to the 1925 Census was born in the United States, even though most biographies say he was born in Hungary.

The interest in roots is so intense that 37 million hits temporarily crashed the National Archives provider site when the 1940 Census was released on April 2. Many who logged on hoping for results hit the wall, frustrated for lack of specific locations required for results.

The New York world of the 1940 Census includes names that later became famous, including Katharine Hepburn, John D. Rockefeller Jr., J.D. Salinger, Kennedy and Ella Fitzgerald.

The 1940 Census by name index will be available for all states possibly as early as this fall.

While New York is the biggest state whose Census records are already name-indexed, a number of smaller states also have been made name-accessible by Ancestry.com and two other companies, FamilySearch.org and MyHeritage.com.

New York state censuses for 1915 and 1925 are available online for the first time via a link that says "find family history for free" to anyone providing a New York ZIP code and email address.

The state censuses show "every New Yorker from the famous to the infamous to everybody in between," said Kathleen Roe, director of archives and records management at the New York State Archives.

The censuses released this week offer "one of the greatest collections of historic voices you'll ever find," said Roe, adding that if read together, they trace whole families as they move around.

The Census data also include such information as occupation, whether immigrants were naturalized citizens, and whether they owned or rented their homes — in other words, sketches of communities, said David M. Kleiman, president of Heritage Muse Inc., a New York-based genealogy technology firm.

I will always be grateful to you for your idea, frozen water in the plastic bags; you saw it on the weather channel. I needed and used your suggestion twice, the first time the power did not go out and I passed the frozen water bags to another, whose power did go out at that time. The frozen bag technique came handy on another storm, I use it after when the electricity went off for a week because of another storm.  I was told it was a good idea, I mentioned you gave me it :) Thank-you, again.

I was actually thinking, I should bag up water in recycled plastic bags, and put them in the freezer, (in case) of another Spring storm, like, last year's.
 
I (believe) I used Aldi's 7in x 73/4 inc bags, they worked out well with the double strip on top of the bag. I was asked the person that I gave the frozen bags to, if I wanted the water bags, back, to refreeze, I said, yes, but I was vetoed down, so I just accepted the empty bags, back.

I just read another idea; it is not new, but new to me, to freeze water bottles or empty drinking plastic bottles with water, in your freezer. 

I have the empty plastic bottles you an redeem for 5 cents at Wall mart. However, for the other bottles that cannot be redeemed, (or, redeemed, in another state), I may just keep those on the side too, just in case, to pop in the freezer or even freeze them now.

Your tip was good  to leave about a couple inches of space, from the top of the plastic water bags, before freezing; I would like the same stands for plastic water bottles, in the freezer.

I probably have people on the net, panicky for a storm :)

Seahorse  That sounds like a good idea. I would think the same would hold true for the bottles too. There has to be air flow in the freezer compartment.  Just heard we are in for some bad storms the next couple days. Hope you don't have any bad weather. ::MonkeyWink::

It was awesome Seahorse. I love storms. Most of the lightning was cloud to cloud with it dancing across the sky every which way. With a few to the ground. Wish I would have had one of my grand kids with me so they could have taken pictures while we were driving.

It's been a long time since I posted on this board. Been extra busy for a few months, and continue to be, just came to check this old hangout.

One thing that surprised me is that it's getting harder to find the website. I checked Google for Scared Monkeys, and went to the .com, which is more of a news outlet, now.  Not sure if it always was, but just noticed.

I then found the chat button, way down the page, which directed me to the .net site. Since I had erased all my bookmarks, I had to find the topic manually, and it was hard.

I noticed Scared Monkeys is now on Facebook. I hope this website is not replaced by Facebook, since this is more organized, and there is lots of archived information.

Anyway, just jotting my thoughts, no controversy intended.

I read your posts, when I can, even if I'm not posting.

I can't complain though, I love this time of the year.  Our meal today consisted of fresh green beans with new potatoes, sliced tomatoes, fried "peaches and cream" corn, fried cornbread (my parents called them ho-cakes or cornbread pancakes), grilled flat-iron steak and grilled chicken breast.  Next I will have fresh cantoloupes and fresh peaches. I just love when vegetables start coming in.  Nothing better!

Morning Monkeys  ::HelloKitty:: Hope all our Florida Monkeys are okay. That you are staying dry and no tornado's around you. Spoke with MIL last night. She has been getting rain, rain & rain and they had 4 tornado's in her county.

I hope all Florida monkey's are safe and keeping an eye on the weather.  I just heard they have declared a state of emergency, I guess it was because of the large amounts of rain they are receiving.

We are having our August heat-wave in June.  This is what our weather forecast is for the next few days:

We need rain very bad but a high pressure system is going to block any rain from the storm.  The only thing we are watering right now is the tomatoes and my mums and flower beds.  If this keeps up for very long they will stop us from watering anything.

 

Florida is excepted to get another 15 inches of rain by tomorrow on top of the 15 inches they have already gotten. The top of the state up around Panama City over to Tallahassee and the Central part of the state seem to be getting hit the hardest.  Prayers every one is safe.

We hit 103 here today in North Texas 106 tomorrow. I guess summer is here.

 I've had some strange ones pop up lately, hubs just says cancel or click out of anything I'm not sure of.....getting as bad as all the spam that fills our mail.....

When a pop up shows up on my screen, I do the following:

--with one finger, press and hold down the alt key
--with another finger, tap the f4 (function key; top row) once

The pop up should disappear.  Repeat this procedure every time a pop up appears.  It works for me.   

I've been told never to click on anything within the pop up.

Is there a place here on SM that I can ask a legal question (Estate) and see if anyone has an answer?  I respect the opinions of my fellow monkeys and I know that I would receive excellent feedback. Thanks in advance.

Oh good...thanks!  I'm just going to copy and paste what I had previously typed out in my email (I am kind of upset tonight because I found out that he borrowed 88,000 against the house and still hasn't given me anything else).

My mother passed away in November of lung cancer. She became ill in May 2010. It traveled to her brain in April 2011. I am adopted and my brother is biological, I am older. I live out of state (since age 18). My brother has always lived with her (he is 30). My Mom bought a house with cash (2007-from her Mom's property-157,000). She has said that she was going to split money between my brother and I, but decided instead to invest it into a home. The intentions were either my brother would buy my portion of the house out once he improved his credit or they would help me to pay my bills over the years. My brother states that Mom didn't have to pay anything during the four years they lived in the house together, but her checkbook says different. I see in some months where Mom gave him 600-700 dollars. In April 2011, my brother talked Mom into signing the house over to him (Warranty Deed) and her truck. Now, this is the same week that the doctor found cancer in her brain. I am not sure if she was on any medication at this time. My brother did not tell me until the week before she died. So I could not ask her about it. He said they did that in case she had to go into a nursing home. When Mom was placed on hospice, I left my job out of state and took care of her the last five weeks, so that they could work and I could spend time with her. The life insurance was initially to be split between us, but my brother signed his over to me a few weeks before she passed. This equaled 38,000. He also gave me the truck 5,000. He also said that he would take a loan out for 10,000 to make it a little bit more fair (he did not give me this and has no intentions of this). Even though I knew that it wasn't fair, I agreed to it. That was until he didn't stick to his end of it. I disagreed with all of this, but just wanted to keep the peace and be there for Mom. There is no written agreement anywhere for the 10,000 (he also said that he would only get that amount because he would have to pay it back times three). When I confronted him about this, he said that there was a will that left me even less than I received. But nothing has been filed that I am aware of. She also had a retirement account that I never saw or asked about. Mom's intentions were for us to equally split everything, she has said this for years. They (my brother and his wife, as of July 2011) say that I am not entitled to as much because I wasn't around. I was around just not in state. She kept saying she just wanted everything to be fair (prior to passing). I feel that my brother took advantage of her. I want to see if I have a case. As a single mom I do not want to waste the money that I do have on attorney fees if I have little chance of "winning." Also, if there is a will wouldn't they need to file it? I don't think that is fair to hide it and use it to their advantage if I retain an attorney. I need to mention also that he is saying that debt collectors are coming after him for her debt (30,000) (I told him that I would gladly help pay anything, he says no-personally I don't believe he is paying). #2  So he is saying that she signed over the entire home to him?  That sounds like alot of BS to me too. 
#3  It might be worth it to find a good family law attorney, bite the bullet and pay the $300 an hour or whatever he would charge for a consultation.  He could probably tell you if it's worth your while to pursue it.

What state you lived in has nothing to do with how much you deserve.  Your mothers wishes are everything but I know people when they are ill can sign things they don't fully understand.

I had a situation where a family member had my mother make some changes to her trust when she was in no position to.  Most of it we couldn't do a thing about.  This person made himself the executor of the remaining trusts.  As it turns out, he was paying himself as trustee way more than he was allowed.  One of my sisters and I went to a family law attorney and he sent a letter and this person agreed to step down as executor and pay back the trust $80k.  It was either that or we would take him to court which could result in criminal charges.

So it can be done but it's not pretty and not cheap.  It was worth it in our case but each case is different.  If you are talking about $10k, probably not worth it.  But if there is a possibility of 1/2 of the value of the home and life insurance, then maybe worth it. 

Different laws in different states.  Cost of attorneys vary as well. 

So bottom line is this, if you are wanting to get the 10k out of your brother I doubt you'll get it unless voluntarily from him.  If it's more then you probably should at least ask an attorney what he thinks.

Thank you for taking the time to offer feedback.  It really does help to hear someone else's take on it.  Mom lived in Oklahoma.  I never wanted half...I know that he was up there with Mom (even though SHE took care of HIM).  He did the little things like change her oil...pick her up from somewhere...and so on...I just wanted him to follow through with what he said.  A part of me wants to go for half now...but, another part of me says KARMA will give him exactly what he gave plus some.  I only have two years to take him to court.  I think that I will fly in and at least speak with an attorney.  Thanks again, Klaas.

I'm so sorry for your loss, labubske.

Sadly, I've had to handle the estates of both my Mom and Dad, and I'll try to offer you a few things that might help. First, purely from a legal perspective, it doesn't matter who spent time with her or even what she wanted. It does matter if your Mom had a Last Will and Testimony and if so, what it says. Whatever she gave your brother while she was alive was her choice, unless you could prove she was impaired mentally. If you had contact with her after the cancer metastasized  to her brain, you might be able to make a determination about that. Speaking with her Oncologist could also be helpful in that regard.

If there is a Will, as he said, you are certainly entitled to a copy of it. Someone should be named in it to be the administrator or executor of her estate (I forget which is which, but one is for the person charged with carrying out the wishes of the deceased as outlined in the Will, and the other is the one charged with discharging an estate where there is no Will according to State Law in such matters). Either way, someone is named to discharge the Estate and that comes with obligations. If your Mom didn't name him, then you are just as qualified as he is to be that person. If you and he can't agree about that, a court can settle that for you.

A Will has to be probated and that involves filing the Will in public records. Here, that's at the courthouse of the county seat. First, the executor must be able to show that all of her debts have been paid and that includes burial expenses. After that, her assets must be distributed according to the Will. Just keep in mind that unless she legally directed otherwise, you are entitled to everything he is, EQUALLY. Part of being an executor is being able to clearly show to all heirs exactly where her estate has been/is being distributed and that starts with an inventory of what the assets are. The life insurance is interesting. I'm not quite sure how he "signed over" that to you before her death. Most life insurance has a specific named beneficiary and collecting always requires a certified death certificate. Your brother is obligated to supply invoices and receipts of bills paid on her behalf, banking records of account balances at the time of her death, an inventory of her home (if she owned it) and household goods, etc. I'd check to see when the house deed was registered in his name. That might prove interesting.

If you don't want to contact a lawyer right now, it might be very enlightening to simply call the Office of Public Records at the County Seat of where your Mother died, and ask how you go about administering your Mother's Will. I would just tell them that your Mom is very ill and you don't know what to do when she passes. Whatever process they tell you is exactly the process your brother should be following. They might also instruct you how to go about checking that deed, too.

I'm sure that others can offer more help, labubske. I'm so sorry you're going through this, but if your hinky meter is up over your brother's handling of this, my instincts say listen to it! Best wishes this all works out as it should!

Thank you CBB.  I certainly appreciate you taking the time to respond.  I am going to call the courthouse this morning. I did explain the life insurance part wrong...sorry about that.  Mom had each of us getting half.  He had Mom make me the beneficiary of all of that (38,000).  Likewise, he had Mom sign a Warranty Deed giving him the house when she died.  I am not familiar with Warranty Deed's so I do not know how they work when someone dies.  He had her do that so in case she had to go into a nursing home (that is what he told me)...yet, later said it was to keep the house out of probate.  So all in all her intentions were not to give the house to my brother...but to keep it out of probate.  I am guessing that she assumed he would make everything fair.  For example, instead of taking out a loan against the house for 88,000 and buy two new cars...he could have made things fair between he and I.  I just don't want to spend money that I do have and waste it on something that I have no chance at making right.

I ended up with 43,000 (life insurance and truck)
He ended up with 159,000 (home that is paid for and a couple thousand in retirement)

It doesn't seem fair.  That's all.  I miss my Mom more than the money...and would give it all back just to see her again.

People, I don't know about any of you but where I live it is 106 degrees and it is bloody hot hot hot.  Everything is burned.  Our tomatoes just started coming in and we are keeping them watered.  They are loaded and I don't wont to lose them. 

They have put a burn ban on and that means NO fireworks at all except the city sponsored fireworks.  Now you know kids will still go ahead and shoot off fireworks even though they have been told not to.  Now we have to really keep a close eye on these fireworks landing on our house or in our burnt up yard and catching it on fire.  Everything is a tinderbox right now.  No rain in sight.  If we can hold out til next Wed. it is suppose to be 98 degrees.   Geesh, I never thought I would consider 98 as cool!

But you know it is really a bit scary with temps this high and everything so burned up.  I live a 9/10 of a mile from the volunteer fire department and they are running in and out every day.  They just went out not more than 10 minutes ago.  When it gets this hot every thing can ignite so fast and you have to keep your eyes open for fires.  I read in our newspaper the other day that mulch caught on fire under a porch and they had to call the fire dept. out before their house caught on fire.  Scary.

Blue Moon  That's what we have had for a couple weeks now. Today it only got to 103. Then we drop to a cool 97/99. Yippee.  I don't go out unless I have to. I feel for you. That's how we were last year for the 4th. This year we have had enough rain so the kids can have their fireworks. But a couple more weeks of this heat and we will be on a burn ban once again. Thanks, green eyes.  We go to my brothers every 4th of July and their entire neighborhood does fireworks.  I haven't talked to him to see how he is taking it that they cannot do their fireworks.  Heck, they are saying the fines can reach $500.  But like I said, kids will still do it and I just know they will catch something on fire.  It is way too early for these high temps.  We usually have maybe 100 degrees in mid to late August, not January.

It's so hard when you enjoy the 4th and can't do the fireworks. When we lived in Calif. The whole family would get together and do the BBQ and swimming etc. Then sit for hours and do fireworks. As every body would go crazy and bring some. So much fun. And wonderful memories. Prayers no one starts a fire.  As hot as it's been here in Texas this year it's not as bad as last year. It started in May and didn't end until Sept. Tell your brother to just save everything for next year and have double the fun.

My Brother is as big a kid as the 15-18 year olds.  He is probably taking it really hard on the ban.

It is currently 110 degrees. I have never seen the radar show a pink haze all over our area.  Weird.

I turned everybody loose about an hour ago and told them to go home and MAKE SURE their dogs were inside!! Whew........it's HOT!

I am washing all my bed cloths and regular wash and instead of tying up the dryer with all the sheets, pillow case etc I am hanging them outside and it is only taking about 10 minutes or less to dry all those cloths that would take at least 45 minutes per load.

FWIW - they outlawed personal fireworks in almost all of our cities years ago.  I used to LOVE setting off the fireworks!

Yes they have. There are only a couple places that still allow them. At least there were last year.  I enjoy watching them and watching the kids enjoy them. I figured after preparing all the food etc. It was hubs turn and I would sit back with a cool drink and watch and relax. ::MonkeyWink::

Yikes Blue Moon that's hot. Stay cool. Your poor brother sounds like my oldest brother. That's sweet he enjoys it so much. Are they banning the city fireworks too? They even cancelled all the city fireworks here last year. We had crazy neighbors last year that thought it would be okay to set off bottle rockets. I was very glad when they moved.

No, the city fireworks continue---it will be at the Corvette Museum and the city fire department will be there to help in case of any problems.

The Barren River lake will have their fireworks but it is down by the water's edge and they will also have local fire dept's there to help out.

So I guess if we want to have fireworks this year we have to go to one or the other location.

We used to go across the Tennessee state line and buy "real" fireworks because they were illegal here.  Boy, we could get some really good fireworks.  We used to live a few houses down from my parents and we would gather after dark with those illegal fireworks and set them off until they were all gone.  Well my father could not sleep because we were setting off fireworks so here he comes walking to our house.  My brother said, Oh, here comes Daddy, watch this!  Well he shot a bottle rocket toward my father and it hit his new pair of shorts and my father was furious.  If it had been anyone other than "his baby" (because he was the youngest in the family) he would have killed us.  That is where my brother got his passion for fireworks is from me and my hubby!!!!! They have all 10 volunteer fire dept's and the city's fire department there. 

So far no one around here is setting off fireworks.  They are getting reports that people are setting off fireworks still and they call the police dept. and they say they can't do anything unless they catch them setting them off.  We have a ban and you can be fined upwards of $500
for setting them off and they won't do anything. 

They have a man on a tractor out in the field and they can't get his attention to get him out of there.  Surely he will see the smoke and flames.

Oh well, it is now 101* and we are under an excessive heat warning.  Heck, 101 is a whole lot better than 110*! 

Sometimes plowing furrows is a way to make a fire break.  I wonder if that's what he's trying to do?  He should get out of there, no telling how fast fire can travel.  From what I understand, the only safe place to be would be where it's already burned black.

They did get it under control.  Turns out it was bales of hay that spontaneously caught fire.  We are "maybe" suppose to have 30% chance of rain for the next 3 days---hey, that's better than nothing!

Temps are suppose to be in the mid to upper 90's so that will help some.

We just have to keep our eyes out for fireworks now through Thursday.

I hope you don't have the stifling heat that we have had.  It is awful!

It's hot, but today we're supposed to stay out of triple digits. The high today will be in the high 90's and it stormed for hours last night so this morning there was a little break in the heaviness in the air. Honestly, I had the little one at the park yesterday morning and it took me all day to get over it. I just couldn't seem to get a full breath for the rest of the day. The humidity remains high and that's really hard on anyone with respiratory problems.

I think you'll be fine. As the week goes on, we're supposed to be closer to normal. If you're going to be walking around much, dress for heat and slip a water bottle in your purse! Plan on time to get out of the sun during the afternoon hours.

I'm glad they were able to contain the fire in your neck of the woods, Blue Moon! We needed the rain we got last night and I'm hoping the risk of fire is less today because of it!

Those Midwest storms came down South, and we got them this morning. Winds have died down, they were about 60 MPH in gusts. Wicked weather we been having all over.

Hi there....I should have come back to let you know that I am not still

It's an addiction. Their mind is sorta locked inside their tiny phones, and it's like the world around them doesn't exist.

Sort of like the computer addiction I had a few years ago. But, with the computer addiction one stays inside the home and harms nobody, other than gaining some weight and ruining the back.

Something has to be done, just not sure what. The local base gives tickets to people using their cellphone while driving, even if the phones are used for just talking. Not sure if the cities can do that without a congressional act.

I think of people walking, and dogs, and a ninety-year old driver on the road.  A texter is who I will be put on my list of priorities. Thanks for being it to my attention.

If a kid is driving the parents car, and texts, I would think parents could be sued like any minor who gets into an accident.

But, if the minor is texting in his or her car, would the parents be held accountable for their

I got an email from my brother and he was on his way down to Townsend, TN where the storms hit the other day.  He did not know how much damage his camper/trailer took.  He is suppose to let me know once he gets back home.

Hi all. I've been missing for a while but back catching up on news/cases/etc... Good to be back in the cage.

While catching up I thought I'd swing over here and ask for advice again about something I already shared about some here.

If you have neighbors harrassing you constantly, you have some evidence of it on video with audio, and after four calls to LE about it the officer says to take it to magistrate court. You call magistrate court and are told there's not really anything you can do but hire a lawyer to sue... you explain that the officer assured that magistrate court would have more ideas on options about what to do but are told, "honey, that's what they all say"... would that make sense to you? It doesn't to me or my husband.

And on the fourth visit out, LE arrested one of them. Turns out the reason they acted so violent every time we would simply cut the grass or open the curtains, getting anywhere near their place for any reason or looking out our back windows was because the woman was hiding out as there was a warrant for her in another county. This time, the fourth time we called for help, this officer had suspicions, asked for id, checked them out and found out about the warrant. He told us they both told him they wouldn't bother us anymore because they plan on moving but they're still there. They've stopped ranting threats and such, but this woman is a hot headed nut case. After finding out their names we did our own digging and found she's got a violent past, he's been in trouble with drugs and is a theif, and both
are repeat offenders for quite some years now. They're renting so not sure why the moving is taking so long. Did some digging on the place they're renting and found out that the past several tenants that have rented there were arrested for anything from meth to even impersonating a police officer!

We've got a security camera on every corner of the place outside and asked for police patrols... but after nearly three months of their behavior, we feel sure she's not finished with us yet and her stupid boyfriend/husband will go along with whatever she wants to do like he always does.

Anyone know what we can do to further protect ourselves from these nuts? I felt sure going to magistrate would have offered us something... like a peace warrant, if they're still called that? Anyone have ideas?

I would suggest a Priest.  If I were in your shoes, I would approach a good priest and ask
him to bless both houses and both yards.  He may not be able to walk on to their property,
but he may be able to sprinkle holy water in their direction :)

He left and did not return. The fruitcake, came over and apologized, I told her, I told the cop you lied,  she said, she knows, he told her.  You alway's need a witness.

We have been discussing asking our priest to come out and bless our place the past few days... and Father often slings pretty far, he has quite an arm.  ::MonkeyHaHa:: It's just quite a distance for Father to have to drive. He'd do it and happily but with gas prices and all... I'm thinking we should offer to drive him out here and back.

I'm going to look for our own Infant of Prague... we have the perfect place for it back there.  ::MonkeyWink::  That's a good idea. Maybe a Saint Joseph too!

So glad you had a witness! If you lie to police here they'll lock you up, so she was lucky that didn't happen. The first officer that came out to help us said to never have any encounters with them at all and to not even tell them "I'm calling the police." So we've never said a word to them. We have cameras everywhere witnessing everything. Wish we had the funds to do that sooner than we did. The cameras we have not only see all but hear it all too... and it's all recorded around the clock. They complained to the officer about it when they found out we have videos of the stuff they've been doing and that the officer saw it. The officer told them "They have a right to protect their home." You can't hear what they say at their home, just muffled sounds, but when they scream threats and fight like they do... it picks up every word.

A friend gave me a number for legal aid. I'm going to call and see if they can offer any insight. Hopefully it's cheap or even better, free. It seems to me we have enough proof to get some kind of peace warrant or whatever they're called now.

Edited to add:  The coolest thing happened when he first took off from the nest.  He landed on the ground and could only get up in the air for a couple seconds.  So he kept trying but was headed out towards the busy street out in front of our house.  WELL, all of a sudden about 8 adult sparrows dropped down to the ground and "herded" him away from the street into some planters and trees.  IT WAS SO COOL!

I think I know a few of those nuns you mentioned.  ::MonkeyHaHa::  I went to your regular run of the mill public school but in the 70's you were still afraid of getting paddled by your teacher or going to the principal's office. It's wild because by the time I was in highschool in the 80's, no fear of any teacher/principal/superintendent. What a change just in that time span. By the time my kids started kindergarten, it was shocking how kids behaved and now... you just wonder how much worse it's going to get. We homeschooled our kids... and it worked out good....where my kids would get sent to the daddy/principal's office. ::MonkeyWink:: They didn't turn out perfect but they respect others and keep their noses clean.

The last time an officer came out he said we should call the local drug unit and tell them what we've been seeing. We left a message at the number he gave us over a week ago and got a call to come in and talk with someone. So wednesday we talked with a detective. Nice guy too. He listened to everything we told him, wrote down names, and seemed really interested in one name in particular for some reason. He told us if they give us any further trouble to call police. We told him we've already called so many times and that we've been referred to magistrate court about the problem. He just shook his head and said, "Call the police on them again if they do anything else. That's what we're here for." He said if an officer complains to us about it, (like one of them did), he said to call their supervisor about it. I'm going to wait and see what legal aid says though, just to be on the safe side. It was a good meeting with the detective. He asked a lot of questions and listened to everything we shared with him. We asked just out of curiosity what will they do and he of course wouldn't go into it much but said it can be anything from stopping on the street to check for license/insurance to knocking on the door and asking if they're selling. He made a face while he said that so... we didn't pry any further. A face like "I can't really share that much with you, you know?"

The street patrols we had requested stopped a week ago but yesterday we saw a patrol car going by slowly. We didn't request they extend it. They're on the drug unit radar.

I know a gal that simply got her facts wrong about a situation and got arrested for lying to police in our area several years ago. Too bad they don't take it seriously like that with your forked tongue neighbor.

I am wondering if a baby monitor may be able to pick up more sound though. I think I'll check out the next yard sale or thrift store I'm near and see if I can pick one up. Maybe they can pick up sound better than our cams. Thanks for the idea.

Thank you for praying, Seahorse. I appreciate that very much. Our priest situation is still on hold. One is on vacation until the end of next week and the other has his schedule full until then also. We picked a busy time to finally decide on that one. We should have requested the blessing as soon as the trouble started. It's been quiet around here for the past few days though and that's a miracle!

What a good story! From a bird lover, thank you for sharing that with us! Those baby birds can make one worry! We have some baby cardinals we're watching outside our place every day lately. Poor daddy cardinal has his wings full with four babies that are learning to fly. I said something about how that poor cardinal has his hands full and my hubby said "Can you imagine having to take care of 4 toddlers that can fly???" I put out some special suet just for that bird.

Afternoon Monkeys ::HelloKitty::  Want to share a helpful hint that actually works. ::MonkeyWink:: Grand daughter went into a panic when she found a tick on her dog. I had received an email awhile back about how to remove them easily. Thought okay will give it a try. Soak a cotton ball with liquid dish soap and run the tick and area around the tick for about a minute. The tick will back out and will stick to the cotton ball. The tick backed out but didn't stick to the cotton ball. But I used tweezers to pull it out of the hair. I was amazed it really worked.  ::MonkeyHaHa::

I am so sorry, I have not been around, my brother passed away on July 30th from a work-related accident that sent us all reeling.

I am not sure how many on here care but I have to post this; Usain Bolt just made himself the greatest Olympian ever in my book, I really believe he would have done the same no matter which countries anthem was playing .Truly the spirit of the games!

I know your pain, I lost my sister back in January and I am still hurting from that loss.  I was close to her, We used to meet in the Smokies and do a lot of traveling around in that area.  Her husband gave me a picture he found of her and me at a cabin we stayed at and I almost cried when he gave it to me.

I have a Tip for when your lights go out: solar lights, inside the house :)

I just saw this tip on TV.  A woman brought her solar lights inside the house and used them all night long.  In the morning, she would put the solar lights, back outside to recharge.

She put a solar light in a vase and played cards, it was that well lit.

Her kids would walk around the house with a solar light, as you would with a flashlight.

This is just great...no need for extra batteries.

Greeneyes, who would ever have thought of the solar lights?  IMO, solar lights, look sort of tacky outside, but, inside the house, maybe, in a vase, they would look more attractive.

We have about 10 small solar lights outside.  Last time our power went out I did the same thing simply brought the lights indoors.  Between the lights, my battery radio and my cellphone we entertained ourselves for a couple hours  ::MonkeyCool::

"We’re getting inundated with complaints," said Donna Gregory of the federal Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), in a statement on the FBI's website.

Users can find themselves faced with "Reveton ransomware," as it's called, by clicking on a compromised website, the FBI said.

"Once infected, the victim’s computer immediately locks, and the monitor displays a screen stating there has been a violation of federal law," similar to the one shown here.

    The bogus message goes on to say that the user’s Internet address was identified by the FBI or the Department of Justice’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section as having been associated with child pornography sites or other illegal online activity. To unlock their machines, users are required to pay a fine using a prepaid money card service.

"Some people have actually paid the so-called fine," said Gregory.

The dog, called Amanda, rescued them one by one from the flames and moved up to the fire truck. One of the puppies suffered serious burns and is being tented to at a veterinary clinic.


There's little a mother wouldn't do to save her babies, and that includes rescuing them one-by-one from a house fire.

I will share with you my adventure this weekend.  We went to Pigeon Forge, TN., I did some shopping.  Saturday morning we go over to Cades Cove to see what damage occurred back a few weeks ago from the storms.  We stopped at the visitor center and my hubby goes over and talks to the park ranger.  He asks him about the Parsons Branch road going out of Cades Cove.  The ranger told him he would recommend that you have a 4x4 vehicle (which we do not)  before traveling that road--or at least a high-clearance vehicle.  Hubby tells me he has always wanted to travel that road so he drives in that direction----all against my objections.  We turn onto the road and there is a sign that says "Enter at your own risk.  Primitive mountain road. No services available"  So we drive on that road for 7 miles and it takes over 1 hour to get to the end of that road.  I was scared to death.  It is nothing but a gravel road.  The road was created back in the 1800's for wagons.  It was only one of two roads leading out of the cove for the settlers to travel.  It went south out of the cove and ends at the N.C./Tennessee border.  The road was very hard to drive.  Loose gravel made it very difficult.  We climbed up one part of the mountain and didn't think we were going to make it up because of the loose gravel and at the top you had to lift yourself out of your seat to see where the road went which was straight down.  We crossed lots of creeks/branches with concrete bridges over them but water rushing over the roadway.  Scary thinking you might slide off that bridge from the rushing water.   About an hour later we reached the end of the road.  I was so relieved-----Until we turned onto highway 129 and realized we were now on the road known as the "Tail of the Dragon".   This road has 318 curves in the 10 miles of the road and motorcycles come from all over the country to travel this road.  Here we are in our SUV flying down the mountain with motorcycles right behind us.  I yell at my hubby to slow down and he pulls over at each pull-off so the the motorcycles can go around us. 

We had a very interesting day and when we got back to our room I collapsed!!!  My hubby said "Now we have done everything there is to do in Tennessee--next we are going to take on North Carolina".  I don't know if my nerves can stand it.  North Carolina mountains are worse than Tennessee mountains.

That's a cute picture.  She has such pretty eyes.  Boy, where has the time gone?  My niece was born about the time she was.  I have had a blast with her.  I know you do too with her.  It is so great to be able to spoil them and then walk away.

I am watching the Beach Boys on our public tv station.  Brings back memories.  But they sure have aged a lot!  ::MonkeyHaHa:: ::MonkeyHaHa::

We've seen them on PBS too!  That and many of the other older bands.  Sure brings back memories.  ::MonkeyDance::

I saw them here at our university back in the late 80's when they opened the Corvette museum.  They were great.  We really rocked out that day.  They put on a fantastic show that day. We had corvettes driving outside the stadium and honking as they were singing.  It was a great show.  I had to get my Mom to keep my son that day.  She told me that me and my hubby were too old to be acting like teenagers!  Imagine that.  I would pay to see them again if they get anywhere near here. 

They are singing a lot of new songs tonight.  They are still great.   ::monkeywine2::  ::MonkeyWink::

This is their 50th anniversary show.  They just did a dedication to Dennis, the one that drown.  Boy he was so cute.  What a waste.

Mods, good morning and I have a question please.  Would it be possible for someone to start a thread on Gabby Swainson?  I know ther are a bazillion that deserve to be here but it is starting to get some national attn and I prefer to read here.  I've gotten very spoiled by the good Monkeys bringing over the best articles and thoughts.
