HONOLULU — Parents and guardians who fail to report missing children could face felony charges under a bill before the Hawaii Senate.

Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz has introduced a bill he calls 'Caylee's Law,' which refers to a widely-publicized missing child case in Florida.

    Dela Cruz says his bill places greater responsibility on parents and guardians by holding them accountable for reporting missing children in a timely manner.

AB 1432 was approved Sunday on the Assembly Floor 67-3 according to a news release. Caylee's Law would make it a felony in California to fail to report the death or disappearance of a child, aged 14 or younger, within 24 hours.

According to the Sacramento Bee, offenders could be jailed for a year and fined $2,000 for failing to report a youngster who is missing and in danger or one who has died as a result of a crime.

A bill which would reduce the time a parent or custodian of a child has to report a child missing has stalled in committee because Kentucky lawmakers say the legislation is too vague.  The two Kentucy State Representatives who are sponsoring the bill, known as “Caylee’s Law,” say they will make changes to satisfy the concerns.

We learned today that a Feb. 14 hearing has been scheduled to discuss trial logistics. The trial is set to begin in April.

alagary, I agree that it sounds sonoty and pretentious.  I believe it is from the Old English word, "Squire," which indicates a male of some importance.  My grandfather was mayor of a small town in VA and was referred to as "Squire."  Until quite recently it was used only by males, but now woman lawyers use it too, although by definition it means "Male."  But when one looks at the masculine appearance of some of Casey's attorneys, it might be more descriptive of them, i.e. Andrea Lyons, than maybe Megan Kelly on FOX who is an attorney and no mistaking her gender. If I were a lawyer, I'd call myself Attorney-at-Law and not Esquire.  While legally correct, I think it is silly for a woman to call herself "Esquire."

Ok, while I understand that people are tired of hearing about KC, I see this as an "Enemy Within" type of situation.

Yes, we need to protect the US from terrorists.  But just how safe will our country be if we allow our citizens to murder their loved ones when they tire of them.  Our borders will be safe, but it will be like fencing in the wolf with the sheep.  KWIM?

Yes, Kitty Mom.  I know what you mean and I agree with you.  Everybody can think of more than one thing at a time.  The suggestion that we should think of other things is sort of silly, because we already do that.   I certainly do not devote all of my attention all of the time to Casey Anthony.  Human beings are capable of being interested in numerous subjects, all at the same time.  For instance, I am concerned and/or interested  about the Republican primary, the Afghanistan war, the situation in Egypt, a book I am reading about the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, the uncontrolled Mexican border, the DOJ, Middle East terrorists, my dog, Charlie, and so many things I can't name them all.  How ridiculous to believe we can only think of one thing to the exclusion of all others. I do check out news about Casey Anthony as I check out the news about maybe 100 other things. Interest in one does not exclude interest in all of the others.  And you are certainly right about leaving her loose among the innocent population of the country.  She is a wolf among the sheep.  Another thing most of us think about is protecting children from people like Casey Anthony.

While I think that resent videos where put out there from The evil one because she really thought she would be getting off her so called parole this month and was testing the waters to see what she could get some sucker to pay her for an interview. What the dip wads don't seem to realize is that even if she waited 10 years we still would find her and her team repulsive.

Legislation known as "Caylee's Law" has been approved by the California Assembly, said Assemblymember Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga).

AB 1432, which passed by a 67-3 vote, would make it a felony for a parent to not report a child (14 years or younger) missing within 24 hours, if there is reason to believe that the child's disappearance is a result of a crime.

"I am pleased that my colleagues have joined with us in supporting reasonable policy to ensure that missing children are reported to the authorities," said Morrell, who proposed the bill along with Holly Mitchell (D-Culver City).

"Out of the horrific tragedy that struck Caylee Anthony, we have realized, unfortunately, the negligence of some parents and the need for that negligence to be corrected."

For the life of me, I don't understand how a person can admit her guilt to charges of lying to LE during her trial, and then appeal the conviction!

We should be concerned/worried about Casey living among us. She's at least a liar & a thief (convicted felon). I would add killer to her resume, even though she was found not guilty. That doesn't =innocence!
In my opinion, she murdered her daughter, Caylee, and got away with it! If she moved into my neighborhood, I would be outraged to say the least. We as a society must protect our children, families, our communities from the likes of evil criminals such as Casey!

You know, Ono, one of the things which distrubs me greatly is the denial of justice to Zenaida Gonzales.  IMO she is just as deserving, if not more so, of justice than Casey Anthony.  Yet, every court decision seems to only consider fairness to Casey Anthony and no one else.  It seems that as far as courts in Orlando go, only Casey matters.  I believe that Zenaida Gonzales has suffered at the hands of Casey Anthony and only her attorneys care.  Could it be that it is because she is Hispanic and Casey is a young white girl?  Her life is just as important as anyone else's and she has suffered great emotional distress as well as having her reputation, her livelihood, her children's safety harmed by Casey's lies.  Why don't the courts consider her at least equal to Casey Anthony?  It's a mystery to me. And I don't like it one damn bit.

No one in my home likes it a bit either Babybear. Great post! This crap burns me up! As unfair as it's been, I can't help but wonder if the judge has some kind of white preferences and thinks like others do in the sicko kc camp, that Zenaida is a woman with frivolous intentions and nothing but. They're not looking at the whole picture. 

I would really like to hear kc being told that she has to answer all questions, especially the one Morgan asked kc during the depo "isn't it a fact that you learned of Zenaida Gonzalez and who she was when she visited Sawgrass apartments and you were there?"

I don't think the judge is even trying to look at the whole picture. Zenaida was at Sawgrass...the very place kc said she dropped off Caylee at the beginning of the investigation and is hanging on to that lie to this day. It just adds to the insult Z has had to endure. The weirdos in kc's camp were probably the ones that called and threatened Z. She's been through some awful crap! You can't help but wonder if she were a white woman if it would be any different.

People hear her say she just wants to clear her name and they scratch their heads and say "well everyone knows she didn't have anything to do with this, so why sue?" People need to put themselves in Z's shoes for a just a minute. How would it make them feel if a child was missing and the mother blames someone with your name and the so called disappearance occurred where there's evidence you viewed apartments there... and all the mother has to do is look at a picture and say, no that's not her, but... she never does that. Kc put it all in her pocket to try to find some way to use Z to help her get off the hook for murdering her child. Kc never used it, it never would have worked, but I'd bet money she gave it consideration. I've no doubt kc tried to cook up some way to use Z to help her create reasonable doubt. Heck, I wouldn't put it past kc to try to lay all the guilt on Z's lap. But there's little doubt she was giving it consideration because all she had to do is say "That's not her."

Just this alone would be enough to make me livid! Throw in death threats, being let go from your job because of the attention kc created, your children worrying (even a little bit), etc... even Mr. Greene himself would have to admit it's more than enough reason to take someone to court.

If I were in Z's shoes I would do whatever I legally could do to put a hurt on that liar. Not that it would change a thing about kc but it would make me feel a little better. It's more than just clearing a name. It's retribution for a mental-case trying to pull innocent people into her sick little game and for even considering trying to use an innocent person to help her create reasonable doubt. Sure, we all know Z is innocent but that's not the point. The point is so clear... a sick murdering mother used innocent people left and right to try to keep her nasty @ss off the hotseat, and didn't care one bit if it would get anyone else in trouble. If kc had just said "that's not her", Z's life would have been different. But because kc continued to play games, Z received death threats and probably sat up many nights worrying what else would happen to her because of kc's sick mind. (You know GA had to lay awake nights worrying how kc was going to throw him under the bus before he found out she was and how.  Kissing her butt on those videos, calling her beautiful and everything... none of it helped her have a heart at all. That may be the driving force behind CA still supporting her monster daughter, out of fear of what kc will do if she doesn't. )

Whew! Sorry for the rant. This one is just so old and beyond frustrating!

It's sick isn't it! "I lied" and then, "I never lied."  But it actually works on some people and so she keeps on trying. She's done this all her life and gets a real kick out of it. She thinks she can bs her way out of it. I have a relative that does this crap and a few relatives that get confused by him just too easy. I've also seen him pull it on gullible girlfriends. When he gets caught telling a whopper he'll say things like "that's not what I meant by that..." or "no, that's not everything that happened...." and then adds more lies using pieces of things that actually did happen but skews it and most of us still scream, "BS!" but the gullibles are so confused they either just drop it or think it could be possible he's being honest. He just toys with them. When relatives pull all his lies out in the open, that even the gullible can understand it's all lies, oh how he'll cry and claim that everybody is either jealous of him or just plain hates him and never hears him out.  He'll hang onto a lie forever no matter the consequences. I can't stand him!!!

Cindy reminds me of the gullibles in my family that either totally buy the bs or they just want to believe it so bad that they will... because if the liars blow enough smoke up their @ss, they'll want to believe their lying flatterer is truthful. Kc's been blowing smoke up her butt and confusing her for years and years... and if that doesn't work, she has a tantrum or plays the victim. We saw a lot of this between the two... "remember the hair straightener Zenaida gave me Mom?" Throwing in little tangible pieces to make the lie seem like it could carry some truth to it. Her family said some of her lies have some truth in them. Sure they do. It helps to create confusion. "She could be telling the truth about that...hmmm." If they get away with this crap enough, it certainly feeds those egos to make them believe they can bs anyone. Even LE...judges, etc... And after the actions or I should say inaction of the Pinellas 12, I bet that really fed her ego..."Damn, I'm gonna gamble that I can get away with lying to the police too!" It didn't actually work, (well according the 12 they knew it was bs but they needed a video of her murdering the child to help them convict her)... but the sick little monster she is, she thinks her bs worked. She thinks she lied her way out of another one... that she's the queen of manipulation.

Oh the possibilities she's cooking up to explain how she said she lied but she really wasn't. We'll need to have plenty of barf bags in the cage when we hear the next bunch of crap out of her camp. I pray the ears in that courtroom have bs detectors and an intolerance for her sickness. I hope Judge Munyon grows a bs detector and intolerance yesterday!!!

Illinois and Missouri joined states including Florida, New York, Oklahoma and West Virginia in pushing legislation that would result in criminal charges if parents did not report missing children within a 24-hour deadline.

Illinois state Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, has filed legislation proposing that parents or legal guardians failing to report a child under the age of 13 missing within a 24-hour period will be charged with a class 4 felony, facing one to three years in prison and fines up to $25,000.

Missouri state Rep. Billy Pat Wright, R-Dexter, filed legislation early this year that would charge parents failing to report a missing child within 24 hours with a Class A misdemeanor, facing up to one year in jail and up to $1000 in fines.

"Protecting children is one of the most important things we can do as legislators," Franks said.

Franks said his office received a significant number of calls last summer during the Anthony murder trial, which moved him to file the legislation in August.

Franks said his office is fixing language of the bill to address concerns that the legislation doesn't account for, like misunderstandings, for example, "if a child went off to camp for a month" and there was some explainable reason the parent didn't know. He will be discussing the bill in committee next week.

Currently, only one state has passed a legal 24-hour deadline on parents who are reporting a missing child. New Jersey passed legislation almost identical to Franks' proposed legislation early this year.

The Illinois bill is HB3804 and the Missouri bill is HB1167.

Yes--that's a good way to describe it.

I really do not think those social dynamics you mention have anything to do with the seeming delay.  It is more of the path of the legal tactics that Casey's Defense team has embarked upon--they are sly.  It appears they are adroit chess players--however, ... sooner or later, the stalling will eventually play itself out and come to an end.  I believe Morgan & Morgan have the determination to stick with Zenaida for the long haul. 

We are all supposed to be equal under the law.  It just seems to me that Casey Anthony is more equal.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IN ORDER TO FIX THE PROBLEMS, THE SERVER CO MIGHT HAVE TO TAKE DOWN BOTH SERVERS. ONE OF THEM WILL AFFECT THE FORUM TEMPORARILY. THEY MAY NEED TO DO SO IN ORDER TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE.

Missing child legislation gains bipartisan support in Delaware

DOVER -- A bipartisan group of Delaware state legislators has sponsored a bill to ensure that when a person fails to report a missing child, he or she can be charged with endangering the welfare of that child.

Under Delaware law, the charge ranges from a misdemeanor to a Class E felony, punishable by up to five years in prison, depending on whether the child is harmed or dies as a result of the neglect.

"Both sides of the aisle have worked together on this issue," said House Majority Leader Rep. Peter Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth Beach. "Protecting our children from harm is not a political issue, it's a parental issue."

The monthly report was released Monday with Casey indicating she has not found a job, nor has she consumed alcohol or drugs in the month of January.

Casey attended some sort of program, but it’s unclear what kind it was. The report lists educational, vocational, mental health, drug, alcohol or self-improvement class as the types of programs.

Casey filled out the report by hand, indicating she paid $153.76 as part of her monthly probation fee.

Attorneys for EquuSearch founder Tim Miller have asked the court to appoint a special master for his deposition.

Miller is suing Casey Anthony for searches his group coordinated back in 2008 for Caylee Anthony. His team says he only acted in his corporate capacity in relation to the issues raised in his complaint.

But Judge Lisa Munyon has ordered that Anthony's defense team can depose Miller in his individual capacity in the county where he lives in Texas.

She also ruled that the deposition may last no more than seven hours and that a special master — essentially an impartial person who would oversee the process — would be appointed if the parties could not agree to the deposition's scope.

Each side will have to pay 50 percent of the special master's costs.

While Miller may be deposed and questioned as an individual, Casey Anthony so far has managed to largely avoid most questions at deposition while she challenges her criminal convictions for lying to law enforcement. That appeal protects her from saying anything self incriminating.

“If the Very Honorable Judge Belvin Perry had exercised his judicial discretion to do so, Ms. Anthony would likely be spending at least 9 more months in the Orange County Jail after taking into account good time and gain time.”

She was given 412 days time served plus 1 year probation for the check charges. So technically in Jan 2010 when she was sentenced for the check fraud, she had already served the time for the thefts. All she would have had to do was the 1 year probation. However, she was given 4 years for the 4 counts of lying to LE in the murder trial. When the time was assessed for her release, she was given credit for the 412 days previously credited for the check fraud charges again on the lying charges. That should not have been credited to her twice, considering they were two separate individual cases. She should still have had another 412 days to serve on the lying charges. And Perry had to have known that and decided to give her another pass.

I never bought into the theory that the videos were pirated and not put there without either her consent or participation,” said attorney Bill Sheaffer, a legal analyst for WFTV-Channel 9. “The continued release verifies our suspicion that she’s been a part of this the whole time.”

Nothing in the videos touches on the issues in the civil lawsuits against Anthony brought by Zenaida Gonzalez and Texas EquuSearch, Sheaffer added. In the newest footage, Anthony talks about herself, and a dog can be heard barking.

“As long as she’s talking about present-day activities in her life, what she’s saying has nothing to do with the civil suits and it’s going to be a hard argument for the plaintiff to make that she’s waived her Fifth Amendment privileges,” he said.

The Gonzalez trial could put Anthony back in the headlines in a big way later this year.
A pre-trial hearing has been set for March 26, but no trial date has been scheduled.

“The plaintiff’s lawyers have indicated they are moving heaven and earth that this case gets tried as scheduled,” Sheaffer said. He described Judge Lisa Munyon as no-nonsense and predicted there’s a 70 percent to 80 percent chance that the trial will start as early as April if the defense doesn’t get it continued.

“But I was wrong about the verdict in the criminal case,” Sheaffer said.

Kc reports monthly to her probabtion officer and claims she is unemployed and has no income, yet she has a new laptop, 2 new hairdos since being released from jail this summer, piercings, a dog, etc. How, or should I say who is paying for all this crap, since we know KC has never earned an honest dime in her life, Surely her probation officer has the ability and clearance to investigate. If not I wouldn't put it past Morgan's law firm to find this ho's stash of funds...I wish she'd just fall off the face of the earth.

Yes I'm sure it's a crime everywhere. The thing is, that driving without a license, and other breaches we well know she's committed (ie; her "alcohol consumption"- I could NOT FIND actual Documentation- that she was "in excess" - nor past the "extent of to where your normal faculties are impaired")  The breaches/conditions- HAVE TO BE WELL DOCUMENTED- and they're not that I can find. It comes down to "he said-she said"- which doesn't make a good argument - a moot point ! ( I had to chuckle- "normal" ??? ) I wish the lady that was on the news saying she saw her at an intersection driving had taken a picture! Apparently, Perry and other long-serving chief judges around the state did not know this ruling was coming down when it did late last week.

Perry, who recently announced plans to run again for his judicial seat in November, has served as the chief judge for Orange and Osceola between 1995 and 1999 and then 2001 to the present. His current term as chief judge ends June 30, 2013.

His departure as chief judge means that the circuit's 65 judges, including Perry, will have to elect a new chief judge about a year from now in either January or February 2013.

The Supreme Court ruling had several dissenting opinions. However, the majority opinion states that because the amendments, including the chief judge term limits, were not published for comment before they were adopted, "interested persons" will have 60 days from Feb. 9 to file comments with the court.

In dissenting with the majority opinion in part, Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles T. Canady wrote, "Although term limits for chief judges might be the right policy, this Court should not adopt such a policy without first receiving input from the trial courts and the district courts."

Gelman said that Corey assured Thompson that the case was still strong and that they expected the confession to stand up to any suppression attempts. When questioned after Harrell pleaded guilty, Corey said there were no issues with how the confession was taken.

Before agreeing to support the plea deal, Thompson said she thought of the confession concern and what she considers the injustice of Casey Anthony’s acquittal. She said she didn’t want to take any chances of that happening.

“What if I got a jury of people who believed that he wasn’t guilty?” she said. “I wasn’t willing to take a not guilty instead of taking a deal and letting him go to jail forever.”

Gelman added that although the state felt the confession would hold up, “There’s always a risk there. Without that confession, Diena could not stomach the possibility of him walking out of prison.”

The Commission plans to conduct applicant interviews and send a list of three to six names to the governor in early March, said Patrick T. Christiansen, chair of the nominating panel.

Good morning, Monkeys.

IMO, because Perry lied to the FBI about his affair with a court employee, and even having the affair, he is morally unfit to even be a judge, much less a chief judge.  Also, IMO his much vaunted knowledge of the law is easy to have if one has a laptop on the bench and an app to look up the law with the click of the mouse. Some of the rulings he made in the Anthony case were disgraceful.  As an example, he didn't allow the prosecution to have the jury take a whiff of the cans with a piece of the auto trunk carpet in them because he didn't "Want the jury to become witnesses."  Yet, he did allow the jury to smell the old Velveeta wrapper, in effect becoming witnesses for the defense.  His leniency with Baez was astonishing and his threats were empty.  He took no action after the trial as he had said he would do.  He is a big fake.  I hope his term is even shortened and the good people of his circuit fail to reelect him. I wouldn't vote for him for dog catcher.  It would be unfair to the dogs.

Representative Tony Shipley is pushing a bill that to make it a felony for a parent, legal guardian, or caretaker who does not notify law enforcement about the disappearance of a child within 24 hours. Right now in Tennessee there are no laws on the books that penalize a parent for not reporting a missing child.

"Parents need to be responsible for their children. If a child goes missing, they need to report that, to authorities quick enough. Studies show that if a child goes missing for 24 hours, the likelihood of them being found is practically zero," said Shipley.

Covering and investigating cases on a National level, I had to make the obvious time- management choice in my work.

Caylee Marie Anthony was my flagship case, and that sweet baby will continue to shape my thoughts and direction like a compass.

I was dumbfounded by the verdict in that case, second only to Mr. Ashton's flagrant arrogance since.

I cannot tell you how it pains me to say that. 

Congratulations to Mr. Ashton on his "Stepford" Attorney status.

Blink, you are right.  I also found it to be condescending when Ashton said that everything he does is above reproach.  Like Caesar's wife, I guess.  IMO he went from a fairly decent Asst. DA to a man much impressed with himself.  As to why you know you are watching a socio/science experiment, you likely are.  I think he has blown any chance he had of winning an election.  Most people don't like such arrogance in a public servant.  I certainly don't.

I ordered Ashton's book before it was published as did many others.  When it arrived, I had already seen some of his interviews.  Somehow, I no longer wanted to read his book, although I read many books during the course of a year.  It still sits on my coffee table, unread.  I can't exactly explain it, even to myself.

As Kittymom said, Jeff can no longer criticize the Anthonys' defense of Casey because he is doing the exact same thing with his son, although not on so large a scale.

No, he doesn't.  I wonder how many times he prosecuted cases that involved someone under the influence of alcohol?  He son might just as easily have wrecked his auto as been stopped by LE.  Would he still be defending a 21 yr old man if he had killed someone that night?  No, Alexander Ashton did not murder his daughter.  But he could just have easily killed someone else's child while drinking and driving.  For Jeff, as a former officer of the law and seeking public office to want to excuse away his son's accountability is not any different than Cindy Anthony trying to excuse away her daughter's actions.  The question of where Cindy should have drawn the line with KC was asked many times over the past few years.  Now the question for Jeff Ashton to ask himself is where is he willing to draw that same line within his own family. 

Jmo, my gut says Jeff knows he's not going to win this case.

Agreed cookie, but my great disappointment and disagreement with Jeff does not lie with the fact it's his family member, but in the fact that he's defending an obviously drunk driver, son or not. I expected his respect for the law would prevail. He should have told his son, you did it, you pay the price, tough love type thing. I'm so disappointed and keep trying to find an excuse for Jeff to make such a stupid decision in defending this action, which will no doubt affect his own future ambitions. It would be different if his son was not so obviously guilty.

Further to above, has Mr. Ashton's belief in our judicial system been so desecrated after losing Caylee's case that he believes "imperfect justice" will be beneficial and prevail again to his side in his son's case? And if so, does he really deserve the most prestigious position he is campaigning for?
  If the answer to the first question is yes, then the answer to the second question must be no. I love what Jeff tried to do for Caylee, but unfortunately I think this latest decision has sealed his future endeavors. I'm afraid the evil of CA is far reaching and still affecting us all.

As a mother who's son was mowed down by a drunk driver last fall and is watching his slow recovery of a broken back as well as other injuries I feel it is disgusting.

Northern Rose, I had no idea, my thoughts and prayers for a full recovery for your son.  I remember you being missing in action for a while, but I never knew why.

My Blink Jr.'s middle name is that of a family member who was killed by a drunk driver at age 19.

I always felt that Cindy Anthony should have told Casey that she had to admit what she had done and pay the consequences for her actions.  And that Cindy would support her in that.  I can never be sure, but I think that's what I would have done in similar circumstances. 

Alexander Aston could have wiped out an entire family that night.  He obviously was impaired in that video.  He was lucky he didn't  but it could so easily have gone the other way.  Many of us said that the Anthony jury wouldn't have convicted her if they had a video of the crime.  Well, the jury will have this video and it is foolish to think they will not understand what they are seeing.

If Jeff Ashton were asking for advice, which obviously he isn't since he has become overly impressed with himself, IMO the best advice would be that he should tell his son to face up to what he had done and suffer the consequences.  And that he would support Alexander in that.

If Jeff Ashton did that, he might be preventing the death of his son and/or innocent people in the future.  Alexander needs that lesson, harsh though it seems. It would not indicate a lack of love for Alexander, but quite the reverse, preventing a horrible experience in the future.  Perhaps saving Alexander's life.

I have never been to Jeff Ashton's Facebook page and don't intend to so I don't have to "server" anything.  After seeing several of his interviews, I no longer am his fan. And this just confirms that it was a good choice.

Northern Rose, I remember when your son was hit by a drunk driver and it was touch and go for a while and then the question of whether he would be able to walk. I never say much of a personal nature, but I was praying for him.  Thank God he is coming along, but whoever hit him could just as well have been Alexander Ashton.  This lesson hits very close to home for you.

Reporting a child's disappearance in a timely manner is the goal of what authors are calling "Caylee's Law".

The measure introduced in the House Wednesday would require parents and legal guardians to report a child missing within 18 hours. In cases of accidental death, the reporting window would be 12 hours.

Republican Representative BJ Pak of Lilburn introduced the measure after what he calls an outcry from constituents last year when a jury found Casey Anthony “not-guilty" in her daughter’s death.

“If they refuse to cooperate in locating the child or the body if they fail to report within 18 hours the whereabouts of the child the prosecutors would have an additional tool if the evidence is insufficient to charge them with murder to hold them accountable under this statute,” said Pak.

14 other states including Alabama and Tennessee have introduced similar legislation. Violators could face up to ten years in prison.

Kind of like Jose Baez.  He used the media for his own purposes but that was then, this is now.

Unflappable Judge O.H. Eaton Jr., who provided analysis during the Casey Anthony trial for WESH-Channel 2, was back in the news in a big way today.

What he did today reflected what he had been saying during the Anthony trial.

Judge Eaton granted an acquittal in the murder trial of teacher Delores Laster. She had been accused of fatally shooting her husband, Clarence, in 1988.

“You charge somebody with first-degree murder, you’ve got to prove it,” Eaton said.

It was a comment to make viewers think back to what Eaton said during the Anthony coverage. In July, during the trial, Eaton reiterated a defense point that the state didn’t answer how Caylee died, when she died, where she died or who was with her. “[Prosecutor] Jeff Ashton didn’t answer those questions,” Eaton said then. There was no hard evidence of the defense theory that the toddler was chloroformed and suffocated, Eaton added. Anthony was later acquitted of Caylee’s murder.

I have not said much on the Ashton defense case because I have mixed feelings. I understand that as a parent he wants to protect his son. I understand that his son was obviously intoxicated at the time of the stop. I also know that our justice system allows a defense for anyone. I think his son deserves an attorney even if his is guilty. The part the defense plays is that of making sure that the punishment is fair and equitable. I have not heard any reports that Jeff is going to try to get him out of the penalty. I do not think Jeff should be representing his son.

I pray that regardless of what Jeff A. does in court, that his son does get a chance to go through treatment. I am one of those providers who have treated hundreds of the DUII people. The purposed is to save lives by providing education and assessing for more severe problems (like all our famous people who are dying, hello...) So many people (who may have started out grumpy) are so grateful when they finish. There are WAY too many repeat DUIIs and people need to wake up and they can, but enabling them and preventing them from learning is very cruel. Addiction is a deadly disease and around 17,000 people are killed every year in USA because of impaired driving, way more than 9-11. (drunk is not really the correct term these days) And how many are injured? A LOT more.
If you are over the limit, you are guilty. Period, no ifs ands or buts. So many people waste so much money on lawyers, which they later refret. They can do little, except sometimes negotiate better deals for the license and provide support. However, it is a good living for them. And the fines (low in FL!) and jail time, etc. make an impression, and they need to to combat the alcohol/addiction culture which ravages USA.

btw, since many people don't know, you can be convicted for any blood alcohol content if you have made driving mistakes AND at least in my State now (and it will go nationwide soon) there are MANY DUIIs for other drugs and combos of drugs, most notably prescription drugs.
Don't drink and drive means really "NO ALCOHOL" and be REAL careful about those prescription meds and combining, but everyone doesn't want to think it is them. Unfortunately due to the alcohol lobby, MADD cannot do all out public education.

while i dont necessarily agree with jeff being the attorney for his own son, i still believe that he fought the good fight for caylee & truly wanted nothing more in that circus of a trial than justice for a murdered baby who was thrown away like garbage by her entire family.  I still respect him immensely for trying so hard for caylee. There is a difference between covering for, enabling or straight out lying for your child & wanting to help them while they learn from a mistake. I havent watched him discuss his sons case but i will reserve judgement until i know he is condoning his behavior. I am a grown christian woman but i have made mistakes in my past that i am truly sorry for including being a stupid kid that drank at a party & drove myself home. Hindsight is 20/20 & immaturity can sometimes make you do stupid things. If he had caused harm to someone else he would have lived the rest of his life with that. Lets be thankful that that didnt happen, hope he receives a proper punishment & learns from his mistake. Jmo, but i cant turn on a man who we all just 6 months ago thought was caylees hero.

Lawyer-speak.  Such a shame.  I really thought that Jeff Ashton was a different kind of lawyer.  The way he brushed off losing the case, the new job with a defense firm, and now this, tell me that I was wrong to think so highly of him.  If he truly cared about his son, he wouldn't be trying to get him less of a punishment but would be more focused on teaching him to be a man of integrity.  One dui arrest is not going to result in Alexander Ashton being sentenced to years in prison.  Unless this isn't AA's first dui????

No bashing here.  You are as entitled to your opinion as I.  Although, I haven't mentioned anything about his writing a book.  I've certainly NEVER said he was lining his pockets.  He can write whatever he wants.  I could care less about that.  What bothers me is that he has been an advocate for victims (he started out prosecuting DUI cases).  He knows what happens when people drink and drive.  As for AA being 'sorry', if he were truly repentant, he would face the charges like a man and take the appropriate punishment.  Trying to get out of the two month jail sentence tells me he is more sorry he was caught than the drinking and driving.  And you are correct, I don't know that he makes a habit of drinking and driving or if this were his first time doing such.  It really doesn't matter.  He broke the law and deserves the same punishment as any other person.  Deputies don't give warnings for DUI's for a reason.  Ask someone who has lost a family member to a drunk driver how they feel about this.  It only takes one time driving drunk to end someone's life. 

And, JA's denial of being embarrassed by his son's actions and his attitude that LE hasn't proved his son guilty strike me as very much the attitude that Cindy Anthony has had about KC. 

That is my opinion.

cindy anthony lied about an obvious murder & showed no love, respect or loyalty to caylee. I have been close to those who have lost loved ones to drunk drivers & i am in NO way excusing. I just think people are being a little hard on jeff. I still respect the way he fought for caylee. Not trying to be argumentative.

I would do the same for my kid.... I hope the kid learned his lesson! If in the future there is a second DUI i believe that jeff will not help him...

The civil defamation case against Casey Anthony appears to be headed toward trial in April.

Attorneys for Anthony and Zenaida Gonzalez, the woman suing her for defamation, met with Circuit Judge Lisa T. Munyon this morning and signaled the go-ahead for jury selection in April -- followed by six days of witness testimony.

The civil case would begin less than a year after Anthony's murder trial ended with her acquittal on the most serious criminal counts in July. It surrounds the question of whether Gonzalez was defamed because her name was similar to the individual Anthony identified in 2008 as abducting her daughter.

This morning's hearing was meant to discuss trial logistics in the civil trial.

Munyon said if either side wants a continuance for the trial, they must file and have a hearing before the end of the month. But both sides indicated they're prepared for trial about two months from now.

"We're ready to go," Gonzalez attorney Keith Mitnik told Munyon.

Mitnik also said he wants to subpoena Anthony for the trial and needs her address to do that.

Anthony's attorney Charles Greene said he needs time to respond to the request. Anthony is not now required to appear at the civil trial as she was during her criminal trial.

Although Anthony is not expected to testify about much at the trial because she is appealing her criminal convictions for lying to law enforcement and has invoked her right against self-incrimination, Mitnik said he still wants her in court.

"I don't want just an empty chair there," he said. "I want a human being there that did this to another human being."

As for calling her to the stand and questioning her, he said, "Whether she answers or not is up to her, but I'm planning to put her on the stand if permitted."

Asked if this might be viewed as beating up on Anthony, Mitnik said, "My intent is to seek justice, not to beat up on her. I'm so tired of hearing about poor, poor Casey Anthony."

While the civil trial seems ready to go in April, several other major issues could change things between now and then. The Gonzalez team yesterday filed a motion asking Munyon for partial summary judgment.

Meanwhile, Greene today said he also expects to file a request for summary judgment on his client's behalf.

After today's hearing, Greene said, "Casey has never accused Zenaida Gonzalez of anything. The person identified by Casey Anthony in her statements was Zenaida Fernandez, not Zenaida Gonzalez."

"You will find that neither the police nor anyone else ever believed that this plaintiff is the person that was identified by Casey Anthony," Greene continued. "The police charged her [Anthony] the same day with making a false statement about a fictitious nanny. No one has ever called the plaintiff the nanny, except for the plaintiff."

Gonzalez is suing Anthony, 25, for defamation, claiming her life was ruined after Anthony linked her to Caylee Anthony's disappearance in 2008.

The exact start date of the trial is uncertain, but Munyon said she hopes to begin around the week of April 9. She said she plans to start jury selection on a Tuesday or Wednesday, possibly the prior week, with the six-day trial beginning on a Monday.

While I appreciate all JA did in the quest for justice for Caylee ... I believe his son should face the consequences for his actions. If he is guilty, he should admit it and accept the consequences. Just like Casey should have faced the consequences all those times over the years leading up to her murdering Caylee. Maybe, just maybe, it would have saved a life if Casey would have been held accountable long ago.

Whether or not one is personally offended by Jeff's recent actions , imo, this was a gross error on his part.

His son was a first offender, and this should have pled down ( again, not making a judgement on that issue, just saying as a practical legal matter).  The breathalizer was faulty for some reason and all they had was the video- in front of a jury the only real decision on their part then became whether he APPEARED impaired or not, and he clearly was.

Instead,  he likely angered a jury by attacking the arresting officer,  ( moments of intensity, lol, we have all seen them) by accusing him of having more DUI arrests than any other officer in Seminole county?  The deputy works the graveyard weekend shift- of course he does, and Jeff knows that better than anyone.

I am dumbfounded at the ego displayed here.  He is running for district attorney, accuses Lamar's office of poor prosecutions and poor decisions in determining prosecutable cases and defends his own son in an unnecessary jury trial for a first time DUI.

I understand helping your child, I do.  I would as well, by first attempting to see what plea options were available, and then if necessary hiring an appropriate criminal attorney they would pay for themselves.  Jeff had a great deal of favor since the Anthony trial, I truly believe he would have gotten more consideration for his son's plight than anyone.


So the aftermath of the Cword continues.  Ashton has absolutely ruined any bid for office and his kid got the book thrown at him for a first time DUI with a suppressed breathalizer result that was double the legal limit both readings.

Everyone may have differing opinions about Mr. Ashton defending his son.  To criticize his doing so is not unfair, IMO.  It is difficult for me to understand  anyone seeing the video of Alexander Ashton attempting to walk a straight line and believing he might be sober.  But we all have different perceptions.  Mr. Ashton has never been my hero nor have I said he is.  On the day of the not guilty verdict, I sent flowers to Linda with a note that I believed she did a good job.  I did not send any message to Jeff Ashton.  I did pre-order his book and I believe he had every right to write it and I hope it was successful. I have yet to read it and I doubt I will.  In fact, it is headed for the trash.

I was somewhat neutral about Mr. Ashton until his publicity tour, a tour which all authors take to talk about their books. Nothing wrong with that, but I saw a man increasing impressed with himself.  Others might have seen something different.  But the deciding factor for me was when he was accused of having revealed psychological information about Casey Anthony which was under seal.  It was explained, at least to my satisfaction and apparently the judge was satisfied; At least nothing further came of it to my knowledge.  But when Ashton said, "It was above reproach, as is everything I do," or something to that effect.  No one, not even Jeff Ashton, is always above reproach, no matter what his opinion of himself might be. 

I don't recall who posted that Alexander Ashton, had he killed someone by his drunk driving, would live with it the rest of his life.  I don't have time to find it now, but will if anyone objects to my referencing it without atttribution.  IMO, If Alexander Ashton had killed someone, and from what I saw of his condition in the video he might well have done so, and if he would live with the knowledge of it, consider that the victim would not be living at all.  That, to me is the most serious consequence, not Alexander Ashton's regrets.  And the victim's family would certainly have to live the rest of their lives with the knowledge that a drunk driver killed their loved one. Needlessly.  Carelessly.  Thoughtlessly.  IMO, the others travelling on that road the night Alexander Ashton was stopped and arrested for dui were lucky indeed.

And, IMO, with that single needless, careless and thoughtless act, Alexander Ashton destroyed his father's hopes for election.  And Jeff Ashton, by defending Alexander Ashton's actions, revealed something more about his character which I don't consider becoming.  Perhaps others do. 

After all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Just jumping in to say that when my underage brother plowed down someone's fence drunk driving (first offense), my parents read him the riot act.  Then, they told him they loved him  and they'd be in court with him. When he was mouthy to the judge and got additional jail time, they told him they loved him, he was wrong, and they'd visit him in jail.  When he got out of jail, he was taken to buy the supplies (with his own money) to rebuild the fence.  After an apology was issued, he spent his "free time" rebuilding the man's fence. Tough love at work. He's never had another DUI in the past 27 years.

I agree with BabyBear- In choosing to attack the officer, rather than have his son admit to his crime, Jeff did indeed reveal a character flaw. It's a little like my teenage brother-in-law blaming the Trooper for his speeding ticket. Because the Trooper was parked in the median and not readily visible, that was supposed to somehow negate the fact that he was going 84 in a 65 mile zone.  It was "entrapment" because my BIL couldn't see him in time to drop back to 65. My father-in-law vigorously defended him with reports detailing the inaccuracies of radar guns. The underlying messages: my child can do no wrong; the rules don't apply to my child; and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get my child off...enabling...the same thing Cindy Anthony did. My BIL lost, by the way, and still thinks the rules shouldn't apply to him and bends/breaks them to suit him. The Bible calls it spoiling the child (i.e. to make the child unfit for service, useless) and it's true. Drunk driving is a choice-one that can permanently affect someone else's life.  We're not talking about a child stealing a candy bar. Jeff should have counseled his son to be a man and admit it or he should have retained another lawyer who would have done so. Instead, he played smoke and mirrors, trying to get his son off.  Where is the honor in that?

Personally speaking, if a man's house isn't in order, I don't want him leading my government or me. If he's trained his children up right, they may mistakes, but they're usually not biggies and they'll own them. He who has nothing to hide, hides nothing.  Yes, I look at the local sheriff's son to see how well he obeys the law before I vote for that sheriff.  I research before I vote because when evil men rule, the people groan. The people will be the ones paying for the lack of wisdom and integrity.

I am disheartened & sickened that that little angel got no justice & is now nothing more than a big fat paycheck in the wallet of all of the anthonys. God will have the final say on it though. I just have to remember that. I honestly dont care how jeff ashton raises his children, what office he runs for or how full of himself he has gotten. I respect the fight he fought for caylee & always will. I truly believed he, linda & frank fell in love with her & wanted to punish those responsible for discarding her like trash, both literally & figuratively. ITA! I've stepped on a few toes here accidentally and had my toes stepped on too, but it happens sometimes. One of my best of bestest friends that I dearly love, we have spats off and on, and have to agree to disagree sometimes, but I respect her and she respects me. It happens everywhere. And with the internet...it's hard to hear how someone means something on posts, there's no inflection, etc... So it's easy to misunderstand someone sometimes and come across the wrong way. My husband and I have learned so much from visits here that we consider very valuable.

Everyone please stay put here. It's a great forum. Maybe it's not perfect, (what is?), but Scared Monkeys is as close to it as you can get. I've visited them all and this place is great. Lots of wonderful posters and our mods are awesome!

I agree with all of you.  Teaching a child to take responsibility for their actions is a must, IMO, and when that is not done, the results can be horrific.

We don’t hear a lot about Jose Baez these days, especially since Cheney Mason said that Baez is no longer involved in the Casey Anthony case.

But we could soon hear from Baez.

He is scheduled to address the American Academy of Forensic Sciences’ annual meeting in Atlanta, which starts today.

Baez was listed as a speaker at three sessions. A breakfast session on Friday is called “Fantasy of Forensics: How Junk Science Failed to Persuade the Jury in the Casey Anthony Case.” A session on Tuesday is titled “Flawed Forensics: Recognizing and Challenging Misleading Forensic Evidence and Disingenuous Expert Testimony.”

KittyMom--Sometimes people we admire disappoint us.  Sometimes parents mistake enabling for love.  IMO Loving one's children means teaching them to live as moral, truthful human beings and to face the consequences for misdeeds, not assisting them in trying to get away with it. 

I was away for the weekend and didn't read  about Mr. Ashton's daughter's arrest until today.  I see that this young woman has pled "Not Guilty" and that her father is her attorney and was present for the arraignment.  Driving without a license is relatively cut and dried.  It either is or isn't.  If you have one, produce it.  If you don't, then say so.  It isn't a matter of opinion.
I was stopped for speeding once and I just told the officer that yes, I was speeding.  I didn't realize the speed limit was lower in that area and I was exceeding it. It was on a Sunday morning and there was road construction in the area although no work at that time.  I produced my license, my registration and my insurance card.  He went back to his car and checked to see if I were wanted anywhere. He came back to me, told me to hold it down on the way home, returned the documents and told me I was free to go.  My experience in life has been that things go much better if, when you make a mistake, you admit it and move on.  It's very simple.  Of course if daddy has taught you he will get you out of trouble no matter the circumstances, it becomes much less simple.

Since Mr. Ashton is running against with Mr. Lamar and these two incidents are sure to be brought up during the campaign, I wonder if Ashton's children have no respect for their father at all.  Respect. That's another thing which children must be taught.
 

Several years ago, I was distracted and rear-ended another driver.  My first words to the responding officer were, "I hit her. I was distracted...". When I went to court, I walked to the front of the packed courtroom when my name was called. The judge asked me how I was pleading. Knowing I will stand before God one day, I made myself look him in the eye and said loudly and clearly, "Guilty, your Honor."-because it was the truth.  It felt good saying it too.  I had no problem paying the fine because I had caused the accident.

Last year, we somehow missed getting our vehicle inspected.  We were pulled over after passing through a busy intersection. We knew we were not speeding. We got our registration and license out and as we waited for the officer to approach, we saw the inspection sticker. When he got to the car, we gave him the documents and told him that we had failed to get the vehicle inspected. Apparently expecting an argument, he was speechless for a few seconds.  ::MonkeyEek:: He wrote our ticket, advised us to get the vehicle inspected immediately, and informed us that if we did, the judge would likely drop the charges. We got it inspected the next day (a Monday).  When we went to court, we took our family (a good learning experience-court in action). Again, it was a packed house in Traffic Court. When my spouse's name was called, admitting guilt was not even an issue-we had failed to get our vehicle inspected. Hearing the officer's report and seeing our inspection slip, the Judge dismissed the charges. To blame the officer would have been a lie.

I expect no less honesty from those in authority, attorneys, and otherwise. As we say in our family, "It's black or white, dark or light, salt or pepper.".  When you start mixing the salt and pepper, it's nearly impossible to separate the two.  It's the same way with the truth and lies/deception. You're either telling the whole truth or you're not. "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." Proverbs 22:1  Integrity counts. Once it's gone, you can rarely get it back.

Back to Caylee... we still have our handmade Justice For Caylee sign on our vehicle window...it's not going anywhere anytime soon.  Today, we wondered if children can fly in Heaven. Wouldn't that be fun? While we don't believe it was God's best that Caylee was murdered, we are grateful that she is no longer subject to Casey's whims/temper tantrums/narcissism/neglect/rage or Cindy's sick power plays.  We also believe each of the Anthonys have been exposed for what they really are.

Just last week, I was talking to some parents at a children's event.  We were discussing the overall decline of common sense and logic in society. I was surprised when they began talking about Casey and Caylee. I was glad to discover two more in Caylee's corner.  It was interesting to me that a little girl we had never met could unite so many people nationwide; how many lives Caylee Anthony had affected.

you know I keep checking in her to see if the murderer is back in jail -  ::MonkeyMad::  I have a birthday coming up and my hubby asked me what I wanted.  One thing - that wretched person to go back to jail where she belongs!!!

The lives of Whitney Houston and Casey Anthony have one thing in common only- opportunities to shine the light of awareness.

The recent death of Whitney Houston has brought out the very best and of course the very worst in media and humanity. Let’s get the worst out of the way first. Whitney Houston, even with all of her issues and demons, was not a woman of ill character. So, those in media who are USING Ms. Houston’s name solely to get press are way off the mark. She certainly should not even be thought of in the same sentence as the likes of a Casey Anthony. It is clear that many media mavens miss the ratings bonanza that Casey Anthony brought them.

But, we can use both stories as teachable moments and to shine the light on serious issues. As you all know, I am primarily known as a true crime insider and commentator on all things criminal justice, prison and most importantly re-entry into society. My goal with the Casey Anthony case is to highlight how our court system works and what needs to change. Further, I think the Casey Anthony case must be used to shine the light on America’s dirty little secret, child abuse and neglect. The fact is that FIVE children die every day in this country from abuse or neglect. So, while I empathize with Caylee Anthony I try to keep the conversation going by talking about all of the other abused children we must take care of.

I'm glad to see you are still posting. It is a great group and like Alagary says, sometimes we strongly disagree... but it's rare. Religion, politics, child rearing, etc.... those are some touchy subjects anyway...and they do come up time to time. I myself try to stay away from those but only because I'm too old and worn out for debates. Someone else always says what I'm thinking anyway.

That by Jeff defending him and challenging the machine that records the levels, he has become his son's enabler. The bigger issue is : Anyone who drives drunk has a substance abuse issue and until the subtance abuse issue is addressed, they should not be able to drive. Jeff should be concerned about the drinking.

Years ago, my ex SIL ( 19 at the time ) was caught speeding for the third time or whatever.They were going to take his drivers away. I got him a a lawyer ( friend ) and paid for it, not to challenge anything, but to throw himself at the mercy of the judge so he could have a restricted day time license so he could still work and get to school.  He got it. He could drive between the hours of 8am to 8pm. They weren't yet married and he had to be at home by 8 and he was, because he was being monitored at the other end by his Mumma. He did learn his lesson and never ever got another black mark on his drivers again. His year of being " restricted" was tough on him , but he did it. I think he still liked to be a speed demon / dare devil kind of kid , but it was on his racing bike and go karts. My daughter did not have her own car at the time. so this really was an ordeal for them. Everone lived. He is my ex SIL, but I think the right thing was done by the courts and I never regretted getting him the lawyer. 

This may not come out quite right, but, imo.......the dirty little secret in our country is that our Nation is ALLOWING child abuse, neglect and murder to grow each and every day.  Too many folks that are in the positions to make changes, don't fight hard enough for these helpless, innocent victims. Our cries and those of the abused, fall on deaf ears, for the most part. If children were dollar bills, the fight to save them would be immense and the offenders would be in jail. What happened to the value of human life in our country? Why don't enough people care about that???

Kat-Gram--IMO You did exactly the right thing in hiring an attorney for the young man and with the understanding that he would admit to his speeding.  I am just astonished that many people don't seem to think teaching one's children to face the consequences of their actions is important and evading that responsibility is acceptable. Being an upstanding person with honor is more important to me than any material possession and certainly more important than attaining a political office.  I must have been born in the wrong century or something.  But still, my friends seem to feel the same as I do.  Maybe that's why they are my friends.

I tend to agree --- especially the Alabamaians in June --- prolly want to inspect this speciman. LOL     ::MonkeyHaHa::

On the Clerk of Courts website, Baez's name, still listed in the "Lead Attorneys" category, has been crossed out. No one else was listed on the site as of Tuesday afternoon.

However, that is not going to happen.  So I have concentrated on getting Caylee's Law passed in my state and hopefully every state. Perhaps her death will not have been in vain if other children are protected because Caylee wasn't.  I just keep believing that all those who worked so hard to allow kc to walk away from that courtroom will eventually pay the price for their evil deeds.

Hey, Monkeys...just got back from Lafayette,Louisiana and boy, do they know how to do Mardi Gras up right!  (I'll change to St. Pat's soon, but I love what Brandi did with my monkey.  I couldn't get into the forum for awhile and then I was gone...)  So Baez finally exited, stage left, like Snaggle Puss...I think Casey and his, ahem, relationship, was a match made in hell...Their psychopathies complemented each other.  I was, (and still am,)
so horrified about her being acquitted, but maybe there is a bigger and better justice in store for both of them...Karma has no deadline...I'm just impatient.

Bill Inspired By Caylee Anthony Headed To The House Floor

[Tallahassee, FL] A measure inspired by the death of Caylee Anthony was approved unanimously Wednesday by the Florida House Judiciary Committee.

As reported by Sunshine Slate back in July of 2011, the bill previously known as “Caylee’s Law” was originally proposed by State Rep. Bill Hager (R-87/Boca Raton) in the media. It has undergone changes since then, including its name. Hager is now a co-sponsor of the bill.

“What we witnessed in the case of two year old Caylee Anthony was truly tragic,” Hager said in a press release at the time. “Placing a law on the books requiring parents and guardians to report missing children who are in significant danger in a timely manner will ensure that parents are held accountable for their actions.”

“It will also assure that we put justice on the side of those among us who are most vulnerable,” he said.

The bill in its current form (HB 37) would make it a third-degree felony for parents or guardians to lie to law enforcement officials when a child under 16 is missing, dies or is seriously injured.

A legislative committee in Pennsylvania has approved two bills drafted in response to the 2008 homicide of two-year-old Caylee Anthony in Florida.

House bills 1841 and 1842, together known as "Caylee's Law," were sent to the state House of Representatives by a unanimous vote Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee.

House Bill 1841 would increase penalties for those who make false reports to police investigating crimes involving a child, while House Bill 1842 would strengthen penalties for concealing the death of a child.

Both crimes would be upgraded to third-degree felonies with maximum penalties of seven years in prison.

I feel a bit sorry for georgie too. Only a bit. I don't think he deserved what kc did to him. And he was the only parent trying to make kc at least a little accountable, ie finding her fake job out and telling Cindy about it. In fact, why not try to sue kc for wrongful death and also defamation?! You'd have the whole world behind you in that pursuit! Well, not your wife... but that's her problem! The Florida Bar says that former Casey Anthony lead attorney Jose Baez has been cleared of all complaints filed against him in the case.

The grievance committee found no probable cause and voted 7-0 to dismiss all complaints.

Panel opts not to pass 'Caylee's law'

DES MOINES -- A legislative panel on Wednesday rejected a proposal requiring parents to report their missing children, making Iowa the latest state to have a so-called Caylee's law stall.

Lawmakers on the panel opposed the measure out of concern it was too broad. It would require parents to know their children were safe in any 24-hour period.

At least 17 states have introduced similar bills in response to the Casey Anthony case. The Florida woman was charged and ultimately acquitted of murder in the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony didn't report her daughter missing for a month, and it took six months for the child's body to be found in woods near her grandparents' home in Orlando.

Rep. Jeff Kaufmann, who co-sponsored the Iowa bill, acknowledged the measure needs more work. "We clearly are moving too fast on this," said Kaufmann, R-Wilton.

By not approving the bill, the panel made it likely the proposal will be dropped for this session.

Rich Williams, a policy associate with the National Conference of State Legislature's Criminal Justice Program, said New Jersey is the only state of those 17 considering measures to have approved a law.

I hope the sponsors in the states keep working to tweek the bill so that it is iron-clad.
I could not stand to see someone let off on glitches with the law.

Good morning Monkeys---I don't understand the problem with a law which states that a parent should know their child is safe for each 24 hour period. Shouldn't a parent know their child is safe every minute of every day?  I think the law should read that a parent should know their child is safe at all times. 

While a law requiring the reporting to authorities of a missing child is certainly a good idea, I don't think that people like Casey Anthony and others who murder their children would particularly care about what the law requires. After all, there are laws against murder but they do it anyway.  However, if a child is missing and the parent didn't report it, at least there would be a penalty for not doing so.  In the case of the Anthony jury, though, they probably wouldn't convict.

I wonder what Miss Skankypants is up to recently.  No good, of course.

heard this today. this won't be popular and I hate Casey Anthony, but I do think that Zenaida will lose this case.I really don't think that she has a case against Casey, as much as I would like for her to be able to win this case ...just my honest opinion...

I agree with you Cookie and said so in the comments to this article. Matt Morgan responded to me by saying, "Have Faith".  I hope he knows something we don't. It's way past time for the killer to be held accountable for her doings.  I'm not gonna hold my breath, that's for sure.  I keep wondering why they never held Cindy accountable, too, for all the harm she brought to ZG. She was the one who went public with the accusation.

WESH-Channel 2 called attention to Cindy Anthony’s statement of support her for daughter.

WESH’s Michele Meredith highlighted that Anthony’s attorneys said their client ”never identified the plaintiff as her made-up Zanny the nanny” and ”the plaintiff voluntarily injected herself into the public eye doing TV interviews.”

Matt Morgan, an attorney for Gonzalez, countered that police sought out his client and she didn’t seek publicity.

Meredith also highlighted the Anthony attorneys’ view that the Gonzalez lawsuit has been “a fictional play set in the theater of the absurd.”

Matt Morgan told Meredith that “it is fictional play to think that this case has no merit.”

Lying to the police when a child goes missing would be a felony under a measure unanimously passed by the Florida House this afternoon and almost certain to be approved by the Senate.

Joe Negron, R-Stuart, would make it a third-degree felony for parents or guardians to lie to law enforcement officials during an investigation when a child under the age of 16 is missing and is seriously injured or dies. Each count would be punishable by up to 5 years in prison and up to $5,000.

Under the proposal, Casey Anthony could have been sentenced to 20 years behind bars for misleading police in the investigation into her missing daughter, who was later found dead.

I think she still could have been jailed, for lying to FBI agents Scott Bolin and Nick Savage. That is a crime.  No one seems to bother to enforce that detail though...

Casey Anthony team tries to delay trial

ORLANDO -- Casey Anthony's lawyer has filed a new motion to continue her civil trial until a judge issues a ruling on a previous motion.

Attorney Charles Greene filed the motion Wednesday, asking for at least a 60-day delay from the time the court rules on some previous motions.

The latest motion comes just a week after Greene filed a motion asking for the case to be dismissed, because the plaintiff, Zenaida Gonzalez, could not prove defamation.

I tweeted her and asked if this letter was before or after 10/14/08.  She still hasn't responded.  So many people have always said that there is just a bit of truth in Casey's lies and I believe the first part of this statement is true....How can I love one.....  We know she never did love Caylee, only used her and then killed her.   I wish there was a way to tell if this is really K Chester.

Hi Tupelo.  If so, that would be quite interesting.  Might also help explain why, in the recorded phone call from jail on 7/16/08, KChester, though upset herself, didn't seem flabbergasted (as we all were) by FCA's lack of concern about Caylee's absence.  Then again, if it's legit, it could also simply document another of FCA's lies, such as "Caylee was a product of rape" or some such.

An excerpt from Casey's conversation with FBI Agent Nick Savage on 10/14/2008.

Casey lied to him directly, making the statement that she believes Caylee is alive when she knows the truth is otherwise, as well as stating that everyone's goal, including hers, is to find Caylee; and lied to him indirectly, implying that the reason a live Caylee has not been found to date is the failure of OCSO/FBI to follow up on ALL the thousands of tips that have come in.

AS: Hmm, I don’t believe he was ever telling us the door was open. I mean..
CA: Well maybe not to you directly but I know to Sergeant Allen. I was sitting there even one of the time he spoke with him. So I’ve heard the words come out of his mouth even myself directed to other people that maybe didn’t either relay the message or took it a different way. So I don’t know. I think the lack of communication has put people in opposite corners when everybody has the same goal. Which is to find Caylee.
AS: Do you think the matter could have been resolved a bit differently?
CA: Absolutely in a lot of aspects. And that’s a conversation that I’ve had not only with my attorney but with my family.
AS: Alright
CA: So I mean we all still feel, I as a Mom I know in my gut there’s the feeling as a parent you know certain things about your child you can feel that connection. And I have still have that feeling that presence I know that she’s alive. Whether you have a bucket load of evidence downstairs that contradicts that and says otherwise. Or all you have is speculation. Or, or nothing at all. I mean whatever that is there’s still that chance with all these tips that have come through I know that it’s been speculated how many thousands of tips have come through.
AS: There’s been a lot.
CA:There have been a lot. I know I’ve seen the...
AS: But you also know how many have been....
CA: I know that a lot have been discredited but...
AS: We ran them down and....
CA: Is every...
AS: ..and we had more speculation.
