There were rumours of this last Sept....hoping it isn't true this time.  Also rumours spread not long ago that Cher had died/not true

updated tonight

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

 ::snipping2::

Among her hits were "How Will I Know," "Saving All My Love for You" and "I Will Always Love You." She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies like "The Bodyguard."

But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.

Whitney Houston was to attend Clive Davis' party tonight
February 11, 2012

Whitney Houston was among the A-list performers planning to attend veteran music mogul Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel, the see-and-be-seen event of the year.

Earlier this week, the 79-year-old Davis perused page after page of guest lists in a bungalow at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where he conducts business when he’s in the Los Angeles area. Among those Houston was expected to rub elbows with: Quincy Jones, Tony Bennett, Akon, Cee Lo Green, Miley Cyrus, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Jennifer Hudson, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello and Diana Krall.

Whitney Houston
One of the most celebrated female singers of all time until her image as America's sweetheart was ravaged by drug use

guardian.co.uk, Saturday 11 February 2012 21.03 EST

 ::snipping2::
Houston was gospel-trained, but her voice also lent itself to R&B, pop and ballads, and she was adept at each style. It was a ballad that provided her biggest hit, a 1992 cover version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You. Her melodramatic rendition, featuring one of her most powerful vocals, sold 12 million copies worldwide, making it one of the biggest singles of all time.

Her total record sales topped 170 million, putting her in an elite group of female superstars that included Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, both of whom were heavily influenced by her emotional, vibrato-laden style.

Houston often gravitated to dramatic songs with lyrics about triumphing over the odds, and has been credited with inventing the "pop diva" genre that has inspired singers to the present day. She was also the first black woman to break through the colour bar at the all-important MTV, which hitherto had played white artists almost exclusively. The station's heavy rotation of her videos made her a familiar face to Middle America, and her mix of glamour, talent and approachability made her an aspirational figure for millions of teenage girls, both black and white. A US magazine editor dubbed her "the first black America's sweetheart".

Whitney Houston's posthumous turn: As star of 'Sparkle'
February 11, 2012

The death of Whitney Houston at the age of 48 is a deep loss for the music world. But it also has reverberations in another artistic realm--the movies.

Houston had recently finished shooting "Sparkle," the remake of the 1976 Irene Cara film that, eerily, focuses on talented young musicians whose lives are ruined by addiction. Houston also served as an executive producer on the movie, acquiring rights to the original film more than a decade ago. The movie, shot this past fall and currently in post-production, is scheduled to be released in August. No word yet on any release-date changes; we're awaiting word from a producer.

Whitney Houston's death: 'No signs of foul play,' police say
February 11, 2012

Whitney Houston was found unresponsive in a room at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday afternoon by paramedics who performed CPR for about 20 minutes before declaring the pop star dead.

Authorities said they don't have a cause of death.

"Nothing obvious at this time," Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen told reporters at a news conference. "No signs of foul play."

The Beverly Hills Fire Department said it was called to the hotel about 3:30 p.m. and Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.

Houston, 48, was in the Los Angeles area for a musical tribute for music executive Clive Davis and had performed earlier this week.

Houston was planning to attend Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party Saturday at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Whitney Houston dead: She was spotted displaying erratic behavior
February 11, 2012

 ::snipping2::

PHOTOS: Whitney Houston | 1963-2012

The Hilton is the scene for Davis’ annual gala. On Thursday, Houston dropped by the rehearsals to offer vocal tips for Brandy and Monica, who were slated to be one of the evening’s headliners.

Press, including The Times, were in attendance for a junket with the reunited R&B divas and Davis. Though Houston greeted people her with a warm smile, she appeared disheveled in mismatched clothes and hair that was dripping wet with either sweat or water.

The visibly bloated singer displayed erratic behavior throughout the afternoon -- flailing her hands frenetically as she spoke to Brandy and Monica, skipping around the ballroom in a child-like fashion and wandering aimlessly about the lobby. It was mentioned by a Grammy staffer that security personnel received calls of the singer doing handstands by the pool.

After leaving rehearsals, Houston returned to the ballroom -- with her teenage daughter Bobbi Kristina in tow -- as camera crews set up for interviews. The singer smelled of alcohol and cigarettes. A Grammy staffer said that during the interviews with Brandy, Monica and Clive, Houston was dancing just off camera to make the singers and Davis laugh. Grammy personnel expressed concern that she'd be caught on camera, and that reporters would write about her behavior.

Finally her daughter pulled Houston out of the room, and the singer skipped off. In our post of the event, we called Houston's behavior "loose and lively."

Singer Whitney Houston found dead
Published February 12, 2012

LOS ANGELES –  Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died, Fox News confirms. She was 48.

The Beverly Hills Police Department responded to an emergency call at the Beverly Hills Hotel Saturday, Lt. Mark Rosen, of the Bevery Hills Police Department said.

Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, died Saturday in Beverly Hills. She was 48.

Members of hotel staff and fire department officials attempted to revive a person on the fourth floor, who has since been confirmed to be Houston, Rosen said.

Officials did not see obvious signs of criminal intent, and are currently investigating to determine the cause of death, he said.

 ::snipping2::

Brown reportedly broke down back stage before a show with his band New Edition in Southhaven, a few miles south of Memphis. He opted against joining his bandmates for the first song.
He appeared onstage for a second song and then, after another, Brown shouted, "I love you, Whitney," before blowing a kiss to the sky with visibly teary eyes.

Her longtime mentor Clive Davis held his annual concert and dinner Saturday at the hotel where her body was found. Producer Jimmy Jam, who had worked with Houston, said he anticipated the evening would become a tribute to her.

Aretha Franklin, her godmother, also said she was stunned.
"I just can't talk about it now," Franklin said in a short statement. "It's so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn't believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen."

I bought tickets years ago to see her in concert.  That is how much I loved her music.  Her performance was sad. She just stood still on stage, with no affect, singing words.  The worst "concert" I had ever been to.  It was so clear, back then even, she had a serious problem.  I am surprised her managers allowed her to stay on the stage, it was that bad.

Just my observation...

Whitney Houston Prescriptions Found Possible Drowning

No illegal drugs have been found in the hotel room where Whitney Houston died -- at least not yet -- but prescription drugs were present, and it's possible the singer drowned in the bathtub ... TMZ has learned.

Sources tell us ... when EMTs arrived Whitney's body was already removed from the bathtub so it will take an autopsy to determine if she OD'd, drowned or died from some other cause.

Informed sources tell us ... Beverly Hills cops -- who were still searching the room at the time this story was posted -- found various pill bottles. There was no evidence that Whitney was drinking alcohol in the room.

Whitney's body was just removed from the room on a gurney.  It will go to the morgue for an autopsy to determine cause of death.

Singer Whitney Houston is dead at age 48, her rep told the Associated Press.

UPDATE! TMZ is now reporting that Whitney Houston possibly drowned in the bathtub where she was found unresponsive. By the time EMTs reached the singer, she had been taken out of the bathtub, so right now it’s uncertain if she did drown. Prescription drugs were also found at the seen. Her body was removed form the hotel late last night, and an autopsy will be performed soon.

Right now the cause of death has not been revealed, but her publicist Kristen Foster confirmed that the troubled pop queen had died. TMZ, who are usually right about these kinds of things, say she was found unresponsive at the Beverly Hilton hotel today. Paramedics attempted CPR, but she was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. today. Her body has already been identified by family.

Whitney’s mom Cissy Houston said she spoke with Whitney on the phone about thirty minutes before she was believed to have died, and she reportedly sounded fine and was talking about going to Clive Davis’ Grammy party tonight, which is going on right now as planned without Clive in attendance.
This information seems to be gleaned from a statement from Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Mark Rosen, who also sent a statement to People:

“I can confirm that Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We received a call at 3:43 p.m. from hotel security and Beverly Hills Fire and police responded minutes later. It’s unclear who notified hotel staff because she has quite an entourage here at the hotel. We attempted to resuscitate her, to no avail.”

There is no “obvious” evidence of foul play, but there is an ongoing investigation. She was found in the bathtub, and a friend told CNN that her friend, and rumored lover Ray-J found her body. However, Ray-J’s publicist says that Ray-J was not even near the hotel at the time Whitney’s body was discovered.

TMZ reports that Whitney partied heavily at the Beverly Hilton hotel bar the night before her death. Her entourage was reportedly drinking, and being very loud. The Daily Mail posted photos of Whitney Thursday emerging from a nightclub looking completely disheveled with what looked like blood dripping from her leg. While she was in the nightclub, she performed a song on stage, what is believed to be her last performance.

Bobby Brown is reportedly “beside himself” with grief and experiencing crying fits over his ex-wife’s death.

Simon Cowell was on Piers Morgan tonight live, when they were interrupted with news of Whitney’s death. Cowell then confirmed that he was considering Whitney to be a judge on The X Factor.

 ::snipping2::

The six-time Grammy winner was seen out and about earlier this week with Ray-J.

She leaves behind 18-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. She recently filmed a movie, Sparkle, with Jordin Sparks that’s set to release August 10, 2012.

Whitney Houston’s Tumultuous Final Days

Anyone who'd followed reports of Whitney Houston's bizarre behavior in the days leading up to the Grammys had to have been "shocked, but not surprised" at reports of her demise, as the saying goes. Thursday in particular had been an obviously rough day in public for the troubled singer, whose appearance and behavior raised eyebrows among reporters, photographers, and regular folks who witnessed her erratic rounds.

First she first visited Brandy, Monica, and Clive Davis at rehearsals for the mogul's pre-Grammys party, where a Los Angeles Times reporter described her as reeking of alcohol, "visibly bloated," and "disheveled in mismatched clothes and hair that was dripping wet with either sweat or water." According to the Times, when Houston wasn't mugging and gesticulating wildly for Brandy and Monica — who were doing a media junket, as well as preparing a duet — she was alternately skipping around the lobby or "wandering aimlessly" around the Beverly Hills Hotel grounds. Reportedly, guests had even called security to report the singer doing handstands by the hotel pool.
 ::snipping2::
Houston's final public performance happened at the club that night. It lasted just under a minute, as she sang "Jesus Loves Me" with Price in an impromptu, ramshackle duet captured by any number of videographers in the crowd. Perhaps needless to say, she wasn't in her very best voice for what turned out to be her swansong appearance.

Whitney Houston apparently drowned in bath after ingesting cocktail of prescription sedatives

Officials won't have definitive answers for several weeks

Whitney Houston apparently drowned in her bath after ingesting a cocktail of prescription sedatives — the latest in a string of accidental celebrity overdoses on legal pills.

An autopsy was performed Sunday but officials said they wouldn’t have any definitive answers until drug tests are completed in several weeks.

“At this time, her cause of death is deferred pending toxicology and further testing,” said Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter.

“I know there are reports that she drowned or overdosed. We won’t make the final determination until all the tests are in,” he said.

Jennifer Hudson Pays Tribute to Whitney Houston at Grammys: Watch
by Erika Ramirez, N.Y.   |   February 12, 2012 11:25 EST

For me, the only thing that feels right begins with a prayer -- for a woman who we loved. For our fallen sister, Whitney Houston," LL Cool J said of the late legend. The host opened the 54th Annual Grammy Awards with a prayer for Houston.

Moments after news broke of Houston's death Saturday (Feb. 11), the Recording Academy put together a classic tribute to the legend, last minute.

Jennifer Hudson, who looked at Whitney Houston as a mentor belted the late singer's hit, "I Will Always Love You," with such passion. Hudson emphasized on Houston's vocal depth by staying true to her own, owning the classic from the start.

CBS/AP)  Updated at 11:45 p.m. ET

NEWARK, N.J. - The body of Whitney Houston arrived in her home state of New Jersey for a funeral to be held at week's end, according to multiple report.

The plane carrying Houston left Los Angeles late Monday and arrived later at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, a few miles west of Manhattan, Reuters reports.

Houston's family raised the possibility of holding a wake Thursday and funeral Friday at Newark's Prudential Center, an arena that hosts college and professional sport events and seats about 18,000.

The photo shows the tub still filled with water.

 ::MonkeyEek::

There's a gravy dish at the bottom of the tub, which Whitney typically filled with olive oil to keep her skin soft.
Notice the two circular objects -- they're hair ties.

And there's a towel at the bottom of the tub -- possibly worn by Whitney to keep her hair dry while she was bathing.

ME:
::MonkeyNoNo::  Did she fall in the tub?  She had olive oil in the water to keep her skin soft:)

I would try putting olive oil in the tub, but I would fall on my rump.  I am thinking she may have simply took a dive or slipped.
 MY question's and my opinion's.

Whitney Houston's autopsy: An inside look
Published February 13, 2012 | On the Record | On the Record
Special Guests: Dr. Michael Baden

 ::snipping2::

VAN SUSTEREN: Dr. Baden, why does it take so long to get toxicology results?

BADEN: Well, what's happening is the autopsy took a day. The toxicology will probably -- 95 percent of it will be finished by the end of the week. But then they want to leave themselves time to do other studies, if necessary, look for other drugs that weren't looked for the first time, look at the microscopic slides because if there were infections, say a myocarditis in the heart, or encephalitis, you might not -- you'd see that only under the microscope on the microscopic slides.

So I'm sure they're going to do a thorough examination to rule out any other infectious or natural cause of death, if it's there.

VAN SUSTEREN: Is it because of the backlog in the labs, or is it because they actually have to do something that takes weeks?

BADEN: No. If they put in the backlog, then it'll take a long time. But this type of investigation should go to the front of the line. There shouldn't be a backlog in testing Whitney's blood and other tissues.

The testing itself takes about a week itself. For the normal, general unknown, that would be done. But there are lots of other drugs that aren't included in the initial tests. And they want to leave themselves time in case they have to do special tests because of other things they learn about drugs that she might have been exposed to.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, why do you think, or what were the police and the investigators and the coroner and everyone else doing in that hotel room for so long? Because her body remained in that room for an awful long time.

BADEN: Yes, it did, for some 9 hours. First of all, apart from photographing the scene and -- for some reason, they felt they had to get a court order to make sure they were in line legally to look for any drugs that might not be out in front of them. They could take whatever they see, but if they're going to search in drawers, under the mattress, they thought they had to get a court order.

And also, they spent a lot of time interviewing every person who saw the scene, who was there, the people mentioned -- the people from the people from hotel, any hotel persons who came up, through the fire department people, EMT people, to see what each one of them saw and said.

Remember, they were told that she went into the bathtub under her own volition, but the police want to make sure that she wasn't carried in there because she had lost conscious. A healthy person, a person who's conscious, will not drown in bathtub unless something happens to them -- a heart attack, a brain hemorrhage, if she fell down and hit her head and got a subdural hemorrhage, so that -- because drugs themselves can cause her to lose consciousness...

VAN SUSTEREN: Are you saying that you can't fall asleep in the bathtub and slip down and drown? It's got to be something else. I mean, if you're asleep and you fall into the water, are you going to wake up?

BADEN: Yes. Yes. If -- many people fall asleep relaxing in the bathtub. They don't drown because if their nose and mouth goes under the water, it'll wake them up. You have to be unconscious to drown.

‘Star-studded choir’ to sing at Whitney Houston’s  funeral Saturday at Newark church she grew up in
Published: Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 9:49 AM
Updated: Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 3:01 PM

A star-studded choir of music legends will perform at Whitney Houston’s funeral, the pastor at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark said Tuesday.

The pop diva will receive a send-off fit for the pop icon she was when mourners pack into her childhood church on Sussex Avenue at noon Saturday.

“The family has made it very clear there is going to be a strong musical celebration of her life,” Pastor Joe Carter told the Daily News.

He stopped short of revealing who would be in the exclusive choir.

“I can’t name names,” he added.

Whitney comes from a celebrated musical family.

Her mother is gospel singer Cissy Houston, she was cousins with Dionne Warwick, and Aretha Franklin was her godmother.

The “I Will Always Love You” singer also counted Chaka Khan as one of her closest friends.

R&B singer Kelly Price, who shared the stage with Whitney on her last ever performance, and Jennifer Hudson are also expected to attend.

Carolyn Whigham, owner of Whigham Funeral Home, said the singer’s family had personally made the arrangements and the service would be by “invitation only.”

Whitney Houston: More Sparkle Set Sources Insist Star "Was in Good Shape"

Good afternoon Monkey's,

Trimm,

She looked like she was in good shape to me, in the video clips. She was reportly giddy... I would be doing
cart wheels around the pool, too, if I were her.  I really loved her arms, she must have worked out.
I remember her arms were so skinny, a few years ago.  I think the press, has overblown her death for rating's.

I wonder if her life would have been different if it were not for B.B.? ::MonkeyAngel:: God Bless her soul.

You probably already knew that Whitney Houston's recording of "I Will Love You" is one of the biggest singles of the last 25 years... and the song that defined her legacy, as proven by its use as the lone ballad of homage to Houston at Sunday night's Grammys. Maybe you even know that a not-so-behind-the-scenes songsmith named Dolly Parton wrote and first recorded it, almost 20 years before Whitney spent a then-record 14 weeks at the top of the singles chart in 1992-93 with what turned out to be her signature song.

But did you know that Kevin Costner is the one who found the song for Houston? That a cash dispute scotched an Elvis Presley recording of the tune? Or that Saddam Hussein was also a huge fan? Here are a dozen lesser-known facts about the power ballad that America and the world will always love:

Whitney Houston climbs pop charts again after death
Published on Feb 15, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Whitney Houston's songs were rocketing up the pop charts on Tuesday, in some cases a quarter-century after their initial release, as fans sought to recapture the magic of the diva's iconic voice in the wake of her death.

Amazon.com said on its website that seven of the top 10 bestselling music collections were recordings from Houston, while her Greatest Hits album was the top seller on iTunes.

Meanwhile, British music tracker Official Charts said that sales from Sunday through to midnight on Monday were so brisk that seven of Houston's recordings were 'heading for the Top 40.' The company said in a statement that topping the sales was Houston's smash hit I Will Always Love You, her cover of a classic tune by country star Dolly Parton. Houston's version of the ballad spent 10 weeks at number one 20 years ago this year.

Whitney Houston death: Subpoenas likely for doctors, pharmacies
February 15, 2012 |  8:10 am

Investigators are expected to serve subpoenas on doctors and pharmacies this week as they try to determine whether prescription drugs found in Whitney Houston's hotel room had anything to do with her death, according to a source with knowledge of the case.

“Subpoena power is one of the wonderful tools an investigator uses to get information from pharmacies and doctors,” said Dave Campbell, a retired captain from the coroner’s office. “You’re primarily seeking documents, not the persons who treated or prescribed, because you are doing a death investigation, not a criminal investigation.”

Campbell said investigators generally concentrate on the physicians most clearly connected to any prescription drugs recovered or conditions they know about. “Your saw a lot of this in the Michael Jackson case and I’m sure it will be useful in this incidence," Campbell added, referring to death investigation focusing on prescription drugs launched after the singer died in 2009.

Bobby Brown: Bobbi Kristina "Doing Much Better" as Whitney Houston Funeral Approaches
Today 10:31 AM PST by Rebecca Macatee

Understandably, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown's 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina, is going through a tough time right now.

She was rushed to the hospital twice over the weekend to be treated for stress. But thankfully, her father said today in a statement that the teen "is doing much better."
 ::snipping2::
Although there has been speculation that Brown is persona non grata at Saturday's funeral for Whitney, reportedly due to lingering friction between him and members of the Houston family, a source close to the New Edition singer says that as of now he plans on being there to be with his daughter. Additionally ABC News cites a Houston family insider saying that Brown will not be stopped from going to the invite-only event.
 ::snipping2::
The family has tentatively agreed to allow a pool camera inside Newark's New Hope Baptist Church to beam footage of the event to Houston's fans in lieu of a massive memorial service as had originally been floated. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has announced that the state's flag will be flown at half-staff on that day.

There is still no word on the final resting place of the singer, with the family apparently torn between her native New Jersey or her adopted hometown of Atlanta.

Whitney Houston's funeral Saturday will be broadcast
By Phil Gast, CNN
February 16, 2012 -- Updated 0210 GMT (1010 HKT)

(CNN) -- Saturday's funeral for legendary pop singer Whitney Houston is expected to be made available for television and web streaming from the New Jersey church where she grew up, Houston's publicist said Wednesday.
 ::snipping2::
Gospel singer and pastor Marvin L. Winans, a longtime friend of the Houston family, will give the eulogy at New Hope Baptist Church. Winans officiated at Houston's 1992 marriage to R&B singer Bobby Brown.
 ::snipping2::
Aretha Franklin, Houston's godmother, has been asked to sing at the funeral, which begins at noon, Franklin's spokeswoman said.

Others confirmed on the guest list are Chaka Khan, Bebe & CeCe Winans, songwriter Diane Warren, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, pop singer Darlene Love, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Antonio "L.A." Reid, Ray J and Brandy. Houston's cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, was in New Jersey helping the family with funeral arrangements, Warwick's publicist said

Chaka Khan was a close friend of Houston. Reid produced many of Houston's songs and Jakes co-produced Houston's last film, "Sparkle," which is scheduled to be released this summer. Houston and Jakes are listed as producers.

Ray J, a hip-hop artist, and Houston dated off and on after she was divorced from Brown.

Jackson and the Winans music family have been very close friends of the Houstons.

Composer-singer Valerie Simpson of the duo Ashford & Simpson told CNN's Susan Candiotti she will attend the funeral.

Bobby Brown Officially Invited to Whitney Houston's Funeral
2/16/2012 4:32 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Whitney Houston's family has finally reached out to Bobby Brown ... and have formally invited him to attend Whitney's funeral in NJ on Saturday ... TMZ has learned.

Houston family sources tell us, "At the last minute, the family felt that it would keep the peace at the funeral [to have Bobby there] ... even though some family members were against it."

As we previously reported, several Houston family members were strongly opposed to inviting Brown to the funeral because they blame him, in part, for contributing to Whitney's downfall.

Whitney Houston Insider Reveals Singer's Anguished Fight to Win Back Her Voice
By CHRIS CONNELLY, GLENN RUPPEL and ALICE GOMSTYN (@AliceGomstyn)
Feb. 17, 2012

Years after the peak of her success, Whitney Houston's unparalleled voice was "gone" and it took years of coaching sessions to get even part of it back, her one-time vocal coach revealed to "20/20."

"It appeared to be so damaged that when I first began working with her, I was not sure what I could do," Gary Catona said.

See the full story on "One Moment in Time: The Life of Whitney Houston," a two-hour "20/20" special, TONIGHT at 9 p.m. ET.
 ::snipping2::
For all her self-awareness and her dedication to her sessions with Catona, the vocal coach saw troubling signs that the singer was giving in to her vices.

"She knew in her heart of hearts that this special gift that she had was being undermined by her own activities," he said. "I left her house with my keyboard, and I had forgotten something, and I walked back in and she had a cigarette in her hand. And she saw me. She said, 'Oh Gary,' and she hugged me, and threw the cigarette over my shoulder as she was hugging me."

By 2009, Houston did manage to release what was largely billed as a comeback album, "I Look to You."

"When I got her at her best, she was about 75 to 80 percent," said Catona, whose work with her ended that year.

Christie under fire for flag tribute to Whitney Houston
February 16, 2012|By Matt Katz, Inquirer Trenton Bureau

Should flags fly at half-staff to mark the death of Whitney Houston?

That question has become the center of the latest Internet-inspired storm cloud to hover over Gov. Christie.

Christie announced Tuesday at a news conference that U.S. and New Jersey flags would be lowered for one day - Saturday, the day of Houston's funeral - to honor a New Jerseyan who was "an important part of the cultural fabric of this state."

As word spread via social media, response was fast and often furious. A pop star with a history of drug abuse does not deserve an honor more typically given to a service member fallen in the line of duty, many said.
 ::snipping2::
"There are many contributions that you can make to our state that merit this honor upon your death," Christie said. "Some of them are political. Some of them are military. Some of them are other avenues of public service, like police officers, firefighters, and others. And some of them are cultural."

Federal code indicates that governors should fly flags at half-staff by order of the president and also in the event of the death of a member of the military or government official from that particular state.

The code makes no specification for the deaths of pop sensations. It doesn't forbid such memorializing, either.

Key moments in Whitney Houston's life -- and last days
By the CNN Wire Staff
February 17, 2012

(CNN) -- Whitney Houston, who ruled the pop charts during the 1980s and '90s, will be laid to rest Saturday following a funeral at her childhood church in Newark, New Jersey.

A look back at key moments in Houston's life, as well as her last days:

August 9, 1963

Houston is born in Newark to gospel singer Cissy Houston. Her cousins include Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick; Houston's godmother was "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin. Houston honed her vocal skills as a child at New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother was director of sacred music.

"Whitney's mother and cousins nurtured her passion for gospel music since birth," according to a biography on Houston's website. "As a teenager, Whitney was already singing on the scene in New York."

Also while in her teens, Houston sang backup for Chaka Khan on "I'm Every Woman," a song Houston would re-record in 1992 that went on to become one of her biggest hits.

I Look To You
Lyrics

As I lay me down
Heaven hear me now
I’m lost without a cause
After giving it my all

Winter storms have come
And darkened my sun
After all that I’ve been through
Who on earth can I turn to?

Chorus:
I look to you,
I look to you
After all my strength is gone
In you I can be strong
I look to you,
I look to you
And when melodies are gone In you I hear a song
I look to you

'bout to lose my breath
There's no more fighting left
Sinking to rise no more
Searching for that open door

And every road that I've taken
Led to my regret
And I don't know if I'm go'n make it
Nothing to do but lift my head

Chorus:

My levees are broken
My walls are coming down on me
My rain is falling
Defeat is calling
I need you to set me free
Take me far away from the battle
I need you
Shine on me!

Chorus:

Newark, New Jersey (CNN) -- "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin will sing the Whitney Houston hit "The Greatest Love of All" at Houston's funeral Saturday, in what is sure to be an emotional moment during the three-hour service.

The service will feature performances by Stevie Wonder -- singing one of his hits, "Ribbon in the Sky" -- R&B star R. Kelly, Alicia Keys and gospel greats Kim Burrell and BeBe Winans.

The New Hope Baptist Church Mass Choir and the New Jersey Mass Choir will open the service. Pastor Marvin Winans will deliver the eulogy.

Bishop T.D. Jakes will deliver remarks, along with Kevin Costner, Houston's co-star in the movie "The Bodyguard;" her mentor, music mogul Clive Davis; and director-producer Tyler Perry.

Patricia Houston, the singer's sister-in-law and former manager, will speak at the end of the service, followed by Houston's cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, according to the program.
 ::snipping2::
Pastor Winans' brother, Benjamin "BeBe" Winans, said his sister, CeCe, plans to perform "Don't Cry for Me" at Saturday's service.

Houston performed the song in many countries
, Winans told A.J. Hammer of HLN's "Showbiz Tonight."

The song is about life, loss and hope:

"No one is to blame

"My death was meant to be

"Don't carry guilt or shame

"The reason why I came soon you'll see."

Whitney Houston - Don't Cry For Me (Best Quality)
Uploaded by miksimpatikwhitney on Feb 27, 2008

Whitney Houston singing Don't cry for me [Live at the Commitment for life AIDS Benefit, 1994]
---------------

Don't Cry - Whitney Houston

Here we are again
That old familiar place
Where the wind will blow
No one ever knows
The time or space

Don't cry for me
Don't shed a tear
The time I've shared with you
Will always be
And when I'm gone
Still carry on
Don't cry for me

No one is the blame
My death was meant to be
Don't carry guilt or shame
Reason why I came
Soon you'll see

Don't cry
When life is not the joy
It should be
With life comes pain
Soon time will end its course appointed
Then you will be rewarded
And all this world will see

Hello Monkey's, Thank-you for the beautiful photo of WH and her father :)

I found a very brief obit for John Houston.

Whitney was on heck of a lucky girl to be born in such a talented and resourceful family. IMO.

John Houston, 82, father of singer Whitney Houston and a longtime theatrical manager who suffered from diabetes and heart disease, died of cardiac arrest at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Well before his daughter's rise to fame, Houston managed the career of her mother and his ex-wife, gospel-soul...)

END.

NEWARK - Clapping hands and swaying to gospel hymns in the church where Whitney Houston's powerful voice once wowed her congregation, the biggest names in entertainment sang along with the choir to remember the pop superstar at her hometown funeral Saturday.

The funeral ended with a recording of Houston singing "I Will Always Love You," as pallbearers carried her casket out of the church. Her mother's sobs could be heard throughout the church, and Houston's daughter is crying too.

Houston is expected to be laid to rest near her father's grave in New Jersey.

Perhaps where tomorrow is Sunday, it will be re-broadcast on some of the news stations. I needed to get to the hospital to see an old friend, I missed it and my friend wasn't dying, lol, but it was good to see him. No contact since the mid-90's.  Dated a lot in the early 70's and on and off over the years...crap-shut up.  RIP Whitney, I WILL always love you :(

Whitney Houston laid to rest
By msnbc.com news services

Whitney Houston was laid to rest Sunday in a private ceremony at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, N.J. She was buried next to her father, John Russell Houston, who was interred in 2003.

The singer passed away on Feb. 11 at age 48.

Fans and onlookers gathered in several places along the route the motorcade took from the Newark funeral home to the cemetery about 20 miles away. Many held signs wishing Houston farewell and some created impromptu memorials. Some even slowly ran alongside the hearse as it began the journey to Houston's gravesite. Several yelled out "We love you, Whitney" as the hearse, which had a black and white headshot of the star in a window, slowly drove away.

Video footage to benefit daughter...

The 'Jesus Loves Me' singer's family made an 'undercover deal' with the media to access the four-hour service that was held in New Jersey on Saturday (February 18).

The live feed was going to be set up on The AP for several sites, but they were made to cancel the plan after just 24 hours.

A family representative for Whitney has now confirmed to TMZ that they have "agreed to license footage to several media outlets" but only for "customary fees" and this will "help maximise the estate for the benefit of Bobbi Kristina".

Whitney Houston's Will Revealed
Airdate : 3/7/2012

INSIDE EDITION has your first look at Whitney Houston's Last Will and Testament.

The 19-page document was released on Wednesday in Atlanta, Georgia where it was filed, and here are the details:

Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina gets everything: all of Houston's money, furniture, clothing, personal effects, jewelry, and cars.

The money will be placed in a trust until Bobbi Kristina, who is now 19, turns 21. She gets more money when she turns 25 and the rest when she is 30.

Houston's beloved mom Cissy is the executor; her brother and sister-in-law are the trustees.

Houston first drafted the Will in 1993 and amended the will in April 2000 when she was still married to Bobby Brown.

Brown is mentioned in the Will but get's nothing.

The will also states if Bobbi Kristina had died before Whitney, her ex, Bobby Brown, her mother Cissy and other relatives would share the assets.

Exclusive: News Sites Are Running an Outdated Whitney Houston Will
03/08/12 12:46am
Roger Friedman

“Inside Edition” and The New York Post sparked a frenzy on Wednesday night. They ran an outdated version of Whitney Houston’s will. We have the right one, with the 2004 codicil and all the changes Houston made to the Will. It’s posted right now at  http://blogs.forbes.com/rogerfriedman/. It’s really embarrassing, too, because I posted the news of the updated Will around 7pm and the codicil exclusively a couple of hours later with a statement from Whitney’s lawyer, Kenneth Meiselas. The other news organizations also did not know that today in Atlanta, the Houston went into probate court and named Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister in law and manager, as executor. Mother Cissy Houston is now a trustee. But on the Forbes site you can read the codicil and see the statement. If the 2000 codicil had stood, Whitney’s other sister-in-law, Donna Houston, and her husband, Michael, would have been trustees and Whitney’s old lawyer, Sheldon Platt, would have been the executor.  ::snipping2::

Whitney Houston death probe nears end; toxicology results pending
March 09, 2012

Investigators of singer Whitney Houston's death have wrapped up the logistical part of their inquiry by having contacted all physicians and pharmacies with ties to Houston, and nothing so far appears criminal, sources close to the investigation said Friday.

Authorities, however, said they're still reviewing additional medical information that will be used in their final ruling on her cause of death, and Houston's toxicology report should be complete "on or around March 23rd," the sources told CNN.

Officials are still trying to speak with Houston's only child, Bobbi Kristina Brown, 18, before closing the case, the sources said.

Whitney Houston's cause of death revealed by L.A. coroner

The toxicology report is in.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office has determined that Whitney Houston's official cause of death is: "drowning and effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use."
 ::snipping2::
The coroner's office also said the manner of death was an "accident."

However, the toxicology report adds that "Cocaine and metabolites were identified and were contributory to the death. Marijuana, Alprazolam (Xanax), Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) and Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) were identified but did not contribute to the death."

An autopsy was conducted the day after she died. Capt. John Kades of the Los Angeles County coroner's office said at the time there was no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston's body. Prescription pill bottles were found in her room, but the number of pills were "not in alarming amounts," said officials.

Coroner: Whitney Houston died from drowning, heart disease, cocaine use
Published March 22, 2012

The Los Angeles County Coroner ruled Thursday that the final cause of Whitney Houston's death was drowning, as well as from effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.

According to Chief Medical Examiner Anthony T. Hernandez's report, there was no foul play involved in the Feb. 11 death of Houston. She was found submerged in a bathtub filled with water at the Beverly Hills Hilton just hours before she was due to perform at Clive Davis' Grammy Party.

Toxicology reports found metabolites also contributed to her death. Traces of marijuana and the prescription drugs Xanax, Flexiril and over-the-counter Benadryl were also found in her system, but did not play a role.

The announcement Thursday ends weeks of speculation about what killed the Grammy-winning singer.

Several bottles of prescription medications were found in her hotel room, but coroner's officials said they weren't in excessive quantities.

Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey says the results indicated Houston was a chronic cocaine user.

Whitney Houston: Police see no further criminal investigation
March 24, 2012

Beverly Hills police said the preliminary coroner's report on the death of Whitney Houston raises no issues that would require further criminal investigation.

Detectives from the department have been looking into the circumstances of the singer's death Feb. 11. But based on the coroner's report, Lt. Mark Rosen said the police case will be closed within a few weeks.

“Unless something changes in the final report, this investigation will end,” he said.

Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston will undoubtedly remain connected through their smash hit song “I Will Always Love You,” written by Parton and performed by Houston. But according to the country crooner, that connection runs much deeper.
 ::snipping2::
“[It] just shattered me to hear that song played under those conditions,” Parton said during an interview with ABC’s Nightline to air Wednesday. “I thought my heart was gonna stop. It just pierced me like a knife. It’s just -- I can’t explain that feeling, to think that that was so final for her, and that that was my words and my feeing -- I would forever be so connected to her.”
 ::snipping2::
“When Whitney did ‘I Will Always Love You,’ I mean look what a grand song she made out of that simple, heartfelt, you know, song… it was just amazing,” she said. “Whitney is the one who took it worldwide and really made it a household word – or song, I should say – so I’ll always be thankful to her for that.

Whitney Houston clothes, jewelry auctioned
By Alan Duke, CNN
April 2, 2012

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Bidders paid a total of $80,000 for clothes and jewelry once owned by Whitney Houston in a Beverly Hills auction that took place Saturday just blocks from where the singer died seven weeks ago.

Julien's "Hollywood Legends" auction also includes Charlie Chaplin's famous bowler hat and bamboo cane and a coat worn by Clark Gable in "Gone With the Wind."

Five dresses and three ensembles from Houston's wardrobe were originally sold in a 2007 auction ordered by a judge to settle a storage debt Houston owed to a New Jersey company.

A bustier embellished with elaborate beading, rhinestones and pearls brought $19,200 in bidding Saturday, according to the auction website. Houston wore it onstage during concerts, but lost it in the storage auction, according to Julien's.

The grey velvet gown Houston wore when she attended the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Party with then-husband Bobby Brown in 1996 sold for $11,520.

This woman's body was ravaged with burn marks and scars from years of abuse.  It's such a shame that two of the biggest icons from the 1980's (Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson) were such drug abusers.

Whitney Houston death probe closed; 911 call released
By Alan Duke, CNN
April 12, 2012 -- Updated 0939 GMT (1739 HKT)

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The police investigation of Whitney Houston's death is "officially closed" with the conclusion that her death was an accidental drowning, the Beverly Hills Police Department said Wednesday.

With the case closed, police released the recording of the 911 emergency call in which a hotel security officer said the woman who called for help from Houston's room was "irate and pretty much out of it."

Investigators "found no evidence of foul play," a police statement said. "Based on the findings of our investigation and our review of the coroner's report, we have determined that this is not a criminal matter."

The Los Angeles County coroner released its autopsy report a week ago saying Houston's February 11 death was an accidental drowning with the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use" as contributing factors.

The Beverly Hilton security officer did not identify Houston in the 911 call.

FBI releases its records on Whitney Houston
March 4, 2013

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The FBI has released its files on a trio of investigations the agency conducted on behalf of Whitney Houston.

The records released Monday show the agency conducted one investigation into an alleged extortion attempt in 1992, but agents and prosecutors determined no crime occurred.

Agents also found no evidence of criminal threats to the singer in fan mail that was sent to the FBI for investigation in 1988 and 1999.

The 128-page file covers the height of the Grammy-winning singer's popularity but does not contain any new personal details.
