Chardon High School Shooting: Three Dead, Three Injured

One student has died following a shooting this morning at Chardon High School in Ohio. Four others were injured and the shooter is in custody.

"There is one deceased student," Chardon Police Chief Tim McKenna said at a news conference. "That's the sad news for all of us today."

Police will not yet identify the gunman, saying only that he has not yet been charged and that he is a juvenile.

The gunman opened fire with a handgun just before 8 a.m. in the school cafeteria where students were eating breakfast, authorities and witnesses said.

The shooter was chased out of the building by a teacher and later turned himself in to a passerby, authorities said. Police have not yet confirmed whether the gunman was a student at the school, but junior Heather Ziska told the Associated Press she just a few feet away when he opened fire and she recognized the shooter as a fellow student.

The suspect is in custody at Geauga County Safety Center, according to ABC News' Cleveland affiliate WEWS.

Chardon High School shooting suspect may have used relative's gun

CHARDON, Ohio --  The teenager suspected in Chardon school shooting struggled with a broken family and did poorly in school, then appeared to turn himself around once he was taken in by grandparents and began to attend an alternative school, longtime neighbors and friends said Wednesday.

To a person, they expressed disbelief at how the quiet but friendly boy could now be a suspect in a shooting that left three people dead and appears to have involved a gun that disappeared from his grandfather's barn.
 ::snipping2::
The gun, a .22 caliber revolver, was noticed as missing after Monday's shootings and fits the description of the pistol that reportedly was used to kill three students and wound two others at Chardon High School, said Henderson, a retired police officer and former Geauga County sheriff. He said he has spoken to the grandfather, Thomas Lane, about the gun.

The suspect's grandfather believes the gun is the same, "because the gun was there the day before, in the barn," said Henderson, 74, who says he's been friends with the boy's family for nearly 50 years.
 ::snipping2::
Lane, 17, admitted taking a pistol and a knife to the 1,100-student Chardon High and firing 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table, prosecutor David Joyce said.

A police report said 33 officers from around the area responded to what was first described as a "shooting accidental" and was over in less than a minute. Emergency crews from four fire departments also responded, according to the report obtained by the AP through a public records request.
 ::snipping2::
Prosecutors have until Thursday to bring charges and are expected to ask that Lane be tried as an adult. He will probably be charged with three counts of aggravated murder and other offenses, Joyce said.

Joyce described suspect Lane as "someone who's not well" and said the teen didn't know the victims but chose them randomly.
Killed were Demetrius Hewlin, 16, Russell King Jr., 17, and Daniel Parmertor, 16.

An 18-year-old girl who was hurt in the shootings was released from the hospital Tuesday and was home with family. The girl's family declined to comment Wednesday. The second injured teen remained in serious condition at a suburban Cleveland hospital.

Both sides in the legal case are under a gag order imposed by the judge at the prosecutor's request. The judge also barred media outlets from taking photos of the faces of the suspect and some of his relatives.

Coach praised after Ohio school shooting speaks
By THOMAS J. SHEERAN, Associated Press
March 2, 2012

HARDON, Ohio (AP) — An assistant football coach credited with chasing a teenage gunman from an Ohio school said Thursday that he wanted families of the three children slain in a shooting spree to know that he comforted the teens as they lay dying after the attack.

"I want you to know I was with them. I prayed with them. I wiped their tears and I know God was with them," an emotional Frank Hall said during a news conference shortly after the 17-year-old suspect was charged in the rampage.
 ::snipping2::
T.J. Lane was charged Thursday with killing three students, the first step in proceedings that could see him charged as an adult and facing the possibility of life without parole if convicted.

The charges filed in Geauga County juvenile court accuse Lane of killing three students and wounding two others in the shooting Monday morning at Chardon High School, about 30 miles east of Cleveland.

He is charged with three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault.

No motive has been determined. Prosecutor David Joyce has said that victims were selected at random and that Lane is someone "who's not well."
 ::snipping2::
Killed were Demetrius Hewlin, 16, Russell King Jr., 17, and Daniel Parmertor, 16. Parmertor's visitation is scheduled Friday in Eastlake, with a funeral Mass set for Saturday morning. Visitation is planned Monday evening in Chardon for Hewlin, and his funeral Mass is Tuesday morning. King's visitation will be Wednesday, with a funeral the next morning in Chardon.

The motive for the shooting is unclear, though Joyce has appeared to rule out theories involving bullying or drug-dealing.

Hewlin attended Chardon High. King and Parmertor were students at a vocational school and were waiting in the Chardon High cafeteria for their daily bus when they were shot.

Parmertor had just gotten his first job at a bowling alley and couldn't stop talking about how excited he was to pick up his first paycheck later this week, his parents said.

Two other students were wounded. Nick Walczak remains in serious condition. An 18-year-old girl was released from the hospital Tuesday.

EASTLAKE, Ohio (AP) — Bullying and metal detectors were on the minds of some mourners as hundreds lined up Friday at a northeast Ohio funeral home for the wake of a student killed in a high school shooting.

Sixteen-year-old Daniel Parmertor and two others were fatally shot Monday at Chardon High School. His wake in Eastlake came the same day students returned to classes.

Police were on hand under cloudy skies as students returned by car, on foot and by bus to the 1,100-student school about 30 miles east of Cleveland. Some students and parents stood outside applauding as students walked inside.

Parmertor, 16-year-old Demetrius Hewlin and 17-year-old Russell King Jr. were fatally shot and two others were seriously wounded in the Monday attack. Another 17-year-old has been charged.

Judge: Ohio school shooting case may go to adult court
March 6, 2012

CHARDON, Ohio (AP) – A 17-year-old charged in an Ohio school shooting rampage that left three students dead made a court appearance Tuesday, where a judge explained to him that the case could be sent to adult court for trial.
Authorities will decide later whether T.J. Lane will be tried as an adult and face a possible life sentence.

Lane is charged with three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault. He did not enter a plea Tuesday. He appeared before Juvenile Judge Tim Grendell, who told him his case could be moved to adult court for trial.
Grendell postponed a hearing on that matter from March 19 until April 3 because two new attorneys have joined the defense team.

Ohio town faces long recovery from school rampage
By Kim Palmer
March 8, 2012

(Reuters) - Family, friends, schoolmates and neighbors gather Thursday for the final funeral for victims of a high school shooting rampage that killed three students and left a small Ohio town torn by damage that could take months or years to heal.

In the days since the February 27 attack at Chardon High School, residents have held vigils, built memorials at the town square and school, and hung red and black ribbons on nearly every vertical surface in the town east of Cleveland.

A fund set up after the shootings has swelled to some $350,000 through donations, the sale of stickers emblazoned with "2-27-12," a recording of a vigil held February 28 and other fundraising.

The grieving has just begun, experts said.

Escaped Ohio school shooter captured hiding near a church, police say
September 12, 2014

LIMA, Ohio –  A teenager convicted of killing three students at an Ohio high school scrambled over a fence to escape a state prison with two other prisoners and was captured nearly six hours later hiding near a church, authorities said.

T.J. Lane, 19, was caught only about 100 yards from the prison by two state troopers at 1:20 a.m. Friday. A second prisoner had been caught almost immediately after the Thursday night escape, and troopers apprehended the third three hours after finding Lane.

Lane's brief taste of freedom frightened residents in Chardon, the community nearly 200 miles to the east where Lane fatally shot three students and wounded two others and then further angered people with defiant behavior in court. At his sentencing hearing last year, Lane unbuttoned a dress shirt to reveal a T-shirt scrawled with the word "killer," similar to a shirt he wore during the shootings on Feb. 27, 2012. He cursed and made an obscene gesture as the judge gave him three consecutive life sentences.

Police officers were sent late Thursday to guard the homes of the families of Lane's victims. School officials canceled classes Friday and made counseling available for students and the larger community.

"It's a trigger," district spokeswoman Ellen Ondrey said of the escape. "It takes everyone back to 2/27 and what was happening that day."

The escape occurred at Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution, a minimum- and medium-security prison in Lima about 80 miles south of Toledo.

Lane was housed on a "protective control" unit, a higher security setting than the main compound, according to a legislative prisons oversight committee statement Friday. The unit is designed to hold inmates with proven safety threats because of the notoriety of their crimes, testimony they have given or gang threats, the committee said.

An April inspection by the committee noted ongoing security concerns at the unit. Security management "remains a concern, both in terms of how the higher security inmates are handled, as well as discipline for misconduct," according to a May report by the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee. A message was left Friday with the state prisons agency.

Warden Kevin Jones said he saw Lane after he was captured and that the teen did not say anything. An investigation is underway to determine how the men, who were outside for recreation, managed to climb over the perimeter fence, the warden said.

Authorities wouldn't say whether the three prisoners planned their escapes together.

Lane was captured somewhere near a small church and cemetery that are separated from the prison by an overgrown field and a two-lane road.

Russ Hill, who has lived next to the church for two decades, said deputies alerted him about the escape and he spent the next six hours sitting in house in the dark with a gun at his side as dozens of officers searched the area with flashlights and spotlights.

"I've never felt safer any night I've been here because there were cops all over," he said. "But I wasn't about to go to sleep."

Authorities didn't release information about the prisoner who was caught almost immediately.

Authorities confirmed the third prisoner was taken into custody around 4:20 a.m. Friday but didn't immediately release how or where. That prisoner was identified as 45-year-old Clifford Opperud, who was serving time for robbery, burglary and kidnapping.

Lane pleaded guilty last year to aggravated murder charges in the shootings at Chardon High School. He said he didn't know why he shot the teens.

Prosecutors say Lane took a .22-caliber pistol to school and fired 10 shots, killing Daniel Parmertor and Demetrius Hewlin, both 16, and Russell King Jr., 17, while wounding two others. One of the wounded students is paralyzed.

Lane, who was 17 at the time, was waiting in the cafeteria for a bus to take him to an alternative school for students who don't fare well in traditional settings.

At his sentencing, Lane was defiant, smiling and smirking throughout, including while four relatives of the victims spoke.
 ::snipping3::
The escape marks the second time in about a year that the prisons department faces scrutiny over the handling of a notorious prisoner. Ariel Castro, who held three women captive in his Cleveland home for about a decade, was found dead kneeling in his cell and hanging from a sheet last September in what authorities concluded was a suicide.

School Shooter T.J. Lane a 'Coward' for Prison Break: Victim's Mom
September 12, 2014

Dina Parmertor promised she would stop thinking about her son’s killer after he was convicted last year in the deadly shooting spree at a Chardon, Ohio, high school. But the anguishing memories resurfaced overnight after Thomas “T.J.” Lane’s unexpected prison break Thursday.

While the 19-year-old murderer was captured early Friday, the episode has left Parmertor rattled — and demanding an explanation. “He looks like some wimpy weasel kid, but this is a dangerous person. He should have been watched,” she told NBC News after Lane was back in custody. “I’m so disheartened that it happened and I’m shocked,” Parmertor added. “Honestly, we want some answers and we deserve them. How could this have occurred?”

Prison officials at the Allen Correctional Institution said Lane managed to scale a perimeter fence around 7:30 p.m. along with two other inmates. Those inmates were also captured. Lane was found almost six hours later near a church just north of the prison in Lima, about 200 miles west of Chardon.

Lane fatally shot three students, including Parmertor's son, Daniel, after opening fire in the Chardon High School cafeteria in February 2012. Three others were wounded. Lane, who wasn’t a student at the school, never said why he committed the rampage, picking his victims at random. He wasn’t eligible for the death penalty because he was 17 at the time.

Before he was sentenced to life in prison without parole, he shocked the courtroom by wearing a T-shirt with “killer” scrawled across his chest, flipping his middle finger at the victims’ families and showing no remorse during a statement.

Parmertor said she was alerted by corrections officials about Lane’s escape and that police came to her home.“I just went into panic mode. I went into a panic attack. I had all these crazy thoughts in my head,” Parmertor said. “I have two other children and a husband. I thought, what does he want to do to my family now?”

Ian Friedman, who was part of Lane’s defense team during the trial, said his former client could now be charged with escape. Another court appearance means he would get the chance to speak again. That would be the fault of Ohio prison officials who inadvertently allowed Lane to flee, Friedman said Friday.

The incident has “put everybody right back into the courtroom,” he told NBC News. “It opens up a wound that hasn’t healed for everyone.”

Lane has reportedly had trouble adjusting to prison life, and his latest stunt will be the subject of a review, officials said. Lane was not being held in a maximum security facility although his prison unit is a “higher security," according to the state’s Correctional Institution Inspection Committee.

BBM  Good question!!

http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/12/justice/ohio-prison-escape/
Union chief: Prison guards issued warning day before T.J. Lane escape
September 12, 2014

(CNN) -- One day before convicted school shooter T.J. Lane jumped a fence and fled an Ohio prison, staff at that prison segregated an inmate and warned officials about an escape plot there, the head of the prison guards' union said Friday.
Christopher Mabe, the president of the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, told CNN the segregated inmate was not T.J. Lane, the 19-year-old who killed three students at a high school cafeteria east of Cleveland in 2012.
Mabe could not say if the segregated inmate was one of the other two prisoners who escaped with Lane from the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution in Lima, Ohio, on Thursday night.
What Mabe did say is that the inmate was segregated Wednesday and that prison staff filed documentation that day about the escape plan. There was no "follow up" from prison officials, the union chief said.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is looking into this report, department spokesman Joellen Smith said Friday.
All three escapees are now back in custody. Lane was found outside a church 100 yards away from the prison shortly after 1 a.m. Friday.
Still, while the manhunt is over, the fact that Lane and the others managed to escape has stirred big questions. Some wonder why Lane wasn't in the maximum-security part of the prison, even though he was serving consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole for the Chardon High School shooting -- an incident for which he's never shown remorse.
"That is something we have to sit down and take a look at," Warden Kevin Jones said

School Shooter T.J. Lane's Prison Time Included Drugs, Segregation
September 16, 2014

Before his failed prison break, Ohio school shooter Thomas “T.J.” Lane racked up a poor record that reflected his trouble adjusting to life behind bars. His 18 months at Allen Correctional Institution were marked by seven violations, including smoking marijuana, self-mutilation and an insolent attitude toward superiors, discipline records released Monday show. Lane was given 10 days in segregation in July 2013 after corrections officers noticed he had three different tattoos on his chest — charging him with self-mutilation.

He’s also accused twice of refusing to carry out assignments while attending classes. “He sits and complains that education makes him ill (and) that he gets migraines because of it,” his records say. The teacher allowed him to stay in class and draw, but Lane would make images of himself with the word “killer” and doodle “kitty cats” over his math assignment.

Lane, 19, had busted out of prison late Thursday scaling a fence with two other inmates before they were all caught, police said. He was transferred from Allen Correctional Institution, a minimum/medium security prison, to Ohio’s only super-maximum prison in Youngstown. After the transfer, officers at his former facility found Lane’s cell had an array of prison contraband, including clothing, 15 books and Pokemon cards. Lane was sentenced in March 2013 for the fatal shooting of three students at Chardon High School — an attack he has never fully explained. On Monday, Allen Correctional added razor wiring along the security fencing and said they implemented other changes.
