‘Hot Dogs Cause Butt Cancer,’ billboard warns Chicago residents of colorectal cancer risk and processed meats Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine sponsor of colorectal cancer awareness sign By Lindsay Goldwert / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS March 13, 2012 The shock docs are at it again. Chicago drivers may be surprised to see a billboard warning them about the link between “butt cancer” and hot dog consumption. The billboard, which was sponsored by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), is attempting to warn residents of the link between nitrites and colorectal cancer. “Colon cancer is a killer, and processed meats get much of the blame,” says Susan Levin, M.S., R.D., nutrition education director for the PCRM. “Many Americans have no idea that eating hot dogs and bacon raises their risk of this deadly disease.” Studies have linked processed meat consumption with increased stroke, cholesterol and cancer risks. Illinois has a high rate of colorectal cancer and is a major consumer and producer of hot dogs. "Hot dogs are part of a healthy, balanced diet," American Meat Institute President J. Patrick Boyle told the Chicago Tribune. "They come in a variety of nutrition and taste formulas and they are an excellent source of protein, vitamins and minerals.
