Devin "Baby Boy" Davis, 2, was reported missing in Liberty County after he reportedly wandered away from his mother Tuesday afternoon.

LIBERTY COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- An Amber Alert has been issued for a two-year-old boy who's been reported missing in Liberty County.
Devin "Baby Boy" Davis was last seen around 3:15pm Tuesday at his home in the Sam Houston Lakes Estate in Cleveland. Davis' mother told authorities she woke up from a nap and discovered he was gone.

Davis has blue eyes and red hair. He is about 30 inches tall and weighs about 40 pounds. He was wearing a gray and burgundy jersey, blue jeans and Spider-Man tennis shoes.

Police fear the child may have wandered off and have been abducted.

The Davis family just moved to the Houston area from Virginia last week, according to our Houston Community Newspaper partner, The Cleveland Advocate.

By VANESA BRASHIER and CASSIE GREGORY

A 2-year-old boy has been reported as missing in the Sam Houston Lake Estates Subdivision in the Tarkington area.
 ::snipping2::
The boy is described as having red hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a grey over burgundy jersey-type shirt that said “Pee Wee,” and blue jeans. Originally it was thought he was wearing his Spiderman tennis shoes, but he may have been barefoot.

He was last seen at around 3 p.m. Tuesday, right before he wandered away from his mother.

The family’s home, located at CR 2901, is approximately 100 feet from a creek.

According to a family friend, the boy, Devon “Baby Boy” Davis, and his family had just moved to the Tarkington area from Virginia on Thursday of last week.

Law enforcement and firefighters are assisting in the search. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and the Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department have set up a command post at the child’s home.
 ::snipping2::
According to Advocate Reporter Cassie Gregory, the mother of the child claims she was napping in her home with Devon's baby sister shortly before Devon disappeared. The doors of the home were reportedly locked.

When she awoke, Devon was missing. When she was unable to find him, law enforcement was called in to help.

UPDATE 2: We've learned more about the parents of the missing Tarkington boy. The father, Mike, and his wife, April, moved their family to the area on Thursday.

Mike is ex-Army Airborne and moved to Liberty County to live with an Army buddy when he couldn't find work in Virginia. He arrived first and then went back for his family once he was settled.

Search underway for missing 2-year-old boy in Liberty County
Quote
The family just moved into the area last week from Virginia. The mother noticed the child was missing yesterday afternoon after she woke up from a nap.

"The mother stated that she laid the kids down for a nap and he disappeared from inside the residence." Capt. Rex Evans with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.

The area in which they are searching for the boy is heavily wooded and has lots of bodies of water that's covered with moss and vegetation.

This doesn't sound good.

Search for Liberty Co. toddler turns to creek
Cindy Horswell
March 28, 2012

After a relentless night-long search, investigators continued trudging through waste-deep water Wednesday in a creek that encircled the home where a 2-year-old red-headed toddler vanished after being put down for a nap in a river community in Liberty County.

Searchers with long poles prodded the depths of the murky water after trained dogs detected Devin Davis' scent along the creek's banks and a small wooden bridge that crosses it. The creek is about 100 feet behind the two-story wood frame house where the boy's family was living after moving to Sam Houston Lake Estates from Virginia a week ago.

Houston police divers were also scouring the water bottom while Texas Equusearch volunteers trolled the area with a boat equipped with sonar.

Aircraft armed with infrared heat detectors have been unable to find any hint of the missing child.
 ::snipping2::
Evans said the mother also found the door to her jeep was ajar, though she said she had left it shut.

So far, despite lots of rumors, Evans said he has no reason to suspect foul play.

However, investigators wearing gloves were seen collecting evidence Wednesday afternoon from the ground near a back window of the house where the child lived.

The child was last seen wearing a red and gray T-shirt and jeans. Initially, authorities thought he was wearing Spiderman tennis shoes but those shoes were located inside the home.

Search continues for missing 2-year-old Liberty County child
By CASSIE GREGORY
March 28, 2012

 ::snipping2::
The house on CR 2901 is a bi-level structure on stilts to keep from flooding, since the property is surrounded on three sides by a horseshoe-shaped creek. A straight, single flight of stairs leads up to the living space on the second level. The yard is roughly an acre, with lots of spaces that could attract an inquisitive 2-year-old. It leads in three directions to thick underbrush and woods along the creek bank. A bridge spans the creek across the driveway from the house.

LCSO Captain Rex Evans said they began the search by first scouring the house inside and out, including the space underneath, with a thermal imaging camera. Determined to be thorough, the process was completed three times while other investigators began a methodical search of the perimeter of the property. Neighbors were contacted and vehicles were searched in case Devon might have been able to get inside a car and become trapped.

It quickly became obvious the search was going to have to be expanded. Evans called for assistance from the Tarkington Volunteer Fire Department, followed closely by calling every fire department in the county. The Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office was contacted to bring their bloodhound and DPS was also asked to send a helicopter with thermal imaging capabilities to search from the air. An Amber Alert was issued in case Devon had been abducted.

Approximately 15 minutes had elapsed since deputies arrived on the scene.

It was originally thought Devon had been wearing shoes, but it turned out the young boy was barefooted.
 ::snipping2::
Following the scent from a pair of the boys’ socks worn earlier in the day, the bloodhound seemed to track a couple of spots near the creek bank, one on the left hand side of the house and one across the bridge from the house.

TVFD’s boat was brought out to begin dragging the creek, but the creek was too narrow and shallow in places for the boat to be launched. Needham Fire Department was called to bring their amphibious ATV unit to search the water. A smaller boat from Cypress Lakes VFD was also launched to aid in the search.
 ::snipping2::
The search continued through the night. Needham Fire Department member Cody Tweedy, outfitted in a wetsuit, stayed in the water for over seven hours, painstakingly sweeping the creek from side to side in what was termed a “zipper search.” Other firefighters stayed as long as they could, eventually sending members home to get rest in case the search would have to be resumed at dawn.

A DPS helicopter came back out at 5 a.m. on Wednesday to perform another sweep of the area with the thermal imaging camera, but to no avail.

Members of Tarkington, Cypress Lakes and HWY 321 VFDs stayed overnight. Evans recalled the other fire departments in the county to resume the ground search shortly before 8 a.m. The county game warden is also on the scene as well as several law enforcement officers and other emergency personnel.

The command post has requested civilians stay clear of the area so as not to impede the organized search.

Donations of water, Gatorade, snacks or other food for searchers is appreciated. The public is asked to drop off donations at the Precinct 2 JP’s office located across the street from the Tarkington fire station on SH 321.

Searchers Look For Missing 2-Year-Old East Texas Boy
Updated 11:55 a.m., March 28, 2012

An Amber Alert was issued for Devin Davis on Tuesday. Liberty County sheriff's deputies said Devin wandered off while his mother and sibling were napping at the family's home in the Sam Houston Lake Estates area near Tarkington about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. She found the door open and the child gone.

The area has thick underbrush and bodies of water. A creek is behind the house.

Detectives said they fear that Devin may have been kidnapped after he wandered off.

"At this time, we have not confirmed whether or not this is an abduction or if it is a lost child, " said Capt. Rex Evans with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.

More than 100 officials and volunteers from Liberty County and the surrounding areas were searching by air and land, and said they would keep searching for the boy around the clock.

The Houston Police dive team and Texas EquuSearch joined the search Wednesday morning.

"Both parents are here, devastated and in a word -- very frantic. We're doing everything we can to find him right now," Evans said. "Every minute counts. Every second counts."

Neighbor of missing Liberty County tot: 'It's a mean river, she'll take a life in a heartbeat'
March 28, 2012

 ::snipping2::
An Amber Alert was issued for Devon after he went missing from his family’s home in the Sam Houston Lakes Estate in Cleveland, Texas, around 3:30 p.m. The family had only lived in the home for about six days.
Devon’s mother said she awoke from a nap to find that he was gone. She immediately called for help and authorities canvassed the area hoping the child had just wandered off. They yelled, called in helicopters and ran seven search dogs around to the point of exhaustion, but there was still no sight of the missing child.
The search was concentrated in the area of FM 2252 and FM 2518.  Texas Equusearch brought in sonar equipment and divers were sent in from the Houston area to lend fresh eyes as they searched the rural terrain surrounding his home.
 ::snipping2::
Deborah Scott, a neighbor, remembers the time a grown man got lost in the area.
“It’s a mean river. She’ll take a life in a heartbeat, she’s taken a lot of them,” Scott said, adding there were other dangers the defenseless child could face.
“We’ve got gators out here, really big gators out here crawling,” Scott said. “And since the drought, the animals are coming back. We have wild hogs out here in these woods and I’m just worried about what’s happened.”
 ::snipping2::
Authorities have already received lots of tips and calls about possible sightings since the boy’s disappearance, but nothing has panned out.
Deputies collected two bags of evidence from behind Devon’s home – clues they hope will lead to a rescue – instead of another river recovery.

KittyMom, if you have time, read through some of the articles again.  From what I gather, I don't think the little boy opened the jeep door, maybe someone else was around the house.  Also, they were checking a back window of the house and etc.  So far, they aren't sure if he wandered off and was then abducted, according to one of the articles below.   I've been trying to piece things together myself with the little bits of information and I just don't know.  I hope he can be found safe and soon!

muffy,
The part about the door of the car being open just jumped out at me from all the other info presented.  I mean, the jeep I used to own had a step part under the door, but even then, a small child couldn't open it.  So, that would lead me to believe that it had to be someone taller than a 2 yr old.  So, then, you wonder...why open the jeep?  Hoping the keys were in it?  Was anything taken from inside the jeep (ex. purse, loose change, ipod)?

And how did a 2 yr old get a bolt lock open?  Did he climb pull a chair up to the door and stand on it?

My son was nicknamed "The Escape Artist" in nursery school.  I never really had any problems with him getting out of the house because we had doors that locked by key from the inside.  (Older home with skeleton keys that we kept above the door frame.)  But he did get out of the nursery room a few times and ran up the hall with the ladies running behind him.  But he made enough noise getting the door open they knew he was making a run for it.  lol

I had one of those escape artists too.  We did the locks with keys from the inside too, and had to screw the aluminum frame windows shut, because at age 18 mo., he unlocked a window, pushed out the screen and went out.  I was maybe 5 feet away just out of eyesight that time.  He was very quick, quiet and impulsive.  I used to take him into the bathroom with me, because I literally couldn't take my eyes off him.  He could climb the front of anything  (book cases,  counter tops, trees) in a heartbeat and was the only escapee in the history of his preschool.  Some kids are a challenge.  ::MonkeyWink::  Fortunately he's a grown man now, but for a long time just keeping him safe was day to day.  And he was able to overcome those child proof locks for cabinets and those little things you stick in electrical outlets.  We had to use outlet covers that rotated.  And gates?  He'd go right over them .  We put channel in the sides of the doorway, and then put a piece of plywood that could be pulled in and out when we wanted to go through.  He couldn't climb up the front of it and he was too short to go over it.  If anything had happened to my boy, it wouldn't have been because we didn't try to keep him safe.  Kids can be pretty amazing at getting out and up.  Maybe little Devin was a smart and active kiddo like ours were.  Or maybe he wasn't sleepy and the person that may have been lurking outside saw him.  I just don't know.  I don't now how Devin's family is holding up.  Just the thought of not knowing where a child is for just a few minutes, let alone one missing like Devin is just strikes such fear in my heart.

Update: Search continues for toddler, outlook bleak
By Cindy Horswell
March 29, 2012

Rescuers are continuing their search for a missing 2-year-old today, but officials said it is unlikely that they find the toddler alive.

Officials have been searching forests, water and fields behind the Sam Houston Lake subdivision where Devon Davis was reported missing on Tuesday afternoon. More than 100 searchers have found no sign of the missing boy over the past two days.

"We hope for a miracle on this case," Texas EquuSearch founder Tim Miller said. "We're hoping he is still alive out there, but we don't sugar coat anything. It doesn't look good."

Devin Davis Missing: Search For 2-Year-Old Texas Boy Now A 'Recovery' Effort
March 29, 2012

More than 100 people are out searching Thursday for Devin Davis, a missing 2-year-old boy from Cleveland, Texas, who is believed to have wandered out of his home Tuesday. The search, however, is likely a recovery mission, according to a missing-person search-and-recovery group that is assisting law enforcement.

"You always keep the hope, but I think everyone understands at this point in time we are more in a recovery mode than a rescue mode," Ken DeFoor, a search coordinator with Texas EquuSearch, told The Huffington Post.

In addition to Texas EquuSearch, multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency services workers are out searching for Davis.

Your son sounds a lot like mine!  My boy's first word was 'down' and he went from crawling to running.  The climbing thing was a challenge for us too.  I learned that just putting things up high wasn't enough.  My baby would find things (toys, stepstool, chairs) to stack and climb on top of to reach items. I tried everything to keep the cabinet doors closed.  I finally just cleaned out one side and told him that it was his 'special' place and put some pots and pans in.  He loved getting in there and playing.  lol

If this family had only been there since last week, they may've come to the notice of a person up to no good.  If the younger baby is a newborn, mom may've been exhausted and someone knowing that called the child to the door/window.  I wonder if anyone close by had shown an interest in Devin?

Search Expanded for Missing 2-Year-Old Boy

March 29, 2012

CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) - The effort to find a missing 2-year-old boy appears to be shifting from a search mission to a recovery mission.

Crews  were searching Thursday for Devin Davis, who was reported missing around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when an Amber Alert was issued.

Dive teams with the Houston Police Department were deployed Wednesday and returned Thursday to assist in the search.
 ::snipping2::
The Liberty County Sheriff's Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, area fire departments and Texas EquuSearch are taking part in the search effort.

"It's gonna take a lot of time and everybody's doing everything right. Now we jsut need a little bit of luck to along with this, so hope today's our lucky day," said Tim Miller, founder of Texas EquuSearch.

"It's heartbreaking for everybody here; not only for the family but for the investigators, for the searchers, everybody involved. It's a very difficult transition to make and it's again heartbreaking for us all," said Capt. Rex Evans with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.

I wonder if the poor little guy woke up and with this being a new home was scared in an unfamiliar place and tried to find where mommy might be?

And while authorities maintain they don’t suspect foul play, the fact that they are looking in places a two-year-old couldn’t possibly walk to means they are literally leaving no stone unturned in this case.

CLEVELAND, Texas - "If you know anything, if you've seen anything, please just call somebody! Bring him home, he needs to be at home with his family," said the mother of a 2-year-old boy who was reported missing Tuesday from his home in Cleveland, Texas.

April Davis issued the statement Friday morning in tears to FOX 26 News and several other media outlets at the command center where searchers gathered to find her son, Devin Davis.

"Please help me find my son. He's just a little boy. He's just getting over a pneumonia. He might be sick," added a crying April.

April agreed to speak to the media upon the condition of not answering any questions.

"I need my son, I need to know, I need some answers and someone has to know something, somewhere out there!," begged April. "If you're scared, I understarnd. There's a lot of stuff going on. Do the right thing!"

Toddler search now a recovery, no longer a rescue

Searchers have been looking for 2-year-old Devon Davis, whose mother said was last seen Tuesday afternoon. Officials shifted their search Thursday from rescuing the toddler to finding his body after officials said the chances of finding him appear slim.
 ::snipping2::
By nightfall Thursday -- and despite some four dozen dogs trained to detect the scent of a dead body -- no sign of Devon was found within a mile of the two-story frame house east of Cleveland, near the Tarkington Prairie community, where his family was living.
 ::snipping2::
April Davis said she put Devon down for a nap with his 1-year-old sister about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. She told authorities that she, too, had dozed off after bolting the front door. But 25 minutes later, she said, she awoke to find the door wide open and her son, wearing jeans but barefoot, gone.

She also said the doors to her Jeep, which had been closed, were ajar, and the upstairs window where the children had been sleeping had been left open, Evans said.

Texas Rangers had marked a half-dozen spots on the ground below the window and, wearing blue rubber gloves, collected specimens from the ground and sealed them in bags. Evans declined to identify the material: "We're not letting that out now."

 ::snipping2::
FBI investigators, using personality profilers, re-interviewed April Davis on Thursday. Technicians also processed the house in search of clues to the disappearance.

"Still, right now," said Evans, "we have no idea where he is."

Mother asks searchers to not give up hope on finding missing toddler

 ::snipping2::
Following up on a report from a neighbor that April had lost custody of an older child when the family was living in Virginia, during the press conference on Friday, the Advocate asked April to explain the circumstances of that situation, but she turned and walked away, refusing to answer.

Sources in the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, which is overseeing the investigation into Devin’s disappearance, are not saying that April or her husband, Mike, are suspects. April submitted to a voluntary polygraph test, but some reports suggest she failed a portion of it. The sheriff’s office would not confirm that.

“We are not ruling out foul play at this time,” said Liberty County Sheriff’s Captain Rex Evans.

With no sign of the missing child, the search has now changed from a rescue mission to a recovery effort, according to Evans.

“I don’t believe there is any other way to put that. Yesterday was the worst day of my law enforcement career, having to sit down with the mother and father to tell them that,” said Evans.
 ::snipping2::
If Devin actually walked away from the home, as it has been suggested, there is very little chance he could have survived for a few hours let alone several days.

“We have seen a lot of thick forestation, creeks, dangerous terrain, not to mention the alligators, snakes, feral hogs and large cats that have been spotted by search teams,” said Evans. “There is a lot of territory out here that is still very wild. I think it almost explains why we aren’t able to find the bodies of other missing people. The bodies are not recovered because of the wildlife out here. There are very large animals here.”

The sheriff’s office has expanded the search to a 1.5-mile radius of the home. The searches up and down the creek that takes in three sides of the Davis home have been more extensive — and more perilous for the search teams.

Devon's parents avoided the media Thursday, but could be seen talking to a couple of ministers.

The family moved here to live temporarily in a home owned by one of Mike Davis' friends from the Army. The friend helped him get a welding job, and the two men were working in Louisiana when the boy vanished.

The video explains there have been searches for missing persons 3 times in the past six weeks, and the one thing in common is no one has been found.(Also in common is they are in Liberty County, imo)  The three include Mark Rhineberger, who may have militia ties, Dennis Rogers who became lost and called for help on his cell phone and of course, little Devin Davis.  Captain Rex Evans reports he's needed to redirect all search efforts in the past few days to the search for Devin.

Liberty County boy’s body found in pond near home
March 31, 2012

A drone aircraft operated by volunteers from Texas Equusearch on Saturday located what is believed to be the body of missing 2-year-old Devon Davis floating in an algae-covered pond about 300-yards from his parents’ home in Cleveland.

The search for the red-headed toddler has been discontinued for the time being, said Texas Equusearch coordinator Ken DeFoor.

“Texas Equusearch has been asked to step down as the investigation has reached a possible conclusion,” DeFoor said. “Our searchers are very exhausted. It’s hot out here, these woods are thick, they’ve been going since Wednesday morning all day long, and it’s very taxing, but we’re very relieved that there’s a conclusion to the search. It’s a bad conclusion but it’s a conclusion at least.”

Texas Equusearch launched the drone about 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, the first day that weather permitted, DeFoor said.

From an altitude of 400 feet, the drone’s digital camera picked up a red shirt worn by the boy, who appeared to be floating in the southwest corner of the pond, he said.

“Once we got the photographs from the airplane back to the outpost, we reviewed the images and you could see a red color that looked out of place,” DeFoor said.

A helicopter flew over to confirm, and now law enforcement are in the process of retrieving the body, he said.

Authorities announced at a press conference Saturday that they will proceed with a criminal investigation of the case, KTRK reported.

The FBI has questioned the boy’s mother, April Davis, who was alone with Devon and her one-year-old that afternoon, the Houston Chronicle reported Friday. They have also collected specimens from around their house.

Davis was given a polygraph test and a law enforcement source said she failed part of it. However, Liberty County Sheriff’s spokesman Rex Evans has not discussed the test results or other elements of the investigation publicly.

300 yards seems rather close to the home to not have been searched prior to this.  If this was going to have a tragic ending, why couldn't it have been accidental.  Another sweet baby needlessly gone.

I believe they are going forward with criminal investigation because some of the evidense/information that turned up in the case are sketchy. The mom did fail part of the polygraph test and according to the initial accounts all the doors were locked in the home when Devon supposedly got out and wandered off.

I think the police are covering all bases and want to m,ake sure the timeline fits and the stories add up.

Two sources close to the search and investigation told KPRC Local 2 Friday that Davis failed parts of a polygraph test. The sources declined to elaborate on which parts where failed. They stressed that does not mean anything nefarious happened and polygraphs can be imperfect, especially since Davis is in a very emotional state.

Texas EquuSearch has used sonar devices to look for Devon.
The problem with doing the sonar is there's just so much debris underneath the water," Miller said. "You get a false image and you have to go back over it two or three times to determine what it is."

Body of missing toddler Devin Davis, 2, is found floating in a pond

The body of a two-year-old boy who went missing on Tuesday has been found floating in a pond in Texas.

Devin Davis was reported missing in the south-east of the state after his mother awoke from a nap and he was gone.

The search ended yesterday morning when his body was spotted by an unmanned aircraft about 300 yards from his home.

Liberty County Sheriff’s spokesman Rex Evans told local media the death 'appears accidental'.

 ::snipping2::
The toddler was found dead after a drone aircraft operated by volunteer search group Texas EquuSearch picked up his red shirt floating in the algae-covered water.
According to local ABC station KTRK, a search party of more than 100 officials and volunteers, including the Houston Police dive team and EquuSearch, were involved in the search.

The Houston Chronicle reported that, although they had searched the pond before, plants on the surface stopped them from spotting Devin's body.

The search effort was commendable, IMO.  They began immediately, and did not stop for days even working through the night.  Thank the Lord for Texas Equisearch and all LE and volunteers who took part.

I lean toward the boy having wandered off.  If mom failed the poly my hunch is she lied about bolting the door to the house out of embarrassment for not having done so, or sleeping much longer than she stated to police and the media.

Sweet little baby made it pretty far before encountering the pond... 300 yards through thick brush and past a creek.  Poor little guy.

Liberty County toddler’s death ruled accidental drowning
April 2, 2012

The death of the 2-year-old Liberty County boy found in a pond  last week was ruled an accidental drowning, officials said. Visitation and funeral services for the child will be held at the end of the week.

The body of Devon Davis was found Saturday after four days of searching the woods and bayous of Liberty County.  An autopsy showed that the child drowned to death, according to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office.  The toxicology results are pending.

Capt. Rex Evans with Liberty County Sheriff’s office said the visitation service will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Neal Funeral Home in Cleveland on Washington St. The service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cornerstone Baptist Church on Highway 105 between Cleveland and Conroe.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s office, Texas Rangers, Texas Equusearch and other volunteers who helped in the search will attend the visitation, Evans said.

Davis was found in a pond that had been searched before this weekend, but plants covering the surface kept the boy’s body from view, officials said.

03/31/12 — It is with extremely heavy hearts that we have to report that little Devin Davis’ body was located today in lake near his home. Please keep Devin’s families and friends in your prayers during their time of grief. We want to thank all of the people from all the different agencies, along with our members who searched in very treacherous conditions to find Devin and bring him home. We want to extend a very special thank you to Gene Robinson, a long time volunteer of Texas EquuSearch for traveling from Central Texas to bring out his drone airplane, which was invaluable in helping bring this family some closure. Additionally, please keep all of the searchers in your prayers too, as this was a very emotional search for everyone involved. We would also like to thank all of the people who brought food, water and bug spray out to the search site. Those donations were very much appreciated by everyone who was out looking for Devin. We will post funeral arrangements when they become available.

Oh my gosh.   I have seen the little angel's name spelled "Devin" the majority of time, and occasionally "Devon".  With his obituary spelling "Devon", I wonder if this is correct?  If the header and subject lines are in error due to the initial article, I'll go back and edit them to the correct spelling in the morning, since it's after midnight now.  It's important for his name to be correct. It will take some time, but we'll make it right.  ::MonkeyAngel::

You'll see an edit mark in each post as I change the subject line.  MB

Funeral service held for 2-year-old Devon Davis
April 6, 2012

A funeral service was held for 2-year-old Devon Davis at Cornerstone Church of Cleveland on Friday, April 6.

The little boy’s casket rode atop Cleveland Fire Department’s Engine 41 from Neal Funeral Home to the church at 12:30 p.m., escorted by other fire trucks and emergency vehicles.

Family members, including Devon’s parents, Mike and April Davis, followed Engine 41 in a black limousine.

The procession was greeted by well-wishers all along the route to the church. As it passed Walmart, a flurry of white balloons were released in a touching tribute to the young toddler.
 ::snipping2::
His funeral was attended by a multitude of law enforcement officers, and other emergency personnel who helped with the search, as well as friends, neighbors, and other community members.

Texas Rangers who helped in the search served as Devon’s pallbearers.

Liberty County Sheriff’s Captain Rex Evans spoke at the funeral, thanking all of the workers again for “pouring their hearts out,” and reminding the family that storms come in life, but after the storm is over, the sun does come out again and life continues.

“Just because the service will end today, the people in this room will not just simply walk away,” Evans told the Davis family. “We will be here for you so long as you need us. God bless you.”

EquuSearch founder Tim Miller echoed the same sentiment and spoke about a conversation he had with Devon’s mom, April, while the search was still ongoing.

Parents of Drowned Toddler Snatch Daughter, Flee

LIBERTY COUNTY – The parents of 2-year-old drowning victim Devon Davis are finding themselves in another precarious position tonight. Officials say early Tuesday evening, Michael and April Davis barged into the home where Child Protective Services placed their 1-year-old daughter, grabbed the little girl and fled. A subsequent check of their last known residence, where Devon drowned, revealed they had packed up all their belongings prior to snatching Abbygail.
 ::snipping2::
The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation and soon learned there was never actually a court order in effect to enforcement placing the child with the foster family. Therefore, no Amber Alert could be issued and it does not appear a crime was committed.

LCSO located the family in the Woodville area around 9 p.m. and found the toddler unharmed.

That's the way I read it.  But I don't understand if the child was taken before or after little Devon was determined to have drown accidentally.  Either way, why wasn't she given back to her parents after Devon's situation was resolved?  It almost sounds like one of those cases where CPS took their sweet time reuniting a family.

Drowned Liberty Co. boy's parents take baby, leave
May 9, 2012

 ::snipping2::
CPS Spokeswoman Gwen Carter says Mike and April Davis on Tuesday broke an agreement with the agency by taking their 18-month-old daughter, Abbygail, during a supervised visit at the home of a family friend, with whom the girl had been staying.

The family friend, Evelyn Johnson, says the parents loaded the baby into their SUV and took off as she was cooking dinner.

"So when I checked, some of the baby's clothes were missing and I looked outside and here was Mike. He had the baby in his arms and then mama was at the car," Johnson said. "So mama went over there and got the baby, threw her into the car and took off."

Liberty County Sheriff's Office Capt. Rex Evans said he was able to get into contact with the Davises and had them pull over in the town of Woodville, which is about 35 miles east of their home. But because CPS does not have custody of Abbygail and her parents did not commit any crime, no Amber Alert could be issued and officers could not detain the parents. However, officers did conduct a welfare check on the parents and the baby before allowing them to continue on, possibly headed back home to Virginia.
 ::snipping2::
But after Devon's drowning incident, the Davises met with CPS in a family team meeting, and together, they determined the couple needed some services in order to properly care for baby Abbygail. That's when CPS and the parents entered into what's called the Child Safety Plan. The agreement essentially states the Davises would let their daughter stay with a family friend until they got the help they needed and CPS approved their living conditions.

Capt. Evans says it's now up to CPS to decide if they want to investigation. They agency has not yet said what, if any, steps will be taken to get the Davises to return Abbygail.

Thanks Muffy for the articles.  Ya know Mom could have been charged easily with neglect and I'm not picking on them but why not take all the help they can get at the moment.  It says the State doesn't have custody but if they don't follow the agreement they could easily take it if they don't follow the plan.  I really understand them losing a child and just wanting to be close to this one but goodness don't just snatch the child!

It's really sad.  I don't believe just taking the little one and going was a good decision, especially since it could really work against them.  The parents must really feel torn and broken-hearted with the loss of little Devon and not having their little girl too.  I don't have all the information, and having your two year old staying with family friends might be a better alternative than having CPS take custody.  Maybe the parents felt things weren't going to go their way, I don't  know.  I hope wherever the parent and their little girl are, they get some help with their grief of losing Devon, help and some support in raising little sister.  I don't know what resources may be available to them, whether it's from family, friends, community etc., I hope they can trust enough for the sake of their daughter.  JMHO
