The FBI interviewed dozens of people after George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin, but none mentioned thinking the killing was racially motivated, according to evidence released on Thursday.

Hundreds of pages of documents (http://Hundreds of pages of documents), including FBI interviews with Zimmerman's friends, co-workers and neighbors, were made public Thursday in the Florida murder case against the now-infamous neighborhood watch volunteer.

Zimmerman fatally shot Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old, in late February. Zimmerman, 28, maintains he feared for his life and shot Martin in self-defense under Florida's "stand your ground law." Sanford, Fla. police did not immediately charge Zimmerman, prompting protests and demands for a federal civil rights investigation.
 
In addition to those close to Zimmerman, the FBI also questioned Sanford detectives working the case, including lead investigator Chris Serino.

"Serino believed that Zimmerman's actions were not based on Martin's skin color rather based on his attire, the total circumstances of the encounter and the previous burglary suspects in the community," according to the FBI's notes.

Serino and other officers told the FBI that a local gang, referred to in the Sanford community as "Goons," were known to dress in black hoodies. Martin was wearing a black hoody the night of his deadly encounter with Zimmerman.
 
"Serino described Zimmerman as overzealous and as having a "little hero complex," but not as a racist," the FBI wrote.

The FBI interviews released on Thursday were part of a mound of pretrial discovery records made public by Special Prosecutor Angela Corey.
 
The new evidence also sheds more light on Zimmerman's actions in the weeks after the shooting. According to the documents, an employee of a West Palm Beach gun store contacted the FBI in late March to report Zimmerman had called two weeks earlier to say, "his life is in danger and he needs more guns."
 
Other documents show that Zimmerman had a knife, a pistol and three clips loaded with ammunition in his rental car when he turned himself into the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on April 11, the day Corey announced Zimmerman was being charged with second-degree murder.

George Zimmerman Sues NBC

On Thursday, December 6, 2012, George Zimmerman filed a legal complaint against NBCUniversal Media, LLC and three individuals who were employed by NBCUniversal Media, LLC, Inc. during the time relevant to the complaint: Ron Allen, Lilia Rodriguez Luciano, and Jeff Burnside. The 24-page complaint alleges “NBC News saw the death of Trayvon Martin not as a tragedy but as an opportunity to increase ratings, and so set about to create the myth that George Zimmerman was a racist and predatory villain.” The complaint, filed in Seminole County, demands a trial by jury, and demands damages sufficient to invoke the jurisdiction of the Circuit Court.

Zimmerman Defense Waives January 8 Hearing
on 02 January 2013.

On October 12, 2012, the Zimmerman defense filed a Motion to Schedule Standing Hearings to Address Discovery and Other Case Management Issues. In response to our motion, the Judge has pre-scheduled a number of hearings that can be used if the defense or the state has motions to bring before the court. The next pre-scheduled hearing was set for January 8; however, the defense and the state have agreed that there are currently no matters that can be appropriately addressed by the Court on that date, so we have chosen to waive the January 8 hearing. The next hearing is scheduled for February 5, and we anticipate there will be new motions put before the court in advance of that hearing date.

UPDATE 1/3/2013: Because the defense has waived the January 8 hearing, the Court has issued an Order Continuing Docket Sounding to February 5, 2013 and Cancelling January 8, 2013 Docket Sounding.

Zimmerman Defense Receives Trayvon Martin’s School Records
 on 16 January 2013.

The Zimmerman defense received the school records of Trayvon Martin, as ordered by Judge Nelson. When we asked the Court to issue Subpoenas Duces Tecum for the school records, the State objected, and Mr. Crump, on behalf of the Martin family, registered a public objection. They argued, in part, that George Zimmerman did not know Trayvon Martin before the night of February 26, 2012, and so the nature of Trayvon’s character as revealed in the school records is irrelevant to the case at hand.

The Judge ruled that the defense should have the records. This ruling was based, in large part, on a case called State v. Munoz, 45 So 3d 954 (3 DCA 2010). That case holds that, under the right circumstances, a person's reputation for violence may be admissible in a case, even if the person accused of the crime was unaware of the reputation. The case focuses on the issue of the whether the person with the reputation may have acted aggressively in this case.

As we approach a Self-Defense Immunity Hearing and/or a jury trial, there will be necessary scrutiny of Trayvon Martin. As it is true for any person who undergoes such scrutiny, facts may come out that could be seen to show him in a less than favorable light. We do, for instance, have an interest in presenting Trayvon Martin accurately as he appeared on the night of February 26, 2012, and that will include challenging the several-years-old photo of Trayvon Martin as a boy wearing a red shirt -- the photo that has become the popular representation of him in the minds of the public at large. If the memory of Trayvon Martin is going to be a catalyst for a conversation about race relations in America, then we should have an honest conversation.

With Respect to the State's Response to Defendant's Motion for Sanctions Against State Attorney's Office for Discovery Violations

The STATE'S RESPONSE TO DEFENDANT'S MOTION FOR SANCTIONS AGAINST STATE ATTORNEY'S OFFICE FOR DISCOVERY VIOLATIONS, while pointed, has little substance that addresses the very serious motion we have before the Court.

From a legal perspective, the Zimmerman case is about whether George Zimmerman acted in self-defense, but we understand that the case has also become important to the national conversation about race relations, about gun control, and about “Stand Your Ground” laws. Although the Court will not be able to resolve these larger issues, we as the defense team, have chosen to engage in the national conversation in a responsible and respectful way.

George Zimmerman was arrested under an extraordinary set of circumstances, and he is being prosecuted under similar circumstances. As we prepare for a jury trial in June, we have real concerns about George’s ability to receive a fair trial. The DEFENDANT'S MOTION FOR SANCTIONS AGAINST STATE ATTORNEY'S OFFICE FOR DISCOVERY VIOLATIONS is not a frivolous attack on the prosecution, it is a serious attempt to seek remedy for discovery violations that have a substantial impact on our ability to defend George.

What is at stake is George Zimmerman’s right to a fair trial, and in a broader sense, what is at stake is the sanctity of the criminal justice system and its ability to function properly under the incredible public and political pressures that have been placed upon it.
