Sister: 'Out of character' for Bragg soldier to go missing

Fayetteville, N.C. — Fayetteville police said Tuesday they are searching for a missing Fort Bragg soldier who was last seen leaving a bar early Saturday.

Fort Bragg officials reported Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux, 23, missing on Monday after she didn't show up for duty.

"During the early course of the investigation, there was some information that detectives received that leads us to believe she may be in danger," said police spokesman Gavin MacRoberts.

Her family members traveled from Florida Tuesday to assist investigators in the search.

Bordeaux's older sister, Olivia Cox, said it was out of character for her sister not to show up for work.

"Kelli is a good soldier. Kelli is not a soldier who would go AWOL," Cox said.

Cox declined to comment on whether Bordeaux was with her husband, Mike, the night she was last seen, but did say he was "holding up the best he can."

FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Authorities are searching for a 23-year-old Fort Bragg soldier who has not been seen since April 14.

Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department are trying to locate Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux.

She was last seen leaving Froggy Bottoms bar in the 6300 block of Ramsey Street around 1:20 a.m.

Fort Bragg officials reported Bordeaux missing to Fayetteville police on Monday.

Bordeaux, who is a combat medic, is described as standing 5' 1" tall and weighing 102 pounds. She has blond hair and brown eyes. The soldier was reportedly last seen wearing a pink tube top with spaghetti straps and black shorts.

Tuesday evening, Bordeaux's sister held an emotional news conference in front of the Fayetteville Police Department.

"Being a soldier to Kelly isn't something she'd jeopardize for anything," said Bordeaux's sister, Olivia Cox. "Missing work isn't something that's in character for Kelli. This is an out of character thing to happen to my sister."

Bordeaux was last spotted leaving a bar, Froggy Bottoms, in nearby Fayetteville about 1:30 am on Saturday. A bar employee gave her a ride home, but he is not considered a suspect, a military official told NBC.

Bordeaux, a health services specialist originally from St. Cloud in Central Florida, has been married for two years but is estranged from her husband, Mike, the official said.

“Supposedly when the guy that was giving her a ride home, was taking her to her apartment, he got to her apartment and something spooked her so … she said, 'No, no, no just let me out here,' instead of taking her like around the corner to her apartment,” her mother, Johnna Henson, told wptv.com. “I don’t understand that.”   ::snipping2::

Dive team searches pond in missing soldier case
April 19, 2012

A lead in the case of Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux led to the deployment of a dive team in nearby Eastover, said spokesman Gavin MacRoberts of the Fayetteville Police Department. Eastover is northeast of Fayetteville, in Cumberland County.

Police and the military searched an area near a Fayetteville bar where Bordeaux was last seen and last used her cell phone, authorities said.

The soldier, 23, left the Froggy Bottoms bar early Saturday, police have said. The GI had been drinking and was given a ride home by a bar employee, according to a U.S. Army official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

At some point, the Army official said, Bordeaux sent two text messages. One said, "got home safely." The official did not know who the text was sent to or the contents of the second text message.

The area to be searched is near the bar and Interstate 295, Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine told reporters Wednesday. Records showed Bordeaux's cell phone "pinging" off a tower nearby early Saturday, he said.
 ::snipping2::
Police were tight-lipped on the investigation, with Bergamine refusing to comment on several questions, including one about the text messages. On whether Bordeaux is believed to be a random victim, Bergamine would say only that the case is classified as a missing-persons case, and "there is a lot that is not known."

The Army official said police searched Bordeaux's apartment and vehicle, but did not know where the vehicle was found. Bordeaux was reported missing Monday when she failed to report for duty, the official said.
 ::snipping2::
Bordeaux's mother, Johnna Henson, said she had been told by police that an individual gave her daughter a ride to the bar, where she took part in karaoke. Henson told HLN's Jane Velez-Mitchell that her daughter was "spooked" while someone was driving her home, and that Bordeaux reportedly told the driver to let her out before she reached the apartment. She said she does not believe her daughter arrived home.

Kelli Bordeaux Search: Person of Interest Denies Involvement, Quesitoned Twice by Police
April 18, 2012

A 25-year-old bar hand who is a registered sex offender has been questioned twice by police in connection with the disappearance of a missing soldier and has been called a person of interest.

Kelli Bordeaux, 23, was last seen leaving Froggy Bottoms bar in Fayetteville, N.C., around 1:20 a.m Saturday.

Nicholas Holbert, 25, told ABC News 11 exclusively that he gave the soldier a ride home from the bar, where he works, but denied having anything to do with her disappearance and said he dropped her off at the entrance of her neighborhood at her request.

"As soon as you drive into the entrance to Meadowbrook, she said stop right here," Holbert said. "So I stopped and she said, 'I'll walk home.' I said, 'Are you sure?' She said, 'Yeah.' I said I figured she didn't want me to know where she lived, or somebody was there and she didn't want to be seen together."

The bar hand, who lives in a lean-to behind Froggy Bottoms, was questioned for a second time today by Fayetteville Police. He said he believed he was being targeted because he has a criminal record.

Holbert is a registered sex offender and was convicted as a 16-year-old of indecent liberties with a 5-year-old child, ABC 11 reported.

The last ping from Bordeaux's cell phone came late Friday or early Saturday off a tower off the Ramsey Street corridor, the area police plan to scour for clues, Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine said.

Fayetteville Police spokesman Gavin MacRoberts said there is reason to believe the soldier is in danger.

"There is some information we've gathered that makes us concerned for her safety," he said, declining to go into more detail, citing the ongoing investigation.

The missing soldier, who is from St. Cloud, Fla., has been married to her husband, Mike Bordeaux, who is a civilian, for nearly two years. He was in Florida at the time of his wife's disappearance visiting his father, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

UPDATE I: Police question person of interest in search for missing Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux. Oh yeah, as originally reported that the indovidual who drove Kelli Bordeaux home was not a suspect or POI, wrong. As it turns out, 25 year old Nicholas Holbert, the man who drove her home is a registered sex offender. Holbert was convicted in 2003 of indecent liberties with a 5-year-old child. NICE.

North Carolina police are questioning a registered sex offender and bar hand in their search for a missing Fort Bragg soldier last seen leaving a nightclub.

Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux, a 23-year-old combat medic with the 44th Medical Brigade, disappeared early Saturday after leaving the Froggy Bottoms bar in Fayetteville.

On Wednesday, authorities interviewed 25-year-old Nicholas Holbert, a registered sex offender who works at the bar and who said he drove Bordeaux home the night she disappeared

Who didn't have red flags going up when the guy who drove her home was the last one to see her? Great, sex offender to boot. Not looking good at all.

Police call off pond search for Fort Bragg soldier

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police on Thursday called off their search of a two-acre pond for a missing Fort Bragg soldier who's been missing since Saturday.

Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux, 23, of St. Cloud, Fla., was last seen around 1:20 a.m. April 14 leaving a bar on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville called Froggy Bottoms.

Officials at Fort Bragg reported her missing to Fayetteville police Monday when she didn't show up for duty.

A dive team began searching the pond – 8 miles from the bar – on Dobbins Holmes Road in Eastover, Wednesday afternoon after receiving a tip.

They resumed their search Thursday morning, saying it was the only search they had at the time.

It was called off by Thursday afternoon. Police won't say whether they found anything.

Daniel West, whose family owns property around the pond, said K-9 officers were also searching the area.

"There was a point in that area out there that the dogs were reacting to," West said. A dog from a second K-9 team also reacted to the same area, he said.

Police, however, won't confirm those details.

Police: No new leads in search for missing soldier

FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Police said dive teams found no evidence in a pond off Dobbin Holmes Road Thursday in the search for missing Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux. Police said they are almost back to square one in the investigation.

The pond was several miles from the Froggy Bottoms bar where Bordeaux was last seen early Saturday morning.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Fayetteville Police Chief Tom Bergamine said investigators do not have one solid piece of evidence into Bordeaux's disappearance.

Bergamine said they have received numerous tips on a special hotline. People with information are asked to call (910) 433-1114.

 ::snipping2::

Bergamine said Wednesday that investigators have confirmed that Bordeaux's husband of two years was out of town when she disappeared.

 ::snipping2::

Holbert helps out at Froggy Bottoms and lives in a lean-to behind the building. He said he first met the woman earlier this year.

"She came into Froggy Bottoms a couple of weeks ago with a friend - male friend - and they was drinking and playing pool. And I asked if I could get next on the pool game. They said yes and that's how I met them, playing pool at the bar," said Holbert.

Holbert said he didn't know Bordeaux was married until police told him.

"I asked her if she was single, and she said 'Well, it's complicated,'" said Holbert.

Holbert said the only thing he's guilty of is making a friend. He maintained Bordeaux asked him to bring her to Froggy Bottoms Friday night where he helps tend the bar. He said something unusual happened when he drove her back to her home.

"Around one, one-thirty, she told me 'I'm tired. I want to go home.' I said 'Okay,' so we got in the car and as soon as I pulled into Meadowbrook, she said 'You stop right here and let me out. I'll walk,'" said Holbert

The spot Holbert said he dropped off Bordeaux is about a quarter mile from her apartment on Water Trail Drive. He told ABC11 he figured there might be someone at the apartment she didn't want him to see, so he left.

Holbert said while Bordeaux was at the bar, she spent a lot of time on her cell phone.

"I don't think she called anybody, but she was texting at her phone all night to somebody," he said.

Holbert said he had nothing to do with the soldier's disappearance and wishes he could talk to her family.

"I'd just tell them, I'd tell them I'm grieving too. She seemed like a really nice and cool person. And I hate that she's missing and hope that she is found for their shake so they can get closure," he offered.

 ::snipping2::

He spoke again with ABC11 Thursday after his second round of police questioning. He said one thing investigators asked him to do shocked him.

"He said 'Look in that camera and state if I killed Kelli Bordeaux then I deserve to die,'" said Holbert.

"You did that?" asked ABC11's Gilbert Baez.

"I did that," Holbert said.

"Did you kill her?" asked Baez.

"I did not," said Holbert.

"Did you have anything to do with her disappearance?" asked Baez.

"I had nothing to do it. I picked her up and took her home. That's it," said Holbert.

At his news conference Thursday evening, Chief Bergamine said there were no immediate plans to call Holbert in for a third round of questioning.

Nicholas Holbert, 25, said police told him why they were looking for her at the pond.

“The investigators told me that they found a white plastic bag with khaki shorts and a T-shirt in it with blood on it,” Holbert said.  “And he asked me if it was going to come back as mine. I told him, 'No.’”

Investigators are not calling Holbert a suspect

Man last seen with missing soldier arrested on unrelated charges
By: Jake Seaton | NBC17.com
April 20, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --

A man who gave a Fort Bragg soldier a ride home from a Fayetteville bar before she was reported missing has turned himself in to authorities.

Nicholas Holbert, who lived in a tent behind the Froggy Bottoms bar, turned himself in to authorities Friday afternoon on charges unrelated to the disappearance of Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux.

Holbert, who is a registered sex offender, was arrested for violation of his sex offender status, which requires him to provide a new address within 10 days of moving.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says Holbert is in custody for "failure to register his new residence."

The tent where Holbert lived is no longer behind the bar, but Fayetteville Police Chief Thomas Bergamine would not say if it had been confiscated for evidence.
 ::snipping2::
Bordeaux, 23, has been missing since early Saturday morning, when she was last seen at the Froggy Bottoms bar. The bar's owner -- who would not give his name -- said Bordeaux was at the bar with Holbert.

The bar owner said a tab for $28 from Friday night was attributed to Holbert and Bordeaux, although he said Holbert does not drink. The tab was $28 for four shots and four beers.
 ::snipping2::
On Friday, Matt Henson, Bordeaux's brother, held a news conference appealing for help to find his sister. Henson said the family is hoping this is a hostage situation and that Bordeaux is still alive.
 ::snipping2::
Asked if the search was "back to square one," Bergamine said, "That's about the gist of it."
 ::snipping2::
Police have question Holbert twice in relation to Bordeaux's disappearance, though they have not said he is a person of interest in the investigation.

Well it's nothing new as far as the Blink blogs. These things have already been reported in the press.

My best friend for 30 years lives in Fayetteville, NC and is very familiar with the area that Kelli went missing. Her daughter, who is 23 has been to that bar.

She told me that the pond they are searching is very difficult to get into.

Some links she sent me:

There is more but I just posted these two.

She also told me that it wasn't a tent that he lived in. It was a make shift building. Basically a shack that he built.

I'm just going by what her and her daughter told me. I don't live there but they do.

sassifrass-

In my first piece,  I referred to Holbert's "living arrangements" as a lean to.  In the second,  I referred to it as a tent because I have seen actual images of it both before it's removal and after.

These images are case sensitive evidence and will not be published.  I can assure you there was no shack or structure.

At the risk of sounding defensive,  I was offended for my team at your "nothing new" comment.

Anyone following this case can look at publication dates and content and see in this case, we were able to present data that had not been previously published and some still has not been elsewhere.

In fact, my office received calls from the 2 major local media outlets covering Kelli's case yesterday afternoon.

One of which you posted links to, and are hyperlinked in the piece already, had you actually read them.

Additionally, as I predicted was in process in the first piece, Holbert was arrested yesterday on the violation of registration requirements.

I note that your only post on this thread comes after Klaas kindly posted links to the BOC articles.

Advocacy does not include avarice.

This is not your virtual water cooler to make victims in horrific situations about you.

I am being extremely generous by not posting specifics about your actions in other cases.

This case is about a missing soldier who deserves to be found, followed by committed advocates and contributors and I have seen where negativity has resulted in monkeys discontinuing reading and posting where that occurs.

I would refer you to your own recent comments about working together and "team missing".

Volunteers, dogs join search for missing soldier

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A volunteer search-and-rescue team joined the search Saturday for a Fort Bragg soldier missing more than a week after she was last seen at a Fayetteville bar.

Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux was last seen early on April 14 leaving Froggy Bottoms on Ramsey Street in Fayetteville. Officials at Fort Bragg reported her missing to Fayetteville police two days later when she didn't show up for duty.

Since then, police have questioned those who might have seen her at the bar, and her family has made several pleas for information through the media. Both efforts continued Saturday.

Volunteers began the day at Bordeaux's apartment and searched, using cadaver dogs, many of the locations already covered by the Fayetteville Police Department.

Steven Cantrell, is not listed on any business paperwork or licenses I could find for either Poindexter Saloon or Froggy Bottoms.

He definitely lives at Mandy Murphy's address.

My sources are telling me that Cantrell is still being interviewed since this morning and has not been jailed.

These are private clubs, not traditional bars, etc so they will be under a different scrutiny.

If he owes $400K to 3 different women for child support, he has been in "hiding" for quite a while.

I am not posting the alias's I have run across for the time being.

Holbert has also been charged with operating a vehicle without insurance and a fictitious registration card.

This is important in that they charged him with this following his "turning himself in".

His failure to report change of address was not a sure thing, as it would have been arguable that it could have been considered an "address".   So investigators say, turn yourself in,  we will process you back out, the end.

Then, once he did that, they added the other.  Really smart on behalf of Cumberland County.

I hope it helps them advance their investigation and they find Kelli.

Kelli is very tiny.  Considering his criminal history ... could Kelli's size be the reason that she may have been targeted by Nicholas Holbert?

Kelli Bordeaux Search: Person of Interest Denies Involvement, Questioned Twice by Police

Bordeaux is 5-foot-1 and weighs 102 pounds. She was last seen wearing a pink tube top with spaghetti straps and black shorts

Froggy Bottoms bar owner arrested on federal, local violations

The owner of Froggy Bottoms bar on Ramsey Street was arrested on federal and local violations Monday morning , authorities said.

Steven Cantrell, 49, of the 300 block of Lynn Avenue in Fayetteville, is wanted in Boston for failing to pay $400,000 in child support payments to three women, a Cumberland County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.

Those warrants were issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Debbie Tanna said.

Cantrell also is accused of failing to show up in Cumberland County on a 2001 driving while impaired charge, Tanna said

Profiler: Bordeaux Search Should be Expanded

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Fayetteville Police Department will ask volunteers to help it search Thursday for evidence connected to the disappearance of Kelli Bordeaux.

The 23-year-old Fort Bragg soldier was last seen leaving Ramsey Street club Froggy Bottoms more than a week ago.

However, Dr. Maurice Godwin, an investigative psychologist, said police shouldn't be focusing on just the immediate area around the bar where Bordeaux was last seen. Godwin, who has worked on high profile cases like the Washington, D.C. sniper case in 2002 and several missing persons cases, thinks police need to expand their search.

"You don't know how long after she left the bar that she encountered any harm," said Godwin. "For example, she could have been taken down I-95 south."

Godwin said he doesn't have enough information to be certain of a location, but he's is fairly confident that Bordeaux did not go off with a stranger.

"Because of the tight time line of leaving the bar and going home and that type of thing, you have to consider it's an acquaintance that was familiar with her activities and routines that night," said Godwin.

Public asked to aid in search for missing female soldier

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Volunteers on Thursday will help police search for clues in the disappearance of missing Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux.

Fayetteville police have invited the public to join in the search for the 23-year-old U.S. Army medical specialist, who was last seen leaving the Froggy Bottoms bar at 6326 Ramsey St. around 1:20 a.m. on April 14.  A police investigation into her disappearance began April 16 after Bordeaux never showed up for duty.

During Thursday’s efforts, police said it’s possible searchers will need to walk through private residential property in the North Fayetteville region, where crews will be assigned to various locations throughout.

Husband Mark Bordeaux says he 'doesn't trust a word' bartender says about his missing wife, Kelli

North Carolina police have released what could be the last picture of a missing Fort Bragg soldier, who vanished earlier this month after a night on the town.

Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux snapped the iPhone photo of herself just hours before she disappeared on April 14 after leaving the Froggy Bottoms bar in Fayetteville.

Cops said the outfit she’s wearing in the photo — a flirty pink top and black shorts — was what she had on when she hit the pub that night, local station WGHP reported.

Fayetteville Police said they were continuing to gather information on the case, but wouldn’t reveal whether they had any leads.

Volunteers not giving up search for missing soldier

AYETTEVILLE, N.C. --

Volunteers continue to search for a missing Fort Bragg soldier, two weeks after her disappearance.

Volunteers, some with dog teams, gathered Saturday to search for 23-year-old Kelli Bordeaux.

Crews began their search early Saturday morning and plan to continue their search into the night, using night vision equipment.

"There are some areas that are so thick in there that you would have to take a chainsaw," said Chris Sayre, with the non profit group TMC K-9 Search and Rescue.

Fayetteville, N.C. — The mother of a Fort Bragg soldier who has been missing for nearly three weeks said Friday that the family is holding out hope that she will be found, despite the fact that police have no new leads in her disappearance.

"Until Detective Jeff Locklear tells me any different, I'm going to keep thinking that she's here, and she's being held and she just cannot get away from whoever has her," said Johnna Henson of her daughter, Pfc. Fayetteville, N.C. — The search continued Saturday for a missing Fort Bragg soldier last seen more than five weeks ago.

Searchers will be out again next Saturday, looking on the other side of Fayetteville, Wilson said.

Soldier's disappearance causing anguish for family

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --
Two times in the past week, a woman's body has been found in Fayetteville.

And both times it left anxious searchers without an answer about what happened to Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux, who has been missing since April 14.

Bordeaux's husband, Mike, says it's been an emotional time. He plans to be out searching with other volunteers for his wife next Saturday morning.

Tina Turner, the leader of a group of volunteers, says next weekend they plan to focus on the Dobbins Homes Road area.

Volunteers launch new search for Fort Bragg soldier missing 2 months

Published June 16, 2012

Volunteers are meeting Saturday to mount a new search for a Fort Bragg soldier missing for two months.

Pfc. Kelli Marie Bordeaux was last seen leaving Froggy Bottoms, a North Carolina bar, in the early morning hours on April 14.

Police believe Bordeaux, 23, left with a registered sex offender, Nicholas Holbert, who had reportedly been living in a lean-to behind the bar, WRAL-TV reports.

Holbert has told police that he dropped her off at the apartment she shared with her husband, who was away visiting family at the time. Holbert claims he had nothing to do with the woman's disappearance and says he is being unfairly targeted because of his criminal past.

He is convicted of indecent liberties with a 5-year-old.

Holbert, you are not being targeted because of your past, but because of your present.  You are presently the one who saw Ms. Bordeaux last and you are currently a register sex offender.
If your criminal past has been one of a shop lifer for example, your criminal past would not be a reason to target you.  Oh, but it is always someone else's fault, right?

$25G reward offered for information leading to missing soldier Kelli Bordeaux

Published March 23, 2013

FoxNews.com

Nearly one year since a 23-year-old Fort Bragg soldier disappeared from a North Carolina bar, authorities announced Friday that a $25,000 reward is being offered for information about the case.

Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux, a combat medic with the 44th Medical Brigade, disappeared April 14 after leaving Froggy Bottoms bar in Fayetteville around 1:20 a.m.

No suspects have been named in the case. The woman's husband, a civilian, was visiting family in Florida at the time, and Bordeaux had spent the night singing karaoke and drinking with friends at the hangout.

Nicholas Holbert, a 25-year-old "bar hand" who is also a convicted sex offender, told police he drove Bordeaux home to her apartment complex less than a mile away. He denied any involvement in the woman's disappearance, claiming Bordeaux asked to be dropped off at the entrance of her neighborhood. She was never seen or heard from again. Her cellphone pinged off a tower close to the bar before its battery died, investigators. But searches for the phone around the tower have come up empty.

Holbert was later arrested for failure to register as a sex offender at his new address in Cumberland County, N.C. He was convicted in 2003 at age 16 of indecent liberties with a 5-year-old chil

Remains of missing St. Cloud soldier Kelli Bordeaux found
May 14, 2014

A registered sex offender was arrested Wednesday after the presumed remains of missing St. Cloud soldier Kelli Bordeaux were found in woods a few miles from a bar where she was last seen, police in North Carolina said.

The sex offender, Nicholas Holbert, 27, was the last person known to have seen Bordeauex and a "person of interest" from the start, Fayetteville, N.C., police spokesman Lt. Todd Joyce. Holbert will be charged with first-degree murder when he goes before a magistrate late Wednesday or early Thursday, Joyce said.
 ::snipping3::
Detectives talked to Holbert early in the investigation and were interviewing him again late Wednesday. He told a North Carolina TV station shortly after Bordeaux's disappearance that he gave her a ride home from Froggy Bottoms but dropped her off at the entrance to her neighborhood.

Holbert was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender and spent time in prison in North Carolina after Bordeaux's disappearance, Joyce said. He lived in a tent or lean-to behind Froggy Bottoms, the owner told the Orlando Sentinel in 2012.

Acting on a tip, police on Wednesday located what they think are Bordeaux's remains in a remote area three or four miles from the bar. They made the discovery along River Road near Interstate 295. Investigators wouldn't disclose the exact location of the remains or the contents of the tip.

A medical examiner in Raleigh will make a positive identification. The Army in May 2013 declared Bordeaux dead so her family could receive survivors' benefits. She was married.

Law officers in North Carolina searched for Bordeaux for months. They said early on that her cellphone was last used along I-295.

Bordeaux was assigned to the 601st Area Support Medical Company, 261st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 44th Medical Brigade. She was a certified emergency medical technician, friends said.

A $25,000 reward was offered for information about Bordeaux. It was unknown Wednesday whether anyone was eligible to collect.

Missing NC soldier mom: suspect led cops to grave
May 15, 2014

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The suspect in the killing of a Fort Bragg soldier led investigators to the woman's grave in thick woods that had never been checked despite repeated foot and aerial searches by hundreds of volunteers, the victim's mother said Thursday.
Johnna Henson of St. Cloud, Florida, said Fayetteville police informed her Wednesday that they were led to the remains of Pfc. Kelli Bordeaux, 23, by information provided by Nicholas Holbert. He made a first court appearance Thursday on charges of first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping and was ordered held without bail.
"I had hoped all this time that she was going to come back and now there's no coming back," Henson said Thursday. "Nicholas Holbert took them to her. So that's pretty definite that, yeah, that's her. And he confessed to killing her."
Holbert, 27, recently led investigators to the remains, which were found in a densely wooded area about four miles from the bar, Police Chief Harold Medlock said Wednesday.
Hundreds of rescuers had scoured the area but never zoomed in on the particular spot where the remains were located until Holbert told investigators where to look, Medlock said.
"It was specific information from Holbert that took us to that location," Medlock said.
Positive identification of the body could take several days, he said.
Holbert spent almost five years in prison for molesting a 5-year-old when he was 16, according to state Division of Public Safety records. Holbert was convicted in October 2012 of failing to notify authorities that changed his home address as required by the state's sex offender law. He was released from jail a year ago.
Bordeaux was last seen alive with Holbert on April 13, 2012 at a Fayetteville bar, about a half-mile from her home. She spent the evening shooting pool and singing karaoke before leaving with Holbert, who was living in woods behind the bar.
The two had a fight in the bar's parking lot before Holbert knocked the woman unconscious, police investigators state in an arrest warrant reviewed by the Fayetteville *******. Holbert then put Bordeaux in his car and drove her to his camp site behind the bar, where he hit her several more times in the head until she was dead, the warrant said. Police did not return messages on Thursday.
Bordeaux's husband was visiting family in Florida, where the couple had met, the weekend that she died. The couple was in the process of separating but remained friends and neither was unfaithful to the other, Hanson said.
