Still no sign of 21-year-old Mickey Shunick.

She was last seen at around 2 o'clock Saturday morning when she left a friend's house in the Saint Streets area.
She was on her bike headed home to the area of Ambassador Caffery and West Congress, but she never made it home.

Mickey missed her brother's high school graduation Saturday, no one has been able to get in touch with her ever since.

Sunday, family and friends organized a search party, looking for clues and now a private donor is offering a ten thousand dollar reward for any information leading to the whereabouts of Mickey Shunick, no questions asked.
That donor is also hiring a private investigator, hoping to get answers to many unanswered questions.

Nearly one hundred people gathered on Ryan Drive where Mickey was last seen to canvas the area once again.
Family and friends knocking on doors, retracing Mickey's steps, and posting fliers.

"It doesn't take much of being around her to know how she is, how comfortable she is around other people, and how excited she is about life and everything that is going on. Something is clearly unusual with the circumstances," said search party organizer Brettly Wilson.

3. Reward offered: There is a $20,000 Reward for any information leading to the whereabouts of Mickey Shunick, no questions asked. We're told as more people contribute, that number could go up.

4. Quick facts: 21 year old Mickey Shunick was last seen at about 2:00 am on May 19th riding a black and gold Schwinn Madison bicycle with glittery gold handlebars from a friend's home in the Saint Streets area of Lafayette. She was riding back to her family's home to the area near Ambassador and Congress, but never made it home and hasn't been seen since. She is 5'1" tall, weighing about 115 pounds, has shoulder length curly blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a small tattoo of a bicycle on her right outer ankle and a nose ring on her left nostril.

She was last seen wearing a pastel multicolored striped shirt, light wash denim skinny jeans, and silver ankle boots. She was also carrying a light brown leather backpack, a black and yellow Vera Bradley wallet, a black Verizon slider phone and a small pink container of pepper spray.

4. Volunteer information: Volunteers meet at 100 Ryan Street, Lafayette, LA. Three experienced search leaders will lead an organized search at 1:00 and again at 5:00 on 5/23/12.

Dozens of volunteers have combed the four-mile route that Miss Shunick would have taken on Saturday night. 

A larger search area was covered by police officers with dogs but has so far been fruitless

Miss Shunick's sister Charlene told ABC: 'I think she's OK, I think she's alive. I think she's out there.'
Her mother Nancy Rowe added: 'We want our daughter back - that will make everything better.'

She added that her daughter's cellphone has been switched off since Saturday morning.

The student was described as an avid cyclist by her parents but they said that she had never disappeared for days in the past. The senior anthropology major missed her brother’s high school graduation on Saturday.

She would have not cycled through any areas which she thought were unsafe and always carried a can of Mace.

Search Intensifies for Missing Louisiana Student

(LAFAYETTE, La.) -- Police in Lafayette, La., are intensifying their search for a young woman who has been missing for four days.

Michaela "Mickey" Shunick was last seen riding a bike home from her friend's house at about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to police.  The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Lousiana State Police have joined the search, along with volunteers scouring the area where she was last seen.

Friends and family held a candle light vigil Tuesday night, and announced a reward of $20,000 for tips leading to her whereabouts.  Searches by K-9 units, police and volunteers haven't turned up any hints about what happened, but her family remains hopeful.

The location from her friends house on Ryan St to her parents home is about 4 miles.

she most likely would have traveled down West Congress. The bars would have been closing at this time......I personally feel like someone may of hit her and panicked. We did have allot of people in town for festivals and fairs so anything is possible. We are a college town but have allot of tourist that come through. Hundreds join in search

If you take a drive down West Congress Street in Lafayette, Mickey Shunick's face is everywhere. Fliers about the University of Louisiana student's disappearance are posted on nearly every utility pole along one of the city's main traffic corridors.

In some spots, staked to the ground are yard signs bearing the image of her smiling face. The case of the woman whose 22nd birthday was Monday has gripped the community and has yet to be solved by police.
In the Saints Streets neighborhood where Shunick was last seen in the early morning hours of Saturday, the entire area has become a command post of sorts. People park wherever they can near her Ryan Street home as they volunteer their time to find Shunick.

Individuals and businesses have donated cases of water, sandwiches, fruit and snacks. Most volunteers take a stack of fliers and a staple gun, look at a highlighted map of Lafayette Parish and head out to areas that have not yet been searched. Others stay inside the Ryan Street house, monitoring news and social media websites or providing food and water to other volunteers.

Search for Mickey Shunick Goes Viral on Social Media, National Media

The search for Mickey Shunick has exploded on a national level and on social media. Before there were search parties on the ground, a Facebook campaign to find her was already in full swing.

An online team is working around the clock at the volunteer headquarters on Ryan Street. Their posts and videos are starting to go viral and it's helping to raise awareness and hopefully find Shunick.

Ashley Prado tirelessly scans Facebook, Twitter, BuzzFeed, Reddit... Any online sight that has any post about her close friend Mickey.

Also her phone has/had been turned off. The phone apparently is not a smart phone but that is only hearsay from people here.

That is a bad combination.  I have not seen any mention if she was wearing any reflective vest/had headlamp on/lights on bike etc. 

My son was on his motorcycle last fall waiting at a red light.  Full safetygear, reflective tape on the back of his bike jacket, backpack with refelectors on and a moron drunk driver did not see him or the red light and blitzed him at 60km/h.  Pushed his motorcycle for about 50ft sparks flying before drunk noticed something was wrong.

Do we have a map of where she was last seen and where she was heading to?

I saw where it said it was shut off on Sat morning.  Not sure how they know the difference between it being shut off or battery going dead.  Not good either way.  I pray for her safe return.

Continued support for search efforts to find missing cyclist

LAFAYETTE, LA — All it will take is one key piece of evidence to give investigators a clue as to what happened to cause Mickey Shunick to go missing. Although tips continue to pour in to the devoted hotline at the Lafayette Police Department, officials say the case is still lacking evidence.

“Right now we don’t have anything concrete to go on,” Cpl. Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police Department, said about the investigation. “We’re still following up leads that have come in from the tip line, and we’ve expanded our search to include different areas of the parish based on what we feel could have happened.”

What did happen?

All we know for sure is that Shunick was last seen on Saturday, May 19 at 2:00 a.m. The now 22-year-old anthropology major at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette left a friends house and headed home on her bicycle.

No one has seen or heard from her since then.

I am hoping the family and friends have contacted the Greek Community at UofL to get Mickey's posters and information out.  An email to all the fraternity and sororities asking them to forward to their members, elders and other chapters would be a great way to get the information out.

Reward in Shunick case officially increased

The reward for information leading to the whereabouts of Michaela “Mickey” Shunick has officially been increased to $25,000, on the same afternoon as an official search party continues to look for the woman who has been missing since early Saturday morning.

A volunteer search party continued the search Wednesday for 22-year-old Shunick, whose disappearance has garnered national attention.


Volunteers searched Acadiana Park for the missing woman. They also gathered at the Ryan Street home that serves as the volunteer headquarters. Businesses such as Raising Canes, Papa Johns, Winn Dixie and Office Depot have agreed to donate items to help this effort.

Bicycle ride set to support search for missing woman

LAFAYETTE — A “solidarity ride” for missing university student Mickey Shunick is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday and will leave from Parc Sans Souci in downtown Lafayette.

Bicyclists and walkers are encouraged to meet at the Parc. They will follow the route to Shunick’s home on Governor Miro Street off Ambassador Caffery Parkway.

Searching Lake Martin for Mickey Shunick

A group is meeting at Lake Martin at 5:00 p.m. to search the area for Mickey Shunick. Organizers say they haven't received any sort of tip, but they feel they are just covering their bases. They're asking for anyone with a boat/canoe/kayak who can meet them out there, to do so. Those on foot can help walk around the bird sanctuaries where the boats cannot reach. Everyone is meeting at the Pack and Paddle, and they'll be going out to Lake Martin for 5:00. If you need more information, call 852-0807.

Texas firm now involved in Shunick search

A highly-regarded Texas organization that specializes in missing persons cases has now taken an interest in the Mickey Shunick case.

Tim Miller, director of the nonprofit Texas Equusearch, is heading to Lafayette from Houston this afternoon to meet with law enforcement officials and members of Shunick’s family.


“We’re going to see what resources we have that may be an asset to the search effort and what members we may need to bring there,” Miller said.

Michaela 'Mickey' Shunick's mom thinks daughter was 'abducted by a stranger'

Tuesday night, the mother of missing Lafayette, La. college student Michaela “Mickey” Shunick spoke out, saying she believes an opportunistic stranger kidnapped her daughter.

Nancy Rowe told Jane Velez-Mitchell during an appearance on her HLN show, “Somebody took her. Somebody knows where she is, and we want her returned alive.”

She added, “...this was not a stalking... I think she was abducted by a stranger who saw an opportunity and took her... we want to give that person money to get our daughter back.”

Her family says they can't think of any reason anybody might want to harm Shunick, and her father said although he's grateful for the search efforts, he wishes the search had started earlier.

"None of the video cameras got checked over the weekend because the managers weren't in and waited two days to check the video cameras," he told Lafayette newspaper The Advertiser. "If somebody has abducted her and taken her on the Interstate or something, they got a two-day head start."

Donations Keep Search for Mickey Going

The amount of donations to fuel the search for Mickey Shunick continues to grow. Volunteers said they are overwhelmed by the community support that keeps them going.

Volunteer Margaret Bearb heads up the food donations; she can barely keep up with all of the donations flowing in.

"Still have things coming in, we just really appreciate all the community support, this family really needs it," said Bearb.

It's not just food and water, they receive money, supplies and basic necessities.

"We've had a dumpster delivered here, we have a porta-potty, we have toilet paper, paper towels, everything that is necessary to host the hundreds of volunteers who are showing up to participate in the search and outreach effort," said one of the volunteer coordinators, Kristen Kordecki.

Businesses are chipping in too, and not just with donations. Lamar is running more than 50 billboards in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. Officials at Lamar said they expect that the number of billboards will increase over the next few days. Walgreens is also helping by running information about Shunick on all of their marquees.

I worked in the area of (the friends house on Ryan St) about 20 years ago. I would not put myself in that area at 2 AM or after dark for that matter. The Ryan St area is older but well kept homes. But the other side of West Congress across from Ryan St is filled with dilapidated houses with allot of questionable activity.
She had to go through at least 3 major intersections. There are traffic cameras but I think they are only activated if you are running a red light. I am very happy that Tim Miller is coming in on this.

I saw on JVM tonight where the guy friend she was last with was speaking.  If they went to Taco Bell in his car then there will be video of it.  I am hoping there will be some kind of video after she left his home.  He said something that felt very hinky to me.  JVM asked if they were in a relationship and he said no but then it got asked a diff way as in did he have feelings for her and he said no but that was okay!  I have the feeling she didn't get far from his house.  If he did do something I don't think he will be able to hold it in forever.

LAFAYETTE — Tips related to missing college student Michaela “Mickey” Shunick have streamed in each hour of the day since word spread of her Saturday disappearance, but so far none have resulted in a solid lead, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

“We’re receiving several per hour … and it really hasn’t slowed down,” Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton said of the number of tips police have received.

Searchers Follow Bike Route Where Missing La. Student Was Last Seen

(LAFAYETTE, La.) -- Dozens of people gathered Thursday to ride the route presumably taken by missing Louisiana college student Michaela "Mickey" Shunick when she vanished on her bike last Saturday.

Friends and searchers took to the route at dusk, following the path on which Shunick set out in the early hours of Saturday morning.  FBI, U.S. Marshals and local police are involved in the search that they are treating as a missing person case, but have not ruled out foul play.

Shunick, 22, a senior anthropology major at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, left friend Brettly Wilson's house on her bike just before 2 a.m. Saturday after a night out, and hasn't been heard from since.

"I asked her to be safe ... I saw her get to the driveway and that was the last time I saw her," Wilson said.

Volunteer headquarters for Shunick search moving this morning

The volunteer headquarters of the Mickey Shunick campaign are moving to a new location at Our Lady of Wisdom Center.
The center is located on the corner of St. Mary and McKinley St. on UL's campus. The move is due to the growing number of supporters and volunteers.

Artmosphere, Ragbags, and I-10; Odds and Ends of the Michaela Mickey Shunich Case!

One day later, and I still haven`t learned much more about Michaela Mickey Shunick`s perplexing disappearance in the wee hours of Saturday, May 19th. From what I can tell, no local news outlets posted any new stories on Mickey`s case, with the exception of ABC, and HLN`s Jane Velez-Mitchell featured her case as her top story. Okay, so I did manage to fill in the picture a bit more. Yesterday, I didn`t know anything about Mickey going to the Artmosphere club (with some friends) to hear some bands last Friday night?

We get a better idea of what was going on before Mickey left Brettly Wilson`s house, (of course) on her Schwinn bicycle at 2:00 AM. She left with some mace on hand, as always, we`re hearing also. Brettly has readily and openly provided us with the only narrative we have of Michaela`s last night seen. We hear some bits about a Taco Bell rendezvous and we also learn that Mickey was only drinking water at the Artmosphere. Yet there may have been some drinking involved the previous night, which was Thursday the 17th?

This could be a dead end too, but has to be explored by the official investigators there in Lafayette, La. The look of this suggests that Artmosphere has nothing to do with this. Brettly Wilson was a great friend to Mickey, and he most certainly should be cleared. The culprit here (as I see it), is riding your bike on crowded urban streets at 2 in the morning, when some sickos are combing the streets looking for someone to prey on.

Only from Brettly.  Not heard anything about obtaining camera footage etc.  Odd that her bike has vanished as well.  If she was abducted it would take too much time and effort to take her bike as well IMO.  Wonder if she either fell and was disoriented or as Cartfly suggested may have been hit by a vehicle.

I still think this guy has something to do with her missing!  Lots of time to get rid of someone and a bike from the time "he" says she left to the time she was discovered missing.  He's off to me and like I said in my earlier post, I think he admitted to having feeling for her on JVM.  Will look for transcript.

Plus, does a traveling carnival have anything to do with her disappearance? We`re answering every question next.

VELEZ-MITCHELL (voice-over): Tonight, the desperate search for a missing Louisiana college student escalates. Volunteers take to the streets to search and support this devastated family as cops defend their response to her disappearance. Could a traveling carnival be the clue police need to finding this 22-year-old?

Tonight I`ll talk exclusively to the friend who last saw Mickey Shunick alive. What did this beautiful girl do in the hours before her disappearance?

Plus, her family joins me live tonight.

And Gary Giordano grabs headlines, again. The sole suspect in the disappearance of Robyn Gardner caught with his pants down, literally. NANCY ROWE, MOTHER: We want our daughter back and that would make everything better.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She reportedly left a friend`s home in Lafayette on her bicycle, headed home.

WILSON: Checked her bike, checked her mace. Closed the door and locked it. That was the last time I saw her.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She`s just perfect, and I just love her so much, and I miss her so much, and I want her home now.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The reward for her safe return has now made it to $20,000.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I know that I`ll never look at a missing person`s case the same ever again.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Tonight, the mystery deepens. Frantic family, friends and bloggers, investigating every angle, desperately searching for beautiful missing Mickey Shunick, two days before her 22nd birthday.

This stunning, petite college student leaves her friend`s house in the dead of night and disappears. Moments ago police told the family they definitely have leads but would not divulge details.

Mickey was riding a bike that looked a lot like the bike we`re about to show you. But authorities are unsure what route she took or where she ended up. Her home, four and a half miles from the friend`s house and the most likely route, this one on Congress Street. But so far, she has not been seen on any surveillance video along the route.

Last night, a candlelight vigil held for Mickey. Hundreds of people banded together to lend their support to the distraught family.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: That poor woman. We interviewed her last night.

What happened the night Mickey disappeared? We`ve been interviewing Mickey`s friends and family. Here`s what we discovered, but we`re going to discuss this timeline because, boy, we get, you know, bits and pieces here and there.

Mickey and nine friends were at a bar called Artmosphere in Lafayette. That`s the bar right there. At about 1 in the morning, Mickey and her friend Brettly biked to Brettly`s house which has since become command central in the search for this young lady.

Then Mickey and Brettly reportedly got in Brettly`s car and drove to Taco Bell and picked up some food, drove back to Brettly`s house. At about 2 in the morning Mickey got on her bike and left Brettly`s house. Listen to Brettly describe the final moments before Mickey left.

WILSON: Checked her bike, checked her mace, and then she went through the back door. I told her to be safe and closed the door, locked it. And that was the last time I saw her.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: With no apparent clues, blogs have lit up with theories about what might have happened. One such theory: well, there`s a carnival, it turns out, in town. And there have been theories, speculations, questions. Could some suspicious characters come along with this carnival?

The Cajun Heartland State Fair being held at the Cajun Dome, which is just a little over a mile from Mickey`s friend`s house. But this theory, is it grasping at straws or could there actually be a connection?

Straight out to our exclusive guest, Brettly Wilson, the very last person to see Mickey Shunick before she vanished.

Brettly, thank you so much for joining us tonight. Let`s just start by -- if you can tell us what happened, you`re at this Artmosphere with apparently nine other friends, including Mickey. And how did you end up getting separated from eight of them and then you and Mickey going back to your place?

WILSON: Well, Mickey was pretty tired. Her sister had come in the night before. They were both going to go to her brother`s graduation the next night. And so she as ready to go before anyone else was.

By the end of the night came, everyone decided they were going to go their separate ways. They didn`t want food. They wanted to go home and didn`t want to go somewhere else. So me and Mickey took off towards my house, and I offered to get her food at a nearby Taco Bell.

WILSON: We went to my house. It was too late to bike indoors (ph) with Taco Bell. So we got in the car, and I took her through the drive- through. She picked something up, brought it back. She ate it.

At that point we got two phone calls from friends, asking, you know, where we were, checking on us and saying they were going to go get food somewhere else. At that point, Mickey decided she was still too tired. She had gotten food and so she had wanted to go home at that point.

This is what bothered me..."After me and her friend split up, me and Mickey kind of got a little closer, but it was anything but platonic, AND THAT WAS FINE."  Did not like how he said that!  If it was me and I might be looked at as suspicious, I wouldn't say something like that.  It just felt like he wanted us to think he "was fine" she didn't return his affection/advances/whatever he was putting out there to her.  It's probably just me feeling this way and I hope for his sake there are store/gas station/traffic videos of her after she left his home.  I don't think it would take a lot to break him if they needed too.

Find Mickey Now: The search continues

LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - Volunteers from across the nation have gathered at the new "Find Mickey Now" headquarters at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church in Lafayette, La.

Mickey Shunick, 22, was last seen early Saturday morning riding a black and gold bike from a friend's home in the St. Streets area of Lafayette. She was headed to her home near Ambassador and Congress, but never made it home and has not been seen since.

She was last seen wearing a pastel multicolored striped shirt, light wash skinny jeans and gray shoes. She had a brown, leather, backpack purse with her.

Texas EquuSearch was requested to assist in the search for Michaela "Mickey" Shunick. According to the Texas EquuSearch website, the search started at 10 a.m. Thursday. The Command Center is located at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church, 501 E. Saint Mary Blvd., Lafayette, LA 70503. Searchers are in need of ATVs, horses and foot searchers. If you would like to help search, they are requesting that you please bring your own water and snacks, along with a photo identification. Searchers must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

GIVERS in benefit concert for Mickey

A benefit concert featuring GIVERS and Vagabond Swing to raise funds in the search for Mickey Shunick, 22, who has been missing since Saturday (May 19), is scheduled for Sunday at Parc International, 200 Garfield in downtown Lafayette.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and the music scheduled from 5:30-8 p.m. There's a suggested donation of $15 per person, but any amount will be appreciated.

"It was just one of those things that kind of evolved," says Jody Nederveld, a volunteer who helped organize the event. "The GIVERS had stepped up and at some point said they want to do something."

I find that the claim of Brittly regarding Mickey's actions prior to leaving were somewhat scripted considering the bike had be riden from the event a short time earlier.  I could be wrong.

She actually rode her bike to the show, which is a bit further than my house. It was nothing out of the ordinary for her to bike anywhere, no matter the time of day.

Why are we posting about Sierra's case in Mickey's thread?

It is upsetting for those who are following Mickey's case to come in here and read words such as "picked up at her gate", which causes anyone to get the impression Mickey has been found and possibly harmed.

Mickey's father confirmed on JVM that a surviellance camera captured Brettly Wilson's vehicle at Taco Bell's drive-thru at 1:30 AM.  However ... according to her father ... nothing yet has been revealed from along the route Mickey's would have biked to her home.

A Well-Known Texas Search Team is Lending a Hand to Help Find Mickey

Tim Miller is all too familiar with missing persons. His teenage daughter Laura went missing in 1984 and police considered her a runway.

"Unfortunately 17 months later her body and 3 other bodies were found two and half miles from my house," said Miller.

Since then, Miller founded Texas Equusearch Mounted Search and Recovery Team. He and volunteers travel the country searching for missing persons working hand-in-hand with police.

"We're hoping for the best. We don't sugarcoat anything. It does not look good, doesn't look good at all, but we believe in miracles," he said of the efforts to find Mickey.

Equusearch volunteers go through structured trainings where they learn to search for evidence and differentiate between human and animal bones.

"I think we've got the determination, we've got the experience, we've got the resources, all we need is a little bit of luck," Miller added.

A couple of changes since moving to the new volunteer center and Equusearch took over-- not only is it more spacious but no cameras are allowed on searches and all volunteers are asked to leave their cell phones because there is only one focus, and that is, to find Mickey

"They know what to look for, they know what we may not have thought of yet," said Mickey's friend, Ashley Says.

Says believes Equusearch is not only providing necessary resources, but their presence is increasing morale.

"We're not going to stop, we're not going to rest, we're going to get her back," said Says.

We have received messages regarding Mickey being missing on our landlines.
Also last weekend there were many graduations going on. There are flyers everywhere including billboards and digital messages CVS and Walgreens, as well as at one of our baseball parks my sons play at. There was also a call last night for people with atvs for the day search today with Equisearch.

Thanks to all of you for updating Mickey's case. This last week of school has been hectic so I haven't had much time to update here.

Brettly Wilson has shared his account of the last time he saw his friend, Mickey Shunick, repeatedly in the past six days.

At about 2 a.m., he says, Shunick was at his Ryan Street home when she unlocked her bicycle, checked her can of Mace spray and told him goodbye.

"I walked her out the back door. I told her to be safe. I waited until she made it out of the driveway, then I closed the door, locked it and that was the last time I ever saw her," said Wilson, the last person reportedly to have had contact with Shunick before she vanished.

Cyclists keep focus on safety

One question, among many, in the search for Mickey Shunick has been: Why was she riding her bicycle in the dark, early morning hours?

Friends say the bicycle was simply Shunick's normal mode of transportation. And fellow cyclists say it's not uncommon to bike in Lafayette at night and when traffic is light.

Lafayette police say they have not recovered any items belonging to Mickey Shunick as the investigation into her disappearance reached its seventh day.

Police continue to receive about 20 tips per hour through a special tips line devoted to the case, said Cpl. Paul Mouton, spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department, at a Friday press conference.
All of those tips are being investigated, but none of them have led to any indication of where Shunick is or what might have happened to her.

CW...as I understand it Brettly and Mickey both biked to Artmosphere.  The only reason they went to Taco B in his vehicle was they won't serve anyone biking up to the drive thru.  I know that is pretty common practice in any fast food place I've been to.  I wanna hear that there is footage of this pretty young lady after she left his home!  I don't believe there will be any.  I think she broke his heart somehow and he couldn't take it.  I may be wrong and usually am but that is how I am feeling right now.

Possible Video of Missing Louisiana Student Discovered

(LAFAYETTE, La.) -- Investigators who've expanded their search after combing the area where Michaela "Mickey" Shunick disappeared found surveillance video showing a glimpse of someone riding a bicycle who they believe could be the Louisiana student.

The footage is too blurry to tell whether the person is Shunick, a senior anthropology major at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, police said.  The 22-year-old left a friend's house on her bike last week after a night out, and hasn't been heard from since.

As investigators and the woman's family expand the search, even sending out a recorded plea for help mentioning a $25,000 reward for information, some people in the area where she vanished have begun to wonder whether Shunick was abducted at all.

"What concerns us is, where is her bicycle?" Det. Stephen Bajat of the Lafayette police department said.  "If it is some kind of abduction, most people would snatch and go on and not concern themselves with the bicycle."

Friend of Missing Student Regrets Letting Her Bike Alone

The missing woman's friends and family describe Wilson as a close friend to Shunick, noting that the two planned to move to New Orleans together this summer. Despite their plans to live together, Wilson and Shunick are not dating and have never dated, according to both Wilson and Shunick's friends.

The two have been friends for the past four years, Wilson said.

One of the most difficult questions Wilson said he has had to answer in the past few days is "Why did you let your close friend get on a bicycle at 2 a.m.?" It is one he also wrestles with.

"That's the one thing: I could have helped. I could have been there, and we wouldn't be here now," Wilson said as he wiped away a tear from his cheek.

Missing Lafayette woman captured on video, white pickup sought

The following is a Press Release from the Lafayette Police Department:
 
Detectives were able to identify a bicyclist believed to be Mickey Shunick traveling on Versailles Blvd and Saint Landry Street. 

At approximately 1:47 a.m. the bicyclist is captured on Versailles Blvd traveling towards St. John Street. She then traveled on St. John Street and crossed over University Avenue, continuing west on St. Landry Street where she was captured on video at approximately 1:48 p.m. 

Investigators are seeking information regarding a white newer model four door pickup truck, which was captured on video after Mickey Shunick traveled on both streets.

Family members of a missing Lafayette woman are speaking out about her disappearance.

Mickey Shunick was reported missing after leaving a home in Lafayette on her bicycle. Friends and family say it's unlikely the 22-year-old ran away. So they are shocked and confused.

"We haven't found her bicycle, we haven't found a piece of her bicycle, we haven't found a paint chip from her bicycle, we haven't found a strand of hair anywhere, no DNA evidence," says Mickey's sister, Charlie Shunick. She says she believes her sister was abducted.

Okay, it's looking like I own Mr. Brettly an apology!  I guess I'm so used to the person closest to the missing being the bad guy, and watching too much Discovery ID!  I hope they are able to rule in or out this truck!  I get the feeling they can see the plates and are honing in on them!

I am learning that my hinky feelings cannot be relied upon.  However ... it does appears that 16 hours of interrogation by investigators implies we were not alone in our suspicions regarding Brettly.

I am in agreement.  It will not be long before the driver of that pickup is identified.

Police search for two additional vehicles in Shunick case

Lafayette, LA - Officers with the Lafayette Police Department are searching for two additional vehicles in the case of Mickey Shunick who has been missing since May 19, 2012.

Police released surveillance footage Friday that displays a white four-door pickup truck that appears near where Shunick was last seen. Surveillance footage shows Shunick riding a bicycle west on St. Landry St at 1:48 a.m.

Additional surveillance footage, released Saturday, shows a second white four-door pickup truck in the area. The second truck is described as a Chevrolet Silverado Z71.

Police also released another surveillance image that shows a third vehicle near the scene. It is described as an 80's or 90's four-door vehicle with body work.

If you have any information that could help police locate Mickey Shunick, you are asked to call the tips line at 337-291-8633.

Although they acknowledge that finding and releasing a piece of surveillance video brought a slew of new tips, police announced they have cancelled today's 3 p.m. press conference on the latest developments in the Mickey Shunick case.

The search headquarters is moving again to the Blackham Colosseum on Johnston St. The video from St Landry St that picked up Mickey on her bike runs into the Colosseum towards the rear of the building. this is all just a few blocks from UL's campus. The people here are going above and beyond to find Mickey. It is quite heart warming and sad at the same time. Unfortunately, allot of time has gone by.

I hate to say this and I am sure the pd is onto this but trash pickup in that area should have been on Monday and I believe Thursday.

Did you notice the same truck is going both ways down that street that Mickey was going down? You can tell by the cars in the gas station that it appears to be within minutes. In the top pic it looks like they either don't have a tailgate or it's down (see pic 3), IMO.

Police 'flooded' with tips in search for missing Louisiana college student Michaela Shunick


Louisiana authorities say they have been "flooded" with tips in their search for a missing college student last seen leaving a late-night party by bicycle.

The search for Michaela "Mickey" Shunick intensified after police released surveillance videos Friday showing a bicyclist thought to be the missing 22-year-old college student. Police also said they were eyeing a white four-door pickup truck seen in the same video.

"We've actually been flooded with information on potential trucks and why they are suspicious, that we should check a residence because there is a truck there," Lafayette police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton told the Daily Advertiser. "The tips have included anything and everything. It's been a tremendous response.

Shunick volunteer headquarters moving

The volunteer headquarters for the Find Mickey Shunick effort is moving to Blackham Coliseum tonight.

The headquarters are being moved to give volunteers more space to work. An estimated 320 to 350 people signed up to search on Saturday, and dozens more are working inside the headquarters.


Volunteers first were at 100 Ryan St., the home where Shunick was last seen on May 19. After a few days, they moved to Our Lady of Wisdom on the UL campus. Tonight's move will be from Our Lady of Wisdom to Blackham Coliseum.

Mickey Shunick: Missing Student's Bike Found Under Bridge

Two fishermen found the bicycle of missing Louisiana student Michaela "Mickey" Shunick today, more than a week after the 22-year-old woman went missing after leaving a friend's home on her bike.

Police found the bike early this morning under a bridge at Whiskey Bay on the Atchafalaya River, after being tipped off by the fishermen.

Shunick's family members were brought to the scene and confirmed that the bike is Shunick's black and gold Schwinn. Police are not releasing details on the bike's condition.

Police are planning to perform a grid search of the area where the bike was found on ATVs. Officers are searching the Atchafalaya River by boat, but the river's current was too strong to allow for divers this afternoon, police said.

Lafayette Police confirmed that a bicycle found under the Whiskey Bay exit off Interstate 10 this morning is the same bicycle that Michaela “Mickey” Shunick was riding when she was last seen on May 19.

The bicycle was found underneath the overpass after fishermen called the information in to the Lafayette Police Department tips line. Investigators arrived on the scene Sunday morning and are continuing to process the area for clues.

"The entire area and the river are being searched for clues and evidence," said Lafayette Police Department PIO Cpl. Paul Mouton in an email Sunday afternoon. "Police are asking the public to remain out of the area so that law enforcement officials can search."

Mouton also said that the Shunick family has confirmed the found bicycle belongs to Mickey.

Currently, members of the St. Martin Parish Narcotics Unit are using four-wheelers to scour the treeline and woods in the area. A Louisiana State Police helicopter is flying low, performing an aerial search.

Underneath the bridge itself, K-9 units and a Lafayette Police Department command post are set up to help direct the searchers.

The article says none of her belongings have been found, purse, cell phone, etc...

One could imagine that either she willingly got into a vehicle or there was more than one person in the vehicle.  I'm thinking the latter.  The abduction was too 'clean'.

I wonder how far her bike was found from the neighborhood she was last seen in?

This is only about 20 minutes away or so. Allot is flying around locally. The search is intensifying in that area right now. The exit s blocked off from motorist.
I am filled with sadness right now.

My understanding of the video at the following link is that Mickey was captured on surveillance at The Circle K which is south of the route home.  It doesn't make sense.

This is not a good area, it's a swamp area and near the atchafalaya basin which is huge. The bridge where the bike was located is west of Lafayette near Cecilia and Breaux bridge going towards Baton Rouge. There are lots of fisherman out this weekend so maybe there willbe some resolution. This is the same area that serial killer from Baton Rouge a few years back placed a local victim. I can only remember his first name was Derrick.

Just for my knowing...what kind of car does Brettly have?  Wondering if her bike looks like it had been hit or not?  Lots of questions!  Why did she go a little out of the way home, stopping somewhere else or maybe just taking the most lighted way home?????  Poor girl, hasn't looked good since the beginning!

Brettly, thank you so much for joining us tonight. Let`s just start by -- if you can tell us what happened, you`re at this Artmosphere with apparently nine other friends, including Mickey. And how did you end up getting separated from eight of them and then you and Mickey going back to your place?

WILSON: Well, Mickey was pretty tired. Her sister had come in the night before. They were both going to go to her brother`s graduation the next night. And so she as ready to go before anyone else was.

By the end of the night came, everyone decided they were going to go their separate ways. They didn`t want food. They wanted to go home and didn`t want to go somewhere else. So me and Mickey took off towards my house, and I offered to get her food at a nearby Taco Bell.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: So you went -- you went to Taco Bell straight from Artmosphere, or did you go home first?

WILSON: We went to my house. It was too late to bike indoors (ph) with Taco Bell. So we got in the car, and I took her through the drive- through. She picked something up, brought it back. She ate it.

At that point we got two phone calls from friends, asking, you know, where we were, checking on us and saying they were going to go get food somewhere else. At that point, Mickey decided she was still too tired. She had gotten food and so she had wanted to go home at that point.

LAFAYETTE, La. – A week-old surveillance video showing a bicyclist believed to be Michaela "Mickey" Shunick  has offered renewed hope of finding the missing college student soon.

Lafayette police released footage Friday night that they believe shows Shunick, a 22-year-old senior anthropology major at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, riding her bicycle in downtown Lafayette.

Police said one segment of video shows the cyclist on Versailles Boulevard, traveling toward St. John Street at 1:47 a.m. CDT May 19. She then traveled onto St. John Street and crossed over University Avenue, continuing west on St. Landry Street, where she was seen on another video at 1:48 a.m.

In relation to Brettly's home ... where was the bike located?

The indirect route home that a tired Mickey was allegedly biking and ... the absence of any of her personal belongings at the scene where the bike was located is giving me a hinky feeling.  My hinky feelings have often been wrong in the past.

The area where the bike was found is just off of Exit 127 of I-10 in Iberville Parish, about midway between Lafayette and Baton Rouge. The road leading from the exit is rural, with tall grass, patches of thick woods and a general swampy atmosphere. Still, it is usually well-traveled by fishermen and outdoors enthusiasts.

The location where the bike was found is more than 30 miles from where it was last seen in the early morning hours of May 19, when surveillance cameras near downtown Lafayette captured Shunick riding the bike along Versailles Boulevard and St. Landry Street.

I would think it would be trash like cans, paper etc either from someone just throwing something off the bridge or careless fisherman. It is a very rural area. If I remember right there is a boat launch there where trash from the basin would wash up and build up in areas of the boat launch. People tend to be lazy and just dump stuff of course or the trash cans or full and the wind blows it around. I am thinking that if this person took the time to take that exit to dump the bike, that she will be found there as well or further down in the basin. I hate saying this because I would love to find a live Mickey but we all know from following these cases how they "usually" end up. I hope to be proven wrong.

Another thing is (if I remember right) this is the last exit when traveling to Baton Rouge.So it would be the place to "turn around" to head back to Lafayette otherwise you are stuck on that bridge till you get close to Baton Rouge. The bridge is about 20 miles long and there are cameras on the bridge,  as well as the exits from what I understand. This area is home to one of the biggest swamp areas and a wildlife management area (wooded area). Unless this person had a boat, I think she will be found close. It would have taken someone less than 10-15 minutes to have abducted her, headed up University Ave to I-10. Then the Whiskey Bay exit would of taken someone another 20-35 minutes to reach from Lafayette at I-10.

Praying for the divers safety. They will have zero visibility in that river as well as fishing lines and trash to contend with.

Sigh~ IF there is a large wildlife population, there's no telling what may be recovered of Mickey's body.  Hate to sound macabre, but we all know about natures food chain.

Thanks CW! I was able to see the boat launch area from your map in street view and clicking on photos. It also looks like from the picture you posted of Le at the location, that it was right under the bridge area where the bike was located almost as if someone stopped on I-10 and tossed it from above rather than exiting. The wild life is very large in the area. But when we have been on the highway going over the swamp land we have seen boats out fishing.

I wonder, at 2am or whatever time this was, this young girl decided to go around the "long way" towards her house, rather than the straight path.  Unless, she was abducted prior to making her turn?

Thank you.  I now understand that this is a entire waterway system.  They said the current was too strong today which had me thinking, which way does the curent in that area usually flow?  I hate to say this, but if she was thrown in the water, where would the current end up taking her?

Northern the area is large. But after all is said and done it would end up in Atchafalaya Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. Some where around 50 miles I think.

We have not had any rain in more than a week and a half. I am hoping prints can be lifted from the bike and matched up. I wonder if prints can be lifted if an item is submerged in water.....

The mother of Michaela "Mickey" Shunick said she believes her missing daughter is the victim of an accident after police on Sunday found the 22-year-old college student's bicycle under the Whiskey Bay bridge on Interstate 10.

Police say Shunick's bicycle was found about 30 miles east of Lafayette near the swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin, and that Shunick's family confirmed it was her black-and-gold Schwinn.

Police end search near Whiskey Bay for missing Lafayette woman

Lafayette police ended a search Monday in an area under Interstate 10 near Whiskey Bay where the bicycle of missing student Michaela “Mickey” Shunick was found Sunday, spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said Monday.

Police called off the search after no other evidence was found in the area, Mouton said

“They’ve exhausted everywhere they can search,” Mouton said.

Authorities in Louisiana and Indiana are looking into the eerie similarities between the cases of two female college students who vanished after nights out with friends nearly one year apart.

Bloomington, Ind. police investigating the 2011 disappearance of Indiana University student Lauren Spierer have reached out to authorities in Lafayette, La., who are searching for missing University of Louisiana at Lafayette student Michaela "Mickey" Shunick, who vanished on May 19, Fox News reported.

Shunick, a 5-foot-1, 115-pound blond, was last seen leaving a friend's house near the school on a bicycle at around 2 a.m., just days before her 22nd birthday.

Her family reported her missing the next morning when she didn't show up to her brother's graduation ceremony, according to local reports.

Surveillance video released last week showed a petite blond woman police believed was Shunick pedaling through an area near where she was last seen.

Her black and gold Schwinn bike was found on Sunday by some fisherman under a highway bridge near Atchafalaya River, about 25 miles away.

Search crews have searched the woods and swamplands in the area, but have found no sign of the senior anthropology major.

"We've got boats on the water, and are looking in the woods as well for any other evidence. We've set up a perimeter around the area where the bike was found and are processing the entire area," Lafayette police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton told the Lafayette Daily Advertiser newspaper.

Update: 5/28/2012

As of noon, Lafayette Police have discontinued the search of the area surrounding where Mickey Shunick’s bike was found. Investigators were unable to locate any other significant evidence. The investigation remains ongoing.

UPDATE 5/27/2012:  Lafayette Police are confirming that Mickey Shunick's bike has been found beneath the Whiskey Bay I-10 Bridge at Exit #127. Some local fisherman located the bike and notified police through the tips line. The entire area and the river are being searched for clues and evidence. Police are asking the public to remain out of the area so that law enforcement officials can search. The case remains under investigation.

Update 5/26/12: Detectives have provided an updated picture of the initial vehicle of interest and the pictures of two additional vehicles that were in the area during the same time frame when Mickey Shunick was last captured on surveillance footage. The first truck (Picture1) drove from the area that Mickey had traveled. It is evident from the new photo that the vehicle has a bed cover and tinted windows. The second truck (Picture2) is a white 4 door Chevrolet Z71 that traveled in the same direction of Mickey on St. Landry Street. The third vehicle (Pictures 3 &4) is an 80’s or 90’s 4-door vehicle with body work on the rear right quarter panel. Detectives are interested in locating the vehicles and speaking with the occupants to obtain further information on the case. Anyone with information about the case of the pickup truck is encouraged to call the tips line at 337-291-8633 or Crime Stoppers at 337-232-TIPS.

UPDATE 5/25/2012: Detectives were able to identify a bicyclist believed to be Mickey Shunick travelling on Versailles Blvd and Saint Landry Street.  At approximately 1:47AM the bicyclist is captured on Versallies Blvd travelling towards St. John Street.  She then travelled on St. John Street and crossed over University Avenue, continuing west on St. Landry Street where she was captured on video at approximately 1:48PM.   Investigators are seeking information regarding a white newer model four door pickup truck, which was captured on video after Mickey Shunick travelled on both streets.  Anyone with information about the case of the pickup truck is encouraged to call the tips line at 337-291-8633 or Crime Stoppers at 337-232-TIPS.

Until a spokesperson for the investigation states that the cyclist captured on surviellance as been "positively" identified as Mickey ... I remain a skeptic.

What reason would a tired Mickey at 2:00 AM divert from the direct route that would take her home.

Police: Missing Louisiana student's bike found with damage

LAFAYETTE, La. – Police said Tuesday that the bike of a missing University of Louisiana at Lafayette college student was found under water in the Atchafalaya Basin, some 30 miles east of Lafayette, La., with damage to its rear tire.
During a news conference Tuesday, Cpl. Paul Mouton, a spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department, said the bike believed to be Michaela "Mickey" Shunick's was submerged in water, and its rear wheel was damaged. The bike is at the state crime lab for more testing, he said.

Mouton said police have not yet identified the drivers of three vehicles that police are calling persons of interest in the case. Police are still receiving tips about the vehicles and about "other items of interest," but Mouton did not release any further details.

The only visible damage to the bike belonging to missing Lafayette woman Mickey Shunick was the rear tire, according to Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton. During a media briefing around 3:35 this afternoon, he said the rim was bent. Fishermen found the bike Sunday at the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge Whiskey Bay exit. Mouton said her bike was submerged in the water off the bank of the Atchafalaya Basin. "Detectives are hopeful that forensic experts can find evidence on the frame, handle bars and handgrips that were recovered at the scene," said Mouton.

Investigators believe the bike was dropped off and not thrown from the bridge. Also, they believe the bike was dumped the morning Shunick went missing. Mouton says hopefully a forensic examination at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab will provide more specific information. Besides the bike, police have gathered other "items of interest," but are not naming those items.

BREAKING: Two vehicles ruled out in Shunick investigation

Lafayette police have ruled out two vehicles of interest in the investigation into Mickey Shunick's disappearance.

Police were able to identify the operators and occupants of an older model four-door car, as well as a white four-door pickup truck with a bed cover.

Missing Louisiana Student Mickey Shunick's Bike Suffered Significant Damage

Missing Louisiana student Mickey Shunick's recovered bike suffered significant damage to the rear tire, including a bent rim, authorities said today.

"We strongly believe that the person, or perpetrator, drove down to the edge of the water and dumped the bike into the water for it not to be found," Cpl. Paul Mouton of the Lafayette Police Department said.

That the bike was found damaged and dumped near a highway suggests Shunick might have been hit by a car, ABC News consultant and former FBI special agent Brad Garrett said.

"If her bike was hit by a vehicle...you may be able to tell from the damage whether it was intentional or not," he said. "[There] could be a wealth of information potentially gathered in addition to the location of the bike."

Garrett said the bike could have paint from the suspect's vehicle on it or DNA from Shunick or the suspect.

Keeping hope alive

Volunteers at Blackham Coliseum who had been working on the search effort to find missing Mickey Shunick were given a break. Just before Tuesday afternoon's news conference, a message posted on the Find Mickey Shunick Now Facebook page stated "the volunteer portion of the search effort is indefinitely suspended."

Tuesday marked the 10th day of the Shunick search. The 22-year-old UL student's bike was found on day eight, Sunday morning, under the Whiskey Bay bridge on Interstate 10.
Josh Coen, a 22-year-old friend of Shunick and social media coordinator for the volunteer effort, said the suspension was a unanimous decision from friends, family and other volunteers.

if she was hit by a car would there be some blood evidence somewhere on the street?

I have thought about that. But if she knew or felt some one was following her. Wouldn't she have gone into the lit up gas station we saw in the pictures and say someone is following me and call the police or her family to come get her.  Just a thought.

Okay what am I missing. If they are suspending all the volunteer help looking for Mickey that doesn't sound very hopeful to me.

He may have hit her bike she fell off and he took her.
We have no idea where this could have happened so where would they look for traces of blood.
Also if someone was after me i would have gone in the gas station and called the police.

Missing Louisiana Student Mickey Shunick's Bike Suffered Significant Damage

Missing Louisiana student Mickey Shunick's recovered bike suffered significant damage to the rear tire, including a bent rim, authorities said today.  ::snipping2::

"We strongly believe that the person, or perpetrator, drove down to the edge of the water and dumped the bike into the water for it not to be found," Cpl. Paul Mouton of the Lafayette Police Department said.

That the bike was found damaged and dumped near a highway suggests Shunick might have been hit by a car, ABC News consultant and former FBI special agent Brad Garrett said.

"If her bike was hit by a vehicle...you may be able to tell from the damage whether it was intentional or not," he said. "[There] could be a wealth of information potentially gathered in addition to the location of the bike."

assistance from a lot of other agencies (other sheriff's office, state police, FBI.) So there are a lot of

building there. From there, police don't know how far she made it, whether she turned on a side
street, etc. She hasn't been seen on any other footage that has been reviewed so far.

The back rim of the bike was damaged and the tire was dislodged. Forensics/state police crime
lab will be looking for any paint residue. They haven't given an exact time frame yet. It is a priority
for state police and they started working on it immediately, but are also taking their time to make
sure they don't miss anything.

home off Governor Miro but I thought that sex offenders could not live within so many miles of a school.

Raine: They're not 100 percent sure where she went after she was riding on St. Landry, if she turned
right or left onto Johnston or Congress, or cut through some other neighborhoods. Most bicyclists,
 including Mickey, avoid major routes, thinking they are more dangerous because of more traffic.

As to the sex offenders, Amanda would your agree that there are many sex offenders in the viciity of
the ryan street house because Aciadian Outreach used to have their headquarters in the neighborhood
accross (Mills Addition). Would you agree that tose numbers may be misleading, because many of the
homeless were using the Acadiana Outreach address (for a while anyway). There are still several in that
area (Mills) - but it's not what it appears. My impression is that you have to discount how many of the are
registered at those non profits because they received services from them and then those addresses have
 popped up on certain data bases. Including the sherffi's half way house that was in that nearby neighborhood,
etc.

Something was found in Whiskey Bay that has potential to be evidence, but police aren't talking specifics. Officers of the Lafayette Police Department were back on the street Wednesday afternoon along St. Landry between Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center and Blackham Coliseum looking for clues in the missing person case of Mickey Shunick.
 Five officers were on foot around 2:30 p.m. walking toward Coliseum Road via St. Landry and St. Landry Extended while another remained in his unit, lights flashing, to alert approaching drivers of the search in progress.

Missing Student Mickey Shunick's Bike Found: Serial Predator Responsible for Abduction? (VIDEO)

Missing college student Mickey Shunick is feared injured after her damaged bike was found by authorities 27 miles away from her last known location. Now police are looking for the drivers of vehicles captured by surveillance video footage; calling them vehicles of interest.

"The vehicles we're looking for are just vehicles of interest, not necessarily suspects," ABC News consultant Brad Garrett told the agency. "We know those vehicles were in the area and in the immediate area."

Volunteers are needed to help search for Mickey Shunick. A few crews went out this morning, but more are needed, said family spokesperson Christina Silvetti. Since volunteer searches were suspended yesterday only, there's some confusion as to whether volunteers are still needed. They are, and searches resumed this morning at 8:00. Volunteers are needed daily. Searches start at 8:00, and the last search party leaves Blackham Coliseum at 4:00 in the afternoon. Anyone who wants to volunteer should go to Blackham between 8:00 and 4:00. Searches will run daily.

Family Of Mickey Shunick React To Whiskey Bay Search, Private Investigator

Christina Silveretti, a public spokesperson for the family, says they were understandably nervous, as would any family in that situation, she says. When searchers came up with nothing of significance, though, Silveretti says the family breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Silveretti says they believe Shunick is still alive and are remaining confident that she will be returned to them safely.

Silveretti also confirmed the Shunick family has hired a private investigator. Despite media reports Wednesday afternoon that the family had just hired John Abdella, though, Silveretti says he has been employed by the family since the second day of Shunick’s disappearance.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Tonight, new developments in the disappearance of Mickey Shunick. Police now taking direct aim at a white pickup truck that was seen in surveillance video right around the time this beautiful, petite co-ed vanished while biking home in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Police have now accounted for and eliminated the other two vehicles seen in the footage, but they are still on the hunt for the driver of this, this newer model white four-door Chevy Z-71 pickup truck. Is the person at the wheel either Mickey`s kidnapper or a key witness?

She vanished 11 days ago, biking from a friend`s house at about 2 in the morning. The family believes this surveillance footage that you`ve been seeing shows Mickey on her bicycle.

The last image of her just before she vanished. What happened to her? Her frantic family wants to find out. They are doing everything they can.

A key break came just this past Saturday when fishermen discovered Mickey`s bike under a bridge. It was sticking up out of the river about 25 miles from where she was last seen. It was a bridge connected to Interstate 10, the back wheel of her bike, badly damaged. Does her bicycle hold the key, as well, to what happened to her?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I believe currently that the bike was dumped beneath the bridge and was not thrown from the bridge. A lot of things come into play, obviously, the amount of traffic. The I-10 is very heavily traveled and there is no shoulder on that particular bridge.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I-10 connects Lafayette with several large port cities to the east. Could a predator have used the massive artery as a getaway, taking Mickey with him?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: With an exit off of I-10 under the bridge. That`s how probably the bridge got thrown into the water and this person or persons who had basically, what seems like to me, kidnapped Mickey got back on I-10 and headed -- the bridge is eastbound.

Straight out to Mickey`s father, Tom Shunick. Mr. Shunick, again, our hearts go out to you. We want to be helpful keeping your daughter`s face out there. I know that this is crushing for her family and friends. Popular, popular girl, doing very well in school, with her life ahead of her, didn`t have anything to drink that night, according to her friends, was drinking water and was simply biking home, which should be a right of a citizen in this country. A female should be able to get on her bike and this is a travesty, and I know all of our viewers want to help you figure out what has happened.

Mr. Shunick, have the police told you anything? For example, we understand they have told the volunteer searchers back off, don`t continue searching. Do you know why they said that, sir?

SHUNICK (via phone): No, they didn`t say that. They just took a day off. The Texas EquuSearch, you know, people have all been out all day long in this 94-, 95-degree heat. And they just took a day off. They`ll start back up tomorrow, tomorrow morning.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Oh, good.

SHUNICK: That was just a foot search.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: All right. Well, we were under the impression -- maybe it was the wording, that essentially, the volunteers...

SHUNICK: I heard that a lot, but that`s what it was. Everybody -- a lot of people were under that impression, but they, in effect -- I mean, they just took a day off. And it was a foot search and not the search.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I`ll tell you what. Texas EquuSearch does an incredible job, and you`re fortunate to have them on your team.

SHUNICK: They`re amazing.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: They really are. We`re a friend of Tim Miller. He`s an amazing guy, and he had his own tragedy involving his own child. So it`s a cause he holds dear.

SHUNICK: I know.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Here`s the thing. Whoever dumped Mickey`s bike under that bridge, did they get on Interstate 10 and head East? That is one of the crucial questions.

Now, there are nearly 100 traffic cameras along I-10 in Lafayette, but get this. This is a horror. They`re live cameras for traffic. They don`t record. They`re just to observe the traffic patterns. All right?

Now, Lafayette is connected by I-10 to several small and mid-sized cities to the east. Baton Rouge and then all the way to Jacksonville, Florida.

I want to go out to Bill Warner, private investigator. If this major highway runs the width of the entire southern U.S. and was used as a getaway for a possible kidnapper, how do police proceed?

Because I can tell you that we called Baton Rouge P.D., the first big city to the east. And they said they were aware of this case, but they would not give us any information of what they might have done to try to find Mickey, referring us back to Lafayette P.D. -- Bill.

BILL WARNER, PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR: Yes. I`m here. Yes.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes.

WARNER: I think they really need to expand this -- this search for Mickey into Florida, because from the point where that -- that bike was found under the bridge, it`s only, like under four hours and you`re in Pensacola, Florida. I mean, it`s just a quick shot one way. You`re through four different states. You need to expand this search beyond Louisiana.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, why do you say Florida? I mean, we`ve got all these other cities between Lafayette and Jacksonville, Florida. Do you think that this individual, if there is this individual in this white pickup truck driving with Mickey, that he would go all the way to Florida? And if so, why?

WARNER: Well, I`m aware that there`s a lot of construction work along the Gulf Coast. And a lot of people that live in Florida work over in Louisiana, Mississippi. And they work during the week, and they come back on the weekends.

Mickey was basically, I feel, kidnapped on a Saturday night, a weekend. They need -- they need to look into this.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: All right. Police want to talk to the driver of a newer model white Chevy Z-71 pickup truck seen on this surveillance video.

Now, Holly Hughes, former prosecutor, how do cops go about finding this truck? Obviously, it`s great that they have a white Chevy pickup truck. Can they go through registration and get the thousands and try to whittle it down?

HOLLY HUGHES, FORMER PROSECUTOR: Well, they can, but that`s not going to be near as effective as what we are doing right now, Jane. Putting it out there in the media. They`re also going to visit all the local businesses, see if that truck pulled in and check credit-card receipts for the same time stamp that`s on the video.

They`ll try and narrow it down that way, because quite frankly, they just don`t have the manpower and resources to look through 32,000 registered white pickups. They`re depending on the public. They`re depending on people who were in the area.

And they will check all the surveillance cameras from local businesses to see if there`s a different angle. Can they get a partial license plate? If they get a partial license plate, that will narrow it down.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And remember, there was a woman who said in the same area somebody had the same exact -- she described a white, middle-aged man in the same exact kind of pickup truck, trying to pick her up, using very sexual language, offering to pay her for sex.

HUGHES: Right.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: So, my gosh, Joe Gomez, senior investigative reporter, KTRH News Radio, that to me dovetails: this pickup truck and then this experience this girl in this area had not so long ago.

JOE GOMEZ, SENIOR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER, KTRH: Yes, I mean, it`s hard not to, you know, connect the dots here, Jane. It sounds to me like there might be a sexual predator lurking out there in Lafayette, and the guy reportedly even admitted to this woman that he likes to drive around looking for girls and that she was, you know, even on a bicycle. Maybe this guy now finally snapped.

You know, it`s also interesting that Bloomington police in Indiana also had a case where a young college co-ed went missing after coming home from a night on the town, as well. So they`re investigating to see if those two cases might be connected, Jane.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Like maybe a drunk driver or someone who was speeding hit her or cut her off or saw her and was able to get her off her bike somehow or, you know? It seemed like a good idea at the time, and when they sobered up or whatever was, the next day they freaked out and didn`t know what to do.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Charlie Shunick, the sister of missing sister Mickey Shunick is hoping that somehow this was just a terrible accident and that accounts for Mickey`s bike being damaged.

Now, obviously, authorities are going over that bike with a fine- toothed comb. They`re taking whatever they can. If there`s paint on it from another vehicle, that would indicate that it was a car accident. There could be fingerprints; there could be DNA. We don`t have that information back yet, unfortunately.

Straight out to the phone lines. Cynthia, North Carolina, your question or thought?

CALLER: Yes, Jane. Hi, I love you. I just wanted to let you know that.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Thank you.

CALLER: Also, why did that -- her friend let her leave at 2 o`clock in the morning all by herself, being a girl and everything? Why didn`t she just sleep there?

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, first I want to go to Dr. Robi Ludwig, psychotherapist, because Brettly, her very dear friend, is hysterical, sobbing and crying. He feels -- I feel bad for him because he is just obviously wracked over the fact that he was the last person to see her.

But apparently Mickey enjoys riding. She actually has, I believe, a tattoo of a little bicycle. I mean, she`s an avid cyclist.

ROBI LUDWIG, PSYCHOTHERAPIST: I read that, that she had a tattoo on her ankle or somewhere.

Listen, you know, when you`re friends with somebody you don`t think they`re going to be in danger, especially if they`re not drinking, if they tend to live a healthy lifestyle. I imagine Mickey probably went home a lot via her bicycle late at night, and nothing ever happened. So we can`t blame the friend. The friend just assumed that she was -- she was safe. There was no reason to assume anything other than that, and of course, that`s not the case.

I think what we need to blame are, you know, the people who are out committing these crimes.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Exactly.

LUDWIG: But to blame a friend, you know, it`s just unfortunate timing.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I`ll tell you what upsets me is the fact that there are all these cameras. We have tons of cameras along the I-10, the very interstate that authorities fear she may have been taken on.

And remember, it goes through Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge has the distinction of being one of the top ten cities in the U.S. when it comes to human trafficking. Teenage girls are often the victim of human trafficking. And that would be, in a sense, a good scenario, in the sense that she would still be alive. That`s what we want to do is find Mickey alive.

But what absolutely infuriates me, Bill Warner, private investigator, is that we talked to transportation officials. There are cameras all the way up and down the I-10, but none of them, to our understanding, record.

So even if this had been caught, this vehicle had been seen, it wouldn`t have been recorded, and they say it`s because there are constitutional issues. I don`t really get it, because in New York City there`s cameras all over the place for terrorism reasons. I think, you know, killers, domestic criminals -- let`s put it that way -- are domestic terrorists.

WARNER: Well, I agree. But -- yes, I agree, but that happens all the time. I travel I-10 myself a lot. What you`ll find at all the rest areas are heavily cameraed. So they need to look at these rest areas from the Lafayette area all the way out to Pensacola, and you just don`t know. You might pick up something. There`s all kind of stuff.

You need to expand this. You need to look at -- you need to look at what happened in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where the -- the woman who disappeared, the soldier. She was at a bar right along 275. I mean, come on.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Our hearts go out to the Shunick family. We are going to stay on this story. We will not forget about your daughter. We want to find her.

Police confirm Rocky Mcgee interviewed in Shunick case

Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft, though he offered no details, confirms a tip The Independent received that detectives investigating the disappearance of UL student Mickey Shunick have interviewed 19-year-old Rocky James Mcgee in connection with the case.
 Craft directed all other questions to spokesman Paul Mouton.
 
“We have questioned many people in connection with this case,” Mouton says, declining to confirm whether Mcgee or anyone associated with him is still being questioned. “That information is part of the ongoing investigation and not public record,” he adds. “We have no one in custody. We have never had anyone in custody.”

Independent Article Fuels Speculation About Mickey Shunick Disappearance

LAFAYETTE, La. — An article from the Independent, a Lafayette-based weekly newspaper, is increasing speculation that foul play may have had something to do with the disappearance of Mickey Shunick, a University of Louisiana at Lafayette student who has been missing since May 19.
 
The article apparently confirms a tip that 19-year-old Rocky James McGee, who was involved in an accident two years ago in which a person was killed, has been interviewed by the Lafayette Police Department in connection with the disappearance of Shunick. McGee, who was 17 at the time, was charged with OWI in that accident, according to the Independent report.
 
However, Corporal Paul Mouton, a Lafayette Police Department spokesperson, would neither confirm nor deny that McGee was interviewed. Mouton, who sounded incensed on the phone when questioned about the report, said many people have been interviewed.

LAFAYETTE - Investigators searching for a missing college student in Lafayette say the number of tips they're receiving are slowing down enough that they're going to make some changes.

Starting tonight, the tip line at the Lafayette Police Department won't be staffed at all hours by investigators. Instead, an answering machine will record tips after normal business hours.

"The number of tips received by the Lafayette Police Department has decreased and it is no longer feasible to answer the tips line 24 hours a day," said Cpl. Paul Mouton.

Detectives will still answer the tip line during normal business hours, and check messages left on the machine

The white pickup seen on a surveillance video just after a missing UL student biked the same area has two distinguishing features: 18-inch alloy wheels and a Z71 sticker.

The problem for police, who would like to talk to the driver, is that a lot of trucks in the Acadiana area have the same identifying features.

The volunteer search for missing Lafayette woman Michaela "Mickey" Shunick resumed Thursday with fewer participants after the effort had been suspended for a day.

When volunteers gathered about 8 a.m. at Blackham Coliseum, the number of participants — which reached into the hundreds last week — seemed to dwindle, said volunteer and family spokeswoman Christina Silvetti.
"It was very, very slow today," Silvetti said.
The 4 p.m. volunteer search team departure from Blackham Coliseum was canceled when only one volunteer signed up. Two other volunteers signed in a few minutes later, picking up stacks of fliers to distribute

Miller can't stay in one place for too long, because his work is never done.

"We've got one in Meridian Mississippi that we're going to be going up on...it never ends."

EquuSearch searched both the land and water, using sonar equipment from both in and out of state. Even though Texas EquuSearch is leaving, they're leaving behind the hope that Mickey Shunick could be found."

Tim Miller knows the dangers of giving up on a case.

"I gave up on Elizabeth Smart, and guess what Elizabeth was certainly found alive. And so we'll hold on to that small, little sliver of hope."

Charlie Shunick hopes that volunteer efforts will ramp up now that EquuSearch is saying goodbye.

"We need footsoldiers, we need volunteers coming here doing things for us, we still need lots of food donations and everything so anything people can do like that would be awesome."

LAFAYETTE — Citing a drop in the number of tips received in the disappearance of Michaela “Mickey” Shunick, Lafayette police have opted to no longer man a dedicated tips line around the clock.

As of 7 p.m. Friday, an answering machine will record all tips regarding the Shunick case for calls directed to the tips line at (337) 291-8633, police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said Friday.

The tips line will continue to be answered Monday through Friday during normal business hours by detectives while messages left during weekends and after hours daily will be checked periodically by an investigator, Mouton said.

“The number of tips received by the Lafayette Police Department has decreased and it is no longer feasible to answer the tips line 24 hours a day,” Mouton said.

While police released no other information pertaining to the case Friday, investigators continue to seek information on a white, four-door Chevrolet Z-71 pickup that was seen on videotape traveling in the same direction on St. Landry Street as Shunick, Mouton said.

Police this week ruled out two other vehicles caught on videotape in the Shunick case. Authorities also ruled out any connection in the Shunick case to the disappearance of an Indiana woman who has been missing since June 2011.

Police have said that Shunick’s bicycle was damaged when fishermen found it Sunday at the Whiskey Bay exit off I-10 in the Atchafalaya Basin.

The rim of the rear wheel was bent and the tire was off the rim.

Investigators have said they do not believe the bicycle was thrown from the bridge. The bike has been sent to the State Police Crime Lab in Baton Rouge for processing.

Meanwhile, the number of volunteers enlisted in search efforts doubled Friday after the effort saw a lower-than-expected turnout Thursday, said Christina Silvetti, with Texas Equusearch, a nonprofit mounted recovery and rescue operation that is overseeing the search for the young woman.

Texas Equusearch joined the search for Shunick on May 23.

The volunteer search effort resumed Thursday after a one-day suspension, which was intended to give volunteers a break.

Silvetti said Friday that she expects the volunteer numbers to jump back up Saturday and Sunday when many people will be off work.

More volunteers are needed and the search effort headquarters remains at Blackham Coliseum, Silvetti said.
Silvetti also said Texas Equusearch members pulled out of Louisiana on Friday after conducting searches earlier in the day. The group left for another assignment in Mississippi, she said.

Silvetti said she will remain in Louisiana as a company representative and that she plans to coordinate volunteer search efforts.

The company normally does not stay on searches this long. “They did as much as they could with the tips and information they were given,” Silvetti said.

She said the group will return to the area if needed and if there are new leads.

Shunick's family remains positive as search enters week 3

LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - After more than two weeks of searching for a missing UL-Lafayette student, there is still no sign of the young woman.

Volunteer searchers continue to keep a look-out on Whiskey Bay, the area where Mickey Shunick's bicycle was found.

Friday, a Houston-based search and rescue team announced it is heading back to Texas headquarters until another break comes in the case. Still, all of the support from the community means a lot to the Shunick family, which continues to remain positive.

The private investigator tracking Mickey Shunick's disappearance says he has credible information about two people who could be involved in her disappearance. John Abdella says two people who don't know each other called him with almost identical descriptions.  a white female that was found by construction crews on the beach Thursday night. Officials tell us they are working to identify the body which had no head, legs or arms. The body did have a stab wound to the chest. Officials say it appears to be the body of a woman in her late teens or early twenties.  There are currently three young women missing from the south: Mickey Shunick from Lafayette, Jaren Lockhart from New Orleans and Brittany Nicole Wood from Alabama.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Tonight, as a new canine search team joins the hunt for beautiful, missing Mickey Shunick, a famous race car driver is doing everything he can to bring Mickey home; this beautiful, petite, college co- ed last seen riding her bike home from a friend`s house on May 18th.

Here is the last known video of Mickey just moments before she vanished -- see her there on the bike. Her bike later found under a bridge in the opposite direction of her house. Cops still on the hunt for this white truck that was seen in the very same area at the same time Mickey was biking home.

Investigators say somebody might have abducted her and then hopped on the I-10 freeway, a road stretching from coast to coast.

I went down to New Orleans this past weekend to investigate and talk to a retired cop. Listen to this.

SGT. BOBBY GUIDRY, RETIRED NEW ORLEANS POLICE: Well, with the I-10, like I said it runs -- it runs from Jacksonville all the way out to San Diego. So if anybody picked her up and put her in that car or truck, you know, there`s no telling where she could wind up. There are hundreds of cities she could be in now, but it runs the whole length of the country so that`s what the problem is.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He`s driving the 59. The contact happens made in front of him. Some cars avoiding that and he`s one of them in the 59 and up and over that three-foot high guardrail on the inside of Pocono.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hey, that thing is more than three foot wide. That was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, Buster, bravo for getting involved. This has been a heart-wrenching experience, obviously -- hellish for Mickey`s family. Why did you decide to jump in and what, specifically, are you doing?

BUSTER GRAHAM, RACE CAR DRIVER: Well, actually, I have an 18-year-old daughter and, you know, we were sitting down eating dinner one night and she knew I was going to get a lot of television coverage from my spectacular crash last year at Pocono. You know, she said, "Dad, you should put Mickey on the hood of your car, you know. It`s going to be seen by millions of people."

And it kind of went in one ear and out the other. And the more I thought about it -- I actually thought about it for about a day. And I just said, you know what; I`m going to go down to the Shunicks. See what they think about it --

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I have to say, I`m going jump in here for time. One thing that is so troubling about this case is that Mickey went missing by this major freeway. I spent some time on this exact highway in New Orleans, not far from where she disappeared, riding along with a retired cop and I asked him how cops should handle a case like this?

GUIDRY: We put out, you know, alerts and we try to send BOLOs out -- Be on the Look Out for -- and we notify everybody, all of the police departments and all the agencies that would border and all the state policemen all over the states that were anywhere around I-10 to be on the lookout for this white truck that`s a suspect.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I want to go out to Tom Shunick, Mickey Shunick`s father. Your daughter is missing; our hearts go out to you. I couldn`t stop thinking about it all weekend in New Orleans. It was just heart- wrenching.

Tom what are cops telling you right now about their search and what they found?

TOM SHUNICK, FATHER OF MICKEY SHUNICK: All I really know is just that. That they found the bike; if they found anything else, you know, and they`re not letting me know any of the details and I don`t want them to.

I don`t need to know that, you know. I`m not going to find her, and I might just let it slip by saying something. Other than finding the bike and a lot of the search teams out there I really don`t know too much more.

A private investigator hired by the family of Michaela "Mickey" Shunick said he is encouraged by clues in the case, and suggests that two individuals may have been involved in the Lafayette woman's disappearance.

John Abdella said Thursday he received a tip from a "good source" with descriptions of two people involved in Lafayette incidents similar to the Shunick case. The tip reinforces Abdella's sense that two people were involved in the University of Louisiana at Lafayette student's disappearance.

"I think it's two people involved," said Abdella, who has been sharing his results with local law enforcement and says he is "aligned" with police. "That's my opinion, though."

Abdella also says he has been given items thought to have been with Shunick the night she vanished.

"I'm in the process of establishing if they are, in fact, hers. We don't know yet," Abdella said.

Until a spokesperson for the investigation states that the blurry image captured on surviellance as been "positively" identified as Mickey ... I remain a skeptic.

Maybe the image ... as blurry as it is ... does reveal something to authorities/family ... something that would identify the cyclist as Mickey.

Thanks for posting the images.  I don't have a clue.

However ... I just just did my first scan yesterday.  I never knew I had a scanner attached to my printer.  My son/DIL/daughter had always willingly done the deed for me.  However ... yesterday when I made the request ... my son stated that I could do it myself.  He baby-stepped me through the process.  It was so simple.

Latest Update Special K-9's Help in Mickey Search, Final Volunteer Effort This Weekend

At first there were concerns the body found in Bay St. Louis could have been Mickey Shunick. But the family ruled that out early Friday, saying Mickey does not have any of the body piercings found on that female body.
 
"It's not my sister, so we need to keep searching, it's not Mickey," said Mickey's sister, Charlie Shunick.
 
After a brief scare, hope remains that Mickey is out there, alive and will be found. Charlie said volunteers will give one more push this weekend in the ground searches for her sister.
 
"I know she's still out there, we got to find her, something good is coming soon. So we just need people to, let's get a big rush, get everything knocked out so we can start looking other places, like we need those foot soldiers out here," she said.

As more body parts wash up on South Mississippi's beaches, officials now say they are 100 percent positive the torso found in Bay St. Louis Thursday belongs to Jaren Lockhart of New Orleans. The 22-year-old has been missing since Tuesday.

It's been two weeks since detectives found her bike. But nothing else. It's been about three weeks since she was last seen.

At one time volunteers, hundreds of them, were out looking for Mickey. Her relatives still believe she is alive, and they are waiting anxiously for her safe return.
 
"I thought I'd be back in Dallas by now. We'd find her after a couple of days, stay for a week or two," Charlie Shunick said.
 
Twenty-three days later, Charlie Shunick is still clad in a T-shirt bearing her sister's name, buttons that bring hope and handmade bracelets from children in the community. Her father, Tom, says he is having a hard time coming to grips with his daughter's disappearance

Michaela "Mickey" Shunick went missing on Rachael Taylor's wedding day.

While on her honeymoon in Jamaica, Taylor — a childhood friend of Shunick's older sister, Charlie — watched the story of the Lafayette woman's disappearance unfold through media reports and social networking. At the time, all Taylor could do to help was share the story about Shunick with her Facebook friends. By the time Taylor returned, her sister, Jamie, said she had used her own money to order 500 bracelets embroidered with "Find Mickey Shunick."

In less than two weeks, the sisters said they raised about $7,000.

New flyers are going up all over Lafayette as Mickey Shunick's family and friends refuse to let her face be forgotten. It's been a month since Mickey Shunick was last seen and three weeks since police found any evidence leading to her whereabouts. Since then, there have been no new leads.
Volunteers are still tirelessly making flyers, selling bracelets and T-shirts, and using social media to get the word out.

"I've never seen anything like it before with so many people getting together to help out," said Suzanne Ortego.

Ortego doesn't know Mickey, but as a mother of three, she can only imagine what the family is going through.

"We can't let her be forgotten. We can't stop the search. The family needs our support," said Ortego.

It's been one month since University of Louisiana- Lafayette student Mickey Shunick went missing.

Search efforts have scaled back, but family and friends say they have not given up. It has been a little more than a week since they shut down the massive volunteer searches that were based out of Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette.  They still have a smaller headquarters running out of a lafayette shopping center.

The Lafayette Police Department, working with the multi-jurisdiction task force, has made an arrest in connection with the case.  The suspect is from the Lawtell area.

LPD and Saint Landry Parish Sherriff Deputies are executing a search warrant in the Swords area. Saint Landry Parish Sherriff Bobby Guidroz says they are there investigating a major crime.   He would neither confirm nor deny that the operation was in connection with the Shunick case.

There will be a news conference at the Lafayette Police Department  on Friday, July 6, 2012, at 1:00 pm, regarding new information in the Mickey Shunick case. There will be no comment on the investigation until the press conference.  The investigation remains ongoing.

Shunick went missing after leaving a friend's residence in the 100 block of Ryan Street at approximately 2:00 am on, May 19th.  Lafayette Police later found Mickey Shunick's bike beneath the Whiskey Bay I-10 Bridge at Exit #127.

The Lafayette Police Department, working with the multi-jurisdiction task force, has made an arrest in connection with the disappearance of Mickey Shunick, according to The Daily Advertiser.

No information about the arrest has been released. Lafayette Capt. Paul Mouton said there will be no comment about the case until a press conference that he has arranged for 1 p.m. Friday.

However, the Advertiser is reporting on its website that officials have arrested Brandon Scott Lavergne from the Lawtell area of St. Landry Parish, and that a search warrant to search Lavergne's home has been secured.

KLFY-TV and the Daily Advertiser newspaper both quoted police sources as saying Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, has been arrested in the case. Neither media outlet reported what Lavergne is allegedly charged with.
Lavergne appears on the Louisiana State Police website as a registered sex offender.  According to the website, he was convicted in 2000 of aggravated oral sexual battery.

Latest Update Lavergne arrested on first degree murder charge

The warrant for Brandon Lavergne is for 1st degree murder and Aggravated Kidnapping. Right now, deputies in St. Landry are searching his home, and the Sheriff says the arrest was made in connection with the Mickey Shunick case. KATC's partner, The Daily Advertiser, was able to get a copy of the arrest affidavit. The report indicates the 33-year-old man was arrested at his Church Point home at 5:45 p.m. Police say Lavergne cooperated with police and his cell phone was seized.

Mickey Shunick's Mother Speaks One Month After Daughter's Disappearance

"Well I have a brief statement to Mickey just...in case."

With her daughter Charlene by her side, Nancy Shunick made a heartfelt statement to Mickey, and to those who may know of her whereabouts.

Nancy Shunick said, "We look for you everyday. Your friends look for you everyday. Hundreds and thousands of strangers have come from all over the state, from surrounding states, from all across the country. They've looked for you on foot, on atv, on horses, with dogs, with boats, and we will keep looking until we find you. Stay calm, stay strong, stay smart, and we will not stop looking."

On a night like any other here in Lafayette, Mickey Shunick was last seen riding her bike. Now, that night, at least for the Shunick family, has lasted a month. And mom Nancy is ready for answers.

"We haven't been told anything. It's not like C.S.I. I don't think 6 people stand around and the machine 'dings' and it tells you it's John Smith from Anytown," says Shunick.

As that monthlong "day" grows ever longer, all Nancy can do is hope for Mickey's safe return.

"If she could come home she would, because...all her animals are waiting for her. They're all hungry and they need some love. And only 'Mickey Love' will do.

For the Shunick family, it's been an agonizing three weeks. KATC sat down with Mickey's mother, Nancy Rowe, Sunday afternoon.

From what I gather, a poster at "tigerdroppings.com" started posting on May 26th about a guy his sister in law was seeing...the family was concerned.  As the Mickey Shunick investigation proceeded and the pictures of the trucks came out...pieces started falling into place that it might be the same guy that took Mickey.  Adam posted a link to the guy that was arrested today's record on May 26th.  He made a statement in the forum last week that an arrest in Mickey's case was coming soon...was almost banned over it.

There are probably more posts that were in other threads, these are from some of the ones I read tonight.

His sister-in-law was dating the guy. Read pg 22 in the thread link above. It talks about how he BURNED his Z71. Also, on May 26th, in this thread (http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/display.aspx?p=33718974) Adam4LSU talks about Brandon and posted a link to him. So, they must have been knowing it was him. Really interesting reading. Adam4LSU first posted something about Brandon just one week after Mickey went missing.

I won't go into the entire story because it's way too long and none of you will read.

Sister in law dating this dude who we thought had some issues he wasn't telling us. Found out the creep is a tier 3 registered sex offender with the charge of aggravated oral sexual battery. We confronted her and of course she is all..oh he was innocent and wrongfully charged blah blah blah..shes talking marriage and shite with this dude. Problem is she has 2 small kids. Is there a way to talk to the officer in charge of his case back in 2000' and find out if this charge was from his wife or little girl? His ex wife had all parental rights removed from him and had her daughters last name changed. He is legally prohibited from ever coming in contact with her. He was booked in Evangeline Parish.


I've never had to do shite like this before so I have no clue the 1st step we should take. The last 12 hours has been a shite storm on my wife's side of the family

they confronted her last night. She just finalized a divorce a month ago and has been with this guy for about 9 months now. She was a wreck after the divorce and the guy has been throwing money at her and treating her like a queen. shes blinded by love right now and flipped her shite on her dad last night when he confronted her. Shes known since day 1 apparently and defends him saying he was wrongfully accused and shite. She's been married since 18 and isn't the most mature 33 year old I've ever met. But still...how teh frick can you be wtih a guy and let him around your 3 year old daughter.

If her father and I have our way..this dude will never set foot around those kids again..

Update:
found out he was sentence the maximum for his offense. Sentenced 10 years and out on parole at 8 years. probation until 2010. Left voicemail for the actual detective in charge of his case back in 99' and his old probation officer. More to come shortly..

lol criticism from a message board does not upset me if that was what you were getting at. I had every mickey shunick thread deleted after that night. It was a dumb decision for me to ever put anything online but you have to understand..this was going on for 5 weeks and when we finally got the news...I had to just vent to something or someone   
As soon as I came to my senses I deleted everything.

I just saw the picture on the news and I am in shock. I talked to this guy for about an hour a couple of months ago offshore. I was catching a boat from an Apache platform(SMI 268 I think) and talked to him in the galley. He was the shift mechanic and worked for Wood group. This was right before the abduction. Seemed like a nice guy, but you could tell he was "throwed off".

I had forgotten I started that thread   at the time I didn't fricking care if he saw it..in fact I wanted him to.
I know the details that led up to the arrest, what I don't know is what extra stuff they have found. At this point I'm as much in the "know" now as all of you..minus the fact that I have been told that with what they have(which I don't know)..he will be in prison for the rest of his life.

LAFAYETTE — A St. Landry Parish man was booked Thursday on first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping counts in the May 19 disappearance of 22-year-old Mickey Shunick, police said.

Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, a registered sex offender, was booked at 5:45 p.m. Thursday while detectives searched his mobile home near Lawtell in rural St. Landry Parish.

Lafayette police confirmed Lavergne’s arrest was in connection with the Shunick case, but declined to discuss any further details until a news conference scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said his office assisted Lafayette police in the search of Lavergne’s home at 143 Elaine Lane near Lawtell.

“We are looking for physical evidence related to the Mickey Shunick case,” Guidroz said.

The sheriff said investigators arrived at the mobile home about 2 p.m. and were expected to remain on site at least until 11 p.m. He declined to discuss what evidence might have been found.

Detectives were seen carrying three large bags off the site about 8:22 p.m. and placing them in the back of an SUV.

Lavergne was required to register as a sex offender following a conviction in 2000 on an aggravated oral sexual battery charge, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office sex offender registry.

He was accused of tying, blindfolding and sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman while he was stationed as a soldier at Fort Polk, according to a news story that was published in The Advocate at the time.

22 year old Mickey Shunick was last seen at about 2:00 am (May 19) riding a black and gold Schwinn Cutter bicycle with glittery gold handlebars from a friend's home in the Saint Streets area of Lafayette. She was riding back home to the area near Ambassador and Congress, but never made it home and hasn't been seen since.

She is 5'1″ tall, weighing about 115 pounds, has shoulder length curly blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a small tattoo of a bicycle on her right outer ankle and a nose ring on her left nostril.

She was last seen wearing a pastel multicolored striped shirt, light wash denim skinny jeans, and silver ankle boots. She was also carrying a light brown leather backpack, a black and yellow Vera Bradley wallet, a black Verizon slider phone and a small pink container of pepper spray.

Brandon Lavergne appeared before a judge in a video conference this morning. Lavergne will be represented by a public defender. When asked by the judge if he could afford a lawyer, Lavergne responded with, "Not in a case like this, sir." In addition, Lavergne will be placed in critical care, which sheriff's deputies say is to protect Lavergne from other inmates. Law enforcement sources assert that that evidence led investigators to registered sex offender Brandon Scott Lavergne, 33, previously convicted of tying, blindfolding and sexually assaulting a teenager while stationed at Fort Polk near Leesville.

He was arrested Thursday afternoon on first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping warrants signed by 15th District Judge Marilyn Castle. No bond is set on the capital charge; a $250,000 bond is set on the kidnapping charge.

SHUNICK INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The Sheriff's Department in San Jacinto County, Texas confirms to TV-10 that a white pick-up truck, matching the description in the Shunick disappearance, was found burned in their county on June 14th. Without trying to deter from Mickey's case, this is one example of when releasing information to the public helps catch these criminals and predators.  Many people are wondering why a sketch has not been released in the Kyron Horman case when there were several witnesses who saw the man that Kyron left Skyline Elementary with.  Now that case is cold and a predator is still on the loose who will almost assuredly go after another child.  ::MonkeyMad::

LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — The Lafayette Police Department held a press conference on Friday, July 6 to update the public in regards to the arrest made in the Mickey Shunick investigation. Police Chief Jim Craft detailed how Brandon Scott Lavergne was identified as a suspect, but provided little details regarding why he was charged with First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Kidnapping.

“I must caution all of you that although an arrest has been made in this case, much work is left to be done,” Chief Craft said. “On May 19 the Shunick family reported Mickey missing… On May 25 video evidence was recovered from a Lafayette government building that captured Mickey on her bike.

“Several vehicles were also captured on the video and broadcast to the public. All the vehicles of interest were ruled out except for a white, Chevrolet Z 71 pickup truck. The driver, as well as the vehicle, was never identified, nor did anyone come forward.

“On May 26, Mickey’s bike was located under the Whiskey Bay Bridge with damage to rear tire, consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

“On June 14, investigators received information from a concerned citizen regarding a white Z 71 pickup that may be involved in Mickey’s disappearance. The vehicle in question was registered to Brandon Lavergne.

“Further investigation revealed that this truck was reported stolen in Montgomery County, Texas and later located in San Jacinto County, Texas on May 21. The truck had been burned. It was just days after the truck was located that the police had released photographs of that vehicle being a vehicle of interest. Based on information and surveillance detectives were able to positively identify the truck that traveled directly behind Mickey in the video as belonging to Brandon Lavergne. Investigators were also able to place Brandon Lavergne in and around the location of where the bicycle was located beneath the whiskey

Thursday July 5, Louisiana State Police conducted a traffic stop on Lavergne at the intersection of I-10 and I-49. He was arrested on an unrelated warrant and he was transported to the Lafayette Police Department. During questioning Lavergne was questioned and requested an attorney. He refused to cooperate with our investigation any further.

“At that time he was charged with the Aggravated Kidnapping and First-Degree Murder of Mickey Shunick.

“We will not rest until we fully understand what happened to Mickey,” he concluded.

The Lafayette Police department says the suspect in the death of Mickey Shunick has refused to cooperate with the investigation.   

Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft says evidence in the case suggests Shunick is dead.  However, he says, her body has not been found.  Shunick disappeared in May while riding her bike home in Lafayette.

Craft says a burned truck that was discovered near Houston, Texas in June was later found to be registered to the suspect in this case, Brandon Lavergne.

Craft says, after the arrest on Thursday, Lavergne was brought the Lafayette Police Department and, during initial questioning, Lavergne requested an attorney and refused to answer any further questions.   

Lavergne, 33, is an offshore worker. He had been working offshore for the past two weeks just prior to his arrest on Thursday, police said.

Surveillance video from a business showed Mickey Shunick riding her bike home. It also showed a white truck in the area at the time. Craft says that police were able to identify the truck found in Texas as being the same truck shown in that surveillance video.

Shunick's bicycle was found in a swampy area at the Whiskey Bay exit of Interstate 10 eight days after she disappeared. Police said that the bicycle had damage to it that is consistent with it being struck by a vehicle.

Craft says his detectives have evidence that shows Lavergne was in the Whiskey Bay near the time that bike was discovered. "We can place his vehicle in that area at that time," Craft said. He would not give further details.

However, Lavergne's cell phone was confiscated at the time of his arrest.  Police frequently use cell phone records to determine if a suspect's cell phone was in contact with cell phone towers in a particular area at a particular time.

Craft says Shunick's body has not been found but evidence in the case indicates she is dead.  He would not elaborate.

At the time of his arrest, Lavergne was driving a white pickup that is the same model as the one he previously owned. Craft says records show Lavergne purchased another truck, almost identical to the first, after Shunick disappeared.

"We will not rest until we find out what happened to her," Craft said.

I couldn't hear all of the questions asked at the Press Conference, but have read quite a few comments about a possible bite mark on the suspects hand, possibly bad enough that he needed medical treatment.

Siding being removed off Lavergne's house

According to deputies in St. Landry Parish, they are right now removing the skirting from around Lavergne's trailer. The spokesperson tells us neighbors tipped them off. Neighbors told them Lavergne recently replaced all that same siding around his house, and they were checking underneath for more evidence.

This is the release from the Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft in regards to an arrest made in Mickey Shunick Case:

The Lafayette Police Department would like to extend its appreciation to the Shunick Family, all of the law enforcement agencies involved in this investigation, countless volunteers, private business entities, and the public that have assisted in the search and continue to be there as this investigation remains ongoing. I must caution all of you that although an arrest has been made in this case, much work remains to be done.

Working with our Federal, State and local partners, the Lafayette Police Department has arrested Brandon Scott Lavergne and charged him with 1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Kidnapping. Lavergne is believed to be responsible for the disappearance of Michaela "Mickey" Shunick.

On May 19th of this year, the Shunick family reported Mickey's disappearance. She had not returned home, missed her brother's graduation from high school, had notified no one of her location, and did not respond to calls made to her cell phone.

On May 25, video evidence was discovered from an LCG facility that captured Mickey on her bike. Several vehicles were observed in the same video and broadcast to the public as vehicles of interest. All of the vehicles of interest were ruled out except for a white Chevrolet Z71 pickup. The driver as well as the vehicle was not ever identified nor did anyone come forward.

On May 26, Mickey's bike was located under the Whiskey Bay Bridge on I-10 with damage to the rear tire consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

On June 14, Investigators received information from a concerned citizen, regarding a white Z71 that may be involved in Mickey's disappearance. The vehicle in question was registered to Brandon Lavergne. Further investigation revealed that the truck was reported stolen in Montgomery County, Texas and later located in San Jacinto County, Texas on May 31st. The truck had been burned just days after police released photographs of the truck as a vehicle of interest.

Based on information and surveillance detectives were able to positively identify the truck that traveled directly behind Mickey in the video as belonging to Brandon Lavergne. Investigators are also able to place Brandon Lavergne in and around the location of where the bicycle was located.

On Thursday, July 5, Louisiana State Police conducted a traffic stop on Lavergne near the intersection of I-10 and I-49. He was arrested on an unrelated warrant and transported to the Lafayette Police Department.

During questioning at Lafayette PD, Lavergne requested an attorney and has refused to cooperate any further with the investigation. At that time, he was additionally charged with the aggravated kidnapping and murder of Mickey Shunick.

This has been a very difficult ordeal for the Shunick Family and we thank them for their continuous cooperation, encouragement, and support in our attempts to determine what happened to Mickey. We want the family to know that we will not rest until we can fully know what happened to her. We continue our efforts to locate and bring Mickey home.

This type of case can overwhelm one agency. A tremendous amount of time, equipment, and resources have been put into this investigation. I would be remiss in my duties if I did not acknowledge and thank all of the agencies and private businesses that have been with us from day one of this case: LPSO, ULPD, Lafayette City Marshal's Office, LSP, SMSO, SLSO, Iberia SO, Iberville SO, East Baton Rouge SO, Acadia SO, Patterson PD, FBI, US Marshal's Service, LSP Crime Lab, Acadian Crime Lab, C & C Technologies, and Holbrook Media. It is these types of partnerships that have made an arrest possible in this matter.

I will take questions at this time but I want to caution you that because the investigation is on-going, there is a lot of information that we will not be able to divulge or discuss.

Super OT but I gotta ask...Labubske, is that your baby dog?  He/She's beeeyoutifull!  Love ALL animals but real partial to big baby boy dogs!  I've had 2 big boys and 1 Miniature Schnauzer girl.  They lived to be over 11 and 13 each and we miss them terribly!  To keep me from being so sad about it I just have to believe that they are Heaven protecting, loving and being loved by our dearly departed!

Thanks melisb...This is Luna.  She is the best dog ever...oh so gentle and sweet.  She trained easy and is so smart.  I love her so much.  I will be devastated when she goes...but, like you I believe that she will go to a doggie Heaven...it makes it a bit easier.  She is a year and a half.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Department tells TV-10's Renee Allen that the search at Brandon Lavergne's property is over. They are taking the police tape down and leaving. Some units may remain on the property but the search is over.

Our little Mickey put up a fight. the car dealer lady that he tried to buy a truck from said that his arms and hands were covered in wounds. she phoned police right away. not sure if they were onto him already at that point. either way, they've got him

From Part 1 a couple of things that stood out to me;

Lavergne had a court date scheduled to try to remove him from the sex offender registry, even though it was shown as part of his plea agreement in the earlier case, his claim was at the time of his crime the "lifetime" listing was not law.

Lavergne had altered his Driver's License to hide the fact that he is a registered sex offender.

A retired policeman that was interviewed about 40 days ago in relation to Mickey's case and gave a profile of the suspect in the case, described many things that fit the suspect charged with Mickey's kidnapping and murder.

Part 2

A blue tent like cover is visible in the backyard (where the red car is) in this video.  The tent like cover was not visible in other recent video so I do believe that it had been placed there by investigators.  Notice also that the red car was moved around.  There also appeared to be either another (white) crime scene vehicle or some kind of white cover in the background behind the blue tent like cover.  It had been stated on Facebook that they were digging up his yard, but someone else stated they couldn't see where they'd done any digging...so maybe it was in the backyard where we couldn't see?

The sign at the Corner Pantry that stirred mixed emotions in the community, was taken down today at the request of the Shunick family.

We appreciate all of the heartfelt emotions shared on this page and the support given by people from near and far in this ongoing effort to bring our Mickey home, and we can't say that enough.
Now while it is understandable that negative emotions can be expressed in this kind of situation, please remember to keep everything we say POSITIVE in a public forum such as this. Regardless of what comes f...rom the police press conference later today, we have to recognize the truly amazing show of love and support shown by every person involved in this great effort. We have seen this love in the hundreds of searchers laboring for hours in the hot Louisiana summer, in the mass amounts of food and drinks donated to feed them, in the thousands of flyers put up across Louisiana and the rest of the country, and in the countless people we have met during these 48 days who had no clue who Mickey Shunick was before May 19th but nevertheless have given up a portion of their lives and their heart to reunite a young girl with her family. The main thing we need to do now is utilize that amazing wealth of love in order to overlook the unconfirmed rumors and assumptions rather than venting our anger over the internet, or elsewhere. Let's KEEP THE FAITH and stay positive and most of all LET'S BRING MICKEY HOME

He cautioned that while an arrest has been made, much more investigation is ahead. "Lavergne is believed to be responsible for the disappearance of Mickey Shunick," Craft said.

Craft said surveillance video that picked up Shunick shortly after she left a friend's house on May 19 led them to a white Chevrolet pickup that was seen in the same area. Police put out a community appeal seeking to identify the vehicle and its driver, but no one came forward.

A break in the case came June 14, Craft said, when a tip came into a phone hotline set up after the student's disappearance. Craft would not go into detail on how officers were led to a white pickup truck found burned in San Jacinto County, Texas, on May 31. But he said the truck was registered to Lavergne and had been reported stolen in Montgomery County, Texas.

"Based on information and surveillance, detectives were able to positively identify the truck that traveled directly behind Mickey in the video as belonging to Brandon Lavergne," Craft said. "Investigators were also able to place Brandon Lavergne in and around the location of where the bicycle was located."

Craft said Lavergne was arrested Thursday after a state police traffic stop on Interstate 10 on an unrelated warrant. Craft said Lavergne had tampered with his driver's license so that it no longer indicated he is a registered sex offender. Sex offenders in Louisiana are required to have driver's licenses that display a code identifying them as such.

The state's online list of registered sex offenders says Lavergne was convicted of aggravated oral sexual battery in 2000. He was released in 2008.

Craft said Lavergne declined to cooperate with police. He was booked in the Shunick case and was being held without bond on Friday.

"We want the family to know that we will not rest until we can fully know what happened to her. We continue our efforts to locate and bring Mickey home," Craft said.

The story of a murdered 21-year-old University of Louisiana student has multiple ties to Texas, and the alleged killer had apparently been in Montgomery and San Jacinto Counties.

On May 18, Mickey Shunick and a friend attended a concert at the Artmosphere in Lafayette. Afterward, Shunick returned to the friend’s home and then left on her bicycle, headed for her family’s home. Shunick visited a Taco Bell in the early hours of May 19, and then the 5-foot 1-inch, 110 pound co-ed seemingly vanished into thin air. Her family reported her missing later that day.

Police investigating the case found security video from a business that showed a white Chevrolet Z-71 pickup was following Shunick. Two other vehicles captured by video cameras were located and their occupants ruled out as suspects. Police released video of the white pickup to the public on May 25, hoping it might prompt someone to come forward with information. The following day, on May 26, Shunick’s bicycle was found along I-10, partially submerged under the Whisky Bay Bridge. Damage to the rear tire indicated the bike was struck from behind by a vehicle. Sonar was used and divers from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Dive Team searched the area without finding any additional clues.

The same day the bicycle was found, the white Chevrolet Z-71pickup now believed to have been used in the crime, was reported stolen in Montgomery County, Texas by the truck’s owner, a 33-year-old registered sex offender named Brandon Scott Lavergne, of Lawtell, Louisiana. At the time, Texas authorities had no reason to suspect anything sinister. On May 31, the truck was found burned in San Jacinto County.

In June, investigators called in Special K-9’s, a search group based in The Woodlands, to scour the area around Whisky Bay in search of remains. Jana Bickel, the group’s founder, said they took six of their trained dogs who searched the land and water in the area. The dogs alerted on a few spots on the land and one on the water, but none were productive. The dogs are trained to distinguish the scent of human remains from that of animals, Bickel said. However, she said, they also detect blood and since the area is a sort of fishing camp, they may have alerted on where a fisherman cut himself or some other injury that drew blood. Therefore, the hits may or may not have been related to Shunick.

Police called Special K-9’s back to Louisiana recently and asked them to search the area where Shunick disappeared, around Blackburn Coliseum. Two handlers used four dogs on that attempt, which was also fruitless. Another Texas-based group, Texas Equusearch, assisted with the search effort in Louisiana as well, searching for eight days in a row. Both groups have seen great success and their assistance is sought by law enforcement and desperate families in and outside the United States. But this search was a disappointment for both teams.

On Tuesday, Lafayette police stopped Lavergne on I-10 near I-49 and arrested him on a charge related to his registration as a sex offender. The offshore oilfield worker had just returned from a two-week offshore rotation and was driving a different white truck almost identical to the one he reported stolen in Texas.
Lavergne has since been charged with the first-degree Murder and Kidnapping of Mickey Shunick.

To date, Shunick remains missing. Louisiana authorities are releasing little information, except that they believe they now have enough evidence to support a case against Lavergene. In a press conference, they stated they believe Lavergne was driving around Lafayette in search of a victim on the night of Shunick’s disappearance. They say he found that victim when he allegedly spotted and abducted Shunick a little before 2 a.m., between St. Landry Street and Blackburn Coliseum.

Lavergne has refused to answer investigators’ questions. He told the judge he cannot afford an attorney, so he will be assigned a public defender.

MORET: Tonight an arrest in the case of missing Mickey Shunick. Police have charged 33-year-old Brandon Laverne, a convicted sex offender, with first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in connection with Mickey`s disappearance.

The Louisiana college student vanished after leaving a friend`s House in the middle of the night on May 19. Surveillance video shows Mickey biking home that night. Cops found her bike beneath the bridge about a week later and say there`s damage to indicate it was hit by a car.

The same video shows three cars in the area at the time Mickey was last seen. Cops were trying to track down information about those three cars, including a white Chevy Silverado pickup truck. And it was this video that helped to crack the case.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Based on information and surveillance, detectives were able to positively identify the truck that traveled directly behind Mickey in the video as belonging to Brandon Laverne. Investigators were also able to place Brandon Laverne in and around the location of where the bicycle was located beneath the Whiskey Bay Bridge.

MORET: Mike Brooks, HLN law-enforcement analyst. Do they have enough evidence to charge this guy?

BROOKS: Well, apparently so. I mean, he`s been -- he`s been locked up. And you need probable cause to do that. And it sounds from the chief that they are -- have put together a pretty good case before they -- before they arrested him.

But they did serve a search warrant at his home on July 5. What additional evidence they got there we don`t know. But it sounds like they were able to put him there at that bridge.

Also, they, through surveillance videos and other evidence able to say that he was the vehicle behind her. And I guarantee you that that`s the case and there were some damage to her bike. There`s probably also some damage to his car that they were able to link up also to that bicycle, Jim.

MORET: Judge Mary Ann Gunn, host of "Last Shot with Judge Gunn," joining us by Skype. What`s really troubling in this case, certainly as a parent, looking at this. It went from a missing persons case to now we see murder charges against -- being leveled against this guy, or at least that`s the arrest charges. That`s very troubling.

GUNN: Absolutely. Absolutely. It`s very -- there`s obviously things that the police know that we don`t. Because right now she`s disappeared. And they have found probable cause that evidently is sufficient to withstand a ruling of no bond to issue against this man.

And as -- Lafayette`s a wonderful, warm place. I`ve been there. And it`s quiet sleepy college town. And it`s got to be very tragic for the citizens of that town.

MORET: And no body but still a murder investigation now, which means they clearly have information they`re not telling us.

GUNN: Absolutely they do. And I imagine that they`re trying to get that information possibly to the family so that -- there`s so much we don`t know. Let`s hope that they don`t...

Tonight, we're hearing for the first time from Brandon Lavergne's family. His mother, Cynthia Lavergne, releasing a statement to KATC saying,

"I would like to offer my condolences to the Shunick family. I also would like to have closure. I know I'm sorry is never enough however, it is all I have to offer at this moment. I am learning about this case as everyone else is, one newscast at a time, one facebook post at a time, and one phone call at a time."

My name is Cynthia Lavergne. I am the Mother of Brandon Scott Lavergne. There may never be a good or appropriate time for me to send this message but for me this seems to be the time. Brandon Scott Lavergne is my son however, he is an adopted son. I adopted Brandon at birth to give him the family he deserved. I am not saying this to minimize the relationship with my son.. I'm stating this so that no one else has the chance to say or reveal what is rightfully mine to do. I would like to offer my condolences to the Shunick family. I also would like to have closure. I know I'm sorry is never enough however, it is all i have to offer at this moment. Hey , my name is Joshua Lavergne. I'm am the brother of Brandon Scott Lavergne. I would like to say I'm sorry for what the Shunick family has gone through. I was and still am one of the many residents of Acadiana that wants to see this young woman brought home. I'm sure there are people wanting to hear from us.. in fact I'm 100% sure since we are getting calls from the media(TV and Newspapers). We had a neighbor visited by the TV stations to question our neighbors as well. We have no answers. If we had more information than what ya'll have we would gladly give this to you. We do not condone anything that has gone on and are in shock that someone we call family would be arrested for such a sick crime. We know as much as everyone else on here does. We have not been called in for questioning by any agency but would cooperate to the fullest if we were. We are angry as well but we can't lash out the way people want us to. We are still holding on to hope that she comes home and attempting to hold on to hope that this is all a nightmare and we will wake up from it soon. I'm going to end this by saying once again, I'm truly sorry and would give anything to be able to have answers but I don't. My deepest regards and sympathies for everyone involved.

I can tell you without a doubt that he rented a car in Spring, TX on the morning of 5/31 at 9:51 am and returned it on the afternoon of 6/4. He rented the car through on insurance theft claim through his personal auto insurance. And yea, the police aware he did rent the car.

I work for said rental company in Houston. When I heard his truck was found burned I searched rental history for his name. Found it immediately.
