Los Angeles (CNN) -- Rodney King, whose beating by Los Angeles police in 1991 was caught on camera and sparked riots after the acquittal of the four officers involved, was found dead in his swimming pool Sunday, authorities and his fiancee said. He was 47.

Police in Rialto, California, received a 911 call from King's fiancee, Cynthia Kelly, about 5:25 a.m., said Capt. Randy DeAnda. Responding officers found King at the bottom of the pool, removed him and attempted to revive him. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, DeAnda said.

There were no preliminary signs of foul play, he said, and no obvious injuries on King's body. Police are conducting a drowning investigation, DeAnda said, and King's body would be autopsied.

"His fiancee heard him in the rear yard," he said, and found King in the pool when she went outside.

Kelly was a juror in King's lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles in 1994.

King's beating after a high-speed car chase and its aftermath forever changed Los Angeles, its police department and the dialogue on race in America.

His death at age 47 is being treated as an apparent drowning and there are no signs of foul play, but Capt. Randy De Anda said autopsy results would be needed to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The autopsy is set for today.

De Anda said King was only in the water three to four minutes between the time his fiancee called 911 and when officers arrived and pulled him from the water. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m.

Rodney King services — so sweet and so sad
The man the world knew as Rodney King, police beating victim, got a family send-off that was both dignified and emotional.

King's mother, Odessa, and some of his siblings insisted on something simple and low-key, consistent with their Jehovah's Witness beliefs. That service lasted barely 20 minutes, with an open casket and brief Scripture readings. King's mother left for a relative's home in Altadena when it ended.

King's daughter, Dene, envisioned a grand public tribute in a 1,200-seat pavilion, one that reflected the family's affection for the man they called "Glen" and honored the role of "Rodney" in history. That funeral was preceded by a news conference and featured activist Al Sharpton.

The services were both dignified and emotional. But the hours between them were upbeat and down-home.

The gathering served as a family reunion of sorts for the dozens of Coles, Powers, Passmores, Baileys, Dennisons, Wades, Duncans, Watsons and Kings — folks reflecting the roots and branches of one man's far-flung family tree.

Police: Rodney King death ruled accidental
August 23, 2012

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Rodney King had been drinking and was on drugs when he plunged into a swimming pool and accidentally drowned in June, a coroner's report released Thursday concluded.

The report confirmed a previous police conclusion that King died by accident, and the case will be closed, Rialto police Capt. Randy DeAnda said.

"It concludes our investigation," he said. "Basically, our investigation revealed the same conclusion and now that we have the toxicology, it basically reinforces that."
