Ballroom matchups: 'Dancing With the Stars' pros, all-star pairings revealed

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The new, all-star season of "Dancing With the Stars" is still six weeks away, but fans of the ballroom bash now have a better idea of what to expect when those oh-so familiar hopefuls hit the dance floor. On Monday morning, "Dancing"' followed up the recent star-studded cast announcement by unveiling which professional hoofers will serve as the celebrities' all-important partners.

Here's the list of pairings:

Reality star Bristol Palin will once again dance her season 11 partner Mark Ballas.

- Olympic gymnast and past "Dancing" winner Shawn Johnson, who moved with Ballas in season eight, will dance with Derek Hough.

- For actress Kirstie Alley, all-stars will offer a second chance with her season-12 partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

- Retired NFL running back Emmitt Smith, who danced with Cheryl Burke in season three, will dance with her again.

- Actor Gilles Marini danced with Burke in season eight, and now he'll try for the mirror-ball trophy with Peta Murgatroyd.

- When actor and singer Drew Lachey danced, and won, in season two, he also did so with pro Burke. This time he'll move alongside Anna Trebunskaya.

- The first time actress Pamela Anderson participated in the competition, back in season 10, she danced with pro Damian Whitewood. This time she'll dance with Tristan MacManus.

- Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno won with past pro Julianne Hough in season four, but he'll perform with Karina Smirnoff in all-stars.

- Indy 500 champ Helio Castroneves took top honors with Hough in season five. He'll try for a repeat with Chelsie Hightower.

- Actor and 'N Sync member Joey Fatone will dance with his season-four partner Kym Johnson.

- Actress Kelly Monaco won with pro Alec Mazo is "Dancing's" first season. She'll dance with Val Chmerkokvskiy for all-stars.

- In season eight, Melissa Rycroft danced with pro Tony Dovolani. She'll do the same for all-stars.

On first glance...I have to go with Shawn and Derek.  I LOVE to watch Derek dance.  And Shawn is one of my fav athletes.

This should be fun to watch...meaning all of them!

When I first looked at the lineup I liked Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd.  He was really good that season.  The last few dances he was working with a bad shoulder which required surgery I believe.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Hope Solo is LYING ...
I Never Slapped Her

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is adamant ... he NEVER slapped Hope Solo across the face behind the scenes at "Dancing with the Stars" ... despite allegations she made in her new book.

TMZ has learned ... Maksim was absolutely shocked when he heard about the "completely false" story in Hope's book, "Solo: A Memoir of Hope" ... in which the Team USA soccer star claims Maksim pulled a Rick James while trying to put her head in the correct position for a dancing move.

The two were partners on "DWTS" in 2011.

Mad Maks quits
‘What else do I have to do there after 15 seasons?’

Maksim Chmerkovskiy is leaving the ballroom.

The hot-tempered hoofer says he will not return to “Dancing With the Stars” after his current contract expires at the end of next year.

“What else do I have to do there after 15 seasons?” he tells The Post. “It makes total sense. The audience can’t expect for me to want to stick around, and the producers can’t expect for me to want to stick around.”

Maks — who re-teams with Kirstie Alley for the show’s all-star season on Monday — says he plans to pursue acting and possibly a reality show with his brother, Val.

I turned off the TV before BP performance.  I will watch DWTS, until she is up.
She has her mommy's tea party votes. That stinks, BP can not stand on her own.

'Dancing With the Stars' recap: 'Let the intensity commence!'

Helio Castroneves and Chelsie Hightower reach for greatness during their fox trot. (Adam Taylor / ABC)

It’s a very special evening, ballroom fans. The All-Stars season is finally upon us! And this “celebration of the best of the best” is like a who’s who of “Dancing With the Stars”-dom. Former champions and also-rans! Controversial figures! Boy banders! Olympians!

Each couple performed a fox trot or the cha-cha. Though with so many shiny stars swirling and twirling around in the coveted Mirrorball trophy’s glittery orbit, it was hard to focus on just one. As head judge Len Goodman said, what was good has to be great, and what was great has to be exceptional.

There’s even been a tweak to the judges’ scores, allowing for half-points to each paddle score “just to give it a balance.” Who emerged as early favorites during this season premiere and who fell short of expectations? In the words of newly minted Emmy-winner Tom Bergeron (whose best reality-TV show host award was much deserved), “Let the intensity commence!”

‘Dancing With the Stars: All Stars’ eliminates its first contestant
September 26, 2012

“Dancing with the Stars’” first all-star elimination begins with Emmy-winning host Tom Bergeron noting that previous night’s show was so packed – 13 competitors, so many commercials – they did not have time to ask each of the celebs why they decided to return for another shot at the Mirror Ball Trophy.

So that’s how they’re going to fill two hours tonight!
 ::snipping2::
And so the two hours continued. The show’s three judges – none of whom are Nicki Minaj, Usher, Mariah Carey, Britney, or making $18 million a year – want to see Emmitt and Cheryl Burke perform the board-leading cha-cha-cha again. So they do. They should just give them the Mirror Ball Trophy and be done with it. But then we’d have no place for Pitbull to perform a tune from Global Warming, and Justin Bieber to deliver a heartfelt “As Long As You Love Me” while performing Airline Industry Ramp Personnel Handsignal choreography, as tweener girls in the audience scream, “Oh! My! God!”

 ::snipping2:
:
At the end of two hours of fun, three celebrities find themselves at the bottom of the heap: Bristol, Drew Lachey, and doomed Pamela.

The first celebrity cut from the all-star edition of “Dancing with the Stars” is: Pamela.

“I was ready for it, for sure. We got the lowest score,” Pamela says, insisting she will continue to dance.

Dancing With the Stars sends Pamela Anderson packing
September 26, 2012

September 26, 2012 ( LOS ANGELES) -- Pamela Anderson isn't too surprised to get bounced on "Dancing With the Stars."
The judges ripped her for not putting in enough effort in rehearsing her cha-cha. And it showed. Anderson was at the bottom of the judges' scorecard following the first week's performances. She said she knew she was in danger after her performance.

'Dancing With the Stars' sends second celeb packing
October 3, 2012

Going into Tuesday's "Dancing With the Stars" results show, Bristol Palin was way at the bottom of the pack with a low score of 18.

The next celeb up on the leaderboard was Kirstie Alley, with 21.

Did either of them become the second celeb of the All-Star season to be sent home?

First, during the 8 p.m. hour, each star recalled a favorite dance from the first time on the series. So, for example, we got to see Kelly Monaco's wardrobe malfunction in 2005 — when the straps of her green bikini-type top broke and she had to hold it together during her sexy samba. "I'm still terrified," she said, recalling how she just had to keep going. The whole time she was thinking, "Am I going to flash America? I had no idea." The rest were less eventful.
 ::snipping2::

Before the final results were revealed, lovely opera star Katherine Jenkins, who danced with USA TODAY blogger Mark Ballas last season, returned to the ballroom as a special musical guest. She took the stage for a duet with Plácido Domingo on "Come What May," featured on Domingo's new album, "Songs." (Jenkins said she'll be running her first half-marathon on Sunday in London for charity, by the way.)

Next, Melissa Rycroft, Gilles Marini and Apolo Anton Ohno were all told they were safe.

And Helio Castroneves and his pro partner Chelsie Hightower were told they were in jeopardy.

It came down to Helio or Joey. Who would get the boot?

And finally, the all-star celeb who had to say farewell was ... Joey Fatone!

Said Brooke, "Way too soon! Who's going to make us laugh during rehearsals now?"

Joey took it in stride. "Everybody was great. For me, I'm actually going to a wedding tomorrow, so I don't give a damn. I'm going to have a good time!" He laughed and thanked fans for their votes. "As long as I had fun, I don't care what your votes say, but I appreciate it."

I noticed the same thing when I started watching DWTS.
I think perhaps we see dancing with the hips (swaying, rocking, stepping back and forth & side to side) and not so much with the feet, because dance steps (feet) are a lot harder to do.  It could take lots of training, even when a person is a natural.  Just to get some to the point we see on the show takes lots and lots of time and effort from what I've seen when the practice sessions are shown.   And I'm sure the outfits help camouflage a lot. (a lotta fluff n' stuff)  ::MonkeyHaHa::    Plus, the stars are dancing with professionals, and it can contrast abilities for sure.  But then, sometimes the stars are pretty amazing at times, especially watching them as they improve.  But yeah, I know what you mean.

Good point, Muffy!

I miss Pricilla's, blue ball gown! I like elegant clothes, no such thing this season, or not yet.

Pam looked like she was Halloweening, (almost, grotesque) before she was bounced off, DWTS, she was fave, too.

I don't blame the stars for taking shortcuts, they became smart. I am thinking about the dancers injuries, too, in the past...I guess the Hips, are safe way, to go.

There is no mystery  on DWTS!!   ::MonkeyDance::

That is what it is, IMO, the contestants, no longer, have any mystery to them!!

We all know the personalities, what was fresh and fun, is just depressing now :(

NYCIS, or whatever, it is  ::MonkeyHaHa:: has mystery. The mystery is gone on DTWS.

'Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars' topped by Melissa Rycroft and Kelly Monaco
October 9, 2012

Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars has been topped by not one but two new first-place couples.
Reality TV star Melissa Rycroft and professional partner Tony Dovolani and soap star Kelly Monaco and partner Val Chmerkovskiy finished in a tie for first place on the judges' leaderboard during Dancing with the Stars' fifteenth-season third performance show on ABC Monday night.

The two couples topped the leaderboard after they received 27 out of 30 possible points from Dancing with the Stars' new scoring system, which features 0.5 intervals for the first time in the show's history, for their dances from Dancing with the Stars judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. Both pairs earned the highest score of the All-Stars edition yet to date.

Dancing with the Stars Sends Two Couples Home
October 9, 2012

It was double the nail-biting on Tuesday's Dancing with the Stars.

Unlike in prior weeks of this season's all-star competition, two couples were sent home at the end of the night.

Following Monday night's show, bottom-two regulars Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas landed in the last place spot, despite earning their highest score of the season. Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy tied for second-to-last with Drew Lachey and Anna Trebunskaya.
::snipping2::The first round of eliminations came down to Lachey/Trebunskaya and Alley/Chmerkovskiy, and it was Lachey who got the boot.

 ::snipping2::
In the second round Palin was declared safe, narrowing it down to Helio Castroneves/Chelsie Hightower and Sabrina Bryan/Louis Van Amstel.

In the end, fifth-season champ Castroneves was eliminated. He thanked his racing team and America "for letting me do this."

I wasn't able to watch, but I've read the reviews and I read the comments from the link you posted, seahorse.   I'm not surprised popularity won over talent.  It isn't the first time that's happened.   ::MonkeyWink::  So it can be confusing at times, when it's a dance contest but it's also very much a popularity contest.  Sometimes the peoples votes can make a big difference.   ::piggy::

Drew Lachey on Dancing Elimination: 'It Really Sucks!'
October 3, 2012

Tuesday night's double-elimination on Dancing with the Stars produced sighs of relief from saved bottom scorers Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas – but eliminated pair Drew Lachey and Anna Trebunskaya were left with feelings of angst.

"Oh, my gosh, I was so robbed!" Trebunskaya, 31, told reporters backstage after she and Lachey, 36, learned their fate. "Are you kidding me? I have an amazing partner. We had so much fun together. I feel robbed of having the fun of working with this person."

Lachey supported his partner's sentiments.

"I feel disappointed that it came to an end," he said. "There are fantastic dancers on the show. Everyone knows it and everyone sees it every week. [But] do I think we're going home too early? Absolutely. I don't think there's anybody in this ballroom who would disagree with that."

Lachey, who admits he takes his dismissal "personally," was let down when the previous night that started out strong turned into one of the lower-scoring performances of the evening.

Muffy, I did not vote this season.   EC was so elegant. I will miss his smile. I remember, when Marie O. had the popular vote, she was more interesting, than B.P., IMO. I just wonder if ABC, has an interview with S.P., who is reported, to be writing
a book. Something stinks and it's not feet :)

'Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars' results recap: Odd team out
October 17, 2012

Turns out they were the odd team out after all. Even after getting eights and judges’ praise across the board (and a high-10 from Carrie Ann), the couple going home in this fourth week of “Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars” competition was Bristol Palin and her pro partner, Mark Ballas.

Kudos to the young Palin and her fan base for keeping the lower-scoring all-star in the running for this long. And this way, they were able to leave on a high note: Bristol and Mark went through a whole dramatic arc the whole time they were in the competition. First, happiness to be back in the ballroom. Then there was the tension and tears and accusations. Finally, just as Mark and Bristol were able to work through their differences and come back with a rock & roll hop, they were bounced out of the competition.

And there were no tears or sadness at the results. “We made it to Week 4, and I’m happy with that,” smiled Bristol. “I put my best foot forward, and did the best that I could.”

And now the freestyle group teams picked by Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd, and Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough, can stay as they were. Gilles and Peta chose Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy, Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke, and will dance to the guilty pleasure and summer sensation “Gangnam Style” by Psy (Val just said he wants a “good-looking team. That’s all that matters.”). Shawn and Derek selected Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel, Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani, and Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff. They’ll dance to guilty pleasure and summer sensation “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen.

Following her elimination from "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars," Bristol Palin visited "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to talk about the show. Kimmel didn't start the interview off on the right foot when he acknowledged that he's made fun of her mother "one or two" times in the past.
"Yes, I'm here for my apology," Palin says in the above video, to which Kimmel responds with a laugh, "I'm sorry."
When she calls him out on not actually being sorry, he acknowledges, "I'm not sorry, you're right, but I will allow you to make 48,000 jokes about my mother just to make us even. ... If you knew her, you would make fun of her, that I can promise you."

Gilles still gags me, and I just watched his *dance* with Peta.  I was embarrassed to be watching them.....felt like a voyeaur (think that's the word.)  ugh.  ::MonkeyShocked::

And, then Carrie Ann falling off her chair in near ecstasy.  Good Heavens.  guess they'll get all 10s.  sigh. ::MonkeyNoNo::

I wasn't really impressed with any of the singles dancing tonite, they all seemed tired and not much bounce.

I did like the group dance though.  It was really the best of the night, think age may have something to do with it?

Hi, y'all!  It was an awful day with my 8th graders, so I thought I'd check y'all out tonight!

So happy to see everyone . . .  ::MonkeyCheer4::

I am making only ONE comment (shocking, I know) about last night.   I'm not sure how to put this *delicately* as it sounds so crass.  ::MonkeyCool::

Here goes:  Did you all notice when Gilles was dancing and Peta did the upside down splits, or whatever you call it when he was holding her legs in a split . . . . then, he looks down at her crotch and bugs out his eyes . . . .  ::MonkeyNoNo:: ::MonkeyEek::

My Lord.   I was stunned.  A couple of teachers (younger than I) saw it, and mentioned this morning how "grossed out" they were (their words).   I kind of felt better knowing others noticed that moment . . . it was also shown at the end of the show in the highlights part . . . yeah, it was a high light, all right.  ::MonkeyShocked::

Well, as usual, I am back to my very long-winded ONE comment.   ::MonkeyShovel::

I am so relieved someone else noticed and had the same thought.

I bet Tom Bergeron saw it, too . . . he is so quick with a quip, but that was just beyond words.  ::MonkeyEek::

‘Dancing With the Stars’: Apolo Anton Ohno, Emmitt Smith go home
By Emily Yahr

(http://www.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_296w/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2012/10/02/Others/Images/2012-10-02/dwts-129805_9183_pre1349214421.jpg?uuid=tXOA1gzaEeK6bAe9hm63Gg)

Next week is the big finale on the first-ever “Dancing With the Stars” all stars season, and we know who won’t be making the trip — Apolo Anton Ohno and Emmitt Smith, leaving the three remaining women to duke it out next week.

In between a truly psychadelic performance by Paula Abdul and an appearance from about-to-be-overexposed pop band The Wanted, the Apolo and Emmitt said goodbye.

“Apolo, a true sportsman, you’ve been the consumate professional,” Brooke Burke Charvet intoned to the Olympic speedskater, who was the first person kicked off. Brooke twisted the knife: “How difficult is tonight, falling just one week short of the finals?”

“This competiton was hard from the begining and Karina’s...taught me so much about myself,” Apolo said, looking truly disappointed. “This show is amazing far beyond what the Mirror Ball Trophy has in store for people...”

After rambling on for awhile about gaining confidence, etc., Tom Bergeron was forced to cut him off — so long, Apolo.

Dancing with the Stars: SEASON 15, EPISODE 17
Dancing with the Stars Results Watch: Who Is in the Finals?
By Melissa Locker

Last night on the semifinals of Dancing with the Stars: All Stars, we found out which of these “stars” was still in the running to win the coveted Mirrorball Trophy. (It’s coveted because it’s mirrored and thus makes whatever room it’s placed in look so much larger.) After last night’s performances, where the competitors had to execute routines to a Michael Jackson song as well as the-producers-are-drunk mish-mash numbers like “Caveman Hustle” or “Knight Rider Bhangra,” Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough topped the leaderboard with a nearly perfect 59 out of 60, while Emmitt and Cheryl and Kelly and Val are tied at the bottom with 54. With the series’ third double elimination of this season looming, let’s find out which contestants America is sending packing and which they voted into the finals.

Here’s what happened on the semifinals of Dancing with the Stars: All Stars:

Most Suspicious Repeat Performance: The judges chose to see a repeat performance of Olympic speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno’s and Karina Smirnoff’s rumba to Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” While some may see this as an honor, unfortunately it is usually the kiss of death on this show.

Least Surprising Moment: Shawn and Derek’s “Knight Rider Bhangra” earned the Olympic gymnast a standing ovation and a perfect 30, while her Michael Jackson tango got a 29. So, yeah, they are safe. More interestingly, somehow Derek seems to have sprouted significant facial hair over night. Guess he remembered to water his face chia pet.

The Rising Star of Dance: Parris Goebel, a young New Zealand native, is a self-trained hip-hop dancer who started her own dance crew and opened her own studio at the age of 17. Then Jennifer Lopez came calling. What did you do at 17 aside from failing your driver’s test and getting mono twice? Goebel’s routine, set to Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire,” was so powerful that Tom Bergeron collapsed on the stage next to her saying, “Wow.”
