Shooter near Texas A&M campus in custody, police say

A shooter has been taken into custody by police near the Texas A&M campus in College Station, the university reported Monday.

According to KCEN-TV, six people, including two police officers, were injured in the shooting about a block away from the school's campus. Accorind to College Station's Eagle, newspaper, one of the two officers died in the apparent shootout.

A spokeswoman for the College Station Police Department told KBTX-TV "there are no confirmed fatalities at this point" and that there is "no longer a danger to the public." A member of KBTX-TV film's crew said at least one of the shooting victims was a police officer. ::snipping2::

2:35 PM Update:
News 3 has confirmed that three people are dead following a shooting near Fidelity Street in College Station earlier today.

The College Station Police Department has confirmed that Brian Bachmann, Constable Precinct 1 Brazos County, has died. Police also say a male civilian was killed, and the suspect in the shooting has died.

CSPD reports that another officer was shot in the leg and is listed in stable condition. A female civilian is currently in surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. Police say two other officers received non-life threatening injuries.

Law enforcement officials say the scene is clear, and that there is no present danger, but ask that civilians avoid the area to allow for an investigation.

Shooting near Texas A-M kills officer, civilian, gunman

College Station police say a gunman killed one police officer and a civilian and wounded another officer near Texas A&M University. The gunman was wounded and died in custody.

The university, located in College Station, about 90 miles northwest of Houston, initially reported the shooting at 1:29 p.m. ET, and 15 minutes later said a gunman was in custody. The university immediately issued a Code Maroon on its emergency website, instructing students and school personnel to avoid the area.

Update at 4:03 p.m. ET: The gunman has died, police say, the Associated Press is reporting.

Update at 4 p.m. ET: The Eagle names the dead officer as Constable Brian Bachman, who was shot while serving paperwork.

The paper also says the gunman has died.

Update at 3:48 p.m. ET: Police say the gunman was shot before being taken into custody.

Three people have died, including a Brazos County constable and a reported gunman, in a shootout this afternoon in College Station, according to police.

A 65-year-old male bystander was also killed in the shooting, which occurred about 12:15 p.m. at a home on Fidelity Street near the Texas A&M University campus, Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum said in a press conference today.
The constable was identified as Precinct 1 Constable Brian Bachmann. Officials have not released the name of the civilian or the shooter.

Two other people were shot, McCollum said: A 55-year-old woman who is in surgery, and a College Station police officer who was shot in the calf and is in stable condition and receiving treatment.

Two other officers received injuries that were not considered life-threatening, he said.

Police said they had no reason to believe there are any more suspects, but people are still advised to avoid the area.

“As you can imagine, in a situation like this it’s very chaotic,” McCollum said.

Bachmann was shot while serving an eviction notice at the home near the corner of Fidelity and Highlands streets, Bachmann said. He had no other details about why the notice was being served.

College Station officers responded to the scene and were fired upon by the suspect inside the home, Bachmann said. Police continued to exchange gunfire with the suspect until he was shot and taken into custody, he said.

College Station Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum said a total of five people -- including the gunman -- were shot. The gunman was taken into custody before he died, officials said. Two other officers required medical attention but were not hit by gunfire.

The constable who was killed was identified as Brian Bachmann, 41.

The incident unfolded starting at about 12:15 p.m. not far from Kyle Field, home of the Texas Aggies football team. Several officers were called in and exchanged fire wi with a man who was said to be barricaded inside a home, McCollum said.

Another officer was shot in the leg. The civilian who was killed was a 65-year-old man whose name was not released. A woman, 55, was shot and was undergoing surgery. Her name was not released.

McCollum said that it appeared that Bachmann was shot as he approached the gunman's house. Calls from 911 came to the College Station Police Department and several officers were dispatched, he said.

"When our officers arrived on the scene, they took fire," Bachmann said.

The reports of the shootings came in from the university's campus alert system.

"Avoid Area," the university said in an alert at 12:30 p.m. " CSPD reports an active shooter in the area immediately southeast of the intersection of Welborn Rd and George Bush Drive. Please avoid the area. Residents in the immediate area need to remain inside their residence.

The Bryan-College Station Eagle was reporting that someone was barricaded inside a home in the area where the shots were fired.

A&M spokeswoman Sherylon Carroll told the Associated Press that most students were not on campus Monday. The fall semester does not begin until August 27.

Update: CultureMap Houston is reporting that a Houston mother of a Texas A&M student is among the shooting victims. According to CultureMap, Barbara Holdsworth was helping her daughter Sarah move when she was hit by gunfire. Barbara Holdsworth suffered lung damage, CultureMap says.

Three people, including an elected Brazos County constable and a gunman, are dead in a College Station shooting Monday afternoon near the Texas A&M University campus, authorities said.

Precinct 1 Constable Brian Bachmann; the 35-year-old shooter, believed to be Thomas Caffall; and an unidentified man, 65, were killed in a gunfire exchange just after noon in the 200 block of Fidelity.

In all, seven people were injured or died.

A College Station police officer was shot in the calf and two other officers sustained injuries that are not life threatening. Another civilian, a 55-year-old female, was injured and was undergoing surgery, College Station Police Department Assistant Chief Scott McCollum said at a news conference.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — A routine serving of an eviction notice to a man living near the Texas A&M University campus turned deadly for Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann when the resident opened fire on him, leading to the death of the law enforcement officer and another man before the gunman was killed.

The spasm of deadly violence Monday left a neighborhood shaken, a tight-knit law enforcement community in mourning and the family of 35-year-old gunman Thomas Alton Caffall anguished and "distraught by the havoc that he has caused."

Caffall's stepfather, Richard Weaver, told CBS station KHOU that the suspected gunman refused to work after apparently quitting his job less than a year ago. Weaver said Caffall regularly played video games inside his rental home near the campus. According to KHOU, Northcliff, the third man killed on Monday, was Caffall's landlord.

Weaver told KHOU that Caffall played video games so much that it seemed to be warping his sense of reality. He said Callfall's alleged violent reaction to an eviction notice was not something that surprised him. Weaver even told KHOU he had become concerned that Callfall might hurt, or even kill, one of his own family members in recent months.

Weaver told KHOU reporter Drew Karedes over the telephone that he was worried his stepson was going to snap. When asked if the family ever brought the concerns to authorities, he said they had not.

According to his Facebook campaign page, Bachmann was a 41-year-old from College Station who had been a Brazos County sheriff's deputy since 1993. The county's website indicated that his four-year term as constable -- a position that involves, among other duties, serving court documents such as eviction notices and subpoenas to citizens -- was set to expire on December 31, 2014.

The city of College Station on Monday night identified the suspect at the center of the standoff as 35-year-old Thomas Caffall.

On a Facebook page purported to be by Caffall, he indicates his hometown is nearby Bryan, Texas, but that he was living in College Station -- though he also described himself as "a cross between Forrest Gump and Jack Kerouac ... I'm on the road permanently."

Three of the seven profile pictures on the Facebook page are of rifles, three feature dogs and one shows a man in an image much like one distributed Monday night by the city of College Station. His list of "inspirational people" includes famed snipers Vasily Zaytsev and Carlos Hathcock, as well as noted firearms designers Eugene Stoner, Mikhail Kalashnikov, John Garand, Samuel Colt and John Browning. The writer indicates he is divorced and has a mother, sister and brother.

The page also includes a quote saying, "We are all capable of redemption, if we are willing to change," plus another he attributes to George Orwell stating, "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

As to the third victim, described as a "civilian bystander," he was identified as 43-year-old Chris Northcliff of College Station.
Four others suffered injuries in the roughly 30-minute ordeal after law enforcement officers arrived at a residence a few blocks from the Texas A&M campus.

They included College Station police Officer Justin Oehlke, who was shot in the calf, and two other officers -- one of whom refused transport to an area hospital -- who suffered "non-life-threatening injuries," McCollum said. A 55-year-old female civilian who was shot was undergoing surgery Monday afternoon at a hospital, according to the assistant police chief.

COLLEGE STATION — A half-hour gunbattle through the streets of a quiet neighborhood just two blocks from the athletic facilities on the Texas A&M campus left a Brazos County constable and a 43-year-old man dead Monday before the gunman was killed, police said.

Three police officers and a 55-year-old woman were wounded.

Authorities and residents described a chaotic scene, with dozens of officers and multiple ambulances pouring into the neighborhood as sporadic gunfire resounded after the shooting began around 12:10 p.m.

Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann was attempting to serve an eviction notice in the historic neighborhood when he was shot to death by Thomas Caffall, 35, a resident of the home at 211 Fidelity St., police said.

Neighbors called 911 to report gunshots, and two College Station police officers arrived minutes later to find Bachmann lying in the front yard of the house before they, too, came under fire, Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum said. Officers performed CPR on Bachmann until he was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, McCollum said.

Caffall was shot and killed by a College Station police officer, McCollum said. Police declined to discuss a motive for the shooting or what weapons were used.

A search of public records show a single misdemeanor charge for Caffall in 2006 for driving with an invalid or suspended license. Records also show he lived in Austin for a brief period of time in 2002.

Police were collecting evidence from at least four crime scenes in the neighborhood — about six blocks were closed off throughout the afternoon — and additional crime scenes might be added, McCollum said.

Bachmann, elected constable in 2010, had worked previously for the Brazos County sheriff's office and the Brazos Valley Narcotics Task Force.

"Brian Bachmann is very close to everyone in law enforcement, a pillar of this community. It's sad; it's tragic," McCollum said, adding that officers are working to balance the need to investigate the gunfight with their emotions after losing a valued colleague.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KXAN) - The neighborhood where deadly gunfire broke out in College Station -- killing three -- is still taped off Tuesday morning as authorities continue to investigate.

"The investigation continues today, and the crime scene is still being processed," said College Station Police Chief Jeff Capps during a Tuesday morning news conference. "That will go on for most of the day and maybe into the night."

Capps didn't offer much new information about the multiagency investigation but said that they would keep everyone updated as additional information becomes available throughout the day.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KPRC) - A Houston mother was among the victims wounded in a shootout in College Station near the Texas A&M campus Monday.

Barbara Holdsworth, 51, was helping her daughter move when bullets rang out. Holdsworth lives in the Memorial area.

Sources told KPRC Local 2 that Holdsworth underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to her lungs. She was hospitalized in serious condition.

Chris Northcliff, a 51-year-old College Station resident and father of two, was one of three who died in the shootout.

Police spokeswoman Rhonda Seaton said Northcliff and Holdsworth were outside the home when they were shot.

TRAVIS COUNTY -- A motorcade of law enforcement vehicles escorted the body of Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann back to College Station after an autopsy in Travis County on Tuesday.

Officers from various agencies rode along to show their respect for their fallen brother.

Funeral arrangements are being determinded for the 41-year-old who was killed in a shootout in College Station while serving an eviction notice to 35-year-old Thomas Caffall.

College Station police confirmed Tuesday that the gunman at the center of a shooting near Texas A&M campus where three people were killed was fatally shot by officers.

College Station Police Chief Jeff Capps also said that investigators uncovered long guns and pistols from the shooter's residence, some of which were used in the assault Monday.

Meanwhile, a Houston woman remains in serious condition in a College Station hospital Tuesday, after she was wounded in the crossfire of the shootout.

Capps said the investigation into the shooting at 211 Fidelity is still ongoing as investigators process the scene, which covers several blocks around the house where the shooting began

COLLEGE STATION (August 14, 2012)—Thomas Alton Caffall, 35, the gunman who opened fire on a Brazos County constable who was attempting to serve an eviction notice shortly after noon Monday at a house near the Texas A&M University campus, was a former Temple resident.

Brazos County Pct. 1 Constable Brian Bachmann was killed in the shooting, the College Station Police Department said.

He was serving an eviction notice at the home on Fidelity Street when he was killed, Assistant College Station Police Chief Scott McCollum said.

Brazos County Justice of the Peace Michael McCleary said Tuesday that Bachmann wasn't scheduled to serve the notice, but "grabbed" it from a deputy and made the delivery as "part of his job."

McCleary said Tuesday that Caffall was two months behind on $625 rent, and the notice ordered him to appear in court next week to explain the delay.

McCleary says eviction would have been the next step.

Bachmann was an 18-year veteran of the Brazos County Sheriff's Office before his election to the constable's post.

Caffall's sister Courtney Clark said her family was shocked by what her brother did.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families, and this is just a senseless tragedy," she said.

Clark declined to say anything else about her brother or what might have prompted him to commit the shooting.

A neighbor who witnessed the shooting said Caffall asked him to apologize to the constable he shot.

Rigo Cisneros, a former medic, told The Bryan-College Station Eaglet that Caffall made the request as he lay dying from bullet wounds he suffered in the shootout with police.

Officials at Texas A&M said Caffall was neither a student nor school employee.

Those were some of the words that family and friends used during a funeral service Saturday to fondly remember a law enforcement officer who was among three people killed in a shootout near Texas A&M University.

More than 3,000 people attended the service for Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann at an arena on the A&M campus in College Station. Among those in attendance were law enforcement officers from across the state, including Lubbock in West Texas and Hidalgo County in South Texas. A choir of more than 80 people from Bachmann's Methodist church in College Station sang during the service.
