Title: 'Moon River' crooner Andy Williams dies at age 84

ST. LOUIS (AP) — With a string of gold albums, a hit TV series and the signature "Moon River," Andy Williams was a voice of the 1960s, although not the '60s we usually hear about.

The singer known for his easy-listening style and his wholesome, middle-America appeal was the antithesis of the counterculture that gave rise to rock and roll.

"The old cliche says that if you can remember the 1960s, you weren't there," he once recalled. "Well, I was there all right, but my memory of them is blurred — not by any drugs I took but by the relentless pace of the schedule I set myself."
 ::snipping2::

The 84-year-old entertainer died Tuesday night at his Branson home following a yearlong battle with the disease, his Los Angeles-based publicist, Paul Shefrin, said Wednesday.

Williams became a major star in 1956, the same year as Elvis Presley, with the Sinatra-like swing number "Canadian Sunset." For a time, he was pushed into such Presley imitations as "Lips of Wine" and the No. 1 smash "Butterfly."

But he mostly stuck to what he called his "natural style" and kept it up throughout his career. In 1970, when even Sinatra had temporarily retired, Williams was in the top 10 with the theme from "Love Story," the Oscar-winning tearjerker. He had 18 gold records and three platinum, was nominated for five Grammy awards and hosted the Grammy ceremonies for several years.

Movie songs became a specialty, including his signature "Moon River." The longing Johnny Mercer-Henry Mancini ballad was his most famous song, even though he never released it as a single because his record company feared such lines as "my huckleberry friend" were too confusing and old-fashioned for teens.

I remember those Christmas Specials!  I also remember how uncomfortable and painful it was to watch the family (together, but separated) on a TV Christmas Special, towards the end of the marriage. :(

Marriage to Andy William

Longet and Williams met in Las Vegas in 1960 when she was 18 and he was 32. Longet was experiencing problems with her car and had pulled over to the side of the road. Driving by, Williams stopped to offer assistance. She was the lead dancer of the Folies Bergčre revue at the Tropicana Resort & Casino. They married on 15 December 1961 in Los Angeles,[4] and had three children: Noëlle (born on 24 September 1963), Christian (born on 15 April 1965), and Robert ("Bobby") (born on 1 August 1969). They legally separated in 1970 and divorced in January 1975. According to Williams, they remained "very good friends".

This article says the district court judge noticed an affidavit filed by the sheriff for a search warrant hadn't been signed by a judge.  It says the affidavit was important because it was needed to get a warrant to search Spider's home the day he was shot. Among the items seized in the search was Claudine's diary.

Toward the bottom of the article it says the diary, along with blood and urine tests administered to Claudine are the objects of the evidence suppression hearing.

Thank-you, Muffy.

The warrant was not signed by the Judge?   ::MonkeyEek:  The case may have been lost because the blood and urine samples, and THE Diary.

She was very convincing on the stand.  I believe she is an actress and a pretty good one in court,IMO.  I think she was able to serve the thirty days, whenever she wished, within a
limited time frame. She served her sentence on weekends, if my memory serves me correctly. We growl because a case takes too long, it is better to wait, than to have it fudged it. :(

Showbiz Andy Williams dead at 84: ‘Moon River’ crooner loses battle with bladder cancer

Williams came across for six decades on concert stages and television shows as the ultimate Mr. Nice Guy, as well known for his warm, genial personal style as for his music.

Death

 ::snipping2::

The Pitkin County Sheriff's, who made the arrest, made two procedural errors that aided Longet's defense: without warrants, they took a blood sample from her and confiscated her diary. According to prosecutors, the sample showed the presence of (snip) in her blood, and her diary reportedly contradicted her claim that her relationship with Sabich had not soured. In addition, the gun was mishandled by non-weapons experts. As they were unable to cite any of the disallowed material, prosecutors did use the autopsy report to suggest that when Sabich was struck, he was bent over, facing away, and at least 1.80 m (6 feet) from Longet, which would be inconsistent with the position and relative distance of someone demonstrating the operation of a firearm.

Watching this, still brings tears to my eyes.  It is extremely moving and crosses party boundries.

I remember reading that AW continued to support Claudine throughout the trial.  Many in their "circles" believed justice was not served in Spider's case.   ::CowboySmiley::

Flutter,

AW felt guilt, more than love, IMO. He met her, when she was a mere Eighteen-years-old.
He toured and left her home with three babies. Perhaps,he bore the responsibilty for the divorce.

CL and Spider had a 'ringy ding ding' going on for four years, 72-76 ?  That is news to me.  ::MonkeyEek::

You may be right about Williams' sticking by CL because of guilt.  I guess I never realized the vast age gap, and I am sure that he was no saint.

Hello Monkey's!

Flutter,

May I ask you what you opinion, what set her off?

I am going by your experience from reading crime novels.  The only crime book I read was “The only living witness”!

Do you think she divorced AW, for the Hunk?

Do you think it was "coco...." in her system?

S, was  two years younger, than her, a contrast from AW.

S. was so fine, but, perhaps, not cultured.

What a Hunk...my goodness!  ::dogwag::

I haven't thought too much about that angle, but if I were to guess I would saw all of the above.  From being so young and marrying to such an older man and had three children, she must have felt like she lost out on her "youth."  I am sure that being AW's wife kept her on a short leash as to what she could and could not do without bringing bad publicity down on him.  The coco definitely brings down the inhibitions and I am sure that SS was everything and MORE that AW wasn't.  SS and AW are opposite ends of the spectrum and sometimes after being suppressed, the soul must try to reach heights and the more dangerous, the better.  JMHO,  ::CowboySmiley::

Okay, just read what you really asked instead of what I thought you asked.  I think the drug use is what caused her to kill him, but I tend to believe the drugs cause many moral people to do immoral things.

I agree with you, drgs.  Thank-you, Flutter, for your view. I did not know at the time about the drugs, because of the blood tests were not allowed in court.

CL had a neat life working a showgirl in Las Vegas.

Who would not want to be one, for at a day?

I would love to know how did she become a showgirl, at 18 years-old?

She was not very meaty looking...I thought you needed a little more of something :)

She was free and I understand her wanting her wings, and fly away. I do not understand how she could put the little kids, in such an insecure, living situation.

I thought showgirls had to be tall, statuesque, and buxom.  Claudine is described as petite and if you look at pictures of her and AW, who was only 5' 6 1/2", she appears to be a slight woman in all ways.  Maybe this was before the breast augmentation days, so maybe she didn't have to be as "chesty" as what show girls are now, but I don't see her making it in Las Vegas today.

I also saw that after the SS shooting, The Rolling Stones did a song about her called, of course, "Claudine," but it wasn't released until years after the trial.

I think I have seen all of the DD "Power, Privilege, and Justice" episodes, but when I see one on, I always watch the first few minutes to make sure.  Yes, he was a marvelous story teller and evidently lived in the level of society where he knew many of the people he told about. ::CowboySmiley::

Barrows can still remember the day at Bear Valley, Calif., in 1972, when the racers walked into a restaurant to see Longet — a singer and actress — sitting in a corner with Liza Minelli, Clint Eastwood and Robert Conrad. Sabich introduced himself, and the fatal romance began.

On March 21, 1976, Sabich stopped by Beattie's house after a training session at Aspen Highlands, then went home to change clothes with plans to meet Beattie later for dinner. But Longet shot him, and he died on the way to the hospital. He was 31.

How wonderful would it be to have what Claudine, Andy, and even Spider threw away.  I think of the Andy Williams Christmas Specials and how even after their split, Claudine and the children were there representing the "perfect" family.  They made life look so blissful, even though it was not even close.  Such a hollow, shallow, self-absorbed and narcissistic life it must have been.   ::CowboySmiley::

A few dockets by the parents of SS, mostly, I believe on the house. I found one CLW.

SS and CL both lived live on the edge, IMO. Life was a bunch of manure. ::MonkeyHaHa::

She lived a double-life. IMO.
The children never looked happy on the TV specials.

LOL, you would win by a mile!  Yes, she probably did live a double life.  I can't imagine being a bird in a gilded cage, as she was with AW, but like what happens with those birds, once they are free they fly so high (pun intended), that they crash and burn like Icarus and his wings of wax.  I don't have too much sympathy for any of them, for they were all adults when they made their respective beds.  CL was barely an adult, but for some reason I believe she had lived a long life before she reached 18 and knew (or thought she knew) what she wanted.  Their children, on the other hand, are the ones caught up in the unhappiness that adults bring upon themselves and each other.   ::CowboySmiley::

Andy Williams mourned by colleagues and fans

"Andy was a dear friend of mine," said  actress and singer Doris Day, "and we've known each other since we were kids in Cincinnati. He and his brothers sang and of course, so did I, and often I would go over to their house and we would sing together. They asked me to join their group, but my vocal coach thought I should be out on my own and so that's what I did. Andy and I kept in touch over the years and just recently, even when he was so sick, he wrote to congratulate me on my new CD. He was such a sweet, thoughtful man, and I will miss him dearly."

Singer Andy Williams remembered at Mo. tribute
October 21, 2012

BRANSON, Mo. (AP) — Entertainer Andy Williams is being remembered for his smooth voice, gleaming smile and warm heart during a memorial tribute at his Moon River Theatre in the southwest Missouri town of Branson.
More than a thousand people attended the memorial tribute Sunday for Williams, who died last month at age 84 after a battle with bladder cancer.
The crowd included celebrity entertainers such as Bob Newhart and the Lennon Sisters, who performed with Williams for years. Others, such as Bill Cosby, were to share their remembrances by video.
