An AMBER ALERT has been issued for 10 year old Jessica Ridgeway who is missing in Westminster, CO .  Jessica Ridgeway  was last seen at approximately 8:30 AM Friday, October 5, leaving her home walking to school. She never made it to school. According to Westminster police spokesman investigator Trevor Materasso, Jessica’s mom gets home about 7:30 am and gets her her daughter ready for school. At 8:30 am she sends her off and Jessica walks to a local park where she meets classmates. They then as a group walk to school. However,  on Friday Jessica never made it to Chelsea Park, and the group walked to school without her.  Making matters even more tragic, the reporting of Jessica Ridgeway missing was delayed  as the school called her home to report her absent, but her mother sleeps during the day, and didn’t get the message until 4 p.m. That’s when she called police to report her missing. Jessica Ridgeway was last seen in the area of 107th Ave. and Moore St. in Westminster.

Jessica's mother works an overnight shift. When she got home at 7:30 a.m. she saw Jessica off to school at 8:30 a.m., according to 9NEWS reporter Kevin Torres.

Police say they got a late start searching because her mother didn't immediately realize she was missing. Officers say her mother slept through calls from school officials to tell her Jessica hadn't arrived.

Westminster police sent out an emergency text alert advising residents to be on the lookout before a system-wide Amber Alert was issued by the CBI Friday evening.

"[We] started activating a lot of personnel to start searching for her," Westminster Police Detective Trevor Materasso said.

An Amber Alert is only issued if authorities fear the child is in immediate danger.

Does this little girl stay at home by herself while her mother works the night shift.

Good question......

There has been no mention from what I have seen. I can't imagine that there is not some one is looks in. Maybe mom just puts her tp bed and goes off to work???

One problem is that is the girl walks to school everyday by self to the park to meet up with frinds and then off to school ... that is a pattern that any predator could see and take advantage of.

Jessica is a good child and a good student, she said. Officials contacted every child in her class and all friends to see if she may have gone to one of their homes, but there was no sign of her.

She lives with her mother, grandmother and aunt.

Westminster Police Department is conducting a widespread search and asking for the public's help in finding Jessica Ridgeway, a 10-year-old girl who was last seen walking to school Friday morning.

Westminster Police Department spokesman Trevor Materasso said Ridgeway was last seen by her mother around 8:30 a.m. walking down the driveway of her home on West 107th Avenue and Moore Street.

Materasso said Ridgeway and her friends normally meet three blocks away at Chelsea Park and walk another 1.3 miles to Witt Elementary School, but on that morning, friends said she never showed up.

Jefferson County Public Schools called Ridgeway's mother around 10:30 a.m. and left a voice message noting her daughter was absent. Materasso said Ridgeway's mother, who works the graveyard shift, slept through the phone message and did not receive it until about 4 or 4:30 p.m.

He said Ridgeway's mother immediately called the police after noticing her daughter did not return home from school.

Throughout the night, about 50 police department officers and Adams County Sheriff's Office deputies used bloodhounds and thermal equipment to look for Ridgeway. Materasso said last night's search grid spanned from West 88th Avenue to West 112th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard to Alkire Street.

A helicopter was used in the search. Bloodhounds were used through most of the night. Although the dogs picked up a scent, it could have been older than Friday morning, Spottke said.

Police are reviewing past incidents for a possible connection, including the attempted abduction on Memorial Day of a 22-year-old female jogger at Ketner Lake in Westminster. A man tried to put a chemical-soaked rag over her mouth. The woman was able to fight her way free and called 911.

"It's definitely something that we're looking at," Spottke said.

Officials contacted the child's father, who lives in Missouri. Materasso said the family in Missouri there attended a child custody hearing there concerning Jessica Friday. He said he does not know the outcome of the hearing, but detectives do not believe it's related to Jessica's disappearance.

Three weeks ago students at an Arvada school saw a man in a dark sedan trying to lure students closer to his vehicle. JeffCo schools sent letters out to all of its schools - including Witt Elementary - where Jessica attends school. Police are looking into whether there's a connection.

UPDATE:

The Westminster Police Department is still actively searching for Jessica. We are not utilizing any volunteers on Sunday morning, as we are bringing in a new team of search dogs.

We want to thank the community for their support throughout this entire process. Today we had over 800 volunteers come out to help. Twenty Six times we sent out teams of 50 to search areas on foot. The search area covered was from 92nd Avenue to 112th Avenue, Indiana Street to Wadsworth Boulevard.

Currently we are following up on over 100 tips.

We are still asking that if the public has any information to contact Westminster Police Dispatch at 303 658-4360.

Unless we have a major development, we will not have any further updates until after 8:00am. tomorrow morning.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - A massive search in Westminster Saturday failed to turn up any sign of a missing 10-year-old girl who disappeared while walking to school Friday.

Police said Jessica Ridgeway was last seen walking to Chelsea Park in the area of 107th Avenue and Moore Street around 8:30 a.m. Friday where she was to meet several friends before walking to Witt Elementary School. Jessica's mother stood in the front yard of their home at 10768 Moore St. until her daughter was out of sight.

Jessica never showed up at school.  The school left a voicemail on Jessica's mother's phone. The mother works nights and was asleep when the call came. Police said they were notified Jessica was missing by her mom around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Saturday, volunteers and police searched nearby open spaces looking for clues.

Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said about 800 people volunteered to help look for Jessica on Saturday.

"This morning I really expected maybe a hundred people, so to have that many, it was just amazing. And they just went -- they did what we needed them to. They were so devoted to being out here," Materasso said.  "I watched one gentlemen putting plastic bags on his feet because his feet were soaked through, his shoes were soaked through and he was going back out again."

Buses of volunteers were sent to open spaces in Mayfair, Countryside, Ketner and Chelsea as well as the Westminster Hills Dog Park and Standley Lake.

"It was really emotional because you're looking in ditches and you're looking in culverts and you're looking through sewer drainage pipes.  On the one hand again, you're hoping you might find a boot with a pom pom and on the other hand, you're hoping you don't," said volunteer Marsha Orr.  "My 7-year old son is such an amazing gift to me. To not know where he was spending a cold night, it would rip my heart out."

A dive team searched  Ketner Reservoir Saturday afternoon. The search was "done as a search tool to rule out the lake," police said.

The search area covered on Saturday was from 92nd Avenue to 112th Avenue and from  Indiana Street to Wadsworth Boulevard.

He said police will follow up on more than 100 tips.

Authorities have said they don't think Jessica was abducted by an acquaintance or relative.  The girl's father lives in Missouri and has been accounted for there.

(WESTMINSTER, Colo.) -- Authorities in Colorado are reviewing recent phone calls and social media clues in the disappearance of a 10-year-old girl.

Jessica Ridgeway left home at 8:30 a.m. on Friday to walk three blocks from her Westminster, Colo., home to meet friends for the walk to school. It was a route she took every day, but this time she never got there.

On Saturday, an army of eight hundred volunteers scoured trails and hillsides near Jessica's home.

"Right now they're just asking us to find anything that's out of the ordinary, any kind of evidence we could find," said volunteer Monty Yanker.

Police officers and FBI agents manned road blocks, asking drivers if they had seen or heard anything out of the ordinary.

Officers also canvassed neighborhoods, but the day yielded few leads.

Police haven't called for volunteers today, as police will use a fresh team of four Larimer County Search and Rescue bloodhounds.

"We only have small areas that we want to take a look at," Materasso said.

Jessica's mother, a night shift worker, told police she last saw her walking toward school Friday morning. She reported the girl missing later in the afternoon when she woke to find a phone message saying Jessica hadn't arrived at Witt Elementary.

No evidence points to any family involvement, Materasso said. Jessica's father attended a child-custody hearing in a Missouri courtroom on Friday and police don't believe the custody issue is related to her disappearance.

"We don't have any real focus or attention on any individual," Materasso said.

A Superior resident e-mailed the town's listserv shortly after 1 p.m. today with the message: "Found this morning on the side walk at Andrew Drive and Alpha Court. Water bottle has 'Jessica Ridgeway' name on it. Come and get it."

Law enforcement officials confirmed the message about the bottle has been passed along to the Ridgeway search team, and police have now closed roads around that area to all non-residents.

On Twitter, Westerminster police officials this afternoon said they are "working on a developing lead" and have asked the media to stay out of the area while they use tracking dogs.

Westminster police have asked the press to meet their spokesperson in the parking lot of the Target store at U.S. 36 and McCaslin Boulevard in Superior. A press briefing is expected at 4 p.m.

My husband is outside unloading hay so his dog is whining and I couldn't hear everything that was said...but on the police scanner they are checking out a report of a child resembling Jessica in a vehicle that the caller followed into a Wal-Mart parking lot.

some thoughts....if you have young children or are a woman alone sleeping in a house, don't you keep a phone near where you are sleeping? how does one sleep so soundly through the phone ringing? was grandma and aunt both at work the whole day or out of the home? Why in this day and age would anyone allow a child to walk 3 blocks alone?  Mom could drive this child to school or at least to where she was meeting her group of friends?
I am not saying that mom is responsible for Jessica's disappearance...just questions that popped into my head while reading about her disappearance...

Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso, on scene in Superior, verified that a backpack had been found, but said police weren't able to confirm yet whether it belonged to Ridgeway of whether the water bottle had her name on it.

Materasso said the person who found the backpack didn't recognize the name of the missing girl, but when someone replied to his original e-mail pointing out its significance, he immediately called 911 to report the discovery.

"We've been looking for a lead, and this is possibly that," Materasso told reporters at a news conference this afternoon near the site where the backpack was found.

A bloodhound from Jefferson County is on scene trying to search the area off any scents on the backpack, Materasso said.

Police have now closed roads around that area to all non-residents. Officers can be seen searching trunks of residents' cars going into the neighborhood.

As she was waiting in a line of cars to get home, Christine Wiedinmyer said the original tip was e-mailed by one of her neighbors, and she, too, saw the backpack on the sidewalk around 8:15 this morning as she was headed out. She said it didn't really strike her at first because there often are children's bikes or toys left about in the neighborhood.

She said her husband currently was being interviewed at their house by FBI agents because he, too, saw the backpack.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - The search for a missing 10-year-old Westminster girl shifts to Superior after a water bottle was found with her name on it.

A Superior resident sent an e-mail to the town of Superior with the subject line of  "backpack found" that said: "Found this morning on the side walk at Andrew Drive and Alpha Court. Water bottle has 'Jessica Ridgeway' name on it. Come and get it."  The resident apparently didn't connect the name to the missing girl.

The area where the discovery was made is about 4 miles from where Jessica Ridgeway disappeared.

SUPERIOR, Colo. (CBS4) – The hunt for a 10-year-old girl moved from her neighborhood in Westminster to Superior after the discovery of a backpack and water bottle believed belong to the child.
 
Jessica Ridgeway disappeared on her way to school Friday morning. She never met her friends in the park that morning.
 
The search shifted to Superior near Andrews and Alpha on Sunday after a homeowner found a water bottle and backpack on the sidewalk.
 
“Now investigators are working with that backpack. We do have reason to believe that it is directly associated with this case. We’re working with the family to make those confirmations,” Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said.
 
Police also taped off an area with a paper bag was found. It’s not clear what was in the bag or how it’s relevant to the case.

CNN) -- Colorado police searching for a missing 10-year-old girl said Sunday they found her backpack in a subdivision more than six miles away from her home, their first break in the case.
 
Police would not say what items were in the bag belonging to Jessica Ridgeway, who has been missing since Friday, except that some of the items had her name on them.
 
A homeowner in a subdivision in Superior found the bag on the sidewalk outside his house about 6.4 miles from the girl's hometown of Westminster. Both towns are along the Denver-Boulder Turnpike.
 
"We're trying to determine when it got there, why it got there," Westminster Police Investigator Trevor Materasso said, adding it's a big break in the case.
 
A bloodhound is being used at the scene where the bag was found, Materasso said.
 
Police had not previously been searching for Jessica in the area. They are now interviewing nearby residents, Materasso said.

I have to believe that the police had put out that she would have been carrying this backpack? I mean she had to have carried it with her everyday. Althought I cannot remember reading that in the AMBER ALERT.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — After two days of searching, more clues are turning up in the case of a missing Colorado 10-year old.
 
That little girl has ties to the Kansas City metro.
 
Family members including that girls father say they didn’t know about  her disappearnce until police arrived on their doorsteps Friday evening.  The family says they immediately let officers in to search for clues since they have nothing to hide.

“The police showed up on my porch looking for Jeremiah, Jessica’s dad,” Donna Moss said. She says police searched the house, but found no clues in the case.

She disappeared on her way to the bus stop Friday morning.  From my understanding that is three blocks from her home, she never made it there.

Her back pack was found today about 6 miles away from where she was last seen.

Who knows how it got there?  Maybe it was planted to throw police off on the search area, or maybe her attacker threw it out (from a moving vehicle) just to get rid of evidence?

I went to bed thinking about Jessica last night and got up this morning to see if there were any new developments.    I hope we get some GOOD news today. 

I know this could happen to anyone's child.  Life is just not perfect.  Still, we have to do what we can to protect our kids.  My son is a large ten year old... very strong, fast, and athletic.  He's already taller than me standing at 5'4".  I still will not let him walk alone to the bus in the morning.  He asked this morning again and I had to say no because the bus stop is .25 mile away and I can't see it from our house. 

There are predators in every city and town.  I hope to see the day when our laws and public awareness change so that we enact a cleaning of this scourge from our neighborhoods. 

Lord, protect Jessica.  Send your angels to be with her and her Mom and Dad.  Shine your light down upon this perpetrator so everyone sees who and what he is, that he may be caught and prevented from doing this ever again.

WESTMINSTER — The search for missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway continues, with Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso briefing the media Monday.

He said 12 agencies and 125 people will be searching a triangular area from Colo. 128 (West 120th Avenue) to Colo. 93 then back along U.S. 36, including Eldorado Canyon.

Materasso said similar resources to what were used Saturday will be used Monday. No volunteers are needed for the search, but he asked those wishing to help to distribute fliers of Jessica. A new flier was prepared Monday.

He said he wants the public to focus on Jessica's facial features, not necessarily the clothes she was wearing on Friday.

"Remember what she looks like," he said.

Jessica Ridgeway, the 10-year old girl who went missing in Colorado on Friday morning, has a lot of people searching for her. The teams–over 100 volunteers–are now expanding their search area after her backpack was found in a neighborhood over six miles from her home.

Jessica was last seen walking to school on Friday morning; her mother, who works the night shift, went to bed and never knew that her daughter didn’t make it to class. A phone call from school officials that afternoon, letting her know that Jessica had been absent, was the first clue she had that something wasn’t right. A search was immediately organized, but now the party is expanding the area to include open fields between Westminster–where she’s from–and Superior.
 
On Saturday night, a man and his wife left their home a little before seven. When they returned after midnight, they noticed a backpack near their house. Not knowing about the Amber Alert for Jessica, or thinking anything was unusual–there are several kids in the neighborhood–the couple ignored it until the next day, when it still hadn’t been claimed. An investigation turned up a keychain and water bottle with Jessica’s name on them, and the man posted to the town’s listserv that he’d found someone’s bag, hoping it would catch the attention of someone who knew the owner.

The message read: “Children’s backpack. Found this morning on the side walk at Andrew Drive and Alpha Court. Water bottle has ‘Jessica Ridgeway’ name on it. Come and get it.”
 
A reader recognized the name and pointed out the Amber Alert to the man, who called police.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — FOX31 Denver has learned that Jeremiah Bryant, the father of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, is currently on felony criminal probation.
 
According to documents obtained by FOX31 investigative reporter Josh Bernstein, Bryant was recently convicted of second degree domestic assault in Missouri’s Jackson County. He was sentenced to three years probation, ordered not to have any contact with the victim and required to attend a domestic violence intervention program.

Bryant was arrested in February. He pleaded guilty to one count of domestic assault. According to prosecutors, he was romantically involved with the victim in the assault case. Court records indicate he choked the victim, whose name has been redacted from the files.
 
Bryant received a suspended imposition, which means the case will be dropped and the conviction will be removed from his record if he complies with the terms of his probation.

He has told several Missouri media outlets that he is devastated to hear his daughter has gone missing, making him the first of Ridgeway’s family members to make a public statement.

I can't stand seeing that we have another little girl missing.  It makes me so paranoid about my own kids.  I hardly let them out of my sight now.  Breaks my heart for her mom.

Officers and search crews from 12 different Colorado agencies -- as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement -- continue to search for 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway as the crews began expanding their search to the open space areas west of Superior this morning.

After finding a backpack that reportedly contained a water bottle with the girl's name written on it Sunday, the search for Ridgeway moved from her neighborhood in Westminster to Superior.

Crews on Monday will be searching the open space areas bordered by U.S. 36 to the east, Colo. 93 to the west and Colo. 128 to the south, as well as Eldorado Canyon, according to Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — The mother of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway has not spoken to the media about her daughter’s disappearance.

Sarah Ridgeway emerged from her home in Westminster early Monday evening but she did not speak to FOX31 Denver reporter Justin Joseph. She and Jessica’s father, Jeremiah Bryant of Kansas City, have asked for privacy during the investigation.

Jessica’s grandmother, Christine Ridgeway, says the family is close and rallying around the girl’s mother.

Louisville pastor has organized dual prayer gatherings in Superior and Westminster for missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Chris Cote, lead pastor of Rock Creek Church, said the “Light Up the Night for Jessica” gatherings will take place at the same time at Community Park in Superior, at Indiana Street and Coalton Avenue, and at Kensington Park in Westminster, at Countryside Drive and Moore Street.

“We're asking every participant to bring a flashlight and shine them up into the sky,” Cote said. “These are two communities doing everything they can to find her.”

He said people shouldn't bring candles to the events.

Cote said there will be clergy at each gathering leading the events and that people are encouraged to wear purple and green ribbons.

FBI, Police search homes, cars in Jessica Ridgeway’s neighborhood Monday

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — FBI agents along with Westminster police investigators searched inside an outside a home early Monday evening just two doors down from where 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway lives.
 
Jessica disappeared Friday morning when she left her house near 107th and Moore St. She was walking to school, but she never arrived there.
 
FOX31 Denver’s Justin Joseph reports two police cars pulled up to the house at about 5 p.m. Officers went up to the front door and knocked on it.
 
No one answered, so they went to the garbage cans on the side of the house and started going through them.
 
Joseph reports that 15 minutes later the person who lives at the home came out and investigators went inside. They came out 10 minutes after that and began looking through a red and white pickup truck in the driveway.
 
FBI agents arrived at the home a few minutes later and all of them went inside the house.
 
Joseph reports two sex offenders live near the home that was the subject of this particular visit from law enforcement.

SUPERIOR -- A Superior resident who helped discover what turned out to be missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway's backpack said he and his wife first noticed the bag sitting on the sidewalk next to their home just after midnight Saturday -- more than 12 hours before it came to the attention of authorities.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, said he could see the backpack wasn't his family's, and, given the hour of night, decided not to deal with it until morning.

"It was out of place, so that we noted it, but not out of place enough that we got out and took a look at it," he said Monday, noting that kids in the suburban Rock Creek neighborhood sometimes leave out bikes and other belongings.

He said he and his wife did not remember seeing the backpack when they left their house at the intersection of Andrew Drive and Alpha Court earlier in the evening -- around 6:45 p.m. -- on Saturday.

The next morning, the man said he noticed the bag was still there and he and a neighbor checked it out. He said the backpack appeared to have been placed deliberately in a standing-up position on the sidewalk rather than tossed haphazardly.

"Just like you'd set a bag down," he said.

Police say the search for Jessica wrapped up Monday with no significant leads. “We really want the community to recognize you are going to see a number of police out in open areas out in open spaces,” says Westminster police spokesman investigator Trevor Materasso.
 
Searchers spread out all over Jefferson County, including parts of Superior where police say they found Jessica’s backpack on Sunday. They say a water bottle with her name on it was in the backpack, which was sitting on a sidewalk in a Superior neighborhood.
 
The backpack was at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Monday, undergoing crime lab tests that police hope could provide a break in the case.
 
“There’s a lot of focus on the backpack,” Materasso says. “It is a pivotal piece in the investigation.”

The search for Jessica Ridgeway is getting national attention. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent a team of experts to Westminster as soon as they heard of Jessica’s disappearance on Friday.
 
And Jessica’s disappearance caught the attention of America’s Most Wanted.

Officials cover new ground in the search for Jessica Ridgeway

WESTMINSTER — Investigators collected DNA evidence Monday from the home of missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway — potentially important evidence as they carefully examined the girl's backpack.

The search for Jessica stretched through a third full day Monday — this time in an area northwest of her home surrounding the neighborhood where her backpack and water bottle were discovered.

Representatives of 12 agencies — roughly 125 people — searched in a triangular area bounded by U.S. 36, Colorado 93 and Colorado 128, said Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso.

Materasso said Jessica's backpack, discovered Sunday outside of a house in Superior, was an important piece of evidence. Work was underway to collect DNA from family members to compare it with evidence collected from the backpack.

Jessica's grandmother said Monday she dreads a time when police would use a DNA sample.

"God, I hope we don't have to (use) that," said Christine Ridgeway.

Family mulls statement
Jessica's mother, a night-shift worker, told police she last saw her daughter walking toward school Friday morning. She reported the girl missing later in the afternoon when she woke to find a phone message saying Jessica hadn't arrived at Witt Elementary School, about a mile away at 10255 W. 104th Drive in Westminster.

On Monday, Jessica's grandmother said the family is close and rallying around Jessica's mother, Sarah Ridgeway. Family members have been talking about putting out a statement and may do so later, Christine Ridgeway said.

"We are doing a family conference right now, getting our ducks in a row," she said. "We are not letting Sarah decide on this by herself."

Materasso said Monday there were no suspects in the case. But "we do not have reason to believe a person is going around abducting children," he added.

Jessica's father, Jeremiah Bryant, and great-grandmother Dana Moss live in Independence, Mo.

Moss told media in Missouri that she consented to a search of her house because "we'd do anything in the world to get her back."

"Safely, alive — however we can have her back," Moss said.

She added: "Jessica is a beautiful, bright little girl. She was here about six weeks ago on vacation with her mom and grandma and other great-grandma."

JANE VELEZ-MITCHELL, HOST: Tonight, 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway vanishes on her way to school. We`ve got breaking news just in, including a sketch that we`ve just received from law enforcement about the man who -- there he is -- was allegedly, purportedly, according to kids, trying to lure kids towards his car. So we`re going to bring you the latest breaking news just in, in just seconds. Stay right there.

VELEZ-MITCHELL (voice-over): Tonight, the desperate search for a missing Colorado girl takes a frightening turn. An army of volunteers search for 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, last seen Friday walking to school. This as a homeowner makes an ominous discovery, finding a huge clue more than six miles from her home. Tonight, where is Jessica?

Could reports of a man trying to lure kids into his car hold the key to her mysterious disappearance? We`re investigating, and I`m taking your calls.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Bloodhounds searched again today. Police have constant patrols, and neighbors want everyone to know what happened.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Tonight, breaking news in the frantic search taking place as we speak for a missing fourth-grader. She vanished on her way to school four long days ago. Ten-year-old Jessica Ridgeway has been missing since Friday. The clock is ticking.

Good evening. I`m Jane Velez-Mitchell coming to you live.

Police discovered a huge clue yesterday. A local homeowner found Jessica`s backpack and water bottle more than six miles away from her home. But how did they get there?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We don`t know when the bag was put there. Obviously over the weekend, kids are out of school. There is the chance that -- that kids may have gone by, playing, riding bikes. We`re not going to go into detail just -- just for the purpose of the investigation. We`re not going to discuss the details of the backpack or, again, the contents.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Jessica`s mom told us every school morning Jessica walks three blocks to meet up with friends before the whole group walks the rest of the way together to Witt Elementary School, which is about a mile from her home.

When Jessica did not show up for class Friday, the school called her mom. But since her mom works overnights, the mother was asleep and did not get the message until late Friday afternoon. Cops say because of that delay, they lost valuable time.

Neighbors say they cannot believe this is happening.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It`s just awful, it`s awful. That she`s gone. So we`re just -- any of us would give whatever to do whatever we could to help to bring her home.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Police and an army of volunteers were out searching again today with bloodhounds for any sign of this precious child. We can all help by getting the word out, because by now, Jessica could be anywhere.

And tonight, an ominous development. We`re learning that just three weeks ago, students in the area reported seeing a man in a dark sedan trying to lure kids close to his car. And we just got this sketch moments ago of what this potential abductor looks like. Now, could there be a connection? Remember, this sketch is not necessarily the person who is responsible for the disappearance of Jessica. This is a sketch that police have put together based on what kids said about a man trying to lure them to his car. Something -- about three weeks ago, it occurred.

Straight out to reporter Marc Stewart from KMGH. Marc, this little girl`s been missing four days now. A lot of breaking news developments. What have you learned tonight?

MARC STEWART, REPORTER, KMGH: Jane, the big headline from here is that everything is on the table. That case you mentioned about a potential abductor a few weeks ago, that is on the table along with everything else. I talked to a source very close to this investigation who tells me nothing is being ruled out.

But here`s what`s of concern. And you will understand from covering many of these cases. This little girl, Jessica, is seen as emotionally strong. She didn`t have anything in her past that would suggest she would run away. And, even though her parents are involved in a custody dispute, which is very common for these abductions to take place, there is nothing in that history that would indicate something as a family abduction, as we often see these cases, would happen.

For that reason, everything is on the table. That`s why they are trying to get that little girl`s picture out as much as possible, along with this man who was perhaps involved with the case just a few weeks ago in the same area -- Jane.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, as you mentioned this man, let me go to my producer, Selin Darkalstanian. You just told us about this sketch. I just got it on my Blackberry moments before we went to air.

Selin, what are you learning tonight from the school district and law enforcement?

SELIN DARKALSTANIAN, PRODUCER (via phone): That`s right, Jane. I literally just got off the phone with the police. And they`re saying that there was two separate incidents, not one but two incidents of a child being approached by a stranger offering candy and asking them to get into the car.

And so these two incidents were reported to the school by the children. The school then went to the police. The police thought that this was very credible, what they had seen reported.

And then what the school did is they sent letters home in the children`s backpack to 35 to 40 schools in their district. They sent letters home to the parents, warning them that these incidents had occurred and giving them, you know, stranger danger tips on how to speak to their children about being careful.

So that is what the school had just told me they did. And we just saw the sketch of the male that the two kids had reported, you know, being approached by.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, let`s show that sketch again. There, just released, is this individual connected to the disappearance of this precious child, Jessica Ridgeway?

I want to go to Wendy Murphy, former prosecutor. Again, this information just coming in. This sketch just released by law enforcement. Now we`re learning it`s not one incident, but two incidents, where somebody who fit this is description is telling kids, "Hey, come to my car. I`ve got some candy for you." And now this child disappears on the way to school.

WENDY MURPHY, FORMER PROSECUTOR: Yes. I mean, look, it`s a parent`s worst nightmare that it might be a guy like this, the stranger in the car trying to lure the child. Presumably, this is a child who`s been told more than once in her life never to go with such a guy. You know, it`s an old trick, right? Either the puppy or the candy.

And good parents and even, you know, not-so-vigilant parents know enough to say to the kids when that happens, run and scream and yell. So one hope is that that happened with this girl and that this is not the story behind the story.

I always worry first not about the stranger so much as who would have been motivated to touch a child like this and who in the area where her backpack was found, which is six miles from her house -- that`s a pretty good distance -- who might be in that area that knows something about this family? That`s what I worry about.

I read the story that said they don`t think this was an abduction. But they did use an Amber Alert, Jane, which means they think her life is in danger. That doesn`t square with me. Her life is in danger, but she wasn`t abducted. What do cops really think happened? That sounds inconsistent to me.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, let`s talk about this. Jessica`s parents are divorced. Her dad lives in Missouri. Police say they do not suspect any family involvement in Jessica`s disappearance.

But there is this, and this is the father. According to one of our affiliates, K-D -- T-V-R, Jessica`s dad, Jeremiah Bryant, is on felony probation in Missouri for two separate domestic violence arrests.

And Jon Lieberman, investigative reporter, he was reportedly in court on Friday in Missouri for a child custody hearing. Now Jessica disappears in Colorado. Isn`t that an alibi for the dad, because you cannot be in two states at once?

JON LIEBERMAN, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: Well, it could be an alibi. But another theory, another possible hypothesis could be that the father`s involved, but he had somebody else involved with him, perhaps hiring somebody. That`s just a theory.

But police are looking at everything. They`re looking at familial involvement, the family. They`re also looking at registered sex offenders in the area. You`re looking at more than 80 sex offenders in this general area, as well.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes, listen, Marc Stewart, the police have said that they do not believe this is family involvement. By the way, we tried to reach this dad. Unable to. He`s invited on our show anytime. Marc, your thoughts on this aspect?

STEWART: I just want to elaborate on something that Wendy brought up: why was an Amber Alert issued? And the reason, according to police, is this: mom works the overnight shift. She saw Jessica leave at 7:30 in the morning. She went to bed. Got a phone call hours later saying, your daughter had not shown up at school.

But Mom only got that message later on in the day, realized almost eight hours later what had happened. That`s when she called school. That`s when things moved into action. And that`s when the Amber Alert was issued...

VELEZ-MITCHELL: All right.

STEWART: ... because so much time had passed she had not been seen. So that`s why there was concern.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Marc Stewart, thank you so much for your reporting from Colorado where this is all going down.

You know what? This is ridiculous in today`s day and age with high- tech, we need to get to parents immediately or the cops when an elementary school child does not show up at school.

We`re going to talk about that as well on the other side of the break and take your calls.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Somehow the backpack got there. So just keeping your eyes open and creating awareness. I mean, I think the guy there didn`t actually even know it was connected to this. So I think if more people can be aware, just might notice things differently.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: The other breaking development in this child`s disappearance is that her backpack and water bottle were spotted on the sidewalk Saturday night, six miles from the home where she was last seen.

Now, this child goes missing Friday morning, and the homeowner says, well, he didn`t see the backpack when he left Saturday evening to go out for the evening. But when he returned late Saturday night, around midnight, he sees the backpack.

So T.J. Ward, private investigator, to me that says, whoa, maybe this child remained in the area with whoever took her, and this person then at some point on Saturday evening throws that backpack and water bottle out on the sidewalk.

WARD, PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR: One of the things, Jane, that hasn`t been mentioned about the backpack, the police are being quiet about, maybe there was a cell phone that this little girl had that may have been in that backpack. And if so, the police will be able to triangulate where that phone has been and what time it got there and what time. So that may be a possibility of why they`re not discussing the backpack.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, also DNA. I mean, we could get DNA. You could get fingerprints.

WARD: Exactly, exactly.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: If this perpetrator had this backpack in his hands, and I say "he" because -- it could be she or he. We don`t know if this is the same person. This is the person who was luring kids, allegedly, with candy to his car a couple of weeks ago. But if it is the same person or if it`s not the same person, whoever`s responsible for her, may have left his fingerprints on the backpack.

I want to go to somebody who really understands what this family is going through: Diena Thompson, one of my heroes. Her beautiful, precious 7-year-old daughter, Somer, vanished while innocently walking home from school back in 2009. Somer was with her siblings and simply ran ahead. It`s a gut-wrenching tragedy. Her body was found two days later in a landfill.

This neighborhood man, Jarred Harrell, a monster, ended up pleading guilty to Somer`s death. He lured Somer to his house with a puppy.

Diena, again, you`re one of my heroes, created a foundation in your daughter`s name. What are your thoughts as you listen to this story about Jessica Ridgeway disappearing on the way to school?

DIENA THOMPSON, CREATED FOUNDATION TO HONOR MURDERED DAUGHTER SOMER (via phone): It`s gut-wrenching, obviously. We are just a little under two weeks until it`s actually Somer`s anniversary. So anytime something like this happens in October, it is a little extra close to home.

But I am praying, obviously, for the child`s safe return and also want to implore the people to let them see that it just happens that quick.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. What about this man luring children with candy, Diena?

THOMPSON: Well, you know, they have Web sites set up, these animals do. And they share their information with each other. And even if he`s not involved with Jessica`s disappearance, I definitely think that they need to still find that person, because obviously, there`s a threat.
VELEZ-MITCHELL: What I`d like to know, Jon Lieberman -- and I`ll bring Wendy in this, as well -- why are we just getting this photograph now? It was a couple of weeks ago that this guy was going around and trying to lure kids with candy.

Now we have a child who`s missing and now -- and I`ve got to bring this to Wendy, because my blood is boiling. Why didn`t every single homeowner and parent in this entire region have this description? Why are we getting it right now?

MURPHY: You know, Jane, my only guess is that cops are really worried and school administrators are really worried about getting parents into a frenzy. I mean, I`ve been in this kind of situation with my own kids when something happens or they`re suspicious about a character in town. The last thing in the world they want to do is make people upset, because it makes everybody anxious in the community. Gives the community a bad name. So they try to keep things on the down-low, hoping this was just some weirdo passing through town.

The problem is it is too late. I`m not sure anybody can at this point can remember back to seeing that guy around when this poor little kid went missing.

And by the way, I just want to add one quick thing about the location of the backpack. If this were a stranger, this is just common sense for a minute here. If this were a stranger, no way is a guy in a car going to dump a backpack. That`s just too much evidence against him. That`s what makes me suspicious about the story of the possibility of this being a stranger. A stranger is not going to be stupid enough to leave crime evidence like that six miles...

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well -- well -- yes...

LIEBERMAN: Unless, unless, unless -- unless the perp is rushed. For example, somebody startles them, comes up and sees him with this girl. At that point, he might discard evidence quickly just to get out of that situation. But we don`t know if Jessica was actually there where the backpack was found or if this person just dumped the backpack.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And not only that, but people who do these kinds of heinous things -- and let`s hope -- let`s hope that this is all a big misunderstanding and she shows up safe and sound. But people who do these heinous things are not bright, and they don`t think logically. They`re -- they`re sick.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But a letter did go out to parents about a man in a dark sedan, two incidents, trying to lure kids to his car, on two separate occasions. And this is the just-released sketch from law enforcement. This is what that man may look like.

Let`s go out to the phone lines. Kathy, Oklahoma, thanks for your patience. Kathy, what`s your question or thought?

CALLER: Hi, Jane. I don`t understand this. I live a block from an elementary school. I see children walking, little girls, all by themselves. You never -- she shouldn`t have went to sleep. Should have made sure for that child`s safety before she went to bed, because this is on the news every day. And if you care about your children, see to it they get to school, because it can happen in an instant.

Now she can sleep in every morning. She doesn`t have that worry.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, now, I understand your thoughts. But I have to say that this mother is probably going through hell undoubtedly right now.

And she works. She`s a hard-working woman, works the night shift. And she comes home at 7:30 in the morning. She sees her child off to school. And so she`s trying to make money to put food on the table. And then she goes to sleep.

Now, the school called. The school is the one that called her. And I guess they left a message to say, "Your child didn`t show up." In fact, one of our producers who has a young child said she often gets these -- she has heard in the past this message, and usually there`s a good explanation.

But my question is -- and Jon Lieberman, in this day and age of texting, of e-mails, of all sorts of ways to get information across, can you really just leave a voice mail when a 10-year-old doesn`t show up at school and there`s no note that says she`s sick, doesn`t more need to be done? This is a call to action for me.

LIEBERMAN: Well, it is troubling. And hindsight is always 20/20, and the school generally believes, like you said, the child is sick or something like that.

One lesson to parents here is this: it`s that you should not let your children do the same routine every single day. Predators watch routines. This girl every day walked three blocks to the park and then walked with her same group of friends another mile, which is a long way, to school. But urge your kids to vary up their routine. Because this is the type of activity that predators look for.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: We`re covering more of this on the other side. We`ve got new information just in. Stay right there.

But first, our "Shocking Video of the Day." It`s absolutely bizarre. This is an all-out brawl between two wedding parties as these two receptions collide. And it`s all caught on camera.

This got so out of control, cops had to literally use batons. You could see them using batons to break it up. They even Tasered one guy, force cops say was justified. There`s screaming. There`s yelling. There`s fighting. Three people were arrested, and tragically, one man died of a heart attack.

So what a way to start off two sets of lives together, with violence and craziness. I`ve got to wonder, do you think alcohol might have been involved? You think? Perhaps? Possibly?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: For Jessica Ridgeway`s neighbors, any sign of the 10-year-old girl is better than nothing.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It`s just awful, it`s awful, that she`s gone.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Bloodhounds searched again today. Police have constant patrols, and neighbors want everyone to know what happened.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Police say they do not have a person of interest at this time.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Agencies that are assisting us today will be using approximately 125 people to search that area. We still will be searching and conducting canvasses using dogs in and around the neighborhood of Jessica`s home.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Where is Jessica Ridgway? This beautiful 10-year-old girl walked to school Friday morning. She was going to go three blocks, meet up with a group of her friends. Then they together walk a mile to school. She never made it those three blocks.

And now we`re getting breaking news just in, information that a couple of weeks prior to this, the district sent out a warning about this man, this is a composite sketch that was just released by police, a description that kids, I believe, gave of a man trying to lure children to his car with candy.

I want to go to Selin Darkalstanian, our producer, who`s been on the phone with the school district and with local authorities. What have you learned -- Selin?

SELIN DARKALSTANIAN, HLN PRODUCER (via telephone): The police are releasing additional information on this suspect who was approaching children and trying to lure them into his car by offering candy. They`re saying that he has a vehicle that`s royal blue, dark blue vehicle, similar to the blue worn by the University of Kentucky, a four-door sedan possibly from the mid-90s and may have dents on the right side of the door. And they`re saying this is the car that has been driven, that has been described by the children of the suspect who was circling these schools.
So they want all the parents know that -- you know, to remind their children to yell, shout, run and immediately tell an adult if he or she is approached. That`s what the police department is releasing.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. Why are we just getting this composite sketch now? This happened a couple of weeks ago, is my understanding -- something like three weeks ago. There were two incidents. Why did we get this literally a minute before we went on the air?

DARKALSTANIAN: I think that the police -- they were saying -- the description they were getting from the children were two different types of descriptions so it`s taken them a while to put the sketch together. The police department also told me there were different rumors flying around about the suspect so they wanted to put out one sketch.

But that`s a good question. Why now? Is it too little too late?

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Absolutely. And I`ve got to go to Diena Thompson. You were the founder of the Sommer Thompson Foundation. You try to protect children. Your precious daughter was abducted and killed. Does that upset you? I mean I think in today`s high-tech world, we need to get all this information disseminated immediately to all the parents and additionally when a child doesn`t show up in the morning, especially a 10-year-old. There can`t just be a phone message left because people do go to sleep. There`s got to be some kind of protocol where police are immediately notified so that there is no delay if a child is abducted, Diena.

THOMPSON: I completely agree. We cannot hope that things are going to go all right or things are going to be ok. And our children should be afforded the opportunity to be allowed to walk to school because that`s the right thing for them to be able to do.

But I agree with you totally that if your child doesn`t show up to school, the school shouldn`t be calling at the end of the day to say, you have this student missing today. We need to be calling as soon as the kid`s not showing up because sometimes parents don`t call and let the school know that their child is sick. And I`d rather know even if my child were skipping, I would rather know than not know and have this lapse in time where we have this much time already ahead on that clock that we weren`t able to look for this child.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Diena, I`m so pleased that you agreed to come on and talk to us tonight. We`re all over this story. We are searching for Jessica Ridgway and we`re going to stay on top of it tomorrow.

WESTMINSTER —  Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said Tuesday morning that air support and dogs would be used in the fourth day of searching for the missing 10-year-old girl.

He said that various agencies — including federal immigration and drug agents — were assisting because of their specific training in search and recovery.

"Don't focus on the agency," Materasso said. "They are just resources deployed to help us." He added that all the different uniforms were just part of the coordinated effort.

Two more photos of Jessica Ridgeway will be released today, as well as a video her family provided.

As he did yesterday, Materasso urged people to pay attention to Jessica's facial features, not her glasses or clothing. He said specifically to note that she has a gap between her two front teeth and a sore at the bridge of her nose where her glasses sit.

He stressed how important the community is in getting fliers posted and spreading the word about the search.

"There's a chance someone might see her in passing," he said. He urged anyone with information to call 303-658-4336 or email the tip line at PDAmberAlert@Cityof Westminster.us

He said that last night a dive team searched nearby bodies of water to "rule out" those locations. He made clear that the searches were not based on tips or evidence there.

He said investigators are talking with family and friends to "learn more about Jessica" to help them determine whether this is a runaway or abduction case.

In response to a reporter's question, he said the family is fully cooperating with the investigation.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - New video of Jessica Ridgeway, the 10-year-old Westminster girl missing since Friday, has been released to the public in the hopes that someone will recognize her.

Authorities continue to search for the girl who went missing while walking to school Friday morning.

During a 6:30 a.m. news conference Tuesday police said they will focus on canvassing the neighborhood where she disappeared and looking at several open space areas they have not yet looked at.

Police plan to release more photos of Jessica as well as a video of her on Tuesday. Authorities have said they hope the public will burn the image of her face into memory should someone come across her.

Monday agents with the FBI searched homes around Jessica's house.

7NEWS reporter Lance Hernandez talked with residents who said they voluntarily let investigators search their property.

"My attitude is check. Go ahead, check. Do what you need to do," said neighbor Kathleen Rodriguez. "I know she's not here, but they need to know that."

The agents were exploring if the girl might have taken shelter in a parked car during the cold weekend, if she snuck into a house or garage or if someone might be hiding her, homeowners told Hernandez.

Residents said the agents were also asking, "Did you hear anything out of the ordinary-- any noises or slamming doors? Or have you seen anything out of the ordinary?" Hernandez recounted.

Neighbor Kerry Viney said the investigators also asked if he'd noticed suspicious vehicles or any workers who had recently come into the neighborhood.

Meanwhile, Jessica's mother, Sarah Ridgeway, came out of her home Monday evening, and made an emotional journey. As friends supported her arms, the mother walked down the street where Jessica was last on Friday morning as she left for school.

Today we continue to work additional ground searches, canine tracks and neighborhood canvasses. We have currently completed a canvass of 54% of homes within our search area. Approximately 400 homes will be canvassed as part of this effort.
 
It is likely that many homes will be canvassed multiple times. This is not unusual, nor does i
t indicate that the homes are the subject of an investigation. Statistics from prior incidents reveal that 40-60% of individuals do not realize that they may have witnessed something that relates to an abduction.

We continue to actively investigate every tip that comes in. We are currently processing over 450 unique tips.
 
Over 15 local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are assisting with this investigation.

The family of #jessicaridgeway will be addressing the public via taped interview. Police hope to have that arranged and released by 1pm.

That backback to me indicates Jessica's dad is not involved because even if he involved a third party in abducting Jessica that party would have no reason to later leave the backpack in another location.

If a local has abducted her or if another person who lived with Jessica harmed her then the backpack appearing six miles away to throw off the investigation makes more sense.

It does bother me a little that no one who lived with Jessica has made a public appearance thus far.  The public walk down the same street Jessica was last seen on (according to her mother) that her mother took with people supporting her arms bothers me a little too because it seems more for show than an effective means of locating her daughter.

WESTMINSTER - The family of Jessica Ridgeway - the 10-year-old girl who went missing on Oct. 5 - spoke out on Tuesday as a heart-wrenching, statewide search rages on for their precious girl.

Jessica's family spoke to 9NEWS Reporter Dave Delozier Tuesday afternoon for the first time since Jessica was reported missing on her walk to school.
 
They encouraged community members to continue to help in the search attempts and thanked everyone for their donations of time, money, food and effort.
 
"We are strong, and we're just going to get stronger," Jessica's mom Sarah told 9NEWS' Delozier. "[Jessica's] my rock. She's all of our rock. When you're down, she'll come around, make you laugh, hug [and] kiss [you or] dance."
 
Her mom says Jessica is the light of the household. Even with all the people in the home, her mother says the house it too quiet without her exuberant spirit.
 
"I want her to come walking back through that door," Sarah said. "I need her to come walking back through that door."
 
Her mom said math is one of Jessica's favorite subjects and she would never miss school.

"It's not anything I want any parent to ever go through," Sarah said.
 
However, Sarah remains hopeful.
 
"We are a strong family," Sarah said. "We will get through this. We will find her and take care of her."
 
Jessica's father Jeremiah spoke also on Tuesday - echoing Sarah's sentiments and concerns.
 
"I just want to find my daughter. I just want her back home," Jeremiah said. "It's by far the worst thing I've ever been through - still is."

New Ridgeway Video Released, Mother & Father Speak Out

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – The mother and father of missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway addressed the media Tuesday afternoon.
 
Jessica’s mother Sarah Ridgeway said her daughter is the light of her life and was a very mature 10-year-old.
 
“She does everything on her own because she wants to make herself look like she’s a grownup,” Sarah Ridgeway said. “She wants to be a teenager before she’s a teenager.”
 
Sarah Ridgeway said she had planned to talk about Jessica’s disappearance on Sunday but then her daughter’s backpack and water bottle were found in neighboring Superior.

“We knew (Jessica’s father) was coming into town this morning, so we wanted to wait for (him) to get here. He’s part of our extended family,” she said.
 
Jessica’s father, Jeremiah Bryant, lives in Independence, Mo. He arrived in Colorado on Tuesday and also spoke at the news conference.
 
“This is by far the worst thing I’ve ever been through,” Bryant said. “I don’t know what to do. I just want to find my daughter, I just want her back home.”

Jessica Ridgeway's mother along with her father, who lives in Missouri, also planned to make a plea for her return in an interview with a Denver television station Tuesday.

Denver media reported that an FBI evidence team arrived at the girl's home after family members left to record the interview. FBI spokesman Dave Joly confirmed some team members were at the home but declined to discuss what exactly they were doing.

Police spokesman Trevor Materasso implied that investigators were focusing attention on a possible abduction but refused to comment on what techniques police were using as they try to find her.

"We don't want to miss anything. We're going to cover our tracks," Materasso said.

He said her family has cooperated in the investigation from the start.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – The father of the missing 10-year-old girl from Westminster said the FBI asked him if he thought the girl’s mother could be involved in her daughter’s disappearance.
 
Jessica Ridgeway’s father, Jeremiah Bryant, said he was approached by the FBI after his daughter went missing and they asked questions about Jessica’s mother, Sarah Ridgeway.
 
“The FBI, they asked me if I thought she did it. I told them there’s no way that I would ever believe that,” Bryant said. “It’s just the same as she would tell them that I wouldn’t do something like that … I don’t see how any parent could do something like that to their child.”

Bryant lives in Independence, Mo., and traveled to Colorado to talk with the media on Tuesday.
 
An FBI evidence team went to the Ridgeways’ home in Westminster after family members left to record the interview for television, but it wasn’t clear what they might be looking for. Investigators could be seen from Copter4 searching the Ridgeways’ yard and a neighbor’s yard.

A CBS4 photographer witnessed the FBI as they were wrapping up their search and said investigators some items in bags from the Ridgeway house.

According to Richmond County Court in Independence, there was a civil action filed on behalf of Sarah and Jessica Ridgeway for “non-support” against Jeremiah Bryant this October. The action was filed in Colorado and probably sealed.

One thing I notice is that there are no cars parked along the roadway anywhere in your google pics.  If there were a perp parked and waiting for Jessica he or she would have stood a great chance of seeming out of place.  If the perp drove by and scooped Jessica up that would have been risky considering the many houses lining the streets but this scenario is not out of the question because some perps are so driven by their need to harm a child they will do almost anything.

Still, why would they leave the backpack six miles away in a fashion that would seem they wanted the backpack to be found?  At that point he or she could have disposed of the backpack in a manner that it would never have been recovered.

Makes me believe the perp lives in Jessica's neighborhood and wanted to draw invetigators attention away from the neighborhood.

The parents of a 10-year-old Colorado girl who has been missing since last Friday spoke out for the first time on Tuesday, denying any involvement in her disappearance.

'I know I didn't do anything. Everybody that's here knows I didn't do anything,' said Jessica Ridgeway's mother, Sarah, surrounded by relatives dressed in purple - her daughter's favorite color. 

She added, 'Nobody in this room did anything to harm her or a tiny hair on her little head.'

Sarah Ridgeway was joined by ten family members, among them her ex-husband, Jeremiah Bryant, who said that when questioned by the FBI if his former spouse could have anything to do with the 10-year-old's disappearance, he said 'no.'
 
'I don't see how any parent could do something like that to their child,' Bryant added, according to Fox31.

Appearing composed for most of the 38-minute-long pubic statement, the girl's mother told a reporter that she understands that police need to conduct an investigation before they eliminate her from the list of potential suspects.
 
'I know it's something that has to get done,' she said. 'The have to get it out of there.'

WESTMINSTER - Hundreds gathered at two separate vigils in Westminster and Superior Tuesday night to show support for Jessica Ridgeway, the 10-year-old girl who disappeared Friday morning.

The big gathering was at Kensington Park in Westminster. It's estimated around 700 people showed up at the Westminster park.
 
An additional gathered at Rock Creek Superior Community Park in Superior, near the area where Jessica's book bag was found on Sunday.

FOX31 Denver spoke with Bob Pence, a former FBI special agent in charge with more than 30 years of experience. We asked him what investigators are looking for, and are the little girl’s family members suspects in her disappearance?

“At this stage they’re trying to put together what happened here. Timelines, what really occurred, who might be involved. So it’d certainly be determined by what they find for them to say yes or no the family’s involved, the family isn’t,” Pence said.

They searched inside the home and outside looking for any clues about what happened to Jessica.

“It’s vital that they get every piece of evidence that someone saw something, maybe even something minor.”

That’s what Pence says is most important – the community’s help in coming forward with any information that may lead to Jessica’s safe return.

“Maybe just the color of a car, maybe a car, maybe a person, maybe a brief description of the person,” he said.

SUPERIOR - Authorities will continue their search for 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway - who went missing Friday.

According to Westminster spokesperson Trevor Matarasso, the department started talking to Maine police after a significant tip came forward where a tipster claimed they saw a girl matching Jessica's description in a car in Maine on Sunday. Matarasso says they are taking it seriously, as they are all the other tips they have received.
 
Matarasso also said Witt Elementary School - which is where Jessica attended - will be on lockout as the investigation continues. Police requested the lockout because of police activity around the school. What this means for parents is they can come and pick up their kids if they show identification, and kids cannot play outside during recess.

Westminster Police say the department has taken more than 650 phone calls on their tipline regarding Jessica's disappearance. He encouraged residents to keep calling, tweeting, texting their friends and posting on Facebook to make sure people know to keep looking for Jessica.
 
Matarasso said Wednesday during an early-morning press conference land and bodies of water searches will continue on Wednesday. The land searches are focused on around the area where she disappeared. The bodies of water searches are merely precautionary.
 
On Monday afternoon, an 11-year-old girl in Cody, Wyo., was lured into an SUV by a man who approached her and two friends. He told them that he was missing his black lab puppy and asked if they could help him find it, police say.
 
One girl climbed in and he drove away. Later, one of the other children called the police to report the incident.
 
An Amber Alert was issued, and police received a report of a little girl walking down a road just outside Cody. It was the missing girl, and the Amber Alert was canceled.
 
It is unknown at this time whether this Cody case and Jessica's case are connected, however Matarasso confirmed Wednesday they are investigating all angles and are aware of the case.
 
Cody, Wyo. is about 500 miles northwest of Westminster.

DEXTER, Maine - Authorities in Maine have put out a call to stop a car with Colorado plates in connection to the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway.

 KMGH, our Scripps affiliate station in Denver, reports police in the town of Dexter, Maine have issued a statewide alert for a light blue station wagon after a possible sighting of the 10-year-old girl.

A woman saw Jessica’s picture on the internet on Tuesday and alerted police she saw a girl who looked very much like Jessica in the back seat of a light blue Buick station wagon on Sunday, KMGH reported.

WABI-TV, out of Bangor, Maine, reports somebody reported seeing the same vehicle in Harmony, about 14 miles southeast of Dexter.

Sgt. Alan Grinnel, with the Dexter Police Department, told KMGH they have had no confirmation that the girl the woman spotted was Jessica, but authorities there are taking the tip seriously.

 KUSA - A resident reported seeing a girl who resembled missing Westminster 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway in Maine on Sunday, according to reports. After police received that tip, authorities filed a statewide alert for the vehicle described by the woman.

Sgt. Alan Grinnell with the Dexter, Maine Police told 9NEWS the woman told police she saw the girl resembling Ridgeway Sunday afternoon on Spring Street in Dexter - a small town northwest of Bangor in central Maine. Dexter is 2,092 miles from Westminster, Colo.

The witness did not report the sighting to police until Tuesday at 10 a.m. because she did not see the Amber Alert for Jessica on her computer until Tuesday morning, Grinell told 9NEWS Crime and Justice Reporter Anastasiya Bolton.

The woman, who Grinnell will not identify, described the car the girl was seen in as a light-blue Buick station wagon - a mid 1990s model - with Colorado plates. She did not get the plate number.

The car had roof racks and five spoke wheels, Grinnell says.

DENVER -- Authorities searching for a 10-year-old Colorado girl said Wednesday they believe she was abducted by an unknown suspect, and they're confident her parents were not involved.

Jessica Ridgeway was last seen Friday after leaving home to meet friends at a park so they could walk to school together in the Denver suburb of Westminster.

Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said at a news conference Wednesday that police "believe this is an abduction," and the focus of the case is not on Jessica's parents, who are cooperating and have been ruled out as suspects.

Authorities are pursuing tips from five other states, including Maine, where a woman reported seeing a girl resembling Jessica Ridgeway on Sunday.

That tip and others from Maryland, Texas, Nevada and Wyoming are among the hundreds of bits of information that have been passed on to Westminster investigators, Materasso said.

He didn't release details but earlier in the day said police were looking at whether there's a link between Jessica's disappearance and the Monday abduction of an 11-year-old girl in Cody, Wyo. – about 500 miles away.

In that case, a man lured an 11-year-old girl into a sport utility vehicle saying he needed help finding his puppy. She was released about four hours later and found by hunters. Police there say they're looking for a white man between 55 and 60 years old with short, strawberry blond or white hair and a neatly trimmed mustache.

Maine on high alert for missing girl from Colorado

Police say not one but two people in two different towns may have seen 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway. Police say the Colorado girl disappeared on her way to school last week but now theres possible new hope to find her alive, half way across the country in Maine.

Police say they've received multiple reports of a girl matching Ridgeway's description. One in Dexter,  others in Harmony. Dexter police say a woman reported seeing a girl who looks like Ridgeway in a light blue station wagon with Colorado plates in Dexter. That was on Sunday. Though she didn't report it until Tuesday when she learned about the amber alert for Ridgeway.

Dexter police say similar reports came out of Harmony around the same time. Police put out an alert for a light blue, mid-90s station wagon with "fancy," five-spoke chrome wheels.  The vehicle reportedly has a Colorado license plate but they don't know the license plate number. The news comes a day after Ridgeway's family spoke publicly for the first time.

ARVADA — A body has been discovered on Pattridge Park open space in the city of Arvada. However, Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said "we are unable to make a connection to the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway."

Flanked by Arvada police spokeswoman Jill McGranahan, Materasso said they would take no questions.

He said investigators would continue to process the scene through the night and another briefing is planned for early Thursday morning.

Dozens of federal and police investigators have been combing an area near an abandoned mining shack on the Pattridge Park open space in Arvada since about 5 p.m.

FBI agents have set up a command unit in the area and are using a fire truck with its ladder extended to take photos from above.

(DENVER) – Investigators in the case of missing Colorado girl Jessica Ridgeway announced Wednesday that a body was found in Arvada, Colo., just a few miles from the 10-year-old’s home in Westminster. 

Investigators have yet to identify the body, but sources tell ABC News that they believe it is Jessica.

Westminster Police spokesman Trevor Materasso says the body was discovered in a park space.

Earlier Wednesday, authorities cleared Jessica’s parents as suspects in her disappearance.

“At this point in the investigation, after thoroughly looking at the parents, we’re confident that they’re not involved in the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway,” said Materasso. “The focus shifts to an unknown suspect, as we think that she was abducted.”

Hundreds of investigators combed an area around a collapsed building near the Pattridge Park open space in Arvada Wednesday night after a body was discovered, about 11 miles south of where Jessica Ridgeway's backpack was found.

At a hastily called press conference, Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said "we are unable to make a connection to the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway."

Since Saturday, more than 1,000 citizen and law enforcement searchers have combed open spaces around Jessica's Westminster home and near where the backpack was found in the Rock Creek neighborhood.

Wednesday afternoon, federal and police investigators swarmed a grassy area north of West 82nd Avenue and east of the BFI landfill.

The Pattridge Park open space area south of the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge is dotted with abandoned coal mines. The area is favored by road bikers and model airplane flyers on weekends.

It is about seven miles southwest of Jessica's home and several miles south of where Jessica's backpack was found in Superior.

Materasso took no questions and did not answer reporter questions asking why he called the news conference if it wasn't connected to the girl's disappearance?  Also unanswered, was the body that of a male or female?
 
Police blocked off a road leading to Pattridge Park Open Space, just north of Golden, near Highway 93.
A fire truck with a large ladder was being used to light the scene from above the area where the body was found. Photographs were being taken.
 
Highway 93 is closed at Leyden Gulch.

When the people were introduced, the boy was a relative's son; there was one friend, too, in the group.

This sheds light on Jessica's family's interview.  Her mom was being strong and positive in the face of the worst moment of her life.  It was almost as if her dad knew that she was gone.

It has not been clarified who was at home during the night while Jessica was sleeping.  We do know her mom worked all night then came home in the morning and watched as Jessica began her walk to school.  She saw Jessica go around the bend in the road then she went to bed.  Her mom left her phone downstairs so she didn't hear it when the school called to say Jessica was absent.  We do not know if anyone else was home when the school called.

Jessica went missing somewhere between the last her mom saw of her and the park where she was to meet her friends before continuing on to school.

Every day she walked the same route to school and every day she had a certain length of road where she was unaccompanied by anyone.  This is what perps look for when they are looking for a victim. 

When lurings are taking place in a community a letter should go out to all schools, then to all parents of children within those schools.  Along with the letter of warning should be a list of things parents can do to try and keep their children safe such as not letting your child walk alone on the same route every day.

May this POS be caught.  Soon.  Shining that light on him so he has no where to run and no where to hide like the cockroach he is.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - Authorities in Colorado offered few new details at a news conference Thursday morning into the case of a missing Denver-area girl with ties to Missouri.

Westminster Police spokesman Trevor Materasso said they were unable to provide any details on the body found at a park in Arvada, Colo., on Wednesday evening, only saying crime scene investigators would remain on scene Thursday.

Investigators found the body Wednesday afternoon as they searched for Jessica Ridgeway, the Westminster girl last seen Friday as she left her home to walk to school.

"We are unable to make a connection to the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway," Materasso said Wednesday night.

WESTMINSTER —  Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso told a 6:45 a.m. news conference Thursday there is no new information about a body found last night as investigators searched for Jessica Ridgeway, the 10-year-old Westminster girl missing since Oct. 5.

"At this point, we don't have additional information we can provide," he said.

Police said investigators worked through the night in efforts to positively identify the body.

Materasso did say that canvassing in Westminster neighborhoods near where Jessica disappeared will continue today, as well as searches in additional open space areas.

Vehicle Possibly Linked To Missing Girl Found In New Hampshire

The car, abandoned by a Portsmouth Walmart according to the Boston CBS affiliate, matched a description provided in a tip out of Dexter, Maine, which is 170 miles away from Portsmouth. According to the Dexter Police Department, a woman claimed she saw a girl that looked like Jessica at about 4 p.m. Sunday. The woman said the girl was in a light blue Buick with a roof rack. The car had Colorado plates, but the woman was unable to get the number.

Police in Portsmouth confirmed to 11 News Thursday that their department and police in Westminster are both investigating this discovery. We are expecting more information from the Portsmouth Police Department shortly.

Arvada PD Put Out "Stranger Danger" Warning Just Last Month

KKTV 11 News has learned Arvada Police sent out a warning just last month about two attempted child abductions.

Two girls reported on two seperate occasions, a man had offered them candy if they'd get into his car.

Meanwhile, investigators are refusing to suggest any connection between a body found in Arvada Wednesday night, and a missing girl from Westminster. The body was found just five miles from the school Jessica Ridgeway was walking to.

There will be a heavy police presence at the site of the discovery during the day Thursday, and West 82nd Avenue remains closed indefinitely by Pattridge Park open space, Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso said.

The location is in the Arvada city limits and is about seven miles from Ridgeway’s home in Westminster.

The body was apparently found right off the road near to a drainpipe. On Thursday morning Copter4 video showed a blue tarp covering the pipe.

The search for Ridgeway continues around her home on Thursday, Materasso said.

Colorado police looking for a 10-year-old girl who disappeared on her walk to school have found a body in a park, but are not saying whether it is linked to the case and noted Thursday that officers are still searching for her.

The discovery of the body is the latest turn in the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway that has seen police look for clues in a reported sighting in a car with Colorado plates in Maine and a Wyoming abduction. The FBI said Thursday that abduction was unrelated.

At this writing, we haven't received an update about the search for Jessica Ridgeway, a Westminster ten year old who's been missing since Friday, or the identity of a body found in Arvada yesterday. Moments ago, however, the local FBI office, which is assisting in the Ridgeway investigation, sent out an alert on another abduction of a young girl -- an eleven year old from Cody, Wyoming, who was kidnapped and sexually assaulted before being released on Monday. Is there a connection? Here are the details.

At 4:33 p.m. on Monday, according to a Cody Police Department news release, officers received a report from another eleven year old that she and friends had been approached by a man 45 minutes earlier at the city's Park County Complex, at 1501 Stampede Avenue. The man had claimed he needed help finding a missing black Labrador puppy and asked the girls if they could help him. At that point, one of the girls agreed and climbed into the passenger side of the vehicle -- a white SUV with two seats up front and a mattress in the back that suggested he had been living out of it. The SUV drove away with the girl and hadn't returned.

Police increase patrols around Broomfield schools in light of Jessica Ridgeway disappearance

Broomfield police will step up extra patrols near all of Broomfield's elementary and middle schools until a suspect in Jessica Ridgeway's disappearance is identified.

Between 20 and 25 officers began extra patrols around schools Thursday morning, and they will continue the patrols as a precaution until investigators can identify any suspects in the disappearance of the 10-year-old Westminster girl.

Arvada police have released a composite sketch of a man who attempted to lure children into his car with candy.

There were two separate incidents reported, one Sunday and another Wednesday, police said.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5-feet-9, thin, with sandy or brown hair and in his late teens to late 30s. The second victim described the suspect as not having facial hair, but the first victim described him as having a thin beard and mustache, police said.

The suspect may have changed his appearance between incidents, police said.

Police Still Trying To ID Body Found In Arvada

In another possible development in Jessica's disappearance, police in Portsmouth, New Hampshire have confirmed that a car possibly linked to the missing child case was found Thursday morning.

The car, abandoned by a Portsmouth Walmart according to the Boston CBS affiliate, matched a description provided in a tip out of Dexter, Maine, which is 170 miles away from Portsmouth. According to the Dexter Police Department, a woman claimed she saw a girl that looked like Jessica at about 4 p.m. Sunday. The woman said the girl was in a light blue Buick with a roof rack. The car had Colorado plates, but the woman was unable to get the number.

Police in Portsmouth confirmed to 11 News Thursday that their department and police in Westminster are both investigating this discovery.

Jessica Ridgeway search leads to body found near two attempted abduction cases

The field where the body was located is the location where two attempted child abductions took place in Sept., according to 9 News.

The first attempted kidnapping took place less than a mile from where the body was found. It involved a man approaching an 8 year old boy in his driveway. The boy was able to escape the situation, reports the local news media outlet.

Just three days later, a man attempted to abduct a 9 year old boy in the parking lot of Fitzmorris Elementary school by offering the child candy. The boy ran away to safety, reports 9 News.

Authorities describe the man in both incidents as a white male with brown hair between the ages of 20 and 40.

9 News reports that a year ago, police announced a man in Arvada was targeting children. At that time authorities released a sketch of the man believed to be a suspect in the attempted abductions.

Arvada PD Put Out "Stranger Danger" Warning Just Last Month

KKTV 11 News has learned Arvada police sent out a warning just last month about two attempted child abductions.

Two girls reported on two separate occasions, a man had offered them candy if they'd get into his car

I believe the murderer of little Jessica is still in the area. In order to dismember a body tools would have been used & he would have needed someplace to do that. 
The second thing is sex predators first thing they do is plan. case out and watch the kids near the school and see who walks alone.

I hope the public gets really involved and lets catch this monster.

I vote that every pedophile be dismembered, that it somehow be disguised then permanently reattached to their foreheads and that it be the absolute law for any pedophile released back into society.  That might just stop these bleeding heart judges who believe in rehabilitation or those who sympathize because they have the same predilections or proclivities.  There is no cure, there is no rehabilitation and, IMO, with every one (which actually seems to be most of them) who gets a slap on the wrist many more are emboldened.  Or course, there is a much more expedient form of eradication, unfortunately it is still illegal.  Sorry, rant over.

Police: Car found in city not linked to Colorado missing girl case

Woodland Park police say a 14-year-old girl is safe after a man tried to kidnap her Thursday afternoon.

Police say the alleged kidnapping attempt happened along West Kelleys Road about 2:10 p.m. Thursday.

Police say the suspect, a young male, was driving an SUV, described as a black Toyota 4Runner with tinted windows and Colorado license plates that were either dirty or covered.

The man stopped near the girl, opened the door, and motioned for her to get into the vehicle. The child grabbed her cellphone, which caused the suspect to drive away.

Body Found Was ‘Not Intact,’ Ridgeway Investigation Continues

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) – Police are planning a major news conference on Friday after the discovery of a body in Arvada on Wednesday night, as the search for clues into the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway continues.

CBS4 reports that investigators have been treating the discovery as if it is the body of Ridgeway, but in two very brief news conference on the matter Thursday Westminster police spokesman Trevor Materasso wouldn’t elaborate.

He said police are still hoping people will use the tip line set up in the Ridgeway case.

The School should have another technique to inform parents, when a child does not show-up for Class. This really stinks, when the school sends out a casual e-mail, or a phone call, and does not feel an obligation to follow-up, and find out what happened, and why the child is not in class. IMO

The POS knows this will torture Jessica's parents for days.  If LE has to rely on dna there are other remains to be found somewhere.

My school requires two tel nos--parent and a back-up number of family/relative/friend for emergency.  However, families do not always update this information.  It's very frustrating for the school.

The FBI released the following information that could help identify the suspected kidnapper of Jessica Ridgeway:

Often, someone in the community will unknowingly be associated with the offender of the crime, and may be in a position to observe behavioral changes in that person. They will recognize the changes, and may even question the person about it, but may not relate the changes to that person’s involvement in the crime.

– Immediately following the incident, he may miss work.  The absence will be sudden and unplanned.  He may either be a “no show” or he may offer a plausible excuse such as illness, death in the family, car trouble, etc.

– He may miss scheduled appointments/commitments and be unaccounted for during this period.  These appointments/commitments may include such things as medical appointments, meetings with a probation officer, prior commitment to a friend or family member, drug test, etc.

– He may suddenly leave town, either with no explanation or with some plausible reason.

– This individual may express an intense interest in the status of this investigation and pay close attention to the media.  However, some offenders may quickly turn off media accounts or try to redirect conversations concerning the victims or their families.

– There may be changes in the usual consumption of alcohol and/or drugs.

– He may make a change in his appearance or alter something to prevent identification, such as changing the look of his vehicle, clean or discard his vehicle.

WESTMINSTER —  FBI agents are asking the public to watch for unusual behaviors of people that could ultimately fit the profile of a suspect in the disappearance of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

In a news conference on Thursday afternoon, FBI Spokesman Dave Joly said FBI resources from throughout the country are assisting Westminster Police, including a special dog search group, members of the Child Abduction Rapid Deployment team, and a Behavioral Analysis Unit.

On Thursday morning, Westminster police said the body found in an open space park about 6 miles from her home was "not intact" so it was difficult to identify the body.

Several sources have told 7NEWS that several parts of the body were still missing.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said because of the condition of the remains, a positive identification will not be determined before mid- to late-afternoon Friday.

Search For Evidence Continues In Jessica Ridgeway Investigation

On Standley Lake in Westminster located at 100th Avenue and Simms Street, north of where the body was discovered, investigators searched the shoreline in the water for evidence.
 
The agents were from Jefferson and Douglas Counties. A Douglas County Mobile Crime Lab was also set up in the area. Investigators filled bags with evidence and stacked them in a nearby SUV. They have not confirmed what they were looking for or what, if anything, was discovered.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4)- Police and other agencies investigating the disappearance of Jessica Ridgeway are not ruling out a possible connection to an attempted abduction suspect.

Police in Arvada have been investigating two cases of attempted abduction since Sept. 9. Now police in Westminster are taking a closer look at the case to see if there is a connection to Jessica’s disappearance.

On that day a child was approached by a stranger near Quaker Acres Park in Arvada. The stranger allegedly offered candy and asked the child to come to his car.

Three days later another child was approached by a similar stranger offering candy at Fitzmorris Elementary School.

WESTMINSTER - As the search for evidence in the Jessica Ridgeway investigation continues, the search for a suspect is intensifying.

The FBI has 50 agents working the Ridgeway investigation and they are asking the public to help them catch whoever is responsible.

Officers spent most of the day at the Pattridge open space and reopened the Leyden Road to traffic Thursday evening.

The person chose an isolated area, crossed under the barbed wire fence at a drainage culvert, and left the body on a hillside. It's still not confirmed if the body is Jessica's.

VELEZ-MITCHELL (voice-over): Tonight, cops make a shocking and gruesome discovery in the desperate search for missing 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway. Could a body found in a field just miles from where the young student vanished be little Jessica? Cops remain tight-lipped as they continue their hunt for a possible predator. And is there a connection to the ominous sightings of suspicious vehicles in the area? We`re investigating. And I`m taking your calls.

JEREMIAH BRYANT, JESSICA`S FATHER: By far the worst thing I`ve ever been through. Still is. I just want to find my daughter.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I can`t imagine what she must be going through. I just thank the lord that I have my children and I pray that she will get hers returned.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If you have any information, doesn`t matter how insignificant you may think it is, call.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I hope we find her safe.

SARAH RIDGEWAY, JESSICA`S MOTHER: I watch her walk out the door. And I shut the door. And that`s the last time I saw her.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Tonight, breaking news and a gruesome new mystery in the disappearance of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

Police discovered a body while searching for Jessica. But 24 hours later they have still not released a positive I.D.

Good evening. Jane Velez-Mitchell coming to you live.

The body was found in the middle of a field in Arvada, Colorado, yesterday about six miles away from Jessica`s home where she vanished walking to school. And today, police announced why it`s taking them so long to release the victim`s identity. Listen.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We appreciate the media recognizing that from the helicopter you have footage of the body which would show the public that it`s not intact. This is extending the length of time it`s taking for the investigation to positively identify who that body is.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Not intact. I shudder to think what that means. Of course, the question on everybody`s mind, and I say this with great regret, could it be Jessica Ridgeway?

The fifth grader vanished on Friday walking to school. I cannot imagine what Jessica`s parents are going through right now. The not knowing. Here`s Jessica`s mom talking about how she felt when she found out her precious daughter was missing.

S. RIDGEWAY: You don`t hear anything. And then you get the pit in your stomach that you don`t want any -- any parent -- any parent to -- to ever experience in their whole entire life when you`ve been told your child`s been taken.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Since this unidentified body was found in Arvada, Colorado, we should mention that`s the very same city where two little girls told police a man in a white van followed them to school just the day before Jessica vanished. And that same van was reportedly seen in Jessica`s neighborhood the very day Jessica disappeared.

Cops still looking for tips, because no matter what we find out about that body in the field, one thing is for sure tonight. There is a child abductor, a predator on the loose. We need to catch him.

Straight out to Don Champion, reporter KMGH. Don, what do you know about this body in the field? How far exactly is it from where Jessica vanished? What`s the latest?

DON CHAMPION, REPORTER, WMGH: Jane, I can tell you that the body was found about six miles away from where Jessica lives. We do know investigators are still in the process of trying to identify it.

We also saw investigators out there at the scene for much of the day today. It`s pretty much a very isolated area where a lot of old coal mines are located. There are some homes in that area, but it`s very off the beaten path, if you will.

The police did continue their searches in that area today and also in open spaces around where Jessica`s house is. It`s clear right now that investigators are still needing help from the public in this case. As I speak the FBI is here holding a press conference right now going over things that people can look up -- look for in a possible suspect in this case.

So it`s very clear that investigators are still needing some tips coming in to them. So far, at last check, more than 600 tips have been phoned in to investigators.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Now, Don, let`s talk about where the backpack was found. I believe we have a map that we`ve put together. We`ve got little Jessica going to school. And six miles away in a neighboring town, you see this unidentified body found. And then there was the backpack that was found just a couple of days after Jessica disappeared. Give us a sense of what does that tell us where -- where they were found?

CHAMPION: Well, quite frankly, I`ve spoken to some people who say it suggests that this man or the perpetrator, whoever did this, knows this area very well.
You talk about that neighborhood in Superior, which is about six miles away from Jessica`s house. That neighborhood is once again kind of isolated. And the location of where that backpack was found, you sort of have to know your way around that neighborhood. It`s not like it`s directly off of a highway, if you will.

And then you think about where the body -- where this body was found yesterday. Once again, not directly off of a highway in any way. So a very isolated area. So some people are suggesting that this possibly could mean that this person who did this knows this area very well.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, somebody who understands what this family is going through is one of my heroes, Diena Thompson. Her precious, beautiful 7-year-old daughter Somer vanished while walking home from school in 2009. She was with her siblings and simply ran ahead. Her body was found two days later in a landfill. And this neighborhood man, Jerrod Harrell, pleaded guilty to her murder. He was a guy who lived in the neighborhood and lured Somer into his house with a puppy.

Diena, again, you`re my hero. You`ve turned this hell into a foundation for your daughter -- in your daughter`s name to help other girls and stop these kinds of nightmares and horrific abductions. What are your thoughts as you listen to our reporter say, hey, the way this is coming together it appears that maybe this sicko is in the area, somebody from the area?

DIENA THOMPSON, MOTHER OF SOMER THOMPSON (via phone): I mean, obviously it wouldn`t surprise me at all, considering our monster lived half a mile away from us. And lived there for several weeks after he murdered Somer. They usually are around the place. I think they watch. And if she had the same routine, then he would know that.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, then, Stacey Honowitz, Florida prosecutor, supervisor, sex crime unit, they need to find out anybody in this area who has a white van. Not to say that for sure the white van`s involved, but my gosh, that`s certainly a good lead. And isn`t there a way to find out every single person who has a white van in that region?

STACEY HONOWITZ, FLORIDA PROSECUTOR: Well, certainly everybody`s registered. Their vehicle has to be registered unless they decide not to. But they can check that. And you`re right, I mean, if there`s been sightings of a white van -- and obviously there were, because there were calls into the police department -- this is a major lead for them to go off of.

And right now we really don`t know what the investigation entails. But you can bet that that is part of it. And that`s probably a huge factor in it.
VELEZ-MITCHELL: All right. Let`s go to the phone lines. Lori, British Columbia, your question or thought -- Lori.

CALLER: Hi, Jane. Nice to talk to you. This is just an absolute sad state of affairs. And I think the whole thing is what parents are going to have to do with your children, whether they`re 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, if somebody grabs you, you tell your child you`ve got to yell, you`ve got to kick, you`ve got to scream and you better yell. Because chances are that scum bag is going to drop you. And I think wasn`t it a few months ago that it happened in Wal-Mart that somebody grabbed a kid and the kid yelled and he dropped him.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes.

CALLER: And also, too, you know, if you put this child in a van or whatever and this guy takes them to a secondary place, it`s game over.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. Absolutely. You`ve made some good points, Lori. And I want to say this, Robi Ludwig, psychotherapist. Vans are the vehicle of choice for abductors. We know that. The reason being once somebody gets in a van, there`s generally no windows. And they can be contained in that van, as opposed to a regular vehicle. That`s what`s so scary.

ROBI LUDWIG, PSYCHOTHERAPIST: Yes.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: You know, what really horrifies me about this is that there were warning signs. If in fact this white van is connected, kids said, hey. Two girls told cops a man in a white van followed them the day before Jessica went missing. I mean, we`ve got to -- we`ve got to have a rapid response when kids say this from now on.

LUDWIG: You know, I think sometimes when you tell the police something like that, they say we need more information. We need more details. And they sometimes don`t follow up until something horrendous happens. And that`s unfortunate. And I`m not exactly sure why that is.

But I`ve seen other situations where the police have been contacted, and they say "We can`t do anything. We need more details, more information. We don`t have any other reports yet."

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, it`s complicated. Quickly, Don Champion, I know that the parents got a letter three weeks before Jessica disappeared about a sicko in a dark blue sedan trying to lure kids with candy. But did they also get the warning about this white van?

CHAMPION: We know that that incident the day before Jessica disappeared that the principal of the school where those kids went actually left a voicemail message for several parents. But there was another incident, that one that you`re talking about three weeks before, we do know the school district here did send home a letter...

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. Don, I got to jump in. You`re saying that, in the incident three weeks before, where a guy in a dark sedan said, hey, come here kids with candy, that letter went out. But the day before, you`re saying that the principal talked to the kids in that school. But Jessica didn`t go to that school. Yes or no, Don?

CHAMPION: The kids involved in the incident before Jessica`s disappearance, no, they did not go to Jessica`s school. They went to another one, which was about eight miles away or so.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: So in other words Jessica`s mom would not have known that this white van was trolling the neighborhood. That`s my point. This is a problem. There`s got to be a region-wide alert. Telling just the kids who go to that one school isn`t good enough.

S. RIDGEWAY: She`s going to meet her friend because it is snowing. And, you know, she -- her friend says, yes, I`m walking too. And I watch her walk out the door. And I shut the door. And that`s the last time I saw her. I want her to come walking back through that door. I need her to walk back through that door.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: That poor mother wondering where is her precious daughter, 10-year-old Jessica.


Now, searching for Jessica, they have found a body that they are not identifying. And that body was found about six miles away from where Jessica vanished. Her backpack was found about 15 miles in the opposite direction. And, again, they cannot -- they are not identifying this body because the body is not intact. And I shudder to think what that means.

I`ve got to bring in Tom Shamshak, former police chief and private investigator. All of this sort of within a 15-mile radius, let`s say. It would appear since she disappeared Friday morning, they found the backpack late Saturday night around midnight. And now this discovery last night that this sicko whoever he is may have been in the area the whole time. And that just kills me.

TOM SHAMSHAK, PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR: Jane, good evening. Yes, until there`s some scientific certainty, we won`t know definitively if this remains belongs to this case. But certainly the tragedy here is that everybody in the community was not fully aware of the presence of this what appears to be a predator out there trolling in the area.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, let me ask you this specifically. How do they identify this body if it`s not intact? Meaning obviously they can`t do a visual identification. And I don`t want to get into more detail. I think our viewers can do the math on that. What do they have to do, get DNA?

SHAMSHAK: Well, that`s one form. But I would say that the easiest remedy here is to get a hold of her dental records and then compare those records to the decedent`s skeletal remains.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: But that -- I don`t know that that -- does that really make any sense? I mean, she disappeared last Friday. It`s been less than a week. When they say the body is not in tact -- well, Robi Ludwig.

LUDWIG: It`s not clear. I mean, in some cases there are pedophiles that are severely disturbed, and they dismember the body after they, you know, rape these children. So we don`t know what they`re talking about. We don`t know if the body`s in a decompensated state, which probably not, right? If this happened recently, that`s probably not the case.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes.

LUDWIG: So we just don`t know what they mean when they use that terminology. We need more information.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. This search for Jessica, well, there`s no words to describe the toll that this is taking on her family. Her dad inconsolable a couple of days ago when he spoke out for the very first time. Listen to this.

BRYANT: This is by far the worst thing I`ve ever been through. Still is. I have nowhere to start, you know? I mean, I don`t -- I don`t know what to do. You know. I just want to find my daughter.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: By the way, law enforcement has cleared both the father and the mother, who are separated, from any involvement in their daughter`s disappearance.

I want to go out to another one of my heroes, Erin Runnion, who`s joining me tonight from California. Your 5-year-old daughter, your precious Samantha, was abducted right from your front lawn by a man who asked her and her friend had they seen his little dog.

And now we`re hearing that three weeks prior to Jessica`s disappearance a man was trying to lure kids into a dark van -- sorry, dark sedan offering candy and that the day before she disappeared a man in a white van was trolling around and following little girls. Erin.

ERIN RUNNION, MOTHER OF SAMANTHA: Yes.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I know there are no words, but just help us -- help us understand this horror.

RUNNION: Oh, my heart just goes out to this family. This has been the longest six days of their lives. And this is the worst part. The worst part is the not knowing. The imagining your baby screaming in terror and pain. That is the worst part.

So I pray that they will have definitive resolution very soon. I suspect that they`re already coming to terms with that very likely news. But all you can really do at this point is focus on honoring -- honoring Jessica.

And I said it ten years ago, how many children is it going to take before this nation puts child protection first? And I`m afraid it`s just going to keep happening until people take seriously the needs to empower children to be safe in this world and to get safety education into schools across this country and to educate parents on recognizing what predatory behavior looks like and how these crimes can be reduced.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Erin, you said it very well. More on the other side.

JESSICA RIDGEWAY, MISSING GIRL: Do you want to be on camera? That`s where the camera is. See? Look. That`s the camera.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: That`s the angel all of America`s looking for. And this unidentified body found six miles from where she disappeared. We`re waiting for news on who that -- who that is.

And we`ve still got this other story. Just about seven miles -- seven-hour drive from where Jessica vanished, there was the rape and abduction of an 11-year-old girl in Cody, Wyoming, right across the state line from Colorado. Again, that`s about seven or eight hours north of where Jessica disappeared.

Here`s what cops have to say about that in connection about this case.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`re not at a point to say they are or are not connected. Obviously the team here is in direct communication with those working that incident in Cody. We`re sharing information to try to identify any similarities in those things. But we`re not making a connection at this time.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Jennifer Morgan, reporter TTN Denver, what do we know about the Cody incident and its possible connection to Jessica`s disappearance?

JENNIFER MORGAN, REPORTER, TTN DENVER (via phone): Well, coming out today the man who actually picked up the little girl walking down the road after she was abducted is coming out and speaking about what had happened when he found her.

And, again, there`s no connection at the moment. They`re focusing more on somebody who may be in town here in Arvada/Westminister/Denver area. But they are -- the man did say that the little girl was sexually abused. And when she got to call her mom in the car, she said, "He broke my heart."

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. And we`ve got a description of that man. Again, this is a man 55 to 60, white SUV. And he told a group of girls he was looking for a lost puppy. And that`s when the 11-year-old got into his truck.

The girl was reported missing a few hours later and then she was found walking alone down a street. She was sexually assaulted. Obviously, we`re not mentioning her identity. But thank God that she got away or was let go. In this case it`s very, very different.

Dr. Robi Ludwig, psychotherapist, we don`t want to think about the unimaginable. But the fact obviously that they found a body within six miles of where this child disappeared.

LUDWIG: Yes.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Less than a week after she disappeared, raises the specter. And then, of course, the possibility of violence given the fact they say that this corpse is not intact. What is your understanding of pedophiles and violence?

LUDWIG: Well, pedophiles understand that people consider them disturbed. But they blame the child very often. They say the child is seducing them. And so when they actually engage in the sexual activity, they see the child as vile. And that`s sometimes what contributes to the violence and elimination. They want to eliminate the evidence that they were engaged in such disgusting behavior.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And such sick, evil people that exist in the world.

LUDWIG: Yes.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And as Erin Runnion put it...

LUDWIG: And there`s no cure.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. But the cure is that nationally we wake up and create...

LUDWIG: Right.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: If I lose a FedEx package, I can find it in a minute. But a child goes missing and you can`t find that child for six days? That`s unconscionable. We have the technology to prevent this from ever happening again.

Parents may want to be especially on guard on Halloween this year. The authorities had said they contacted schools in the area after the above referenced incident. Just curious, did the schools then turn around and tell all the parents the same info that there might be a predator in the area so that parents could take special precautions?

The news that Jessica's body was found not intact just made me even more ill than hearing the initial sad news. There is no punishment except for a public stoning that may be in order for the vicious creep that perpetrated this crime.

Body May Be Missing Colorado 10-Year-Old

NANCY GRACE, HOST: Breaking news tonight, live, Westminster, Colorado. 8:30 AM, this little girl, 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway walks three blocks en route to school. Mommy watches as she walks away from home. Jessica never seen again.

FBI, search dogs descend onto Jessica`s home and back yard, taking away bags of evidence. Another piece of the puzzle, a mystery man tries to lure children into his car with candy nearby. But that incident never publicized.

Bombshell tonight. In the last hours, a terrible find in the search for the missing girl. After Colorado authorities comb the region non-stop, an awful discovery made late last night, a body found. The remains are not intact. Body parts are missing.

While police are not formally identifying the victim or the body, our sources say it is a small body. And it has been hacked to pieces.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: There`s a big development I want to let you know about in the case of a missing 10-year-old Colorado girl, Jessica Ridgeway.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: A grim discovery just a few miles from where 10-year- old Jessica Ridgeway went missing.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A body was discovered.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: About eight miles away from where she lived.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Very disturbing details.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Statewide alert for a light blue station wagon with Colorado plates.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I just want to find my daughter.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Police holding up on that identification process right now because the body was not intact.

GRACE: Good evening. I`m Nancy Grace. I want to thank you for being with us.

Bombshell tonight, live to Westminster, Colorado. 8:30 AM, a little girl walks three blocks en route to school, mommy watching as she leaves, never seen again.

In the last hours, a terrible find in the search for missing Jessica, an awful discovery made last night. A body has been found. The body, the victim have not been identified by police formally, but our sources say it is a small body. And the body has been hacked into multiple pieces. We also know that pieces of the body, body parts, are missing from the scene.

We are live and taking your calls. Joining me there on the scene to take your calls, Nia Bender from TNN Denver. Nia, thank you for being with us. Describe the scene.

NIA BENDER, OPERATIONS MANAGER, TNN DENVER (via telephone): Well, right now, there is just a lot of police activity, a lot of police tape. I`m right near where they found the body, and a lot of work going on. And in about the last hour or so, we also got notification that about two miles north of here, near an area called Stanley Lake, they`re also searching for some other evidence. We can see the helicopters from here.
GRACE: Could you tell me about the discovery of the body, Nia Bender? With me is Nia Bender, there live on the scene. You are seeing aerial shots right now. And you can see from the adult men standing around the body that what they are covering up is small.

You are seeing video from KUSA, taking what was left of the body away. This is an open field. It`s really just a few miles away from Jessica and her mom`s home. You are seeing video that we are bringing to you.

Back to you, Nia Bender. I want to talk about how the body was found. And sources saying the body is small, hacked into pieces, no formal identification made as of tonight at this hour, meaning wondering were the fingertips of the body taken away, as well as, conceivably, the head so a formal ID cannot be made. That would preclude identification by fingerprints or dental records, forcing police to rely on DNA.

Which begs the question, where are the remaining body parts? Nia Bender, the discovery of the body -- what happened?

BENDER: Apparently, searchers found the body last evening. And it`s off, as you can see -- you know, this is very wide open. It`s an old coal mining area. It was found near a drain in a kind of a culvert. And they found it last night.

Of course, emergency equipment was out all night long. They lit up the area. Searchers were out last night. And all they would -- all Westminster would tell us is that the body was in very poor condition.

GRACE: Right now, the search is still going on. Many legal eagles and crime sleuths were wondering why the search was going on after a body has been found. They are combing literally between the grass blades, looking for evidence.

At this hour, that tiny body has still not been identified as 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway. But you have to wonder in a town a little over 100,000 population, who else could it be?

We are taking your calls live. Back to you, Nia Bender. Cops are refusing to identify this as being 10-year-old Jessica. Why?

BENDER: You know, they haven`t confirmed why. They said they needed to continue with their investigation. They`ve been very tight-lipped about every inch of this so far. And as I mentioned, just a little while ago, we found out that they`re now searching about four miles north of here for more evidence that they may have found.

GRACE: What is four miles north of there? What is there? Is there a trash dump? What is it?

BENDER: No, a very large lake called Stanley Lake.
GRACE: Oh, dear. I`m going to go right now to Arvada, Colorado. Joining me is Jeff Stauffer. He lives right beside the area where the remains were found. Mr. Stauffer, thank you for being with us.

JEFF STAUFFER, LIVES NEXT TO SITE (via telephone): You`re welcome.

GRACE: Sir, how close is your house to where this body has been found?

STAUFFER: I`d say actually -- well, maybe a quarter mile away, if that far. I live up on a hill, so I kind of look down on the area back up to the open space of the park there. So I kind of watched everything.

GRACE: Mr. Stauffer, what did you observe? That`s what I was going to ask you. What did you observe?

STAUFFER: I did -- well, just yesterday afternoon, I actually thought there was a traffic accident there, you know, not knowing what was going on. And then it just stayed there for hours and hours, and through the night, obviously.

And so just watched, but I had no idea what had happened until I actually heard it on the news, which I guess was about 7:30 that they actually made it to the news. And then actually, my wife told me. So I watched the news at 10:00 o`clock, and then just they showed all the shots there, which is pretty much (INAUDIBLE) see from my kitchen window. So then this morning...

GRACE: Mr. Stauffer, you said they stayed through the night? What do you mean by that?

STAUFFER: Well, I`m assuming there was police through the night because there was a bunch of lights lit up there. They had a big fire truck that had the boom, had lights on that, that was shining on the area where that culvert was that they`ve been showing on the news, where they found the body or the remains.

And it was pretty lit up most of the night that I remember. You know, obviously, I went to sleep. But they were still there in the morning, and then there was other news crews that were down around that area this morning when I got up.

So I watched the news again. And I was just kind of watching -- they had to be at least 50 officers, I believe, that were kind of walking the area, and of course, you know, helicopters and everything else there, all kinds of truck and FBI personnel that I could, you know, see from vests and stuff from my kitchen, so...

GRACE: What else can you see now?

STAUFFER: I am actually not home right now, so I can`t see anything right now. I`m not home right now. I`m on my cell phone, so...

GRACE: Let me ask you this, Mr. Stauffer. We have been told that this is an extremely safe area, that this park is used for recreation, for walking and so forth. Would you agree with that?

STAUFFER: Yes. It`s a very open area. Like, people will ride their horses there. (INAUDIBLE) friends that, you know, will run their dogs in that area. So yes, it`s always -- it always seems like it`s been a pretty safe area, yes.

GRACE: With me is Jeff Stauffer, taking your calls, as well. He lives next to where the body was found. At this hour, police still not identifying the body.

GRACE: I`m good.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That`s good. Thanks for taking my call. And we love you here in Canada.

GRACE: What is your question, dear?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What led cops to the location of this body?

GRACE: Nia Bender, what did lead them there?

You know what? I`m not hearing Nia, joining me from TNN Denver. Let me go to Alexis Weed. Alexis, what led police there?

ALEXIS WEED, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER: Nancy, police haven`t said yet what exactly led them there. But this location is about seven miles away from Jessica`s home and it`s about six miles from where her backpack was located.

GRACE: Everyone, you are seeing video of the scene where a body has been identified. Right now, police are not releasing that ID to us. We do know that it is a small body. It`s about eight miles away from the home 10- year-old Jessica shared with her mom.

We also know that the body was found near a big trash bag. Nothing in the trash bag. We also know that the body was hacked up. We also know that body parts are missing.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: A sad discovery just a few miles from where she disappeared.

RIDGEWAY: (INAUDIBLE) ever -- ever think I want ever -- any parent to go through!

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The body was not intact when they discovered it near an abandoned mine.

RIDGEWAY: And I never would have thought that I would have...

GRACE: We are taking your calls. We are live in Colorado, where late last night a body was discovered. Right now, police not releasing the information. But we firmly believe that they have ID`d this body. We know that the body was hacked up in many pieces and that body parts are actually missing.

We are live on the scene. Back to Nia Bender. Nia, you`re there on the scene. Explain to me what is going on at this hour, and what could they be looking for four miles north of this body?

BENDER: They very well could be looking for additional body parts. We don`t know at this point. They haven`t released any information on this. This is just a little north from where we are right now. And I think at this point, they`re still trying to gather as much evidence as possible.

GRACE: Nia, question. Do you know why police have not been able to ID the body?

BENDER: No. You know, they`ve been very tight-lipped, like I mentioned. They won`t release any of the details right now. And I would imagine they don`t want to do anything to release information until they`re certain of who they have.

GRACE: You know, the police are saying the body is not intact. What do we know about that? What does that mean?

BENDER: At this point, it sounds like the body was in poor shape. And what they told us is that it looked like it had been dismembered.

GRACE: Now, the body not being intact could be why they`re not able to make an ID. If fingerprints or teeth are missing, if they`ve been removed from the body, it`s going to make it virtually impossible to make an ID without DNA.

Now, again, Nia, how far is this from Jessica`s home, the one she shared with her mother?

BENDER: Seven miles from here, just seven miles east.

GRACE: And how far from where her backpack and water bottle were found? Let`s see a map, Liz.

BENDER: No problem. That`s about 11 miles, Nancy. It`s 11 miles from here, in the town of Superior.

GRACE: And Nia Bender, I`m hearing that before Jessica goes missing, an unidentified male was trying to lure children into his car with candy. But that incident was not widely publicized. What happened?

BENDER: Well, apparently, the boys had come out of school. There were two of them. And a gentleman approached them in a van and tried to lure them into the truck with the candy. The boys did the smart thing. They took off and immediately tried to run to a fire station. But the fire trucks had just been leaving to go somewhere. They ran to their school and notified authorities then.

GRACE: Those other luring incidents, where were they in relation to where her body`s found?

BENDER: Oh, probably about a mile, mile-and-a-half.

GRACE: With me right now, Pat Brown, criminal profiler and author of "How to Save Your Daughter`s Life." Pat Brown, this is clearly a secondary crime scene -- clearly a secondary crime scene. Weigh in.

PAT BROWN, CRIMINAL PROFILER: Absolutely. This is a dumping place. And this is very useful to know. First of all, this shows me this is a local person, not some truck driver coming on through.

Secondly, a dumping ground is a place you know well because it was one thing to have an opportunity to grab a girl off the street or to do something to a child, but it`s another thing to have to go someplace and put their body there. You want to know it`s a safe place where nobody`s going to see you doing it.

So dumping grounds are very, very important. That person knew that location. Who around that area does know that location well?

GRACE: And what do you say about claims that the other incident just days before Jessica goes missing, you know, within 10 miles radius, where a man tried to lure children into his vehicle with candy?

BROWN: Yes, but he`s trying to lure boys, and I think that`s a big difference. Generally speaking, pedophiles tend to like girls or like boys. I`m not real impressed by that. I think there`s just possibly another creepy guy around.

GRACE: Now, another question regarding this. Out to Woodrow Tripp, former police commander. I`ll just let you weigh in, Woody. What do you make about the logistics here, how close everything is together?

WOODROW TRIPP, FMR. POLICE COMMANDER: Nancy, that`s very significant. And I totally agree with Pat. And certainly, she`s the expert on profiling. But you also have a person here that needed to dismember the body in order to get it into a bag, certainly for easier transport.

That also indicates that that`s someone who was really concerned about being seen taking this body out, being with this child. Certainly, the bag would offer that.

GRACE: To Marc Klaas, president founder of Klaas Kids Foundation. What do you make of it, Marc?

MARC KLAAS, KLAAS KIDS FOUNDATION (via telephone): Well, first of all, Nancy, my heart breaks for her family because they`re in the same limbo that everybody else is, but it`s so much more personal for them.

I am of the mind that, number one, the person who disposed of this did not necessarily know that area so well or the child -- or the body wouldn`t have been found as quickly as it was. Generally, you try to hide these things in places where they won`t be located.

But I suspect it probably is somebody on her route. I suspect it`s probably somebody either who lives there or who passes by there about the same time every day and knows that that little girl is walking, knows she`s alone and knows that she`s vulnerable.

So as I said yesterday on the show, Nancy, I think that this is a very preventable type of a crime. It`s just...

GRACE: We are taking your calls. I want to go out to Heather Walsh-Haney, forensic anthropologist, Florida Gulf Coast University.

Heather, I want to hear your take on the discovery of the body, the fact that it has been hacked up into pieces and there are body parts missing. What can we tell from the body? Why so long in the identification process?

HEATHER WALSH-HANEY, FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGIST: Well, Nancy, minus the skull, the head, and minus the teeth, that slows down the ability to do a dental ID right away. This little girl had a gap between her two front teeth. Dentists could have done an identification looking at her grin (ph) line. That would have been done quickly and efficiently.

On top of that, we could have done fingerprints if her hands were there. That type of data to construct a positive ID is very speedy right now with law enforcement. The problem is the DNA analysis. That is time-intensive, and it takes sometimes days and weeks to get those results back.

NANCY GRACE, HLN HOST: Back out to Nia Bender.

Everyone, late last night a terrible discovery in the search for 10-year- old Jessica Ridgeway. A body has been found about eight miles from her home. Police refusing to identify the body publicly.

Nia Bender, joining me from TNN Denver. Nia, it`s my understanding that a trash bag was found very near the body?


BENDER: Yes. Reportedly they found a dark colored trash bag near the body. The contents of that trash bag, though, at this point, Nancy, unknown to any of us.

GRACE: Unleash the lawyers. Eleanor Odom, death penalty qualified prosecutor, Alex Sanchez, New York, Peter Odom, defense attorney, Atlanta.

You know, Eleanor, we can learn a lot from that trash bag. Number one, I guarantee you, if you look at that field, you don`t see any trash in it.

Let`s see the same place, Liz.

You don`t see trash out in the field. Take a look at that. So this bag is going to be connected to the disposal of that body. Now think about it, Elle, why is there a bag? Was the bag used to transport the body? Was it left inadvertently?

You know, you don`t want to be hanging around in an open field when you`re disposing of a body. How many times do you think this guy has wondered, did I leave the trash bag there? Because we all know that you can get from a trash bag, it`s a very good surface to get, for instance, latent fingerprints. You can also get friction ridge impressions from that.

If the bag had been used to transport the body to that location, you know, it`s going to be even more full -- it`s going to be more full of valuable evidence. There`s a remote possibility if this body was in fact hacked up, the perpetrator`s DNA could be there as well if a knife was used.

And, Eleanor, think back to the -- for instance, the Wayne Williams case in your jurisdiction in Atlanta. The first case to ever use fiber as a link between the scene of the crime and the disposal area of the crime, where carpet fibers were found on the body from the perpetrator`s car and home. That could be in this bag.

This bag is very valuable, is it not? And I`m not even mentioning the fact that you can like a car get the make and model. When you use, for instance, a light box that is used when you examine a bag forensically, it is a light, you put the bag up and you can see striations, you can see relative changes in color. There`s ways to tell where this bag came from, Elle.

ELEANOR ODOM, FELONY PROSECUTOR, DEATH PENALTY QUALIFIED: Yes. You may -- you just brought out all the potential evidence that could be in that bag. And once they have a suspect, let`s say that suspect has a box of bags in their home, they could match it to that bag even from the tears of the bag. So that bag is going to be very important, Nancy, in this case to collect evidence both inside and outside the bag.

And remember, Nancy, there are only one person who knows about the bag. And that`s the killer of this child.

GRACE: And, Elle, when you say the tears in the bag, you`re talking about the roll of plastic trash bags when you --

E. ODOM: Exactly.
GRACE: -- tear it off, it can be matched back. And it can also be matched to a particular type of roll as to how it actually tears off. And, I mean, this is not rocket science, Elle. I mean, don`t you use a particular type of trash bag for whatever reason? It`s stronger, it`s springier, it`s got zip ties on it. You can tell what kind of bag it is. You can identify a store brand bag. This could very well get the killer on a video buying a bag for all I know, Eleanor.

E. ODOM: Oh, exactly, Nancy. That`s why this bag is so important. Because, again, only the killer knows where the bag was and what it was used for. And that`s why the cops aren`t saying a whole lot about this bag. Because they don`t want to, you know, leak any potential damaging evidence at this point.

GRACE: Out to the lines. Anita, West Virginia, hi, Anita. What`s your question, dear?

ANITA, CALLER FROM WEST VIRGINIA: Hi, Nancy. I love your show.

GRACE: Thank you.

ANITA: And your twins.

GRACE: Thank you.

ANITA: How far was the body found from the little girl`s home?

GRACE: It was about eight miles, Anita in West Virginia.

And, Peter Odom, Anita`s question is actually very significant. That`s why I was trying to get down in my own mind.

Let`s see the map again, please, Liz.

How far it was, this significant point.

PETER ODOM, DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Right. Well, that`s a very important fact. Very important fact, Nancy.

GRACE: Go ahead.

P. ODOM: It`s a very important fact that the -- that the caller brings up. This killer spent time with this body. Now you and Eleanor just discussed the fact that the longer the time that this killer spent with the body, the more likely there is to be DNA evidence from the killer on the body.

It might seem self-evident, but the fact that the body was found so far away from where she was last seen tells you that this killer spent, you know, some time in a car with the victim. And that tells you that there`s going to be a primary or perhaps even a tertiary crime scene that if the police can get it that, too, will be a rich source of evidence.

GRACE: OK. Explain. When you say tertiary, you`re talking about in the vehicle.

P. ODOM: A third crime scene.

GRACE: That`s one crime scene where there may have been a potential sexual assault on the girl.

P. ODOM: Exactly.

GRACE: The scene of the killing which is either the car or inside an apartment or home, and then the scene of the disposal of the body. That`s tertiary crime scene.

P. ODOM: Precisely. And the distance that was traveled tells you that there has to be a car involved.

GRACE: Yes. You`re right. And another issue, Alex Sanchez, Peter Odom is exactly correct. And that makes me wonder, have police gone along these routes and grabbed every bit of security surveillance, road surveillance, if there is any?

I mean, at every red light I see there`s a camera looking down at me.

Weigh in, Alex?

ALEX SANCHEZ, DEFENSE ATTORNEY: Yes.

GRACE: And Alex, interesting. You`ve handled a lot of murder cases. Why do you believe cops are refusing to ID the body yet?

SANCHEZ: You know, first of all, Nancy. This case is beyond criminal. I mean this is almost demonic in nature. And I think the police are being very careful about releasing any type of information until they`re absolutely certain. But I think the killer has left a ton of evidence. To commit a crime like this, there must be a bloody car, there must be a bloody basement, a bloody shed, a bloody house.

I don`t see how this killer can keep this under wraps for too long without somebody knowing or finding out about it. I think he`s from the community. I think he knew that girl. I think he lured her into that car. And I think he`s going to be found out soon. And all that evidence is going to be used to tie him to that crime.

BRYANT: The worst thing I`ve ever been through. I just want to find my daughter.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: From the helicopter you have footage of the body which would show the public that it`s not intact. This is extending the length of time it`s taking for the investigation to positively identify who that body is.

GRACE: We are waiting for a positive identification of a small body found as you see in an open area.

Let`s go to Nia Bender so we can see behind her. That body hacked. Let`s take her at full, please. That body hacked to pieces. There are body parts missing.

Nia, describe what`s behind you, please, for us?

BENDER: Absolutely. Obviously a lot of open space, trees, there`s a lot of outbuildings on this property, old shacks, things like this. This is an old coal mining area. Very -- the landscape is very hilly. So it`s one of those things where, you know, not that many people are going to see you if you`re out here.
GRACE: You know, Nia, when we were looking at the aerial shots of them removing the tiny body, it looks like a grassy park. But behind you I see construction equipment and piles of dirt. Where are you in relation to where the body has been found?

BENDER: Right near the body just a little ways away and a good portion of this terrain through here looks like this.

GRACE: Out to clinical psychologist, Ramani Durvasula. You know, Ramani, what does it mean to you that the killer disposed of the body in this manner?

RAMANI DURVASULA, PH.D., CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST: I mean he was done with it. I mean this is a very predatory person. And I`m guessing this is somebody who may have done something like this before and will do it again. So I think that this is a very dangerous person. And it really speaks to their dismissiveness and lack of conscience.

GRACE: Out to Heather Walsh-Haney. I want to talk about the type of dismemberment, the tool that may have been used and how that could help the investigation.

WALSH-HANEY: Nancy, those tools are going to leave a lot of evidence on those remains. First of all, the pathologist or the anthropologist that may be analyzing those remains are going to look at those cut marks. Right away looking at the cut marks on the neck vertebrae, on the arms, wrists, hips, feet, they`ll be able to tell whether a saw or a knife was used.

They`ll be able to figure out if it was a saw, if it was electric or gas powered. And then those sharp instruments leave fine lines on bone that can be matched to that that the perpetrator used. Thereby we could link the cut marks to the weapon, to the instrument that caused the dismemberment and then to the perpetrator.

GRACE: To Matt Zarrell, also on the story. Matt, what can you tell me about the local schools do -- locking the children in?
MATT ZARRELL, NANCY GRACE STAFFER, COVERING STORY: Yes, Nancy, the schools have been on lockout since yesterday. They actually are letting the children still attend school, but the parents that come and pick up their children need to show identification. They`re not letting the kids play outside at recess. They`re also searching around the school.

And one thing I wanted to point out since we`re talking about looking for more evidence, the cops are still canvassing the area including the area where Jessica disappeared as well as open space areas in and around Westminster, Colorado.

GRACE: You know what`s interesting, Alexis Weed, is that she took the same route every morning when she went to go meet her little friends, these -- I think it was either two or three other little girls she would meet.

WEED: Right.

GRACE: Just three blocks away. They would meet in a little park and all walk to school together every morning. And it was within those just three blocks that she went missing. It wasn`t an eight-mile stretch or a five- mile stretch to where the backpack was found. It was within three blocks. And I think that is very, very probative, Alexis Weed.

What more do we know, Alexis?

WEED: It is, Nancy. Just that three-block area, such a short distance. And usually she would meet up with friends. The friends, though, according to cops never ever saw Jessica that day. She didn`t even make it to her friends. She would typically then meet up with the friends and go about another mile to the school, Nancy. They would cross a field together. But the area where she was, where Jessica was, it was residential. And her mother even watched her walk out the door, the mom said at 8:30 when it would have been light out, Nancy. She watched her daughter walk out the door and start to walk down that block.

GRACE: Back to the neighbor, Jeff Stauffer. He lives right next door to where the body was found. Mr. Stauffer, joining us in Colorado again. Thank you for being with us.

Mr. Stauffer, are there red lights in the area that have traffic surveillance?

JEFF STAUFFER, LIVES NEXT TO AREA WHERE BODY WAS FOUND: Right in our area, no, I don`t believe there are. There`s not many traffic lights in our area. So I know there`s more coming around there. But hasn`t come up yet.

GRACE: I wonder -- let me go to Nia Bender on this. Joining me from TNN Denver.

BENDER: Sure.

GRACE: How about closer to where she lived with her mother. And isn`t it true, Nia, that there`s an office park within -- between her home and where she was to meet the little girls?

BENDER: Yes, that is correct. There is an office park and a couple of other businesses there, yes.

GRACE: Well, do we know what kind of businesses there are? And do we know if there`s surveillance cameras there? Because she would have had to walk past those surveillance cameras to get to Chelsea Park.

BENDER: I`m unsure of whether there were surveillance cameras. But I`ll bet you as good a job as Westminster has done, they`re going to know.

GRACE: We are taking your calls, out to Janet in Florida. Hi, Janet. What`s your question?

JANET, CALLER FROM FLORIDA: Hi, Nancy. I was just watching your show last night. I was wondering why you think the parents are innocent?

GRACE: You know what? A lot of times, with me, Janet, is subjective. I go through all of the evidence. I know that the mother was at work the night before. I know she works the graveyard shift. I know for a fact -- these are facts that I know -- that she always watches the girl leave. That they make the lunch together and she leaves.

That morning they peeled an orange together. I know she always meets those three little girls at that spot and I know the girl was alive the day before as of 4:00 p.m.

When I watch the mom`s demeanor, there`s just something about her, her wording. I believed her. And that combined with the facts that I know and I know the dad was out of state and vouched for, there`s no way that I believe the mother had anything to do with it.

And now that I know that the body was hacked up and there are body parts missing, she would never have done that to her daughter.

To Pat Brown, do you think the perpetrator is watching right now?

BROWN: Well, I think the perpetrator, if -- this abductor of this crime, absolutely is paying attention to what`s going on. Be sure that the police aren`t descending upon him. But I do want to talk about the body dismemberment. I haven`t really heard that the body was hacked. So at this point I don`t know that we don`t know that animals didn`t dismember the body. But if the body was hacked, though --

GRACE: It was absolutely hacked.

BROWN: Was it hacked?

GRACE: It was hacked.

BROWN: Well, if it was hacked --



GRACE: Matt Zarrell, what do we know?

ZARRELL: On the ground that told our local reporters that they could clearly see that the body was small and also looked like it had been hacked into pieces. And we also know the police confirmed at the press conference that the body was not intact and that`s complicating their identification process.

WALSH-HANEY: Absolutely. Humans tend to take off the head leaving the jaw and cranium intact. They tend not to impact or injure the chest or the pelvis. Animals will take fingers and toes. Very different.

GRACE: Very, very different.

Eleanor Odom, Alex Sanchez, Peter Odom, joining me out of Atlanta.

Alex Sanchez, a lot of focus has been on the mom. No way. It`s just -- I can just tell you I don`t need to see a polygraph. I know this mom is not involved, I just know it.
SANCHEZ: I`m with you on this one, Nancy. I looked at the mother`s demeanor, too. I looked at all her statements. I looked at all her background, all her activities that day. And there`s absolutely nothing there. There`s no indicia to indicate that she was involved in this at all. She looks like a perfectly nice, loving mother.

To believe that she had anything to do with this at this point I think is just completely outrageous. They need to focus on the criminal here.

GRACE: I agree. Peter Odom, in order to get to the real perpetrator, you got to get off the mom.

GRACE: Eleanor, forensically speaking, we`re going to have at least three crime scenes. What do cops need to do right now?

E. ODOM: Well, Nancy, they need to examine one -- of course, each one very, very carefully. Collect everything even if it doesn`t seem important at the time. Take a lot of pictures. Take a lot of video. And also talk to anybody who lives near or has been around there.

GRACE: Woody, the kicker is -- Woodrow Tripp, former police commander -- is we don`t know where the other two crime scenes are yet. You`ve got the tertiary, you`ve got the disposal. But the kidnap is clearly in a vehicle. Got to get that vehicle. You could do that from surveillance video or from eyewitness. What else do we need right now, Woody?

Now she may have wound up in a vehicle after she died, but there`s a good possibility and there needs to be a heavy canvas in those residences that go from her mother`s house to where that park is at. She disappeared in between it.

She never made it to the park, Nancy. Think about that. She apparently was abducted between those two points. We have an area.

Checking in to see if there was any news. Something has got to change with punishment for the perverts. They just get a slap on the wrist and let loose to do the same to another child. I personally, would like to see them get a public hanging, and not 20 yrs down the rd of appeals. If you are found guilty of a horrendous crime like this, no delay, take them out in front of the courthouse and put them to death and be done with it. They are way better taken care of than the children and elderly in this country. Now days there are no consequences that fit the crime. They know they will get 3 meals a day, a place to sleep, medical care and dental care. It is just a revolving door. ::MonkeyMad::

Find a way to "lure" him.  Play his own game.  There has to be some kind of bait that will bring him out to strike again. 

Cops do this with online predators.  I am sure there is a way to set him up.

And then turn the tables.

I'm here in Colorado right now.  My son says the area that Jessica lives is nice (Westminster and Arvada).  It's all over the news here as you might imagine.  It's terrifying to think a monster is on the loose and they are probably someone in the community.

WATERVILLE, Maine — A transient who was on probation for a sex offense in Colorado was apprehended by Waterville police on Thursday morning.
 
Deon Gregory Routt, 22, was arrested on a charge of being a fugitive from justice after police learned by an anonymous tip that he was in town, Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said.
 
Rumsey said Routt had an outstanding warrant out of Colorado for failing to register as a sex offender.

Rumsey said Routt’s arrest is unrelated to the case of a missing 10-year old girl from Colorado. A woman had spotted a vehicle with Colorado plates in Dexter earlier this week.
 
He was booked into the Kennebec County Jail on the fugitive from justice charge. Rumsey said the district attorney’s office is already working with Colorado officials on the extradition process.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. - Investigators hope cell phone records could lead to a break in the search for the person who abducted Jessica Ridgeway.

ABC News reports that they're checking records of cell phone towers near Jessica's home, the location in Superior where her backpack was found and the park in Arvada where a body was found. If a phone registered at all three towers, it could lead to a suspect

ARVADA, Colo. - Authorities may release the identity Friday of a body that was found in an Arvada open space park.

The remains were found Wednesday in Arvada's Pattridge Park Open Space.

Sources have told 7NEWS parts of the body are missing, which is why it has taken so long to find an identity

This is the worst of all killers.  This is an organized crime.  The perp sought complete control of the victim as indicated by the mutilation of the corpse.  I personally do not believe the dismemberment was done in order to transport the victim as she weighed less than 100 lbs, I believe he desired to dismember the corpse.

The attacker has been thought to be local, a male, has done this before though maybe not to this extent.  In my opinion he is intentionally leaving evidence laying around to be found so for him this is a game he's playing with LE.  He is the most sick and depraved walking among us and he knows this about himself.  In my opinion he is driven by his lust to kill and dismember and he will act again.  He must be caught and LE knows this. 

I offer gratitude and acknowledge the efforts local LE has put into this case from the start.

I agree that there should be some type of threshold wherein our justice system acknowledges this type of crime is so deviant, so evil, that the murderer should face immediate trial, sentencing, and death.  Our tax dollars should not support lengthy stays, delays, and more delays.
