 HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - Pennsylvania State police have issued an Amber Child Abduction Alert for a 10-month-old girl abducted during a homicide in Montgomery County.

Saavni Venna has black hair, brown eyes, and was wearing a white dress with pink flowers when she was last seen at the Marquis Apartments in King of Prussia between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday, police said.

Investigators search for missing Montco baby

Local, state and federal authorities are looking for suspects and a motive in the death of 61-year-old woman visiting from India and the abduction of her 10-month-old granddaughter in a joint investigation, Saanvi Venna, according to a press release issued by the Montgomery County District Attorney's office.

Upper Merion police responded to a unit on the sixth floor of a building in the Marquis apartment complex at 1:16 p.m. Monday, authorities said.

They found Satyavathi Venna's body inside the apartment. No details of her death were given. She was the paternal grandmother of Saanvi Venna, the child who is missing. Saanvi's father is Venkata Konda Siva Venna and her mother is Chenchu Latha Punuru. The parents emigrated from India in February 2007.

Satyavathi Venna had arrived in the Unitdd States in July for a visit and was set to return home in January. The family was living together in the apartment.

Satyavathi Venna, who was visiting from India, had been staying with her son, Venkata Konda Siva Venna (Saanvi's father) and her daughter-in-law, Chenchu Latha Punuru, Saanvi's mother.  The elder Venna was scheduled to return to India in January. Her body was being autopsied on Tuesday, authorities said.

The family had been living in the apartment since June of this year after emigrating from India in 2007. They had previously lived in San Antonio, Texas, Troy, Michigan, and Cleveland, Ohio.

No suspects have been identified in connection with the murder or the abduction, and authorities appealed to the public for help identifying anyone who might have had "ill will" or any other motive to harm the family.

UPPER MERION TWP., Pa. - October 23, 2012 (WPVI) -- The father of a missing infant pleaded for her safe return Monday night in Montgomery County.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert for 10-month-old Saanvi Venna after her grandmother was found murdered Monday afternoon.

Upper Merion Township Police Chief Tom Nolan identified the grandmother as 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna. She had been watching her granddaughter at the time of the murder.

It is still not clear if the killing was random, or if police have a suspect in either the kidnapping or the murder.

Late Monday night, the girl's father appeared before news cameras.

"If someone finds my baby, could you please bring my baby back?" said Shiva Venna. "Don't do any harm to the baby. Please, please help me in this matter."

NORRISTOWN — The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office released new details on the incidents surrounding a child abduction and homicide in Upper Merion Monday.

According to the district attorney, police responded around 1:16 p.m. to apartment C-603 in the Marquis Apartments complex at 251 West DeKalb Pike for a report of a homicide and child abduction and inside found the body of Satyavathi Venna, 61, of India. An Amber Alert was issued for Saavni Venna, 10 months, who was being looked after by Satayvathi Venna, her paternal grandmother, according to the D.A. Venna was taken between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday, officials said.

Officials said the apartment belonged to the missing child’s parents, Venkata Konda Siva Venna and Chenchu Latha Punuru, who emigrated from India in February 2007. The couple lived for a while in San Antonio, Texas; Troy, Mich.; and Cleveland, Ohio, before moving to Upper Merion in June 2012, officials said. Vasu Velaj, who lived in an adjoining building, said the family was at his neighbor’s residence  earlier in the week and said that the family had only lived in the apartments for a few months and were in the process of looking for a new place to live due to security concerns over the complex.

“The security’s not too good and everybody knows that,” said Velaj. “Even though many residents have asked them to increase security, that’s not effective.”

The abduction of Saanvi Venna does not seem like the typical missing persons case we see. The grandmother murdered, the child taken, no sign of robbery? Almost like the targeting of a family and a child for the baby.

Folks may want to be on the look out for individuals who suddenly have new found so-called adopted babies.

"It's been 48 hours," Prasad Sanikommu said softly, leaving the audience to fill in the rest. Two full days since 10-month-old Saanvi Venna was last seen, since she was taken from the King of Prussia apartment where her grandmother had been killed.

He was addressing supporters, media crews, and members of the Indian diaspora around the world. More than 200 people attended the candlelight vigil Wednesday evening at Heuser Park in King of Prussia, surrounding Sanikommu and other relatives as they prayed and pleaded for the girl's safe return, bathed in fluorescent camera lights that were a harsh contrast to the warm glow of the candles.

"We hope that Saanvi is returned so we can all celebrate her birthday . . . together," said Sanikommu, a cousin of the baby's father. He said the father, Venkata Konda Siva Venna, was too distraught to attend.

Before disbanding, they joined their voices in a Telugu prayer, which translates to: "Take me from darkness to light, from ignorance to bliss, and give me peace."

The vigil came at the end of a day that saw a continued police effort to solve the kidnapping and murder as well as the announcement of a $30,000 reward in the case.

Police believe the child was taken between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Called to the sixth-floor apartment in the C building at shortly after 1 p.m., police found the body of Satayvathi Venna. An autopsy was completed Tuesday, but the results have not yet been made public.

Authorities have not released information about how Venna was killed.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said investigators were being guarded with information because "we do not want to do anything that would jeopardize the child's safety."

Authorities have interviewed all the close family members, including cousins, Sanikommu said.

"It's not like they suspect the family," Sanikommu said. "They said they want to have as much information as possible."

UPPER MERION — The Montgomery County coroner concluded that 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna, who was killed Monday at the time of the abduction of her 10-month-old granddaughter, Saanvi Venna, died of cuts to the neck and chest, officially ruling the death a homicide.
 
In addition to the results of the autopsy, it was also announced that a reward of $50,000 is being offered by the Citizen’s Crime Commission of the Delaware Valley, the Upper Merion Police Department, the Montgomery County District Attorney, and the Telugu Association of North America for information leading to the safe return of Saanvi.

UPPER MERION, Pa. - The body of a 10-month-old baby abducted after her grandmother was slain earlier this week has been found, sources tell FOX 29 News.

An official announcement is expected at a news conference slated to begin soon, and the news comes after a four-day search that had involved local and state law enforcement as well as the FBI.

A court hearing for at least one suspect in the case has been scheduled for 1 p.m. at the district magistrate's office in Bridgeport, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reports from the scene.

 A suspect, who also lived in the complex, is in police custody.

Police believe the suspect's initial intention was to kidnap the child and hold her for ransom. Investigators say they found a ransom note in the apartment demanding $50,000.

Abducted baby found dead, family friend held

The body of missing 10-month-old Saanvi Venna has been found at the King of Prussia apartment complex where she was snatched as her grandmother tried to save her life, authorities said today.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman said the body was discovered at 4:30 a.m. in a basement apartment.

An arrest has been made of a family friend, who sought a ransom. The accused, Raghunanean Yaneadamuri, who lives in the same Marquis apartments complex, left a chilling ransom note, 10 copies of which were distributed around the room where the grandmother was killed and the baby taken, authorities said.

The note read:

"Shiva your daughter has been kidnapped

If you report it to cops your daughter will be cut into pieces and found dead

If you inform this to anyone you will find your daughter body parts thrown into your apartments.

Prople (sic) are monitoring all your moves all the time

Your emails & phones are being traced"

He entered the apartment in an attempt to kidnap the child, but it was not believed he was intent on killing anyone.

However, the grandmother apparently put up a struggle. She had "offensive" and "defensive" wounds suffered while trying to protect the baby.

Saanvi's body was as found in the sauna of an apartment at the Marquis apartment complex where she was abducted. Her killer lived in the same apartments.

"He was living at the Marquis apartment complex," Ferman said, and, "knew the family through the Indian community."
Ferman said authorities were working with the abductor to meet some of the ransom demands, which were not disclosed.

At one point, Saanvi's mother went to a meeting place, but no one showed.

The baby's body is now undergoing an autopsy, Ferman said.

There has been a tragic ending to the search for Saavni Venna, the 10-month-old baby girl who went missing in King of Prussia. In a press conference this afternoon, the Upper Merion District Attorney's office announced that her body was found at about 4:30 am Friday in a sauna in the basement of one of the apartment buildings on the Marquis Apartment complex. They also announced that they made an arrest in the case for both the murder of her grandmother and of Saavni. Raghunandan Yandamuri was a friend of family and they have known each other since at least the summer when the Vennas moved to the area. He also inserted himself in the search and rescue process including attending the candle light vigil on Wednesday. The motive behind the crimes is said to be an attempt to kidnap the child for ransom asking $50,000. In the process of trying to take young Saavni he killed her Grandmother and eventually Saavni. Exact details on how the little girl died will not be available until after an autopsy.

The chillingly detailed ransom note allegedly left by Yandamuri threatened that Saanvi would be "cut into pieces" and have her body parts "thrown into your apartments" if the family informed anyone of the abduction.

Ferman said that Yandamuri also lived at the Marquis apartments and had known the Venna family "socially" since the summer.

Ferman said authorities believe that Yandamuri did not intially intend to kill the victims and that he had appeared as a support figure for the family in the days since the killing, going so far as to post "missing" flyers for Saanvi Venna.

Yes, botched kidnapping in more than one way.  When he killed the grandmother, didn't the perp know that his chances of getting any ransom was nil to nothing.  What are the parents going to do?  Just let grannie rot until they can take care of the ransom payment?

From what I heard he wasn't very smart. He used the father and mother's nicknames in the ransom notes.  They said he left over 50 in the apartment.
The police knew it had to be someone they knew.
