UPDATE: During the search conducted by family and friends on October 26, papers towels were recovered with a substance believed to be blood on them. These items were recovered in a field between Obispo and Ralston Rd.


UPDATE: A purse belonging to the Machesney Park woman who vanished earlier this week, was found near her abandoned car. A search party is now looking for more clues at a Schoonmaker Park.

Miraynda Castro is helping lead a search party, filled with faces she's never seen. Dozens of people have come to Schoonmaker Park to help find her sister whose been missing for four days.

Thirty-year-old Katrina Smith vanished sometime after October 20, 2012 -- when she was last seen. This case is immediately suspicious with negative elements due to the fact that her vehicle has already been found abandoned in a park. Her purse and cellphone have also been located, but she is nowhere to be found. There is no doubt that her loved ones must be bracing themselves for the worst in this developing case.

Search Crew Finds "Blood Soaked" Paper Towels in Search For Katrina Smith

The items were discovered not too far from where her car was abandoned. They called police when they noticed her blue Chevy Cruze parked off the road in a ditch near the intersection of Ventura Blvd. and Obispo.

 

The Winnebago County Sheriff's department says they're not treating the case as a criminal investigation, but they haven't ruled it out.

 

Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro says "we're not ruling foul play out .We just don't know. What's suspicious number one is that you have a thirty year old lady who's missing who had a vehicle that was left abandoned under suspicious circumstances."

 

Smith was last seen at home by her husband. He says she went out to run errands. Family friend Ann Derry explains "she ran to the store, got back home she had to run out again but she'd be back and her husband never heard from her again."

Smith’s purse was recovered Wednesday, Oct. 24, a short distance from where the vehicle was located. During a search conducted by family and friends on Oct. 26, papers towels were recovered with a substance believed to be blood on them. These items were recovered in a field between Obispo and Ralston Road. Tests will need to be conducted to determine whether the blood belongs to Smith. Her cell phone was recovered in the 700 block of Ralston Thursday, Oct. 25.

Smith worked in the Human Resources Department at Camryn Company in Belvidere, Ill. She is married and her residence is on Tetterhall Lane in Machesney Park. However, she has recently been staying in Roscoe, Ill. She has no children, but does have family in the area.

Detectives have been able to determine Smith was shopping Monday night, Oct. 22, between 7 and 8 p.m. at department stores in the area of North Second Street and Illinois Route 173 in Machesney Park. She then reportedly returned to her residence in Machesney Park, and left around 9 p.m. to run additional errands.

Has pictures of her step daughters and the searchers.

I was on one of these searches on Friday morning. They found the bloody paper towels. , This girl went missing on the street (Ventura Blvd.) where I grew up..She has 3 step daughters, one who is in college. Paige is her name.. real sweet girl.
the weird thing is that Katrina's father was there, her sister and step daughter. then the husband arrived and no one spoke to each other that I saw..it was the weirdest thing.
I don'y think this will end well. I think that she  will be found in the river, which is a very short distance from where her car was found...ssssssoooooo sad..
I have heard that she and her husband are having problems and she wad house sitting on Ventura Blvd. There are not a lot of facts coming out.

I have not heard if husband has been given a poly. I don't want to think that he did this, but we all know that the last person to see a missing person has scrutiny.

River Search for Missing Machesney Park Woman

MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) -- It's been five days since Katrina Smith was last seen. She went out shopping late Monday night and never returned home. Family members and police have been searching for her over the last few days and today they turned their search to the Rock River.

More than a dozen local fire departments were called to the area of Ventura Boulevard near Schoonmaker Park in Machesney Park. Boats with new sonar equipment were sent out looking for Smith.

I did not search today, however we were at the search site when the search was going on. There is a no leash dog area located there that we take Molly to. I asked the volunteers who were at the sign in area if there was any word and they all said no...
In speaking at the dog run, others were talking  about it of course. some live very close to where this is all going on. The family was able to secure a couple of billboards with Katrina's picture on it.
I sincerely hope that this does not turn into a cold case. It seems that we have a fairly good detective group here..
oh, and get this...one of the women out there who mis greeting volunteers for the search, told me that someone had broken into 1 of the volunteers cars and stole 2 purses out of it! braod daylight and from someone who is trying to find a missing person! I swear I do not know what this world is coming to...

Update: Search Continues for Katrina Smith

MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) -- Detectives are working into the weekend to help find a local woman who went missing nearly one week ago.

A group of about 40 volunteers spent the day searching the neighborhood in Machesney Park where Katrina Smith's car was found on Tuesday night. Smith went shopping Monday and hasn't been seen since. Friends, neighbors, even total strangers have been handing out flyers with Smith’s photo. Her brother took charge of the search efforts on Sunday after flying in from Oklahoma on Saturday night

The search continues for Katrina A. Smith, 30, of Machesney Park, Ill., who has been missing since Tuesday, Oct. 23.
 
Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27-28, an extensive search of the Rock River was conducted by the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department and multiple assisting fire departments, including Rockford Fire Department and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The river search was conducted from south of the Latham Road Bridge. Nothing was recovered during the search.

Thursday, Oct. 25, Smith’s wallet was turned over to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. The wallet had been recovered by a citizen in the roadway of a Rockford street and turned in to a business as found property. Once it was determined the wallet was Smith’s, the business called the Rockford Police Department, which contacted the Sheriff’s Department.

At this point, it is unknown if anything is missing from the wallet.

This is such a "different" case because it seems like the family is not sharing much about Katrina.and the police are sharing even less... To the story that she was not living with her husband, they say, she was house sitting at the house on Ventura...Nothing is coming out about the husband,I had asked what was the last thing that she was wearing...no answer....
maybe this is the way that a lot of cases go....
On the other hand, I do understand that they don"t want to look at anyone in particular because what if they are wrong about that person......just very frustrating because we are not getting any clues at all...

Although the search of the river with the help of divers from area fire departments was fruitless, information continues to pour in from the public who have also helped to search for any signs of her, Iasparro said.

“People are calling with thoughts and suspicions, bits and pieces of information that is relevant,” Iasparro said this morning. “When something like this happens, people come together and if there is something good that comes out of bad incidents, it’s that it shows people are concerned for one another.”

I just looked up her husband...Todd C. Smith...he is 45 yrs old ...if it is the same one...she is 30...no idea how long they have been married, what he does for a living etc...will do some digging..

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) -
Disturbing information is uncovered about the husband of a missing Machesney Park woman. Court records show he burned down his family's home two decades ago while they were inside it.
Todd C. Smith is the husband to Katrina Smith.  She was last seen October 22, 2012 when she stopped by her house in Machesney Park. According to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department she had been living in separate residence in Roscoe. Todd Smith reported to police she left around 9 p.m. and that was the last time he saw her.  He reported her missing the next day.
In 1985 Todd Smith, who used to go by the name Todd Raprager was convicted of arson.  Court records show he set fire to the house with his parents and brother in it. The home was destroyed. No one was hurt in the fire.

Todd Smith who was 17 at the time was sentenced to 30 months probation and required to get a voluntary drug evaluation.


Now more than 25 years later the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department cannot say if they have any persons of interest in Katrina Smith's disappearance.

Search Continues for Katrina Smith After One Week

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- It's been exactly one week since a Machesney Park woman vanished.

Today, police have confirmed Katrina Smith's wallet was found in Rockford, nowhere near where her car and purse were found abandoned.

“It's been horrible, I just want her to come home.”

One week after police say 30-year-old Katrina Smith said she was going to run some errands, her husband says he's still waiting for his wife to come home.

"She said I will be back later and that was the last we had heard of her," said Katrina Smith’s husband.

Smith is speaking out for the first time since he reported his wife missing.

Now, 7 days later, search crews continue to scour Schoonmaker Park near where Katrina’s purse and car were found abandoned, her wallet found days later in Rockford.

Smith says he and Katrina didn't live in separate homes, like police reported, but that his wife was house sitting in Roscoe. He says the two have been happily married for seven years and that he is devastated by her disappearance.

"I just want her to call or come home or let us know she's safe,” Smith said.

CW...Machesney Park/Loves Park is a pretty small community. I went to high school with Todd's father who is a couple of years older than me. If Im would have heard the name Raprager early on, instead of Smith, I would have assumed  they were the same family whose son had set their house on fire ...it was huge news back then and in this area...

I wonder if Todd's children even knew about that incident?

Good find!...odd that this was dated October 14, 2011 and not too long after that, Katrina goes missing,,,maybe she found out about this and wanted no part of it and separated from him?
I hope that he had nothing to do with this....

Cookie or Cw...I didn't read the very long article and don't even know if this answer is in it...did the ins co. eventually pay the Raprager's? Since Todd changed his name to Smith (legally I presume) do you think Katrina even knew about his past?  Maybe she found out about the latest booboos and someone told her about his past or she may even know more than we think.  Bless her heart, I don't think she is here anymore and I am sure he knows where he put her.

I heard that he changed his name in 1992. probably because of the problems of having the last name of Raprager...If they had contact with his brother Joshua Raprager or his parents, Herb and Margo, you would think that she would question why his last name is different..
On the other hand, I personally do not know if there is contact between the families..
I wonder if his children knew about all of this before now...double whammy for them...

Yes ma'am and thank you.  If his fam had no contact with him I would certainly understand that because if the explosion had been bigger and successful his parents wouldn't be alive. It would be hard but I don't even know if I would want contact with a child that really tried to cause my death.  Even if mentally ill how do you know if they are acting or really sorry?  Very hard situation but probably harder for the people he tried to kill!

MACHESNEY PARK — No new clues or leads were reported overnight in the continuing search for evidence of what happened to 30-year-old Katrina Smith of Machesney Park, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police said.

Daily search parties of family, friends and volunteers continued to comb the area for any sign of Smith or her belongings today. Donations of food, supplies and labor have been offered to search organizers who are spreading the word of their effort through social media.

Although family members have said she was in Roscoe “house sitting,” Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police investigators believe Smith was separated from her husband. Smith has expressed concern for his wife and has participated in the search for her.

For some unknown reason, the family is really concentrating their search efforts on the park near where her vehicle was found on Obispo. A guy who was on the search told us that he rides his bike that way every day to work and had noticed her car on Tuesday morning because of where it was parked and the way that it was parked. He did not know about her missing until Wednesday and he then called the police yo report that he had seen her car early Tuesday morning. To kind of give a time line. I suppose the search has to be somewhere but everyday it has been at the park. (The family organized search)
I think that the police know a lot more about this case than they are letting on. I think that it will be solved soon and that she will be found. Jmo

MACHESNEY PARK — Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police investigators are executing a search warrant at the Smith residence on Tetterhall Lane in hopes of uncovering evidence about the whereabouts of a 30-year-old Machesney Park woman missing for more than a week.

Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro said police have not obtained an arrest warrant and could not say what detectives are looking for in the home. Police began the search mid-morning of the residence Katrina Smith shared with her husband, Todd Smith, 45.

Police Take To The Air In Search Of Katrina Smith

Rockford Police combed the Rock River today looking for clues into the disappearance of Katrina Smith.  Around noon police were up in their helicopter, AIR ONE, starting their search near the dam in downtown Rockford.  After hours in the air, flying north along the river, police were unable to uncover any new evidence.

Her car, cell phone, and purse were found in Machesney Park last week. Her wallet was also found, but in Rockford. Investigators were looking for clues in Loves Park on Tuesday afternoon.
 
"We are trying to be as thorough as we can and cover as much area as possible," Winnebago County Sheriff's Department Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro said. "We just don't know where she is at and we wish we could narrow down a particular location or a small area where we could direct the searchers to, but we just don't have that. So we are trying to cover as much of the area based on information that we receive on-going as we possibly can, but at this point we have not been able to come up with her."

Missing Woman's Husband Speaks Out

“It's been horrible, I just want her to come home.”

One week after police say 30-year-old Katrina Smith said she was going to run some errands, her husband says he's still waiting for his wife to come home.

"She said I will be back later and that was the last we had heard of her," said Katrina Smith’s husband.

Smith is speaking out for the first time since he reported his wife missing.

Now, 7 days later, search crews continue to scour Schoonmaker Park near where Katrina’s purse and car were found abandoned, her wallet found days later in Rockford.

“It's overwhelming, the outreach, the love and the support of everyone, and I am deeply grateful and I know Katrina would appreciate it as well."

Smith says he and Katrina didn't live in separate homes, like police reported, but that his wife was house sitting in Roscoe. He says the two have been happily married for seven years and that he is devastated by her disappearance.

"I just want her to call or come home or let us know she's safe,” Smith said.

Police Search Missing Woman's Home

Police say they obtained a warrant to search Katrina and Todd smith's home in Machesney Park. That search started this morning as police loaded items into vans and took pictures of the property.

Legally, the police needed to get permission from the homeowner in order to be able to search the home. if they don't get permission ..they have to keep looking for evidence until they can get a warrant. It’s important to remember that it's not clear that they're even looking at the husband, they might be looking for clues in her belongings.

Smith is married and while her residence is on Tetterhall Lane in Machesney Park, she recently has been staying in Roscoe, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. She worked at Camryn Company in Belvidere, Ill., where she was employed in the human resource department.

In TV media reports, Smith’s husband said his wife was house sitting in Roscoe, but that they were happily married.

However, Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro said Smith was separated from her husband and living in another location in Roscoe.

“I can’t make any comments about what the husband is saying,” he said.

Her step-brother Chad Kaltved started looking before that.

"I've been searching since Thursday morning when I flew in from O'Hare [Airport]." -explains Kaltved.

Kaltved serves with the U.S. Army's Special Operations Command. He was training in Oklahoma when he got the news that Katrina was missing. Kaltved's been calling on those military skills.

"It's helpful in a lot ways. I can look at it tactically and look at an area and understand ins and outs, likely avenues of approach and boundaries. On the outside I can kind of hold everything inside and stay strong for the family, be the leader of the family, and be able to drive on and stay motivated everyday."

Kaltved says he doesn't believe Katrina ran away. According to him, she was supposed to be interviewed for a new job the day she was reported missing.

Investigators obtained a search warrant to check Katrina and her husband Todd's Machesney Park home on Tetterhall Lane. Records show Todd Smith was convicted of arson in 1985 when he went by the name Todd Raprager. Kaltved does not believe Todd Smith is behind his sister's disappearance.

her husband was convicted of arson when he was 17. What most people dont remember is that his family was inside the home when he removed the cap to the gas and allowed the house to fill until it exploded. He intended to murder his family in 1985 (which included his 12 year old brother)... he possess the ability to commit murder, he has attempted it in the past... he should be the primary suspect. If you are wondering... I was in the house at the time in blew up. God help Katrina.

MACHESNEY PARK — The public is invited to attend a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Thursday at Schoonmaker Park in support of the family of Katrina Smith.

The 30-year-old Machesney Park woman has been missing since Oct. 22.

“We’re just trying to get as many people out there as possible to show support for us,” said Smith’s brother, Chad Kaltved, 38, a member of the U.S. Army’s special operations who is on leave and is heading up community search efforts.

Wednesday’s search expanded to Atwood and Hononegah forest preserves, several miles from Ventura Boulevard and Obispo Road where Katrina’s vehicle was found unoccupied Oct. 23.

Kaltved said his family is working with Crime Stoppers to offer a cash reward, and he remains in daily contact with the police.

“They just told me to be patient,” he said of Winnebago County Sheriff’s detectives. “They are getting a lot of information from the community, and they’ll have something that they can share with me.”

Supporters use the power of the word as motivation in the search for missing Machesney Park woman Katrina Smith. Thursday night, dozens of people gathered at a prayer vigil in her honor.
 
Stories, prayers, and tears. People shared all of those at Katrina Smith's vigil. She disappeared last Tuesday and hasn't been seen since. Smith's half-brother Chad Kaltved, whose military background helps him focus on the search, spoke at the gathering. Even he couldn't help but let emotions take over.
 
"We're tired, we're frustrated, we're confused, but we're thankful, we're optimistic, we're motivated still." -says Kaltved.

Along with Thursday's vigil, one of Katrina's relatives made an announcement. Another gathering for her will take place next week. We'll have more information on that as it becomes available to us.
 
People took the day off from searching, but according to Kaltved, they'll be back at it on Friday. He says he has 10 or 15 friends from the National Guard coming to assist in the search.

MACHESNEY PARK — Over the past week, family and friends of Katrina Smith scoured woods, ditches and the banks of the Rock River in search of the 30-year-old Machesney Park woman.
 
They handed out more than 1,000 posters with Smith’s face and reached out to every local media outlet.
 
Thursday, they prayed.
 
Several hundred people, some wearing yellow ribbons, gathered at a candlelight vigil at Schoonmaker Park, not far from where Smith’s vehicle and other items belonging to the woman were found.

Search for Katrina Smith Continues

The brother of a missing Machesney Park woman says he will not give up until Katrina Smith is found.

After a nearly two week search, friends and family members are back on the hunt once again. Volunteers are walking in groups through Camp Winnebago. Smith's brother said the search party will start working its way through other parks in the Stateline. You may remember Smith's car and purse were found last month in Machesney Park. Her wallet was picked up in Rockford. Family members said they are trying not to lose hope.

MACHESNEY PARK — Desperate to find any clue about what happened to Katrina Smith, 30, family members have organized a benefit dinner to raise money for the search effort from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Casey’s Pub, 7307 N. Alpine Road.

Smith who lived with her husband Todd Smith, 45, in Machesney Park, was last seen Oct. 22. Her car was found abandoned near Schoonmaker Park in Machesney Park the next day and other personal belongings were found near the vehicle in the days that followed. Smith’s wallet was found in Rockford as dozens of family, friends and volunteers have searched for any sign of her.

Pizza and pasta from Napoli’s will be served at the Casey’s Pub benefit dinner for $10 per person. All of the proceeds will be used for the search effort, said Jason Groth a cousin of Katrina Smith who is organizing the fund raising activities.

So, it's the 2 week anniversary of the last time anyone has seen Katrina Smith. My heart breaks each and every night for her and what she may have endured if someone truly has take her or hurt her. She has done nothing to deserve any of this and it is just not fair. I actually called her every night until I heard they found her phone hoping that she would answer. It still hasn't all really set in. I wish we would have had more time. I wish I would have answered the last phone call you made to me. I wish a lot of things. I trust in God and in many ways already see the bigger plan that God has put in my path. Continue to use me Lord and please help us find Katrina Smith, I love her so much......

The Search For Katrina Smith Continues

ROCKFORD - Hundreds of volunteers have joined together during the past 14 days.  Searching parks and industrial areas, and following up on tips and advice Katrina Smith's family members have received from the community. 

"It may not seem like a lot to go off of, but it's better than nothing," said Katrina Smith's borther Chad Kaltved.

Kaltved brought his family to Rockford from North Carolina.  They've been using maps Chad creates every night to search wooded areas and secluded places around the Stateline with the help of volunteers. 

"It's all we can do, we're not the investigators, we're just looking for Katrina," said Kaltved.

Investigators have also been working tireless on the case.  There are currently 8 detectives focused on finding what happened to Katrina Smith after she was last seen around 9 at night leaving her home in Machesney Park two weeks ago.

"We're following up on any piece of information that we can," said Winnebago County Sheriff's Department Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro.

Iasparro says detectives have been looking into Katrina's past, but haven't found anything that might help the case.

"No significant problems in the past that we're aware of, or that we can find out," said Iasparro.

So far, the only hard evidence discovered came on the first day of the search when they located Katrina's car.

"Her purse, her cell phone, and wallet have been recovered," said Iasparro.

Kaltved says 100 people joined in the search on Saturday and Sunday.  He says they found duct tape, gloves, paper towels, and a shovel in Rock Cut State Park.

They've turned everything over to police, but can't say if their findings are related in any way to Katrina's disappearance.

To My Brothers....

The tragedy of Katrina Smith alone is terrible. How sad her loved ones must be to have lost someone so special. What has now compounded this tragedy, that in an effort to divert attention to his own guilt, that my half brother, Dayne Coursey, who is half brother to Todd Smith (fka Todd Raprager) has accused me of setting my house on fire in March of 1985 while Todd is blaming my father.
I have since moved from Machesney Park and now live in another State, 14 hours away. Although, I would have preferred to simply not be involved in this tragedy, my brothers have forced me into making a statement.

Regarding the egregious accusation that I burned down my house. I was born in January 1973. In March 1985, I was 12 years old. My mother and father and I were all in the house when it exploded. Neither I nor my parents were involved in any manner with the fire that nearly claimed our life. As I escaped through a window from my garden level bedroom, my feet were shredded by the glass that covered the yard. Then, I stood across the street with my parents and my dog and watched my house burn. At which time, Todd came running on the scene from places unknown. My mother was married 3 times. Her first husband is Todd's biological father. He was an absent father and was raised, loved, and adopted by my father. My sister and Dayne came from my mothers second marriage, which apparently ended because of abuse issues. Dayne and my sister spent a lot of time between families while Todd was raised in the Raprager home. He had no connection with his biological father until after the fire.


Todd changed his name some time after the fire because he was trying to hide from his past. He tracked down his biological father (last name of Smith) and had his name legally changed to Smith.


I believe this is the case information on the name change goes to case 1992-MR-0000117.

Katrina Smith Search Continues

MACHESNEY PARK (WIFR) -- The search for missing Machesney Park woman Katrina Smith has been non-stop for the last two weeks and now her family is enlisting the help of local hunters.

Katrina's family says they haven't been able to search Rock Cut State Park as thoroughly as they'd like, mostly because it's such a big area. So when the park is closed for deer and turkey hunting this weekend, they're making sure every hunter gets a flyer with her picture on it.

Today a couple of dozen people searched the southwest corner of the Park they found a woman's Jacket, but there's no way to know if it's Katrina’s until police send it for testing. Over the last week searchers say they've found a shovel, gloves, a roll of duct tape, a female suit jacket, and bloody papertowels. Anything that looks out of place has been reported to police.

At this time, police aren’t saying much. Detectives are really urging people to check their properties and any out buildings for signs of Katrina. They say she was wearing black pants and a red top. The family says police are considering searching the banks of the Rock River with cadaver dogs , but that's not something police will confirm or deny.

Following is the plea issued by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department Nov. 7:
 
Katrina Smith was reported missing on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012.

Since that time, an exhaustive search has been conducted for Ms Smith, both by law enforcement and citizen volunteers.

The search has not been successful.

In addition to the physical search for Ms. Smith, hundreds of leads have been followed up on by detectives of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Police and the Roscoe Police Department.

The search and investigation continues, and another appeal is being made to the public to assist law enforcement in both areas.

Citizens are asked to search their private property and outbuildings for any sign of Ms. Smith. If anything is located, call law enforcement immediately and report it.

Anyone with information on the disappearance of Ms. Smith is asked to call the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department (815-319-6400) or Crime Stoppers (815-963-7867)

At the time of her disappearance, Ms. Smith was reported to have been wearing black pants with a red top. Ms. Smith is 5 feet, 4 inches, 120 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Katrina Smith’s family has organized a benefit dinner for 5:30 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, at Casey’s Pub, 7307 N. Alpine Road, Loves Park, Ill. Funds raised from the benefit will go to fund further search efforts and to raise a reward for information about Katrina Smith’s disappearance. Pizza and pasta from Napoli’s will be served. Cost is $10 per person.

An account has been established at Riverside Community Bank, and donations can be made at any of the bank’s locations to the “Katrina Smith Fund.” A Facebook page, “findkatrinasmith,” has also been established.

A fundraiser was held tonight at Casey's Pub.  The money will be used to pay a reward to anyone who information on Smith's whereabouts.  Many people wore t-shirts with Smith's picture, others wore wrist bands bearing her name.  "It's just a testament to who Katrina was" says Chad Kaltved, Smith's brother.  "The type of person she was a caring giving person and to see this community just goes to show you what type of community it is and it means a lot."

Over 100 people showed up for the fundraiser.  Smith has been missing now for 17 days.

Investigators aren't releasing any new information to us about Katrina Smith's disappearance. No one's seen her for more than two weeks. While we don't know where she is, one thing's for sure, her supporters are there to help in different ways.
 
Whether its searching, praying, or donating; family, friends and strangers come together for Katrina. Thursday night, a huge turnout meant some financial help for the search effort.
 
"I don't want to say the word victory, maybe a step in the right direction." -says Katrina's cousin Jason Groth, who organized the benefit.
 
Supporters packed into Casey's Pub for Katrina Smith's benefit. Her family member Melinda Brazier is amazed to see all of the people there.
 
She says, "It really shows a sense of community."

Before the benefit, a volunteer search took place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Smith's step-brother Chad Kaltved says they were checking out the area near the condo where she was staying, up by IL-251 and East Rockton Road. Kaltved only had a few searchers with him, no leads or clues were found.

About 1:30 p.m., an off-duty firefighter fishing in the river saw the body ensnared in a tree about 65 yards north of an Illinois Department of Transportation boat ramp and about 65 yards into the river.

Winnebago County Sheriff’s detectives were on the scene along with members of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department has been investigating the disappearance of a Machesney Park woman, 30-year-old Katrina Smith, who disappeared Oct. 22.

There was no indication of whether the body is that of the missing Smith.

Rescuers said the body appeared to have been in the water for some time and had started to deteriorate. The body was clothed but because of the length of time that had passed, the clothing had faded to the point of being unidentifiable.

BYRON - Shortly after noon Friday an off duty Byron fire fighter was fishing in the waters just south of the city of Byron, when "he believed that he located a body on the Rock River," said Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn.

Harn says his department along with the Byron Fire Department responded to a stretch of the Rock River near Route 2 and Townline Road, and pulled a body out of the water that had be caught on this  log.

"It appears it's been in the water for a period of time, to what extent I can't tell you," said Harn.

Harn says the body had begun to decompose and was covered in Algae, and he believes it is that of a white female.

"I will confirm that it appears to be a female," said Harn.

Harn says the woman's body was found without pants, and that her clothing had deteriorated so much they couldn't distinguish a color.

"It's a little decomposed, but I think that were going to be able to positively I.D. her," said Harn.

At this point Harn can't say how the body got there or how the woman might have died, nor did he see any trauma marks on her body.

"I didn't notice any," said Harn.  "But I can't say until after the coroner does his job."

My thoughts exactly, Muffy.  That is why I expected it to take longer.  Once they changed the article, as TMom (thanks Sis!) pointed out, I started to think it might be her.  I did not realize clothes could deteriorate so much so quickly.  Then when they said they were going to let us know within an hour, the little nagging feeling it might be her, started to increase.  That would not have been enough time to ID someone else and notify the family.  Anyway, that is what my thought process was--not that you asked.

Prayers for healing for the family.  She was a jewel.

Harn said the body was mostly submerged in the river and caught on a large log several yards from the shoreline about a mile south of Byron.

He said the body was clothed and had begun to decompose.

An off-duty Byron firefighter who was fishing in the area saw the body and called 911 around 12:30 p.m.

Divers from the Byron Fire Department recovered the body.

"They walked out there. The water is only waist-deep," Harn said.

I dont know if people are searching anywhere but around rock cut and the area where her car and purse where found and some surrounding areas but i think we need to widen the search to areas around byron oregan and highway 2 even along the river that runs along highway 2 going into byron and on up towards oregon there are a lot of woods and secluded areas down that way who ever it is that is invloved with this horrific act has had a lot of time to be moving her alive or dead (im praying to god shes alive everynite) ive done my own profiling and investigating i have my own thoughts on what has happened and have probably heard more than most the public but cant reveal anything my prayers and thoughs with katrina's family i hope shes ok and brought home very soon

“My biggest fear was never finding her, so it gave me a little relief here,” says Katrina Smith’s mother Vicki Nalevac.

Family members say they are devastated by the news. Katrina’s loved ones and complete strangers have been searching the Stateline since she went missing. Winnebago County detectives are not releasing Katrina’s cause of death. They think it could hurt the investigation. An off duty fire fighter spotted Katrina in the water just south of Byron on Friday. The case has spanned multiple cities; police say Katrina’s car was found in Machesney Park while her wallet was found in Rockford. Family members say they want answers.

“We are overwhelmed by the support that has been shown to the family,” says Katrina’s brother Chad Kaltved. “From, friends and community members, anyone who has helped out, words can't express how that is uplifted us."

The entire family sat down with 23 News on Sunday, including Katrina’s parents, husband and sister. We're hoping to learn new details on the investigation sometime this week. No one is in custody.

The public is invited to honor Katrina. Her funeral will be held at 11 am Saturday, November 17th, at Heartland Church. There will be a visitation the night before from five to nine. Her family says the community is welcome to attend.

How very sad. At least her family knows where she is now.

ROCKFORD — What do you do with embarrassing pictures of your baby sister?

If you are Katrina Smith and your kid sister is Miraynda Castro, you cut them up, of course. Not to throw away, but to frame and encase them in coasters and offer them to family and friends to rest their drinks on.

“I was like, ‘Are you serious?’” Castro said.

Castro, 22, and Chad Kaltved, 38, said their sister, Katrina, definitely had a sense of humor.

The three-week search for the missing 30-year-old Machesney Park woman came to an end Saturday when an autopsy confirmed the body of a woman found the day before in the Rock River, just south of Byron, was that of Katrina.

Monday, Katrina’s two siblings gathered with others at a family member’s southeast side Rockford home and spoke at length about the woman who, on a daily basis, brought hundreds of people together for one cause.

They said Katrina was a wife and stepmother to three girls ages 21, 18 and 16. She worked with her husband, Todd, in insurance for seven years before working in the human resources department at Camryn Company in Belvidere

Katrina Ashley Smith, 30, of Machesney Park, Illinois left this world to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 22, 2012. Katrina was born July 16, 1982 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. She graduated from Harlem High School in 2000 and attended Rock Valley College. Katrina was employed by Camryn Industries in Belvidere as a Human Resources Coordinator. As a member of Heartland Community Church, she loved working with children through Launch Ministries, volunteering, and helping others. Katrina was a warmhearted person who loved people, especially children. Her beautiful smile could light up any room and brought joy to all around her.

She had many hobbies and interests, including planning family gatherings, taking pictures of family and friends, and gardening (her favorite flowers were yellow carnations). Katrina also was an avid Chicago Bears fan, and enjoyed vacations at beaches and ocean fronts.

Katrina leaves many loving family and friends: husband Todd Smith, mother Vikki Nalevac, father Bruce Edlund, step daughters Paige, Devan, Sydnie, sister Miraynda Castro, brother Chad (Heather) Kaltved, grandmother Deloris Diventi and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Visitations and Memorial Service will be at Heartland Community Church, 1280 S. Alpine Rd., Rockford, IL 61108. Visitations are Friday, November 16, 2012 from 5:00-9:00 pm. and Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 10:00am-11:00am. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 11:00 am. The autopsy results are in for the woman who was found dead in the Rock River last Friday after being reported missing in Machesney Park in late October.

An autopsy was performed on the body of Katrina Smith by the Ogle County Coroner's Office on November 10. Results showed Smith suffered blunt force trauma. The case of her death is now being classified as a homicide.

Katrina Smith’s body was found around 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9, in the Rock River near the intersection of Route 2 and Townline Road, south of Byron, Ill. The Ogle County Coroner’s Office identified the body as Katrina Smith’s via dental records Nov. 10.
 
Rescuers who recovered the body said the body was covered in weeds and algae and had already begun to decompose. Her body was reportedly partially clothed, with the remaining clothes faded from likely being in the river for weeks.
 
Katrina Smith was last seen by her husband, Todd Smith, 45, at about 9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22, at their Machesney Park residence at 8239 Tetterhall Lane.

Detectives have determined Katrina Smith was shopping at department stores in the area of North Second Street and Illinois Route 173 in Machesney Park between 7 and 8 p.m., Monday night, Oct. 22. She then reportedly returned to her residence in Machesney Park, and left around 9 p.m. to run additional errands.

Katrina Smith’s vehicle was found abandoned at Obispo and Ventura in Machesney Park at approximately 7:50 p.m., Oct. 23. Neighbors reported seeing the vehicle parked at that location earlier in the day, unoccupied.

Katrina Smith’s purse was recovered Wednesday, Oct. 24, a short distance from where the vehicle was located.

During a search conducted by family and friends Oct. 26, paper towels were recovered with a substance believed to be blood on them. These items were recovered in a field between Obispo and Ralston Road. Details about whether the blood on the paper towels belonged to Katrina Smith have not been released.
 
Katrina Smith’s cell phone was recovered in the 700 block of Ralston Thursday, Oct. 25.

Also Thursday, Oct. 25, Katrina Smith’s wallet was turned over to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department. The wallet had been recovered by a citizen in the roadway of a Rockford street and turned in to a business as found property. Once it was determined the wallet was Katrina Smith’s, the business called the Rockford Police Department, which contacted the Sheriff’s Department. At this point, it is unknown if anything is missing from the wallet.

Tuesday, Oct. 30, police obtained a search warrant and searched the Smith residence on Tetterhall Lane.

Katrina Smith’s Death Ruled a Homicide

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- There are new details in the case of a Machesney Park woman who was missing for nearly three weeks and whose body was found in the Rock River on Friday.

The autopsy showed that Katrina Smith died from blunt force trauma and police say that means Katrina was murdered. Today her family says they're willing to forgive whomever is responsible, but they're not giving up on justice.

Police aren't releasing any other details like where she was hurt or what might have been used at the murder weapon and they still won't say whether there are any suspects.
Today her brother Chad said even though the family saw it coming, they are relieved police are making progress but they're angry something so terrible happened to his sister.

“I can tell you right now that if you feel like you need to come forward we'd ask that that person does so,” said Chad Kalteved

ROCKFORD — Katrina Smith, 30, suffered “blunt force trauma,” and investigators believe she was a homicide victim.

 Today was the first time authorities publicly classified the case as a homicide, but Sheriff Dick Meyers said, “We’ve treated it as a homicide from day one.”

Smith, a Machesney Park resident who had been missing since Oct. 22, was found Friday by an off-duty Byron firefighter fishing in the Rock River south of Byron.

 An autopsy performed Saturday in Ogle County confirmed Winnebago County investigators’ suspicions that Smith’s disappearance was because of foul play.

“There were several points of blunt-force throughout the body,” Meyers said.
 As for how long Smith had been dead before she was discovered, Meyers said, “Every indication to us is she was in the river since the night she came up missing.”

Meyers said the next step entails awaiting analysis of evidence submitted to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab.

When Katrina wasn’t working, she liked to take pictures and volunteer at Heartland Church and was an active participant in geocaching, a free community game that utilizes a GPS device to go on a treasure hunt.

Castro said her relationship with her sister was like that of many other sisters: shopping trips, going out to eat and simply talking anything and everything.

“She was always my rock and support system,” she said. “I’m going to miss her presence and her ability to make life easier.”

Kaltved, who is a member of the U.S. Army’s special operations and is on leave from training in Oklahoma, is stationed in Fort Bragg, N.C. He said Katrina traveled once a year to the East Coast to visit him, his wife and their five children. And when she wasn’t there, she was always a phone call away.

“She gave me good advice,” he said. “She was a good friend of my wife, too. She always was an ear that I could call to.”

While other family members in the home Monday wrote Katrina’s obituary, Castro and Kaltved thanked the community at large for their search efforts, supplies and prayers.

“We couldn’t have done this without them,” Kaltved said. “We just went out there every day thinking, ‘We’re going to find her.’ There were so many people who took charge. So many veterans came out. I even had a World War II veteran come out. There was just an outpouring of all the local businesses: Target, Panera Bread, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Office Depot, Starbucks, FedEx. It didn’t stop."

Kaltved and Castro declined to talk about why, how or who caused their sister’s death, if indeed it was by foul play.

But until those questions are answered, Kaltved said there is no closure for the family.

“We want justice,” he said. “We’re not going to be happy until we find out who did this. ... We’re confident law enforcement is going to finish this thing.”

Website Claims Katrina Smith's Husband Killed Her

MACHESNEY PARK - It's a provocative website which claims to know who killed Katrina Smith, even though its author claims he's never met her.  The website is called, ConvictToddSmith.com, which is practically self-explanatory.  The author of the website, Justin Raprager, is Todd Smith's estranged half-brother.

The website is full of allegations regarding Smith's past conviction on arson as a teenager and now his involvement in an insurance fraud case worth $45 million.  Raprager says he decided to create the website because Smith and his other half-brother, Dayne Coursey, were going to go to the press to blame him for the fire Smith set some 20 plus years ago.

"The minute that I heard he was trying to blame my father and they were trying to blame me for these fires, pushing the blame all around, I immediately felt very confident that he had something to do with this," said Raprager.

Court documents on the website reveal that Todd Smith, AKA Todd Raprager, set fire to his family's Machesney Park home back in 1985.  The documents say he confessed to having issues with his parents and set the fire to "scare" his mother.  Raprager says he was just 12 years-old when his brother Todd blew up the house, and he was inside while it happened.

"His 12 year-old little brother was in the house and he took a gas cap off and let it fill up," said Raprager. 

"This didn't just happen quickly, so he sat somewhere while the house filled up with gas knowing his family was about to die."

Raprager has no evidence to directly connect Todd Smith to the murder of his wife Katrina.  Police haven't named any suspects in the case yet either.

Hundreds Turn Out to Say Goodbye to Katrina Smith

ROCKFORD - Friends and family of Katrina Smith gathered Friday night to say goodbye to her, along with hundreds from the community who Smith had never met.  Her face became familiar to many when she went from being a missing person to a murder victim.
 
No one at Heartland Church wanted to be there on Friday.  It was the location of Smith's visitation and will be the location for her funeral on Saturday.  Smith went missing nearly three weeks ago on October 23rd and her body was discovered in the Rock River south of Byron.
 
Anybody with a connection to Katrina Smith came out to say goodbye  to her Friday night.  Many claimed their kids played sports together; some said they went to school with her.  Cynthia Abruzzo is a former neighbor of Katrina's family.
 
"Just a very sweet little girl, very neat, very girly," Abruzzo said as she described the little girl who grew up in the house next door.
 
Abruzzo says her daughter and Katrina used to play together when they were young.  She says they hadn't kept in touch with her family for decades, but she felt compelled to pay her respects anyway.
 
"I didn't even realize it was her," said Abruzzo.  "But every time I would see that picture in a lot of places that I went I would say, 'Have they found out anything about that?' because even before I realized it was Katrina it was still a heartbreaking story."
 
Many people in attendance didn't even know Smith, but all who said they've never met her say they wish that they had.
 
"We didn't understand the impact that it had on the community until the vigil," said Tammy English, a spokesperson for the family.
 
"A lady stepped forward and said she was just there.  She didn't know anybody in the family, she didn't know Katrina, and it was at that moment we began to realize that she was one of thousands."

She goes shopping, returns home only to leave for an 'errand' and is killed from a beating.  I'd check the family finances and see if there were money issues.  Beating death tells me it was personal.

I was going to say that I don't think Katrina was living with Todd at the time of her death.  Some say she'd moved out about 10 days before her murder and was living in a friend's condo.  But she did go by to see him after shopping that night.  And I don't believe his story about her leaving to run an errand at 9pm and not returning.  He was the last to see her alive.

Bruscato: Todd Smith Arrested For Katrina Smith's Murder

The Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato made the announcement during a press conference Wednesday.  Todd Smith has been arrested on four counts of first degree murder and one count of concealment of a homicide.  Smith was arrested at around 2:30pm while riding in a vehicle.

He is being held on four million dollars bond.  The news comes after a month long investigation and just days after her funeral.

To the family and friends of Katrina Smith. It is with great sadness and regret to hear my beliefs to be correct. As I have mentioned before, no one wanted it to be Todd, and no one wanted Katrina to die. Please know that the Raprager family sends its deepest condolences.

To the children of Todd Smith. I am so sorry. For years my parents have begged to meet you. How nice it would be, or would have been, to have you as a part of this family. I will never expect you to understand what has happened, but hopefully you will start to see that we Raprager's were not the bad people that you were warned about by your father. You have a Grandma and Grandpa who think about you often, and an Uncle who would be willing to do anything to help you should you ever ask.

Many of you have called into question what I have done with this website. I remind you that it was started to defend my family, to expose a criminal, and hopefully help find Katrina. I'm not sure that I was successful at any of those, and even though Todd has been arrested, I assure all of you that I am not feeling joy. I have exposed many of my families dysfunctions in hopes to aid in justice. None of this was easy.

My mother is beside herself and will spend the next several days crying. All these years apart from her son has not soften the pain this situation has caused her. So, to my parents, let me tell you that as a father of 4, being a parent isn't easy. We do our best and hope for the best. What Todd has done was not a product of your parenting. You have always been good parents, and you continue to be great grandparents. You have a son and daughter and lots of grandchildren that will always defend and love you.

To Dayne, I do not blame you for supporting your brother so blindly. You do have a track record for bad decisions. What I do blame you for is being so quick to throw me under the bus by spreading the malicious lies about myself and my father being involved in that fire (as well as those crazed rants on your FB page). It's just one of the many things I will add to my list of why you are a dirt bag. I hope you begin to reconsider the lies told by Todd and publicly recant your accusations. ROCKFORD — Todd C. Smith, who had reported his wife Katrina Smith missing about a month ago, was charged Wednesday with her murder.

Smith, 45, was arrested peacefully around 2:45 p.m. when Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over a vehicle near a neighborhood off Spring Creek Road, Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro said. Smith was a passenger in the vehicle, which was pulled over to execute the arrest.

He is charged with four counts of first degree murder and one count of concealing a homicide. The state’s attorney’s office issued four counts in pursuit of different charging theories under the criminal code. Two counts allege “brutal and heinous” acts, State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato said Wednesday at a news conference to announce the charges.

If convicted, Smith could face between 20 and 100 years in prison. He is being held in the Winnebago County Jail on $4 million bond, which means $400,000 would need to be posted for his release. He makes his first court appearance on Saturday for a bond hearing.

Bruscato and Iasparro declined to provide details of the investigation or evidence that led to the arrest. They stressed that answering such questions could interfere with the ongoing investigation and prosecution of the case.

Katrina Smith, 30, was last seen Oct. 22. Her husband reported her missing to the Roscoe Police Department the next day. She had been staying at a friend’s condominium in Roscoe before her disappearance, authorities said.

Family, friends and dozens of volunteers aided police in a massive search for Katrina or any evidence of her location. Her body was found Nov. 9 by an off-duty Byron firefighter fishing in the Rock River south of Byron. Authorities said she suffered “blunt force trauma” and investigated her death as a homicide.

"At this point I'm not going to say I 100% back him up, but it's hard because he was a family member, somebody who knew my wife and kids, he was married to my sister, I trusted him, and also because we don't have all the information yet. But, definitely my mind is shifting and thinking other things." -he says.

After hearing all of this, Kaltved says he never saw this coming, but there was one warning sign before her disappearance.
 
"About 30 days before this happened I did get a phone call from her, she was kind of upset and said she had to talk to me. And just being married and going through life you're going to have bad days so I kind of assumed that, and I still do assume that was just a bad day. She did text me back later and said that she wasn't doing too good but don't worry about her. Unfortunately, I never got to talk to her again." -he says.
 
Kaltved's putting up a strong front for his relatives, for some family members it's not that easy.
 
"There's definitely family that are hurting and they don't want to speak and it's going to take time to mourn and grieve and even this is too much to handle right now." -he adds.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department executed a search warrant on Oct. 30 at the home of Todd and Katrina Smith at 8329 Tetterhall Lane, Machesney Park. Neither the sheriff’s department nor the state’s attorney’s office would comment on any evidence found as a result of that search warrant.

Todd Smith faces a possible sentence of 20 to 100 years in prison for the first two counts of homicide if convicted and 20 to 60 years in prison for the third and fourth count of homicide. The count for concealing a homicide carries a possible prison sentence of two to five years.

Smith appeared in court via video from the Winnebago County Jail, where he sat with his ear to a jail phone and listened as Judge John Truitt read the four counts of murder and one count of concealing a homicide the 45-year-old Machesney Park man faces.
 
Smith is charged with beating his wife to death on or around Oct. 22, when the-30-year-old Machesney Park woman first went missing, and concealing the homicide by placing her body in the Rock River. Two of the counts allege “brutal or heinous behavior indicative of wanton cruelty” that could carry a 20 to 100 year prison sentence. Truitt asked if Smith understood the charges he faces.
 
“Yes, sir,” Smith replied.
 
Smith appeared without an attorney and was appointed a public defender after he told Truitt he didn’t think he could afford to hire a private lawyer. He said he worked for Safe Money Strategies, Inc. in Machesney Park before his arrest, but did not have savings to hire a lawyer. The sound of his voice broke slightly as he told Truitt he and his family didn’t know if he’d be able to hire an attorney.
 
He will be back in court at 9 a.m. Dec. 21 for his formal arraignment and chance to enter a plea. He remains in jail on $4 million bond, which requires $400,000 posted for his release.

his eyes are empty...we have seen this before in other murderers..

Not sure how accurate it is and I'm going from memory because I'm not sure I could find it again...but I've read that the condo didn't have a washer/dryer (it was for sale iirc) and Katrina had an interview the next day so that's why she went over there to do the laundry.

Todd Smith Pleads Not Guilty in Wife's Murder

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- New details were shared in court today on how Katrina Smith died. Her husband Todd Smith plead not guilty to eleven counts related to her death.

A tearful plea to bring Katrina Smith home, has now turned into a plea in the courtroom.

45-year-old Todd Smith told a judge today, he's not guilty of killing his wife and hiding her body.

Smith's family packed today's court hearing as Judge John Truitt described how police say Katrina Smith was killed. Investigators believe Todd beat her with a baseball bat, stuffed her into the trunk of a car, and then dumped her remains into the Rock River, before leading the community on a search for her body.

Today, a soft-spoken Todd Smith appeared in a red jump suit and frequently kept his head down.

A very different demeanor from when we interviewed him in October. Smith's attorney and prosecutors have since requested that interview and other related news reports, to review as evidence. If smith is convicted, he could face life in prison, he'll be back in court January 9th.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Todd Smith was back in court today. You may remember he's accused of killing his wife Katrina Smith and dumping her body in the Rock River. Today he told the court he wants some of his personal belongings back, specific things police confiscated during the investigation.

Court records indicate police found printed internet maps in his car and they also collected his i-pass records. Smith's defense attorney is asking the prosecutor to turn over a lot of evidence in the case, including receipts that were found in Katrina’s wallet and copies of the surveillance video taken from the Kohl's store the night of her disappearance.   ::snipping2::

A woman hundreds in the Rockford-area community searched for, for weeks is remembered. Katrina Smith was found dead in November but today would have been her 31st birthday. A balloon release will be held in her honor at Schoonmaker Park in Machesney Park. This is the park where teams of volunteers met day after day for nearly three weeks to search for Katrina Smith. Tonight it will be filled again but this time people are coming out to remember her.

Katrina Smith's body was pulled from the Rock River in Ogle County late last year. But before that she was a missing woman. Katrina was last seen October 22, 2012. Her husband told police she had left her home to run errands. Her car was found just a block from Schoonmaker Park. Hundreds of volunteers combed the area around it looking for clues as to where Katrina could be. After her body was found, her husband, Todd Smith was arrested and charged with her murder.  Tonight her sister Miranda plans to announce a new foundation in Katrina's name

ROCKFORD — Todd C. Smith has asked Judge John Truitt to try his first-degree murder case elsewhere, fearing that he cannot receive a fair trial in Winnebago County.

Today, Smith’s public defender, Margie O’Connor, filed motions for a change of venue and to suppress evidence. A change of venue is typically granted when attorneys have demonstrated that a defendant could not receive a fair trial because of extensive pretrial publicity.

I think that he would get a fair trial, too.  If he thinks that it is all about him, it's not--it's about justice for Katrina!  IIRC, most of the pretrial coverage was about the search for Katrina--not him.  Also, it was difficult finding updates on the case, especially after the arrest.

A Machesney Park man accused of killing Katrina Smith takes the stand to ask for some evidence to be thrown out. Todd Smith is accused of beating Katrina Smith to death and throwing her body in the Rock River last year. While Katrina Smith was a missing person's Todd Smith was questioned and police asked to search his home.  He agreed twice, signing two different consent to search papers with officers but had asked to be there when it happened.

Smith was before a judge today asking for what was found during the search to be suppressed. On the witness stand, Todd Smith described himself as stress out and that he was even confused at times. He says he wanted to help police search for Katrina so he signed the papers but he didn't really read the fine print.

The state argues that he did because in the consent papers they asked Smith to mark different items including allowing his home, a cell phone and computer to be searched. But he specified that he did not want a different computer searched. The state also says he was able to be at home when at least part of the search happened especially when any of the items were actually removed from the home. The defense had asked particularly for a pair of hiking boots taken from the home to not be allowed into evidence. A judge disagreed and said it would all stay.

Judge denies motion to suppress evidence in Katrina Smith murder case

Smith's conditions on the searches weren't written on either of the consent forms he signed. Truitt pointed out the forms clearly state police can seize anything they felt relevant.

Smith also agreed to allow police to search Katrina's blue Chevrolet Cruze which had been found abandoned in Machesney Park the night she was reported missing.

"Even if you accept the defendant's version, he was present when the items were seized," Truitt said, adding that the consent form "really leaves it up to their discretion" to seize relevant evidence or items.

Although prosecutors were allowed to cross examine Smith, their questions were limited to the illegal search and seizure motion and so other aspects of the case were not discussed.

The significance of the boots is not clear in the overall case.

Arguments over whether his eventual trial on charges of killing his wife should be moved to another jurisdiction because of excessive pretrial publicity were delayed.

ROCKFORD - The man accused of murdering Katrina Smith now faces federal charges.

A grand jury indicted Todd Smith on seven counts of mail fraud and 10 counts of wire fraud. 

The U.S. Attorney's Office says he falsely represented to investors their investments in Electus Asset Holdings, netting him nearly $1 million.

Smith was not alone in the scheme.  A California man, 36 year-old Travis Oliver, is also charged with eight counts of mail fraud and 15 counts of wire fraud.

Oliver was the managing member of Electus Asset Holdings.  He and Smith allegedly solicited individuals to invest in their company.  The scheme ran from Feb. 2009 - March 2012.

The indictment says the money was used to pay for personal expenses.

It also alleges that in order to conceal their false promises, smith and Oliver brought in new investors to pay interest and principal owed to prior investors.

Each count of mail fraud and wire fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

ROCKFORD — Winnebago County prosecutors have filed new charges that will raise the stakes at the trial of a Machesney Park man accused of beating his wife to death with a bat and throwing her body into the Rock River.

Todd C. Smith, 46, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in a new, 22-count Winnebago County Grand Jury bill of the indictment. The new indictment replaces a December 2012 version of the charges and doubles the number of criminal counts a jury could eventually consider.

ROCKFORD — Lawyers for a Machesney Park man accused of beating his wife to death with a baseball bat could attempt to raise doubt about his guilt by implicating other potential suspects.

Todd C. Smith, 47, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder in the Oct. 22, 2012, slaying of his wife, Katrina A. Smith, 30.

During a court appearance Monday with Judge John Truitt, Assistant Public Defender Margie O’Connor requested police reports about a juvenile charged with stalking a friend of the Smiths two years before the killing.

O’Connor intends to investigate the juvenile, who peeped in the friend’s bedroom and then stalked the friend who lived nearby. Katrina "believed she was being stalked and that someone was keeping track of her,” O’Connor said, suggesting that that person might have been the juvenile whom Katrina had contact with through a church youth group.

No trial date has been set. Smith returns to court April 22.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A young woman considering divorce who went missing and later found dead in the Rock River. That’s the picture painted Friday in a hearing for Todd Smith, accused of killing his wife Katrina.

Katrina was seeing a co-worker at the time of her death. That man, Guy Gabriel, testified today they became friends in early October, about the same time Todd and Katrina separated.

Gabriel and Jeff Patchin, a friend of Todd’s, both said Katrina went to Todd’s home the night of October 22nd. She wasn't seen or heard from after that.

Patchin also talked about Todd’s demeanor during searches for Katrina. He said Todd didn't seem that upset and any tears he had seemed fake.

Another friend testified he was at Todd’s home after Katrina went missing. He said when Todd couldn't find a baseball bat he said, “My prints are on the bat."

Katrina was brutally murdered and her body was dumped in the Rock River. Her body was found November 9, 2012 just south of Byron.

Friday’s hearing for the judge to decide what evidence and testimony will be allowed during the trial. This hearing will continue on February 1st. A new date for the trial has not been set.

ROCKFORD — Katrina Smith had made an appointment with a lawyer to talk about divorcing her husband, Todd C. Smith, before she was beaten to death with a baseball bat.

As an evidentiary hearing in a Winnebago County courtroom continued today, Vicki Wagner, secretary for attorney Tamika Walker of the Sreenan & Cain law firm, testified that Katrina Smith had scheduled a consultation for Oct. 29, 2012.

But Katrina Smith never met with Walker. Police say she was killed the night of Oct. 22, 2012.

"After the phone call, I remember seeing her name on TV," Wagner said.

Todd Smith has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder in his wife's death.

He is accused of beating her to death and throwing her body into the Rock River. His attorney, Winnebago County Assistant Public Defender Margie O'Connor, is expected to poke holes in the state's case by suggesting someone else killed Katrina.

New details about the case emerged at a rare hearing this week and should be admitted at his eventual trial, according to an argument by Winnebago County Assistant State's Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross. She is arguing before Judge John Truitt that potentially incriminating statements Todd and Katrina Smith made to others should be allowed during the trial. They both talked about their marriage falling apart, Hite Ross said. And Smith said during the investigation that he worried he could be arrested in connection with his wife's death, Hite Ross said.

The hearing is expected to conclude March 7.

Katrina Smith's stepfather, Bruce Edlund, testified that Todd Smith had told him that the marriage was in trouble when Katrina stopped joining them for church for several consecutive Sundays before her death. And in the week before she was killed, Edlund said, Katrina had texted questions inquiring about how to obtain an Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification Card. And she asked whether she could practice at a gun range without one.

ROCKFORD — The trial of a Machesney Park man accused of killing his estranged wife and disposing of her body in the Rock River has been delayed as attorneys continue to discuss what evidence should be admitted in the case.
 
The trial of Todd C. Smith, 48, was scheduled for Feb. 16, but the case was delayed as the state requested a hearing to get certain evidence admitted during trial. An evidence hearing has been scheduled for March 7.

Katrina Smith, 30, was reported missing on Oct. 23, 2012. Todd Smith reported her missing to the Roscoe Police Department on that date. She had been staying in Roscoe at that time, according to friends and family. Her body was discovered on Nov. 9, 2012 in the Rock River near Byron, Ill.

Todd Smith was arrested and charged with his wife’s murder on Nov. 24, 2012 and he has remained housed in the Winnebago County Jail during the process. His bail was set at $4 million in 2012, which was never posted.

ROCKFORD – There is enough evidence for the prosecution to prove Todd Smith, 48, killed his wife more than three years ago because he discovered she was having an affair, a judge ruled Monday.

Smith, who’s been in the Winnebago County Jail since just before Thanksgiving 2012, is accused of beating 30-year-old Katrina Smith to death with a metal baseball bat, dumping her body in the Rock River near Byron, then planting evidence to confuse police.

Judge John Truitt ruled that circumstantial evidence alone is enough for the state to prove its case. Much of the evidence includes hearsay–statements from witnesses who told police that before she disappeared, Katrina was unhappy in her marriage and thought Todd Smith was electronically tracking her whereabouts.

Prosecutors allege Smith planted a tracking device he monitored with a laptop computer on her car days before she vanished. Investigators uncovered the laptop and a plastic case they say housed the tracking device from Smith’s house.

ROCKFORD — Winnebago County Circuit Judge John Truitt on Thursday rejected arguments that Todd C. Smith's first-degree murder trial should be moved to Ogle County.

Truitt also turned back attempts to invalidate search warrants that led authorities to evidence against Smith.

Truitt said the jury trial will proceed in Winnebago County on Nov. 28, four years after 30-year-old Katrina Smith's body was found Nov. 9, 2012, in the Rock River south of Byron. Her disappearance Oct. 22, 2012, sparked a massive search that involved family, friends and community residents.

ROCKFORD — Judge John Truitt will retire in November after a nearly 18-year career on the bench, leaving cases he carefully moved toward trial, sometimes for years, for other judges to see through to the end.

Truitt plans to retire Nov. 4. His abilities and fair approach will be missed when he steps down, Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato said.

"I have found him to be an excellent jurist ... adept at understanding important nuances of the law as well as being very fair and compassionate when issuing decisions," Bruscato said.

The Illinois Supreme Court this week authorized 17th Circuit Court Chief Judge Joseph McGraw to post notice of the coming associate judge vacancy.

Since late 2012 Truitt has presided over intricate pretrial maneuvers in Todd C. Smith's scheduled Nov. 28 first-degree murder trial. Smith has pleaded not guilty to charges he killed his 30-year-old wife, Katrina Smith, as she considered a divorce.

ROCKFORD – The trial of Todd Smith, the Machesney Park man who has been in custody since 2012 on charges of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, is scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 28 in Rockford.

Smith is accused of beating Katrina Smith to death with a baseball bat in October 2012 and dumping her body in the Rock River near Byron. Prosecutors claim the couple was in the process of separating, and that Katrina was not living in their Machesney Park home when she was killed there Oct. 22.  According to police reports, Todd Smith killed his estranged wife when she returned to the property to do laundry.

Jury selection had been scheduled to start today for a possible two-week trial.

Winnebago County Judge Fernando Engelsma agreed to postpone the start of the trial to Jan. 9 at the request of Assistant Public Defender Margie O'Connor, Smith's lawyer.

O'Connor told Engelsma that she was informed last week about a trove of evidence that had been discovered in the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office. O'Connor said she initially had planned to ask that the evidence be barred from the trial, allowing the proceedings to begin. But she changed her mind after reviewing some of the contents.

"Some of it is favorable for the defense," O'Connor said.

She said she needs more time to review it. The material was said to include photographs and documentation from crime scene investigations, but it was not described in detail.

Days before the trial was to begin, a crime scene investigator came forward with 23 gigabytes of evidence that he apparently had kept by mistake on a flash drive.

All evidence in the more than 4-year-old case had long ago been requested under court orders, said Marilyn Hite Ross, criminal bureau chief for the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office.

Neither prosecutors nor defense attorneys had previously viewed the contents, Hite Ross said.

Deputy State's Attorney James Brun estimated that three-fifths of the evidence duplicated other materials already shared with the defense team.

But Engelsma granted the trial delay, noting that the remaining two-fifths of 23 gigabytes "is a substantial amount" of material.

ROCKFORD - Steadily plodding through 70 potential jury candidates, Winnebago County lawyers and a judge are facing an uphill slog to seat a jury in a high-profile murder trial.

Winnebago County Judge Fernando Engelsma removed more than a dozen members of the jury pool after the lunch break. Some jurors questioned privately about their knowledge of the case then returned to the jury box in the afternoon to be questioned by one of Smith's defense attorneys, Assistant Public Defender Margie O'Connor, or one of the prosecutors, Deputy State's Attorney James Brun. Both sides asked to exclude a nearly even number of candidates.

Todd Smith asked several years ago to move his trial out of Winnebago County, with his defense attorneys arguing he couldn't receive a fair trial here. That request was denied.

The trial is expected to resume Wednesday. Engelsma said it likely will continue into next week, prompting one member of the jury pool to exhale loudly in the courtroom.

UPDATE: ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Prosecutors paint a picture of a crumbling marriage and controlling husband who was tracking his wife's movements in the days before her death as they begin the murder trial of Todd Smith.

Smith is accused of killing his wife, Katrina Smith in October 2012.

Prosecutors say all the evidence points to Todd Smith as Katrina's killer. They say he was the last person to see her before she disappeared on October 30. They say her blood was found on a baseball bat in Todd's garage and tracking information from her car was on his computer.

Katrina's boss, Christina Gonzalez-Buyak, says Katrina talked of her wishes for a divorce and said Todd was controlling. Gonzalez-Buyak says Katrina was worried Todd was tracking her through her cell phone. She also talked about an incident where hundreds of fliers were distributed in the parking lot at work on October 9, the day after Katrina moved out of Todd's house. It accused Katrina of having an affair with a coworker, Guy Gabriel. In previous hearings, prosecutors said they found those fliers on Todd's computer.

Katrina's step-father Bruce Edlund says she was worried for her safety. Text messages were shown in court where Katrina is asking Bruce about how to get a FOID card so she could get a gun. She also asks if she needs the card to go to a shooting range.

Edlund also talked about the searches for Katrina in the weeks she was missing. He says Todd was there, but didn't help much, saying he wasn't enthusiastic and didn't do a thorough search.

Edlund says Todd was the beneficiary of a $330,000 life insurance policy. He says Katrina was the breadwinner of the family.

Defense attorneys however presented a different picture. One of a loving husband, worried about his wife who was singled out in a bad police investigation. In opening statements defense attorney Christine Barton says the evidence is unclear and inconclusive, saying investigators couldn't figure out the case, so they stretched the evidence to tie it to Todd. Barton says the real suspects were never investigated.

Defense attorneys also tried poking holes in the prosecutions characterization of Katrina as a conservative church-going woman. They say in the month before her death she started drinking and had an affair with her coworker Guy Gabriel. However Edlund, who confirmed the affair, said she wasn't acting differently and says the affair just shows how unhappy Katrina was in her marriage.

Katrina's body was found on November 9 in the Rock River near Byron.

If convicted Smith could face life in prison.

Day two of the murder trial of Todd Smith, the Machesney Park man accused of killing his wife in 2012, continued Thursday.

Multiple people took the witness stand Thursday to describe their time as volunteers searching for Katrina in October 2012.

Two witnesses described Todd Smith as being on his phone during the search for Katrina a few days after her disappearance. One witness, Victoria Lehrke, said Smith didn't seem like he wanted to be there and that he was worried about getting his clothes dirty.

Another witness, volunteer Judy Lasala, said she thought Smith might trip and fall down because he was on his phone so much.

Retired Winnebago County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigator Daniel Liston was called to the stand Thursday. Liston described investigating Katrina's disappearance near the area of Tetterhall Lane in Machesney Park.

ROCKFORD - Winnebago County detectives took a hard look at Todd Smith even before his wife's body was found.

Todd Smith reported his wife, Katrina Smith, 30, missing Oct. 23, 2012. They had been having marital problems and were separated. Katrina Smith was staying in a friend's condominium in Roscoe.

Retired Winnebago County Sheriff's Department Detective Vince Lindberg today testified at Todd Smith's first-degree murder trial that the defendant grew agitated when he was separated from friends and family members to answer questions Oct. 24, 2012. A day after giving an initial written statement to police, Todd Smith called Lindberg to complain about information police gave his family.

"He was upset because Detective (John) Berg told the family (Katrina Smith's) vehicle had been found with blood in the trunk of the vehicle," Lindberg testified. "He was very upset Detective Berg had told the family this information."

But for detectives this was a red flag: Police had not yet processed the car, found the blood or, Lindberg said, told the family this information.

Day three of the murder trial of Todd Smith, the Machesney Park man accused of killing his wife Katrina in 2012, continued Friday.

Ryan Bruce, a Byron firefighter, took the stand Friday. He testified that he was fishing on the Rock River October 31, 2012 when he saw what he thought was some trash in the river. He returned to the area later and discovered that there actually was a body in the river. At that point he called police.

Several members of Katrina's family were in tears during some of the testimony Friday. Several family members had to leave the courtroom when pictures of Katrina's body were shown.

Winnebago County Sheriff Investigator Tim Speer also took the stand Friday. Speer testified that he used a chemical tool to test for blood in Katrina's car. He says the tool showed there was blood in the trunk of her car.

Speer said that the same tool can be used to test for cleaning agents and that the steering wheel and gear shift in Katrina's car tested positive for those cleaning agents, indicating that those areas had been wiped clean.

Drew Anderson, a family friend of Todd Smith's, took the witness stand. Anderson says he has known Smith for his entire life.

Anderson testified that he and some friends went over to Todd and Katrina's house on November 19 to get some of Katrina's things to remember her by. He says that while he was there, Todd Smith asked him to get something behind a car at the house. Anderson says Todd asked him "is there a bat over there?" When Anderson said there wasn't, he says Todd look "distraught," and said "my fingerprints are all over the bat."

ROCKFORD - Katrina Smith's blood was found on a Louisville Slugger softball bat that may have been used to kill her, a key piece of DNA evidence introduced today at her husband's first-degree murder trial.

The bat was found by Winnebago County Sheriff's Department detectives in the garage of the Machesney Park home she had shared with her husband, Todd Smith, as they investigated her Oct. 22, 2012, disappearance.

Katrina Smith left her home in October 2012 to run errands and never came back. The next month her husband Todd was arrested and charged with four counts of first degree murder. Prosecutors allege he beat Smith and dumped her body which was later found in the Rock River.

On Monday, the judge granting Todd Smith a partial directed verdict, meaning the jury will only decided his fate when it comes to first degree murder charges, with the judge throwing out the felony murder charges.

Closing arguments in the murder trial of Todd Smith, the Machesney Park man accused of killing his wife Katrina in the fall of 2012, took place Wednesday morning.

To a packed courtroom Wednesday morning, the prosecution began their closing arguments by calling Todd Smith "controlling, manipulative, insecure." The state added that the trial is not about Todd, but Katrina, and that all roads lead back to Todd Smith as the killer.

Todd Smith's defense attorneys argued that there are too many unanswered questions in this case. They added that investigators focused on Todd from the beginning and excluded any evidence that did not point to him.

The defense also made claims that investigators on the case made a number of errors when collecting evidence.

The jury began their deliberations around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

UPDATE: Todd Smith sentenced to 59 years in prison

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Todd Smith maintains his innocence as he's sentenced to 59 year years in prison. Although he faced up to life in prison for the murder and concealment of his wife Katrina's body in 2012, 59 years is essentially a life sentence for the 49-year-old.
Smith started and ended his statement reading bible verses all while maintaining his innocence saying he believes he'll get a new trial.

"Although I am not guilty of the acts the state portrayed, I harbor no ill will towards anyone," he said during his allocution statement in court.

Todd smith will spend the rest of his life in prison. The Machesney Park man brutally killed his wife Katrina, beating her repeatedly in October 2012. He called Katrina's murder an evil and senseless tragedy.

"I'm sorry for failing in my role as husband and protector," he said.

Judge Fernando Engelsma had harsh words for Smith calling the crime unfathomable and his efforts in searches for his missing wife a slap in the face to her family and the community.
