Suspect in Alaska murder tied to other killings

(CNN) -- A suspected serial killer has killed for the last time.

Authorities say Israel Keyes, who was arrested and charged in the killing of an Alaskan barista, killed himself while in custody.

Before committing suicide on Sunday, Keyes confessed to at least seven other slayings, according to the FBI field office in Anchorage, Alaska, which on Monday asked for the public's help with tracing Keyes' travels over the years in the hopes of identifying any additional victims.

He crisscrossed the country, and authorities may never know how many he killed.

FBI Special Agent Jolene Godden and Anchorage Police Department Ofc. Jeff Bell tell Channel 2 Tuesday night that Keyes is believed to have committed a ninth murder in addition to the eight he already mentioned to authorities -- those of Koenig, Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt., four victims in Washington state and one on the East Coast. No details about the ninth death were released Tuesday.

In addition to the murders and two bank robberies in New York and Texas, investigators say Keyes may have committed the mid-1990s sexual assault of a minor in Oregon, which they describe as his first crime.

Israel Keyes, who's been implicated in at least eight murders, attended a Christian Identity church called The Ark

A confessed serial killer and bank robber who took his own life in an Alaska jail cell on Sunday was exposed to the racist and anti-Semitic beliefs of Christian Identity theology during his childhood in a rural corner of Washington state, Hatewatch has learned.

Israel Keyes, 34, now linked to at least eight murders throughout the United States in the past 11 years, was a childhood friend and neighbor in Stevens County, Wash., of terrorists Chevie and Cheyne Kehoe — two racist brothers now serving lengthy prison sentences for murder and attempted murder.

“The two families, the Keyeses and the Kehoes, were neighbors and friends and lived about a half mile apart off Aladdin Road north of Colville” in Stevens County, Wash., a source with direct knowledge of the situation said. “The kids in both families were home-schooled and they sometimes attended a Christian Identity church called The Ark, just up the road from their homes,” the source said.

The Ark, headed by 83-year-old Pastor Dan Henry, preaches that white people are the superior, chosen race and that the Bible is their story. Identity followers generally believe that modern-day Jews are not the real descendants of the Hebrews of the Bible, and many say that Jews are biologically descended from Satan. Identity believers often describe themselves as the true “Israel,” suggesting that Keyes’ first name is a reference to his family’s beliefs.

Israel Keyes, who apparently wasn’t given a middle name, was born in Utah to Mormon parents who purchased rural property in Stevens County, near the U.S.-Canadian border, when he was a child.  On a website for the general contracting business he owned, Keyes listed Colville, Wash., as his hometown and said he built his first log cabin in Stevens County when he was 16

Investigators: Keyes said he let his first victim go

ANCHORAGE — Back in the 1990s when he was a teenager, Israel Keyes picked his first victim, a teenage girl in Oregon, he later told investigators.

It was summer, sometime between 1996 and 1998, FBI special agent Jolene Goeden said in an interview Tuesday.

He admitted to "very violently sexually assaulting a young girl there," Goeden said. He thought she was 14 to 16 years old.

Investigators have not been able to find a report of that rape. They believe authorities were not alerted at the time.

"He had the intention, he said, of killing her but did not. And he did let her go," Goeden said.

The assault of the girl appears to be the first serious crime committed by Keyes, according to statements he made in numerous interviews spread over months, according to the FBI.

He was a methodical, cold killer who described himself as two different people to investigators. He didn't view his victims as human beings, investigators said. He read up on other serial killers and said he could relate to Ted Bundy, said Jeff Bell, an Anchorage police officer who repeatedly interviewed Keyes along with Goeden and others. Keyes also robbed banks and burglarized and burned down a home in Texas, he told investigators.

COLVILLE -- The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch blog reported serial killer Israel Keyes and the Kehoe brothers were neighbors and went to the same Colville Church.

The pastor of Our Place Fellowship denied the men were regular members.

Dan Henry said the Kehoe brothers, who made national headlines when one of them tried to shoot an Ohio state trooper in 1997, came to the church once -- and only once. Keyes attended a couple of times and never returned.

Henry said the two families acted like "hot shots" and he was turned off by their attidudes.

The Southern Poverty Law Center should be taken with a huge grain of salt.  They are very liberal.  They claim that the Family Research Counsel and Focus On The Family are both hate groups because they promote traditional family values.  I disagree and see the SPLC as a hate mongering group.  You either fall in line with their beliefs or you get labeled by them. 

Before taking this is fact please research.

I too had read that he was Amish.  That is one reason that I believed we hadn't seen his family commenting on his behavior.  I guess until LE makes a statement we'll just have to keep wondering.

ANCHORAGE - Serial killer Israel Keyes cut his wrist and used bedding from his jail cell in an attempt to strangle himself, according to a report by state troopers.

The state medical examiner's office still has not announced an official cause of death. And the Department of Corrections is still not commenting on why Keyes reportedly had been taken off of suicide watch.

They found he used a disposable razor embedded in a pencil to slit his wrist. How he got the razor, the Department of Corrections won't say.

And Keyes attempted to strangle himself with bedding.

Captain Craig Allen, commander of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation, explained: "In this particular circumstance, the bedding was around his throat or neck and the other end was attached to, in a loop to his foot, and just by extending his leg it causes enough tightening to create that strangulation event."

Keyes was alone in his cell, so foul play never was suspected.

Several bloody pages were found in the cell, and an FBI spokesman has confirmed that it's a suicide note.
"We've provided those to the FBI,” Allen said. “My understanding is the FBI has directed those to their crime lab or their laboratory in Quantico."

It will be the last look inside the twisted mind of a man who killed for pleasure.

Troopers say that video from the hallway outside Keyes' cell is being reviewed to see when he was checked on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane County Sheriff's deputies are combing through cold cases looking for any link to serial killer Israel Keyes.

Before killing himself in an Alaska jail, Keyes confessed to killing people across the country, including four people in Washington. He lived in Colville in the 1990's.

Two major crimes detectives will sit down and look through 45 cold case homicides and missing person files to see if any overlap with the time Keyes was in this area.

How investigators got Israel Keyes to confess

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Capturing Israel Keyes took the work of local, state and federal authorities in multiple jurisdictions across the country. Gaining the trust of a cold-blooded killer was a delicate balancing act.

"Sometimes he was more willing to discuss things and sometimes he wasn't, and that was really under his control," said Kevin Feldis, the U.S. Attorney for Alaska. "He could stop talking to us any time he wanted to."

Investigators were at his mercy. Keyes' bargaining chip-- 14 years of secrets about countless unsolved murders, cases authorities want to close.

"The level which he operated was probably more evil than anyone they had ever seen," said Frank Russo, the assistant U.S. Attorney for Alaska.

After his April arrest for the abduction and murder of Alaskan teenager Samantha Koenig, investigators began to build a rapport with Keyes and got him talking about his calculated kills.

"He described that he had a fairly normal childhood and this was a proclivity that he always had, enjoying watching things suffer," Russo said.

Keyes told them his first murder was soon after he left the military in 2000, claiming he'd killed at least eight people since then and hinting there may be more. Investigators say the scariest part was how competent and reasonable he was.

Prosecutors are now focused on his paper trail. They've subpoenaed airlines, car rental and credit card companies to physically plot out where he's been. They say the biggest challenge is that Keyes would go dark for periods of time to avoid detection. The FBI compiled a rough timeline of his travels that shows 35 trips throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. They've also released video clips of Keyes, hoping they trigger someone's memory and lead to clues about his other killings; remorseless murders he told prosecutors he did not regret.

"His only regret was that he didn't kill more people while he was out of jail," Russo said.

Israel Keyes 'Killed Up To 15 Victims'

The FBI is asking the public for help as it tries to connect past crimes to a suspected serial killer who took his own life.

Law enforcement officials believe Israel Keyes, who reportedly admitted to killing four people in Washington state, actually murdered up to 15 people across the country over more than a decade.

TUPPER LAKE — It was serial killer Israel Keyes who robbed the Community Bank here in April three years ago.

The truth about the robber and his crime, committed at gunpoint, emerged this week amid details Keyes provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in an unfolding sequence of horrendous crime stretching back nearly a decade.

Connections to this region are still coming to light.

On April 13 three years ago, Keyes walked into the small branch office of the Community Bank on Hosely Avenue and Park Street in Tupper Lake, and, brandishing a gun, demanded cash while ordering tellers to lie on the floor.

The robbery was never solved despite widespread distribution of a security-camera snapshot showing a thief's face hidden under a fake mustache.

Keyes told the FBI he robbed banks to fund his travels and buy supplies.

He had, apparently, been in and out of the area before and owned property and a weather-beaten house in Constable.

The grounds there were searched last October in connection with Keyes's confessions.

The gun and silencer he stole during the Currier abduction and murder was found in the Parishville Reservoir, according to the FBI.

At a news conference in Alaska earlier this week, the FBI told the Anchorage Daily News that Keyes had hidden stashes of weapons and items used to get rid of the bodies of those he murdered. One of the caches was located at Blake Falls Reservoir in St. Lawrence County, about 34 miles north of Tupper Lake

Wells pastor to preach at serial killer’s funeral

WELLS, TX (KTRE) - A pastor at the Church of Wells said he will be preaching at the funeral of a man who was arrested in Lufkin after killing an Alaska barista.

The pastor, Jacob Gardner, confirmed that Keyes' mother and his sisters are members of the church, and Keyes had visited them on a few occasions, right after he committed his latest crimes. The pastor did not divulge the names of the mother or sisters.

Gardner said Keyes visited his family, before they had moved to Wells, after Keyes killed Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt. The couple disappeared in June 2011.

Gardner said Keyes visited again after a bank robbery. He then visited his family when they were living in Indiana. Keyes' mother and sister then relocated to Wells with the rest of the church.

Keyes visited Wells in March to attend his sister's wedding, who married one of the brothers of the Church of Wells. Gardner said Keyes heavily defended his atheism. Keyes was arrested the next day in Lufkin.

"He stayed with us for multiple days during this time, obviously this was towards the end of the line after the death of Samantha Koenig and after all of those things," Gardner said. "Even at the wedding the Lord pled with  him and pled with him and in the midst of it all he wept and broke down weeping, balling, even wailing, but he would not repent."

"He said not 'everybody has morals like you' to one of the pastors in the church, 'not everybody has your morals' with an undertone of hate and murder in his heart," Gardner said.


The Church made headlines in May after a family, who was part of the church, waited 15 hours to call for emergency care after their three-day-old infant, Faith Pursley, died.

"What Israel was doing for those 10, 14 years however long that these crimes were taking place as he was seeking to save his life, seeking to save his life as he's running from the law," Gardner said. "We are not glad Israel Keyes is in hell, we believe he is, but we are not glad at that because God sent  him to this church multiple times seeking to plead with this man, even saved his own relatives, 3 of his sister and his own mother."

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The FBI says an admitted serial killer spent time in New Mexico earlier this year and now they want to know what exactly he was up to.

According to newly released documents, Israel Keyes, 34 drove through New Mexico in early March of this year.

"He didn't always stay where he landed he would land in one airport, rent a car and drive hundreds of miles," Rook said.
 
That is exactly what he did after murdering Koenig.
 
Following the ATM withdrawls the FBI was able to track Keyes as he drove through Arizona and New Mexico.
 
"There is of course a time lapse on the ATM's so ya know we were always ten to fifteen minutes behind this guy," Anchorage Police Detective Monique Doll said.
 
One of his stops was at Western Bank on Main Street in Lordsburg, New Mexico.
 
Investigators say in the early morning hours of March 8, 2012 he hit the ATM twice there before continuing down Interstate 10 to Texas but they're not sure if that is all he did while in the state.

Serial Killer Got ‘High’ from Killing, FBI Agent Says

(WASHINGTON) -- Confessed serial killer Israel Keyes relished the "rush" he got from traveling the country to execute meticulously planned murders, according to the FBI agent who spent months interviewing him.

"He liked what he was doing," FBI Special Agent Jolene Goeden told ABC’s Good Morning America Thursday. "He talked about the rush he got out of it, the adrenaline and kind of the high from it."

Keyes, 34, can be seen casually talking about his strategy for hunting and killing people over a coffee and bagel in videos released by the FBI. He was, by his own account, a split personality.

"There is no one who knows me or who has ever known me that knows anything about me, really," he told FBI investigators in an audio recording released to the media.

Others, he said, "will tell you something that doesn't line up with anything I tell you, because I'm two different people basically. The only person who knows about what I'm telling you, the kind of things I'm telling you, is me.".

Keyes said he had felt this duality for "14 years."

While Keyes told police that he would cross the country to find victims to kill because "he liked to do it," he also wanted to keep his confessions secret to protect his reputation.

Born in Utah to Mormon parents, Keyes was home schooled and attended a Christian Identity church called The Ark in tiny Colville, Wash., which has fewer than 5,000 residents. The church believes that Aryans, not Jews, are the true Israelites and created an anti-Semitic atmosphere. Keyes later described himself on his MySpace page as an atheist.

Among the Ark's other worshippers were Keyes' Colville neighbors and friends, convicted murderer Chevie Kehoe and his brother, Cheyne, according to Mark Potok, senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center and editor of the group's Hatewatch blog.

Keyes had a three year stint in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis from 1998 until 2001. After he left the Army, Keyes took a job working for the Makah Tribal Council in Neah Bay, Wash., until 2007.

He claims he began his murders while working for the tribal council. He told investigators that he "murdered a couple" between 2001 and 2005, and killed two people in separate incidents sometime in 2005 and 2006.

"It is unknown if the victims were residents of Washington or if they were vacationing in Washington but resided in another state," the FBI said in a release. "It is also possible Keyes abducted them from a nearby state and transported them to Washington."

Something about this guy reminds me of Gary Michael Hilton.  We have no clue how many deaths he's responsible for. 

Seems pretty fundamentalist and traditional to me.  Some people are more comfortable with a more classical style of worship.  I read their statement of faith.  Not any different from my own.  The manifesto makes them sound anti-modern church.  But I see Charles Spurgeon, John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, & David Brainerd in the header.  All very classical, fundmentalist theologians.

He looks like an ordinary young man.  I found two younger brothers in his friends list.  Not much on their pages but the usual stuff of a guy in his twenties.  One has his cell number on there.  What is it with these young people and their naivety?

Yes KittyMom you are right. It is a fundamentalist group. We all have our on way to worship. I also read their statement of Faith and their Manifesto also. I guess I am one of those more classical style people.

I guess I'm a bit surprised that he was able to be so successful at robbing banks.  I sort of thought that type of thing was not happening as much with all the technology used today.  Our town has had a couple of banks hit in the past few years, but the perps were caught fairly quickly.  Both had camera footage of the getaway cars and pretty good photos of the guys.

Israel Keyes rejected religion, says pastor who will speak at his funeral

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — During his last days of freedom, before he admitted to killing Anchorage teenager Samantha Koenig and at least seven other people, Israel Keyes was at his sister's Texas wedding, crying and ranting at one point about how he did not believe in God.

That's according to Keyes' mother's pastor, Jacob Gardner, who related the story Thursday in a phone interview with the Daily News. Gardner and Keyes' sisters and mother were driving north from their home in Wells, Texas, to Eastern Washington, where Keyes' funeral is planned for Sunday.

Gardner said Keyes visited his family in the tiny East Texas town of Wells in February, after taking a cruise. He stayed with his mother and four sisters, who belong to Gardner's Church of Wells, for a few days on that visit, one of two occasions he was in Wells during the spring of 2012, Gardner said.

That event was his sister's wedding in mid-March, said Gardner, a vocal proponent of his church and evangelical Christianity. Keyes was the oldest of 10 siblings, Gardner said. His mother and four sisters belong to the church, while three sisters and two brothers do not, the pastor said. Law enforcement officials would not discuss Keyes' family or his daughter, who they said is currently living with family. Keyes' father died years ago, according to investigators who interviewed him.Keyes, an atheist, bristled at the churchgoers' attempts to convert him, including a conversation with his soon-to-be brother- and sister-in-law a day or two before his sister's wedding, Gardner said.

Gardner said Keyes' mother heard "bits and pieces" of her son's alleged crimes in the weeks and months that followed. She was now willing to let Gardner share his stories about the earlier encounters with Keyes, because she thought people were too fearful and focused on her son as a serial killer, not fearful of the "eternal" consequences of living a life without seeking Christian salvation

Gardner said he was preparing a sermon for the ceremony, currently set to be held in Deer Park, Wash., between Colville and Spokane. It would be a convenient location for Keyes' family and their friends to attend and was home to the nearest funeral home with an attached chapel, Gardner said.

ANCHORAGE - Jake Gardner says he never met Israel Keyes, but he knows Keyes’ family well.

Gardner is an elder with The Church of Wells in Wells, Texas.

Speaking from Colorado, Gardner told CBS 11 News on Thursday that he’s on his way to Washington State to preside over Keyes’ funeral on Sunday. He said the family chose a chapel near to where Keyes spent 14 years growing up.

FBI Agents in Oregon have received information from the FBI's Anchorage Division that narrows the search for a woman who was allegedly raped by accused serial killer Israel Keyes. Keyes committed suicide while in jail this past weekend as he awaited trial for the murder of a barista, Samantha Koenig, last February in Anchorage.

Keyes told the FBI Agents in Alaska that he raped - but did not kill - his first victim in Oregon sometime between 1996 and 1998. He said the girl was 14 - 18 years old. The sexual assault occurred on the Deschutes River near Maupin, Oregon. The victim was with friends and Keyes was able to discreetly separate her from the friends. To date, authorities have not been able to find any relevant police reports that would fit this scenario, and it is possible that the victim never reported it. If Keyes was being accurate about the time period and the girl's age, she would now be in her late 20's - early 30's. She may have lived in the area or simply been visiting the area on vacation.

 FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez says 34-year-old Israel Keyes prepared a body disposal cache for a future target. Murder kits also have been recovered in New York and Vermont.
 
Authorities have recovered the cache containing a shovel and two large bottles of Drano from Eagle River north of Anchorage. Gonzalez says the drain de-clogger would speed up decomposition of a body.

WOW!  That is some planning.  And aren't those items pretty expensive?  How did afford to buy all those guns and silencers?  He couldn't have been that good at robbing banks, could he?  And you know, I have a hard time remembering where I put my keys.  How did he remember locations where he buried this stuff around the country?  Unless these were spots that he frequently visited?

Yet Keyes wasn't completely without morals, Russo said. He knew it was wrong to kill, though he planned to continue. One Keyes idea involved moving away from Alaska to take advantage of the chaos and potential contracting work left by hurricanes.  "He thought it would provide him good cover to kill people and he'd have good work," Russo said. 

"He goes, 'Oddly the bank robbery I did in New York got more publicity than the person I took and killed,’ " Russo said.
Keyes also told investigators that because of his daughter, children were off limits. That's one reason he chose to kill the Curriers in Vermont -- they had no children

Suspect used ATM in Lordsburg

Lordsburg, N.M. —
Earlier this year, residents in  one New Mexico town had a possible killer among them.
Video shows suspected serial killer Israel Keyes stopped  in Lordsburg.

 “For the individual to come here, all the way down to the state of New Mexico, it was quite shocking,” said Lordsburg Police Chief Marcus Martinez. He also mentioned his office was contacted by the FBI in March, alerting him to Keyes presence.

“The individual actually used an ATM machine here and was also at one of the truck stops here in Lordsburg,” Martinez said.

It was a few weeks after Keyes is believed to have abducted, assaulted and dismembered his final victim, 18-year-old Alaskan barista Samantha Koenig.

Authorities said Keyes then flew to Nevada and drove to Texas, stopping and using Koenig’s ATM card in Lordsburg.

Police don’t believe he took more victims during his stay in the state.

“We actually haven't had any reports of missing people around that time frame,” Martinez said.

So I was just reading an article on Foxnews about how the FBI think that Keyed was targeting the boyfriend when he waited after the coffee shop closed and then went to the house to steal the ATM card and the bf saw him standing by the car wearing a mask.  It hit me.....Holly Bobo in TN.  If Keyed could travel like he did to kill the couple in Vermont, could he have passed through TN on an earlier killing spree?

Authorities: No link seen with serial killer, Celina Cass

Authorities said Monday there appears to be no connection between Celina Cass, the Coos County 11-year-old murdered 17 months ago, and Israel Keyes, a serial killer whose victims included a couple in neighboring Vermont. Keyes was found dead in his Anchorage, Alaska, jail cell Sunday.

Keyes has been implicated in the disappearance and believed murder of an Essex, Vt., couple in early June 2011, nearly two months before Cass was reported missing from her West Stewartstown home and then found a week later submerged in a Connecticut River impoundment.

A federal prosecutor in Alaska told the New Hampshire Union Leader that Keyes, 34, was not believed to be in New Hampshire during Cass' late July 2011 disappearance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Feldis said investigators tracked Keyes' travel through credit cards, plane tickets and rental cars.

Records show he was in Alaska when Cass disappeared in late July.

"Our investigation indicates he was not in New Hampshire at that period of time," Feldis said.

In New Hampshire, homicide prosecutor Jane Young said "our investigation into Celina's murder continues, and that death (of Keyes) does not impact the course of our investigation." She said state police did look into the possibility of Keyes involvement in the Cass murder after national news reported his connection to the disappearance of the Vermont couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier. Their bodies have not been found.

In January, New Hampshire authorities empaneled an investigative grand jury and called several witnesses involved in the Cass case, including people who were at the family's West Stewartstown home on the night of her disappearance. Nothing publicly has come of the grand jury work, and Young said she is barred from discussing grand jury proceedings.

She said leads still surface in the case, and investigators are reviewing past witness statements.

FBI special Agent Jolene Goeden told the Burlington Free Press that financial records show Keyes was elsewhere on March 19, 2004, when the 17-year-old Maitland of Sheldon disappeared after leaving work at a Montgomery restaurant.

Here's another article in regard to Israel Keyes I just came across. I think it's important to look at where he was, who he associated and etc., even as a child, and ruling out cases and information is important too.  Only Israel Keyes would know all the terrible things he's done, but it's like peeling layers off an onion as we look into his life.  JMHO  It looks like a possible association with Kevin Harpham was ruled out.

ANCHORAGE - It has been more than a month since confessed serial killer Israel Keyes committed suicide in an Anchorage jail cell, yet Keyes' legal team is still fighting on his behalf.

Although federal prosecutors went through the formality of dismissing charges against Keyes in the wake of his suicide, the defense lawyers are still active.
This comes to light because of a motion filed by the online newspaper Alaska Dispatch.
The Dispatch has moved in U.S. District Court to have all records in the Keyes case unsealed for public inspection.
In response, Keyes' lawyers -- a federal public defender based in Anchorage and a two-person team from a Seattle law firm -- have filed a motion asking for a delay in the release of any information.

Frank Russo of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Anchorage said he does not know why Keyes' lawyers are still involved in the case, something the likes of which he said he's never seen before.
And Russo said by Thursday he expects to file a motion with the court asking for dismissal of their request on behalf of Keyes.
And of course one issue here is the federal tax dollars being expended on behalf of a dead man who confessed to killing at least 11 people.

FBI needs help piecing together dead serial killer's crimes

While supposed serial killer Israel Keyes did kill himself in his Anchorage jail cell last month, the FBI still needs the public’s help to build a narrative of his crimes.
Investigators believe Keyes killed at least eight people across the U.S., zig-zagging the country kidnapping victims, robbing them and killing some. TIME Magazine reported in December that investigators didn’t know about the string of crimes until Keyes told them.
His spree lasted from 2001 until Feb. 2012.

In March of last year, a Lufkin highway patrolman spotted Keyes driving his Ford Focus and pulled it over, recognizing it from a security video. Keyes was arrested and extradited. He confessed –– then confessed to at least eight murders. There may be more: Staring down at a possible death sentence, Keyes cut his wrists and hanged himself in his jail cell.
FBI investigators have pieced together Keyes’ travels since. And between Feb. 12 and Feb. 16, Special Agent Diego Rodriguez says he was in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
He told police that he was in Azle, Aledo and Cleburne. And, at some point, his car got stuck in a “muddy, rural area.” Rodriguez wants to speak to anyone who may have helped Keyes with his car.

FBI says serial killer may have been in Waco area, info sought

The FBI is asking for help from the public to get information on a confessed, recently deceased serial killer who may have been in the Waco area last year.

Federal authorities say Israel Keyes, who is thought to be involved in kidnappings and homicides across the United States from 2001 through March 2012, was in the Glen Rose and Dallas-Fort Worth areas between Feb. 12, 2012, and Feb. 16, 2012.

A Reuters news report indicates that authorities think Keyes, a 34-year-old U.S. Army veteran, may be responsible for the deaths of eight to 11 people.

It has not been confirmed that Keyes would have been in the Waco or Austin areas during that time, but because of the proximity to Glen Rose, it is a possibility, FBI Special Agent Erik Vasys said. Glen Rose is about 70 miles northwest of Waco.

Vasys said there is no direct evidence linking Keyes to a crime in this area, but added that Keyes’ mere presence raises suspicion that he may have committed an unknown offense.

Agents want to identify anyone who came into contact with Keyes and are seeking information about “any and all” of Keyes’ activities while in Texas, states a news release issued by the FBI to media Thursday afternoon.

The moment I read about this guy I thought of the Seattle librarian and her daughter killed on the trailhead in Snohomish County several years ago, a case still unsolved. I'm glad authorities are looking into the connection. It was a totally senseless murder - like all of this guy's.

Handwritten notes found under Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes' body after he killed himself contained poetry about superficiality and consumerism in American society, along with disturbing ramblings about an unnamed victim under his control.

But the writings contained no specific details about his crimes and no information useful in the investigation, such as the names of additional victims, the FBI said Wednesday in releasing the notes.

The writings were on a yellow legal pad found underneath Keyes, who slit his wrist Dec. 2 in his Anchorage jail cell using the blade of a disposable razor that he had embedded in a pencil. He also had strangled himself with a bedsheet.

The notes were at first too bloody to read, so they were sent to an FBI laboratory in Virginia and restored.

The FBI determined Keyes left behind no code or hidden message in his writings. The agency offered no commentary on their meaning.

The first two pages of the sometimes illegible words make reference to U.S. colonizing and consuming.

"Land of the free, home of the lie, land of the scheme, Americanize! Consume what you don't need, stars you idolize, pursue what you adore it is a dream, then its American die," Keyes wrote.

The final two pages are far darker, referencing a person under his control, the person's obvious fear, and inevitable doom.

"You are my love at first sight, and though you're scared to be near me, my words penetrate your thought now in an intimate prelude," Keyes wrote.

Alaska (Reuters) - A confessed Alaska serial killer waxed poetic in a blood-soaked suicide note about the dread his victims felt before they died, but law enforcement officials said on Wednesday the note yielded few clues to aid investigators searching for his victims.

Israel Keyes wrote the four-page note, made public by the FBI, before he killed himself in December while awaiting trial on charges of kidnapping and killing an Anchorage barista who vanished from an espresso stand last year.

Keyes, in interviews with investigators, had admitted killing 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig, whose body was found in an iced-over lake. Before his death, he also confessed to killing at least seven other people across the country, and investigators have said the true toll could be higher.

His rambling note, written in pencil on lined paper, was thoroughly examined by cryptologists at the bureau's Virginia laboratory, said Eric Gonzalez, special agent for the FBI in Anchorage. But it contained no useful information.

"I looked in your eyes, they were so dark warm and trusting as though you had not a worry or care. The more guiless (sic) the gaze the better potential to fill up those pools with your fear," said the note, which mentioned no names and left no explicit explanation for Keyes' actions.

Another line read: "Your face framed in dark curls like a portrait, the sun shone through highlight of red, what color I wonder, and how straight will it turn plastered back with the sweat of your dread."

Other portions of the note, which also railed against consumerism and conventional American life, appeared to be attempts at poetry.

"You may have been free, you loved living your lie, fate had its own scheme, crushed like a bug you still die," it said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Confessed serial killer Israel Keyes was mistakenly issued a razor before he committed suicide, according to a report released Wednesday by the Alaska Department of Corrections that also said "it appears that razor was not retrieved."
Keyes' body was found in his jail cell on Dec. 2, months before he was to have gone on trial for the 2012 slaying of 18-year-old Anchorage barista Samantha Koenig.

Though Keyes' death was classified a suicide, the exact cause is unknown pending autopsy results, the report says.

Before he died, Keyes told investigators he had killed Koenig and at least seven other people across the country, including Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vt. Investigators believe there could be more victims in Washington, Oregon and Texas.

The state had previously denied an open records request from The Associated Press for details of events surrounding Keyes' death. Corrections officials didn't immediately return phone calls from the AP Wednesday.

ust about everywhere Israel Keyes went, he killed. And he went a lot of places. Authorities say the confessed serial killer traveled thousands of miles crisscrossing the country — even into Canada and Mexico — to leave a homicidal trail that is still being dissected.
Keyes was in North Texas one year ago this month when authorities say he spent Feb. 12-16 driving around Azle, Aledo and Cleburne in a rented car. According to FBI Special Agent Jolene Goeden, on Feb. 16 Keyes robbed a bank in Azle and burglarized and set fire to a house in Aledo. The homeowners were not home, she said.
No murder cases have been connected to him here yet, but one person who has studied Keyes says he doesn’t believe the Army veteran was here on a vacation.
“Wherever Israel Keyes passed through, you can believe someone wound up dead,” said investigative journalist M. William Phelps, star of the Investigative Discovery Network show Dark Minds.

Serial killer Israel Keyes was willing to make a deal. He would give investigators the location of two bodies, a name and maybe, if he felt like it, a murder weapon. The price? A cigar, he said cheerfully.

In roughly 15 hours of newly released audio from jailhouse interviews with Keyes, the calculated killer discussed his motives, triggers and limits as he teased investigators with tidbits of information about up to a dozen other killings around the country.

A mostly jovial Keyes, 34, calmly and cavalierly chatted with investigators in the sessions, but made it abundantly clear throughout every conversation that he was in charge.

"All right," he said. "I'll give you two bodies and a name...I can give you one of the murder weapons and the rest of the story, like everything that happened, but I'm not going to give you the rest [today]."

He stopped and then added with a chilling levity, "If I get a cigar."

The authorities obliged, even asking if he wanted to smoke the cigar before or after the conversation.

"I'll do half a smoke before and if I can get the rest of it afterward," Keyes said.

After the smoke break, Keyes gave them the name, "Currier." It was the last name of a Vermont couple, Bill and Lorraine Currier, who had vanished in June 2011. He then used a Google map to show where their house was in Vermont and the place where their bodies could be found.

Police knew he had robbed a bank while he was in Texas, but he offered to tell them more.

"If you want, I can give you arson in Texas. I burned a house down, but I want a cigar for it," he said before laughing

"I was going to grab somebody from an ATM and take them to a house, but there were a lot of cops in Texas so I guess I kind of chickened out a little bit," he told investigators with a hint of embarrassment.

Keyes described an urge that would come over him every so often to "do something," whether it be a robbery, arson or murder. Doing one of these would usually quell the desire for a period of time, but he found himself wanting more as his crimes got more attention. It was at this point that he began to unravel.

"After the stuff in Alaska, I couldn't concentrate anymore on anything but that sort of thing, and just lost interest in work and whatever day-to-day stuff there was," Keyes said. "That's always the reason I've done the kind of things I've done, mostly for the adrenaline if not really for money."

A serial killer who committed suicide in an Alaska jail last year confessed to murdering at least 11 people across the country. But Israel Keyes didn't name names, and investigators trying to figure out who he killed are running into a major stumbling block: There is no unified, mandatory national database for missing persons.

One of the few known victims was Anchorage resident Samantha Koenig. She was selling coffee at an espresso stand outside a gym when Keyes abducted and killed her. Her father, James, a burly man with icy blue eyes, holds back tears as he talks about the ordeal.

Even though the mystery of his own daughter's disappearance has been solved, Koenig has stayed involved with advocates for missing persons, trying to figure out who else Keyes killed.

Struggling To Piece Together Different Databases

In a dimly lit back office at the Anchorage Police Department, investigators are piecing together Keyes' travels on a map. They say he may have killed other people in places he traveled to over the past decade. And he traveled a lot: to Seattle, Los Angeles, Houston and Chicago, among other cities.

Anchorage police officer Jeff Bell says that because Keyes killed himself, they're trying to make this map of travels speak for him, but it's difficult because of the kinds of victims he picked.

"He claimed that he could look at someone and decide [that] some people just look like they would be more missed than others," Bell says.
Bell, who interrogated Keyes extensively, says Keyes preyed on people in remote locations, like in parks and along trails. With only a few exceptions, Keyes took the names of his victims to the grave. And Bell says using multiple existing missing persons databases run by many different parties — state, county and local officials as well as nonprofits — is inconsistent, confusing and overwhelming.
"I remember getting the list of missing people and it was depressing because there was a printed stack of papers that was at least 3 inches thick," Bell says.

Although Bell says it sometimes seems futile, he still rakes through evidence and combs through the killer's home computer, hoping to identify other victims.

No Reporting Required

Bell isn't working the Keyes case alone. The FBI's lead agent, Jolene Goeden, wishes there were a better option, too. Using what they've learned from the Keyes case, Bell and Goeden say it's critical that there be a single, national database for missing adults that everybody uses.

"Unlike children, where you have the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, there is no such thing for adults," Goeden says.
But the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is federally mandated and has long-term government funding. The closest thing to that for adults is the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, or NamUs, which is funded by the Justice Department. But it's not required by Congress and doesn't have a long-term funding source.

Todd Matthews, director of communications for NamUs, helps run the database out of the University of North Texas. "A federal mandate would help to bring the compliance and force people to do what they need to do to get the cases into the system," he says. "You know, a one-stop shop."

ANCHORAGE, Alaska –  The FBI on Monday released an updated timeline of travels and crimes by Israel Keyes, a confessed Alaska serial killer who is believed to have killed 11 people before committing suicide in his jail cell last year.

The timeline sheds some new light on a mysterious case that left a trail of unsolved killings around the country. FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez said the goal of releasing the information is to identify victims who remain unknown, and provide some closure to their families.

"We've exhausted all our investigative leads," Gonzalez said.

The FBI documents said Keyes frequented prostitutes during his travels and killed an unidentified couple in Washington state sometime between July 2001 and 2005. Keyes also told investigators he committed two separate murders between 2005 and 2006, disposing of at least one of the bodies in Lake Crescent, near Port Angeles, Wash.

The following is a timeline that articulates the information provided by Keyes and known to law enforcement about Keyes’ criminal activities. It also includes travel dates/locations investigators believe Keyes may have committed a homicide:

Summer 1997 or Summer 1998: Keyes stated he abducted a female in the late afternoon or early evening while she and friends were tubing on the Deschutes River. Keyes sexually assaulted the female. He let her go and sent her on her tube back down the river. The victim in this case was between 14 and 18 years old. Investigators do not believe this sexual assault was reported to law enforcement. Keyes was living in Maupin, Oregon at the time and the abduction location is believed to be near Maupin.

July 2001: Keyes was discharged from the U.S. Army.

July 2001 to October 2001: Keyes resided in Neah Bay, Washington and committed his first homicide. The identity and location of the victim are unknown.

July 2001 to 2005: Keyes stated he murdered an unidentified couple in Washington. Keyes refused to tell law enforcement if the couple was married or what their relationship to one another was. It is unknown if the victims were residents of Washington, tourists, or residents he abducted from a nearby state and transported to Washington. Keyes alluded to the fact these victims were buried in a location near a valley. Keyes may have moved the victim’s car to place distance between where the vehicle was found and where the crime occurred.

2005 to 2006 (summer/fall months): Keyes admitted that he committed two murders independent of one another. Keyes used his boat to dispose of the bodies of these victims. Keyes stated at least one of the bodies was disposed of in Crescent Lake in Washington where he used anchors to submerge the body. Keyes reported the body was submerged in more than 100 feet of water. Keyes may have moved the victim’s car to place distance between where the vehicle was found and where the crime occurred. The identity of these victims is unknown.

March 1, 2007 to March 9, 2007: Keyes drove from Neah Bay, Washington to Anchorage, Alaska where he resided until is his arrest. Keyes traveled the Alaska-Canadian Highway making known stops in Cache Creek, British Columbia; Watson Lake, Yukon Territory; Destruction Bay, Yukon Territory; and Teslin, Yukon Territory. Keyes crossed the border into Alaska on March 9, 2007.

October 31, 2008 to November 5, 2008: Keyes flew to Seattle following travel to multiple other states, including North Dakota and Arizona. On October 31st, Keyes rented a car (2008 PT Cruiser) in Seattle. On November 2, 2008, Keyes flew from Seattle to Boston. He returned to Seattle and flew back to Anchorage on November 5, 2008. Law enforcement believes Keyes may have engaged in criminal activity on this trip and is seeking any information about Keyes activities during this timeframe.

April 9, 2009: Keyes admitted to abducting a female victim from a state on the east coast and transported that person over multiple state lines into New York. The victim is buried in upstate New York. Investigators do not believe this victim is buried on the property Keyes owns in Constable, New York.

April 10, 2009: Keyes robbed Community Bank in Tupper Lake, New York. After the bank robbery Keyes stated he parked in a nearby campground outside of the area to wait for the emergency response vehicles to pass. He stated he sat in this campground for several hours.

July 9, 2010 to July 12, 2010: Keyes flew from Anchorage to Sacramento, California and traveled to Auburn, California. He rented a vehicle (black Ford Focus) and drove approximately 280 miles during the three days. Law enforcement believes Keyes may have engaged in criminal activity during this travel and is seeking any information about Keyes activities during this trip.

April/May 2011: Keyes staked out a park near Point Woronzof in Anchorage, Alaska. He admitted he intended to shoot a couple sitting in a car but his plans were disrupted by a police officer that pulled into the parking lot. Keyes turned his attention to the police officer and almost shot the officer. Keyes stated he chose not to shoot the officer or the couple when a second police officer drove into the parking lot.

May 2011: Keyes reported he staked out the North Fork Trailhead in Eagle River, Alaska with the intention of abducting someone. He prepared a cache a short distance up the road that contained Drano and a shovel which he intended to use to dispose of the body. Keyes denied taking a victim from this location.

June 8, 2011: Keyes flew from Anchorage to Chicago on June 2, 2011. He rented a car and drove to Essex, Vermont. On June 8, 2011, Keyes admitted to the abduction and murder of Bill and Lorraine Currier. Keyes disposed of a weapon stolen from the Currier home and the gun he used to shoot Bill Currier in Blakes River Falls Reservoir. These weapons and a nearby cache were recovered by the FBI. Following the murder, Keyes traveled around the east coast before driving back to Chicago. On June 15, 2011, Keyes flew from Chicago to San Francisco, only staying one night, returning to Anchorage on June 16, 2011.

February 1, 2012: Keyes admitted to the abduction and murder of Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, Alaska. He disposed of her body in Matanuska Lake near Palmer, Alaska.

February 2, 2012 to February 18, 2012: Keyes flew to New Orleans where he went on a cruise until February 11th. After the cruise, he drove from New Orleans to Texas. Although he denied it, investigators believe Keyes may be responsible for a homicide in Texas or a surrounding state during this time. In the morning hours of February 16, 2012, Keyes set a home on fire in Aledo, Texas. Following the arson, he robbed National Bank of Texas in Azle, Texas.

Additional Caches:

Keyes admitted to burying a cache of money and guns near Green River, Wyoming. Known dates of travel to the Wyoming area are September 2007, July 2008, and September 2011.
Keyes admitted to burying a cache near Port Angeles, WA. Date unknown.

Additional Homicides:

Keyes provided additional details regarding the abduction and murder of a female. The female is described as having pale skin, possibly having a wealthy grandmother, and driving an older car at the time of her abduction.

Keyes indicated he committed only one murder in addition to Samantha Koenig in which the body was recovered. In this homicide, Keyes reported doing something to the victim’s body or moving the body to a location where, if found, it would appear as though the victim died from an accident. In this situation, the body was recovered and authorities ruled the death accidental.

Keyes traveled internationally and it is unknown if he committed any homicides while outside of the United States. In addition to the specific dates below, it is important to note that while living in New York, Keyes was in close proximity to the border with Canada and may have crossed into Canada on multiple occasions. He reported several trips to Montreal in which he sought out prostitutes. In addition, on his way to Alaska in 2007, Keyes drove alone through Canada. Law enforcement is aware of the following dates of international travel:

In a statement issued Monday afternoon, the FBI office in Anchorage said agents have now added three more to that grim tally, based on his statements:
 
-- a pale-skinned woman in an older car, "possibly having a wealthy grandmother"
-- one in which the victim was posed to make it look like the death had been an accident
 
-- one "in Texas or a surrounding state" that he had denied committing before his death.

FBI tracking confessed serial killer's time spent in Houston

A suspected serial killer spent time in Houston and other Texas towns days before his arrest and his claim of a country-crossing killing spree, officials said.

In the days before his arrest on March 13 in Lufkin for using Koenig's ATM card, Keyes was in Houston, Humble, Shepherd, Dallas/Fort Worth and Glen Rose.

FBI officials said his travels in the area began Feb. 12, when he rented a blue Kia Soul from a rental agency in Houston. Rental records show he logged 2,847 miles on the car. He used ATMs at banks in Shepherd and Humble and they believe his rental car got stuck in the mud in a rural area near Cleburne. They said he spent a lot of his time in Texas in the Dallas area, where he had relatives. In Glen Rose, he visited a cemetery. He set a house on fire in Aledo and robbed bank in Azel.

When he was arrested, he had the phone numbers of three Houston prostitutes on him.

Officials said Keyes was 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 190 pounds. Anyone who saw him or had contact with him is urged to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The FBI did not specifically say what drew Keyes to Texas, but he has relatives who spent time in East Texas and he was stationed for a time at Fort Hood near Killeen while in the Army.

At least one local sheriff hasn’t ruled him out in a double killing, even though the crime doesn’t track with the FBI’s timeline.

The bodies of Duane Arland Benson and his wife, Breanda Scheets Benson, were discovered in their rural home near Godley on Feb. 1, 2012 — the same day Keyes kidnapped Koenig in Alaska. They had been shot.

The medical examiner, however, believes that the couple had been dead for several days before they were found.

Godley is about 12 miles northwest of Cleburne. Keyes was in the Cleburne area between Feb. 12 and 16, according to the FBI. His rental car, a 2011 Kia Soul, got stuck in the mud near Nolan River Mall.

He is also believed to have visited Post Oak Cemetery in Glen Rose, southwest of Cleburne.

Despite lacking evidence that Keyes was in Texas when the Bensons were killed, Johnson County Sheriff Bob Alford said investigators haven’t ruled out his involvement.

“We’re very familiar with him,” Alford said. “He is a person of interest to us. Whoever did this knew what they were doing. They surprised them.”

After killing Koenig, Keyes flew to Houston on Feb. 2. He rented the Kia from Thrifty, stayed in Lafayette, La., for three nights and New Orleans for one, and embarked on a Carnival cruise from Feb. 6 to 11. Then, he returned to Texas.

The fire near Aledo was set on Feb. 16, 2012.

Keyes told investigators that he was on an adrenaline rush after killing Koenig, fueled party by reading news reports while in Texas. Setting the fire at 201 E. Terrace Court was spontaneous, he said. The idea occurred to him as he was rummaging through the house.

“It’s not so much why I did it. It’s just more like, ‘Why not?’” he told investigators during an April 17, 2012, interview with the FBI. Audio recordings of the session were posted by the Alaska Dispatch.

In the same session, Keyes said he contemplated killing someone else in Texas but decided not to, partly because he saw so many law officers on his travels.

“I was going to grab someone from an ATM and take them to the house, but there are a lot of cops in Texas, so I guess I chickened out a little bit,” Keyes said.

Keyes claimed to have watched the fire burn from a hillside next to a church, but Padgett, the fire investigator, said he doubts that happened.

“I don’t know where he would have watched it from a distance,” he said. “We had people all over the place responding to that fire.”

Victims chosen at random

Later that day, about 16 miles north of Aledo, Keyes robbed the First National Bank of Texas in Azle.

Azle investigators know that he first staked out the bank: A property owner had chased him away from a nearby parking lot.

Keyes was calm and willing to back up his threats if the bank employees didn’t cooperate, said Azle police Sgt. K.D. Rogers, who watched surveillance video of the robbery.

“You can see his finger on the trigger,” Rogers said. “You normally don’t see that in bank robberies. It was pretty clear what his intentions were if someone didn’t do what he wanted them to do. He wasn’t going to leave until he got all of the money from the tellers.”

The next time Keyes’ movements were tracked was Feb. 24, when he took a photograph of Koenig’s body back in Alaska with a 4-day-old issue of the Anchorage Daily News , making it appear that the young barista was still alive so he could seek a ransom.

Before he committed suicide in his jail cell last year, confessed serial killer Israel Keyes confirmed some of his crimes in police interviews.

FBI agent Jeff Bell described Keyes as a "strange, calculated guy [who] in the beginning enjoyed talking about the crimes he committed."

Authorities said the unsolved cases include women near Cleburne, Glen Rose, and Lufkin — all places where Keyes was known to have been.

"Anybody who saw him anywhere in Texas, we'd be interested in talking with them," Bell said.

Driving a blue 2012 Kia Soul, Keyes traveled through the Lone Star State in early 2012, according to to federal agents. In fact, they believe Keyes was in North Texas in mid-February last year when, Bell said, the killer went off the grid.

Around that time, investigators suspect Keyes was responsible for a house fire in Aledo and a bank robbery in Azle. Johnson County detectives are looking into the possibility he may have committed a murder there.

I JUST thought of a case when I was looking at another thread. This was from a guy years ago he went missing...everyone said he would never leave...police say he had card activity in Texas I believe...oh I wish I could recall the name. I believe this guy was from the eastern northern area. Young...between 18 and 22. I know that is not a lot of information.

Wish I could help with a name labubske.  I tell you it still freaks me out that he robered the local bank by me.

It's okay. Maybe I will think of his name. It seems like his name began with a J. He went missing after Lindsay Baum. I looked back at my old posts here but I didn't see anything, so I believe I researched it over at True Crimes forum when it was opened. The guy had a kid I believe. He had his vehicle and just went missing. Then police found activity from his card in another state and family said there is no way that he would just leave...I want to say that state is Texas. But he came from the North or Northeast. Oh, how I wish I could remember. How scary that he was so close to you. I could not imagine...that evilness so close to me.

Perhaps Muffy or Texasmom will recall, they are both great with Texas happenings.

LAST DAY IN TOWN
Here is what is known about Cabinaw’s last day in the region. After
finishing work at Dave’s Garage in Traverse City, Cabinaw joined some
friends at Hickory Hills to play frisbee golf (he was an avid player).
After they finished he was invited by his friend and playing partner Gary
Wittig to go to a party. Cabinaw declined, saying he had homework to
complete. Around 7:30 p.m. he dropped Wittig off at the lighthouse pole
across from the beach volleyball courts in Traverse City. 
After that it is all a mystery. Cabinaw’s bank card was used around 9 p.m.
for a $5 purchase in Buckley. The clerk doesn’t remember him.
At 2 a.m., Cabinaw is on video at a Kalamazoo gas station using his bank
card but at 1 a.m. he made his monthly call to the military to notify them
that he was still in school. That call pinged off a tower in Oklahoma.
Cabinaw’s bank card was used next at a gas station in Fort Worth, Texas
the next day for $30. A few hours later, his card was used again for $30
at a gas station in Sweetwater, Texas where the video did not show who
made the purchase. That was the last time his card was used, and after a 1
a.m. phone call his phone was not used again.

FBI: Serial killer Keyes may have killed missing New Jersey woman

Federal agents say a missing New Jersey woman may be one of 11 victims believed to have been slain by admitted serial killer Israel Keyes.

Investigators believe the woman Debra Feldman, 49, was last seen at her Hackensack home on April 8, 2009. She has not been heard from since.

The FBI said Keyes admitted that on April 9, 2009, he abducted a female from a state on the East Coast and transported her over multiple state lines into New York. Keyes said he killed the victim and buried her in upstate New York.

FBI Special Agent Barbara Woodruff told CNN Thursday that Keyes -- before he committed suicide last year -- was shown pictures of unsolved murder victims and people who had gone missing to see whether he would admit to being involved in any of those cases.

When Keyes was shown a picture of Feldman, he paused, looking at it a long time, before saying, "I'm not ready to talk about that one," according to Woodruff.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The FBI says it's highly unlikely confessed Alaska serial killer Israel Keyes was connected to the unsolved disappearance of a man in Washington state.

A special episode of Investigation Discovery's "Dark Minds" TV series airing April 2 says Gilbert Gilman was a potential victim of Keyes, who had been in the region. Gilman disappeared from Olympic National Park in 2006.

Keyes was believed to have killed at least 11 people around the country before committing suicide in his Anchorage jail cell 15 months ago. He was awaiting a federal trial in the 2012 strangulation murder of his last known victim, 18-year-old Samantha Koenig of Anchorage.

Anchorage-based FBI Special Agent Kevin Donovan says Keyes likely was not involved in Gilman's disappearance, based on evidence and reviews of unsolved homicides and missing persons cases.

Yesterday I was part of a protest trying to get this cult "Church of Wells" to leave our community....I met and had a conversation with Israel Keyes mother...she wouldn't talk to me about him there but she did invite me to her house to talk to her....these people are all nut cases....they have kidnapped and brainwashed a young girl Catherine Groves..a couple of other ladies and I tried to talk Catherine into going home one lady even told her she would drive her home to her parents right then and there....she has been so brainwashed she cannot even think or talk altho she did say that "Catherine" was dead and that "Catherine" had been "crucified"....I am thinking seriously about going to talk to Israel's mother Heidi.

littletxlady  Are you sure you want to do that?  The family sounds unbalanced. I wouldn't want to be around them  on any one on one or in a group. But that's me. If you want to talk to her why not ask her for coffee some where quiet but public. Just a thought.

FBI comes up empty on new information on murders by former Neah Bay resident Israel Keyes

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The search for victims of Israel Keyes remains stymied more than a year after the FBI issued a call for new information about the serial killer who told investigators he buried near Port Angeles a still-missing cache of items he could use to murder.

Anchorage, Alaska, FBI Special Agent Jolene Goeden said in a recent interview that more than 150 people had contacted the FBI about the former Neah Bay resident since August 2013, when her office publicly sought information about the case.

But none of the contacts led to substantial, new information on the case, she said.

“It's cold. Absolutely, unfortunately, it's cold at this point.

“We don't have any cases right now that we have any evidence that he is responsible for [a particular] person's disappearance.”

None of Keyes' victims appears to have lived in Clallam or Jefferson counties, Clallam County Undersheriff Ron Peregrin and Jefferson County Sheriff's Detective Brett Anglin have said.

Keyes told agents he weighed down at least one body with anchors and dumped it from a boat into 100 feet of water in Lake Crescent, west of Port Angeles, but a search was never conducted because there was no indication on where in the 12-mile-long lake Keyes claimed to have disposed of the body.

He is linked to the murders of 11 people between 2001 and 2012, five of whom were killed while he lived in Neah Bay from 2001 to 2007.

Before his death, Keyes admitted to killing at least eight people from Vermont to Washington state.

Keyes had told investigators in Alaska that he killed four people in Washington, including a couple in the state, between 2001 and 2005.

He committed suicide in December 2012 at age 34 in an Anchorage jail.

The day before Keyes died was the first time he talked of a hidden cache of items he stashed near Port Angeles that he could use in a murder, Goeden said.

“Our next meeting was going to be potentially him directing us to that cache,” Goeden said.

“We were going to get out our Google maps, get agents on the ground so we could direct them to where it was.”

The FBI does not plan to look for the cache, lacking any information on its location.

The caches found elsewhere include weapons and chemicals to hasten the decomposition of bodies.
