State Department joins search for missing American couple in Peru

Published February 24, 2013

he U.S. State Department is now assisting in the search for an American couple who disappeared in January during a biking trip in Peru.

Jamie Neal and Garrett Hand, both from the San Francisco area, left for Peru in December and were last heard from on Jan. 25, Fox 40 reports.

Neal has stopped posting pictures of the trip on Facebook and Hand no longer answers his cellphone.

“Until someone shows me proof that she’s not missing, I don’t believe it,” Jennifer Neal, one of Jamie’s sisters, told Fox 40.

The couple was last seen on Jan. 26 taking a bus from Cusco to Lima and then getting in a cab, KTVU reports.

The U.S. State Department has made a poster of Neal and Hand, while the U.S. Embassy in Peru's website posted a travel warning for Americans.

Couple Goes Missing in Peru; Made Last Contact in January

Jennifer Neal and her sister Stacy Fingers haven’t been able to sleep much. Not since their sister, Jamie — Stacy’s twin — was last heard from a month ago in Peru.

“She’s my sister. I’m just not gonna listen to anybody until she calls me,” Jennifer said, as a tear rolled down her cheek.

Jamie’s twin’s biggest fear: “That she’s not safe,” Stacy said.

“We’re all three pretty close. We’ve all three really had each other for a long time,” Jennifer  added.

Jamie Neal and her boyfriend Garrett Hand, left in December for an biking adventure there. They were last heard from on Jan. 25.

Jamie’s last communication with Jennifer was on the 25th , in a Facebook post. And countless pictures Jamie has posted along the way have suddenly stopped. Garrett’s cell phone, simply goes to a recording.

Stacy sensed something was up early on.

“Just a worried feeling. Like something was wrong,” she said.

The following emergency message is posted on the U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru website:

Emergency Messages for U.S. Citizens
Security Message for U.S. Citizens – Potential Kidnapping Threat in Cusco

U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru

http://lima.usembassy.gov/warden/emergency_messages.html

February 13, 2013

The U.S. Embassy warns U.S. citizens of a potential kidnapping threat in the Cusco area.  The Embassy has received information that members of a criminal organization may be planning to kidnap U.S. citizen tourists in the Cusco and Machu Picchu area.  Possible targets and methods are not known and the threat is credible at least through the end of February 2013. For the moment, personal travel by U.S. Embassy personnel to the Cusco region, including Machu Picchu, has been prohibited and official travel is severely restricted as a result of this threat.

Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates.  Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.

Thousands of U.S. citizens routinely travel to the Cusco region without undue incident.  The U.S. Embassy remains confident of the Peruvian government’s efforts to ensure the safety of all tourists in the region.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Peru enroll in the Department
of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at https://step.state.gov/step.  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don't have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy.

I have to tell you it takes either a lot of nerve to do a trip like this or no brains.

Two people bicycling thru South America, traveling to Argentina, Chile and Peru. YIKES. I can honestly say I have done some pretty risky things in my past, but a trip like this would have had to have been with a group and something a little more structured than just two people doing it on their own. I traveled with a buddy when I was in my teens and backpacked across Europe (Germany, England, France, Monte Carlo, Italy, Austria, Switzerland), but it was also the early 80's. An entire different world than today.

The all of a sudden no posting of pics on Facebook and a cell phone which is obviously either turned off or dead battery is not a good sign.

Anything is possible when you are dealing with people who know you are alone and by yourself.

By CNN Staff

(CNN) -- An American couple that had gone missing in Peru has been found safe, Peru's Ministry of Tourism and Commerce told CNN Tuesday.
Jamie Neal and Garret Hand, a couple from the San Francisco area, left last November and began chronicling their trip through South America on social media until they went missing last month.
In late January, however, their Internet postings stopped and calls to their cell phones went unanswered.
Jamie Neal's sister Jennifer said the couple's families and friends hadn't been able to get in touch with them since. The man and woman, both 25, had been last reported seen in Lima, the Peruvian capital.

Peru says American couple found; family wants 'proof of life'

(CNN) -- An American couple that went missing on a bike trek through Peru has been spotted "safe and sound," the South American country's top tourism official said Tuesday.

Jamie Neal and Garrett Hand are heading upstream in a small boat on a jungle river, said Jose Luis Silva, Peru's minister of tourism and commerce.

"They're currently in a remote, paradise-like region of the Peruvian Amazon, which is difficult to access," he told CNN.

But even as authorities trumpeted the news, Hand's mother said in a statement that she won't believe it until she hears directly from her son.

"We have not heard from them since January 25, nor have they accessed bank accounts since that time," mother Francine Fitzgerald said. "We have only the worst to consider as to why."

From my update from FP post:

First let me state, I am glad they have been found safe and there was never any incident. That being said, are you serious! They kept in contact while traveling alone throughout South America on their biking trip constantly posting on Facebook, then go silent and out of contact for a month and they don't think anyone is concerned or worried? REALLY? How would one not think that people are concerned that they have not heard from you in a month? This speaks volumes, doesn't it.

From The Daily Mail
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2285010/Jamie-Neal-Garrett-Hand-Couple-safe-aboard-boat-Peru.html

Quote
A California couple thought to be missing for a month during a trip to Peru have been located aboard a boat  - and they didn't even know their families had been looking for them.

Jamie Neal, 25, and Garrett Hand, 27, from California’s Bay Area, left for Peru in December for a South America bike trip, and had not been in contact with friends and relatives since late January.

The couple was found on a boat that was traveling along the Navos River.
