Kira Trevino Missing: Minnesota Woman Failed To Report For Work At Mall Of America

Posted: 02/26/2013 12:36 pm EST  |  Updated: 02/26/2013 4:21 pm EST

Authorities in Minnesota are searching for a woman reported missing Friday when she failed to report to her job as a store manager at the Mall of America.

An "active investigation" is underway for 30-year-old Kira Trevino, Sgt. Paul Paulos, public information officer for the St. Paul Police Department, confirmed to The Huffington Post.

On Monday, investigators discovered Trevino's white Chevy Cobalt under a parking ramp in the car lot of the famous shopping mall, KARE 11 reports. Security personnel are reviewing surveillance footage for any clues regarding Trevino's disappearance.

Trevino works as manager at Delia’s, a clothing store for teenage girls. Her husband, Jeff Trevino, is believed to be the last person to have seen her, the Wausau Daily Herald reports.

Police recover vehicle belonging to missing Mall of America manager

Published February 26, 2013

FoxNews.com

A vehicle belonging to a missing Mall of America store manager was found parked in a nearby lot, her family says.

Kira Trevino, a 30-year-old from St. Paul, Minn., who works at clothing store Delia’s, was reported missing after she failed to show up for work Saturday, Fox 9 News reports.

After a “locate vehicle” message was sent out Sunday, mall security found her unoccupied white Chevy Cobalt in the mall’s West Ramp parking area around 5 a.m. Monday, Cmdr. Vic Poyer of the Bloomington Police Department said.

Trevino’s family told Fox 9 News that her cellphone and purse were found inside the car, which was carefully backed into a space where she usually doesn’t park.

Tara Hall, who also works at Trevino’s store and describes herself as a friend, said the vehicle was in a “very isolated corner,” the Star-Tribune reports.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

The husband of missing St. Paul woman Kira Trevino has been arrested and booked into the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of murder.

St. Paul investigators say enough evidence was found inside the couple's home on the 500 block of Iowa Avenue to suggest a crime was committed there; however, they would not elaborate on what that evidence is.

Officers also said a roommate who lived in the home with the Trevinos is cooperating with the investigation.

Kira Trevino still has not been found, and police say they are still treating her disappearance as a missing person's case at this time. Investigators ask anyone who may have information on her whereabouts is asked to call 651-266-5650.

On Monday, officers with the Bloomington Police Department confirmed that a vehicle belonging to Kira Trevino was found at the Mall of America. Trevino, 30, was reported missing after she failed to show up for work on Saturday at Delia's at the mall.

The discovery of Trevino's car in the West Ramp was made just hours after a "locate vehicle" message had been sent out on Sunday in connection with her disappearance.

St. Paul woman missing; husband held on suspicion of homicide

    Article by: CHAO XIONG , Star Tribune
    Updated: February 26, 2013 - 10:00 PM

Following a seven-hour search of the couple’s home, police say there’s evidence of a crime in Kira and Jeffrey Trevino’s house.
With Kira Trevino still missing after five days, police arrested her husband Tuesday following a seven-hour search of the couple’s home.

“We located enough evidence that a crime had been committed in the house,” said Sgt. Paul Paulos, a police spokesman.

Jeffrey D. Trevino, 39, remained in the Ramsey County jail Tuesday night on suspicion of homicide. Authorities, meanwhile, continued to ask for help in finding his wife, who has been missing since failing to arrive for work Friday at the Mall of America. Police declined to say what exactly pointed suspicion at Jeffrey Trevino.

In their quiet Payne-Phalen neighborhood, Jeffrey and Kira Trevino were known as a young couple who said their polite “Hellos” but kept to themselves other than hosting summertime bonfires.

“I thought they were just a nice, friendly couple,” said their neighbor, Leo Moua. “They don’t bother nobody.”

But Kira Trevino, 30, didn’t show up for work Friday at the Bloomington mall, where she was a manager in a store called Delia’s. Her car was found abandoned in the mall’s parking lot Saturday, her purse and cellphone inside. About 6 p.m. Monday, a barrage of investigators from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension pulled up to the couple’s home in the 500 block of E. Iowa Avenue. Their search lasted until 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Several hours later, Jeffrey Trevino was in the Ramsey County jail. Police stopped short of saying whether they believe Kira is likely dead, instead saying that the case remains a “missing persons” case.

Missing Mall of America worker's family says husband didn't tell them she was missing

    Article by: CHAO XIONG , Star Tribune
    Updated: February 28, 2013 - 5:55 AM

Authorities said Jeffrey Trevino could be charged today in the disappearance of his wife, Kira.

Kira Trevino’s sister and mother say they didn’t learn she was missing until Sunday, two days after her husband first reported her disappearance to St. Paul police.

Jeffrey D. Trevino, who remained jailed Wednesday on suspicion of homicide in connection with his 30-year-old wife’s disappearance, contacted two of her friends Saturday evening, but didn’t inform family members until Sunday.

“Sadly he had not contacted any of her family members to see if she was with us,” said Kira Trevino’s younger sister, Keri Anne Steger. Kira Trevino’s car was found in a remote area of the Mall of America parking lot Saturday after she failed to show up for work at the Delia’s store she managed there. Police later found her purse and cellphone in the car.

On Tuesday, Jeffrey Trevino was arrested after police said a seven-hour search of the couple’s home in the 500 block of E. Iowa Avenue revealed evidence that a crime had been committed there.

Authorities said Trevino, 39, could be charged as soon as Thursday morning.

Police have released few details about the investigation and the evidence that led to Trevino’s arrest, including whether any video surveillance footage from the mall has helped in the case.

The county attorney's office was expected to decide by Thursday morning whether to file charges. If he is not charged, Trevino would be released from jail later in the day.

Trevino called police about 9

a.m. Friday to report his wife, Kira, was missing. He said she hadn't showed up for work that day at Delia's, a Mall of America clothing store, said Sgt. Paul Paulos, St. Paul police spokesman. Her car was found at the mall.
Police searched the couple's home in St. Paul on Monday and Tuesday and found "enough evidence to show that a crime had been committed in the house," said Paulos, who didn't disclose what it was because of the ongoing investigation.

Paulos said the woman is considered a missing person.

Her husband declined an interview request through the jail.

BLOOD OFTEN POINTS TO HOMICIDE

Tad DiBiase, a former federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C., consults with police and prosecutors on "no body" homicides and tallies such trials on his website, www.nobodycases.com. He had counted 378 such cases through mid-December with about an 89 percent conviction rate.

Generally speaking, in the absence of a body, a large amount of blood points to a homicide, DiBiase said.

St. Paul man charged with 2nd degree murder in wife's disappearance

    Article by: JOY POWELL and CHAO XIONG , Staff Writers
    Updated: February 28, 2013 - 2:54 PM

Jeffery D. Trevino was charged this morning with two counts of second-degree murder in the disappearance of his wife, Kira Trevino, who has been missing for seven days.

Evidence of a large amount of blood was found in her home and car, and a video from the Mall of America shows her car pulling into a lot there and a person, whose identity is not clear, throwing away an object in the area where her bloody trunk liner was later recovered, according to the complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court Thursday morning.

“The defendant took a number of actions to be evasive and cover up this murder,” said Ramsey County Attorney John Choi.

Based on the blood in the home and the car, authorities believe Kira Trevino is dead.

Choi said Jeffery Trevino has not been cooperative in helping locate the body, adding that while it is rare, they have enough evidence in the case to pursue murder charges without it.

A Ramsey County District Court judge set bail at $1 million.

St. Paul police searching for Kira Trevino's body are seeking the public's help, asking if anyone saw her husband or car last week, or has information about where she is.

Police have set up a special tip line, Sgt. Paul Paulos, St. Paul police spokesman, said Friday, March 1.

"She's missing," Paulos said. "We need to find her, we need to look for her, we need to end the puzzle. ... This is an extremely violent act, and we need closure."

Jeffery Trevino, the 30-year-old's husband, reported her missing Sunday, saying he last saw her Friday, Feb. 22. Police arrested Trevino, 39, on Tuesday. Prosecutors charged him Thursday with second-degree murder in Kira Trevino's death,  ::snipping2::

Police also are looking for anyone who may have seen Kira Trevino's car, a 2006 white four-door Chevrolet Cobalt with license plate number XCC-572, within 100 miles of the Twin Cities on the night of Feb. 21 or morning of Feb. 22.

Anyone with information can call or text the police tip line at 651-560-3277.

10:06 AM, Mar 9, 2013

ROSEMOUNT, Minn. - Volunteers are gathering Saturday to search for the body of Kira Trevino, the 30-year-old St. Paul woman who has been missing since February 21.

The group, comprised of friends of Trevino and strangers who never met her but want to help, is meeting near Spring Park in Rosemount at 12:00 p.m. to search the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.

Sgt. Paul Paulos with the St. Paul Police Department says there is no specific evidence to indicate Trevino's body may be in that area, but he says police always appreciate "an extra set of eyes" in situations like this.

Paulos says St. Paul Police will meet with the group prior to the search and remind them of basic safety precautions they should take while searching the area, such as not disturbing a scene if they find something suspicious.

Kira Trevino told her mother about two weeks before she was killed that she was thinking of moving out and was unsure about her relationship with her husband, according to a search warrant affidavit filed this week.

The information is among new details about the Trevino case included in five search warrant affidavits filed Tuesday, March 5, in Ramsey County District Court.
 ::snipping2::
On Feb. 21, Kira Trevino was working at the Mall of America, where she was a co-manager at Delia's clothing store. Jeffery Trevino said he went to the mall that afternoon and had coffee with his wife about
2 p.m. Later in the evening, they had dinner at Crave restaurant and then went to the Sky Deck Sports Grille & Lanes at the mall.
They returned to their Payne-Phalen home and watched a movie, Jeffery Trevino said. He said he walked Kira Trevino to her car at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 22 as she left to run errands.

When police searched the Trevino home in the 500 block of East Iowa Avenue, they found "copious amounts" of blood, including a large bloodstain in the shape of a human head and torso, according to the criminal complaint. There also was evidence that someone had tried to perform extensive cleanup.

The car's driver was also seen getting into a taxi, which traveled to the 600 block of East Iowa Avenue, less than a block from the couple's home, the complaint said.
 ::snipping2::
"Surveillance video recovered from this area showed a male wearing jeans, white tennis shoes and a black sweatshirt, with a distinct circle-type emblem or marking on the front" who was "walking from the area where the cab dropped him off to the driveway" of the Trevino's home, and then walking toward the garage, an affidavit said.
 ::snipping2::
That warrant was to search the home for a black hooded sweatshirt and white tennis shoes, along with hairbrushes, toothbrushes and clothing to get a possible DNA profile of Kira Trevino. A black hooded sweatshirt was found in the dining room, as were white tennis shoes in the master bedroom closet, the inventory receipt said.

just a note on military time
0100hrs = 1am
noon =1200hrs
midnite= 2400hrs

Wells Fargo Bank records show a debit card transaction on K.K.T’s card at 0213 hours on February 22 from the gas station at the corner of Larpenteur Avenue and the entrances to I35E, near the defendant’s home. This was the last time that her credit card was used. Surveillance video showed the white Cobalt as it arrived at the gas pumps at 0207 hours. The image is not clear enough to establish identity, but a male in gray pants and a gray hooded sweatshirt filled the car with gas and got back into the car. The car exited and went west toward the entrances to I35E, instead of east on Larpenteur, which is the most direct route to the defendant’s home

IMO this is why the LE feel they have a murderer in custody

On Monday, February 25, 2013, Investigators executed a search warrant at 570 E. Iowa, St. Paul. Investigators observed several freshly washed towels in a basket in front of the clothes dryer. The Arkansas Razorback sweatshirt, which the defendant said he was wearing on February 21, was hanging, freshly washed and air dried near the washer and dryer. Police saw two bleach-stained towels on the kitchen counter near a bottle of bleach spray cleaner. A mop and bucket were in the hallway outside of the main floor bathroom. Close inspection revealed blood spatter in the master bedroom, where the defendant said he and K.K.T. slept on Thursday night and Friday morning. Testing established that the blood was human blood. Forensic examiners found blood on the floor, box spring mattress, bed frame, book shelf, closet door, baseboard trim and west wall. Forensic scientists found evidence of extensive cleanup efforts, with furniture moved to hide evidence. Chemical testing revealed copious amounts of blood evidence inside the bedroom on multiple surfaces, on the kitchen floor and the main floor hallway outside of the bedroom. The BCA crime lab cut out a large section of the carpet in the master bedroom to examine the underside of the carpet. This examination revealed a large stain in the shape of a human head and torso. The stain tested positive for blood. This stain is situated near the west wall and the corner of the bed where blood spatter evidence was recovered. The wooden frame of the box spring in this area proved to be broken. Further chemical testing revealed additional large amounts of blood evidence in the main floor living room, hallway and bathroom as well as the landing at the top of the basement stairs, on the basement stairs, the basement floor and floor in the front of the washing machine in the laundry area. Investigators also found a carpet cleaner in the home. Examination revealed blood evidence on the wheels; and in the area where the brushes rotate, scientists found a substance consistent with clotted blood or human tissue.

Based on training and experience, a forensic scientist with the BCA opined that the blood spatter evidence is consistent with more than one forceful blow to the victim. The victim had to be bleeding prior to a subsequent blow which caused the pre-existing blood to spatter.

Prosecutors say Trevino was ready to flee country

2:36 PM, Mar 14, 2013   |

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Prosecutors say the St. Paul man accused of killing his wife was prepared to flee the country.

During a court appearance Thursday prosecutors said Jeffery Trevino made phone calls to family while in the Ramsey County Jail, telling them that his passport was located in a suitcase under his bed.

Trevino is being held in the Ramsey County Jail on charges of second degree murder for the death of his 30-year-old wife, Kira Trevino. Jeffery reported his wife missing on February 24, and investigators later found "copious amount of blood" in their St. Paul home.

It was also revealed in court on Thursday that, according to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the blood found in the home belongs to Kira.

Prosecutors charged Trevino with Kira's murder even though police have yet to find her body. Investigators say there was enough evidence in their home to conclude a death occured.

In search for Kira Trevino, family friend to continue efforts at Maplewood lake
Posted April 1, 2013, Updated April 2, 2013

A family friend of Kira Trevino's plans to continue his own search of Keller Lake on Tuesday, April 2, for the 30-year-old woman's body.

Mike Teige spearheaded efforts Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the ice-covered Maplewood lake, with volunteers using augers to drill holes in the ice and underwater cameras to search. He was back at his Elderon, Wis., home Monday and said he'd return to Keller Lake on Tuesday.

Trevino, of St. Paul, was last seen publicly Feb. 21. Her body hasn't been found, but her husband, Jeffery Trevino, was charged Feb. 28 with two counts of second-degree murder in his wife's death. A judge entered a not-guilty plea for the 39-year-old man Friday.

Teige said he has a crew of volunteers to help him
 ::snipping2::
Teige estimates he'll begin his work at Keller Lake about noon or 1 p.m. Tuesday. He said people with equipment who want to help can contact him at 715-551-5608.

"That's the spot," Teige said of his belief that Kira Trevino's body is there. "I'm not going to waver from Keller Lake."

Teige said he and his volunteers drilled 1,200 to 1,500 holes in the lake, and he'll focus on the southern part of the lake Tuesday. "We want to drill 3,000 more holes," he said.

Law enforcement has

conducted searches at Keller Lake with divers and cadaver dogs, with the dogs most recently used Wednesday. The dogs have shown interest in areas of the lake, indicating possible human remains.

Teige said a cadaver dog out Monday, but not with law enforcement, also showed interest in an area that Teige said he's focusing on.

Volunteer searchers found a pillow with blood matching Trevino's DNA near the lake.

A woman also reported to police that she saw two men on frozen Keller Lake early Feb. 22. She said they were carrying something that appeared to be the size of a human, according to the criminal complaint against Jeffery Trevino.

Kira Trevino missing: Police seek access to husband's Facebook account
April 3, 2013

A friend of Jeffery Trevino told police that Trevino had recently included the initials NWNP on Facebook posts, and that they may mean "No Witnesses No Proof," a search warrant affidavit said.

The affidavit, made public Wednesday, April 3, was in support of a search warrant to obtain records from Facebook, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif.

Jeffery Trevino, 39, is being held in the Ramsey County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail, facing charges that he murdered his wife, 30-year-old Kira Steger Trevino. Her body has not been found, but she is presumed dead.

Investigators obtained a similar warrant for access to the Facebook accounts of Kira Steger Trevino and Matthew Roff. Roff lived with the couple at their home in the 500 block of East Iowa Avenue.

John Conard, Trevino's attorney, said he had not seen the search warrants.

"We're continuing to evaluate evidence as the prosecution continues to disclose it," he said. He declined further comment.

Internet searches of the acronym NWNP turn up "No War No Peace," "No Way Nuclear Pacifists" and "Neverwinter Nights Podcast." Neverwinter Nights is a series of role-playing games.

Police believe the Facebook communication of Jeffery Trevino that they're seeking would have happened before he was in custody, said Howie Padilla, police spokesman. He was arrested Feb. 26.
 ::snipping2::
According to an amended criminal complaint in the case, filed March 22, a woman told police she saw two men on Keller Lake in Maplewood early Feb. 22. She said they were carrying "something that ... appeared the size of a person but wrapped in something."

Upon learning of the tip, the missing woman's family organized a search of the area; searchers found a plastic bag containing a bloody pillow and other items. The blood matched the woman's DNA, prosecutors said.

Police went to the lake with cadaver dogs and divers. According to the amended complaint, the dogs "reacted positively to a hole cut in the ice."

"This may indicate a dead human body in the lake," the complaint said. Divers found no signs of the woman.

Regarding other items found in searches, police will look into them to determine whether they are connected to the investigation, Padilla said. "We're not going to elaborate where in the process those tests may be or the result of them at this point," he said.

The lake is nearly two miles from the Trevino home in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood of St. Paul.

Kira Trevino missing: Search wraps up at Keller Lake; more searches to follow
April 6, 2013

About 40 people gathered Saturday, April 6, to comb the chain of lakes around Keller Lake in Maplewood for signs of Kira Trevino, the St. Paul woman who has been missing since February.

The search began about 10 a.m. at Gervais Lake. Volunteers searched Kohlman Lake as well and walked through ditches, ravines, swamps and under bridges toward the dam that leads into Round Lake.

The melting snow has helped move the search along, said Jodie Leko, a search organizer.
 ::snipping2::

Leko said additional searches will be planned for other areas and as they continue, more volunteers are needed.

A search is planned at 10 a.m. Sunday at Round Lake in Maplewood and will continue at noon at Lake Phalen in St. Paul. More information, including locations to park and meet, is at facebook.com/HelpFindKiraStegerTrevino.

Body of Kira Trevino Found Battered, Nude

Kira Trevino, whose body was found this week in the Mississippi River, suffered a head wound, broken bones, facial bruising and cuts to her liver, according to an initial autopsy.

Those details were released Friday in Ramsey County District Court documents, requesting an extension for a pretrial in a murder case against Trevino's husband, Jeffrey Trevino.

On Thursday, police confirmed that a body found this week in the Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul was the remains of 30-year-old Kira Trevino, who has been missing since Feb. 21. Trevino has been presumed dead for months, according to police.

An initial autopsy of her body revealed that she had a broken finger, bruising inside her upper lip and cuts to her liver, according to court documents. More examination will be needed to determine if the injuries were caused before or after her death.

Trevino also had partially digested food in her stomach, which may lead to a more precise time of death, according to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.

Her body was found unclothed and without any jewelry, which likely was an attempt by her husband to conceal her identity, according to state prosecutors.

Jury finds Trevino guilty of murder

    Article by: CHAO XIONG , Star Tribune
    Updated: October 3, 2013 - 1:29 PM

‘Our family will never be the same,’ dad says after wrenching trial

Jeffery Trevino was convicted Wednesday of killing his wife, ending the anxious waiting for friends and family of Kira Steger, who was missing for more than two months before her body was found in the Mississippi River.

“I believe Kira would be very happy that he was found guilty,” her mother, Marcie Steger, said outside the Ramsey County Courthouse. “Unfortunately she’s not here. At least he’s not walking around. He was found accountable.”

After she disappeared in February, hundreds of volunteers scoured woods and lakes in an unusually bitter winter searching for Steger, whose disappearance quickly became a public cause and rallying point against domestic violence. She was among the first of several Minnesota women killed in domestic violence incidents this year, some in eerily similar circumstances. Finally, her body turned up in May near a barge in the Mississippi River.

On Wednesday, more than two dozen of Steger’s family members and friends sat in court as the jury of four women and eight men filed in and delivered the verdict after eight days of testimony and 17 hours of deliberation. Her father, Jay Steger, dabbed at his eyes with a tissue and glanced sympathetically at Trevino’s parents. Trevino’s family sat across the aisle, his sister crying loudly on their mother’s shoulder.

Jurors heard testimony that the couple were on the verge of divorce and viewed several photos of bloodstains in their master bedroom before determining that Trevino was guilty of second degree murder without intent. He was acquitted of one count of second degree murder with intent, meaning jurors believe he didn’t mean to kill her.

Jay Steger said his heart sank when the acquittal was read first, but said that the family is glad there was a conviction on the second count, which carries a maximum of 40 years in prison, as did the count on which Trevino was acquitted.

Trevino’s sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 25. District Judge Leonardo Castro will also issue his decision on whether there were aggravating factors in the case that merit an upward departure for Trevino’s sentence.

“The amount of time he’s looking at isn’t enough,” Jay Steger said. “I don’t care if he got a hundred years. It still wouldn’t have been enough.”

Steger, 30, was last seen alive in public on Feb. 21 while on a date night with Trevino, 39, at the Mall of America, where she worked as co-manager of the clothing retailer Delia’s. He reported her missing to police on Feb. 24, her father’s birthday. Her body was recovered from the Mississippi River on May 8, a cut to the bone over her left eyebrow, her left index finger snapped above the knuckle, a tear above her lip and abrasions on the inside of her mouth that indicate she was likely smothered and possibly punched.

Assistant Ramsey County attorneys Richard Dusterhoft and Andrew Johnson told jurors that Trevino killed Steger in a jealous rage because she was having an affair with a co-worker and wanted a divorce. Trevino’s attorney, John Conard, said there were too many holes in the prosecution’s forensic evidence and that someone else killed Steger and stole her iPhone, which was activated on March 22 and sold online to a buyer in Indonesia.

Prosecutors said Trevino killed Steger after he got fed up with her texting the co-worker throughout their date night. Her last text to the man was at 11:44 p.m. telling him that the Minnesota Wild won their game. Prosecutors believe Trevino killed her in their master bedroom within two hours of that text message, put her in the trunk of her car, fueled the car at a gas station on Larpenteur Avenue about 2:10 a.m. on Feb. 22, and dumped her in the river.

Steger’s family waited months to find her, and even longer to lay her to rest. Steger’s body will finally be released to her family now that the trial is over.

Jeffrey Trevino claims he didn't cause enough damage to kill Kira Steger
Friday, October 18, 2013 9:29 a.m. CDT

ST. PAUL, MN (WTAQ) - The Minnesota man convicted of killing Wausau area native Kira Steger now claims he didn't cause enough of her injuries to kill her.

A defense lawyer has asked a judge to throw out Jeffrey Trevino's guilty verdict for unintentional second-degree murder.

John Conard said there was insufficient legal basis for the jury's verdict on October 2nd.

Jurors said they could tie the 39-year-old Trevino to the killing of his 30-year-old wife Steger in February, but they could not find proof that Trevino planned the murder. Conard said there was no proof that Steger died from a serious cut above her left eyebrow.

She also suffered a broken finger, but Conard said the injury only rises to the level of third-degree assault -- not murder.

The defense lawyer mentioned nothing about testimony during the trial that Trevino likely smothered Steger.
