Texas college stabbing: 14 injured, 2 in critical condition
April 9, 2013

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia told reporters that 14 people were injured in the attack and two of them were in critical condition.
The suspect, an approximately 21-year-old male enrolled at the school, is in custody while authorities continue their investigation, Garcia said.
It was unclear what his motive was, or what weapon he used, Garcia said.
"We do not know exactly what type of weapon was used other than to say that it is at this point an unknown instrument," he said. "We don't know whether a knife or some other type of instrument."

Most of the victims had lacerations in their head and neck areas, said Robert Rasa, a spokesman for the CyFair Volunteer Fire Department.
"We were literally going from building to building, room to room, looking for patients, setting up triage," he said.
The school was on lockdown Tuesday afternoon while authorities combed the campus to ensure no other injured people or attackers were there, Harris County sheriff's spokesman Alan Bernstein said.
While authorities investigated, teachers and students huddled together in locked rooms, said Marianna Sviland, a teacher at the college who was in a faculty workroom at the time of the stabbing.
"Outside the window, I saw cops running around, I saw students running and I realized something was going on," she said. "It was scary."
By 2 p.m. (3 p.m. ET), students and staff were allowed to leave campus, Sviland said.
Details about the victim's injuries were unclear Tuesday afternoon.

Lone Star Stabbing: Suspect Arrested After Texas Community College Attack (LIVE UPDATES)
April 9, 2013

CYPRESS, Texas -- A student went on a building-to-building stabbing attack at a Texas community college Tuesday, wounding at least 14 people before being subdued and arrested, authorities said.

The attack about 11:20 a.m. on the Lone Star Community College System's campus in Cypress sent at least 12 people to area hospitals, including four taken by helicopter, according to Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department spokesman Robert Rasa. He said several people refused treatment at the scene.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said officers responded to the campus after receiving a call about a male "on the loose" stabbing people. He said it was not immediately clear what type of weapon was used.

Witness: Lone Star College stabbing suspect 'had sinister look on his face'
April 9, 2013

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas—  Twelve people were rushed to area hospitals after an attack on the campus of Lone Star College Cy-Fair in northwest Harris County. Two other people were treated for minor wounds at the scene in the 9900 block of Barker Cypress.
Witnesses said a suspect ran down a hallway randomly stabbing students in the Health and Science Center.
"Male on the loose, stabbing people," was the call the sheriff's department received at 11:12 a.m. Tuesday.
Other students in the science building rushed to help the victims until emergency crews arrived. One victim was "bleeding profusely."
"A female student who had got punctured right in her neck. And they had her on the stretcher and were trying to stop the bleeding," said a witness.
"They had a girl and she still had a blade sticking out of her cheek," said Michael Chalfan, another witness. "It was a box cutter to be exact, it was an X-acto knife."

A male suspect was tackled on the campus and taken into custody.
He has been identified as 20-year-old Dylan Quick.
"Students and faculty were actively responding to subdue this individual," said Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia. "So we're proud of those folks."
Chalfan said Quick was running toward him when he was taken down.
"He had a sinister look on his face, kind of like a smile and a satisfaction grin after doing it," Chalfan said.
A former student said he was in the same holding room with Quick after he was arrested for trespassing. He said he asked Quick what he was doing and the suspect replied, "I was going on a killing spree until my blade broke."
Quick is a student at Lone Star College Cy-Fair. At last check, he had not been charged.

Suspected stabber familiar with Lone Star campus
April 9, 2013

Dylan Quick, 20, who is suspected of stabbing 15 people Tuesday at Lone Star College-Cy Fair, became familiar with the school nearly a decade ago when he began attending book clubs and other teen activities on campus.

His story was told last week on Lone Star-Cy Fair blog created by and for teens transitioning from high school to college.

The student spotlight published on April 1 describes how Quick began coming to the Harris County Public Library's on-campus branch at age 12 for activities that helped him transform from a withdrawn young man to an outgoing college student.

"Initially reluctant to participate, Dylan was homeschooled and very shy," the post said, adding that his mother, Tiffany, wanted him in a setting "to socialize with other teens and also to be intellectually stimulated."

Interaction was especially important for the youngster who was born deaf and received a cochlear implant at age 7. The device allowed him to learn English, the profile said. Tiffany Quick removed her son from public school when he "stagnated" in a classroom for students with special needs.

Quick attended two book clubs: Classics for Home Schooled Teens and Contemporary Books for Everyone.

After rarely speaking during his first two years in the library's teen activities, "Dylan became loquacious, sharing his analyses of literature and socializing with his book club comrades," the post said, adding that his involvement increased his hearing and communication skills.

Dylan Quick became the first author of the branch's long-running blog, "Teen Thoughts: A Blog for Teens," where he posted items in 2009 under the moniker "Rockstar."

He planned to finish his associate's degree, transfer to the University of Houston, then pursue a career in accounting.

A law enforcement source identified Quick as the suspect in the stabbing. The slender young man with a curly red afro and goatee was apprehended on campus by authorities shortly after the incident.

Dylan Andrew Quick was born May 26, 1992 and attended Cypress Fairbanks ISD until April 2004 -at age 11 - when he withdrew from Birkes Elementary, the school district confirmed.

Neighbors on Tuesday described Quick as a loner - usually in the company of his protective parents - who was often seen doing yard work at their home about six miles from the Lone Star-Cy Fair campus.

Suspect used razor-like knife in Texas college stabbings
April 9, 2013

(CNN) -- [Breaking news update at 10:35 p.m. Tuesday]
Dylan Quick, the 20-year-old suspect in stabbings Tuesday at Lone Star College, told investigators after his arrest that "he has had fantasies of stabbing people to death since he was in elementary school," the Harris County, Texas, Sheriff's Office said. He added that he'd been planning Tuesday's attack "for some time," according to the sheriff's office.

The suspect in an attack Tuesday at a Lone Star College campus in Cypress, Texas, used "a razor-type knife" while stabbing the victims, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said. Pieces of a blade were found in at least one victim, and the handle of such a knife was in the backpack of the suspect -- Dylan Quick -- when he was arrested, according to the sheriff's office.

Prosecutor: Lone Star stabbing suspect used 'X-Acto' knife and scalpel
April 10, 2013

A 20-year-old man has admitted to prosecutors that a fantasy to kill led him to use an X-Acto knife and scalpel in a mass stabbing at a Lone Star College campus Tuesday.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia on Wednesday said Dylan Andrew Quick told investigators he had been fantasizing about stabbing people since he was 8 years old and that he had been planning the attack for awhile.

Garcia said the victims seemed to be chosen at random. A judge ordered on Wednesday that Quick will be held without bail. He will also have to undergo psychiatric tests.
 ::snipping2::
Quick is charged with three counts of aggravated assault after the attacks that left 14 people injured about 11 a.m. on the college's Cy-Fair campus at 9191 Barker Cypress, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Of the 12 victims that were taken to hospitals after the attack, 10 have been released from the hospital and the two remaining are in good condition, according to a statement from Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

The campus reopened Wednesday morning for normal operations after officials canceled classes and other activities following the attacks.

In a matter of minutes, Quick allegedly slashed the victims near the Health Sciences building, spanning the first and second floors of the campus building. Ryan Ballard and other students chased him outside the building and helped subdue him before police arrived and arrested him.

Garcia said video surveillance taken of the incident aided in their investigation.

Audre Levy, president of Lone State College Cy-Fair, said campus police received the call at 11:13 a.m. about the attack and apprehended Quick by 11:17 a.m. Alan Bernstein, a sheriff's office spokesman, said sometime before that the students held Quick down waiting for police to arrive.

A campus alert was issued at 11:30 a.m. because officials believed there was a second attacker.

Quick was ordered to be evaluated by mental health officials. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday. Court records Wednesday did not show any attorney for Quick.

Levy said there were no signs that Quick was a problem student. He had worked in the campus library and many there had kind things to say about him and were shocked by what he is accused of doing, she said.

Officials said 12 victims were rushed to hospitals while two people declined treatment. The most seriously wounded had stab wounds to the neck and face. Six of the victims were taken to the Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute.

Lone Star College stabbing suspect once focus of Texas Equusearch missing persons case
April 10, 2013

 ::snipping2::
Dylan Quick was the center of an earlier incident also involving Lone Star College.

According to Texas Equusearch records we obtained, Quick's mother contacted the search and rescue organization to report her son was missing in January 2011. In response to the call for help, a missing person flier was created to find a then 18-year-old Quick.

His mother says she was concerned after getting a text message in which Quick said he was "depressed and wants to commit suicide."

According to these Equusearch Records, the text message read, "If I continue to live at your house, I would probably commit suicide."

That same day he quit his job at a store in Memorial City Mall. Witnesses who later saw him walking, reported he had a strange look on his face. Equusearch dropped the case after Quick later texted his mother saying he was OK.

But here's where the story get's weird.

Quick was found the next day at Lone Star College's Cypress campus. He'd been sleeping inside a building until security kicked him out. But according to the records, a security officer then gave him food, clothing and a tent so Quick could sleep outside on the campus grounds.

Once he was found, Quick's mother told Equusearch that her son had a psychological breakdown and she was trying to find him some mental help.

Public institutions can't ask students about mental, criminal histories
April 10, 2013

 ::snipping2::
"In Texas it is clear. There is no duty to investigate. No duty to discover. And if you do, there is no duty to inform,” said KHOU 11 News legal analyst Gerald Treece.
That means legally, state colleges and universities, like Lone Star College, cannot ask questions about potential students’ medical or criminal histories.
"I think that it is the risk and the challenge of living in a free community," said Dr. George Santos, a psychiatrist and board member of the Harris Health System.
Dr. Santos says medical information is completely protected and cannot be disclosed.
Texas law differs from many other states.
Mental health professionals have no duty to notify anyone of trouble, unless it is an imminent threat.
“Then I could contact law enforcement and initiate a process for that patient to be evaluated,” said Dr. Santos.
The patient could even be committed, but that is completely up to the therapist.
"There is no real accurate way of determining future threat,” said Dr. Santos. “Even the vast amount of patients with psychosis like schizophrenia have no history of violence."
The biggest challenge is without rights of privacy, patients who really need help may not seek treatment.
