Accidental outlaw Willie Nelson celebrates 80th

Willie Nelson performs during Keith Urban's Fourth annual We're All For The Hall benefit concert at Bridgestone Arena on April 16, 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — America loves its outlaws, and few are as admired and lionized as Willie Nelson.
As the enduring American icon's 80th birthday has approached, he's been honored with lifetime achievement awards, serenaded at special performances and saluted by musicians from every genre of music. And Nelson has taken it all in with a bemused smile.

"It's a nice thing to do for someone on their birthday and I appreciate it," Nelson said in a recent interview aboard his bus. "Usually I like to forget my birthdays as much as possible."

The hubbub is as much about celebrating Nelson as it has been celebrating with Nelson.

The singer whose birthday is Monday or Tuesday — Nelson says April 29, the state of Texas claims April 30 — occupies a unique space in America's cultural memory. A walking bag of contradictions, he wears his hair long in braids and has a penchant for pot smoking, yet remains arguably conservative country music's greatest songwriter. He's accepted by left and right, black and white and is instantly recognizable to a majority of Americans.

Like few other music stars, his image has grown to represent more than the notes he's played or the lyrics he's written. Like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash or Frank Sinatra, he's become a figurehead for a uniquely American way of thinking. He represents the outlaw and the maverick. If Elvis was all about the pelvis and the sexual revolution, Nelson is American independence: the raised middle finger tossed with a twinkle in the eye.

"America is a bizarre place and Willie is our captain," said Jamey Johnson, Nelson's good friend and sometimes opener. "Willie in every way represents all the greatest things about America to me."

Nelson didn't set out to be a folk hero, as Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum calls him. He spends something like 200 days on the road still, a pace that challenges men a quarter his age.

In a series of interviews over the last year, Nelson explained he just came to Nashville wanting someone to buy his songs. That young man never imagined he'd be on the road for more than 50 years. His first real songwriting job paid $50 a week. He played — and sometimes slept — at Tootsie's on Lower Broadway in Nashville, just a few miles — but really a million miles — away from Music Row.

Nelson thinks that young man wouldn't know what to make of the spectacle he's become.

"He'd probably wonder what's that old man doing out there," Nelson said with a chuckle. "He's got a house. He's not homeless. Why don't he go home?"

That’ll probably be our family get-together on that day.”

Country music legend Willie Nelson has been named an honorary doctor - of music.
The 80-year-old Texan was honored Saturday by the Berklee College of Music in Boston, along with musicians Carole King and Annie Lennox.
"I was going to ask them if I could write my own medication," Nelson told the Boston Globe before the ceremony. "Probably not, but it doesn't hurt to ask."
 ::snipping3::
The new "doctor" seemed to revel in his title, tweeting a picture of himself sporting his trademark long braids and wearing graduation regalia.
"Dr Willie looks great," he wrote.
Lennox, best known as one half of the Eurythmics duo, delivered the commencement speech to more than 1,050 graduating students and their guests at Agganis Arena, one night after she and Nelson took to the stage separately to perform with students at the school's commencement concert.
Berklee has previously bestowed the honor on some of the most influential names in music, including Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin and David Bowie, according to the school's website.

WEST, Texas -- Town leaders from West, Texas, and neighboring Abbott were all smiles on Monday afternoon as a representative for country music star Willie Nelson gave donated checks totaling more than $120,000.

Most of the money was raised at a benefit birthday concert Nelson hosted a few weeks ago in Austin.

More than $80,000 was donated to the West Volunteer Fire Department.

Abbott got more than $40,000, some of which will be used to help buy a new truck they lost in the explosion of the April 17 fertilizer plant fire. Abbott is known as the birthplace of Willie Nelson.

West Volunteer Fire Chief George Nors Sr. was also on hand after finally being released from the hospital.
 ::snipping3::
According to a News 8 tally of different relief funds set up after the explosion, more than $3.5 million has been raised.

“We are honored that upstate New York has embraced Farm Aid in this way,” Carolyn Mugar, executive director of Farm Aid, says in a press release. “Your enthusiasm is a clear sign that people here and across the Northeast value family farmers and the work they do to grow strong and healthy communities for all of us.”

They will be joined by an all-star lineup that includes Jack Johnson, Amos Lee, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Lukas Nelson & P.O.T.R., Bahamas, JD & The Straight Shot, Carlene Carter and Pegi Young & the Survivors. Steve Fromholz at Willie Nelson Picnic.

Steven Fromholz, one of Austin's foremost songwriters during the 1970s outlaw country era, died Sunday from an accident with a firearm, his family reported. He was 68.
 ::snipping3::
Born in Temple, Fromholz rose to prominence with a 1976 solo album for ABC Records titled "A Rumor in My Own Time." One of its tracks, "I'd Have to Be Crazy," subsequently was recorded by Willie Nelson, who issued the 1978 Fromholz album "Jus' Playin' Along" on his Lone Star label.
Fromholz later released several albums on his own label, Felicity, named after one of his two daughters. His other daughter, Darcie, also lives in Austin.
Fromholz's career got a boost in 1998 when Lyle Lovett recorded all three songs of Fromholz's "Texas Trilogy" on his two-disc set "Step Inside This House," a tribute to Texas songwriters. The Trilogy initially appeared on Fromholz's first record, "Frummox," a 1969 duo project with Dan McCrimmon. It also inspired a book that Hillis and Bruce Jordan co-authored, "Texas Trilogy: Life in a Small Texas Town" (2002, University of Texas Press).
Fromholz suffered a stroke about 10 years ago but had largely recovered over the years, Hillis said. In 2007, Fromholz was selected Poet Laureate of Texas.

I'd Have To Be Crazy Lyrics

"I'd Have To Be Crazy" was written by Steven Fromholz.

I'd have to be crazy
To stop all my singing
And never play music again

You'd call me a fool
If I grabbed up a top hat
And ran out to flag down the wind

And I'd have to be weird
To grow me a beard
Just to see what the rednecks would do

But I'd have to be crazy
Plumb out of my mind
To fall out of love with you

Now I know I've done weird things
I told people I heard things
When silence was all that abounds

Been days when it pleased me
To be on my knees
Following ants, as they crawled across the ground

I've been insane on a train
But I'm still me again
The place where I hold you is true

So I know I'm alright
'Cause I'd have to be crazy
To fall out of love with you

No I don't wanna intend to
But should there come a day
When I say that I don't love you
You probably waited

I sure would be dingy
To live in an envelope
Waiting alone for a stamp

You'd swear I was loco
If I rubbed for a genie
While burning my hand on the lamp

And I may not be normal
But nobody is
So I'd like to say 'fore I'm through

I'd have to be crazy
Plumb out of my mind
To fall out of love with you

I'd have to be crazy
Plumb out of my mind
To fall out of love with you

I enjoy music, whether it's country, bluegrass, metal, folk,  rock & roll, blues, etc.  and whatever crosses over and in between.  I particularly like singer-song writers.  I agree with you Nutt, Willie's voice is distinct. I used to see him perform live in smaller clubs and outdoor venues when we were all much younger.  Now days, it's too much of a crowd, and it's a long wait and he doesn't come on till late and then he only plays for a little while.  But ahhh, the memories....  ::monkeywine2::

Willie Nelson about to become fifth degree black belt

Nelson is due to receive his fifth degree black belt in the art of Gong Kwon Yu Sul, a modern Korean martial arts system, on April 28 at a martial arts studio in Austin, according to his publicist, Elaine Shock.

The following day, the troubadour will turn 81, which should make us all feel incredibly lazy.

Shock said that for the past 20 years Nelson has been training in the art of Tae Kwon Do and Gong Kwon Yu Sul, often practicing while in his bus on his seemingly never-ending tour with his family of musicians.

His teacher at Master Martial Arts, the Korean-born Grand Master Sam Um, also directed Nelson in the 2007 film Fighting With Anger.

Nelson did all his own stunts the movie too, Um adds.

Um said Nelson first came to his studio 20 years ago with his wife and kids to sign them up for classes. He said Nelson stuck with the classes after his family got older and moved to Hawaii. They struck up a friendship over martial arts that has stayed strong.

“The man has great discipline,” said Um on Wednesday. “He shows up on time and he’s always ready to train.”

At Nelson’s age — he was in his sixties when he came to Um — his teacher worried he would get hurt on the studio’s wooden floors. Um said Nelson more than holds his own practicing the mixed martial art, which features elements of kickboxing and Judo.

Willie Nelson received his fifth-degree black belt in a martial art called GongKwon Yusul, a discipline with Korean roots which Nelson says he’s practiced for 20 years.
“It's just good for you physically. For your lungs. The more you're breathing, exercising, the better you’re going to feel,” said Nelson from his tour bus in an exclusive interview with KVUE Monday night.
Willie Nelson was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame this past weekend.
Monday he received his fifth-degree black belt and on Tuesday, the father of eight celebrates his 81st birthday in a concert at The Backyard.
Nelson also has a new CD called “Band of Brothers” which comes out in June.

Willie Nelson’s old tour bus for sale on Craigslist
May 2, 2014

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man in Tyler is trying to sell the bus Willie Nelson used to tour in the 80s… on Craigslist.

The post on the listing website said “this bus was built for Willie nelson in the 80s,” and features plenty of pictures that display the spray-painted artwork on the 1983 Eagle Bus including a soaring eagle and a man riding a horse in a desert. The front of the bus displays a sign that reads “I love Willie.”

The wooden, velvety interior looks in good condition and comes complete with stain glass windows and Native American artwork. The bus is going for $29,999 although the owner does not say why he is trying to get rid of this old school relic.

Nelson donating awards, archives to UT Center
May 8, 2014

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Country star, actor and farm advocate Willie Nelson has donated many of his platinum records, manuscripts and creative documents to the University of Texas.

UT’s Dolph Briscoe Center for American History on Thursday announced Nelson’s gift. The Willie Nelson Collection in Austin will be the focus of an upcoming exhibit.

UT officials say the collection includes letters and photos from fellow musicians including Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard and Lionel Richie. The items also pay tribute to Nelson’s fans and their gifts and notes to him over the years.

Grammy-winning Nelson, who turned 81 last month, co-founded the Farm Aid movement to help family farmers. He’s also appeared in more than three dozen films and television shows.

Willie Nelson Makes Special Little Girl’s Dream Come True

Willie Nelson spent his weekend fulfilling one little girl’s big dreams.
On Friday night (July 11), Nelson took the stage at the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, joined by Jason Isbell and co-headliner Allison Krauss and Union Station. And it was there that the singer met adorable audience member named Tatum Lee.
Tatum made the 2-and-a-half-hour drive from Joplin, Missouri to Kansas City with her family. It was all thanks to the loving volunteers with the Make a Wish Foundation, who arranged for Tatum to meet her favorite singer, Nelson. But they didn’t just meet — she was also lucky enough to get her guitar signed and a photo with the legend.
The little girl relies on music a great deal, especially every four months when she has operations to extend the rods in her back. Her next surgery is rapidly approaching, but now she’ll have memories of seeing her favorite singer, Willie Nelson, to help get her through. More pictures from the meeting are on Nelson’s official website.

Willie Nelson’s Braids Up for Grabs in Waylon Jennings Auction
August 8, 2014

Ever wanted to own Willie Nelson‘s braids? Now is your chance.
A collection of items from Waylon Jennings‘ personal inventory will be on the auction block this Fall, including Nelson’s hair. More than 2,000 items are being sold off Oct. 5 at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
Most of the items come from Jennings’ close music business friends, including Buddy Holly. The icon’s Ariel Cyclone motorcycle is one of the biggest items being auctioned. The bike was given to Jennings after Holly was killed in a plane crash. Jennings’ relationship with the late star stemmed from the two playing together early in his career — the singer was a member of Holly’s band, the Crickets.
Other hot items include a robe and boxing gloves from the great Muhammad Ali, Hank Williams’ Nudie cowboy boots and a handwritten letter from John Lennon to Jennings. The country legend’s personal items, like handwritten lyrics, are also in the auction.
The set of Nelson’s braids — famous in their own right — were chopped off in 1983, a message of support from the ‘On the Road Again’ hitmaker to Jennings while he was trying to maintain sobriety.

Jennings died in 2002 at the age of 64 following complications from diabetes. The upcoming auction of his belongings is a means of bringing awareness to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital and the work they do. Later this month, the items will be available for viewing in a catalog collection.

Willie Nelson to host new TV series
November 5, 2014

AUSTIN -- In true Willie fashion, the Red Headed Stranger is helping another Austin music television series get on its feet.

Willie Nelson was the first performer on Austin City Limits 40 years ago, and the show is now the longest-running music series in American television history.

Now, local recording studio Arlyn Studios has announced a new television series featuring the music icon himself as host. Little information has been released about the series, which will be titled "Inside Arlyn Studios," but the studio did say on its Facebook page Wednesday that musical guests on the show will include Merle Haggard and Gary Clark Jr. for "intimate studio performances."

 ::snipping3::

Nelson's nephew, Freddy Fletcher, is a co-owner of the studio, which opened last year on South Congress Avenue.

Music lovers can register online to get show updates and the chance to win tickets to the performances.

Willie Nelson Reveals Date for 30th Annual Farm Aid Concert
February 9, 2015

Willie Nelson has announced the 2015 date for his 30th annual Farm Aid, which helps support family farmers and raises awareness of the importance of locally grown and organic foods.
Farm Aid is the longest-running benefit concert in America. The 2015 event, an all-day food and music festival, will take place on Sept. 19.
“The first Farm Aid concert featured more than 50 artists on one stage,” Nelson said during the Grammy Foundation Legacy Concert on Feb. 5. “In the 29 years since, hundreds more artists have given their time and talent to support family farmers. This year, we would like to invite even more artists to join us onstage as we celebrate family farm agriculture.”
Nelson performed at the Legacy Concert, and Farm Aid was also honored at the event, earning recognition for its live performances from more than 400 artists over 29 years.
Farm Aid also received a $15,000 preservation grant form the Grammy Foundation Grant Program. The grant will be used to develop a plan to digitize, preserve and archive the legendary Farm Aid performances, according to a press release.

More details about 30th anniversary Farm Aid events will be announced soon.
