Police searching for missing teenage girl from Glenburn
May 14, 2013

GLENBURN, Maine — Police are investigating the reported disappearance of a 15-year-old girl from Glenburn.

Nichole Cable was last seen on Route 221 in her hometown on Sunday, according to Penobscot County Sheriff Glenn Ross.

Ross said Tuesday his department is working with numerous other agencies in the area to find Cable. No other information is being released while police continue to investigate.

Cable’s parents, Jason and Kristine Willey, have turned to social media in hopes that their daughter will return home safely. A Facebook group, “Bring Nichole Cable Home,” had 282 members as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

“We have not heard any word from her through social media or friends,” Jason Willey said Tuesday. “Her phone’s been shut off. We just don’t know what else to do.”

Police agencies as far north as Ellsworth and stretching south to Scarborough have also shared information including Cable’s description on Facebook.

Cable has light brown hair and blue eyes and weighs 90 pounds, according to Ross. She was last seen wearing a pair of jeans and a pink sweatshirt, her father said.

She was last seen at 9 p.m. on Sunday, said Chief Deputy Troy Morton.

“I would like to say, ‘Nichole, we love you and if you’re scared because you ran away — you’re not in trouble. It’s OK,’” Cable’s mother, Kristine Willey, said at a Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office press conference with her husband, Jason Willey, standing beside her. “If somebody has her — I don’t care [what happened] — take her to a gas station or a park. I don’t know what else to say. I’m waiting for you to call me and I love you.”

Quote
“This is my daughter,” Willey said, showing the pictures to members of the media. “If you see her, please let the authorities know. Help me bring her home.”

The parents requested they not be questioned by the media, Morton said.

There are 45 law enforcement personnel — federal, state, county and municipal — working the missing person case, Morton said.

“We want the public to know we are using every available resource to locate Nichole,” Morton said, later noting that Maine wardens were conducting a ground search for the Old Town High School student.

Cpl. John McDonald of the Maine Warden Service said a search was taking place in Glenburn. The exact location was not disclosed.

http://www.wabi.tv/news/40236/

Deputies are asking for the public's help find a black Ford Ranger type truck. If you saw one matching that description in the area of Route 221 near Route 43 and Rogers Market or near West Old Town between 8pm Sunday and 2am Monday, call police.

" "This is only a vehicle that we have interest in due to information that's been given to us. It may or may not have been seen in the area so we cannot draw any inferences that this is the suspect's vehicle , it may or may not be. We need to rule it in or rule it out," said Penobscot County Sheriff, Glenn Ross.

The area is so remote, do not have the benefit of areas that have numerous surveillance cameras. But I would think that some one would have had to have seen something.

Since 1971, seven Maine children reported missing have not been found

Posted May 17, 2013, at 7:53 p.m.
 ::snipping3:: ::snipping3::

“Missing children [who aren’t soon located], and there are only a handful, go back 40 years,” McCausland said.

Six children in addition to Cable have been reported missing in Maine since 1971 and have not yet been found, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and media reports.

Aside from Cable, the most recent case of a child missing for a significant length of time is Ayla Reynolds, who was last seen 18 months ago.

Reynolds was 20 months old when she was reported missing from her father’s Waterville home on Dec. 17, 2011. McCausland said on Friday there have been no new developments in the case. Police continue to investigate her disappearance, although they have stated they do not think she will be found alive.

Ayla Reynolds’ disappearance is not the only open missing child case in Maine.

Douglas Charles Chapman, then 3, of Alfred was reported missing June 2, 1971; Cathy Marie Moulton, 16, of Portland was reported missing Sept. 24, 1971; Kurt Ronald Newton, 4, of Manchester was reported missing Sept. 1, 1975; Bernard Ross, 18, of Ashland was reported missing May 12, 1977; and Kimberly Ann Moreau, 17, of Jay was reported missing May 11, 1986.

Chapman was last seen playing by a sandpile about 25 yards from his home in Alfred while his mother was inside on the phone and his father was at work, according to a Maine State Police website dedicated to missing Mainers.

Moulton was last seen in downtown Portland, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s website.

Newton wandered away from his family’s campsite at the Chain of Ponds Public Reserve Land near Coburn Gore on the Quebec border, according to media reports. He was last seen riding his tricycle at the campsite while his mother was out of sight washing muddy shoes.

Moreau was last seen in the company of an individual she met earlier in the day and foul play is suspected, the state police website states.

Two older Maine teenagers who disappeared years ago also remain unaccounted for.

Absolutely the important thing IS finding this young lady indeed.  But I am sure you are also aware of how much work and effort goes into helping to find the missing and how often it is done without even a "thank you".   A little credit to the maker of the poster goes a long way for the hours spent working to keep the missing in the public eye.    ;)

Thank you.  Also, thank you for posting the picture of the truck.  I can't seem to find any way to make the pictures show up.

On their Facebook page, the Old Town High School student’s parents said they believe their daughter was last known to be with a male using a fictitious name on a Facebook account. A Bangor High School student with the same name was questioned by police.

“We are well aware of that theory,” Ross said Thursday. “We have interviewed him and there is nothing at this point that would indicate any other action is needed by our department there.

“But this is an active investigation. His name is out there and perhaps he’s concerned that he might be misaccused.”

The Bangor High student told WLBZ in Bangor that he has been cleared by police.

I have two articles about the kid whose name was used on the fictitious Facebook account... Both about his name being used on the account and not really questioning if he did it.

I didnt know if it was ok to post (since he may be a minor? I don't really know if he is. he did call in to one news org and put himself out there.)

Real Bryan Butterfield looks to clear his name
12:49 PM, May 16, 2013

 ::snipping3::
When the officer knocked on the door he asked Butterfield if Nichole was in the house.  Ironically Bryan's mother is also named Nichole.   Butterfield went through questioning, handed over his phone and social media passwords and says he cooperated with police.

What Bryan says is that he knew this fake account existed and claims he went to police after the person started contacting his friends and girlfriend. According to Butterfield both police and Facebook security did nothing to correct the situation. Now both he and his family are being questioned and scrutinized on social media and in public. And he says it could have been prevented.

Nichole Cable: Was it a diabolical plot to mislead teen and abduct her?
MAY 16, 2013 BY: JERRIE DEAN

 ::snipping3::

One individual on Facebook was accused of involvement in Nichole's disappearance after his name matched the name of the person Nichole was believed to have been talking to before she went missing. The Facebook page of Bryan Butterfield that appears to have been false has been taken down, but the Facebook page of another Bryan Butterfield is still up. Subsequently, he has been targeted by social media and terrorized.

Butterfield went to the news in order to try and clear his name and explain that he was not that Bryan Butterfield. He told WLBZ that he did know Nichole from high school but they "spoke maybe twice." He also told them he knew about the fake Facebook page after that person started contacting his friends and girlfriend.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Department have stated that he is not a suspect at this time.

If this proves to be true, then some person masterminded the diabolical plot of creating a fake Facebook account under the name of a teen that other teen's already knew. Then spent time learning about Nichole's friends and talking with Nichole with the intention of misleading her into believing she was actually talking to the real Bryan Butterfield.

More than 500 help with ground search for missing Glenburn teen Nichole Cable

http://bangordailynews.com/2013/05/19/news/bangor/more-than-500-help-with-ground-search-for-missing-glenburn-teen-nichole-cable/

Quote
Well over 500 people took to the roadsides, woods and bogs of the Glenburn area Sunday in the search for 15-year-old Nichole Cable, who last was seen a week ago.

“Thank you for coming to help find my baby girl. It means the world to me that the community is here for us,” Kristine Wiley, the missing teen’s mother, told searchers during a brief, emotion-filled appearance Sunday morning at the Glenburn Fire Station.

“Our goal is to bring her home safe and I want to thank you for being here,” Wiley said as she stood flanked by family before a small sea of volunteers, the vast majority of them wearing orange vests and sturdy boots.

Besides more than a dozen law enforcement officials, Sunday’s massive search effort drew an estimated 100 trained volunteers from 17 search and rescue teams from throughout Maine.

Police find remains of Nichole Cable, 15, in Old Town woods
Posted May 21, 2013, at 12:24 a.m.
Last modified May 21, 2013, at 11:53 a.m.

OLD TOWN, Maine — Authorities were in the woods near the Stillwater River in Old Town Tuesday morning at the site where the body of Nichole Cable is believed to have been found.

State Police and other law enforcement were gathered near the intersection of Routes 43 and 16 and were seen putting up yellow crime scene tape at about 9:30 a.m. A state police spokesman confirmed the activity at the scene was related to the discovery of the body Monday night. A black minivan was seen entering the barricaded area and leaving minutes later. Authorities believe but have not confirmed that the body found Monday is that of Cable, who disappeared from her Glenburn home last week.

“They’re still processing the scene,” Mark Belserene, a spokesman for the state medical examiner’s office, said Tuesday morning. “The plan is to do the autopsy today, if possible.”

Orono man charged with murder in death of Glenburn teen
Tuesday, May 21, 2013

BANGOR — A 20-year-old Orono man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of Nichole Cable, a 15-year-old girl from Glenburn whose body was discovered Monday night in a wooded area of Old Town, according to a Bangor attorney.

Kyle Dube is in custody at the Penobscot County Jail where he had begun serving a 90-day sentence on May 17 for an unrelated criminal speeding conviction, according to court records.

His first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Stephen Smith, a Bangor attorney, confirmed Tuesday morning that he has been retained to represent the man.

The Maine State Police and Orono police were at the Dube’s residence at 5 Maplewood Ave. on Wednesday, according to neighbors James and Deborah Bowie. The Maine State Police Mobile Crime Unit was there Sunday and Monday, they said.

Stephen McCausland said Sunday night that he didn’t have any information on why the crime lab was there but the neighbors said the mother of that household told them that Nichole had been there about week earlier to visit and that she reported that to police.

Neighbors said Kyle reportedly had been using his father’s black Ford Ranger for work purposes. The truck has been impounded, State Police confirmed Tuesday.

Man charged in murder of Glenburn girl

Kyle Dube, 20, has been charged with one count of murder in the killing of teenager Nichole Cable, whose remains were found near the east shore of the Stillwater River, off Route 43 in Old Town.

Maine State Police are leading the investigation.

Dube has been in custody at the Penobscot County Jail since May 17, when he turned himself in on an unrelated traffic charge.

He is expected to appear in Penobscot County Superior Court at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

A steady stream of police vehicles have been arriving and leaving the site, including uniformed troopers, state police detectives and Maine wardens.

A state police crime scene van could be seen a short distance down a road used to access the dam that spans the river there.

Police had erected crime scene tape to block off the scene but that was removed to allow the free passage of police vehicles.

A friend of Cable's, Tyler Ann Harris, a sophomore at Old Town High School, said that Cable and Dube had been friends and that she'd been planning to meet him shortly before her disappearance. Dube had wanted to see Cable before he started serving jail time on a traffic offense, Harris said.

Rest in Peace, Nichole. So sad.

But I have to ask the obvious question ... what was a 15 year old girl doing handing out with a 20 year old guy?

Good question.  And why was she permitted to leave the house at 9 p.m. to meet a guy?

Family remembers Nichole “CoCo” Cable, warns of social media dangers
Last modified May 21, 2013, at 7:03 p.m.

GLENBURN, Maine — Clutching a panda bear pillow close to her chest because it smelled like her daughter, Kristine Wiley said parents need to be vigilant about their children’s online activity.

“If this saves somebody else’s child, then this won’t have happened for nothing,” Wiley said through her tears Tuesday afternoon in her Spruce Lane home.

Police found what they believe is 15-year-old Nichole Cable’s body near a dirt road off Gilman Falls Avenue in Old Town at about 9:30 p.m. Monday night. Kyle Dube, 20, of Orono was charged with intentional and knowing murder about 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, but police have not said what led to his arrest.

Investigators have not released details about what, if any, relationship Cable had with her accused killer, but family members say social media played a role in the events that led to her death. They said they could not provide details of the investigation, but that more information would be released in the coming days. Cable’s biological father declined to comment Tuesday.

Tyler-Ann Harris, a friend of Cable’s who attended a police press conference Tuesday, said Dube and Cable had been “hanging out” for the past 1½ to two months.

Cable’s stepfather, Jason Wiley, said parents should have access to their young children’s social media accounts and text messages, “no matter how upset kids get with the invasion of privacy,” because it could save a life.

Rest in Peace, precious child.

Kyle Dube formally charged with murder of Nichole Cable
4:04 PM, May 22, 2013

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Kyle Dube has been formally charged in the death of 15 year old Nichole Cable.
 ::snipping3::
Many of the people who turned out to watch the arraignment were friends and family of Nichole Cable. Cable's mother, Kristine Willey, was escorted into the room by courthouse security. She was visibly emotional, crying and clutching a teddy bear.

At 11:50 AM Wednesday morning, Kyle Dube entered the courtroom. He was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. He had no expression on his face.

The state asked that Kyle Dube be held without bail.

Dube's lawyer, Stephen Smith, asked the affidavit to be impounded. At a new conference Tuesday, State Police declined to answer many questions about the investigation, saying that media would have to wait for the affidavit. The Judge says he will make a decision about the affidavit by the end of the day.

Dube did not have to enter a plea.

Cable's family declined to speak with the media as they left the hearing.

Nichole Cable Update: Friend says man charged in missing Maine girl's death knew her; suspect appears in court

(CBS/AP) BANGOR, Maine - Nichole Cable, a 15-year-old Maine girl found dead in woods north of Bangor, knew the man charged with killing her, her best friend said, contrary to early reports that before her disappearance she'd headed outside her Glenburn home to see someone she recently met on Facebook.

Kyle Dube, 20, of Orono, had been friends with the victim for a couple of months, and they'd made plans to see each other the weekend that she disappeared, said Tyler-Ann Harris, 16, who described herself as Nichole's best friend.
 ::snipping3::
Harris said Tuesday that Dube and Nichole planned to see each other the weekend she vanished, in April, before he was required to report to jail. Harris, who attended Old Town High School with Nichole, said she was surprised that Dube was charged in her death because she thought the two got along.

She described Nichole as someone who enjoyed life.

"She was really happy even though she went through a lot of hard stuff in her life. She always knew how to see the bright side of things," Harris said, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.

Dube's parents live in a tidy brick and white-sided house in Orono. A young man who answered the door Tuesday said the family didn't want to talk and closed the door.

Until quitting last week, Dube had worked since last June for The Getchell Agency, a Bangor organization  that cares for people with disabilities. The agency's CEO, Rena Getchell, said in an email to The Associated Press that his background check and employee reviews were satisfactory.

"He gave us no reason to believe that he might be capable of this crime," she said. "This is devastating news to us as we truly are a family."

The body believed to be Nichole's was found at about 9:30 p.m. Monday by a warden who was searching the woods with a dog, officials said. The medical examiner took possession of the body to make a positive identification and issue a ruling on how she died.

Nichole's mother, Kristine Wiley, said after she disappeared that Nichole had said she was going out to meet someone she knew from Facebook. But Wiley said she didn't know the identity of the person.

I hope the news organizations that are challenging this don't get their way if it would in any way jeopardize this case.  If this man is guilty, he needs to be off the street and away from our children.

I hope no more children were harmed.  I am thinking of the children with disabilities, too.  They are twice as likely to be abused and not as likely to report it.  Some cannot report it.  That is the saddest part of having a child with a disability who may be hurt.  Even if they do report it, they can be bullied into keeping quiet more easily.  I hope Nichole will "speak" to the officers through clues she has left for them.

My heart goes out to everyone affected by Nichole's death, my prayers are with you.

Maine man tried to stage kidnapping and rescue of teenage girl, according to affidavit

Published May 29, 2013

BANGOR, Maine –  A man used a fake Facebook account to lure a teenage girl out of her house in an attempt to stage her kidnapping and rescue so he could look like a hero but ended up killing her, a police affidavit released Wednesday said.

Kyle Dube was indicted Wednesday on charges of murder and kidnapping in the death of 15-year-old Nichole Cable, whose body was found in a wooded area of Old Town this month a week after she went missing.

Dube, of Orono, had intended to kidnap and hide Nichole and later find her and "be the hero," the affidavit said. But she died in the back of his pickup truck after he duct-taped her while wearing a ski mask, it said.

Affidavit shows relationship between Nichole Cable and Kyle Dube

 1:01 PM, Jun 6, 2013

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A newly released affidavit shows text messages between Nichole Cable and Kyle Dube indicating a previous relationship.

According to the affidavit, Nichole texted Kyle Dube about her meeting with the fake Bryan Butterfield.  She seems unaware it was Dube behind the Facebook page.  Cable texted Dube, telling him about the meeting.  Dube told her to text him if she needed anything.

In the affidavit, Cable describes to her boyfriend that Dube allegedly attacked her the night before she disappeared. Cable wrote, " Kyle was trying to kiss and grope me I kept trying to push him off of me and he wouldn't stop."
 ::snipping3:: ::snipping3::

The affidavit states that officers believe a foot chase and possible struggle had occurred.  Police noticed scratches on Dube's face when interviewing him on May 15th.

Officers also recovered a ski mask with an eye hole cut into on near the area where Cable was supposed to meet the fake Brian Butterfield. Dube's DNA was found on that mask.

Orono man enters not guilty pleas in Cable kidnapping, murder
June 19, 2013
BANGOR, Maine — The Orono man accused of kidnapping and killing a 15-year-old girl from Glenburn and Alton in May pleaded not guilty to both crimes Wednesday at the Penobscot Judicial Center.

Kyle Dube, 20, who faces one count each of kidnapping and murder in the death of Nichole Cable on May 12, told Superior Court Justice Ann Murray that he understood the charges against him when he entered the two pleas.

Stephen Smith, the Bangor attorney appointed to represent Dube, has asked that his client undergo a psychological evaluation to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.

Murray said she would decide on the request at a later date.
