BOSTON (AP) — After nearly 16 years on the run and two years after his arrest on charges he played a role in 19 murders, James "Whitey" Bulger is about to face a jury.

A judge will hold a final pretrial conference on Monday afternoon before jury selection begins Tuesday in the trial of the reputed Boston mob boss.

Bulger, who is 83, fled in 1994 after being tipped off that he was about to be indicted. He was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in June 2011.

Prosecutors plan to call mob figures, including Bulger's former partner, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, who is now serving a life sentence for 10 murders.

Jury selection begins for Boston mobster 'Whitey' Bulger
June 4, 2013

The ruthless Boston mobster who eluded the FBI for 12 years is now an 83-year-old defendant.

As jury selection gets underway Tuesday in the murder trial of legendary Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, there is no bigger sign of the high-octane status of the case than the fact that the jurors will be referred to by number, not names.

U.S. District Judge Denise Casper, citing intense media attention, said Monday that "given the circumstances," the jurors' names will not be made public until after the panel renders a verdict. She indicated the trial could last as long as three months.

The panel will be drawn from a pool of 675 possible jurors who will be weeded out then questioned Tuesday and Wednesday.

While Bulger still generates tabloid excitement in Boston, he is no longer a ruthless, bigger-than-life crime boss deftly eluding authorities, but an 83-year-old man whose six-decades of crime appears to be finally catching up to him.

Bulger, who spent 12 years on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, faces 19 charges of murder, including the alleged strangulation in 1981 of Debra Davis because she was planning to break up with his partner, Steven "The Rifleman" Flemmi.
The brutal organized crime boss, who terrorized South Boston in the '70s and '80s as head of the Winter Hill Gang, is also accused of racketeering, extortion and weapons and money-laundering in a 33-count indictment.

After 16 years on the run with longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig, Bulger was captured in 2011 in Santa Monica, Calif. when a neighbor realized he was the infamous Irish mobster from Boston.

Greig was sentenced to 8 years in prison in 2012 after pleading guilty to a string of charges, including conspiracy to harbor a fugitive and identity fraud.

Bulger's wily image was burnished by a double game he was apparently playing with the FBI as an informant for almost two decades, keeping the feds at bay by providing information on a rival Italian American gang.

He fled Boston in 1994 after being tipped off by his former FBI handler, John Connelly.

But Bulger's hopes of being able to claim immunity for his alleged crimes because of his work for the FBI were dashed by Judge Casper who ruled that any purported immunity deal was "not a defense to the crimes charged."

Although Bulger is now a balding old man with a white beard, seemingly a relic of a bygone era, his trial should have plenty of juice.

Bulger defense seeks delay in opening statements
June 10, 2013

BOSTON (AP) — Defense attorneys for James "Whitey" Bulger have asked a judge to delay opening statements in his racketeering trial.

In a motion filed Monday, Bulger's lawyers asked for a stay of proceedings while they conduct their own investigation into a man expected to be a key witness against the reputed Boston mobster.

The defense says John Martorano, who admitted killing 20 people, has committed crimes since his release from federal prison and has been shielded from investigation by law enforcement.

Prosecutors have denied the allegations.

Defense lawyers are asking for documents and say the prosecution's refusal to turn them over is "inexcusable, inexplicable and unconstitutional."

Boston's top FBI official, who led marathon bombing probe, to retire
June 11, 2013

(Reuters) - The head of the FBI's Boston office, who has supervised high-profile investigations including the probe into April's Boston Marathon bombings, will retire next month after more than 26 years with the agency, the bureau said on Tuesday.

Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers, originally from Longmeadow, Massachusetts, has helmed investigations such as the 2010 operation code-named Ghost Stories, in which 10 people were rounded up as suspected Russian spies.

He became best known across the United States following the April 15 marathon bombing as the agent who stepped forward to ask the public for help identifying the two men suspected of placing the twin pressure-cooker bombs at the marathon finish line.
 ::snipping3::
It was not the first time DesLauriers successfully appealed to the public for help. Accused Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger was arrested with his girlfriend Catherine Greig in a seaside California apartment around two years ago after DesLauriers launched a media campaign focused on Greig that led to a tip.

Bulger's trial on charges including 19 murder counts opens Wednesday.

Opening statements in Bulger trial to begin
June 12, 2013

(NECN: Justin Michaels) - Wednesday is the beginning of the trial for accused South Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, as it gets underway with opening statements later Wednesday morning.

The jury was seated yeTuesday after six days of trying to find the best candidates for this jury. It is made up of 18 people from eastern Massachusetts, 11 men and seven women.

Twelve jurors will actually decide on Bulger’s guilt or innocence. The remaining six are alternates.

Things got pretty heated in court Tuesday. Bulger's attorney, J. W. Carney, raised his voice and interrupted Judge Denise Casper while arguing for a delay in opening statements and for documents he says could prove that the Massachusetts State Police have shielded Bulger cohort, turned government witness John Martorano from prosecution for crimes he allegedly committed since his release from federal prison in 2007.

Judge Casper denied the defense’s motion late Tuesday.

The trial for Bulger starts Wednesday morning at 8:45 and is expected end sometime in September.

Bulger Is No Angel, but an Informant? Never, Jury Is Told
June 12, 2013

BOSTON — The lawyer for James (Whitey) Bulger, the reputed onetime Boston mob boss, told a packed courtroom Wednesday morning that his client was many things — bookmaker, drug dealer and loan shark who made “millions and millions” of dollars from his underworld dealings. But there was one thing he never was — an informer for the F.B.I.
“James Bulger is of Irish descent,” J. W. Carney Jr., the lawyer, declared in his opening argument. “And the worst thing an Irish person could consider doing is becoming an informant. That was the first and foremost reason why James Bulger was never an informant against people.”

There was a secondary reason, too, Mr. Carney said, also of a tribal nature. The F.B.I. was mainly interested in the Italian mafia, but Mr. Bulger could not have been of use, Mr. Carney said, because he did not know many Italian gangsters.

“James Bulger was not deeply tied to the Italian mafia,” he said. The Italians “wouldn’t let someone of that background be knowledgeable.”

In the litany of charges against Mr. Bulger, being an inside source for the law is not listed. But his lawyer’s declarations in court made clear that this is the most important misconception about him that Mr. Bulger wants to clear up.

Mr. Bulger’s day in court finally arrived Wednesday morning for the coda of his lifetime of crime — a major criminal trial in which his decades-long dominance of the South Boston underworld will be laid before the public. Mr. Bulger, whose first arrest occurred at age 13, is now 83.
Mr. Bulger sat at the defense table at the federal courthouse here wearing a Kelly green sweater tucked into bluejeans and sporting white sneakers. One of his younger brothers, Jackie, sat behind him. Across the courtroom, the benches were jammed with families of people whose deaths Mr. Bulger is accused of having had a hand in.

The government painted a less noble portrait of Mr. Bulger. In the prosecution’s view, he was “at the center” of a criminal enterprise that “ran amok in the city of Boston for almost 30 years.” And the prosecution made sure the jury understood that he had a role, often pulling the trigger, in 19 murders.

“He was no ordinary leader,” said Brian Kelly, the assistant United States attorney who made the government’s opening arguments. “He did the dirty work himself because he was a hands-on killer.”

Mr. Bulger is charged in a sweeping and complex 32-count indictment, and the prosecution needed diagrams and flow charts to try to explain his role in the crimes.

'Whitey' Bulger's Attorney: FBI Informant File on Boston Mobster Was Falsified
June 12, 2013

Notorious former Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger appeared in court Wednesday, listening to opening arguments in his trial for allegedly ordering or committing 19 murders in the 1970s and '80s.

Bulger's attorney opened by denying that his client ever worked with the FBI as an informant against Italian mob rivals – a key part of the popular narrative about Bulger's life of crime, which inspired the popular 2006 film "The Departed."
 ::snipping3::
Carney said former FBI agent John Connolly fabricated details in his FBI informant file.

"Ask yourself, would an informant be paying tens of thousands of dollars to the agent, or would it be the other way around?" Carney said, alleging that Bulger was paying the FBI agent for information, not the other way around, the Boston Globe reports.

"He wanted to pay for information and received it from corrupt law enforcement officers," Carney said. "The reason Connolly created the file was just a cover-up for why he was being seen with Bulger so often."

Bulger spent 16 years on the run – and 12 years on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" list – before his June 2011 arrest in Santa Monica, Calif. Authorities say they found $822,000 and 30 guns inside the apartment that Bulger shared with his long-time girlfriend Catherine Greig
Greig pleaded guilty last year to conspiring to harbor a fugitive and identity theft charges, and is serving an eight-year sentence.

Connolly, the former FBI agent, was convicted in 2002 of racketeering and obstruction of justice charges for, among other things, tipping Bulger off about his impending arrest. A Florida jury also convicted Connolly of second-degree murder in 2009 for providing Bulger with information that led to the 1982 murder of a possible witness.

Connolly is now serving a 40-year sentence for the murder conviction, but maintains his innocence. "The Justice Department is going to do everything within its power to try to make sure the full story never comes out," he told The Daily Beast last year in an interview.

Trial of ‘Whitey’ Bulger returns to evidence of murders
6-20-13

BOSTON — The trial of James “Whitey” Bulger on Thursday turns back to evidence of the 19 murders the alleged mob boss is accused of committing or ordering while he ran the ruthless Winter Hill crime gang in the 1970s and ’80s.

Family members of some of Bulger’s alleged victims may take the stand to identify photos of their murdered relatives.

Three days of testimony from star witness John Martorano — the first of Bulger’s former lieutenants to take the stand — included chilling details of hits the now 72-year-old confessed killer described carrying out with Bulger.

Bulger, portrayed by his attorneys as a mild-mannered loan shark, extortionist and drug dealer but not a murderer, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Now 83, he faces life in prison if convicted.

Bulger trial witness: I lived to tell tale of Russian roulette-style drama
July 17, 2013

Boston (CNN) -- Former drug smuggler William David Lindholm has a harrowing tale of how reputed Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger allegedly tried to extort $1 million by having a bullet fired past Lindholm's head.
In the end, Lindholm lived to testify Wednesday at Bulger's federal trial about surviving a high-stakes, Russian roulette-style game.
Bulger is charged in the deaths of 19 people during some two decades when prosecutors say he terrorized South Boston as the head of the Irish mob. He also faces charges of extortion, racketeering and money laundering. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Prosecutors allege Bulger shook down more than a dozen criminals and made them pay "rent" -- cash for permission to carry on with their business on the streets of Boston.
 ::snipping3::
Lindholm, who is in the witness protection program, is testifying on a compulsion order under grounds of immunity. He was convicted of drug and tax evasion charges and joins the laundry list of government witnesses who served a lesser sentence after agreeing to cooperate.

James "Whitey" Bulger's former pal told a federal court today that he brought his girlfriend to a house so Bulger could strangle her because she knew about corrupt FBI agents who were helping the alleged Boston mob boss.

"He really wanted to kill her," Stephen "the Rifleman" Flemmi told the court.

"Did you agree with that?" asked federal prosecutor Fred Wyshak.

"Not at first,'' Flemmi, 79, answered. "But then he gave me a litany of reasons."

Those reasons, Flemmi told the court, centered on what Debbie Davis – a young, pretty blonde who he began dating when she was 17 – knew about the relationship he and Bulger had with rogue FBI agents.

US rests case after painting Boston mobster as cold-blooded killer
July 26, 2013

(Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors paraded hit men, drug dealers, bookies, and cops from a bygone era before a jury, painting ex-mobster James 'Whitey' Bulger as a cold-hearted killer and a government snitch before wrapping up more than six weeks of testimony on Friday.

Once the most feared criminal in Boston's underworld, Bulger, 83, faces life in prison if convicted on charges related to 19 murders he is accused of committing or ordering as boss of the Winter Hill Gang in the 1970s and 80s.

Prosecutors put some of Bulger's closest partners in crime on the stand. They recalled an era when gun-toting gangsters dumped bodies under bridges or buried them in earthen basements and exchanged information with corrupt FBI agents in a bloody struggle for money and power.
 ::snipping3::
Bulger's defense lawyers have said he is not guilty, and are poised to sow doubt about the witnesses, many of whom were neck-deep in crime themselves and may be seeking reduced sentences.

His attorneys plan to call a handful of witnesses starting on Monday, but they have not made clear whether Bulger, whose story inspired Martin Scorsese's Academy Award-winning film "The Departed," will take the stand himself.

Bulger fled Boston after a 1994 tip from a corrupt FBI official and spent 16 years as a fugitive before law enforcement caught him hiding out in a seaside apartment in California in 2011, with a stash of money and guns.

Scott Garriola, a special agent with the FBI in Los Angeles, testified on Friday that the ageing criminal swore at the arresting agents when they confronted him and refused their demands he kneel down "because there was grease on the ground."

INNOCENT VICTIMS

The trial took an alarming turn last week, when the body of alleged Bulger extortion victim Stephen Rakes was found in a Boston suburb. Police are still investigating the cause of his death, though a lawyer for Rakes' family said he did not believe the death was linked to the trial.

Some of the most riveting testimony came from Bulger crony and long-time friend Stephen Flemmi, who is serving a life sentence for 10 murders he confessed to a decade ago in a plea deal that spared him execution.

Will Whitey Bulger testify? It’s still not clear
July 31, 2013

Will notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger testify in his own defense? The answer is still unclear.

Bulger’s defense team disclosed today more of the witnesses they will call in the coming days, but did not tell a federal judge whether Bulger will testify.

“That may not be the limit to the defense,” said defense attorney Jay W. Carney after talking about the other witnesses.

US District Court Judge Denise Casper is presiding over the racketeering trial of Bulger in federal court on Boston’s waterfront.

Bulger’s attorneys said before the trial that he planned to testfy. But as the trial has worn on for weeks, there has been no further word on Bulger’s plans.

Assistant US Attorney Fred Wyshak told Judge Casper this morning that the government has a right to know if Bulger is going to testify. He asked if prosecutors will be asked to deliver closing arguments in the case Friday or to cross-examine Bulger.

“He’s had two months to make that decision,” he said.

Potential witness in Whitey Bulger trial was poisoned, authorities say
August 2, 2013

A potential witness in the James "Whitey" Bulger trial whose body was found in the woods of a Boston suburb last month was poisoned, authorities said Friday.

William Camuti, 69, was charged with attempted murder in the death of Stephen Rakes, who reportedly owed him money.

When asked if the alleged murder was linked to the Bulger case, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said, “our investigation indicates that Mr. Camuti acted alone.”

A statement from Ryan’s office said Rakes and Camuti met for coffee at a McDonalds in Waltham on July 16 and Camuti purchased two iced coffees, one of which he allegedly laced with two teaspoons of potassium cyanide before giving it to Rakes to drink.

He then allegedly drove around with Rakes in his car before dumping the body in a wooded area of Lincoln, where it was found by joggers the next day.

A murder charge has not been filed because the medical examiner is still waiting on test results.

Prosecutors say Rakes and his former wife were forced to sell Bulger their South Boston liquor store in 1984 to use as a headquarters for his gang.

Rakes had looked forward to testifying but learned the day before his body was found that prosecutors wouldn't call him.

Closing arguments Monday in Bulger case
August 4, 2013

At 83, "Whitey" Bulger could spend the rest of his life in prison for crimes his lawyers did little to dispute. He complains he wasn't allowed to make his case: that he was promised immunity.

BOSTON – As closing arguments begin Monday morning in the murder and racketeering trial of James "Whitey" Bulger, the notorious Boston mobster ranks among those not expecting an acquittal.

"I feel that I've been choked off from having an opportunity to give an adequate defense," Bulger said in court Friday, dismissing his trial as "a sham."

He claims a former Justice Department strike force chief promised him immunity from prosecution in exchange for protection against deadly threats, but Judge Denise Casper wouldn't allow that argument. On Friday, Bulger declined to testify.

Now, as the trial nears its climax, success for the Bulger defense could mean something less than a "not guilty" verdict on all 32 counts.

'Whitey' Bulger Prosecutor Says This Is 'Not Some Robin Hood Story'
August 5, 2013

Federal prosecutors spent this morning trying to convince a jury that the summer-long trial of James "Whitey" Bulger came down to these simple questions:

"Follow the evidence…it's like putting a puzzle together. Who shot who? Why did it happen? Who extorted who? Who shook down who?" federal prosecutor Fred Wyshak told the jury were the important questions to remember.

And, in the government's closing arguments, Wyshak insisted that the answer to those questions was Bulger and his criminal cohorts in the Winter Hill Gang.

"This is not some Robin Hood story about some man who keeps angel dust and heroin out of South Boston,'' Wyshak told the jury. "It demonstrates the cold calculated approach that men like… Jim Bulger have toward their fellow men."

'Whitey' Bulger jury ends first day of deliberations
August 6, 2013

BOSTON — Jurors began their deliberations Tuesday in the trial of James “Whitey” Bulger, the reputed crime boss who is accused of participating in 19 slayings during a two-decade reign over Boston's underworld.

The jury deliberated for nearly six hours before being dismissed for the day. Deliberations will resume Wednesday morning.

Bulger is charged with orchestrating or committing the killings during the 1970s and '80s while he allegedly led the notorious Winter Hill Gang, a crew of mostly Irish American gangsters.

Jurors in Bulger’s trial ask about aiding and abetting as they deliberate racketeering case
August 7, 2013
BOSTON — As jurors in the racketeering trial of reputed gangster James “Whitey” Bulger started their second day of deliberations on Wednesday, they asked the judge for clarification on the culpability of someone who helps in the commission of a crime.

The jury asked Judge Denise Casper to explain joint venture, which essentially means being a co-conspirator or a member of a racketeering organization that commits a crime. It also asked about aiding and abetting, which means assisting in the commission of the crime.

Bulger, 83, is accused in a sweeping racketeering indictment of playing a role in 19 killings while allegedly leading the Winter Hill Gang, sometimes as the triggerman and other times helping to plan or orchestrate the slayings, or driving a car used as part of the plan.

Casper had told the jurors during her instructions that prosecutors don’t have to prove that Bulger himself committed the 19 killings, but they may find him guilty if they find he aided in the killings. In response to their question Wednesday, she referred them to copies of her instructions.

Whitey Bulger convicted of racketeering, conspiracy
Whitey Bulger was convicted Monday of racketeering and conspiracy by a Boston jury that found he committed 11 murders and a raft other crimes as an iron-fisted crime boss.

Although Bulger now faces a possible life sentence, his lawyers said he was happy about the trial result because it exposed government corruption. He intends to appeal on the grounds that he was not allowed to argue he had immunity from the feds.

Massachusetts prosecutors mull charges at state level against Bulger
August 14, 2013

BOSTON –  Prosecutors in Massachusetts plan to meet with their federal counterparts to determine whether murder or other charges can be brought against James "Whitey" Bulger or his associates at the state level now that his federal trial is over.

A spokesman for Suffolk's district attorney says the office is "always looking for evidence that can help us investigate and prosecute" homicides.

Bulger was convicted Monday in 11 killings. He's never been charged with murder in a Massachusetts court.

State prosecutors tell The Boston Globe Bulger's associates could also face trial, including one who allegedly took part in several slayings but was never charged.

Relatives of Bulger victims to speak at mob boss sentencing
September 10, 2013

(Reuters) - More than a dozen relatives of James "Whitey" Bulger's murder victims hope to testify at the convicted mob boss' sentencing hearing in November, U.S. prosecutors told a judge on Tuesday.

Bulger, 84, faces the possibility of life in prison after being convicted last month of 31 criminal counts, including 11 murders he committed or ordered while running Boston's notorious "Winter Hill" crime gang in the 1970s and 80s.

Prosecutors intend to submit statements from family members of all 19 people Bulger was accused of killing or ordering murdered, Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Kelly told U.S. District Judge Denise Casper. The jury found him guilty on 11 of those 19 murder charges.

Bulger was not present in court on Tuesday. His sentencing is scheduled to begin November 13.
Casper said she expected any family members of victims to control their anger if they testify.

Bulger defense costs total $2.6M through June
September 13, 2013

BOSTON (AP) — Defense costs for convicted Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger totaled more than $2.6 million through June, according to a court filing Friday.
The accounting includes fees for his court-appointed attorneys, J.W. Carney Jr., and Hank Brennan, and other expenses totaling about $17,000.
Bulger, 84, was convicted Aug. 12 of racketeering, including 11 killings, as well as extortion, money laundering and weapons charges, in the 1970s and '80s. He faces the possibility of life in prison when he is sentenced in November.
 ::snipping3::

Taxpayers can expect more bills for Bulger's defense: the expenses disclosed Friday begin with the end of June 2011, when Bulger was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., through the beginning of his trial. They don't include July and August when his trial was ongoing.
Bulger's attorneys were paid the standard rate of $125 an hour. Other costs included $139,000 for paralegal services, $62,000 for investigative services and $36,000 for transcripts.
Prosecutors have said the criminal operations Bulger controlled made millions, and more than $800,000 in cash was found hidden in his California apartment. He was granted public defenders when he said his assets had been seized by the government.

Mobster ‘Whitey’ Bulger Worth $25 Million, Prosecutors Claim

The U.S. Attorney’s office made a detailed tally of testimony from Bulger victims who recounted form the stand extortion and drug-deal shakedowns, and “rent” paid by other criminals. Prosecutors determined the earnings of Bulger and his criminal compatriots “spanned decades” and totaled $25,162,800 in ill-gotten gains.
The government wants a judge to force Bulger to reveal where his money may be hidden. The mob boss had opened safety deposit boxes around the world.
Bulger was convicted last month of murdering 11 people, extortion, money laundering and weapons charges after a trial that came nearly twenty years after he was tipped off to a pending federal indictment by a corrupt FBI agent.
Police found $822,000 in cash secreted in the walls of his Santa Monica hideout, where he and his longtime companion spent 14 years living a life on the lam. Bulger was second only to Osama Bin Laden on the FBI’s Most Wanted List.
In his opening statement, Bulger defense attorney Jay Carney admitted his client made “millions upon millions upon millions” of dollars, and now the government wants the 83-year-old to relinquish any assets. He is slated to be sentenced in November.

Officials: Cyanide killed potential Bulger witness
October 20, 2013

BOSTON (AP) - The Massachusetts medical examiner's office determined that cyanide poisoning killed an alleged extortion victim of Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger who had hoped to testify at Bulger's trial, prosecutors said Sunday.

The medical examiner's office concluded that Stephen Rakes, 59, of Quincy, died of acute cyanide toxicity in July and ruled his death a homicide, according to MaryBeth Long, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex district attorney's office.

Authorities said Rakes' death wasn't related to the Bulger case.

Rakes' business associate, William Camuti, 69, of Sudbury, is charged with attempted murder and other crimes for allegedly poisoning Rakes' iced coffee. Camuti has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors said Camuti owed Rakes money and lured him to a meeting where he poisoned his drink then drove Rakes around for hours before dumping his body.

Long said the district attorney's office intends to file additional charges against Camuti based on the new findings by the medical examiner.
 ::snipping3::
Rakes' body was found in a wooded area of the Boston suburb of Lincoln on July 17, just a day after he learned he wouldn't be called as a witness against Bulger. Rakes openly despised Bulger and blamed him for seizing control of his South Boston liquor store to use as headquarters for Boston's Irish mob in 1984.

Bulger was convicted in August of 11 killings and dozens of other gangland crimes. He is set to be sentenced next month.

Whitey Bulger, Boston gangster protected as informant by FBI, gets 2 life sentences plus 5 years
November 14, 2013

Notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger was sentenced today to two life sentences in prison plus five years by a federal judge who cited the lives Bulger wrecked as he rampaged for decades through the city’s underworld under the protection of corrupt FBI agents.

“The testimony of human suffering that you and your associates inflicted on others was at times agonizing to hear and painful to watch,” said US District Court Judge Denise J. Casper, who recited, one by one, the names of the people Bulger murdered.

“The scope, the callousness, the depravity of your crimes, are almost unfathomable,” she said in the stillness of a courtroom filled with teary-eyed relatives of the killer’s victims.

Bulger, 84, was convicted earlier this year of charges that he participated in 11 murders, drug trafficking, racketeering, money laundering, extortion, and other crimes. Bulger fled Boston shortly before his 1995 racketeering indictment. One the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted — along with Osama bin Laden — he eluded a worldwide manhunt until he was captured in June 2011 in Santa Monica, Calif.

Bulger was able to operate with impunity for years as a prized informant for the FBI who had a cozy relationship with corrupt agents.

Showing no emotion, Bulger listened intently to Casper’s remarks and then stood, flanked by his lawyers, in his orange jail jumpsuit, for sentencing. He folded his hands in front of him halfway through the judge’s words.

“You are hereby committed to the Bureau of Prisons for the term of life,” the judge told him.
 ::snipping3::
Casper also ordered Bulger to pay $19.5 million in restitution to his victims’ families. And she ordered him to forfeit $25.2 million to the government. The awards appeared to be largely symbolic because law enforcement has not uncovered anywhere near that amount of money stashed away by Bulger.

Noting the publicity that has been given to Bulger’s story in recent years, Casper said, “You have, in some ways, over time become a face of this city. .... It’s regrettable.”

Referring to the city’s response to the Boston Marathon bombings this year, Casper said Bulger should not represent the city. “You and your cohorts should not and do not represent the city,” she said.

Casper said she hardly knew where to begin in discussing Bulger’s crimes and that she had “struggled with what would ever be just punishment for the unfathomable harm that you have caused.”

Casper’s remarks took only about a half-hour. After a sidebar conference, Bulger hugged his lawyers before being led away in handcuffs. He did not look back or say a word.

Defense attorneys have said they plan to appeal. Attorney Hank Brennan said after today’s hearing that Bulger should have been able to present in court his claim that he had been given immunity for his crimes by a federal prosecutor.

“They wouldn’t let him. What are they afraid of?” he said. “The government, at some point, has to recognize their responsibility and be accountable.”

In August, jurors found that Bulger participated in 11 murders while operating a sprawling criminal enterprise from the 1970s through the 1990s that trafficked in cocaine and marijuana; extorted drug dealers, businessmen, and bookmakers; and corrupted FBI agents and other law enforcement officials. He was convicted of 31 counts of racketeering, extortion, money laundering, and weapons possession.

Jurors found that prosecutors proved Bulger participated in 11 of 19 murders he was accused of, including the strangulation of Deborah Hussey; the assassination of Tulsa businessman Roger Wheeler; and the slayings of Edward Connors, Paul McGonagle, Thomas King, Richard Castucci, Edward “Brian” Halloran, Michael Donahue, John Callahan, Arthur “Bucky” Barrett, and John McIntyre.

But jurors found prosecutors failed to prove Bulger participated in seven additional murders: Michael Milano, Al Plummer, William O’Brien, James “Spike” O’Toole, Al Notarangeli, James Sousa, and Francis “Buddy” Leonard. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on whether Bulger was involved in the 1981 strangulation of another woman, Debra Davis.

Bulger has been held at the Plymouth County House of Correction. He is expected to return there today and eventually be transferred to a federal prison

Boston mobster 'Whitey' Bulger to appeal conviction
November 20, 2013

(Reuters) - Lawyers for mobster James "Whitey" Bulger on Wednesday said they plan to appeal his August conviction on charges including 11 murders, less than a week after a U.S. judge sentenced the former leader of Boston's "Winter Hill" gang to two consecutive life terms in prison.

In a brief, two-page filing in U.S. District Court in Boston, Bulger said he was appealing the jury's verdict that found him guilty of 31 of 32 criminal counts, including racketeering, extortion and drug dealing.

The filing does not detail the 84-year-old gangster's specific objections, but U.S. District Judge Denise Casper before the trial prevented his lawyers from mounting the case that Bulger had been granted immunity for his crimes. Casper reasoned that no immunity deal would allow a person to commit murder.

Bulger belongings could land on auction block
November 30, 2013

BOSTON (AP) — Former Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger could soon see some of his jewelry, clothes and other belongings on the auction block.

The U.S. Marshals Service will auction off many of the items seized from Bulger's California apartment after his arrest two years ago, The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/1ag2xrF) reported Saturday. Authorities say the profits will be split among the families of those who were killed by Bulger.

Federal prosecutors told the newspaper that the items belonging to Bulger and his girlfriend are in storage in Massachusetts and are being appraised.

Officials believe the highest-value items include a claddagh ring estimated to be worth $48,000 and Bulger's replica 1986 Stanley Cup championship ring valued at about $3,000.
 ::snipping3::
Bulger also owned a boxing mannequin topped with a hat that was apparently propped in the window of his apartment to make it look as though there was someone keeping lookout. Other items include binoculars, a telescope, camouflage clothing, nine fedoras, 27 pairs of sunglasses, ceramic poodle salt and pepper shakers, assorted porcelain cats and hundreds of books, many with Bulger's handwritten notes scrawled in the margins. There's also a McCain/Palin campaign button and a God Bless America poster.

"The reality is there are lots of people who would be willing to pay money for some or all of the contents of that apartment, and that money is going to victims and victims' families. So we want to do what we can to get as much money as we can for them," First Assistant US Attorney Jack Pirozzolo told the newspaper.

Authorities said they're trying to be sensitive to the victims in the case and have yet to decide whether it is appropriate to cash in on Bulger's notoriety by selling some of the other items, ranging from his blue and white dinnerware to his size 9.5 sneakers.

 ::snipping3::
Jason Wojdylo, chief inspector of the asset forfeiture division of the U.S. Marshals Service, said the U.S. attorney's office will decide what to sell. After the court approves a sale, it usually takes up to 60 days to schedule an auction, he said.

A First Look at Johnny Depp As Whitey Bulger in Black Mass

Plus, photos of the set and upcoming shooting locations for the biopic.

We had a few tips for A-list actor Johnny Depp for when he comes to town to shoot his Whitey Bulger biopic, Black Mass, but even despite our expert advice, it looks like Depp has really gotten in touch with his inner Whitey on his own.

JohnnyDepp.ru got their hands on some photos of Depp from the set of movie, in costume and all, looking a lot like the crime boss himself. Back when Deadline confirmed that Johnny Depp will play Whitey Bulger in one of many upcoming biopics about the Boston criminal, we were pretty concerned about the casting decision. But although his Boston accent has yet to be heard (which may make or break this role), these pictures show that Depp might actually be a more convincing Whitey than we thought.

Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger has been transferred from a federal prison in Tucson to another high-security federal penitentiary in central Florida.

Bulger, who is serving two life sentences for participating in 11 murders, spent several days at a transitional prison in Oklahoma before he arrived this week at the Coleman II penitentiary in Sumterville, Fla., located about 50 miles northwest of Orlando.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons website says the prison houses 1,448 male inmates.

It is unclear why Bulger was moved. His lawyer, Hank Brennan, said, “I haven’t been notified of any reason why he has been moved to Florida ... the Bureau of Prisons routinely moves people for a variety of reasons.”

Boston mobster Bulger's girlfriend to face contempt charges
October 19, 2015

Former Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger's longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, is due in court on Monday to face contempt charges for allegedly refusing to testify about whether anyone helped the couple during their 16 years on the lam.

Greig, 64, is already serving an eight-year sentence in federal prison in Waseca, Minnesota after pleading guilty in 2012 to charges of identity fraud and harboring a fugitive stemming from her years hiding with Bulger.

Bulger, 86, was convicted in 2013 of murdering or ordering the killings of 11 people while he ran the notorious "Winter Hill" gang in the 1970s and 1980s. He is serving a life sentence in a federal penitentiary in Sumterville, Florida.

Prosecutors contend Greig repeatedly refused to testify to a grand jury investigating whether anyone else helped the mobster, who fled Boston in 1994 after a corrupt FBI agent tipped him off that his arrest was imminent.

"The grand jury is entitled to her testimony, and flouting a federal court's order has substantial consequences," Carmen Ortiz, the U.S. attorney for Massachusetts, said last month when she leveled the contempt of court charges against Greig.

Federal law sets no maximum sentence for contempt of court. Any additional prison sentence imposed by Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler would be served after Greig's current sentence ends.

Whitey Bulger's Girlfriend Sentenced to Additional 21 Months in Jail
April 28, 2016

A South Boston woman who spent 16 years on the run with one of Boston’s most notorious gangsters, James “Whitey” Bulger, was sentenced to spend another 21 months behind bars by a federal judge who called her longtime companion “a monster” not worthy of her “love and affection.”

Catherine Greig, 65, is currently serving an eight-year sentence for her role in helping Bulger escape and evade capture after he was tipped to a pending federal indictment by his rogue FBI handler in 1995. She wore a black sweater in court today, her white hair cut short, and smiled at her twin sister Margaret, who was in the courtroom, sitting across from the relatives of two Bulger murder victims.

The couple was captured in June 2011 living in a rent-controlled apartment near the Santa Monica Pier using the monikers Charles and Carol Gasko. Investigators found 30 high-powered weapons in the walls along with a stash of $822,000 in cash. Their bedroom was lined with bookshelves stocked with Bulger’s favorite mob books. Many featured him.

Today’s sentencing dealt with new federal criminal contempt charges stemming from what prosecutors called Greig’s “consistent, dogged and tireless” refusal to cooperate with a grand jury that continues to investigate who, if anyone, helped Bulger while he hid from authorities.

“The public has a right to know who else had a hand,” Assistant United States Attorney Mary Murrane argued. The government wanted the U.S. District Court Justice Dennis Saylor to sentence Greig for 37 months.

Greig’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, argued that the only crime his client was truly guilty of was falling in love with the wrong man and said the government was overzealously seeking to punish Bulger’s paramour because she refused to give up “her friends and family.”

“It is obvious that she is a kind, gentle woman who has literally done nothing bad in her life except fall in love with James Bulger and live with him for 16 years until his arrest,” Reddington told the court.

The judge was unmoved.

“Bulger is a monster," the judge said. “Ms. Greig is not remorseful. She is not apologetic. She is not trying to distance herself from Bulger. She is not inclined to change her behavior. She’s an adult she knows the rules. She brought this entirely upon herself."

As for “her only crime here is being loyal to Whitey Bulger, and that she loves him,” the judge added, “I hardly know what to say to that. It’s hard to imagine a less worthy object of love and affection.”

The judge did say he was swayed by Reddington’s argument that the government cut sweetheart deals with Bulger compatriots, including John Martorano, who confessed to killing 20 people but spent just 12 years behind bars.

In addition, a Defendant’s Sentencing Memorandum filed with the court “suggests that the ‘cross reference’ to Bulger’s crimes including murder and RICO violations is a gross due process violation. Greig has pled guilty to a crime of contempt; a non-violent offense.”

The memo also argues that “although the court may consider a virtually unlimited array of facts in determining a fair sentencing, it may not impose a sentence that exceeds the ‘substantively reasonable’ threshold.”

Bulger, 86, is serving a life sentence at a maximum-security prison after a 2013 conviction for 11 murders, racketeering and other federal charges.

Meanwhile, federal officials will hold a public auction in June at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center to sell Bulger’s belongings seized from the Santa Monica hideout where the couple lived for more than a decade, part of a way to recoup some of the $25.2 million forfeiture judgment that came with Bulger’s conviction.

Profits from the weekend auction, which will include a coffee mug shaped like a rat, along with the $822,000 in cash found secreted in the walls of the hideout, will be divided among the families of 20 people killed by the gangster or his associates and among several people he extorted, according to court filings. The guns will not be sold at the event, slated to be held from June 24 to June 26, according to court records.

Those victims will also divide Bulger’s Social Security payments and any cash seized from safe deposit boxes and bank accounts uncovered in England and Ireland connected to Bulger.

Three people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said a fellow inmate with Mafia ties was being investigated for the slaying at the US Penitentiary Hazelton.

Bulger’s brother, John, said in a brief telephone interview Tuesday that the family had not been notified of his death.

James (Whitey) Bulger, the South Boston mobster and F.B.I. informer who was captured after 16 years on the run and finally brought to justice in 2013 for a murderous reign of terror that inspired books, films and a saga of Irish-American brotherhood and brutality, was found beaten to death on Tuesday in a West Virginia prison. He was 89.  ::snipping3:: ::snipping3:: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/30/obituaries/whitey-bulger-dead.html
