Wed Aug 14, 2013

More than 20 Virginia State Police officers, 15 vehicles, dogs and ATVs have converged today on the home of Randy Taylor off U.S. 29 in Nelson County in the search for 17-year-old Alexis Murphy.

Taylor was arrested Sunday and charged with abducting Murphy, who was last seen Aug. 3.

Alexis Murphy kidnapping suspect Randy Taylor may be linked to Samantha Clarke abduction
6:08 PM, Aug 13, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (WUSA9) -- Handcuffed and with his legs shackled, 48-year-old Randy Taylor of Lovingston, Va., was appointed a public defender to handle the most serious criminal charge he has faced. Abduction.

The FBI believes he kidnapped 17-year-old Alexis Murphy of Nelson County, Virginia.

Detectives tell WDBJ7 that they were both seen at a Lovingston gas station on August 3, the day of her disappearance.

Surveillance video caught them both there separately but during the same time frame.

<snipped>

Nineteen-year-old Samantha Clarke of Orange, Virginia disappeared in September of 2010. She had recently met Randy Taylor, who officials say called her at least five times in the hours before she disappeared.

<snipped>

Looking for clues in the Alexis Murphy disappearance, FBI agents searched Randy Taylor's home and the woods along Route 29 near Lovingston. They removed a camper, bags of evidence, and Taylor's camouflage-wrapped suburban truck.

The clue which may have lead the FBI to Taylor was surveillance video from that Liberty Gas station in Lovingston where he lives. Both Taylor and Alexis Murphy were seen in the video, taken the day she disappeared.

Attorney for Alexis Murphy abduction suspect says drug dealer saw teen last
UPDATED: 07:07 AM EDT Aug 15, 2013

WDBJ7's Chris Hurst spoke with Charlottesville attorney Mike Hallahan Wednesday night who says Randy Taylor was not the last person to be seen with missing 17-year-old Alexis Murphy; and this all centers allegedly around a marijuana deal.

Hallahan, who represents Taylor, says Murphy met Taylor at the car wash where he worked last month. Murphy noticed Taylor was smoking marijuana and they talked about it.

Then, according to Hallahan, on August 3 Murphy saw Taylor again at the Liberty gas station in Lovingston and they again talked about cannabis.

Taylor asked the teenager if she could find him a dealer. The two went to Taylor's home where a black male in his late 20s sold Taylor some weed, Hallahan says. The man and Murphy left the home and that's the last time Taylor saw the 17-year-old, he says.

Randy Taylor's lawyer: Prosecution's case is weak
UPDATED: 01:25 PM EDT Aug 15, 2013

Randy Taylor’s attorney will ask for his client to be granted bond during a hearing next week, WDBJ7 has learned.

Taylor is expected to appear via video conference at 1 p.m. August 22 to ask for bond in Nelson County court. He’s been charged in connection to the disappearance of 17-year-old Alexis Murphy. She has not been seen since August 3

Meanwhile, FBI agents are not at Taylor’s Nelson County home. There is crime scene tape around his home.

Also new Thursday, WDBJ7's Nadine Maeser has learned that on August 7, Judge Leyburn Mosby signed off on a court order to seal all affidavits and search warrants pertaining to Randy Taylor's case and the address of 10506 Thomas Nelson highway.

When you consider the disappearance of Samantha Clarke ... what are the chances that Randy Taylor is not involved in the disappearance of Alexis Murphy?  RT had contact with both young ladies prior to them going missing.

Why did RT not contact authorities earlier regarding his contact with AM on Monday evening?  Could it be that there was DNA belonging to AM found in the camper/home and that is why the world is hearing a fabricated story about a connection.

Alexis Murphy Update: Lawyer for man accused of abducting missing Va. teen says disappearance may be tied to drug deal

<snipped>

Randy Allen Taylor's court-appointed lawyer, Michael Hallahan, maintained his client's innocence Wednesday as investigators returned to Taylor's Lovingston property.

Hallahan alleged that Taylor ran into the 17-year-old at a gas station Aug. 3, the day she disappeared, CBS affiliate WTVR reports, and that Taylor asked the teen if she could find him a drug dealer. It wasn't the first encounter between the two, the lawyer alleged - nearly a month before, while Taylor was working at a local carwash, he says Murphy started talking to Taylor after she noticed he was smoking marijuana.

The night Murphy vanished, Hallahan said the 17-year-old was at Taylor's camper with another man. The lawyer said Taylor bought marijuana from the man and smoked it with him, and that the two left in separate cars.

Hallahan said Taylor didn't know the man, but he was described as a black male in his early 20s, wearing cornrows and driving a 1990s sedan with 22-inch rims.

Authorities have said Murphy was last seen around 7 p.m. Aug 3, when she left her home to go shopping in Lynchburg. Her car was found in the parking lot of a multiplex in Charlottesville three days later.

After finding a strand of Murphy's hair in Taylor's camper eight days after she was last seen, authorities arrested him on an abduction charge,  Hallahan said.

Considering Randy Taylor was not arrested until following the discovery of a strand of Alexis Murphy's hair ... it appears that RT failed to inform authorities that AM had been in his camper.  Why?  Could it be that a good cleaning of the camper afforded RT assurance that no DNA or evidence associated with AM would be found?  He could then claim with confidence there had been no contact?

Police probe Va. teen's disappearance; suspect claims innocence
August 16, 2013

<snipped>

Randy Taylor, 48, was seen on the video and was arrested in her abduction Sunday, police told CNN affiliate WRC-TV, but Taylor's attorney, Michael Hallahan, told WVIR that Taylor was arrested because they found one of Alexis' hairs in his camper.

<snipped>

Taylor saw the girl the night she disappeared, the lawyer said. They were both parked at the gas pumps, and Alexis made a reference to smoking marijuana, Hallahan said. Taylor told her he'd like some marijuana, the attorney said.

"She said, 'I know a guy.' She told him to meet at another location in Lovingston and they rode up there in both cars," the lawyer told the station.

That "guy," Alexis and Taylor all took separate cars to Taylor's camper in Lovingston, where Taylor bought $60 worth of marijuana. The men smoked and drank together, but Murphy did not, the attorney said.

Alexis and the unidentified man left before sundown, and that was the last Taylor saw of either of them, Hallahan told WVIR.

Hallahan further told the station there is DNA evidence of the unidentified man -- in the form of a 12-ounce Icehouse bottle -- in the camper.

Family still hopes to find missing teen Alexis Murphy
By CNN Staff
updated 11:24 AM EDT, Sat August 17, 2013

(CNN) -- Having not seen or heard from her daughter in two weeks, Alexis Murphy's mother said in a CNN interview she is keeping strong with support from family and friends.

"A mother would know if her daughter is really gone, but I still have hope," Laura Murphy said.

Alexis Murphy was last seen at a gas station earlier this month. Police have arrested a suspect in her abduction, but the suspect's attorney told a CNN affiliate his client split ways with the 17-year-old after a drug deal.

 ::snipping3::

Alexis was last seen wearing a pink blouse, floral spandex pants and brown boots, according to WRC. She was carrying a gray purse. Her 2003 Nissan Maxima was found August 6 in the parking lot of a movie theater near Charlottesville.

The teen's aunt, Trina Murphy, told CNN she bought a car from a dealership where Taylor used to work, "which is really eerie."

Another relative, Angela Taylor, described her as a "girly girl" and told WVIR that the volleyball player had just taken her senior pictures and was looking at colleges.

"She was just looking forward to everything, excited for everything, and for this to happen is just completely out of character for her," Taylor told the station.

New development in case of missing teen Alexis Murphy
August 19, 2013

This weekend police pulled over a car that matched a description given by Randy Taylor, the man police arrested for abducting Murphy.

The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to CBS 6 News that a Be on the Lookout (BOLO) order was issued over the weekend for a maroon Chevy with large rims.

That vehicle description matches the one Taylor gave police, along with a description of a man he claims was the last person to see Alexis alive.

“The suspect in this case Taylor, provided this generic information, that does not meant that it’s true,” said retired Chesterfield Police Captain Steve Neal.

CBS 6 News asked investigators if they were actively searching for a man and car based on Taylor’s information, but they would not confirm it.

However, Louisa officials confirmed that deputies did pull over a car matching that description in the county over the weekend. Deputies took down the driver’s information and forwarded it to investigators in Nelson County. Those investigators confirm that they plan to talk to the driver.

“That tells me that they weren’t that interested in talking to him if they were, they would have gone to the scene and tried to get the information immediately,” said Neal.

Taylor Expected in Court Thursday
Aug 20, 2013

<snipped>

Randy Taylor still sits in a cell in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, but is scheduled to be back in a Nelson County courtroom on Thursday.

Taylor was originally scheduled to appear by video, however just as the case in his arraignment, he will appear in person.

Last week, Taylor's court appointed attorney said the case against his client is "weak" and he hopes the bond hearing will force the prosecution to reveal more of the evidence against Taylor.

Monday, ABC 13 met exclusively with a Nelson County land owner who showed what he calls suspicious tire tracks on his property.

The property is only a few miles away from a convenience store where residents tell me they saw Randy Taylor in the days after Alexis Murphy's disappearance.

Many viewers have been asking via Facebook why investigators haven't searched the area yet.

Investigators do say they plan to search the property, however.

The property is more than 500 acres, though, and investigators say a search that size takes a lot of people and search dogs, plus lots of time to plan

Investigators Searching Piece of Land Connected to Alexis Murphy Disappearance
Posted: Aug 22, 2013 8:54 AM PST
By Carleigh Griffeth - bio | email

Nelson Co., VA – Officials in Nelson County are searching a piece of land in connection with the disappearance investigation of Alexis Murphy. The search started around 9 a.m. Thursday and could last into the evening.

They're at the same property investigators visited last week where they found tire tracks. Monday, officials took a casting of that track to compare to the tires on Taylor's truck. The land owner says that officials confirmed the track on his property did NOT match that of suspect Randy Taylor's truck.

But that doesn't mean the investigation here is over.

Investigators do not want us to release the exact location of the property and we are not revealing the property owner's name, but after seeing our coverage of Alexis Murphy's disappearance, the owner decided to take a look at his property just to see if there was anything out of place.

Still, a search team of about a dozen people took four four-wheelers and four police dogs onto that land Thursday.

Randy Taylor Denied Bond in Hearing
Posted: Aug 22, 2013 3:20 PM PDT

Nelson Co., VA - The suspect in Alexis Murphy's disappearance has been denied bond.

Randy Taylor did appear in a Nelson County courtroom Thursday. His attorney asked for a secured bond, arguing there was not enough evidence to deny him.

Nelson County Commonwealth's attorney, Anthony Martin, asked that the hearing be closed to the public when sensitive material came up. Judge Ellen White reached a compromise with Martin, allowing him to close the hearing when he deemed the information to be too sensitive to be released to the public. But cameras were not allowed in court.

Taylor's attorney Mike Hallahan, maintained there was not enough information to warrant a denial of bond, let alone an abduction charge. But Taylor, who appeared in court in a gray and black striped jumpsuit, and had shackles on his hands and feet, will remain in jail.

Judge denies bond for man accused of abducting Alexis Murphy
Posted on: 2:51 pm, August 22, 2013

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) — A judge denied bond Thursday afternoon for the man accused of abducting a missing 17-year-old Nelson County teen.

CBS 6 News’ Sandra Jones reported that the the judge denied bond based on the prosecution’s argument that Randy Taylor is a danger to the community and a flight risk.

Additionally, prosecutors also brought up that Taylor had failed to pay $600 in restitution for a 2005 arson conviction.  Albemarle County charged him with the probation violation for failure to pay, which Taylor’s attorney called suspicious.

The judge also waived a preliminary hearing. As a result, a grand jury will weigh the evidence and decide whether to hand down an indictment against Taylor on Sept. 26
.

Benefit Cruise-In to Help Alexis Murphy’s Family
Aug 23, 2013

A central Virginia auto club is raising money to benefit the family of a missing Nelson County teen. Organizers say it is a way to show their support as the search for Alexis Murphy continues.

<snipped>

The Street Elements Auto Club is hosting a benefit cruise-in at the Ebony and Ivory Field in Roseland Saturday. Organizers say the event will be like a car show but without trophies, and are encouraging people to bring their cars and bikes out to the lot.

Donations will be accepted and all proceeds will benefit Alexis' immediate family.

"We're a close-knit community and just knowing them for all of my life, it felt like the right thing to do," said Brian Coffey, vice president of Street Elements Auto Club.

The cruise-in will also feature vendors selling food and drinks and Alexis Murphy T-shirts and special stickers will be available for purchase. A Charlottesville rapper who wrote a song to help in the search for Alexis will also be performing.

The cruise-in will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Could it be that the finding of AM's cell phone motivated RT to bow and reveal that truth encompassing the evening of August 3rd?  Maybe there was a plea deal ... a plea deal that would afford a measure of closure for AM's family.

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A cell phone recovered during the investigation into the disappearance of missing teenager Alexis Murphy has been positively identified as belonging to the 17-year-old girl, the FBI released Tuesday.

“Since this is an on-going sensitive investigation, where evidentiary items and search information is sealed; no further discussion will be entertained,” the FBI said in a statement. “This sole release of information is only being made to advise the public that we no longer need assistance looking for that one item.”
Murphy disappeared on August 3.

“In order to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure that Mr. Randy Allen Taylor gets a fair trial in Nelson County, Virginia, absolutely no further information will be released about this investigation,” the FBI statement continued.
Taylor, arrested last month, is charged with abduction.

On Saturday, search crews were looking in and around the Rockfish River off Route 29 for clues. Charlottesville-area media reported crews found an item of clothing during that search. Investigators would not confirm why they were at that location and what may have been found.

Police probe Va. teen's disappearance; suspect claims innocence

Randy Taylor, 48, was seen on the video and was arrested in her abduction Sunday, police told CNN affiliate WRC-TV, but Taylor's attorney, Michael Hallahan, told WVIR that Taylor was arrested because they found one of Alexis' hairs in his camper.

<snipped>

Suspect in Teen's Abduction Has Link to Another Missing Person Case
Aug. 14, 2013

The man charged with the abduction of a Virginia teenager who is still missing, was one of the last people to speak with another teen before she disappeared in 2010, according to authorities.

Samantha Clarke was 19 when she went missing on the night of Sept. 13 or early Sept. 14, 2010, in Orange, Va. Authorities said one of the last people Clarke talked to before she disappeared was Randy Taylor, now 48, who was arraigned Tuesday in the abduction of Alexis Murphy, 17, who was last seen on Aug. 3.

During a brief appearance in Nelson County Juvenile and Domestic Court in Virginia, Taylor was assigned a public defender but did not enter a plea on an abduction charge in the case of Murphy, who still hasn't been found.

"As Randy Taylor is someone that Samantha spoke with immediately prior to her disappearance, he remains someone we are very interested in learning more about," Diana H. Wheeler, Orange County Commonwealth's Attorney, said in a statement.

Wheeler said authorities in Orange, where Clarke was last seen, are coordinating with their counterparts in Nelson County, Va., to "share whatever information they have to which may be helpful."

Crews in the search for a missing Virginia teen discovered a red sweater caught beneath a rock in the Rockfish River Saturday, timesdispatch.com reports.

The recent discovery of the sweater prompted a quick call to investigators, who quickly arrived at the scene and tucked the sweater into an evidence bag.

The rescue team was part of a 50-member contingent searching along U.S. 29, the Rockfish River, and other back roads in Nelson County - areas where witnesses said they may have seen Randy Taylor, who was arrested in connection to Murphy's disappearance. Taylor faces one count of abduction.

Could it be that the new person of interest in the disappearance of Alexis Murphy be the same person who was stopped on August 19th driving a maroon Chevy with large rims ... the same person and vehicle that Randy Taylor described during interrogations with investigators?

Alexis Murphy abduction suspect heads to Grand Jury in Nelson

NELSON, VA (WWBT) - A Grand Jury in Nelson County will decide if Randy Taylor will be indicted in the abduction of Alexis Murphy.

Randy Taylor says he is not the one to blame. He is leading investigators to a new person of interest in the case.

The grand jurors must decide if there is enough evidence, or probable cause, to bring Taylor to trial. Jurors will only consider the charge, not find guilt or innocence.

Taylor is charged with abduction by force.

The Grand Jury meets in Nelson County at 9 a.m.

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – A Nelson County grand jury indicted Randy Taylor on two felony charges, according to the Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. One for the abduction of Alexis Murphy and one connected to the theft of an ATV.

Taylor, who remains locked up at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Jail, is due back in court next month.

Surveillance video at a Lovingston gas station captured images Murphy, 17, on Saturday, Aug. 3. That was the last time Alexis Murphy was seen.

Taylor, 48, was arrested Aug. 12 on abduction charges in connection with Alexis’ disappearance.

Taylor told police he was not the last person to see Murphy alive.

Taylor’s attorney told CBS 6 News in August that her disappearance might be linked to a drug deal. He said Taylor, Alexis and an unidentified drug dealer met at Taylor’s Nelson Highway home.  After buying $60 in marijuana Taylor insisted Alexis and the drug dealer left.  Taylor said that was the last time he saw the teen.

This week investigator David Brooks said they’ve contacted a new “person of interest” in the case. He said it was a “normal lead” that they were following up on, but could not provide specifics.

ROANOKE, VA -

These two mothers came together to give each other support even over the phone. They share the sorrow of missing their two young daughters.

"We need her back bad," Laura Murphy, Alexis' Mother says.

"We're sending you lots of prayers and all the strength we have and I can't wait to see you and your big gorgeous family on Friday," Gil Harrington, Morgan's mother tells Laura over the phone.

Gil Harrington says she knows what it's like for Laura Murphy to be missing her 17-year old daughter Alexis. Her daughter, Morgan, was missing for more than three months back in 2009. That was before her family found out the deviating news, that Morgan had been abducted and murdered.

"I recognize the shattered look on the Murphy family faces. I know what it's like and the phone would ring and you're hoping its a call and you're afraid too," Harrington says.

"It's been wonderful just talking to Gil and being a part of the 'Save the Next Girl.' It's giving me strength," Laura Murphy says. "We are doing the right thing and working with her has been wonderful."

These two mothers are now working together to 'Save the Next Girl,' a campaign originally started by the Harrington family.

Girl's blood in suspect's trailer, Virginia prosecutor tells jury

LOVINGSTON, Virginia (Reuters) - The blood of a missing 17-year-old Virginia girl along with signs of a violent struggle were found in the trailer of a man charged with her murder, a prosecutor said in opening arguments of the handyman's trial on Friday.

But a defense lawyer for the accused man, Randy Taylor, 48, said there was no evidence of either a murder or an abduction.

Taylor is accused of abducting Alexis Murphy, a high school senior, in August 2013 while she was on a shopping trip, and then killing her. The case drew national attention and has riveted the close-knit mountainous region of western Virginia.

Nelson County Commonwealth's Attorney Anthony Martin told jurors that Murphy's blood was found on a shirt that had been balled up and shoved under a couch in Taylor's trailer.

Martin said her hair extensions were found in the shirt, and a strand of Murphy's hair was discovered on Taylor's pillow, according to DNA evidence.

Murphy's torn fingernail and part of an earring were found in the trailer's carpeting, Martin said.

"All of this will show that a violent struggle occurred," he told the jury of seven women and five men.

Commonwealth’s attorney will order ‘scientific testing’ to rule out Jesse Matthew in Alexis Murphy case
October 2, 2014

NELSON COUNTY, Va. — The Nelson County commonwealth’s attorney says additional “scientific testing” will take place following a request from the lawyer of Randy Taylor, the man found guilty of murdering Alexis Murphy.

This comes after Taylor’s attorney sent a letter to Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Anthony Martin asking for investigators check for a potential link between Hannah Graham abduction suspect Jesse Matthew Jr. and the missing Nelson County teen.

Mike Hallahan was first to confirm to CBS 6 reporter Laura French that he has asked Martin to order new DNA tests in the Alexis Murphy-Randy Taylor case. Additionally, Hallahan asked that investigators probe Matthew’s and Murphy’s social media accounts to see if they had any contact.

BREAKING #RandyTaylor's attorney asking CA for additional DNA testing and review of social media in #AlexisMurphy case #JesseMatthew tie?

— Laura French (@lfrenchnews) October 2, 2014

Hallahan told French Thursday morning that he based the request on multiple reports that allege Matthew is “responsible or linked” to the disappearance of multiple young women across the state.

“This is not a fishing expedition, but rather this request is based upon the evidence presented at Randy Taylor’s trial and based upon those new developments relating to Matthew in the news,” Hallahan wrote to the Nelson County commonwealth’s attorney.

Furthermore, Hallahan wrote that Murphy’s family members and friends testified that she would have never gone to Taylor’s home without someone accompanying her. Along those lines, friends testified that she had turned down requests for company the night she went missing which led to speculation that she was going on a date.

“Alexis Murphy’s friends testified that he liked older men (Matthew being about 12 years older) and she was very active on social media, having thousands of friends and followers,” Hallahan wrote.

Additionally, Hallahan argued that no physical evidence was found linking Taylor to the car Murphy was last spotted driving, which was recovered in Charlottesville. Prosecutors had argued that Taylor drove Murphy’s vehicle to Charlottesville and then took a cab home.

“There was however some DNA samples collected from the car’s interior that were never identified.”

As a result, Hallahan wants Matthew’s DNA sample compared to the samples recovered from the car Murphy was driving.

“Alexis Murphy’s friends testified that he liked older men (Matthew being about 12 years older) and she was very active on social media, having thousands of friends and followers.”

However, Martin maintains that the commonwealth’s attorney’s Office, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, FBI and Virginia State Police have found no credible evidence linking Jesse Leroy Matthew, Jr. to the Alexis Murphy case.

Alexis Murphy’s aunt says focus is on Hannah Graham, not guys in jail
October 3, 2014

Nelson County, Va. – Alexis Murphy’s aunt said parts of a letter sent by Randy Taylor’s attorney asking investigators to check for a potential link between Hannah Graham abduction suspect Jesse Matthew Jr. and the missing Nelson County teen offended her and her family. That’s according to a report from WTVR.

Taylor was convicted earlier this year of kidnapping and killing 17-year-old Alexis Murphy. Her body has not been found.

Taylor’s attorney, Michael Hallahan, asked Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Andrew Martin to order additional DNA testing to see if Matthew, the man accused of abducting missing UVa. student Hannah Graham, has any link to Murphy’s case.

“There’s no reason for us to think that anyone else was involved,” Trina Murphy said.
 ::snipping3::
Martin maintains that there is no credible evidence linking Matthew to Murphy’s abduction. Regardless, he said he will order scientific testing to rule out any speculation, WTVR reports.

“I don’t think that the DNA testing will come back to show that Jesse Matthew’s DNA was in the car,” Trina Murphy said.

She said that parts of the letter written from Hallahan to Martin were offensive. In it, Hallahan wrote that Alexis’ friends testified she liked older men.

“When you’re 17 years old, older men to you are 18, 19, 21, not 32,” said Murphy.

The letter also stated that Randy Taylor never gave the location of Alexis’ body.

“That’s a below the belt hit,” said Trina Murphy. “It really is, it’s very difficult for us as a family to know that Alexis is most likely not with us anymore; but not have closure, not have her body, not being able to go to a place where we’ve laid her to rest.”

Trina said the focus now needs to remain on the search for Hannah.

“We need to find her and we need to bring her home,” Murphy said. She said that both Taylor and Matthew are behind bars, but the search is on for Graham.

Attorney calls for reexamination of Alexis Murphy case
Hallahan wants Matthew's DNA compared

October 8, 2014

Attorney Michael Hallahan requested that Nelson County Commonwealth Attorney Anthony Martin re-examine DNA samples and social media activity from the Alexis Murphy missing persons case. The request comes in light of new evidence linking Jesse Matthew — a suspect being held on an abduction charge in the investigation of missing second-year College student Hannah Graham — with the case of Morgan Harrington, a Virginia Tech student who went missing in 2009 and whose body was found in a farm in January 2010.

A judge sentenced Randy Taylor, whom Hallahan represents, to two life-terms in prison in July for Murphy’s abduction and murder, and discussed a 20-year sentence in exchange for information leading to Murphy’s location.

“The offer that was made to him prior and during the trial was 20 years in exchange for her location — not a body, but her location,” Hallahan said. “Mr. Taylor maintains to this day that he did not kill Alexis Murphy. He turned that offer down because he did not want to plead guilty when he did not murder anybody.”

Martin has issued multiple statements maintaining there is no evidence to connect Matthew to the Murphy case. But upon request from Taylor’s attorney, Martin has ordered scientific testing to rule out any possible connection.

“At no time did the name Jesse Leroy Matthew, Jr. ever come up by Randy Taylor or Mr. Hallahan until Matthew’s arrest in Hannah Graham several days ago,” Martin said in a statement released Oct. 2. “The Commonwealth will make sure that scientific testing is done in order to bring closure to the speculation.”

Taylor stated Murphy left his camper, where her DNA was found, with another man, later described as a black man with cornrows. Hallahan’s request is based on this testimony and unidentified DNA samples from Murphy’s car.

“With a high percentage of cases like this in the area that Jesse Matthew was already linked to, it was worth writing a letter asking the commonwealth attorney to request that the state lab compare Jesse Matthew’s DNA to the samples found it Alexis Murphy’s car,” Hallahan said.

Hallahan called for an investigation into Murphy’s social media sites as well. During the case, friends of Murphy testified about her strong social media presence and her interest in older men. Hallahan wants investigators to see if Murphy and Matthew had connections on social media which were not investigated during the case.

“Alexis Murphy had over 1000 followers on Twitter at the time of the investigation, and the law enforcement and FBI did not have any reason to know the name Jesse Matthew,” Hallahan said. “So I asked them to look through the contacts to see if there is a connection.”

Hallahan has also applied for an appeal for the Taylor case based on errors made during the trial. New evidence cannot be brought into the appellate court.

Law Prof. Brandon Garrett said the criminal appeals process usually does not change the results of the sentence or the verdict. Only about one percent of criminal appeals have success in gaining a different outcome.

“Appeals judges do not look at a case with fresh eyes,” Garrett said. “Instead they are quite reluctant to review a ‘cold record’ of a trial that they were not present at and where it was the jury's job to decide the facts. “

Hallahan has tried only two successful appeals in the past 14 years. If Matthew is connected to the Murphy case, Taylor would receive a retrial as opposed to an appeal based on the new evidence.

I am sceptical that Jesse Matthew is connected to the disappearance of Alexis Murphy.  Think about it ...

1.  Alexis' cell phone was located at Randy Taylor's residence.
2.  A T-shirt with Alexis' blood on it was located at Randy Taylor's residence.
3.  Randy Taylor offered to lead investigators to Alexis for a reduced sentence.

However ... when the recent search for Samantha Clark and the upcoming search for Alexis Murphy are considered ... I suspect that maybe BOTH cases may be connected?  Could it be that Randy Taylor is talking.

THE 2010 DISAPPEARANCE OF SAMANTHA CLARKE

UPDATE: Samantha Clarke's Mother Speaks Out as Investigators Again Search Lake
September 11, 2014

Almost four years to the day 19-year-old Samantha Ann Clarke went missing, crews from across Virginia searched a Greene County lake looking for any clues in her disappearance. Clarke's mother says at this point in the case, she wants answers not only from police, but from the man she believes knows where her daughter is. ....

On Thursday, a dozen police forces scoured the lake in Greene Acres subdivision, looking for anything that may tell them what happened to Samantha.

Tinder was surprised when CBS19 told her about Thursday's search, and says over the past four years her daughter's case has not received the attention it deserves.

Tinder thinks there is one person who can help find her daughter; Randy Allen Taylor. Taylor was convicted of killing Nelson County teen Alexis Murphy, and was named a person of interest when Samantha first disappeared.

"Randy Taylor come and picked her up. He called here six times," Tinder said. "Why would you call my daughter six times if you ain't trying to lead her on or try to talk her to come out the house, or try to do something?"

"I know Randy Taylor knows where she is. I don't care what anyone says, I know in my heart where she is," said Tinder

THE 2013 DISAPPEARANCE OF ALEXIS MURPHY

UPDATED: Alexis Murphy's Family Reacts to New Search for Missing Teen
October 21, 2014

Officials in Nelson County have announced they are planning a new search for missing teen Alexis Murphy.

Murphy went missing from her Nelson County home in August 2013, and Randy Taylor was convicted of her murder in May 2014. Her body has never been found.

Detective Billy Mays of the Nelson County Sheriff's Office released this statement following the announcement:

"Our goal has always been to bring Alexis home, and to bring closure to the family."

"They've never stopped searching," Alexis Murphy's aunt, Trina Murphy said Tuesday night, after being informed about the upcoming search.

Trina Murphy and our media partners at Blue Ridge Life Magazine say the search will take place in Orange County in November.

"I'm confident that they have a reason for searching in Orange and we'll just go with that," Trina Murphy said.

Trina says she does not think Jesse Matthew, the man accused of abducting Hannah Graham, had anything to do with the death of Alexis.

"Even if it came out tomorrow that Jesse Matthew was somehow involved," she said, "it doesn't make Randy Taylor any less guilty. All the DNA evidence was found in his trailer. Her blood was on his shirt."

The 5 things people get wrong about Alexis Murphy and Jesse Matthew
October 23, 2014

<snipped>

Here are the five things people keep forgetting:

1. Taylor attempted to implicate another man, saying that man was with Murphy when she left Taylor’s camper. That man was cleared by police. We will not name him because he is not a suspect, but his name is not Jesse Matthew.

2. That man had cornrows, and allegedly sold Alexis Murphy marijuana. Repeat, he distinctly had cornrows, not dreadlocks as Matthew has. Again, that man was questioned by police, and found innocent.

3. That man drove a “burgundy Caprice with 22-inch wheels,” not a burnt orange Chrysler Coupe like Jesse Matthew drove.

4. The surveillance video from Liberty Gas Station the night Alexis Murphy disappeared shows her walking behind the back of an object some say looks like Jesse Matthew’s vehicle. It isn’t.

“FBI and Virginia State Police have re-examined that footage in light of these concerns and are confident that the orange object is not a vehicle, but a portion of a sign hanging from the window,” said Martin.

5.  People are forgetting the list of evidence against Taylor includes a bloody t-shirt found in his camper with Murphy’s DNA, eyelashes and ripped out extensions, her smashed cellphone found on his property and video of the two speaking at Liberty gas station the night she disappeared. That’s a lot of evidence, and wound up being enough for a murder charge.

The Murphy family has gone on record stating that they do not believe Matthew was involved in the disappearance and death of Alexis. Essentially, law enforcement is thoroughly checking all their bases. In addition to Taylor’s DNA, other unknown DNA was found inside Murphy’s vehicle. That evidence will be checked against Matthew’s DNA.

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - As the FBI begins performing DNA testing on the car driven by Alexis Murphy to see if there is any possible connection between Murphy and the suspect in the disappearance of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham Jesse Matthew, the defense team of Randy Taylor is asking that additional analysis be done.

Taylor, who is currently serving time in prison in connection with the disappearance of Murphy, and his lawyer asked that Murphy's social networking account be reviewed to see if there were any connection between Murphy and Matthew.

Nelson County Commonwealth's Attorney Anthony Martin confirmed that both the DNA testing and the social media analysis are ongoing and that those results will be released once they are completed.

Matthew has been recently connected to a 2005 rape that occurred in Fairfax, Virginia.

Over the past month, lawyers for Taylor has asked for additional DNA testing in the case to see if Matthew has indeed had a connection with Murphy.

With those requests, Commonwealth's Attorney Martin has gone on record as saying that, "the evidence on Randy Taylor and Randy Taylor alone in the Alexis Murphy case is clear, the Commonwealth will make sure that scientific testing is done in order to bring closure to the speculation."

Taylor’s attorney also asked Murphy’s car be tested for evidence that could link her to Matthew. There was DNA found in Murphy’s car that did not match Taylor. ...

Murphy’s family members said they did not think the testing would change anything in the case against Randy Taylor.

“I’d be surprised if it did. Honestly, I would be surprised,” Alexis’ aunt Trina Murphy said.

Last month Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Anthony Martin stated there was no evidence Matthew was connected to Murphy’s disappearance.

“In recent days, there has been much discussion in news reports and on social media as to whether or not there is any connection between the case involving Jesse Leroy Matthew, Jr., charged in connection with missing UVa. student Hannah Graham and Randy Allen Taylor who was convicted in May 2014 for abduction with intent to defile and the first degree murder of Alexis Murphy,” Martin wrote on September 24.

Specifically, he said, Matthew Jr. was not the man Taylor tried to “implicate in his trial of being with Alexis Murphy when she left Taylor’s camper in August 2013.” Taylor implicated another man, who was later cleared, Martin said. Martin said neither Matthew’s name nor any vehicle that matched the description of Matthew’s car came up during the Taylor investigation and subsequent.

With those requests, Commonwealth's Attorney Martin has gone on record as saying that, "the evidence on Randy Taylor and Randy Taylor alone in the Alexis Murphy case is clear, the Commonwealth will make sure that scientific testing is done in order to bring closure to the speculation."

Although I don't feel there is a connection . . . the defense must pursue every possibility.  The Commonwealth is doing what it needs to do to squash speculation.  JMO

Randy Taylor's Attorney Requests Analysis of Alexis Murphy's Online History

Bolded by me & I totally agree.
At this time, I don't feel there is a connection either, Sister.  From other articles I've read, Alexis's family seem to feel the person who murdered her is behind bars, that being Randy Taylor.  This must be very difficult for them, like opening old wounds, imo.  I have so much respect for them and for their strength, because they didn't want any plea deals made with Randy Taylor to reduce his sentence in return for revealing the location of Alexis's remains. I hope she can be found in the searches in the next coming months.

When recent searches for Samantha Clark and the upcoming search for Alexis Murphy are considered ...

New search launched for Murphy & Clarke near Randy Taylor's old home

ORANGE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A new search for Alexis Murphy and Samantha Clarke will be near where Randy Taylor used to live in Orange County.

Taylor was also convicted of Alexis Murphy's abduction and murder in May of 2014.

The search will include more than 150 searchers covering more than 200 acres. The Town of Orange Police Chief James Fenwick says Taylor is still a 'person of interest' in Samantha Clarke's disappearance.

Police have said Taylor was one of the last people Clarke associated with before she was never seen again.

"For us, Randy Taylor is a key person. He is one of a group of people who Samantha Clarke associated with prior to her disappearance," Chief Fenwick said,

The area being searched Sunday has been searched before. Cheif Fenwick says four years after Clarke disappeared, they are re-examining information and hitting this area with a different approach and new technology.

However, according to Alexis Murphy's family, they were not notified about Orange Police talking to the media on Sunday.

In fact, they had been told it was going to be a private search.

"I think if I were to mention Samantha Clarke without mentioning Randy Taylor and Alexis Murphy, then that would be a disservice not only to Ms. Murphy's family, but to the case in general," Chief Fenwick said..

Orange authorities planning search Sunday for Samantha Ann Clarke, Alexis Murphy
November 13, 2014

Town of Orange Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are planning a “pretty large operation” Sunday to sweep the county in hopes of discovering the whereabouts two missing women, town police Chief James Fenwick said.

The two agencies are still working out the details of the search for Samantha Ann Clarke, of Orange, and Alexis Murphy, of Nelson, he said.

In October, Orange authorities said Nelson County authorities and other specialized search units also would be a part of the search.

“We’re revisiting some previously explored areas,” Fenwick said. “We’ve been working with the Alexis Murphy case from the very beginning, so [we’ll use] information that’s come up in that investigation … to the best of abilities to further our own case.”

Police give statement on Alexis Murphy, Samantha Clarke searches
POSTED: 07:37 AM EST Nov 16, 2014    UPDATED: 08:48 AM EST Nov 16, 2014

Police held a news conference on Sunday morning about missing teens Alexis Murphy and Samantha Clarke.

Chief James Fenwick of the Town of Orange Police Department says police are going to be searching an area that they have searched before. It's an area Randy Taylor would have been familiar with and would have had access to.

"Every lead we pursue in these cases, we're looking at both cases," Fenwick says.

At least 150 people are expected to search for Alexis Murphy and Samantha Clarke.

Investigators said nature worked against them the last time they searched this area. Now they hope to use aircraft similar to what was used in the Hannah Graham search.

The greatest possible outcome for these searches would be to find both missing teens, according to police.

"We're out here beating the bushes, seeing what we can find," says Fenwick.

Investigators in Nelson County haven't found the body of Alexis Murphy a year-and-a-half after she went missing.

Now her aunt, Trina Murphy, is spreading a message of safety and awareness to teens.

"I am the reality that this can happen to anybody at any time," said Murphy, an advocate of Help Save the Next Girl.

This is the last place Trina Murphy imagined she'd be now, standing on this stage with law enforcement and advocates of stopping domestic violence.

"I followed Morgan Harrington's case very closely. Her mother spoke to me whenever I would see her speaking and not in a million years did I ever think I'd be in the same position as her," Murphy said.
