Title: Solomon Northrup and Big Government

'12 Years a Slave'

Quote
Born in July 1808 in Minerva, New York, Solomon Northup grew up a free man, working as a farmer and violinist while having a family. He was lured south and kidnapped in 1841 and enslaved for more than a decade, enduring horribly violent conditions. Northup was freed in 1853 with help from colleagues and friends. His experiences are the subject of the book and film 12 Years a Slave.

Background

Solomon Northup was born in July 1808 in Minerva, New York. His father Mintus had once been enslaved but was released upon his former master's death, and hence Solomon and his older brother Joseph grew up knowing freedom. Northup worked with his father on a farm growing up, and also took to books and playing the violin.

Establishes Family and Farm

On Christmas Day in 1829, Northup wed Anne Hampton, a woman of multi-racial descent.

With all the discussion I've read, no where do I hear anyone say things like 'I didn't know there were 'free' black people.'  'I didn't know that a free black family could prosper any where in America before the Civil War.'

It often seems to me that some like to demonize the evil of slavery onto every white American, every white ancestor, every every state, the founders, and all American history...ignoring the facts.

There was no cell phones, no video,  no twitter, no fast cars or planes...why didn't Solomon Northrup do more to abolish slavery before his ordeal?  Was he just like the whites of his time?

I believe historically, that for most of human history the masses lived under some for of slavery or bondage.

I haven't read or heard anything to suggest that people knew there were black people living in freedom.

Why is that?

Those who found slavery to their liking, wanted to expand it.  STATES were free to choose.  Expanding slavery was a hot topic of the day.  Should the new states and territories out 'west' be free or slave states?

How different would the nation be today if slavery existed in every state at the founding?  Had expanded to every state and territory?

Why is there never a movie about the free black and multiracial people?  Surely they existed?

If there were no free black people would there be a movie "12 Years a Slave"?

Solomon Northrup was a farmer.  What would he think of big governments involvement in farming?  Eco activists?  Illegal immigration?

"Facing drought, California farmers rally against regulations limiting water supplies"

"Regulations undermine best farm practices"

Quote
Fewer farms mean fewer sources for that food and possibly higher prices. On the other hand, larger farms have brought about greater efficiencies, higher yields and have helped keep prices at reasonable levels.

To maintain the farms we have and continue our wonderful productivity, we need to make it easier for farmers to farm and for more young people to want to go into the business. But it seems like we are doing just the opposite.

More and more government regulations, harassment by animal rights activists, law suits by environmental groups and media publicity that tends to be anti-farming all are part of the problem.

Taking a look at government regulations, here in Ohio we can expect more regulations on fertilizer application. A bill has already passed the Senate and is being considered by the House. It would require any farm operator applying fertilizer on 50 acres or more of land to take training and be certified. Records would be required and kept for at least two years documenting how much was applied, what kind and where.

Farmers are already required to take training and get an applicator's license to apply restricted pesticides.

EPA is proposing more Agricultural Protection Standards regulations. They would require workers to be trained every year instead of every five and records kept about the training. They propose about a dozen changes under the pesticide application section of the regulations.

Out in Washington State, there is a court case that has big implications for dairy farmers across the country. An issue involving the Safe Drinking Water Act against four dairy farmers was filed by EPA. The situation was resolved about a year ago, but then a group of environmental attorneys filed suit under the Federal Resource Conservation Act (RCRA).

Imagine if Northrup and Obama had a chat...

Could Obama look Northrup in the eye and defend big government?  Corporatism?  TRILLIONS in debt?  Debt bondage heaped onto the backs of generations of Americans?

My vision of the conversation -

~~~~~~~~~~
Obama - let me tell you about the great things we have lined up for your future.  A 'Social Security' system.  In my time, government confiscates about 15% of the wages and salary of every American.  It started at just 1% of the first $300 in earnings and today, the sky is the limit.  We advertise that it's in the 'Social Security Trust Fund'.  No one knows where the money is today, Congress and the President have been spending it for generations.  It's a pay as you go 'ponzi' kind of plan, we need to shore it up by legalizing 10's of millions of illegal aliens and opening our borders to millions more each year.  No worries - we'll give them welfare.  You may not know what 'welfare' is, let me explain.  We give them free food, free housing, free education, free phones, spending money, let them gamble it away, spend on anything they like.  They never have to work and they get a bonus for every child they bring into the world.  They can also work with bogus identities, and collect even more in 'credits' and payments made through bogus tax returns.
Northrup - How are you paying for this system?  Where is the money coming from?
Obama - Well, we just keep borrowing more money from our enemies.  Enemies of all races, ethnic backgrounds, religions.  It's all good.  We just keep heaping all this debt onto future generations.  Both political parties take care of their friends, political donors, and welfare recipients who vote.  No voter id needed.  ID is just for returns at the store, entering a union vote, and things like Democrat political events.  ID for important things, not for voting.  I have almost doubled the debt and I'm not done yet.  I have three years to go.  It was immoral when the Republicans did it.  I'm a black man, a Democrat, a leftist, and it's not immoral when I do it.  Both parties take turns.  Its a great system.
How do we pay for it?  Both parties stay up late thinking up new taxes, new regulations, new services (like Obamacare) that are forced onto the backs of working Americans and future generations.  Our children are born with this debt hanging around their necks like a millstone.  They can never pay it off, never be free of it, and we will continue to find new ways to confiscate their labor, wealth, inheritance, and make it harder for Americans to prosper.
At the same time, we are protecting the biggest banks and companies from failure.  We give them money to 'create' jobs and never claw it back.  We have a central bank, actually a big private bank that wheels and deals and prints new money all hidden from the people.  We had a big depression, lasted over a decade that destroyed families, farms, businesses, and people.  Today, I'm proud to say, I'm helping another.  More Americans in poverty than in decades, higher never ending taxes.
Northrup - Ahhh...we fought a war for freedom over 1% tax the British imposed.  How much of my labor would you be taking?  40%?  100%?  My kids too?  Is this the new face of 'freedom' for every American?  How is this living free?  Why did you need a central bank?  Did it cause the great depression?  In my day, downturns didn't last so long.
Obama - the big banks bring about change.  They fool people into thinking that everyone can afford a home and should have one.  They foreclose periodically.  Millions lose jobs.  Big banks get bigger.  Big companies get bigger.  Everyone moves jobs to China, India, and other low wage places.  In fact today, they want to start processing dead chickens in China due the cheap cost of labor.  Yup.  We have Obamacare, which is cheap at $20,000 for families.  It helps the medical industry create massive profits with $1000 a month drugs, million dollar a year treatments, all funded by other families and borrowing from our enemies.
Yup, lots to look forward to in the future.
Northrup - Ah, why don't Americans keep the fruit of their labor?  Why is it spend on lavish  entertainment by the ruling class?  The masters?  Lavish vacations and homes by the ruling class and masters?
What happened to the American dream?  Every man, woman, and child keeping the fruit of their labor?  Being free to choose their path in life?
Based on my imagination and opinions
~~~~~~~~~~~~

How would Northrup view the never ending taxes, regulations, bailouts, and forced purchase of things like Obamacare?

Welfare?  In the olden days if you didn't make it in America, you returned to your country of origin.  Today, the welfare state and lax laws seem to be a never ending invitation to come and take...returning nothing.

If you're an American family, being nudged into corrupt mega cities, how is Northrups plantation experience different from the crime and ghetto lifestyle?  Where would you run?

Did masses of slave run away and collapse the plantation system?  How far could they run before they were captured and returned?

Is the plantation system that different today?  The master has mastered the language of making the plantation system palatable?

The founding of America was a great experiment in human history.  Imagine a place where for the first time millions could reap the fruit of their labor and keep it.

Imagine big government, masters, and ruling class staying up late to steal, tax, confiscate that labor from working people.

What is wrong with our government today?  Why aren't states fighting further enslavement of their citizens?

What if no one was there for Northrup?  No one in his time kept abolition alive?  If there was no abolition movement?

How could Obama look Northrup in the eye and say "You didn't plow that row of cotton."  "I have to make sure the folks behind you (the master, his family, and overseers) are taken care of."

Northrup had free housing, food, medical care, clothing, and other benefits from the master.

Anyone think Northrup would prefer the free stuff?  Or, would he prefer keeping the fruit of his own labor?  The opportunity to prosper and better his lot in life?

What is wrong with our government today?

Where are the great role models for all of America's children?

Mary Ann Shadd

Quote
Born to free parents in Wilmington, Delaware, Mary Ann Shadd was the eldest of 13 children. She was educated by Quakers and later taught throughout the northeastern states. Following in the footsteps of her activist parents, who were part of the Underground Railroad, Shadd pursued the path taken by those heading north to freedom in Canada. Settling in Windsor, she wrote educational booklets outlining the advantages of Canada for settlers willing to work and the need for living within one's means. She set up an integrated school in Windsor that was open to all who could afford to attend (education was not publicly provided at that time). She moved to St. Catharines and then Toronto, where she met and married widower Thomas Cary. To promote information about the successes of Black people living in freedom in Canada, she began the Provincial Freeman newspaper, becoming the first Black woman in North America to publish a newspaper, although at first she had to have a man stand in for her as the apparent publisher.

Prior to returning to the US, Shadd obtained Canadian citizenship. In 1851, she was the only woman to attend the First Convention of Colored Freemen held outside of the US. Then she worked as a recruitment agent to support the Union side during the American Civil War. Shadd moved to Washington, DC, where she taught, then pursued law studies and became the first Black woman to complete this degree at Howard University. She joined efforts to gain women's suffrage (the vote) and was herself the first Black woman to vote in a national election.

She started an integrated school?  A pay school?  At a time when free public education didn't exist?  She managed to graduate from Harvard without free money from some government stash?  Affirmative action?

What is the legacy of today's leaders?  More people on food stamps?  Failing public education?  Growing ignorance and illiteracy among the young?  Confiscation of labor?

Could Obama look Shadd in the eye and explain unions?  Closing charter and voucher schools?  Failing public schools?  Destruction of families?  TRILLIONS in debt bondage?

How would Shadd look upon today's American black leadership?

Imagine a time when a shoe maker could afford private boarding school for their daughter.

The Obama's send their daughters to a private Quaker school too.

How many working people could afford the tuition at the Obama girls private Quaker school?  The elite school of ruling class parents?

What would Solomon Northrup think about education in the public school?

Three catered meals and day and snacks?

Sex demonstrations in grade school?  Sexual education and masturbation curriculum?

Free birth control?

Expanding the number of courses and dropping the important things like reading, writing, cursive, science, and math?

Is today's public education like the literacy tests of the past?  The new 'poll tax'?  Educating idiots?  Making illiterates with fancy credentials and no knowledge?

Are private for profit schools the enemy of public education?

In the past, they taught for advancement.  Reading, writing, cursive, science, and math.

Today, what is the agenda?  Sexual orientation, sexual orientation and families, sexual orientation and masturbation...what does sex have to do with education?  The Olympics?

Diversity?  It seems like we live diversity every day in this country.  Social justice?  How did people in the past make it and contribute without affirmative action?  Disparity cash and disparity advantages?  Advantages to illegal aliens?

When do every day people come first?  People who work and don't get to enjoy the fruits of their labor?

Solomon Northrup like those of his generation (of all races, mixes, and backgrounds) was a self made man.  He was helped along the way by people who valued REAL education and were willing to pay for it.  They kept the fruit of their labor.  Government did not steal to buy votes, reward failure, and reward the ruling class and it's allies.

What would Northrup say?  'I work hard on the farm every day, 12 or more hours depending on the season.  My family works hard every day too.  We all pitch in to support our family.  We give to charity too.   You want what?  50% of my labor?  Gonna raise taxes at the store too?  25%?  You want me to buy health insurance, Obamacare that consumes more than we make a year?

You pay people to have babies?  Pay them to remain idle and not work?  Pay for all their fancy gadgets?

What do I get to keep at the end of the day?  Why should others get more of fruit from my labor than I do?  I'm rich?  I can afford it?  Really?'

What is wrong with a nation when it is a simple thing for the ruling class to steal the labor of others?  Sell an entire nation into debt slavery?  Poverty?

What is wrong with this nation?
