Family members of a teenager burned alive on Saturday night are desperate for answers in the heinous Mississippi murder.

Jessica Chambers, 19, was found burning near her car that was also engulfed in flames. She was flown to a hospital in Memphis but later died.

Her father, Ben Chambers, said investigators told him his daughter was set on fire.

"When the fire department got there, she was walking down the road on fire," he said. "Only part of her body that wasn't burned was the bottom of her feet."

He continued as he held back tears, "They squirted lighter fluid down her throat and in her nose, and apparently they knocked her out. She had a big gash on top of her head."

Ben Chambers worked as an employee for Panola County Sheriff's Office. He has faith that his friends and co-workers will get to the bottom of the crime.

Several people in town are taking to Facebook asking for #justiceforjessica.

Assistant District Attorney Jay Hale knows someone in the community knows something and is pleading for help. Detectives are working to learn who the 19-year-old may have been with before her murder.

"We're trying to go through the information that we have, certainly interviewing all the potential witnesses we can and going through and using the phone records we can," Hale said.

COURTLAND, Miss. — A family his planning their second child’s funeral after a woman was killed.

Panola County deputies believe Jessica Chambers was set on fire and are investigating her death as a homicide.

“It’s hard for me to talk,” Ben Chambers said. “It’s hard to breathe. You don’t even think about–.”

Most people do not think about losing a child the way Ben Chambers lost his.

“When the fire department got there they say she was on fire out in the road,” Chambers recalled.

“You couldn’t recognize her because she was unrecognizable,” Chambers described what he was told by doctors. “The doctor told us it wasn’t nothing we can do you know she was burned 98% of her body.”

Jessica died after being airlifted to Regional Medical Center in Memphis.

“They said that as far as they could tell like they squirted fluid down her throat and up her nose because it just burned her on the inside so bad,” Chambers said.

The Panola County Sheriff told WREG a driver dialed 911 after passing Jessica on a rural road near Highway 51 on Saturday night around 8:00 p.m.

Authorities revealed the victim was found next to the burning car.

The car was taken to the Panola County Jail in Batesville and is covered in a blue tarp.

“She had a big gash in her head like they knocked her out,” Chambers said.

Deputies were in the process of questioning people on Sunday.

The sheriff said deputies are on the lookout for two men they believe Jessica may have been with on Saturday night.

Chambers, who works as a mechanic for the Panola County Sheriff’s Office, is looking for answers and calling for action against his daughter’s killer.

“I want to see justice man,” Chambers said. Justice you know?”

A 19-year-old woman was doused in lighter fluid and set on fire, leaving her family distraught as investigators try to put tragedy aside and find the people responsible.

Charred grass, tire marks and crime tape lined the road in Courtland, Mississippi Sunday afternoon. It was the aftermath of a deadly scene Saturday night.

When Panola County Deputies were called to a burning car they found Jessica Chambers. She was taken to Regional One in Memphis, where she later died.

Chamber's burned car is being stored at the Panola County Jail with the blue tarp over the top. It will be used as evidence once someone is arrested.

Meanwhile, friends and family are still trying to cope with the loss.

Authorities searching for killer who set Panola County teenager on fire

PANOLA COUNTY, Miss. — The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Panola County Sheriff’s Office are seeking phone records and witnesses to find out who fatally lit a teenage girl on fire.

A passerby called the sheriff’s office about the burning car along Herron Road, near Highway 51, Saturday night.

Responders took 19-year-old Jessica Chambers to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, where she died.

Jessica’s father said his daughter tried to tell responders who killed her.

The sheriff’s office previously told WREG it’s possible Jessica had plans with two people that night, although Assistant District Attorney Jay Hale said there are no clear-cut suspects at this time.

He said her autopsy was underway Monday.

WREG met with Lisa Chambers, Jessica’s mother, Monday at a funeral home, after she finalized plans for her daughter’s burial.

Chambers said her daughter lived with her, and Jessica planned to go get her car cleaned Saturday evening. She spoke with her daughter on the phone around 6:48 p.m., and Jessica said she was going to get a bite to eat.

“[She] said ‘Bye, I love you, Mama. See you in a little while.’ Next time I seen her, she was in the Med,” Chambers said.

Chambers wants justice for her daughter, who she said was acting normally Saturday. She said her daughter had a job at a department store, cheered in high school, and didn’t currently have a boyfriend.

Jessica Chambers, 19, was found burning near her car that was also engulfed in flames. She was flown to a hospital in Memphis but later died. Early autopsy results reveal that Jessica died from severe burns that covered 98 percent of her body.

In her last breaths, she may have sent investigators down her killer's trail.

"She told them, she told them, told him who done it," Chambers said.

Investigators won't say what Jessica said or release the chilling details about how she died.

"I love her you know, I'm so sorry daddy wasn't there for her," her dad said. "I'd trade places with her in a minute if I could."

"We do have a phone that we believe is hers and that is what we are attempting to gather the information from," said Hale.

Ms. Chambers tried to tell Panola County law enforcement what happened, but she was burned so badly she couldn't speak.

Ms. Chambers of Courtland was found in in a remote spot in Panola County on Saturday night just after 8 p.m. She was near death from burns. Her car was on fire. She later died at Regional One's burn unit in Memphis.

The young woman's family and friends spent Monday making funeral arrangements.

"How can you put a 19-year-old kid in a car and catch it on fire?," said Allyssa Cotten, Chambers' best friend. "She was taken in such a cruel and such a horrible way. Just so unreal to me, I will never get to see her again. Justice will be served."

Lisa Chambers, the victim's mother, said her daughter's killer or killers would be judged by God, not her.

"And when they took her they took what was left of me," Lisa Chambers said. "They might as well have done it to me, sorry."

Sheriff Darby said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the sheriff's department spent the day combing over what was left of Chambers' car and they have come up with new leads.

Sheriff Darby said he is taking this case personally because the victim's father works as a mechanic for the Panola County Sheriff.

"I know this father," the sheriff said. "He is a really hard working guy. He is not deserving of this. Yes, it's personal."

The family has created a Facebook page “Justice For Jessica” to help in the search for her killer.

The death of a 19-year-old Panola County, Mississippi, woman who was found badly burned on a road near her burning car Saturday is being investigated as a homicide, said Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby.

Jessica Lane Chambers was found near her vehicle, a Kia Rio, on a road in the Courtland area of the North Mississippi county south of DeSoto. Panola County Coroner Gracie Gulledge on Monday attributed Chambers’ death to the burns.

“We’re looking at it as a homicide,” said Darby. “We haven’t got anything solid yet” as to naming suspects, “but we’re doing interviews, ... following up on tips, a lot of legwork,”

A passing motorist called a sheriff’s employee on Saturday about 8:15 p.m. to report seeing a woman lying near a burning vehicle, Darby said. “She was severely burned; it looks like she was in the car but got out.”

Chambers was transported by helicopter to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, “but we understand she died minutes after she got there,” said the sheriff.

Chambers, of the Courtland area, worked at the Goody’s apparel and gift store in nearby Batesville and was popular while a student at South Panola High School, said Darby. He said the case hits particularly hard because her father, Ben Chambers, is a member of the local law enforcement “family” as mechanic for the Sheriff’s Department.

“He’s a great guy, probably the best mechanic we’ve ever had,” said Darby.

Jay Hale, prosecutor for Panola County, said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting Panola, along with the State Fire Marshal’s Office. “We have everybody on call,” he said.

“They’re good people, and they’re hurting,” Hale said of Chambers’ family. “We met with her mother and father, and assured them we’ll seek justice for their daughter.”

Gas station surveillance video captures Jessica Chambers' last hours

Surveillance video from a gas station on Highway 51 in Courtland, MS shows Jessica Chambers walking toward the gas station before being called away by someone out of the camera's view.

Jessica, 19, can be seen waving before walking over to talk to the person. Shortly afterward, from another angle, surveillance video captures a man in a striped shirt fill up what appears to be a gas can before walking off in the same direction Jessica went. Jessica eventually returned to her car, finished pumping gas, and drove away.

Investigators obtained the video, which was recorded about 90 minutes before she was burned alive, to use in connection with the investigation. The burning happened less than one mile from the gas station at which the video was recorded.

Right now, no arrests have been made in the case. People are being questioned, but investigators are not calling anyone a person of interest or a suspect in the case. The man who can be seen in the video filling a gas can has been cleared by authorities.

Burned Mississippi teen's phone 'key' to finding killer, prosecutor says

The volunteer fire department that responded to her car blaze Saturday night got there quickly because it was at another call a couple of miles away, said John Champion, district attorney for Mississippi's 17th Circuit.
When firefighters arrived at the scene near Courtland, Mississippi, Chambers approached one of them and spoke. She was not on fire, as has been widely reported, the prosecutor said.
Champion didn't divulge what she said but told CNN, "It has certainly given us a lead we're following up on."

Though authorities are releasing sparse details of the crime and investigation, they have determined an accelerant was used in the blaze, but it's not clear whether the accelerant was poured on the car or Chambers herself, Champion said.
The state fire marshal is processing the evidence to determine what type of accelerant, and it's possible the evidence will need to be sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Atlanta, he said.
Investigators believe her phone will be "the key to everything," the prosecutor said. She received a call before she left her house, he said.
Despite reports she was going to a party, her appearance -- her hair was in a bun and she was wearing camouflage pajama pants -- suggests that wasn't the case, Champion said. Police have also spoken to partygoers, who don't recall seeing her there, he said.
The prosecutor also said investigators found no evidence in a store surveillance video that appears to show Chambers pre-paying for gas. She walks to the store's front door when something or someone catches her attention.
She waves and walks off camera briefly, comes back into the camera's view, enters the store where three men chat by the doorway and spends about a minute at the counter before going back outside and pumping gas.
The business, which Champion characterized as a rural mom-and-pop store, is about two miles from Chamber's home. She purchased something to drink there, the prosecutor said.
A Facebook page titled Justice for Jessica has drawn more than 63,000 likes and that number was climbing rapidly Wednesday afternoon. The page states it was created "to keep Jessica's name alive & out there."
Firefighters found Chambers and her car in a wooded area. Her sister, Amanda, told CNN affiliate KTSM that Jessica had burns over 98% of her body when she died Sunday. An autopsy was performed but results have not been made public.
"Nobody deserves what she went through," her sister told the station from her home in Fort Bliss, Texas. "She was a cheerleader. She was really well-known. She was loved."
Amanda's husband was on his way home from overseas Tuesday, she told KTSM. When he arrives, they'll travel to Mississippi to be with Amanda's family.
"They have ripped everything I have," Jessica's mother, Lisa Chambers, told CNN affiliate WMC.
The teen had left the house to clean out her car and get something to eat before her death, her mother said.

Burning Death Inquiry Eyes Woman's Last Hours

Surveillance video that shows a woman at a convenience store gas station less than two hours before she was set on fire and left to die is part of the puzzle authorities were trying to piece together Wednesday about the last hours of the 19-year-old's life.

Authorities were reviewing Jessica Chambers' cellphone records and talking to possible witnesses, who could become suspects, said Jay Hale, an assistant district attorney who prosecutes cases in Panola County. They are trying to figure out what happened to her before she was found barely alive near her burning car Saturday in Mississippi.

Hale said Chambers spoke with firefighters on the scene before she was taken to a Memphis hospital, where she died. Hale said he could not discuss what she said.

"She was able to communicate. It was difficult," Hale said.

The video shows Chambers walking toward the front door of the convenience store in Courtland, which is about an hour south of Memphis, Tennessee. She then stopped, turned to her left, and walked out of the picture.

Convenience store manager Ali Fadhel said Chambers came in frequently and he would often speak with her. He told The Associated Press that Chambers spoke with someone before entering the store to purchase gas.

On her way out, Chambers got a call on her cellphone, Fadhel said. After she pumped gas, she re-entered the store, bought cigarettes, and drove away, headed south on Highway 51, he said.

According to Fadhel, Chambers was wearing a dark-colored sweater and pajama pants that looked like sweatpants. Chambers said she was going to make a stop before going home, Fadhel said.

"If she knew she had a problem with somebody, she would have told me," Fadhel said.

Chambers bought $14 worth of gas, more than the $5 or so she usually purchased, he said.

"I asked her, 'Why are you putting so much gas?' She said, 'I'm going somewhere,'" Fadhel said.

Hale said he could not comment on Fadhel's statements.

The grassy area alongside the road where Chambers was found about 90 minutes after she was captured on the convenience store video was cordoned off with yellow tape Wednesday.

Authorities are testing samples taken from her vehicle. The U.S. Marshals Service is helping review the cellphone records from numerous people ? including Chambers ? to try to pinpoint where she went in the hours before she died, Hale said.

"We're interviewing every possible witness. These witnesses certainly could be possible suspects," he said.

Mississippi authorities say they have received offers to help from several agencies, including the U.S. attorney's office and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Autopsy results have not been released, and it was not clear when they would be available.

"When it comes to a case like this of a burn nature, you don't get a lot of answers overnight," Hale said.

COURTLAND, Miss. — The town of Courtland has 420 residents.

In a town that small, everyone knows everyone. Matter of fact, everyone is practically family.

When Jessica Chambers was found walking down Herron Road on fire, only to die shortly afterwards in the hospital, it sent shock waves through the little town that most people had, up until that point, thought was safe.

Chambers was last seen alive at McCullar's First Stop on Mississippi 51 Saturday night. On Wednesday, the store was still full of people standing around, talking about what might be the next turn in the case.

Michael Eubanks, who has lived in Courtland all his life, said the scary part is that if everyone knows Chambers, that means everyone knows the person or people who did this to her.

"There are no words," he said. "I just wish justice would be done on them."

The community 70 miles south of Memphis is shaken to the core. A store worker said she was trying to sort out how the friendly little blonde who came in and made small talk all the time could actually be gone forever.

Ali Alsanai, the clerk, said he knew Chambers well. He said nothing seemed out of sorts when she came in, and that was what disturbed him the most.

"If something was going on, she would have told me. She would have told me she was having a problem with someone," he said. "But she was smiling, and she left, and that's the last time I saw her."

When Tonya Flagg walked in, she heard the conversation and immediately smiled sadly and said, "I loved Jessica."

"She was quiet, she was a typical young girl who liked to have fun, but she didn't bother nobody," she said. "There's so much going on around here it's hard to trust some people, but she was a genuine person. She was herself at all times."

Up the road in Batesville, Chambers' co-workers at Goody's department store could barely even say her name without tears.

Chambers had only worked there a little over a month, Lundy said, but she had already worked her way into the hearts of everyone she came in contact with.

At ground zero, the firefighters and first responders that worked Chambers' call are all dealing with it in their own way, said Courtland Fire Chief Cole Haley. Chambers was found hardly a mile from the department, not far from most of the firefighters' own homes.

"It's a tough one, you know. All of them stick with you, but something like this really hangs in your mind," he said. "I've been checking on all my guys making sure they're all right, and everyone seems to be coping with it, but it's something that will take some time to get over."

In the background of the grieving is the ominous feeling that even though the authorities have said the attack was not random, that danger might still be out there. People weren't afraid to speculate about the situation, but few people wanted their name involved. To them, there's no telling what could happen next.

This crime has made me sick.  There are so many stories about where she was found.  I read she was next to the car, she was in the car, and she was walking down the street on fire.  I hope she was able to say the name of her perp.  If she has, why hasn't s/he or they been bought in yet?  Maybe they are watching them, but don't have enough to bring them in yet.

The other thing that really bothers me about this heinous crime is there are so many details given out and so much talk about how setting her and the car on fire removes evidence.  I feel they are giving others a blueprint on how to commit a crime and not incriminate themselves.  The next crime, the person/people will make sure the person is dead after they set them on fire.  I also read in the many articles I saw that there was a recent program on TV saying just that and they may have given her killer(s) the idea of setting any evidence on fire.  When I come upon that article again, I will be sure to give the place I found it.  I read so many articles so fast because I just could not believe what I was reading.

I used to have a boss who was a substance abuser and had to go to meetings every day.  Others told me how he used to brag about how messed up he got and how he lit at least one homeless person on fire.  It was hearsay, he never said it to me, but I remember how much it sickened me.  I do remember him being braggadocios and how he seemed proud of being a substance abuser saying he used to do things that were no one should be proud of doing.

There are sick sick people in this world.  Thank God, there are more good people than evil ones.

Like the family of Jessica Chambers, Panola County residents are also waiting for the release of any DNA and autopsy results they hope will give investigators more clues in solving this high-profile case.


It's the second funeral Wells has done for the Chambers family. Jessica's brother lost his life in a car crash two years ago.

Wells added, "Losing one is bad, but losing two is even worse and with this being around the holiday season, it makes it even tougher on a family to deal with."
Family members will remember the 19 year old Saturday during a closed-casket funeral service at Wells Funeral Home in Batesville, Mississippi at 2 p.m. People who can't attend the service will be able to watch the service online via the funeral home's website.

Thirty-one-year-old Derrick Turner says he was picked up Monday morning and was taken to the Panola County jail where he was questioned in the death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers.

"I was just called in for a situation I didn't know nothing about." Turner said he knew Chambers. "But I don't just know her like that because I'm way older than her. So I've seen her around at stores and everything, but I don't just know her like that."

Turner said he was not in Courtland, Mississippi when Chambers was discovered lying next to her car on fire. She died not long after she was found.

Peter Odom, an attorney who prosecuted some arson cases, told HLN’s “Nancy Grace” that investigators are looking for something in particular when they interview people involved in the case.

“They’re looking for someone with singed eyebrows and maybe burned hands. Because the burner often gets burned,” he said.

Rev. Larry Kilgore told around 300 mourners Saturday that Chambers "fought some battles, some very tough battles," but that she was committed to improving her life before she was killed. He shared the feelings of many who wondered why someone would kill the teen. "Our hearts are hurting, our spirits are burdened," he said.

Chambers' father, Ben Chambers, said his daughter left a battered women's shelter a few months before she was killed. "She was getting on the right track. She had learned her lessons from being in bad relationships," he told NBC News Saturday.

Authorities say Chambers was doused in a flammable liquid and set on fire on a back road in Panola County on Dec. 6, and firefighters found her badly injured but still alive. She later died at a hospital in Memphis. Police have made no arrests, but have questioned one person in the case, who denied knowing her, NBC station WMC reported. A reward on Friday was upped to $11,000 for information leading to her killer.

This had to be planned.  Who carries an accelerant around with them and suddenly gets an idea like this?  Even if it was a stranger, and I don't believe it was, it was someone who was looking for a specific type of person to set ablaze.  Who had a vendetta against her or someone like her? 

I feel she was planning to meet someone she felt comfortable with, or she would not have been dressed the way she was.  She was not dressed for a party.  She also was not dressed to meet someone she wanted to impress.  The only other thing I can think of is someone whose car broke down and Jessica picked them up because she was convinced they were carrying gas to a broken down car.  Was this near a gas station where this could be a possibility?  Or, did her car break down and someone picked her up and used gasoline to destroy the evidence after they attacked her?  Someone could also have run into the road in front of her car and when she came to a sudden stop, they attacked.  Were there skid marks in the road there or anywhere near there?   

Someone wanted her hurt badly enough that she could not even stay with her parents, she had to go to a battered woman's shelter.  Did Jessica meet someone there that was obsessed with her, or was there someone Jessica convinced to stay away from that person's significant other. and that woman mentioned Jessica's name to her own batterer?  If they have not picked up the person who battered Jessica, it has to be that the person had a good alibi.  If that is true, could the person who abused her know someone who would do this for hire, because they needed the money?  Was there a large amount of money taken from someone's account recently? 

They should check the gas stations and find out if anyone purchased gas and put it into a container.  If they do not know, is it doable to review all the tapes from gas stations in the area from a week or so before this horrible crime was committed, starting with that day and then going back one day at a time, or one station at a time?

These are just some questions and thoughts running through my head concerning what could have happened or what could be going on behind the scenes.  This is such a heinous act and I feel so impotent not being able to help.  I cannot imagine what those who know her or love her feel.

As police still hunt for the burning death killer responsible for the murder of Jessica Chambers, the victim’s father is now speaking out. Ben Chambers is making a vow to seek justice and find answers for the slain girl, hoping that the suspect — whenever he or she is found — will soon be sent to solitary confinement. The Clarion Ledger News reports this Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, that Chambers says he will work to maintain this promise for as long as he can still draw breath.
Following a fiery crime that stunned the nation, the police hunt for a dubbed “burning death” killer continues this week. Jessica Chambers, a 19-year-old girl, was discovered earlier this month on Herron Road. She was stumbling away on Herron Road from a car wreathed in flames — serious burns covered nearly her entire body, and police ruled it as a homicide. Now, Chambers’ father is saying that despite this difficult time of grief and mourning, an outpouring of support and the hope that he will get justice for his daughter is keeping him determined for the truth.
"I promise as long as I have breath in me, I can talk to people and make sure they're not comfortable in there," Ben Chambers said. “Everybody's supportive. And there are people calling us from other towns saying even their lowest dope dealer and troublemaker is trying to find out who did it. Everybody's angry about this."
“There's even talk of a motorcycle group who has a bounty on the head of Jessica Chambers' killer,” added the source site. “It's his understanding that if they find out who did it, they'll try to bring him in … I heard that if they find out who it is, that they definitely will do something about it.”
Although information on the autopsy is known to police officials, it has not been shared with the public at this point in time during the ongoing case investigation. "We know what happened to her," said District Attorney John Champion. "We're not going to comment on that."

Janet Posey, 39, of Blue Springs, was arrested Wednesday around 10:30 p.m. at her home by investigators with the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division and the Union County Sheriff's Office, according to Attorney General Jim Hood. Posey is charged with one count of attempted false pretense and one count of communications fraud for allegedly setting up a scam to fundraise donations for Chambers' family.

Luckily, she was caught before she raised any money, according to Hood.

Amid rumors, Ali Alsanai says he doesn't know whether someone choked Jessica Chambers outside of his store. He says he just found out about the allegations and it is not in his surveillance recording system.

"I heard from random customers walking in and out that she got choked a week before she died. It was early in the morning.....I didn't know about it because I wasn't here," said Alsanai.

Kendrick Sanders knew Jessica Chambers. His cousin, a South Panola football player where Chambers was a cheerleader, dated her. His cousin was locked up a year ago and remains behind bars. Sanford says people have even talked about him in connection to Chambers' case.

PANOLA CO, MS (WMC) - Jessica Chambers' closest friends, along with her family, are preparing to spend their first Christmas without the 19-year-old girl.

"She'd buy little gifts for all her little nieces," said friend Heather Joyner-Parker. "It was her favorite time."

Two week ago, the 19-year-old was burned alive not far from her house. It's just now sinking in for those used to seeing Jessica around on her favorite holiday.

"It really hurts, because I get to see my kids open presents, and I've done bought Christmas presents, saying they're from Jessica to my kids," said Joyner-Parker.

Strangers are doing everything they can to brighten her loved ones' holidays.

"We don't know who did it, but whoever did, we thank you," said Joyner-Parker.

Red poinsettias take over the yellow crime scene tape. "It didn't look like a crime scene no more," commented friend Alicia Faulkner.

Her friends can only stop and wonder what Jessica would say about her makeshift memorial - just in time for Christmas.

"I could hear her say that I know I'm loved," said Faulkner. "People do love me."

I have this horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach we are going to be sickened when we do find out what really happened and why.  I know there is no other way to feel due to the horrendous way this young woman was murdered at the prime of her life, before she even had a chance to experience her happy future.  I hope the perp/s will be caught and soon, and I hope there is no retaliatory violence, there has been more than enough horror already.  I am sure there are people who miss her this Christmas and are going through the day with heavy hearts.  I hope justice is swift and is indeed just for Jessica.

Interview with two people who have been questioned in Jessica's case, video at the link, the man says he took a polygraph and was swabbed for dna, the woman says she was questioned about a text message she sent to Jessica two days before her death.  The report states that over 100 people have been interviewed in relation to Jessica's murder.

Jessica Chamber’s dad says he is frustrated that no one seems to know who set his daughter on fire and killed her.

According to the Associated Press, Ben Chambers, who works for the sheriff’s department, said he is being told by his colleagues to steer clear of the area where the investigators are working.

“They don’t want me to see the evidence up there. I understand their point too, they’re looking out for my benefit,” he said. “They don’t want me to see things that bring back memories, or see something that maybe I’ll think someone had something to do with it and I’ll go do something to some innocent person. They’re doing everything by the book when it comes to me.”

On Dec. 6, Jessica Chambers, 19, was covered in a flammable liquid and set on fire. She later died from burns that covered more than 98 percent of her body.

Investigators are continuing to follow leads, including reports that it is gang-related, as well as the results of DNA evidence and fire analysis.

“They’ve questioned people that normally know everything about everything, and nobody seems to know anything about this, that’s what’s so amazing and unbelievable,” he said.

Burned alive and left to die, Jessica Chambers' murder has many across the country looking in on the investigation. So far no one is charged in her death almost a month after her murder.

District Attorney John Champion is waiting for subpoenas and lab results this week that may give investigators more clues into the timeline leading up to her death.

"The only thing I'll comment on is we've got it past the video at the gas station. Do we have a 100 percent timeline? No," Champion said.

People seen at the store, including a man pumping gas into a jug next to Chambers said they've been questioned. Champion says the only person officially cleared is the clerk who works there.

"I'm not ruling anything out, but we certainly have looked at numerous people that we feel like didn't have anything to do with it," he said.

Champion said detectives have other sources of video too, but like 911 calls and autopsy results, those videos won't be released to the public.

"Nothing that is protected by the grand jury, or that is subject to being taken to the grand jury is a public record under Mississippi law and that's why we're not releasing it," Champion explained.

Despite speculation in town and online, Champion said there's been a lack of credible street talk that investigators have been able to use. Talk of a reward increase may change that.

"We're looking for credible information, that could put credible suspects on our radar, we have, like I said, interviewed close to 100 people and some of it is from what we're hearing off of the street, but it's nothing credible."

I don't want to disrespect Mr. Champion's position as the DA and co-investigator to the Sheriff but the words 'wet noodle' come to mind.  No passion for the plight of Jessica Chambers to speak of.  I don't believe he even mentioned her name but it's a long video so I could be mistaken.  Champion, however, spoke very courteously of the community and how they have 'all cooperated'.

Either the authorities are interviewing the wrong people or they have all not cooperated.

Also, he was completely dismissive of the video from the gas station having any importance to the investigation.  Additionally, Champion stated LE had the hard drive to that video and did so from the beginning but I have to ask, if that's true than are the images of officers taping the surveillance from a monitor in the store falsified and if not why were officers doing video screen captures of the tape if they had the hard drive?

I will be surprised if there are arrests or a conviction brought in this case and it pains me to say that because this young woman suffered beyond comprehension and there is genuine evil walking the streets of Mr. Champions 'cooperative' community.

Texas Mom, I have thought from early on Jessica's murder may be related to the sex slave industry.  The man above is 44 and the girl he is with looks very young. 

Jessica's death seemed more like a warning to others than a crime of passion, IMO. 

In an interview with Ali he said there were rumors of this being drug related and that someone was "really angry" with Jessica, and maybe those things are true, but I still have a tiny hunch there is something else going on here.

I just revisited a site Red had posted.  I do not know the reputation of the site or how accurate it has proven to be but the articles about Jessica are devastating.

As a mother I would be on a rampage in that little town.  I wouldn't stop until CNN and FOX were talking openly about the horror of what happened to Jessica Lane Chambers, not because of race but because of the evils lurking throughout an entire town and possibly an entire county.

♦ Charlotte Wilkerson used to work at a place called the Skyline Motel located at 200 Highway #51, Batesville, MS – as a room cleaner. The Motel is known locally to be a place frequented by those within the business of prostitution. A review via Bing Maps shows the Skyline Motel approximately a mile North from the location of M&M First Stop Gas Station.

And here is additional information which can be used by LEO. Charlotte Wilkerson, aka “Auntie Sha-Sha”, had a conversation with another person (unnamed but solidly verified).

During that conversation Wilkerson stated what she already confirmed during a TV interview, that Jessica went to “a party“. (Willing or unwilling travel unknown).

However, unstated in the TV interview, but stated in the conversation being shared, was that Jessica was “raped by 4 males” at this party.  The names given were: Eric, Roscoe, Bryan, Robert. However due to pronunciations, cultural use of odd nicknames, etc. these might be “real names” or they could be “street names”.

Two of the four, are rumored to have left “the party” with Jessica: “Eric and Roscoe”.

The above information does not come from anyone with a vested interest in the outcome. Nor does the source surface within the social circles of the people previously outlined, discussed or encountered during any research that we are aware of.

A group claiming to be the hacktivist organization Anonymous has joined in the hunt for the murderer of a Mississippi teenager, posting information about people they claim have some connection to the crime.

Meanwhile, the family of Jessica Chambers, the young woman who was set on fire and left for dead on the side of the road in Panola County, Mississippi, has asked the group to stop tweeting about the case.
"Please as Jessica's Mother I am asking you to stop all the foolish talk!! I am SICK OF IT!!! I stand behind the Panola County Sheriffs Department 100%!! Please let them do their Job!! Thank You!!!" wrote Lisa Daugherty, Jessica Chambers' mother on the Facebook page "Justice for Jessica."
"MBI is going to go about its business and do what they're trained to do regardless of what shows up on social media, whether it's the Chambers death investigation or any other investigation," Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain told The Clarion Ledger. JACKSON, Miss. –Mississippi Governor Phil Byrant says the person or persons that killed Jessica Chambers will be found and brought to justice.

“My instructions to (Mississippi Department of Public Safety) Commissioner Albert Santa Cruze is to spare no effort.  Whatever we need to do, utilize whatever expertise, equipment, manpower, personnel, we are going to find the person who committed this heinous crime; and we are going to hold them accountable,” Bryant said in an interview with News Mississippi.

Chambers, 19, was found burning alive just over a month ago in Panola County.  Her father said she had apparently been hit over the head and a flammable substance was poured down her mouth and nose before she was set on fire.  She died a day later at a Memphis hospital.

“I’m a former law enforcement officer and have investigated homicides as a sheriff deputy; and it’s just a chilling effect when you hear how one human being can inflict such a horrible crime on another,” said Bryant.

Jessica’s terrifying death has drawn national attention and as weeks have gone by, with no one in custody, an online change.org  petition has been created calling on Bryant to use his power to help solve the murder. But the Governor told News Mississippi he has been involved in the case since day one.  “I have personally been kept aware of the progress that’s being made and continue to encourage, where I can, that we stay on the case until it is solved and justice is done for Jessica.”

Bryant said local, state and federal investigators are working tirelessly to find Jessica’s killer(s).  “Believe me, there is no one who would like to solve this crime more than the local law enforcement agencies and the professional investigators who are working for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.”

Officials said the reward amount in the death of Courtland teen Jessica Chambers is now up to $43,000.

Panola County District Attorney John Champion said the FBI has added $25,000 to the amount in hopes that it may bring people out who know something about Chambers' death.

"A lot of things in this world are money-driven, and we're hoping that there's someone out there that know something that sees the reward and is willing to come forward," Champion said.

Chambers was found on Herron Road in Courtland a little after 8 p.m. on Dec. 6, walking away from her burning vehicle with burns over 98 percent of her body. Coroner Gracie Gulledge said the cause of the young woman's death was thermal injury.

Officials classified Chambers' death as a homicide, but in spite of interviewing what they have said is more than 100 potential witnesses, they say they still have yet to emerge with a prime suspect.

Chambers' father, Ben Chambers, said her family is in a potential state of anxiety, waiting on some word on the case. He said since he does work for the sheriff's department, they have left him out of the loop on investigation details for his own sake.

"We're just waitig and hoping that something will hurry up and happen, and praying and getting through it," he said. "If something doesn't happen we might go crazy."

Chambers made a statement to first responders in which she allegedly gave them the name of her attacker, but even leads connected to that statement have not yet panned out.

Much public speculation has linked the crime to alleged gangs in the area, but Ben Chambers said someone claiming to be a high-ranking gang member in the area had contacted him to tell him that the gangs in the area were angry and upset about what happened to Jessica as well.

"They're very upset about it. They said you wouldn't even do a dog like that," Ben Chambers said.

So the search for suspects continues.

"We're still interviewing people. Mostly we're in the process of reinterviewing people and going through everything with a fine-tooth comb," Champion said.

Authorities at one point had said they were narrowing down their list of suspects, but at this point in the investigation, they are tight-lipped as to what that means.

JACKSON, Missisisppi -- The FBI has released a new poster seeking for information that will help identify a suspect who burned 19-year-old Jessica Chambers to death last month.

The agency is also offering a $25,000 reward, raising the total reward to almost $45,000.

A poster announcing the reward and asking for the public's assistance is being posted on the FBI's website.

On Dec. 6, Chambers was attacked and burned by an unknown assailant or assailants. She died as a result of the injuries she suffered during that attack.

Since the discovery of this brutal crime, multiple state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies have participated in a collaborative investigative effort to identify the person or persons responsible for Jessica's death.

Significant resources have been dedicated to this investigation, and additional rewards have been offered for information relevant to this case.

"We continue to solicit the public's assistance in solving this heinous crime," said FBI Special Agent in Charge Donald Alway.  "With the public's help, we are confident that information will be uncovered which will lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the individual or individuals who cruelly and brutally attacked and killed Jessica Chambers."

PANOLA COUNTY, Miss. — Investigators don’t yet know where Jessica Chambers was for about one hour on the night she was murdered, District Attorney John Champion revealed Tuesday.

Champion released more details Tuesday than ever before about where Chambers was on the day someone lit her on fire, December 6th, 2014. He is hoping the additional information will bring new tips for investigators.

The timeline of that night so far goes like this:
– Until about 5 p.m., Jessica was mostly at home.
– Around 5 p.m., she got a call from a friend and went to a gas station in Courtland. WREG has shown you the surveillance video from her stop here, where she put gas in her car.
– She went to a home in Courtland shortly before 6 p.m. and left a few minutes later.
– Chambers was located in the area of Highway 6’s first set of stoplights, coming into Batesville. She was there 10 to 15 minutes. The DA couldn’t elaborate further about where she was specifically.
– Chambers was back in Courtland around 6:30 p.m.
– No one can place Chambers for the next hour. Investigators know she was at the murder scene on Herron Road at 7:31 p.m. Chambers’ mother previously told WREG they spoke on the phone briefly around 6:45 p.m.
– The 911 call went out at 8:09 p.m.

Jessica died several hours later at a Memphis hospital on December 7th.

“We’re hoping that by releasing this information, it may generate some memories of somebody that may have seen her there, or seen her within the Courtland community and 8:09:56 when the fire call came in,” Champion said.

Officials hope that it may jog someone's memory as to anything else they might remember from that day.

Champion said around 5 or 5:30 p.m., Chambers got a phone call, and she left and went to the convenience store where she was captured on surveillance video. Officials know who made that call, and they don't believe that person has any bearing on the case.

Chambers' mother, Lisa Daugherty, has said that Chambers told her she was going to get food and clean her car out. She said she believes Jessica went to Batesville to do that because she learned later that the car cleaning facility in Courtland wasn't working at the time.

A little before 6 p.m., Chambers was at a residence in Courtland for about five to seven minutes. Champion said officials will not elaborate on whose residence that was or what she did there, nor if she picked someone up or dropped someone off.

She went from that residence to the area of Woodland and Highway 6 in Batesville. Champion said there are several businesses there she may have visited, and she was in that area for about 10 to 15 minutes. A separate, privately owned video source caught an image of her in her car during this time, but authorities said they know where she was going.

Around 6:30, Chambers was back in Courtland. But that's where that gap in the timeline comes. Officials don't know where she was for the hour after 6:30 p.m.

"At around 7:31, we've got her on the scene where she was found," Champion said. "There's that one hour gap we can't put her in a particular spot... yet. We're asking anyone who saw her between 6:30 and 7:30 that night to let us know."

Officials used witness statements, along with technology, to help narrow down where Chambers was throughout the day.

"We're certainly using her cellphone records and using some technology we have available to pin some of this stuff down," the DA said.

The talk that there was a party that Chambers attended has turned up nothing, officials said.

"There's nothing at all to say she was at a party," Champion said.

No new information has been released by officials in Courtland, Mississippi, regarding the investigation into the December 6th murder of Jessica Lane Chambers. However, the social media chatter has picked up extensively since District Attorney John Champion announced the timeline of Ms. Chamber’s activity on the day she was killed.

It is the community discussion around the missing hour of 6:30pm to 7:31pm which has brought clarity to events leading up to the tragic night she was killed.

However, given the latest admissions -by people of various degrees of consequence to the events of December 6th, and with the full understanding that concern for witness safety has surfaced as a paramount issue- a strong possibility exists.

It is with great sensitivity we have approached the known activity, behavior and associations of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers in the months prior to her death.

Regardless of her conduct, like all other similar murder victims, her memory deserves a genuine amount of respect and consideration. However, discussion must also accept reality of behavior without disposition toward judgment of it.

As the weeks have lengthened it has become more clear that Jessica Chambers engaged in some lifestyle and behavior risks. From the outside looking in it is easy to hastily judge her choices and decisions. However, for the sake of actually finding her killer – one must set aside judgment and approach with an keen sense of acceptance.

Jessica was known to have used various illegal narcotics beyond the more common teenage marijuana use. Those within her larger social circle admit and acknowledge her use of pills, tabs, meth and, on occasion, crack cocaine. She would not be generally described as a hardcore user, or addict, however she did frequently engage. It appears her use was generally within a social circle or with friends. But it is also generally accepted – she used alone.

In addition much like many other similarly engaged and attractive young women, she would sell sex as a source of financing her purchases. It may be a disconcerting reality to accept, but there is enough evidence -enough people with the same experience- to substantiate both the drug use and lifestyle choices.

An affirmation of sorts comes from a person in direct knowledge of Jessica who affirms Jess was trying to trade four Lortabs for $20 crack cocaine on the very day she was killed.

Once these ‘at risk behaviors’ are understood – the claims leading up to and surrounding her death begin to make more sense.

What follows below is the general story as it has played out over several recent weeks via a close geographic social circle. It should be noted that no-one outlined is officially identified as a person of interest, or suspect – nor are we making the claim as such.

Our research indicates this information is just as well known to investigators as it is to us; and now will be to you. Our efforts are to connect the disparate discussions into the general storyline as it is openly unfolding via social media.

Perhaps sunlight can provide a greater understanding.

On June 2nd 2014 Jessica had an altercation with her mom, Lisa Daugherty (Chambers). Described as a “simple assault” eventually this altercation led to Jessica going into an informal diversionary program, agreed by her family, at a place called Leah’s House. This is not a new revelation, we have discussed this before.

However, prior to that altercation with Lisa Daugherty, Jessica and her then boyfriend, Travis “Travo” Sanford, had a run-in with a rather seedy Courtland character named Roger Hentz, age 53.

As the story is told:

Jessica Chambers had arranged a prescription drug sale to Hentz for ¹approximately 100 Lortab pills. Lortabs are a combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen. They are generally prescribed by doctors for pain relief. On the street the Lortabs have a value of $5 each, which put the arranged deal at around $500.

[¹Scripts are usually written and filled for 90 to 120 pills. (90 = 3x daily 8/hours) (120 = 4x daily 6/hrs) the strength of the dosage generally determines the daily dose prescribed – which in turn changes the number of pills for average script - link]

It is currently assumed that Jessica was introduced to Roger Hentz through Charlotte Wilkerson, aka “Auntie Sha-Sha” who knows both Roger and his girlfriend, Annette Hill.

It is not exactly clear who was to provide the pills, either Jessica or Travis “Travo” Sanford.  However, what is clear is the pills Jessica and Travo brought to the deal were not actually the pharmaceutical “Lortabs”, they were fakes.

Two different people confirm the fake pills were OTC products gained from Freds Pharmacy in Batesville (475 Highway 6E, Batesville), either purchased or stolen.  It is claimed Jessica and Travo attempted to pass off the OTC pills as Lortabs and Roger Hentz became suspicious of them.

A reluctant Roger Hentz was forced to accept the deal by Travo.

How Roger was “forced” is an unknown variable.  However, the total amount of money exchanged was reduced as a consequence of the suspicion the pills were fake.  Travo and Jessica reportedly left with approximately $400.

It is claimed within the networked community that Roger Hentz and Annette Hill were furious they had been ripped off.  Shortly before Jessica went to Leah’s House – Jessica was angrily and publically confronted by Roger’s girlfriend, Annette.

After Jessica left Leah’s House (late August 2014), Travo was in jail for another incident, when Jessica was again confronted by Roger and Annette at M&M First Stop Gas station.

During this encounter Jessica was threatened with a hammer – again publically.

There were at least two more violent confrontations witnessed by independent people between the M&M Gas station event, and the night Jessica was murdered.

In addition, Lisa Daugherty confirmed publically and to investigators that Roger Hentz and/or Annette Hill had angrily come to her house looking for Jessica, making threats and demanding restitution.

If you count the visit to Jessica’s home, there are at least five independently witnessed events where either Roger, Annette, or both together, were threatening or intimidating Jessica Chambers.

DA Champion admitted there was a physical assault at M&M Gas Station during one of the media interviews. Station owner, Ali Alsanai, aka Ali Fadhel, aka Basem Alsanai, also appeared in local media and confirmed his knowledge of the attack. However, at the time of this initial media report by Champion (confirmation by Ali) the name of the attacker was unknown.

It is now presumed this previously mentioned incident at M&M was with Roger Hentz.

No-one in the Courtland community want’s to be on the wrong side of Roger Hentz, and when you understand his history -and the history of his longstanding family- you begin to understand why the community fear him.

An intimidating influence.

The question quickly becomes was the murder of Jessica Chambers related to her and Travo double-crossing Roger Hentz and Annette Hill?

It would certainly appear that Jessica was held accountable for the fake Lortabs and subsequent rip-off.

Actually, with Travis “Travo” Sanford in jail it would appear Jessica was the only one who could be held accountable.

Does this explain the consistent issue raised about people being worried to come forward? Was this motive what was referenced by Charlotte “Sha-Sha” Wilkerson when she mentioned “they went too far“?

Was “they” actually Roger and Annette, or Roger  and another?

Was Jessica going to have to pay Roger Hentz back in other ways, and something went wrong?… Was this ‘leverage’ what convinced Jessica to arrange a meeting, or made her reluctantly willing to go somewhere?

There are just as many questions as there are reconcilable answers.  Obviously, the local, State and Federal investigators also know this information…. and yet.

The well known Jessica local circle of Charlotte Wilkerson, Boone Mister, Pat Mister and Denise Tutor, Ali Alsanai, The Rudds and The Sanfords et al would also know about Roger Hentz.

A person might reconcile the aforementioned unwillingness to discuss given the potential for intimidation…. or worse.

If you accept this narrative as generally accurate, then you might also see how unfortunately this reality also provides a rather extensive list of possibilities for reasonable doubt in a courtroom.

Hello everyone... I sincerely apologize for not posting lately. I have tried to mask my feelings by busying myself.. I can not get jessica off my mind. Living states away masks my anxiety, I recently took a trip home & brought everything back to light. I feel completely lost and I just try not to talk about it. Unfortunately I don't have an update, We have no answers and have not been talked to or told anything in so long! I have reached out for help but so far I have been told the same thing over and over.. Everyone that wants to help needs full cooperation from the LE & it just seems they don't want help.. There has been no talk lately and as we come up on the 4 month anniversary of my Sisters attack/murder... I'd really like to ask everyone to just hold their loved ones as close as they can.. Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby says overnight Internet rumors about arrests in the ongoing Jessica Chambers case are false.

WMC Action News 5 received several calls and emails from viewers about possible arrests in the case.

Darby says his team continues to work leads daily, but said no arrests have been made.

Names mentioned in online postings may have been brought into the jail for unrelated charges, but Darby emphasized the individuals were not brought in for the Chambers case.

Monday will mark four months since the 19-year-old was found badly burned next to her car.

PANOLA COUNTY, Miss. (FOX13) - The lead investigator in the Jessica Chambers murder case is giving FOX13 the indication they may be closing in on suspects in the gruesome murder six months after the Mississippi woman was burned alive.

Jessica's father spoke with FOX13 about his grief and the added grief he has had to take on.

Ben Chambers says he has had enough, and now he has hired an attorney.

"We are having a problem with my insurance company not wanting to pay off on my daughter because they said that she wasn't a student in school. I have my insurance through Met Life and they are not wanting to pay off now," said Chambers.

Major Barry Thompson, the lead investigator in the Chambers murder says he has been told the payoff is being held because the murder remains unsolved.

Thompson wrote a letter on behalf of the Panola County Sheriff's Department, and in it he clearly states Ben Chambers is not nor has he ever been  a suspect.

But Thompson did offer some insight into suspects.

“I would say from a confidence standpoint, the team of investigators working on this case have a level of confidence that we have not had before now," Thompson said. "There is a direction that we are going in now that we haven't gone before, and it seems to be a good direction that we are headed in yes sir," he continued.

A good direction he says after six months of so many dead ends. Who could have burned a young woman alive?

"I can't say 100 percent that it was somebody that she knew but just the sheer hatred of the crime tells me it took it to another level," continued Thompson.

The clues stop there leaving the investigation ongoing.

"And the car insurance they wouldn't pay off because they say she wasn't killed by another car, so they won't pay off," Chambers said."You know its unbelievable how somebody can be murdered but they say she didn't die the right way," Chambers continued.

It has been a little over eight months since 19-year-old Jessica Chambers was set on fire and left to die on a Panola County back road.

A FOX13 investigation uncovered what appear to be new leads and a renewed hope in the case.

Panola County Lead investigator Barry Thompson was in court all day and could not speak on camera, but he did say he felt good about the case. He added investigators are still tying some things together.

The sense of optimism has spilled over to Jessica's father, Ben Chambers.

"My thoughts right now are more positive, and I have new hope right now since the investigation,” Chambers said. “I talked to the investigator and he gave me some good information.”

FOX13 has learned that 12 to 15 more people have recently been interviewed by investigators. We were also told investigators are still looking for key evidence, but they are keeping that information closely guarded.

Ben Chambers told us he thinks he knows who killed his daughter, and he thinks the law knows too.

"Oh yes sir; it's definitely coming to a close,” Chambers said. “They know who done it and they got proof. They just need some more proof.”

Just a year ago, a tiny blonde ex-cheerleader named Jessica Chambers worked at Goody's in Batesville.

The sassy 19-year-old had a dog named Roscoe at the home she shared with her mom, and she was getting ready for Christmas -- her favorite holiday. She was like so many other teenage girls.

Dec. 6, 2014, started off like a normal Saturday. After hanging out with friends, Jessica went to the store. She took a nap on the couch. Then she got a phone call and left her house for what would be the last time.

That night, Jessica died a gruesome death, leaving a crater in the world around her.

Just after 8 p.m., Chambers was doused with gasoline and set on fire in her car next to the gate of some private land on Herron Road, under several trees that still bear the burns from the heat of the flames. She got out of the car and was found on the road with burns over most of her body. She was able to give firefighters a name, but after interviewing more than 150 people, authorities still haven't been able to pin it to a specific person.

Her family isn't the same. Her friends, her community, the law enforcement on the case -- they've all been changed by the labyrinthine investigation that began that night.

'It has tormented me'

"It has been a year that I cannot find the words to express the loss of Jessica. It controls my every thought," Daugherty said. "I have been trying to keep her out in the spotlight. I have fought to remove people from profiting off of her name. My life is, every day, hoping I will wake up and hear my daughter has justice."

Read an article this morning about Jessica.  Sure doesn't appear that local police can/will solve this case.  In a small town it should be easy to solve this.  I don't put much stock in their law enforcement.

FBI: Investigation into teen burned alive yields gun, drug arrests

JACKSON, Miss. -- The investigation into the murder of a Mississippi teen who was burned alive has resulted in the arrests of 17 suspected gang members, though none are charged in her death, reports The Clarion-Ledger.

The FBI says the men have been charged in north Mississippi as a part of a major operation targeting suspected gang members called "Operation Bite Back."

FBI Special Agent in Charge Don Alway announced the indictments on Tuesday.

Officials say the operation focuses on Panola County and is a byproduct of the deep investigation that has come through the probe into the death of Jessica Chambers, a 19-year-old woman burned alive on Dec. 6, 2014, in Courtland. Just after 8 p.m., Chambers was doused with gasoline and set on fire in her car next to the gate to private land, police said. She got out of the car and was found on the road with burns over most of her body. She died hours later at a hospital in Memphis.

Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby told The Clarion-Ledger Tuesday's arrests are not directly related to Chambers' death, but to information gathered as authorities have interviewed more than 150 people and sorted through more than 20,000 phone records trying to find her killer.

FBI spokesman Jason Pack said as the FBI assisted state and local investigators, suspected illegal activity came to light and resulted in the indictments and arrests Tuesday morning. The indictments in both the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi and Mississippi's 17th Circuit Court District charge the 17 suspects on a variety of violations ranging from child endangerment, possession of stolen firearms, narcotics sales and felon in possession of a firearm to possession of counterfeit currency.

According to MDOC records, Gregory Andrews and Janicholas Scott were both on parole for previous drug charges. The Clarion-Ledger has reached out to MDOC to see whether any of the others have records with the state.

SWAT teams from the Mississippi Highway Patrol and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics joined three FBI SWAT teams to make the arrests, Pack said. He said some of the suspects were picked up by local authorities on federal writs, six were previously indicted on state charges stemming from the operation and the remaining nine were picked up Tuesday morning. Some have since bonded out.

Mississippi authorities investigating last year's brutal murder of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers say they know who she was with during the so-called "mystery hour" before she showed up at Herron Road in Courtland, where she was found burned alive in her car last December 6.

Investigators have established an in-depth timeline for Jessica's last day alive, but have been seeking more information about what she was doing between 6:30 until 7:32 p.m., when she arrived on Herron Road.

"That hour holds the key to solving our case," District Attorney John Champion tells PEOPLE. Now that authorities believe they know who Jessica was with, Champion tells PEOPLE, "I'm cautiously optimistic."

After a passing motorist called 911, first responders discovered Chambers clinging to life with wounds covering 98 percent of her body. A source at the scene tells PEOPLE that when first responders found Chambers barely clinging to life, she whispered one word: a man's name, either, "Eric" or "Derrick." Champion tells PEOPLE he has heard that detail, but he can't confirm its validity.

Though she graduated from high school with A's and B's and held down a job, Chambers was running with a rough crowd prior to her death, an ex-boyfriend tells PEOPLE.

"I think she was making friends with the wrong people, with drug dealers," ex-boyfriend Bryan Rudd tells PEOPLE.

But he adds that "she did nothing that was bad to get herself burnt alive."

A Panola County native suspected in another homicide has been indicted in the Dec. 2014 burning death of Courtland teen Jessica Chambers.

Quinton Tellis, 27, originally of Courtland, was indicted on capital murder charges by a special grand jury in Panola County as he sat in the Ouachita Parish Jail in Monroe, Louisiana, where he is being held on charges connected to the August 2015 death of a University of Louisiana Monroe exchange student.

Tellis is believed to have been the last person to have been with Chambers the night she was killed. The two allegedly had a relationship in the weeks leading up to her death, officials said.

While the Chambers and Tellis were eight years apart in age, they both went to South Panola High School and both grew up in the same neighborhood.

A press conference in Panola County is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Tellis was living in Monroe with new wife when he was arrested by Monroe Police Department and charged with crimes connected to the stabbing death of Meing-Chen Hsiao, 34, of Taiwan. Local media reports say she had been missing for more than a week when her body was found August 8, 2015, stabbed to death in her apartment.

Police said Hsiao's homicide appeared to be very personal.

Tellis has not been charged with her murder, but according to jail records, he has been charged with three counts of unauthorized use of an access card and one count of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

The police report says Tellis allegedly used a Chase Bank debit card belonging to Hsiao on August 7 at around 11 p.m. On that transaction, he charged $.07. When it was used again on August 18, it was allegedly used at 10:35 p.m. for $500 and again at 3:04 a.m. for another $500. Police said there were ATM surveillance photos of Tellis using the card, and after being Mirandized, he allegedly admitted to using the debit card on all three occasions.

A search warrant was served on his house and authorities found 1/4 pound of marijuana in a bedroom. The report says the drugs were packaged for sale.

According to Tellis' Facebook page, he married his fiancee on or around Aug. 8, on or around the day Hsiao's body was found.

"This has been the most unusual case that I've ever dealt with," Champion said. "Obviously, the nature of how she died was very brutal, very horrendous."

Champion told reporters that Tellis and Chambers knew each other and were friends, but he would not describe a motive. Champion did say he believed it was a "personal crime" and not related to drug or gang activity. The prosecutor also said he would not reveal to reporters what Chambers had told firefighters who had arrived at the scene.

The horrific circumstances surrounding the young woman's death garnered national attention and cast light on concerns about violent crime in rural towns like Courtland, where Chambers and Tellis lived.

UNION, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A Union County woman is going to prison for attempting to profit off the murder of Panola County teenager, Jessica Chambers, by using the murder as a way to fraudulently collect donations.

41-year-old Janet Lee Posey pleaded guilty Monday to one count of false pretense.  Posey was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with three of those years suspended, leaving seven years to serve.

She was ordered to serve three years of post-release supervision and pay $1,433 in court costs.

Posey was arrested in December 2014 by investigators with the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division and the Union County Sheriff's Office following an investigation that revealed Posey had started a fraudulent internet scam after the murder of 19-year-old Chambers. The investigation revealed that Posey attempted to collect donations for the family without their consent or knowledge.

“This defendant posed as a family member of the victim and created a Facebook page in an attempt to convince people to donate money to her, where she intended to take it for her own personal use,” Attorney General Hood said. “Her acts are reprehensible. Fortunately, we caught her before she raised any money. We thank Judge Gregory for his strong sentence, and I would like to thank Sheriff Jimmy Edwards and his deputies for their dedication and assistance on this case."

HERNANDO -- A man accused of committing the notorious burning death of a Mississippi teen in 2014 entered a not guilty plea in court Friday.

Quinton Tellis, 27, is charged with capital murder, accused of setting Jessica Chambers, 19, on fire on a rural road in Courtland. She was found with burns over 98 percent of her body, officials said.

Tellis entered a DeSoto County courtroom in his orange jumpsuit with his attorneys Darla Palmer and Alton Peterson. He nodded to members of his family, who were seated on the front row on the left side of the court, across from Chambers' family. When he entered, Jessica's stepmother Debbie Chambers put her arm around her father, Ben Chambers, but Chambers' family was otherwise stoic.

He entered his plea through Palmer and was escorted back out of the courtroom.

Authorities said they expected Tellis to plead not guilty, as he has not so far admitted to killing Chambers.

Tellis, originally of Courtland, was indicted on capital murder charges by a special grand jury in Panola County in February as he sat in the Ouachita Parish Jail in Monroe, Louisiana, where he was being held on charges connected to the stabbing death of Meing-Chen Hsiao, 34, of Taiwan.

Officials returned Tellis to Mississippi in June. He was charged with murder in Hsiao's death in July.

Chambers was with Tellis the night she died, by his own admission, officials said. The two allegedly had a relationship in the weeks leading up to her death.

For a year, Quinton Tellis has lived in the DeSoto County Jail for crimes he is accused of in Panola County.

Authorities won't say why he's being kept there, but the Panola County Jail might not be a comfortable place for a guy whose alleged crimes have opened up a Pandora's box of arrests and investigations still ongoing throughout his home county into drugs and gang activity.

There's also the fact Jessica Chambers, the woman he's accused of killing, is the daughter of a man who works for the Panola County Sheriff's Department.

Meanwhile, DeSoto County officials say they have had no incidents involving Tellis in the year he's been with them, despite Mississippi Department of Corrections records that show Tellis in past incarcerations was written up for various violations, including refusing to work, threatening statements toward staff, disruptive behavior and abusive language.

Chambers, 19, was found on Herron Road in Courtland a little after 8 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2014, walking away from her burning vehicle with burns over 98 percent of her body. She was flown to a Memphis hospital, where she died just hours later. Coroner Gracie Gulledge said the cause of the young woman's death was thermal injury.

Authorities worked leads and chased the killer for 14 months after Chambers' death, ultimately arresting Tellis. It was an investigation that brought in local, state and federal agencies on personal, forensic and technological levels. A team of investigators from the Panola County Sheriff's Department, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. attorney's office dug into Chambers' death. A marked lack of street chatter, possibly attributable to Tellis' solitary personality, made the case tougher to crack, causing much of the investigation to hinge on data collection.

On Feb. 23, 2016, a news conference was held to announce Tellis' indictment. It was an unforeseen development for many of the amateur sleuths who had begun to follow the case online, as Tellis' name had not come up publicly during the investigation.

Initially, speculation swirled around whether the homicide could have been gang-related, and local gang leaders came out of the woodwork to assure authorities and the Chambers family they had nothing to do with it. Tellis appears to be a validated member of the Insane Vice Lords street gang, but officials have said Chambers' death is most likely related to the fact she and Tellis were linked romantically, and not to any gang-related motivation.

But the task at hand stands. Tellis faces trial on Oct. 9, three days after he turns 28 years old, and three years to the day since his last release from MDOC custody.

"One hundred percent," Darby said of his confidence that Tellis will be convicted. "We have remarkable, fascinating testimony to present. This is the most difficult case I’ve ever been associated with, and you get a satisfaction in knowing that looking back, this was an excellent investigation."

Tellis' attorney, Alton Peterson, has not responded to calls seeking comment.

Chambers' parents, Ben Chambers and Lisa Daugherty, once somewhat vocal, now keep their opinions, hopes and fears to themselves.

Despite their silence, visits to their social media pages show Jessica is never far from their minds. They marked her 22nd birthday on Feb. 2, as they had grieved the two previous ones that she was not there to celebrate with them. They spent another Christmas without her. Christmas was her favorite holiday, Daugherty had previously said.

After the indictment, they stopped talking to the media, saying it's best for the investigation. District Attorney John Champion agrees.

"Right now we’re just trying to make sure all the things are done the way they’re supposed to be done. We're not trying to put any more information out there than isn't already out there," Champion said.

The prosecution has met all of its discovery requirements, Champion said. He's ready to go forward whenever the time comes.

It's likely a jury will have to be drawn from outside Panola County, officials said, as it's probably impossible to find anyone who's not familiar in one way or another with the case. After all, Courtland is a town of a little less than 500. Panola County is about 34,000. And the case has been the subject of not only local and state coverage, but several national news programs.

What isn't clear at this point is where Tellis will ultimately end up if he's convicted. He's charged with murder in Louisiana in the death of Meing-Chen Hsaio, 34, of Taiwan. But he hasn't been indicted in Hsaio's death, which court documents say was slow and painful. She was allegedly tortured to death for her credit card PIN numbers.

The homicide allegedly took place on July 29, and her body was found Aug. 8. As authorities were working the homicide scene, Tellis was celebrating his wedding to girlfriend Chikita Jackson.

He pleaded guilty to using Hsaio's credit cards on May 9 and was sentenced as a habitual offender in Louisiana. A timeline on any further indictment or trial is not clear, though one thing is.

"We're taking him first," Champion said.

Tellis trial set for Oct. 10 with jury from Pike County

The long anticipated trial for the man accused in the 2014 murder of Jessica Chambers is scheduled to begin Tuesday, October 10 in Batesville in front of jurors chosen the day before in Pike County, according to District Attorney John Champion.

Quinton Verdell Tellis of Courtland was indicted for capital murder in February, 2016 following a 14-month investigation by local, state and federal authorities. Tellis was charged with setting fire to Chambers in her car near Courtland on December 6, 2014.

Tellis, accompanied by his attorney, Darla Palmer of Jackson, met with Circuit Judge Gerald Chatham and Champion for a status conference in the Batesville courthouse Tuesday. Champion said that 12 Pike County residents plus a couple of alternates will be chosen as jurors during voir dire in McComb Monday, October 9. Jurors will be brought to Batesville by bus that evening for the trial.

The jury will be sequestered for the duration of the trial which is expected to last up to 14 days, according to the district attorney.

Panola County Circuit Clerk Melissa Meek-Phelps, who will be responsible for much of juror logistics, said that she has been scrambling to secure enough Batesville motel rooms for the jurors. The trial date overlaps an Ole Miss home game weekend with Vanderbilt which normally fills Batesville hotels and motels to capacity. The circuit clerk said that she expects the trial to cost Panola County at least $18,000 in lodging expense alone.

The search for Chambers’ killer turned into the most extensive investigation in Panola County’s history, eventually developing into a task force that included the FBI, MBI, ATF, Miss. Crime Lab, U.S. Attorney, State Coroner’s office, U.S. Marshal’s Service, the Panola County Sheriff’s Dept., Batesville Police Dept. along with Champion’s 17th Judicial District Attorney office.

Investigators painstakingly pieced together the forensic evidence and data, according to Champion during a press conference last year when Tellis’ indictment was announced. The evidence led back to Tellis, who had first been interviewed by investigators in December, 2014.

“This has been the most unusual case that I’ve ever dealt with,” Champion told reporters at that Feb., 2016 press conference.

Chambers’ murder and the long investigation brought international attention to the crime, interest that is expected to be rekindled by Tellis’ October trial.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - FOX13 News has learned the capital murder trial of Quinton Tellis, the man charged in the fiery death of Jessica Chambers, is set to go to trial Tuesday, October 10th.

Major Barry Thompson, the lead investigator in the case, is the man in charge of security.

FOX13 spoke one-on-one with the cases' lead investigator, Major Barrry Thompson, who's also in charge of security for the trial.

" I have a plan that I don't want anyone that might try to do something to halter this trial or this jury to think we are going to do the same thing every day to where they can plan something," Thompson said.

 Thompson told FOX13 he is going to be using other law enforcement resources available to secure the courthouse.

"We are going to use our off duty officers and plain clothes officers from the investigative division also Jimmy Mccleod with the city of Batesville is going to donate some people for outside perimeter." Thompson said.

The trial we found out could be a lengthy one lasting from 8-14 days I found out through court documents the state as Subpoenaed some 40 witnesses.

"Of course as a primary witness in the case I will be with primary witnesses for most of the time in preparation. And with the sheriff I will be heading up Security, " Thompson said.

 The jury we found out is being picked out of Pike County, Mississippi. Thompson would not discuss how they would be moved to the courthouse. The only thing certain in his security plan has built in changes.

"So if they see something on Monday or Tuesday they won't see it on Wednesday or Thursday," Thompson said.

A jury has been seated in the capital murder case of a teenager brutally burned to death in Panola County almost three years ago.

Quinton Tellis is accused in the death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers of Courtland and faces the death penalty if convicted.

Of the seven men and five women selected, six are black and six are white.

Pike County has a similar demographic to Panola, and jurors had to be pulled from outside the north Mississippi area because of pre-trial publicity. Court officials said the jurors were to be sent to Panola County Monday night.

There, in a trial expected to last two weeks, they will decide Tellis' fate. The trial could go through the weekend should the judge so decide.

The trial began at the Panola County Courthouse in Batesville Tuesday afternoon.

In opening arguments Tuesday afternoon, Tellis' attorney, Darla Palmer, laid the groundwork for presenting an alibi for Tellis with purchase of the pre-paid debit card.

Palmer also said the name Chambers uttered in her final moments points to someone other than her client. According to Palmer, at least eight first responders will testify that Chambers said someone named "Eric" set her on fire.

"'Eric set me on fire.' She didn't say any other name, she didn't mention any other person," Palmer said. "She said 'Eric did this to me.'...She didn't know the person's last name. She knew Quinton. Quinton Tellis is his name."

Prosecutors, however, believe Tellis is responsible for Chambers' death, pointing to a "number of lies" they allege Tellis told law enforcement in the months after Chambers' death as well as cellphone data they claim puts Chambers and Tellis together throughout that December day.

District Attorney John Champion said he believes Tellis and Chambers had sex in the passenger seat of her car before she was smothered by Tellis and then set on fire. He did not offer motive or evidence Tuesday that showed she was smothered.

Champion acknowledged Chambers said a name to first responders but said, by the end of the trial, the evidence "will change your mind, I can promise you."

After opening remarks by Champion and Palmer, Chambers' mother, Lisa Chambers, best friend Kesha Myers, passerby Glen Williams and first responder Cole Haley took the stand for the prosecution.

BATESVILLE, Miss. — It was an emotional second day in court as several witnesses choked up on the stand recalling the night Jessica Chambers was discovered with severe burns to her body.

Seth Cook, a volunteer with the Courtland Fire Department, told the jury he was on duty and responded to reports of a car fire that tragic night in December 2014. He said when he arrived, he immediately noticed the burning vehicle and began assessing the scene, saying the fire appeared to be contained within the vehicle.

That’s when he noticed someone coming out of the woods 30 to 40 feet down the road. Cook stated he couldn’t tell who it was at first, but soon realized it was a woman who was unclothed except for a pair of underwear. Trance like, she was having trouble walking and had severe burns all over her skin. Some of her skin was already peeling back in some places.

Cook immediately got a blanket and helped lay her down behind the engine, then worked to contain the blaze.

When asked if he knew Jessica, Cook stated the two had attended the same school, but her burns were so bad he didn’t recognize her and was unaware she was the one injured until later that night.​

The second witness, another firefighter named Daniel Cole, went into detail about the scene, which he described as a “mad house”.

He said it was extremely difficult to hear Jessica’s breathy answers with the diesel engine and the shear chaos of the scene. It took multiple attempts to even get her name correct. At first, it sounded like she was saying Katina, Katrina or Courtney. Cole had to get down on the ground next to her before he heard Jessica.

When he asked who did this, they once again struggled through multiple attempts before he heard “Eric did this to me. Eric set me on fire.”

The victim’s family and friends were in tears as Prosecutor Don Champion showed one photo taken of Jessica’s injuries by the firefighter and another taken later at the hospital.

During cross examination, the defense asked about reports that a suspicious person had been on the scene that night. He confirmed he received the information along with tag numbers.

DAY THREE: Jury visits ‘key locations’ in Jessica Chambers case

BATESVILLE, Miss. — It’s day three of the Jessica Chambers murder trial in Panola County, Mississippi.

On Thursday, members of the jury were taken to “key locations” in the area:

•Panola County Impound Lot: The jury was allowed to look over Chambers’ car, which Barry Thompson with the Panola County Sheriff’s Office said had rusted a great deal from being outside in the elements.
•Fire Scene: The jury was able to look over the scene. It was pointed out that a tree nearby has little life left because of the damage caused by the fire. It’s now adorned with a cross someone painted on it. Thompson testified Chambers was treated by first responders approximately 40 feet away.
•Herron Road: Only a few hundred feet from the fire scene, this is where Chambers’ keys were found. The defense questioned the integrity of the evidence since it had been moved by the man who made the discovery.
•Property of D. Cole: Jurors were driven to an access road that connects this property to the house where the defendant’s sister lived at the time. Thompson said there was no evidence Tellis was ever on the road.
•Otto Stanford Subdivision: Where Tellis’ sister lived at the time. Thompson stated again there was evidence that Tellis was on the road or at the house the night of the crime.
•M&M Grocery:  Thompson testified that there was a camera that was pointing toward Tellis’ driveway, but the defense quickly pointed out there were several areas that were not in view.
•Tellis Home: Across the street from the grocery store. The jury was allowed to walk the property and then taken to an area behind the home where Tellis had previously admitted to have sex with Chambers.

Jessica Chambers' burn injuries, suspect’s phone in spotlight

The third day of Quinton Tellis' murder trial started with jurors exploring the area where Jessica Chambers was burned alive.

The jurors loaded into the three vans and explored seven different locations Thursday morning. They saw the area where Chambers was found, the M & M convenience store where she was last seen, and where Tellis lived. During the field trips, prosecutors and defense attorneys questioned an investigator about the areas.

After lunch, the trial moved back into the courtroom and featured medical professionals, including Regional Medical Center's burn center director, who said that he didn't think Chambers would've been able to clearly speak to first responders due to the extent of her injuries.

So far, testimony has centered around witness after witness testifying that Chambers was able to say her name and the name of the man who set her on fire, "Eric," despite being horribly burned and nearly inaudible.

Mary Beth Hall, a registered nurse who was on duty when Chambers arrived at the hospital, was the first to testify Thursday.

Hall said she and her attending doctor did not believe Chambers would survive her injuries. Chambers was burned so badly her chest could not expand enough to allow air into her lungs. She was burned on 93 percent of her body.

Hall and the doctor began what they call "comfort care" with Chambers and her family. "Comfort care" is a process where the patient and their family is made as comfortable as possible until the end of the patient's life. Chambers died at 2:36 a.m. the same night she was brought to the hospital

Katheryn Rodgers, a forensic DNA analyst from Scales Biological Laboratory, took the stand next. She was asked to define DNA to help the jury understand the results of the laboratory results.

Rodgers said she analyzed Jessica’s keys that had been thrown in a ditch for DNA. She said their lab ran two DNA tests, autosomal (atDNA) and Y-chromosome (Y-DNA.)

She said she found Y chromosomes in the DNA samples on the keys, and she found four individual DNA samples with Y chromosomes on the keys.

Rodgers said the lab was able to obtain a DNA profile and Y chromosome mixture on the keys.

She testified that Quinton Tellis’ DNA was found on Jessica’s keys.

“Quinton Tellis could not be excluded,” Rodgers said.

The trial ended for the day around 7 p.m. and will resume Friday at 9 a.m.

BATESVILLE, Miss. — Day four in the Jessica Chambers murder trial is underway.

Before the court proceedings started, the state revealed a piece of clothing and a bucket that was sent to the ATF for analysis was lost or went missing. They asked the judge to allow their expert witness, Matthew Simon, to go ahead and testify about that evidence even though it wasn’t in the courtroom.

The judge allowed the testimony.

On the stand, Simon stated he was given a piece of material that tested positive for gasoline. The prosecution said it was a piece of Chambers’ clothing while the defense pointed out the item was so badly burned the witness couldn’t say with any certainty what it was.

Gasoline was detected on a piece of clothing found at the scene where a Mississippi woman was fatally burned, but other items submitted for testing didn’t have the ignitable liquid on them, a forensic analyst testified Friday.

Phones reveal timeline of Chambers, Tellis whereabouts

BATESVILLE — There have been questions throughout the Jessica Chambers capital murder trial as to whether the defendant, Quinton Tellis, was with Chambers the night she died.

In his first interviews with officials, he didn't mention seeing her after lunch that day. Later his story changed, and he said he'd met her in Batesville. The next story was that he had ridden with her to Batesville, and most recently he admitted that they were together at or near his house that night.

On Saturday, the fifth day of the trial, a federal intelligence analyst showed how the cellphone and video data told another story — one that said Tellis and Chambers were together when she was set on fire. Paul Rowlett told the jury that analyzing data can be like putting together puzzle pieces when you have 50 1,000 piece puzzles and no box to look at. It's a system of figuring out which pieces fit together and which could be eliminated, he explained.

The timeline could be considered to have strengthened the prosecution's case considerably as it shows Tellis and Chambers together through the evening of her death using multiple kinds of cellphone data, including RTTs, or "range to tower" information which shows a general location of where a Verizon user is. Another kind of data shows where a user is when his or her phone is active.

That data draws a clearer picture, tracking both Chambers and Tellis through that Saturday.  There's also the video from the M&M gas station, which shows Tellis when he visited the store multiple times that day. It also shows vehicles pulling in and out of his driveway at strategic moments, including one time prosecutors say Tellis was driving his sister's vehicle to a storage shed on his property where he told FBI agents he kept a 5-gallon gas can.

Chambers' phone stayed active during the time she was with Tellis because she was trying to reach a friend who had run out of minutes on her phone.

Testimony started Saturday with Alton Peterson, Tellis' defense attorney, drilling on the question of the name "Eric" in cross examination of Mississippi Bureau of Investigations Detective Tim Douglas. He also asked about other suspects in the case and whether they had been investigated thoroughly.

In testimony on Saturday, federal intelligence analyst Paul Rowlett laid out a timeline of Jessica Chambers' and Quinton Tellis' moves on Chambers' last day on earth.

The timeline included cell phone data, security video, and phone and text records. To the best of our ability, here's a recreation from the 96-page Power Point slideshow that was presented in court by Rowlett.

12/02/14 - Jessica goes to the emergency room for some medicine. By his own admission and by telephone data confirmation, Tellis accompanies her.

12/03/14 - The first time Chambers' texts show Tellis asking her for sex.

"I'm horny," he texts, to which Chambers replies, "Oh Lord." The conversation continues, and Chambers points out that his mother and sister are home and that they would "freak out." Prosecution says this establishes that Chambers will not go to Tellis' home while his family is there.

12/04/14 - Chambers has broken the screen on her phone, making some conversations more garbled and stunted.

"I'm horny," Tellis allegedly texts again, to which Chambers replies once more, "Oh Lord."

12/05/14 - In a text conversation, Chambers asks for money to eat. Tellis responds with a sexual proposition. She tells him she only needs about $6. Minutes later, surveillance video at the M&M gas station shows Tellis walking across the street to where Chambers' car has come into view, and then he walks back to his driveway.

12/06/14

12:32 - 10:04 a.m. - Tellis is making calls that are bouncing off a tower in Pope, which indicates he is either at his home, or across the street at the M&M gas station.

8:55 a.m. - Tellis on video at M&M getting breakfast wearing white shirt and shoes and a dark dew rag and jeans.

9:01 - 9:02 a.m. - Jessica wakes up and sends a text. Cell phone data shows she is at her home on Carlisle Road.

9:06 a.m. - Tellis' mother's white Chevrolet Suburban leaves his house and heads up Highway 51.

10:04 a.m. - Chambers calls Tellis and the call lasts for 69 seconds.

10:08 a.m. - Chambers is on the cameras at M&M making a purchase.

10:09 a.m. - Tellis texts Chambers, "I'm ready."

10:10 a.m. - Chambers is on cameras at M&M talking to two acquaintances.  No one else is with her. She leaves from there and can be seen pulling into Tellis' driveway. From there they head south on Highway 51.

10:15 - 10:47 a.m. - Chambers and Tellis are driving circles on Courtland backroads.

10:18 a.m. - Chambers calls Kesha Myers.

10:33 a.m. - Chambers calls Myer again. At some point they pick her up.

10:47 a.m. - Tellis calls his sister LaQuinta Tellis.

10:49 a.m. - Chambers drops Tellis off at M&M. She and Myers leave from there.

10:55 a.m. - Tellis walks back to M&M and has changed clothes. He is now wearing black shoes, lighter pants, a red shirt and hat, and a plaid coat.

11:05 a.m. - 5:29 p.m. - Chambers is home. Tellis is texting, "I need you," to which Chambers responds, "What you need?" "Some lovin'," he replies. She answers, "Oh Lord. Can't."

2:21 p.m. - 4:23 p.m. - Chambers' phone is silent. Mother Lisa Daugherty says she was taking a nap.

4:23 p.m. - Tellis calls and wakes Chambers up.

3:24 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. - Records show Chakita Jackson, Tellis' then-girlfriend in Monroe, Louisiana is trying to contact him to get him to send her money so she can come visit him.

4:09 p.m. - Jackson texts, "I'm trying to come up. Call me."

4:21 to 5:34 p.m. - Tellis' phone is showing that he is at home.

4:23 - 4:29 p.m. - Chambers is trying to reach Myers, whose phone is out of minutes.

4:32 - 4:36 p.m. - Chambers tells Tellis via text that she will go get something to eat with him if he'll pay for it. She's still trying to reach Myers.

4:59 p.m. - A 33 second conversation between Chambers and Tellis.

5:08 - 5:11 p.m. - Tellis can be seen on security video walking to M&M, still wearing the red outfit. He paces around inside and stands outside, but doesn't make a purchase.

5:12 p.m. - Tellis walks south. It is dark.

5:20 p.m. - Tellis calls Chambers, and it appears from the length of the call she doesn't answer. She calls him right back.

5:24 - 5:30 p.m. - Security video shows Chambers is at the store. She talks with someone off screen, she picks up a penny, she goes inside and makes a purchase, she comes out and pumps gas.

5:29 p.m. - Both cameras and phone records show Chambers making a call to Tellis. She pulls out of M&M and heads south down Highway 51.

5:34 p.m. - Tellis calls Chambers back. This is the last call he will make for the next 48 minutes. He tells investigators in his last interview in January 2016 that he was calling her to come pick him up.

6 - 6:01 p.m. - Chambers phone shows she is on her way to Batesville.

6:04 - 6:11 p.m. - Chambers' phone shifts to the towers that cover the area of Batesville that includes Taco Bell, which is where Tellis told investigators they ate dinner. During this time she continues to try to reach Myers.

6:17 p.m. - Tellis calls his sister. Phone data shows he and Chambers leave the Taco Bell area and head back south. The phone switches towers during the call. It’s the only call or text by Tellis between 5:34 and 7:42 p.m.

6:22 - 6:25 p.m. - Chambers is still trying to reach Myers.

6:30 p.m. - Cell site data shows Tellis and Chambers arrive back in Courtland around that time. Tellis says they went back to his house. His mother's white Suburban is at the house. The area where he admitted to investigators that he had sex with Chambers is right behind the house, but can't be seen from the house. Her phone is also registering her just south of M&M, which is the same area Tellis described. Tellis tells investigators during this time the two are allegedly smoking marijuana in Chambers' car.

6:41 p.m. - Chambers is still trying to reach Myers.

6:48 p.m. - Chambers makes the last call she will ever make to her mother. The call lasts 76 seconds. Her mother said there was no background noise and no music, which was unusual and led her to believe Chambers was with someone. By Tellis' admission, he and Chambers were together at that point.

6:49 - 7:26 p.m. -  Neither Tellis or Chambers are using their phones. During the time between 6:55 p.m. and 7:41 p.m., five different women are trying to reach Tellis. He does not answer any of them. One of those was Jackson saying, "Oh well," presumably because she can't get in touch with him about coming to visit.

7:10 p.m. - A vehicle can be seen leaving Tellis' residence. He tells investigators that's his Uncle Sammy.

7:26 p.m. - Headlights appear and leave the driveway next to Tellis' house, the area where he and Chambers were supposed to be together. Security video is too dark and grainy to see what kind of car, but authorities point out that the woman who lives there is at work and Tellis' sister is inside the store.

7:29 p.m. - According to video, Tellis' mother's vehicle leaves the home, goes to M&M where she will stay for around 20 minutes.

7:30 p.m. - Chambers' cell phone patterns have shifted dramatically west. Then she's on the scene on Herron Road where she would be set on fire.

7:42 p.m. - Tellis’ phone "wakes up." He calls Chambers and leaves a voice mail. Then he follows with a text that says “Bae my friend is coming over tonight, I’ll call you tomorrow. Good night, sweet dreams.”

Tellis would later tell investigators that he was letting Chambers know that a girlfriend was coming over, and he named an in-town girlfriend. When questioned if that girlfriend would confirm his alibi, he changed his story and said it was Jackson.

7:46 p.m. - Tellis calls Jackson, tells her he is walking to his sister's house to borrow her Tahoe. Investigators point out that there is a cut-through trail that leads from where Chambers was found on Herron Road to the subdivision in which Tellis' sister lives. Chambers' keys would later be found in a yard along that route.

His cell data shows no communication to ask his sister if he can use her car, which investigators say he's only borrowed it once before when he took it to wash for her.

7:46 - 8 p.m. - Tellis' phone is silent again.

7:50 - 7:52 p.m. - A vehicle can be seen on M&M security video pulling into Tellis' driveway to a storage shed, and remains there for 1:42. Tellis told FBI agents in an early interview that he keeps a 5-gallon gas can in that shed.

7:52 p.m. - A vehicle can be seen on M&M video coming out of the driveway and it heads toward Batesville at a high rate of speed. Tellis told investigators in a later interview that it "could be" him going to get a Green Dot card to send Jackson so she can come visit.

8:04 p.m. - Chambers' phone's last communications ever with a cell tower. Investigators say it shut off when it got too hot.

8:07 p.m. - Phone call made to 911 by LaTroy Rudd and Glenn Williams, who see the burning car and call it in.

8:09 p.m. - Responders arrive on the scene where Chambers is found burned beyond recognition and her car is still on fire.

8:15 - 8:23 p.m. - Cell phone data confirms Tellis' story that he is going to Piggly Wiggly and finally to Fred's to buy the cash card. He calls Jackson during this time. Investigators say he called Jackson five times between 8 p.m. and 8:23 p.m. after having not spoken to her between 4:25 p.m. and 7:46 p.m.

In the video from Fred's, Tellis is wearing the red outfit but without the jacket.

8:26 p.m. - Tellis purchased the Green Dot card.

8:57 p.m. - Tellis shows up back on camera at M&M, and he has on white shoes, jeans, white shirt, and new lighter colored jacket. He later told investigators he took a bath before he changed clothes.

A man on the camera is telling a dramatic story, appears to be describing the crime scene. Tellis does not interact with him, does not appear to have any lengthy conversations at M&M. Tellis later told investigators when he walked back over to M&M was when he heard about Chambers' death.

Prosecution notes that in spite of being in constant contact with Chambers that day, Tellis did not attempt to call or text her when he allegedly heard she'd been hurt. Sometime in the days that followed, Tellis admits to having deleted Chambers' texts, calls, and contact information from his phone. The information connecting them and detailing their calls and conversations were pulled from Chambers' phone and Tellis' phone company records.

9:53 p.m. - Jackson receives the money from the Green Dot card. It's unclear when Tellis actually gave her the information.

BATESVILLE, Miss. — The trial of Quinton Tellis, who has pleaded not guilty to capital murder in the burning death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers in Panola County, Mississippi, continues today.

As soon as the jury entered the courtroom Sunday, the state rested and the defense did not call any witnesses. Tellis will not testify.

The jury has been sent to the jury room.

Defense has asked the court to direct a verdict of not guilty. The judge said that there is a case and denied the motion for acquittal.

BATESVILLE, Miss. — Jury deliberations began around 4 p.m. Sunday in the Jessica Chambers capital murder trial, about three hours after closing arguments from attorneys concluded.

Quinton Tellis, 29, who pleaded not guilty to capital murder in the burning death of the 19-year-old on Dec. 6, 2014, in Courtland, did not take the stand during the trial that started Monday.

On Sunday, prosecution reiterated the timeline established through phone data and video evidence while the defense contended that failures in the investigation missed a crucial suspect — the mysterious "Eric."

Defense attorneys Darla Palmer and Alton Peterson hammered again and again on the fact that at least eight first responders said they believe Chambers said the name "Eric" in her dying declarations at the scene where she was found burned alive.

A second day of jury deliberation began Monday in the trial of a Mississippi man charged in the burning death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers.

Jurors deliberated more than four hours Sunday without reaching a verdict at the trial in Batesville, about 50 miles south of Memphis

Prosecutors claim Tellis lied repeatedly to investigators about spending time with Chambers, a former high school cheerleader, in the hours before she was found on Dec. 6, 2014 -- presenting cellphone data to show their phones were in close proximity the night of the murder.

Prosecutor John Champion told jurors that Tellis mistakenly believed he had suffocated Chambers before lighting her on fire along a rural Mississippi road in Courtland, where she lived with her family.

But defense attorneys said Chambers told firefighters on the scene that a man named "Eric" set her on fire -- not the man charged with her murder. Several first responders testified that Chambers -- her lips charred and barely able to speak -- said the name "Eric" when asked who did this to her and did not provide a last name.

Chamber's friend, Kesha Meyer, testified that she had never heard Chambers refer to Quinton Tellis as "Eric." She also said Chambers was selling marijuana in the six months before she was killed. 

The state also relied on testimony from nationally renowned burn expert Dr. William Hickerson, who said Chambers would probably not be able to speak clearly -- given the soot inside her throat and severity of her injuries.

Law enforcement, including Mississippi Bureau of Investigation agent Tim Douglas, also testified that hundreds of Erics and Dereks were ruled out in the months-long investigation that led to Tellis' indictment. He said investigators pursued leads in places as far away was Des Moines, Iowa, and Chatanooga, Tenn.

Douglas acknowledged he spent "several days" interviewing a local man named Eric who had interactions with Jessica, but told jurors, "He absolutely was eliminated 100 percent."

Tellis could face life in prison without parole if convicted.

BATESVILLE, Miss. — After about 10 hours of deliberation, the family of Jessica Chambers is no closer to closure.

Monday, the Panola County courtroom could only be characterized as confused as the murder trial wrapped up.

Quinton Tellis is charged with capital murder, accused of dousing Chambers with gasoline then setting her on fire, leaving her to die in Courtland, Mississippi back in 2014.

The trial troubles started when the jury entered the courtroom and the foreman answered the judge that they had reached a unanimous verdict.

But one juror spoke up: “We all didn’t agree on it!”

The judge was forced to push the jury back to deliberations three times because they couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict.

The judge declared a mistrial, saying the jury was “hopelessly deadlocked,” after dismissing them and thanking them for serving.

District Attorney John Champion later said the state plans on trying the case again.

BATESVILLE, Miss. (AP) — The jury in the tense murder trial of a Mississippi man charged with setting a 19-year-old friend on fire and leaving her to die handed a bailiff a note: They have reached a verdict.

What followed was confusion.

Before the decision was read, Judge Gerald Chatham asked if the 12-person panel had unanimously agreed on a verdict. A male juror spoke the shocking words: “We didn’t all agree.”

That started a chain of events that led to a hung jury and a mistrial in the murder trial of Quinton Tellis and sparked a wave of emotions for his family and the relatives of Jessica Chambers. For the Chambers family, it ended up being pain and frustration. For relatives of Tellis, it was relief and joy.

After the verdict disagreement, the judge asked the panel to continue deliberating. Shortly afterward, a court clerk read what was believed to be the final verdict: Not guilty.

Tellis’ relatives smiled. Chambers’ family cried.

Then, the judge polled the jury. Seven for guilty, five for not guilty.

Spectators looked at each other in dismay. How could the verdict be not guilty, if seven people said guilty?

The jury had been instructed by the judge that, under the capital murder charge, all 12 of them must agree on a guilty verdict. But the instruction did not say that the entire panel of seven blacks and five whites also must unanimously agree on a not guilty verdict.

With corrected instructions in hand, it didn’t take long for the jury to tell the judge that it was hopelessly deadlocked. A mistrial was declared.

Tellis faces another murder indictment in Louisiana, where he’s accused in the torture death of Meing-Chen Hsiao, a 34-year-old Taiwanese graduate student at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. No trial date has been set in that case.

I thought that there would be a mistrial after the repeated instructions, too.  However, it was surprising that they didn't take more time to continue the deliberation about the evidence in order to come to a verdict.  jmo

Neither side could call it a win or a loss, but Monday's mistrial in the Jessica Chambers' homicide case left everyone at what felt like square one.

Panola County District Attorney John Champion says the accused, Quinton Verdell Tellis, will face trial again.

"I firmly believe in my case. I have no trepidation, no concerns about going forward with it again, and we’ll have to see what happens," he said. "As far as a bounce back strategy, we’ll go forward with the exact same strategy we did with the grand jury and in the first trial."

Tellis' attorney, Alton Peterson, says he's also ready to get back in front of a jury when the time comes. Like Champion, he said he has been confident in the foundation of his case from the beginning. He said there are facts in his client's favor that won't change, such as that 10 first responders testified Chambers' dying declaration is that someone named "Eric" set her on fire.

The case was emotionally exhausting not just for the families of Chambers and Tellis, but for those on both sides of the court case. Both indicated that they won't jump right back into it. They'll take a cool-down period to regroup before setting anything in stone.

"We’re going to wait a couple of weeks until we can sit down as a team and kinda go back over everything and have some time for reflection," Champion said.

As far as whether the case will definitely see a courtroom round two, Peterson said the decision to consider any deviation from the current plan to go forward will be up to Tellis.

"I never say what will or won’t happen, but that decision is up to Quinton. We’re going to advise him as best we can of what the possibilities are if he does this as opposed to that, and if he says, 'I’m not pleading guilty to something I didn’t do,' I don’t have a problem standing in front of a jury and doing this again," Peterson said. "His decision is the only one that really matters."

Champion said the case could go back to trial in the summer, but it's too early to tell.

"We've got to get with the judge and the defense lawyers to see what their schedules are like," Champion said

Tellis likely to remain in Mississippi until retrial

Quinton Tellis, who spent more than a year in the DeSoto County Jail before his capital murder trial for the burning death of Jessica Chambers, is back in Panola County custody.

District Atty. John Champion said Tuesday Tellis will most likely stay there unless Louisiana decides it wants him back for court action in that state.

"He's actually on loan to us from Louisiana," Champion said. "If the Department of Corrections there says they want him back, then they'll come and get him and we'll get him back again. But I don't think that'll happen. I highly suspect he's going to stay here until we try him again."

A Pike County jury was unable to reach a verdict during Tellis' trial in Batesville that ended Oct. 16 in a mistrial. Champion said immediately afterward that he would definitely retry the case.

Champion said Tuesday his team will assemble next week to begin talking about things, but it will most likely be sometime in November before attorneys meet with the judge and begin to sort out the retrial process.

Just last week District Attorney John Champion confirmed to WREG prosecutors are still seeking a capital murder charge in the case despite a jury being unable to reach a unanimous verdict several months ago.

District Attorney John Champion, who is leading the prosecution, said Monday Judge Gerald Chatham has yet to issue an order setting the venue.

Tellis, whose first trial in Batesville last October ended in a mistrial, is in the meantime serving a sentence on unrelated charges predating the Chambers case. Tellis is incarcerated at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman serving a five-year sentence for burglary larceny-unoccupied dwelling, according to Mississippi Department of Corrections records.

"Originally it was June," Champion said of the new trial date, "but the defense lawyer had a conflict — he had another trial — so we had to move it to September."

Prosecutors in the burning death of 19-year-old Jessica Chambers have new evidence they believe plugs a previous hole in their case, and it might not have gone public if not for Monday's hearing.

Quinton Tellis has pleaded not guilty to capital murder in Chambers' slaying. Prosecutors believe Tellis had sex with Chambers before he set her and her car on fire and left her to die the night of Dec. 6, 2014, in Courtland in Panola County. She died at a hospital in Memphis.

Prosecutors said Monday that a witness has been found who allegedly gave Tellis a ride from an area close to where Chambers' car keys were found to Tellis' sister's home. Three additional witnesses connected to that information will also be introduced in the Tellis' retrial, officials said. The first trial ended in a mistrial after the jury deadlocked on a verdict.

That information could be key in filling in a blank regarding Tellis' whereabouts throughout the night Chambers died.

Assistant District Attorney Jay Hale argued at a hearing in the case Monday was that the prosecution had just turned over discovery on that information to the defense on June 28. On July 2, four days later, the defense filed motions to sanction District Attorney John Champion for prosecutorial misconduct, to have him and his team removed from the case, and to delay the trial from its scheduled date of Sept. 24.

Champion had spoken to Jalen Caudle, a possible witness who alleged he had information from Tellis. Caudle is also another client of Tellis defense attorney Dana Palmer, and Palmer said Champion should not have talked to Caudle without her present. Champion argued he was seeing Caudle as a witness in the Tellis case and had advised him they would not talk about his capital murder case.

Judge Gerald Chatham threw out the defense motions to continue the trial and remove the prosecution team, and said it was up to the Mississippi Bar rather than him to sanction a district attorney.

During Tellis' first trial, federal intelligence analyst Paul Rowlett detailed the movements of Tellis and Chambers through phone records and security video. The two had been parked in a driveway next to Tellis' home, and their phones were both inactive between 6:49 and 7:26. Within four minutes, Chambers' phone signal then shows up on Herron Road, where she was later burned alive.

At 7:42 p.m., Tellis' phone "woke up," and he used it to call Chambers and tell her he had a girlfriend coming over and he couldn't see her that night.

After that, Tellis called an out-of-state girlfriend to tell her he was walking to his sister's house to borrow her Tahoe. Investigators pointed out a cut-through trail from where Chambers was found on Herron Road to the subdivision in which Tellis' sister lives. Chambers' keys would later be found in a yard along that route.

That is where the witness is said to have picked Tellis up and taken him to his sister's house to borrow her car.

Tellis' cell data showed no activity again until 8 p.m., according to the prosecution. During that time, a vehicle could be seen on gas station video pulling into a storage shed where gasoline was stored, but the image of the vehicle was dark.

At 8 p.m., a vehicle matching the description of Tellis' sister's SUV could be seen on gas station video speeding toward Batesville. Tellis told investigators it "could be" him.

At 8:04 p.m., Chambers' phone made its last communications with a cell tower. Investigators say it shut off when it got too hot.

SARDIS, Miss. (localmemphis.com) - A Panola County, Mississippi judge ruled Monday District Attorney John Champion will remain on the Jessica Chambers murder retrial set for September.

The defense claimed Champion committed prosecutorial misconduct and ethical violations when he met with one of the defense' clients.

John Champion took the stand to defend himself against those allegations.

Darla Palmer, the attorney for Quinton Tellis, wanted Champion thrown off the case.  The defense claimed that Champion pressured potential witness Jalen Caudle back in April. Caudle is accused of capital murder in an unrelated case, but he and Tellis met while in the DeSoto County Jail. Palmer is Caudle's attorney.

The affidavit accuses Champion of "guiding" Caudle to say that Tellis went by the nickname Eric, which was a key part of the first murder trial that ended in a mistrial.

JACKSON, Miss. — A man accused of killing a Mississippi woman by setting her on fire is appealing a judge’s ruling clearing a prosecutor of misconduct, saying the judge used the wrong legal standard.

Lawyers for Quinton Tellis on Thursday filed an appeal with the Mississippi Supreme Court asking justices to overrule a finding that Panola County District Attorney John Champion’s actions didn’t hurt Tellis’ case. Lawyer Darla Palmer argues in the filing that Circuit Judge Gerald Chatham asked the wrong question, and should have analyzed whether Champion broke rules against prosecutorial misconduct instead of declaring that the case could go forward because Tellis had suffered no harm.

“Defendant Tellis contends that he should not have been required by the court to show prejudice to him, individually, at this stage of trial,” Palmer wrote . “The court should have been weighing whether prosecutorial misconduct on the part of District Attorney Champion had somehow infringed on the standard of ensuring a fair and impartial trial for defendant Tellis and the administration of justice.”

Tellis is scheduled to be retried Sept. 24, but the trial could be delayed if the Supreme Court takes up the appeal.

The retrial of Quinton Tellis for the 2014 burning death of Jessica Chambers will be in Batesville — the same location as the first trial — with a jury selected in Oktibbeha County, District Attorney John Champion confirmed Tuesday.

The Dispatch newspaper of Columbus and Starkville first reported Friday that an order entered in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court last week indicated the jury would come from there. The order calls for a jury pool of at least 300 to be drawn Sept. 24, the day the retrial is scheduled to begin.

The Batesville venue will remain the same, Champion said.

"None of that has changed," Champion said. "As far as I know, the jury will be selected there (Oktibbeha County), brought to Batesville and sequestered."

The jury panel will be drawn from Oktibbeha County, some 120 miles southeast of Batesville. Batesville is about 60 miles south of Memphis.

Selection begins Monday morning in the Oktibbeha county seat of Starkville, where a pool of at least 300 potential jurors was called.

Attorneys on both sides hope a jury and alternates will be seated in a single day and transported Monday night to Batesville, where they will be sequestered for the duration of the trial. If that timeline holds, testimony will begin Tuesday.

The scenario is reminiscent of the first trial, when jurors were selected in South Mississippi's Pike County in one day then driven to Batesville for the trial.

Testimony is expected to focus largely on the same points as the first trial. Prosecutors are expected, however, to introduce at least one new witness who they believe will bolster their case. 

Alton Peterson of Jackson, who represents Tellis along with Darla Palmer of Jackson, said the defense case will continue to focus on the belief that someone named "Eric" committed the crime and not Tellis.

He said no new witnesses are expected for the defense, though that could change in the days before testimony begins.

First responders painted a much more detailed picture of the scene than they did in the first trial, which ended with a hung jury, going more in depth about what they actually heard firsthand. While two held out that they had helped Chambers and heard her clearly, several others testified they did not hear her or said she was so hard to hear that they had to get on the ground "in her face" to hear the sounds she was making.

Prosecutors and the defense team set the tone with opening statements, in which Assistant District Attorney Jay Hale warned jurors they would hear the name "Eric" early from witnesses, but that investigators had exhausted every lead related to anyone by that name or something similar.

Dr. Kathyrn Rogers from Brandon testified that one test included Tellis as a possible donor but a second more specific analysis said the DNA on the keys did not come from Tellis,  The broader Y chromosome test indicated that Tellis could be not  excluded from the donor list but that any family member on his father’s side could not be excluded either.    The DNA test that focused on X and Y chromosomes came back negative for Tellis DNA.

BATESVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Prosecutors on Friday played hours of interrogation videos in the trial of a man charged with burning a Mississippi woman to death, trying to show jurors how he repeatedly changed his story as he was confronted with contradictory evidence.

Quinton Tellis is being retried on capital murder charges in the 2014 death of Jessica Chambers after a jury couldn't reach a verdict in Tellis' first trial last year.

Prosecutors showed videos from at least three different questionings of Tellis in 2015 and 2016, local news outlets report. He was jailed during that time in Monroe, Louisiana, in relation to the stabbing death of Meing-Chen Hsiao, an international student from Taiwan. Tellis is also indicted for murder in her death and has already pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of her debit card.

Agent Scott Meadows of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, testified that Tellis emerged as a serious suspect after cellphone records began connecting his and Chambers' locations on the evening she died.

Tellis at first denied being with Chambers at any point during the evening.

"He swore on his momma he wasn't with Jessica," Meadows testified.

After investigators told him that his and Chambers' cellphones both traveled 5 miles (8 kilometers) from their hometown of Courtland to Batesville, he said he had met Chambers at a Taco Bell in Batesville.

But Tellis then told them he had borrowed a truck belonging to his friend, Michael "Big Mike" Sanford. Finally, when investigators told Tellis they knew Sanford and his truck had been at a football game in Nashville, Tennessee, that night, he admitted he rode with Chambers.

That put Tellis with Chambers up until about 6:30 p.m. on the night of her death. Investigators say both their cell phones then went silent for an hour after returning to Courtland. Prosecutors believe Tellis and Chambers had sex in her car on a rural backroad, leaving her unconscious. They contend Tellis then went and retrieved a gasoline can, lighting Chambers and her car on fire. She was found burned alive, staggering away from the burning car just after 8 p.m.

Throughout the retrial of Quinton Tellis, Department of Justice Analyst Paul Rowlett's name has come up dozens of times as the prosecution laid out the elements of their case.

Rowlett was the one the agents, officers, and deputies of dozens of agencies gave their information to as they did interviews, gathered information and extracted data.

On Saturday, Rowlett, entered as an expert witness in the field of intelligence analysis, took the stand and began to outline for the jury how his process is similar to taking 50 1,000-piece puzzles and dumping them all on the ground, eliminating some pieces, and then putting one puzzle together from all those mixed pieces.

You don't throw any pieces away, he said, but if they don't fit, you move them to the edge of the table. As the picture starts to clarify, then you may have to go back to the pieces you put aside earlier.

That, Rowlett said, is how Tellis' name came back up after he was put aside earlier in the case.

Rowlett said he received location data from several cellphones, including Tellis' and something major jumped out at him: Where Tellis said he was on the day of Jessica Chambers' death is not where his cellphone data says he was.

As a matter of fact, it showed he was with Chambers that evening. Shortly following that realization — what investigators have called the "ah-ha moment" — Rowlett called Special Agent Scott Meadows of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Agent Tim Douglas of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, District Attorney John Champion, and ADA Jay Hale.

BATESVILLE, Miss. – Jurors in Quinton Tellis' capital murder decided to resume deliberations Monday after 4½ hours spent Sunday behind closed doors weighing the evidence.

The jury from Oktibbeha County began deliberations at 2:35 p.m. Sunday following six days of testimony in a second trial nearly a year after the first that ended in a hung jury. Their work began following testimony in the morning from three defense witnesses, a prosecution rebuttal witness and roughly two hours of closing arguments from the two sides.

The judge called jurors into court for a progress report shortly before 7. The forewoman said they’re making progress but need ”a little more time.”

Dinner was ordered as jurors continued deliberations.

Deliberations continued until around 7:30 p.m. and are set to resume at 9 a.m. Monday.

BATESVILLE, Miss. — On Monday morning as jurors began a second day of deliberation in the Jessica Chambers murder trial,  Circuit Judge Gerald Chatham rebuked the courtroom sternly.

A spectator, he said, had smuggled a cellphone into the courtroom on Sunday and posted pictures of the jury on Facebook.

Batesville Police Chief James McCloud says the person cited by Circuit Judge Gerald Chatham for shooting a photo of jurors inside the courtroom has been cleared after seeing the photo.

McCloud said the woman in question came in and showed him what she had, and it was nothing improper. Unless someone produces a photo supposedly posted earlier showing jurors, McCloud said no action will be taken.

As jury deliberations continued Monday, the jurors sent a note to the court that said they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.

Chatham gave them an addition instruction.

"The court originally told you to consider each juror, but you are to consult with each other," he said.

Chatham advised them not to surrender their honest convictions, but to please consider and listen to their fellow jurors as well.

In 2017, the first trial of Quinton Tellis resulted in a mistrial. The first time the jury told the court they couldn't reach a verdict, the count was 7-5 in favor of the prosecution. When court was adjourned, the jury was 9-3 in favor of the prosecution.

For the second time, a jury of his peers could not decide collectively whether Quinton Tellis was the one who set 19-year-old Jessica Chambers on fire in a cove on a dark, lonely embankment in December 2014.

Neither side asked the judge to poll the jury to see who voted guilty and who voted not guilty, so it's unclear what the count was.

The lack of a verdict comes after a trial that has played out to be a serious courtroom drama.

"We've talked about for the last year, how do we make ourselves better?" said Champion. "We felt like bringing the speech pathologist in, we found Ms. (Sherry) Flowers, we thought that made us better. We had 12 wonderful jurors who did their job, and they just couldn't agree."

“We’re disappointed the jury didn’t find him not guilty. The ball is now in the court of the district attorney,” said defense attorney Alton Peterson.

Peterson said he believes Champion’s office has indicated it will retry, but Champion said he wasn’t commenting.

Champion said the jury in this case is one of the most attentive, hardworking juries he's ever worked with.

Chambers' family was not on site when the mistrial was declared, though Champion said he had spoken to them.

Now Tellis returns to Louisiana, where he is currently serving a 10-year sentence in Louisiana on charges of illegally using a credit card belonging to a woman who was found tortured to death.

"Obviously he's got to go back to Louisiana soon because they've got some deadlines approaching on a drug case they have down there on him, so we're going to have to get him down there as soon as we can," Champion said.

A man accused of two murders, one in Monroe and one in Mississippi, will return to Ouachita Parish when his current sentence at Louisiana State Penitentiary concludes, according to District Attorney Steve Tew.

Quinton V. Tellis, 30, is accused of the first-degree murder of Ming-Chen Hsiao in July 2015. Hsiao was a recent graduate of the University of Louisiana Monroe at the time of her death. She was killed in a small apartment near the campus.

In May 2016, Tellis entered a guilty plea to one count of unauthorized use of an access card in 4th Judicial District Court for using Hsiao's debit card after her death. He received a 10-year sentence as a habitual offender.

Tellis has been housed at Angola since Oct. 5 following an Oct. 1 mistrial on capital murder charges connected to the burning death of Jessica Chambers, age 19, in Panola County, Mississippi, in 2014.

According to Department of Corrections records, if Tellis served his full sentence, he would be released on Aug.19, 2025, but he is eligible for early release with the accrual of good time — sentence credits that allow inmates to earn time off their prison term.

Tellis only needs to serve 35 percent of his sentence and has an early release date, per the Department of Corrections, of Feb. 18.

In a Friday interview, Tew said the district attorney's office will use a detainer held by Ouachita Parish to keep Tellis in custody and bring him back to Ouachita Correctional Center. Authorities in Panola County also have a detainer on Tellis.

Tew said a warrant is on file for Tellis on charges of first-degree murder, and the DA's office is reviewing the case. He also indicated he believes his office will go forward with a murder case.

Quinton Tellis returns to court on Aug. 14 for a status hearing.

He was indicted on May 17 on one count of second-degree murder in connection with the 2015 death of Ming-Chen Hsiao, a recent University of Louisiana Monroe graduate.

The hearing follows a June 18 not guilty plea entered in 4th Judicial District Court

Randall Donald was assigned by the court to serve as Tellis' attorney on May 13, and Donielle Staten enrolled as co-counsel in June.

Assistant District Attorney Geary Aycock is serving as lead prosecutor for the case.

On July 2, the prosecution filed a discovery motion to inspect evidence the defense plans to use at trial. The state also filled the defense's motion for discovery on the same day.

Tellis returned to Ouachita Parish in February after completing a sentence for one count of unauthorized use of a debit card belonging to Hsiao after her death.

The man accused in the burning death of Mississippi teenager Jessica Chambers may soon be out on bond for a second murder charge in Louisiana.

Bond for Quinton Tellis, 31, was set at his most recent hearing in 4th Judicial District Court in Louisiana. Tellis is in custody in Louisiana after two trials in Mississippi ended in a mistrial. Tellis was charged with capital murder in the Dec. 2014 burning death of Chambers, 19, of Panola County.

According to minute filings for the Oct. 23 hearing, Judge Larry Jefferson reduced bond for Tellis to $300,000 on a second-degree murder charge and reserved the right to adjust bond again at any time in the future.

Tellis returned to Ouachita Parish in February after completing a sentence for one count of unauthorized use of a debit card belonging to Ming-Chen Hsiao, a Monroe, Louisiana, woman stabbed to death in August 2015.

Hsiao was a recent graduate of the University of Louisiana Monroe at the time of her death and was killed in a small apartment near the campus.

PANOLA Co. - Two trials later and there is still no justice for the family of a North Mississippi teenager.

Jessica Chambers was killed nearly four years ago when she was burned alive and left for dead.

Lisa Chambers, Jessica's mother said that she would like to see a third trial, but she isn't sure that it would turn out any different from the first two.

District Attorney John Champion told FOX13 there is talk of trying Jessica's case a third time, but her accused killer Quinton Tellis is awaiting a completely different murder trial out of Louisiana where he allegedly tortured and cut up another woman.

"Just a lot of things when you get to this stage of a case can you realistically believe that you can prove your case beyond a reasonable doubt. The third time and it's just something we have got to look at," said Champion.

An affidavit recanting testimony from a witness in a pre-trial hearing connected to a Monroe murder case was written, in part, by the murder suspect according to a handwriting analysis requested by the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Quinton Tellis is accused of the 2015 stabbing death of Meing-Chen Hsiao, a recent graduate of ULM who lived in an apartment adjacent to campus.

Eric Hill was a witness in a 2016 case where Tellis ultimately pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized use of an access (debit) card belonging to Hsiao immediately before a jury trial was scheduled to begin.

Tellis received a 10-year sentence as a habitual offender and was transported to Mississippi to face one pending count of capital murder connected to the December 2014 burning death of Jessica Chambers, 19, in Panola County, Mississippi.

After the second mistrial in the Chambers case, Tellis returned to Louisiana. He remains in custody at Ouachita Correctional Center.

A pre-trial hearing for Tellis was moved to Dec. 17th at his most recent court date.
