Police searching for missing Pulaski County boy

Posted: Sunday, March 22, 2015 5:04 pm

Police and rescue crews searched Sunday night for a Pulaski County boy who went missing from his home.

Noah Terry Thomas, 5, of Dublin disappeared about 9 a.m. Sunday from his home in the 5400 block of Highland Road, said Anthony Akers, assistant Pulaski County administrator.

“He was in his home watching cartoons,” Akers said. But when Noah’s mother got up, he was missing. The boy is thought to have left on foot."

The family home is located between the New River Valley Airport and Cloyd’s Mountain.

Noah is described as 3 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 60 pounds and has red hair and brown eyes. He is thought to have been wearing a camouflage jacket, black and yellow pants, and Spider-Man rain boots.

Multiple agencies join the search for missing Pulaski County 5-year-old boy

By WSLS 10 Staff

PULASKI COUNTY (WSLS 10) - More than 100 members from local, regional and state agencies are continuing to search for missing 5-year-old Noah Terry Thomas.

The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office said Monday there are no solid leads in this case. However, they say they are continuing to search by foot, air and utilizing blood hounds to find the missing boy.

According to Assistant County Administrator Anthony Akers, a few miles around the boy's home were searched by foot on Sunday, March 22. Crews have also been using helicopters in the search. After flooding the area with manpower, authorities say there were no key findings overnight.

Police plan to go over the same areas they searched Sunday night, while the rest of the search crews are going to be expanding beyond that. Investigators say they're going to follow up on any leads of substance that come in. Crews plan to conduct an in-depth neighborhood search Monday.

Sheriff Davis says they are still treating this case as a missing child, who left on foot, who is believed to be in danger. The boy was last seen at 5461 Highland Road in Dublin, Virginia.

Davis says the boy's parents have been cooperating and were with investigators throughout the night.

Search continues for missing 5-year-old Pulaski County boy
Noah Thomas has not been seen since Sunday morning

Posted March 22, 2015, Updated March 23, 2015

UPDATE 11:20 a.m.  Monday

State police, FBI and Pulaski County deputies are widening a search for a missing 5-year-old Pulaski County boy.

Police say when Noah Thomas's mother woke up at 9 a.m. Sunday morning, Noah was in the living room watching cartoons.

She told police she went back to sleep and when she woke up around 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m., he was gone. She searched for Noah herself and called the police around 11 a.m.

The ground search never ended overnight. New search teams are coming in to look within a one-mile radius of where he was last seen.

Monday's search is more aggressive and detailed than Sunday's. Sunday's search was "fast" and unsuccessful, even though crews "flooded the area with manpower," according to Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis.

At least 150 law enforcement and emergency crew members are searching. State police from Fairfax to Virginia Beach area are helping.

Crews are also using dogs to search near the home. The dogs stopped near the road, which is "never typical," according to Davis.

Search teams aren't ruling out anything as far as what may have happened to the boy, according to Anthony Akers, assistant county administrator, but there is nothing at this time indicating that this is a suspicious case.

"We have no evidence that has come forward as to any foul play or any vehicle seen in the area," Davis said. "And if you’ll think this is a Sunday morning, a lot of people are moving around. While it’s on a rural route, it’s a tight residential community?."

No neighbors have reported seeing anything unusual, or seeing the boy. The living room door was ajar, according to Davis.
 ::snipping3::

An Amber Alert was not issued because there is no vehicle or stranger description to give.

Investigators are interviewing people who know the child well. They are also looking into the sex offender registry.

Akers says crews are optimistic they will find Noah alive.

Noah has no unusual medical history or needs. Family members say he is a happy child, and very cautious. There are no red flags, according to Davis.

Search crews have drained one pond, and have ruled that out as a possibility.

PRESS CONFERENCE

Noah Thomas case: Lack of progress 'extremely frustrating
Posted: Wednesday, March 25, 2015 10:27 am

DUBLIN – As the search for five-year-old Noah Thomas closed on day four, investigators say progress has been “extremely frustrating” with very few leads that point to what could have happened to him.

It was initially reported that Noah was last seen between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. However, at a news conference on Wednesday, Assistant Pulaski County Administrator Anthony Akers clarified that Noah was actually last seen by his mother at 7 a.m. watching cartoons. His mother then went and took a nap, and woke up around 10:35 a.m. and noticed Noah was missing.

Akers said his mother did a search of the residence then immediately called 911, and the search began shortly after 11 a.m. That 911 call is not being released at this time since it is still a part of the investigation.

According to Akers, the parents, Paul Raymond Thomas, 32, and Ashley Jennifer White, 31, have been “extremely cooperative and very distraught” and are not ready to speak with the media yet.

While the parent’s movements are not being restricted, they are being monitored, Akers said. It is unclear at this time whether the family has hired a lawyer, but Akers speculated that they had been read their Miranda rights as part of the questioning process.

Later Wednesday Akers clarified some comments he made during the news conference: The parents are "in no way being considered suspects," he said; and  Akers also said that the parents are being assisted and helped in any way they need during this tough time. Additionally, investigators and crews are not able to speculate on Noah's current condition but continue to do everything in their power to find him and bring him home safely.

While the search continues, the idea that Noah could have been abducted continues to be on the forefront of many people’s minds. However as of Wednesday evening, there is still no substantial information to confirm that.

Janet, IMO, it could be for any number of reasons.

His eye color also "changed." It was first reported as green, then later reported as brown.

Why do you ask?

When it is considered that Noah went missing on March 22nd ... why was there no clarification until March 24nd regarding the two hour discrepancy in the timeline ... the two hour discrepancy regarding the last time Noah was seen by his mother?  Is there a reasonable explanation or ... could it be a red flag?

Time between Noah Thomas' last sighting and start of search critical
Mar 25, 2014

The reporting of the timeline surrounding Noah Thomas' disappearance has changed since Sunday morning. Anthony Akers with Pulaski County confirmed Tuesday night that Noah was last seen Sunday morning in the seven o'clock hour. Noah's mother noticed he was missing around 10:30 a.m., and crews began the search at 11 a.m.

Burke said the amount of time that passes between when a person is last seen and when the person is reported missing is critical. In the case of a child, the distance covered in one amount of time could be a lot different than the distance covered in different amount of time.

In Thomas's case, the amount of time between when he was last seen and when he was reported missing is about three hours.

Could it be that the septic tank was uncovered and Noah fell in when he left that house on Sunday morning while his mother slept?  I could be wrong but ... I cannot comprehend a child's body being disposed of in such revolting manner.  The implication would be that the person was void of a conscience.

I also am past NG unless she is interviewing LE or immediate family of the victims.  However ... when flipping the channels this evening I caught the drift of the discussion.  Ten minutes into the show ... the topic changed.  I may read the transcript later.

Has Noah's parents been interviewed by media since his disappearance?

Officials said the 5-year-old was discovered in a septic tank during a detailed search.

Noah's parents were not at the news conference, however, other family members attended. They broke into tears upon hearing news of Noah's death.

"I know he is up there {in heaven} looking down. I want to thank everyone that helped look for him" Jason Thomas, Noah's uncle.

Police said the parents continue to cooperate with authorities during this tragic time.

"No one loved Noah more than Paul and Ashley and the are completely devastated" said Katherine Ide, Noah's aunt.

Noah Thomas' body found in septic tank on parents' property
March 26, 2015

<snipped>

While authorities had previously said the family’s house and the immediate surrounding area had been searched at least three times with nothing suspicious found, “a more detailed and aggressive search” was conducted and Noah’s body was discovered. It is unclear what led them to empty the septic tank.

Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis said that currently, no one is in custody. Noah’s body will be taken to the medical examiners’ office in Roanoke where an autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.

<snipped>

At the Thomases’ house, in the 5400 block of Highland Road, officials roped off the entire house as FBI agents and evidence recovery teams came and went on Thursday.

A neighbor who lives down the street from the Thomases said that he’s lived in the neighborhood 30 years and said that every house has a septic tank. Almost all of the septic tanks on the street are 4 to 5 feet underground.

Throughout the investigation, Noah’s parents Ashley Jennifer White, 31, and Paul Raymond Thomas, 32, have been under intense public scrutiny. As the fifth day of searching got underway, they had yet to make a statement, speak to media or designate a spokesperson.

<snipped>

“You don’t get into a septic tank by accident. Someone’s going to pay,” Jason Thomas, Noah’s uncle, said.

<snipped>

Sheriff Davis repeatedly said in the early morning press conference on Thursday that the parents were “extremely distraught” and had been “extremely cooperative.” Davis said that they had sought legal advice, but that a lawyer had not been with them during questioning.

According to previous statements, Noah’s mother last saw him on Sunday morning watching cartoons about 8 or 8:15 a.m.. She then went to take a nap with their infant child and awoke about 10:35 to find that Noah was missing.

<snipped>

Davis had previously said that Noah was in school on Friday, and video surveillance shows the family out in public on Saturday evening.

When asked if search warrants had been filed with regard to Noah’s disappearance, an assistant clerk at Pulaski County Circuit Court replied “everything in that case has been sealed.”

<snipped>

While it was initially believed that Noah may have wandered off, Davis and other authorities said they never ruled out the possibility that Noah had been abducted.

Now that Noah’s body has been found, it is unclear how the investigation will proceed.

Authorities: Noah Thomas case moving forward as a death investigation
Mar 27, 2015

After five days of searching for 5-year-old Noah Thomas, and the tragic discovery of his body Thursday afternoon, authorities announced Friday they're focusing their efforts now on a death investigation.

In a scheduled news conference at 10 a.m., Anthony Akers, Assistant County Administrator, said on behalf of the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department, they would like to thank the dozens of agencies who helped in the search for Noah, including the FBI Violent Crimes Against Children division, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and the Virginia State Police.

In moving forward with the investigation, authorities say the focus will be on facts and physical evidence, and will not be driven by speculation or rumors. Official comments on the investigation will be solely released by the Sheriff's Office, at such a time when a significant development occurs.

Akers says he wants the public to remain cautious with rumors and speculation on Noah's death.

WSLS 10 asked if there was any evidence to confirm if the family was in fact home with Noah Sunday morning, March 22.

Sheriff Davis said they were going by family statements and Sheriff Davis said he had spent many hours with Noah's parents and asked the public to not judge them, stating, "They're living in a nightmare," and "their grief is obvious."

PULASKI CO. (WSLS 10) - On Friday further information was released on the septic tank 5-year-old Noah Thomas' body was discovered in.

Sources say the septic tank is considered a "high rise" even though it's ground level. This type of tank has a plastic lid that goes over the top. Authorities have not said if the top was on or off when they found Noah.

Sources say the tank is 4 by 8 feet and 5 and a half feet deep. The septic tank holds about 1,000 gallons.

I have considered that Noah could have fallen into an open septic tank when he left the home while his mother slept?  However ... Noah's uncle doesn't appear to believe that there was an accident.  Why?

The 5-year-old Pulaski County boy was found dead Thursday

PULASKI CO., Va. -

Questions surrounding the death of 5-year-old Noah Thomas continue.

After a search that began Sunday morning, the boy was found Thursday afternoon in a septic tank behind the family home on Highland Road in Dublin. Noah's autopsy is complete. But the medical examiner is not releasing results at this time.

Police say they got a hard and credible tip that they needed to look inside the 1,000-gallon septic tank behind the family home.

Montgomery Sanitation Services out of Christiansburg was called to drain the septic tank. We tracked down the technician, who said he was in Giles County when he got the call.

Sheriff Jim Davis, through the Pulaski County public information officer, said that FBI agents and Pulaski County investigators had already removed the two-pound plastic lid. They saw sludge, put the lid back on, and called the company to come drain the tank. We asked the technician what he did when he got to the home.

"Went down to the property, seen two police officers there. And they showed us where the tank was,” Montgomery Sanitation technician Jonathan Abate said. “And we started pulling our hoses off just like we would a normal job. And we pulled the lid off the tank and start pumping. And that's when I seen the little boy down there."

We have reached out to the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office through the public information officer to ask if anyone checked the septic tank before Thursday.

We also reached out to three local septic tank maintenance businesses to find out how accessible the lids are to the general public.

Tidy Services in Salem has been in business for more than 30 years.

Owner Alex Phillips says there are two kinds of septic tank lids used these days. Most are made of cement and can weigh anywhere from 50 to 100 pounds.

He says newer tanks and lids are made of plastic, like the one investigators found Thomas' body in.

Phillips says regardless of the size and weight of the lid most are buried, so you have to use a shovel to get to them and some type of tool to remove them from the tank.

"The covers vary according to who makes them but all the ones we use are plastic. The same size of a manhole, a circular lid. And they are all bolted down to the pipe that brings it to the surface with 6-10 bolts,” Phillips said.

Phillips says the size of a septic tank is based on the number of restrooms in a home.

He says while it's not impossible, it is highly unlikely a child would be able to remove a lid -- whether it is cement or plastic.

The implication is that little Noah did not accidentally fall into a septic tank that was not covered.  I cannot comprehend WHO would throw a little boy ... dead or alive ... in a septic take.  That person would be the definition of evil.

Autopsy completed, death investigation of Noah Thomas continues

DUBLIN – While the search for Noah Thomas has ended, the death investigation has begun, according to Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis.

Davis said in a written statement on Friday that moving forward, the investigation into five-year-old Noah’s death will be “focused on facts and physical evidence and it will not be driven by speculation nor rumors.”

The Medical Examiner’s office in Roanoke confirmed on Friday that they have completed Noah’s autopsy, but the cause and manner of death are pending. It was unclear Friday if that includes toxicology reports.

Tracie Cooper, business manager for the Medical Examiner’s office, said that all information on that case is being released by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, and that’s a normal procedure when the investigation is still open.

Noah was found dead Thursday in a septic tank near the mobile home where he lived with his parents on Highland Road — just hours after the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office announced a reward for information that could lead to finding Noah. The mobile is behind a single family residence. The discovery ended a five- day search for the boy who seemingly vanished from his living room while watching cartoons.

Anthony Akers, assistant county administrator for Pulaski County, said that Sheriff Davis and the FBI removed the ground-level lid to the septic tank during the search and later called in crews to pump contents of the tank out. Once pumping began, crews found Noah’s body.

The septic tank is located between the mobile home and the house.

According to documents provided by the Virginia Department of Health, the septic tank that Noah was found in was constructed in March 2002. Documentation indicates that it was not inspected after that. The tank is 1,000 gallons with an “access manway,” according to the documents. It is unclear if that could be accessed at ground level or if it was under ground.

Around the time the septic tank was installed on the property, a new Virginia code was put in place to require septic tanks to either have a three inch or larger inspection pipe, or have a tamper proof, child-resistant access port. Based on the documents provided, it is unknown which stipulation this particular septic tank met.

The property had been searched several times, according to authorities, but it wasn’t until the tank was emptied during a more “detailed and aggressive search” that his body was found.

I'm not so sure, myself.

I just don't have enough information from LE to come to that conclusion.

I am trying to stay on top of things so I can try to understand what happened.

It's so tragically sad.

Autopsy completed, death investigation of Noah Thomas continues
Friday, March 27, 2015

The Medical Examiner’s office in Roanoke confirmed on Friday that they have completed Noah’s autopsy, but the cause and manner of death are pending. It was unclear Friday if that includes toxicology reports.

Tracie Cooper, business manager for the Medical Examiner’s office, said that all information on that case is being released by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, and that’s a normal procedure when the investigation is still open.

Noah was found dead Thursday in a septic tank near the mobile home where he lived with his parents on Highland Road.  The mobile is behind a single family residence.

My emotions are mixed.  They range from sad to outright anger.

I was on the fence straddling between two scenarios.  1.  Noah accidentally fell into an open septic tank.  2.  Noah was thrown into the septic tank to cover a crime against him.  However ... the following words of Anthony Akers are what cause me to take a position.

Anthony Akers, assistant county administrator for Pulaski County, said that Sheriff Davis and the FBI removed the ground-level lid to the septic tank during the search and later called in crews to pump contents of the tank out. Once pumping began, crews found Noah’s body.

Noah Thomas case: Lack of progress 'extremely frustrating

Later Wednesday Akers clarified some comments he made during the news conference: The parents are "in no way being considered suspects," he said

Could it be that an attorney has instructed Noah's parents to personally keep a low profile regarding the happenings encompassing their son's disappearance?  In other words ... no media statements ... not media interviews.

Throughout the investigation, Noah’s parents Ashley Jennifer White, 31, and Paul Raymond Thomas, 32, have been under intense public scrutiny. As the fifth day of searching got underway, they had yet to make a statement, speak to media or designate a spokesperson.

Sheriff Davis repeatedly said in the early morning press conference on Thursday that the parents were “extremely distraught” and had been “extremely cooperative.” Davis said that they had sought legal advice, but that a lawyer had not been with them during questioning.

Now that Noah’s body has been found, it is unclear how the investigation will proceed.

Community Releases Balloons to Remember Noah Thomas
Posted: Mar 28, 2015 5:33 PM EDT
http://www.wset.com/story/28639698/community-releases-balloons-to-remember-noah-thomas

Dublin, VA - A ceremony was held Saturday in Dublin to remember the life of 5-year old Noah Thomas.  Noah's body was found Thursday after a 5-day-long search.

Dozens of Pulaski County residents came out to release balloons at Randolph Park this afternoon.  Many said they never knew Noah but wanted to come together to support his family and each other.

"God had other plans.  He did bring him home safely, however it just was not to his earthly home," said organizer Tonya White.  "I just felt like this community needed healing because this was devastating to the entire community."

Noah went missing Sunday afternoon, beginning a five-day-long search.  Thursday, Noah's body was found at his home in an underground septic tank.

White says she wanted to release balloons as a symbol.

"Once that helium balloon is released, it is free to go wherever it wants to.  Much like Noah in that well when God called him home," said White.

"It hits home when you have children of your own," said attendee Robin Lawrence.  Although she never knew Noah, she is praying for his family and holding her own children much closer.

"I'm scared for the children.  It's horrifying," said Lawrence.

White hopes this will be the first step in bringing peace to the community.

Noah Terry Thomas

Noah Terry Thomas, 5, of Dublin, Va., was found Thursday, March 26, 2015.

Born June 26, 2009, in Christiansburg, Va., he was the son of Paul Thomas and Ashley White. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Terry White, and paternal grandmother and grandfather, Ellen Fostek and Paul Thomas Jr.

He was a kindergarten student at Riverlawn Elementary School in Fairlawn, Va. Noah was in many ways your typical 5-year-old boy. He liked to ride his bike, play with Nerf guns and pretend he was Spider Man. He loved playing basketball, and was especially excited when his team got to play against his cousin’s team.

Noah was very adamant when he found out that his sibling was going to be a sister, that, in fact, he was having a brother. It didn’t take long for him to fall in love with her and cherished his role as her big brother. What made him so special was his infectious smile and laugh. Noah’s smile was the type that could melt your heart and make you smile in return. He was carefree, happy and loving. He usually would not leave you without a big kiss and a hug.

The family of Noah appreciates all the love and support this community and beyond has shown. Your thoughts, prayers and well wishes could not have been expressed on a better person than Noah. All who knew him would agree he was an angel on earth, and now his smiling face will forever be watching over us.

Noah is survived by his parents, Paul Thomas and Ashley White of Dublin; little sister Abigail Thomas of Dublin; maternal grandmother Sharon White of Fairlawn; maternal great-aunt Denise Cales of Fairlawn; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, teachers and special friends.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Dublin United Methodist Church, 424 E. Main St., Dublin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Noah Thomas Memorial Fund at National Bank of Blacksburg, 900 Memorial Drive, Pulaski, Va. 24301 or any branch of National Bank.

Bower Funeral Home, Pulaski, is handling the arrangements for the family.

Hi Brandi

With or without autopsy results ... there is a major unknown "fact" that would indicate for certain whether little Noah death was accidental or the result of foul play.

It would be interesting to know through a statement from an official investigation spokesperson if the lid was on or off the septic tank at the time time of the "hard and credible tip" that lead to “a more detailed and aggressive search".

I could be wrong but ... in my opinion ... it makes sense that an uncover tank would have been discovered during previous searches and immediately investigated ... an uncovered tank Noah may have accidentally fallen into while his mother slept.

First responders such as Pulaski County sheriff’s deputies and members of the Virginia State Police were present at the funeral and burial. Upon entering the church, law enforcement officers walked up to Noah's casket and placed patches representing their division on the top.

Anthony Akers, assistant Pulaski County administrator, has served as the public information officer since the search began, and in the days after. Akers spoke to the community's resilience and grit during the search for Noah and in the days after during Wednesday's service.

“One thing is for sure, nobody quit on Noah. That’s why I will proudly stand in front of a camera and say that we live in the greatest community in America," Akers said. "Not one of us knew 10 days ago that we'd be in this place today. Life can turn on a dime."

Noah's small blue casket sat at the front of the church with Spider-Man kites and balloons surrounding it. Blue was Noah’s favorite color, and many attending the service opted to wear blue clothing.

"If anyone has any question today as to where Noah is, just look up at the sky," Akers said.

Noah Thomas: Outgoing boy with innocent smile remembered during service
April 1, 2015

On Wednesday, over 200 friends, family and community members filled the seats of Dublin United Methodist Church to remember and cherish the life of the five-year-old boy who was tragically found dead last week. Following the service, Noah was buried at Highland Memorial Gardens.

The service featured several reverend’s words and prayers from across the community. Musical pieces included "Jesus Loves Me" and "Amazing Grace" among others.

Noah is survived by his parents, Paul Raymond Thomas and Ashley Jennifer White and his infant sister, Abigail Thomas.

“He loved to hold her, make her laugh and any time he came in the room his eyes would light up,” Worley said about Noah and his sister.

His parents, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins and family members were present at the service.

Thanks Brandi.  I don't Tweet or do Facebook.  I only read if links are provided.

IF the septic tank was covered ... it would not take an autopsy to determine that foul play was involved.  On the other hand ... if three official searches of the property missed an uncovered septic tank ... there is the possibility that a tragic accident involving Noah occurred.  I hope ... at the very least ... this afternoon's press conference will provide some insight regarding the issue of the lid.

Apr 02, 2015

PULASKI CO. (WSLS 10) - Sheriff Davis with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office will give an update to the public Thursday at 4 p.m. in regards to the ongoing Noah Thomas death investigation.

Just days ago on March 30, Sheriff Davis said the autopsy of Noah Thomas was conducted, but test results will take longer to process. PULASKI, VA (WWBT) -

The parents of a 5-year-old boy found dead in a septic tank in Pulaski County are under arrest on charges of abuse and neglect.

Ashley White and Paul Thomas are being held without bond in the New River Valley Regional Jail.

Noah Thomas' body was found in a septic tank one week ago, after a frantic five-day search. He was laid to rest on Wednesday. Officers say the cause of death remains unclear and a full autopsy is not complete. The FBI is providing forensic support, assisting Pulaski authorities with the collection and analysis of evidence.

Police received more than 100 tips from around the country in the search for Noah. Some tipsters said they had seen the boys, while others reported suspicious vehicles in the child's neighborhood.

Parents of Noah Thomas arrested, charged with child abuse
Posted: Thursday, April 2, 2015 5:47 pm | Updated: 5:47 pm, Thu Apr 2, 2015.

PULASKI – A week after their five-year-old son was found dead, the parents of Noah Terry Thomas have been arrested and charged with felony child abuse and neglect.

Ashley Jennifer White and Paul Raymond Thomas are currently being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond.

In a press conference on Thursday, Pulaski County Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Fleenor said that the charges are in relation to both Noah, and his infant sister Abigail.

“Please rest assured that the sheriff’s office and the office of the commonwealth’s attorney have spent considerable time and effort on this case and we anticipate that our jobs are far from over,” Fleenor said.

County Sheriff Jim Davis confirmed that Abigail had been removed from the parent’s house the day after Noah’s disappearance by the sheriff’s office and Pulaski County Department of Social Services.

Paul Thomas was charged under a subsection of the law that relates to “reckless disregard for human life.” His charges are a class 6 felony and carry with them a minimum of a one year prison sentence and up to five years for each charge.

Ashley White was charged under two different subsections of the law. One charge, like Paul’s, relates to “reckless disregard for human life” and carries with it the same punishment. However, she is also being charged under a more serious subsection that is a class 4 felony which is punishable by no less than two years and no more than 10 years. That subsection involves “serious injuries” to a child that were received under an adult’s care. Those injuries, as defined by state code include: "disfigurement, a fracture, a severe burn or laceration, mutilation, maiming, forced ingestion of dangerous substances, or life threatening internal injuries."

Paul Thomas and Ashley White are the definition of evil on so many levels.  My heart break and my faith is tested when I consider what Noah and Abigail endured through the betrayal of those who where entrusted by God to both love and protect them.

“As time passed, it was our belief that Noah could not have survived being lost considering the physical terrain, large search area, and weather related elements,” Davis said. “That this point, in the search period, our search and rescue teams transitioned into a locate and recovery mode.”

Police say they got a credible tip to look into septic tank for Noah Thomas

After a search that began Sunday morning, the boy was found Thursday afternoon in a septic tank behind the family home on Highland Road in Dublin. Noah's autopsy is complete. But the medical examiner is not releasing results at this time.

Police say they got a hard and credible tip that they needed to look inside the 1000 gallon septic tank behind the family home.

Thinking about how it was stated on the day Noah's body was found:
"Meanwhile, investigators told WDBJ that a “hard, credible tip” caused them to look in the septic tank behind the family’s home." (http://wtvr.com/2015/03/30/noah-thomas-memorial/)

and today, where Pulaski County Sheriff Jim Davis stated:
"During the fifth day of this mission, Noah’s body was recovered in the septic system. No tips or calls led the law enforcement authorities or search and rescue teams to drain the septic system," (http://www.wdbj7.com/news/local/new-river-valley/pulaski-sheriff-to-hold-4-pm-news-conference-on-noah-thomas-case/32151786)

perhaps LE was trying to make the parents think that someone had seen them deposit Noah's body there and were hoping that would spur on a confession.

Just my thought on why we have heard 2 contradictory statements concerning this from LE.

You could be right Brandi.  However ... when did "the police" say a "hard and credible tip" caused them to investigate the septic tank.  I don't think Davis or Akers stated that in any of the press conferences.  I could be wrong.

Noah Thomas' parents arraignment scheduled at 1 p.m. via video conference

PULASKI COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Noah Thomas' parents have been arrested on charges of abuse and neglect of children, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office.

Ashley White and Paul Thomas were being held at the New River Valley Jail without bond. The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office and social services took six-month-old Abigail from the parents' home the day after Noah disappeared.

According to arrest warrants filed in Pulaski County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Ashley White showed "reckless disregard for human life," and "caused serious injuries." In the report it also said "Incident ultimately led to Noah's death," and "Cause or permanent injury to life or health of child by a willfull act, omission, or refusal to provide necessary care." Court records also indicate White worked at Patty's Kitchen.

Arrests warrants also stated Paul Thomas "showed reckless disregard for human life," and also said the "incident led to Noah's death." Court documents say Thomas worked at Phoenix Packaging.

White and Thomas currently face two counts each of abuse and neglect of Noah and Abigail.

According to the Commonwealth's Attorney Mike Fleenor, White and Thomas are scheduled to be arraigned by video Friday. Their cases were scheduled to be heard in the Pulaski County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. However, court officials said Friday their case was moved to Wythe County, Virginia due to no judges being available.

During their arraignment, the court will determine whether or not there is probable cause to certify felony warrants for the case to be tried in Pulaski County Circuit Court.

Ashley White and Paul Thomas were charged Thursday with two counts of felony abuse and neglect of children

WYTHE CO., Va. -

The parents of Noah Thomas were arraigned Friday afternoon through video conference.

Ashley White, 30, and Paul Thomas, 32, were charged Thursday with two felony counts of abuse and neglect of children.

One of White's charges is more serious. If convicted, White faces a maximum of 15 years in prison and Thomas faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Both are being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin without bond. Their next hearing is August 12 at 1:30 p.m. in Pulaski County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

At this time, neither White nor Thomas have retained an attorney. Their son, 5-year-old Noah Thomas, was found dead in a septic tank March 26 after a five-day search.

Friday’s hearing lasted about five minutes. A Juvenile and Domestic Relations judge in Wythe County presided over the hearing. White and Thomas appeared through video conference.

Media members were allowed to attend the hearing, but cameras were not allowed inside. White said she did not want media inside of the hearing because this is the worst thing that has ever happened to her and she doesn’t want her life to be the topic of everyone’s dinner conversation.

Noah Thomas case: Parents arraigned, and both comment on media presence
Posted: Friday, April 3, 2015 1:59 pm

WYTHEVILLE – A day after they were arrested for felony child abuse and neglect in Pulaski County, Noah Thomas’ parents, Paul Thomas and Ashley White, appeared via teleconference for their arraignment.

Appearing from the New River Valley Regional Jail, the couple listened as Judge Bradley Dalton of the Wytheville Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court read their charges. Pulaski County court was not in session on Friday, and Dalton said they have a policy to step in and help arraign people from surrounding areas.

Dalton alerted White and Thomas that several members of the media were present in the room for the hearing - and both objected.

“This is the saddest thing that’s ever happened to me in my life,” White  said. “I don’t feel people should be able to enjoy it over dinner.”

Said Thomas: “I don’t want my life to be their news story.”

Dalton overruled both objections, allowing the media to remain in the room. In Virginia, adult proceeding in juvenile and domestic relation courts are public.

When asked if the court needed to appoint an attorney, White replied that she was under the impression Jimmy Turk, a Radford-based lawyer, was “already helping” her.

“I’m not aware of that,” Dalton replied. He proceeded to give her a temporary waiver to contact legal guidance, with the possibility of having a court appointed attorney available at a later date for her. Messages left for Turk were not immediately returned on Friday.

Thomas told the judge that he had already hired an attorney. It was unclear Friday who that lawyer is.

Thomas also asked during the arraignment if he could receive bond. But Dalton replied that he “can’t get one today,” and that will have to be scheduled with Pulaski County.

I agree.

Paul and Ashley don't get it.  It isn't about them ... it's about a little boy named Noah who was allegedly neglected and abused.  It's about a little boy named Noah whose body was in all probability dumped into a septic tank.

Noah's parents were blessed with a treasure beyond measure and did not appreciate it worth.

And it is about Noah's 6 month-old sister, who the parents are charged with abusing and neglecting.

More TV Truth -

I have confirmed through three different sources that on the morning of March 22nd, the day that ‪#‎NoahThomas‬ was reported missing by his mother Ashley Jennifer White, at least two people entered the family's backyard and searched inside the septic tank.

In a face to face interview, I was told the time was around 11:20 AM when these two people arrived on Highland Road in Dublin. I'm told initially the concern was that possibly the Thomas' landlord had suffered a heart attack. The landlord I'm told, quickly conveyed that he was fine but that #NoahThomas was missing and could not be found.

I'm told that just after 11:20 AM, March 22nd after learning the search was on for a 5 year old little boy, these two people raced into the backyard. They told me they knew that every yard in that area of Highland Road had a septic tank and if left uncovered, a child could fall into it.

I'm told that police were already inside the Thomas' home and several things were taking place simultaneously; LEO's were trying to establish a timeline, they were creating search teams and interviewing Noah's parents, who I'm told appeared "distracted."

Other law enforcement sources, not involved directly with this specific stage of the investigation, tell me that this "moment in time" can be incredibly chaotic because officers are focused on finding the missing child and that effort is primordial.

While officers were inside the home, the two adults were outside, saw the septic tank and ran to it.

I asked "Was the lid on or off?"

"The lid was on, but it popped off like a Tupperware lid Orly. It popped right off."

I'm told the men looked inside the 1000 gallon tank and saw it was full. The stench was overpowering. They looked around and saw what appeared to be two metal poles nearby. They grabbed those poles and put them inside the eight- by four- by five and a half foot septic tank. They began probing vigorously yet tenderly, knowing a little boys body could be inside the dark water.

"Orly, we thought we felt something and we stopped. We pulled out the poles and ran and told police."

I'm told at least one LEO followed the adults to the septic tank. They told the LEO that their fingerprints were all over the metal pole and the septic tank lid "because we opened [the tank] and began looking for the boy."

The adults said they watched as a LEO took the metal pole and also probed gently inside the tank. After a while, I'm told the LEO pulled out the pole, placed the plastic lid back on the septic tank and the cursory search was over.

The following note is important: the sanitation technician who discovered Noah's body four days later inside the same tank, told me it appeared that there were as many three feet of thick sludge on the bottom of the tank. I'm told a septic tank accumulates about a foot of sludge every five years.

It's possible that the two adults may have felt some of that hardened sludge and thought it was Noah. It's also possible that when the LEO probed inside the tank, s/he didn't probe where the adults did, and therefore never felt the same object or hardness that the two neighborhood residents said they felt. Whatever it was the two adults felt inside the septic tank the same day Noah was reported missing, is certain to become part of the investigation.

This reporter conveyed all the information in this post to the PIO (Public Information Officer) for Pulaski County, who in turn relayed it to the Sheriff, the date- March 27th.

I asked the PIO to ask the Sheriff directly if the two pound septic tank lid was removed before the sanitation technician arrived that Thursday to drain the tank. The PIO, after conferring with the Sheriff, relayed that the tank had been removed shortly before the sanitation technician arrived. It was not made clear if the tank was removed by FBI agents or local law enforcement. Either way, the PIO conveyed the lid had been removed, LEO's had looked inside and the determination was made to not attempt to go any further until the tank was drained.

I asked the sanitation worker what he saw when he opened the tank. He said that first he removed the septic tank lid, placed the suction hose inside and began "skimming'' the top. He did this he said with FBI agents and other LEO's just feet away. He said that about 'halfway through, I saw what looked like a little butt and some pants and that jacket."

What happened next?

"I was told back away and go sit inside the truck."

This reporter reached out to the Richmond office of the FBI to ask about the progress of the investigation into the death of Noah Thomas. An FBI agent returned my call and all the information in this post was conveyed directly to the agent. This reporter asked if the FBI knew that two adults were saying that they had opened the septic tank lid within an hour of Noah being reported missing? Did the FBI know that local law enforcement, according to the adults, also probed inside the tank that same morning, but that part of the investigation never went any further?

The FBI was quick to point out that it was NOT part of the investigation. Why not I asked? I was told that Noah Thomas was not taken out of state, therefore the agency was not required to be involved from that investigative angle. It did however ''provide necessary resources'' to local law enforcement as requested.

Noah's parents, Ashley White and Paul Thomas have both been charged with felony child abuse and neglect and are being held without bond. No one has been charged in the death of Noah Thomas.

So, the whole above tweet is probably bogus.

Noah Thomas case: Children left at home on morning of March 22, prosecutor says
Posted: Wednesday, April 15, 2015 2:32 pm

Noah Thomas' parents were denied bond Wednesday during separate hearings that included new details about the child's death case.

It was previously reported by authorities that on the morning of March 22 – the day Noah was reported missing – Noah’s mother, Ashley Jennifer White, had said she drove Paul Raymond Thomas to work along with Noah and his infant sister.

During the parent’s bond hearings on Wednesday, Pulaski County Commonwealth's Attorney Mike Fleenor said that Ashley White and Paul Thomas had eventually admitted in interviews that they left the children at home that morning.

According to Fleenor, both were “interviewed on numerous occasions” and on March 23, admitted that they “left both children at home and Ms. White drove the co-defendant to work.” Fleenor said the couple shares a car.

The couple had also told investigators that they had taken a direct route to Paul's work that day at the Phoenix Packaging plant, but Fleenor said video surveillance shows them at a convenience store that morning where they stopped and bought some items.

Shortly after Noah Thomas went missing, Fleenor said the county Social Services Department was contacted to examine Thomas and White's 6-month-old daughter, Abigail Thomas. When medical personnel inspected her, they found that she had “fairly serious respiratory problems," Fleenor said Wednesday.

The infant was removed from her parents' home on March 23, and remains in the custody of social services, Fleenor said.

Also, when law enforcement officers searched the home, they found marijuana and other prescription drugs.

“When questioned, Mr. Thomas was asked if he used any drugs. He said that he had used marijuana weekly for 15 years,” Fleenor said.

While a cause of death is still unknown for Noah Thomas, Fleenor said that investigators continue to wait on toxicology reports, saying that they asked for the results to be sped up.

“We hope to know in the next few weeks,” Fleenor said.

Thomas shook for most of the 20-minute hearing, and during one point while Fleenor was talking about the pending autopsy report, began furiously whispering to his attorney.

However Karen Loftin, the substitute judge and attorney from Galax who presided over the hearings, ultimately decided to deny bond.

“Mr. Thomas has been deceptive,” Loftin said. “I cannot take his assertions at face value.”

White was represented by public defender, Kelsey Bulger, who argued that though her client may have given a misleading statement to authorities, she has been cooperative with police and is not a flight risk.

Ashley’s uncle, Dennis Cales, testified at the hearing that if granted bond, Ashley could stay with him and his 11-year-old daughter at their home in Giles County.

“While it is commendable that people are willing to house Ms. White, putting her in a house with a child is unthinkable at this point,” Loftin said, right before denying her bond.

Noah’s mother appeals bond denial
By MELINDA WILLIAMS
melinda@southwesttimes.com

The mother of a Dublin boy found dead in a septic tank in March has appealed her bond denial to a higher court.

Ashley Jennifer White will appear before a Pulaski County Circuit Court judge Monday morning to request a bond. White and her husband, Paul Raymond Thomas, have been held without bond since they were arrested April 2 on two counts each of child abuse and neglect.

The charges are related to the care of their 6-month-old daughter and 5-year-old son, Noah Thomas. White faces one count of abuse and neglect that is more serious than the other counts because it alleges her neglect led to Noah’s death.

Wednesday, a Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court judge refused to set a bond for White and Thomas.

Noah Thomas drowned; homicide charge dropped against mother

PULASKI — The mother of Noah Thomas is no longer facing a felony homicide charge in the 5-year-old’s death.
Ashley White, 31, and Noah’s father, Paul Thomas, 32, still face two class 6 felonies of child abuse and neglect after they left both of their infant children home alone while White drove Thomas to work on the morning of March 22.
<snipped>
The official cause of death was announced publicly for the first time Wednesday: The medical examiner determined it to be drowning, with contributing hypothermia.
The evidence presented in the case so far leaves open the possibility that Noah somehow got into the septic tank himself. An investigator testified Wednesday that the lid to the tank wasn’t heavy.

Noah Thomas case: Ashley White guilty of abuse, neglect

PULASKI — Ashley White, the mother of Noah Thomas, was found guilty of three felony counts of neglect and abuse on Friday after the judge said she left her two young children unattended twice on March 22 last year.
It was the same day 5-year-old Noah went missing and four days before his body was found in a septic tank near the family’s home.
Pulaski County Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Fleenor said after the verdict that it’s still unclear exactly how Noah came to be in the tank, but it was a tragedy that should never have happened.
“There’s no evidence she (White) deliberately killed Noah, but her action and lack of supervision certainly caused his death,” Fleenor said.
White’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 16.

Paul Thomas, Noah’s father, is also charged with child abuse and neglect in the case. His trial is scheduled for next month.
