At the time, the Medical Examiner determined the child was probably between 20 and 24 months old at the time of death, and had likely been sick or suffering from malnutrition when he died. However, more testing revealed that the child was likely between 3 and 5 years of age.

Reports at the time also say investigators believed the child had been dead for between six months and a year before the remains were found in the basement storage area by an apartment superintendent.

The unidentified child's remains were found in March 1976 in a blue metal storage trunk in the basement of an apartment complex on Winston Drive.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the child had brown hair and was found wearing a light blue pajama top with a deer design on the left chest area. He was also wearing a plastic diaper that was fastened with two stainless steel diaper pins.

The child had a prominent bulge on the back left of his skull, creating a large skull abnormality. It is likely the child had developmental deficiencies and could not walk, according to NCMEC.

Also, recent isotope testing on the remains indicate that he may not have been local to New York, according to NCMEC. Rather, the testing shows it's likely the child lived the first years of his life in the northwest U.S. and then in the southeast U.S.
Police and NCMEC are asking anyone with information about the case to call (800) 843-5678.
