As prosecutors turned over their first evidence in the case against Lori Vallow, her attorney is asserting the jailed Idaho mom’s innocence in the disappearance of her two children, who were last seen in September.

Disclosures in the evidence were not immediately revealed. The material — including police interviews, security video footage from a storage unit where items belonging to the missing children were found and security footage from the Idaho Falls airport and Yellowstone National Park, where the eldest of the two children was last seen — was delivered Monday by prosecutors to Vallow’s defense attorney, as part of a process known as “discovery,” according to online court records.

Authorities were alerted by a grandparent in late November to the disappearance of her children, 7-year-old Joshua “J.J.” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, and filed criminal charges last month against Vallow after she left Idaho and turned up in Hawaii, where she defied a court order to produce the children to police or child welfare officials.

She stands accused in Idaho of two felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children, as well as resisting or obstructing officers, criminal solicitation to commit a crime, contempt of court and willful disobedience of court process or order. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison if convicted, according to the Madison County prosecutor’s office.

MESA, Ariz. — Court documents filed this week provide bizarre new details about Lori Vallow Daybell’s missing children, her alleged religious beliefs and a shooting in Arizona.
There are a lot of characters in this story, so we’ll start with a description of who’s involved:

Lori Vallow Daybell – Mother under investigation for the disappearance of two of her children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan, who have been missing since September. She is in the Madison County Jail in Rexburg on two charges of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children.

Chad Daybell – Lori’s fifth husband. He married her shortly after his wife’s death. (Autopsy results on Tammy Daybell are pending.) He is thought to share her religious beliefs.

Melani Boudreaux Pawlowski – Lori Daybell’s niece. Melani was married to Brandon Boudreaux before he filed for divorce last year. She’s fighting for custody of her children, who Boudreaux currently has. Boudreaux says Melani knows where JJ and Tylee are, was involved in her aunt’s religious group and was connected to an attempt on his life. She strongly denies those claims.

Ian Pawlowski – Melani married Ian shortly after divorcing Boudreaux. Court documents show he worked with police as they investigated the whereabouts of JJ and Tylee.

Brandon Boudreaux – Brandon says he was shot at on Oct. 2 while returning to his Arizona home from the gym. Court documents referenced in this story come from his 70-page response to Melani’s filing that he be held in contempt for making false statements to the court.

Alex Cox – Lori Daybell’s brother who died suspiciously in December. Cox killed Lori’s fourth husband, Charles Vallow, allegedly in self-defense and Cox is suspected of shooting at Boudreaux.

Religious beliefs

In his filing, Boudreaux responds to Melani’s allegations with multiple exhibits, including receipts, housing contracts, copies of airplane tickets to Idaho and other items.

The most alarming details come from what Ian allegedly told his attorneys after meeting with law enforcement officers last fall. The filing does not detail how Boudreaux obtained the document, but three sources tell EastIdahoNews.com they came from Pawlowski’s computer.

In the filing, Ian explains religious beliefs that Melani allegedly shared with him early on in their relationship in the fall of 2019. One subject was “zombies,” meaning “human bodies that have had their original spirits forced from them and have been possessed by either a demon disembodied spirit or a worm/slug.”

BOISE, Idaho - Authorities say human remains have been found at an Idaho man’s home searched in an investigation into the disappearance of his new wife’s two children, who haven’t been seen since last year.

Chad Daybell was taken into custody Tuesday, according to police in the small town of Rexburg. Daybell, who recently married the children’s mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, has been one of the central figures in the case that has vexed investigators for months and attracted worldwide attention.

Rexburg Police Sgt. Gary Hagen confirms human remains have been found at the home of Chad Daybell in Fremont County.
The remains have not been identified.

Additionally, police have confirmed Daybell has been taken into custody for questioning, but not arrested or charged.

Several backhoes have also been spotted at the residence.

REXBURG, Idaho — Remains uncovered at Chad Daybell’s rural home in Idaho Tuesday are those of his wife’s children last seen in September, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 7, and his sister, Tylee Ryan, 17, their families confirmed.

“We are filled with unfathomable sadness that these two bright stars were stolen from us, and only hope that they died without pain or suffering,” the families said in a joint statement Wednesday. JJ’s grandparents Larry and Kay Woodcock, Tylee’s brother Colby Ryan, and his wife, Kelsee Ryan, asked for privacy while they process word of the children’s deaths.

As they grieved Wednesday, a judge set bail at $1 million for Chad Daybell, who is charged with concealing evidence after investigators made the grim discovery in his yard in Salem, just north of Rexburg, Tuesday.

(KUTV) — Chad Daybell's lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf Monday after his stepchildren's remains were found on his Idaho property last week.

Tylee Ryan, 17, and her adoptive brother 7-year-old JJ Vallow were last seen alive in September 2019. Their mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, has been behind bars since February for charges related to their disappearance.

Chad Daybell was taken into custody for questioning on Tuesday, June 9, more than three hours after law enforcement officers arrived at his home to serve a search warrant in regards to the then missing children.

The next day, Daybell was charged with two counts of felony destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence, court documents state.

The documents allege Daybell hid or destroyed human remains on two occasions between Sept. 22, 2019 and June 9, 2020 knowing that the remains would be discovered as evidence in a criminal proceeding.

If he is found guilty, Daybell would face a maximum of five years in the state penitentiary or up to $10,000 fine for each charge. The sentences could run consecutively or concurrently.

Chad Daybell's preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 1 and 2. His bail was set at $1 million. Daybell's attorney John Prior also requested a pretrial hearing, as well as a jury trial, court documents filed on Monday reveal.

IDAHO — Newly released court documents are shedding light on the disappearance of Joshua "J.J." Vallow and Tylee Ryan, whose remains were found last week on Chad Daybell's property in Idaho.

A probable cause affidavit for Daybell's arrest, filed June 10 in Madison County, outlines what led investigators to Daybell's home and ultimately to the remains of the missing children. This includes cell phone location data of the kids' uncle Alex Cox around the time of their disappearance, as well as text messages Daybell sent to his wife at the time.

Tylee, 17, was last seen Sep. 8, 2019 at Yellowstone National Park, while J.J., 7, was last seen on the 22nd. The FBI's Cellular Analysis Survey Team discovered through Cox's cell phone GPS that he was at Daybell's home on Sep. 9 and 23.

Prosecutors in Idaho’s Madison County filed the new charges against Lori Vallow Daybell late Monday, the latest turn in a case that has captured international attention.

They allege Daybell, 46, gave police false information when they questioned her in the search for her son, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, who was 7 years old at the time of his disappearance, and her daughter, Tylee Ryan, 17. Prosecutors say she urged her friend Melanie Gibb to do the same and did not produce the kids despite a court order.

So far, no one has been charged in the deaths of the children.

Chad Daybell — the stepfather of Lori Vallow's two children, who were found dead in early June months after their disappearance — is facing two new felony charges, court officials said Wednesday.

The news comes a day after after Vallow, who is married to Daybell and has said in court she prefers to be called Lori Daybell, faced in Idaho court the same felony charges of conspiracy to destroy, alter or conceal evidence.

Daybell has previously pleaded not guilty to destroying or concealing the children's bodies. He is scheduled to make an appearance in court Wednesday afternoon for the new charges, which court documents say were added Tuesday. That hearing will be held remotely, due to COVID-19 precautions.

Vallow appeared wearing a mask, next to her attorney, in a mostly-empty courtroom for a pre-trial hearing on the charges against her. Judge Michelle Mallard and prosecutor Rob Wood appeared via video conference.

The charges

Vallow faces two counts of resisting or obstructing officers, criminal solicitation to commit a crime and contempt of court, all misdemeanor charges. Two counts of desertion and nonsupport of children were dropped earlier this month. She also faces a pair of felony charges on conspiracy to destroy, alter or conceal evidence.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - A judge ruled Tuesday there’s enough evidence for a man to go to trial after the bodies of his new wife’s two children were found buried on his Idaho property. The bizarre case involving doomsday beliefs and the deaths of several people linked to the couple has attracted national headlines.

Chad Daybell, 52, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to hiding the remains of 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan. Investigators found their bodies during a search in June, months after they were last seen in September.

Daybell last year married Lori Vallow Daybell, who has pleaded not guilty to conspiring to help him keep the bodies of her children hidden. Authorities have yet to file charges related to the deaths of the children.

They also have yet to say how or when the children died, but the prosecuting attorney on Tuesday during closing arguments called both deaths homicides based on the condition of the bodies.

The two-day hearing included graphic testimony about unearthing the duct-tape bound body of the boy and the charred and dismembered remains of the girl.

ST. ANTHONY — The district court arraignment for Lori Vallow Daybell is scheduled for the afternoon of Aug. 27.

Daybell waived her preliminary hearing last week, moving her case automatically to the district court. Daybell is facing two felony counts of conspiracy to conceal, alter or destroy evidence in Fremont County.

The charges came after investigators discovered on June 9 the remains of her two children, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16, buried on the property of her husband, Chad Daybell.

The judge assigned to Lori’s case is District Judge Dane H. Watkins Jr. He typically handles cases in Bonneville County but can cover any hearing in the 7th Judicial District. At the arraignment, Daybell will enter a plea. If she pleads not guilty, a jury trial date will be set.

In Madison County, Lori is also charged with misdemeanor resisting or obstructing officers, criminal solicitation to commit a crime, and contempt of court. She pleaded not guilty to those charges, and a jury trial is set for Jan. 25 to 29 before Magistrate Judge Michelle Mallard.

Chad is charged with two felony counts of conspiracy to conceal, alter or destroy evidence. Prosecutors also charged him with two felony counts of concealment, alteration or destruction of evidence. He will appear for an arraignment on Aug. 21 in Fremont County to enter a plea.

FREMONT COUNTY, Idaho (KUTV) — Idaho prosecutors want to combine the criminal cases against Chad Daybell and his wife Lori Vallow Daybell, the mother of two children whose remains were found on Daybell’s property in June.

Special prosecutor Rob Wood and the state of Idaho moved to join the cases Wednesday, saying both defendants participated in the same series of acts, according to court documents obtained by KUTV News.

"Charges against defendant and the co-defendant allege they participated in same act or series of acts and conspired to commit the alleged act or series of acts," the motion reads.

The state argues that assigning the couple to different judges and holding separate hearings would "create an undue burden on the state by requiring repetitive work and hearings."

"Trials in these matters will require the same witnesses and evidence be presented by the state," a memorandum in support of the motion states.

Daybell pleaded not guilty in August to two felony counts of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence, and two felony counts of destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence.

Chad Daybell's attorney is asking an Idaho judge to dismiss the charges against him or try him in a different county than the one in which he allegedly concealed the remains of his wife's two children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan.

Judge Steven Boyce granted Chad's attorney, John Prior, more time to prepare for a hearing on Prior's motion to dismiss, court documents show. Prior's Aug. 27 motion claims that Fremont County special prosecutor Rob Wood did not present sufficient evidence against Chad during his two-day preliminary hearing, which Prior has requested a full transcript of to prepare his case for dismissal.

During the Aug. 3 and 4 preliminary hearing, Wood called numerous law enforcement officers, forensic experts and former friends to the stand as part of his case against Chad. A magistrate judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to move the case to district court. Now, district court judge Boyce has ruled that the court has until Oct. 1 to provide Prior with a transcript at Chad's expense, according to court documents.

Last week, Prior also filed a motion for change of venue, arguing that a "fair and impartial jury trial cannot be had in Fremont County."

Lori is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on felony charges of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence in Fremont County. Her attorney, Mark Means, recently filed a document asking for more time to file a motion to transfer her trial, signaling he may also seek a change of venue for Lori. Lori has previously pleaded not guilty and denies all allegations of wrongdoing.

If the prosecutor on the case gets his way, however, Chad and Lori will be tried together. Last week, Wood filed a motion to join their cases, writing that "due to the nature of the conspiracy charges alleged against the Daybells, the State's evidence in both cases is nearly identical and the trial for each case will be nearly identical."

Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell, the mother and stepfather of two Idaho kids who were last seen in September 2019, were indicted on first-degree murder charges Tuesday in the children's deaths.

Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan were 7 and 16 respectively when they disappeared.

Daybell was also indicted on a charge of first-degree murder and insurance fraud in the death of his then-wife Tammy Daybell.

Daybell is a self-published author who has written more than two dozen books about near-death and doomsday events, and multiple people close to Vallow have raised red flags about her bizarre doomsday beliefs and mental state.

Indictments released Tuesday said the couple “did endorse and espouse religious beliefs for the purpose of encouraging and/or justifying the homicides” of Tylee, Joshua and Tammy Daybell.

During Daybell's first court appearance Wednesday, he was informed of the charges he faces and potential sentences. His arraignment is scheduled for June 9.

Vallow also appeared in court Wednesday, but Judge Faren Eddins said the hearing would be postponed at the request of Vallow's attorney based on "information provided to the court." He didn't elaborate or set a new date.

Attorneys for Vallow and Daybell did not immediately return a request for comment. If convicted, they could face life in prison or the death penalty. Prosecutors in Idaho have 60 days to decide whether they will pursue the death penalty.
