Scared Monkeys Discussion Forum

We've been hinting at this for a few weeks now, and we'll soon be ready to unveil! Red and I wanted to make sure that all of the faithful here had plenty of notice ahead of time.

This is exciting!

Next Weekend, the Scared Monkeys sites (scaredmonkeys.com, scaredmonkeys.net, Scared Monkeys Radio, missingexploited.com  and yes, even the "shoe site") are going to relaunch with new features and a brand new look.

The web sites will all be going down for maintenance the evening of Friday, July 28, 2007. They will individually return, one at a time, throughout the weekend.

A few features to look forward to include:

- A new Scared Monkeys Logo
- New Monkey Merchandise
- New, easier to read and better organized blog pages
- New forum software (simple machines)
- New people! (we're reopening the forum doors to the public)
- Scared Monkeys Chat (our very own chat system, not something run by a freebie third-party service)
- RSS feeds for the Scared Monkeys Daily Commentary and Weekly Radio shows
- Restoration of lost blog comments (an ongoing task, but the process will begin upon relaunch)

As an important side note, the current products in the Scared Monkeys Store are going going bye-bye to make room for new products sporting the new Scared Monkeys logos. So, if you've been intending on purchasing something but haven't yet made your way over there to do so, you now only have a few days remaining. When the sites close for the migration, items with the current "Papyrus Font" logo will be considered VINTAGE!  :lol:

Red and I are super excited. We hope you guys are too! We also welcome your suggestions (in this thread only, please). We can't promise we'll incorporate them, but Red and I would like to hear your requests for new features or changes.

have no fear... the deactivactivate button is near... and there are other people being tapped to help Klaas and San... it will be good... you'll see!

Deactivate is a good thing IF it deactivates the IP address...not just their forum name. Coming back w/ new name is a favorite of many.

Is it possible to have PM's again? that could effectively eliminate the arguments by some about posters stating on the lively to check emails.

Also, just lessons learned from the past, do not share your email or pertinent personal information except with those you know well and can trust. A lesson I learned the hard way even with some of the former mods.

I agree with Sharon.  Having some of the archive resurrected was a plus...

Will we have to reregister or need how-to training?

During the maintenance period, we'll be out of town, so I'm hopeful  all goes well, no glitches, bugs & I'll return to new SM, up and running...good luck Dugga & Red....& thanks.

I vote for all of the above except the EDIT button.  I'd hate to see posters start deleting their entire posts like what happens at some other forums.  I know not having the edit button is irritating when we misspell things but it can be humorous as well.

How about "spell check".....?    :wink:

Some of these ideas are definitely going to be implemented.

Some of them will be implemented in new ways that you guys haven't seen done here before.

And some we won't be implementing at all.

But keep the comments coming. I am enjoying reading them.

Not to worry, the board will not be open for anonymous "guest" posting. Users will still need a valid account. But we are opening the forums up for new signups. We'll still be able to keep an eye on things.

That might help the folks who are behind, and feel that replies are ignored.  I noticed a few people mentioning that tonight.

Thanks Dugga, Red, and Kllas for all your hard work.  Guess I'll go to bed early when ya'll do your swithover thingamajig.  Looking forward to all the new stuff.

Did ya'll know that when you want to post a reply just right click the post reply thingy, then click on "open in new window"  type in your reply , hit submit, and then close that window.  You'll be right back where you were.   Yep, I do know sumpin about these machines.  :lol:   That's about it though.

Also if you need to leave, but want to save your place just right click on the last page you have read and save to "favorites" .  Then when you come back just click on favorites and click on the page you last saved.  Oh it's important to delete those pages from your favorites now and then cause you get so many pages listed you will get confused.  :oops:  :roll:  :lol:  8)    Now how cool is that!!

Just curious Klaas, about why it would be a problem of deleting an entire post, if somebody changes there mind or wants to reread it?  I just want it to edit my mistakes.  We all know Angie needs it!   :lol:
Yes, it can be funny at times, but it would save space, and less to posts to read through, when people need to repost to fix errors.....

Snoop, great ideas!  Though I knew it could be done,  I never thought of opening a new window for posting.  This is turning into a good tips thread too!

I am sure that has been thought of.  We have been through all this before and survived.  I would like to see an ability to edit my own posts.  Sometimes the pen falls from me poor little beak and me misspells or forgots a word or two.  

However, whatever!!!!!! :wink:

Could we have a little box near the page #'s with a go to page option please?

I signed off earlier and just a bit ago foun 2 emails from SM management, with a link to the page where I left off.  Not sure why I rec'd 2 but it worked fine...brought me right back.

The emails also went to my Bulk folder, where Spam goes, so I just marked them 'not spam'.

It's been so long, I don't even remember it we had this in 2005... :lol:

Oh... that was one of my suggestions... I hope so!

I checked my spam and didn't see anything in there or my inbox....

OK well like I have always said - life is all about change!!!  :D  Everything that lives is either growing or it's dying!!!  So I too, look forward to it.

However, fellow monkeys who know me --- sometimes I get ahead of myself or behind myself - so any technical help will be greatly appreciated should I need any!   If I miss something - just point me in the right direction.

Hmm, the ability to hide one's footprints in the form is not a problem technically, but I'll need to ask Red what he thinks of members hiding. I mean, it's no real secret when someone is reading a message, is it? I'm not sure I see why someone would want to other than hiding their overall online status and not letting others know when they may be on the site (although such things can be seen after the fact with post histories, etc)... I'll try to remember to mention it to Red and see what his opinion is.

I want to say thanks for all of the wonderful changes to SM!!!! It's great and I love it!

This isn't a big deal, and I don't want anything to jeopardize ( see, I can use that word because I have SPELL CHECK!!!  :-D ) my ability to log in to SM, but since "crazybabyborg" has so many letters and, at least on my screen, the "g" is cut off, and since everyone calls me "CBB" anyway.......I was just wondering if I could just change me name to officially be CBB? I wouldn't want to loose my post count and it's fine if changing it would be a hassle, but I was just wondering?

With the "g" cut off I end in "bor" and I'm not boring!  :lol:
