Elvis...

next week would be the 30 year mark of his death... and for a while when I was a teenager I would have eaten worms rather than admit that I liked him.  When I was a kid, LOVED him, LOVED his cheesy movies, loved the music.  My sister who is much older loved his slow and mushy songs... I really didnt' but he have some good songs...

now that I am an old woman, I have gone back to the camp of he was a legend, really a great icon of music...

so here are some of my favorites of his stuff... one of these I wanted Dana to be able to use as music in between guests, etc. but I know that the Elvis foundation is extremely protective of his stuff, as they should be.

I saw "The King" in concert when I was 5 years old at the Astrodome in Houston. He sang at the rodeo. I still remember seeing a tiny white shiny thing on stage way, far away (we had nosebleed seats).

This was in the days before bootlegging became a problem. My mom snuck in one of those old cheapie tape recorders to record the show. I think we still have it somewhere. You can hear my little kid voice yelling E-L-V-I-S! And I am heard asking "Mommy, why did they tell us Elvis had left the building?"

A good call, Mrs. Red. I am still a fan to this day.

When I was 12 (1956), I fell in love with Elvis. Even my grandma from Russia loved him. Her favorite was "Love Me Tender" and she'd ask me to play it over and over. 78 rpm. I recall mooning around for an entire summer. When my daughter was 12, she fell in love with him too. He was fascinating.

His 1968 TV black leather suit small stage concert reawakened my generation in a big way. It was his comeback and he demonstrated his genius. He could sit down with the musicians and sing and jam and make jokes, all the while looking gorgeous. Looking gorgeous is a gift from God. His voice grew richer over the years. He demonstrated that he could be a solid singer/performer in big stage event / production number - "If I Can Dream."

The concerts from Las Vegas and Hawaii ... I loved them all and have them on video.

I went to the beach the other day. I arrived at 11 a.m. and left at 4 p.m. I have 92 Elvis songs on my iPod. In five hours I heard 52 songs. I wanted to listen to more but I had to go home.

I also have a "set list" of the first group of songs I listen to. I call this my Aloha set list. Sometimes I play it three or four times. Also his articulation and elocution of words was superb.

So picture me on the beach. After I've spent one hour with my back to the sun while reading Rolling Stone and eating Taco Bell, I turn over to spend x number of hours of listening to music and tanning.

My favorite Elvis movie.

When we were in Kuaia, I made a point of going to the place where the wedding scene was shot.

What a great description, Louise! Moments like that afternoon on the beach with Elvis make life worth living, don't they?

Most of my moments like that come in the car on long road trips. Music can be so powerful.

My favorite movie is "G.I. Blues".  He sings "Wooden Heart" in English and then in German. 

My dad used to sing that song to me.

I love "Aloha From Hawaii" and watch it every time it's on.

"Surely The Presence" is a great song.  Elvis shoulda done more Gospel.  You could see that's where his heart was.

The song in the Ghetto used to make me cry as a little kid (2nd grade)....but he was so cool... in the LHJ for August they did some stories from ppl that knew him ... he was a complete contridiction, like most of us I guess...

I loved any and all of his movies!

As you can tell I love his Hawaii concert.  Actually the rehearsal concert was better in a lot of ways.  He seemed more relaxed.  Talk about a velvet voice...am I blushing?

Hey, easy on the comeback if it was in 1968....some of us may have been a couple years older :wink:...just kidding, of course.  I just watched part of an ABC show and found out that Elvis was Barbra Streisand's 1st choice for A Star is Born...Kris Kristoferson (sp?) got the role & a Globe award....seems to have added to Elvis's spiral since Parker nixed his involvement....a shame...

Lovely to listen to and look at...no doubt about it.

I loved GI Blues. When I saw it, I had already spent summers in Germany, not to mention that I studied German for four years.

I loved everything about Elvis!  My mom was a fan of his when I was little so I got introduced to his music early.  I got to see him perform about a year before he died and it hardly resembled him in the old days but I loved it anyway.  I still remember where I was when I heard the news that he had died.  I was totally devastated!  I had friends coming over to check on me!

LOL Casa...I still remember my Mum in the kitchen singing Wooden Heart,thanks for the memories. IIRC we have Brown Eyed girl in common too!

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!  one time I was riding my bike in germany and accidentally (BELIEVE ME ACCIDENTALLY) came across a nude beach.  my bike got caught in the sand just as a very big naked man was walking close to me.  Tried as I might, I could not get any traction on my bicycle.  I picked up my bicycle and ran as fast and far as I could and never looked behind me!!!

Where is Sea Searcher?  I think he is trying to figure out how to bring all the Elvis stuff from musings over here.  I invision a mad scientist working somehow with his scanner . . .

Hey Sea, Do you have Elvis's Moody Blue album? The one that is a beautiful blue color? I have it! I wonder how much it's worth now; although there's no way I'd ever part with it!
My favorite album is Live from Madison Square Garden. I swear we almost wore that one out when we were kids! We would stay a week with cousins & just have a blast dressing up like Elvis & lip syncing to all the songs. i still know every note & word to every song  ::MonkeyHaHa:: I don't ever remember a time when we didn't listen to Elvis!

And by the way, I do have Lisa Marie's cd's. Her music is very dark & moody & no she is not the singer her father is! But when that cd was released I wore that one out too! The "million dollar quartet" was a fluke get together of Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis..they just happened to get together one day in Sun records studio and started jamming together...Sam Phillips decided to turn on the recorder and the rest is history....

Have you seen Paradise Hawaiian Style ? It was filmed at the Hawaiian Cultural Center which I went to back when I was 11..the shows are just like in the movie but without Elvis, of course...It was really amazing and I still remember it..which is even more amazing  ::MonkeyHaHa:: I'll have to ask my mum if she still has the photo's

You highlighted the normal link and not the embedded hyperlink.  Remember you don't want the entire embedded only the part that shows up as a hyperlink in preview mode.

A little less conversation is a great song, both the original version and the Remix. It's one of only a handfull of songs that EP enterprises allowed to be redone, still using Elvis's voice...

Hi Monken...I did see your post, just way behind on commenting.. Yes, I have the Blue, Moody Blue album...it's in really good condition too..I don't play it much as albums wear fast so I wast to copy, or get the cd of it.. highest price I've seen on ebay for it is $45.00, I was shocked that it was so low..I would have bought it if I didn't already have a good one..
I'm not a big ebay person so it's possible others have sold for higher but that seller claimed it was brand new and still wrapped so...just sayin'

I also have the Pink album...that one is worth some money I'm told..not that I'd ever sell it.. I haven't seen it on ebay so I can't verify this rumor..just want to add..ebay is not the standard to go by, as my mum would say "one man's junk is another man's treasure" so a big Elvis fan will pay more than what is seen on ebay..

I talked to my mum, and she says that she has the Hawaii pics...not sure how interesting they are or how interested anyone is in seeing them..Elvis is, unfortunately, not in them..that much I'm sure of  ::MonkeyWink::

IMO...this is Elvis at his stage best...he put so much energy into this show and it really shows the incredible talent of Elvis...He really shows his old self in this concert and I'm amazed at how close he is to the audience...I don't have this on DVD yet but it won't be long...there are a few versions of the 68 special..but this is the one I have on VHS

SS I have yet to post in the Caylee thread. But have enjoyed your posts. Don't be gone long. It is great that you have such passion for Elvis. I don't think there has been one movie I haven't seen. Love his gospel music. There really isn't anyone that I can say has his talent. (or had) In fact my husband gave me my engagement ring at the drive in while we were watching Frankie & Johnny. Now that ages me oh well. Pray your FIL and sister get the best medical care. I pray for you and your family. I know how had it is to have your love ones sick and feeling like you can't do a thing. It's nice to see another Elvis fan...my obsession for him and his music is only 10 years old so I am really envious of those who got to grow up with his music and love to hear personal stories & experiences..I'm so glad you like his Gospel music, he had the perfect voice for it and many of my younger friends didn't even know he sung gospel until I enlightened them..If you haven't seen it already, there is a great special called "He Touched Me, the Gospel music of Elvis Presley" a must see for Elvis fans, someone put part of it on YouTube but it's all stretched out..so I didn't link it here..but here's a nice one, some of the pics I've never seen before and I especially like the last one..

Hi Monken..I don't think it's limited to the UK but was probably pressed there..the place to order it looks like Texas ??? not sure..My mum thought it might be worth a couple of hundred dollars so that's what I meant as cheap..$60.00 for an album is not cheap by any standards.
If my guess is right, my mum probably paid two dollars for it...she has a knack of doing things that way in her business..

Hi Sparky...the fact that I was upset, is what concerned me most..I could have argued the point but that seemed futile..and would just take up space. No big deal, can keep up better just lurking most of the time anyway..things are quiet now and probably will be until the trial which sounds like it will be a loong way off...so I can have some fun here and catch up on my facebook stuff..

Hi Trimm... I hope this is the one you're looking for, Elvis recorded it a couple of times but I think the Aloha performance is the best..he was kind of stiff in this concert as he didn't want to make any mistakes broadcasting to the whole world. As many know, he would forget lines stumble around on stage in kind of a stupor which was partially due to his bad sight but mostly from the drugs he was taking.
For this concert, he trimmed  ::MonkeyTongue:: down and worked hard. It was just the challenge he had been lacking in his life for the past couple of years. After this concert, everything really went down hill, so I like to remember him this way.

Hey Sea, i got the pics of Elvis' birthplace. There really is not much to them other than that.Gotta scan them 1st!  These were taken in the 70's but from the website it still looks the same. They do have some other things there now though,chapel, museum etc. The following I copied from the site, take care!
Birthplace Facility


This house was built in 1934 by Vernon, Vester and their father, Jesse Presley. Vernon Presley borrowed $180.00 from Mr. Orville Bean, the man he worked for in a dairy at that time. Vernon was very proud of the fact that he built the interior door all by himself. The hammer they used is in the museum.

On January 8, 1935, Gladys Presley gave birth to twin boys in this room. Jesse Garon was stillborn. The other twin was named Elvis Aaron Presley.

Work was hard to find. When Elvis was about two and a half years old, Vernon lost the house for lack of payment. At that time the family moved next door to live with Vernon’s parents, Minnie and Jesse.

Over the next few years Vernon and Gladys worked at various jobs in and around Tupelo. Gladys sewed for Reed Manufacturing and Tupelo Garment Company. Vernon drove a truck for L.P. McCarty and another wholesale company. He also did some sharecropping. The family moved several more times in Tupelo. When Elvis went from Lawhon to Milam School the family moved closer to Milam school.

Elvis would often take his guitar to the overlook and play it while looking over the lights of Tupelo. Often he would dream of a better day and a greater, more meaningful life for himself and his family.

Vernon worried about his family and their future in Tupelo. In November of 1948 when Elvis had just begun the eight grade, Vernon decided to move the family to Memphis in hopes of finding a better way of life for the Presley's. They sold all the furniture that they had at the time, loaded what was left in and on top of their 1939 Plymouth and headed for Memphis. And as you all know, the rest is history.

The furniture in the house today is NOT the original furniture but is accurate to the time period when the Presley's lived here. It is similar and placed in the approximate location as it was when they lived here, according to Vernon Presley. The basic structure is original. The ceiling and roof have been replaced. The house is located on the original location it was built

AWESOME, I have never been over here.  I was and am a big fan of elvis and remember watching the movies he did with my dad.  My dad loved to sing too and there are several songs that make me think of him and cry.....  Keep up the great work Sea, I will have to check out the rest of this thread.

This one is a live recording and has some really cool backstage footage. It is pretty scary, my Dad is still under the weather.  My son's anxiety went through the roof and he never went to sleep last night, so he was home today.

The doctor put me on steroids today to help with the pain, so I should either start feeling better or need my chest waxed!

Thanks, your caring and humor bring a smile to my face without fail, even though the walls are crumbling at the present time.  My son was sick since before the holidays.  He went back to school for a short time and we had another 4 day holiday and there was snow on the ground.  He panicked, for one thing he had too much time off and for another he was stuck in elementary school once for 4 hours after the other kids left because his bus could not make it through the snow. 

He will be okay.  It will just take a while.  I lifted and turned him too much over the weekend while he slept because his air kept cutting off.  It was only a matter of time before I was hurting.  I have told you my son has autism, haven't I?

Thank you for all of your prayers, CBB, your talents astound me.  I am trying to give myself a break.  Last year at this time I would not have called my doctor, so I am improving.  I didn't want to undo what he already did for me.  Last May I had to use a wheelchair to get around, I don't want to do that again.  You can teach an old young bear new tricks.

I wanted to tell you SS that Elvis was " everything" to my Dad. My Dad when he was young was always told that he resembled Elvis. My Dad was born in 1932, so they would be similar in age at the same time. As Elvis, my Dad's Father's side has Cherokee Indian within ancestry. He * Dad grew up in one of the poorest area's of Kentucky, and his parents ( my Grandparents )then moved to Mich to build a Church. And that they did.
I do not know the matter of facts of what on the Church, though I do know it did exist for a long while. It did however pass hands before I was born. 
My Dad when he was young, had Jet Black hair, and always looked as he had a tan, and my Dad had dreamy Mint green eyes..snow white straight teeth, Tall and Muscular and lean. And he took pride in how he dressed, always was in the Mirror ... um hmm.  More so than his Sister ... not kidding :)
My Dad was always teased by his brothers because my Dad would put a curler in his hair with Dippity-do...to set his Curl just right ... Before he would get all dressed up to go out and Play on a Saturday night. Then my Dad was drafted into the Military ..and even stationed in Korea ..he was teased .. and the Name Elvis would come into chatter.

My Dad, I remember, The First time I ever saw my Dad Cry was when we were on Vacation ... we were in a little motel in up state NY .. on our way to Maine. We had been driving forever .. and My Dad turned on the Radio in the Room, because he is a News Junkie and then he heard the News that Elvis had passed away ... within that last hour or so ..
My Dad yelled at everyone BE QUIET .. and he had his head right up to that radio. He got up from his seat and locked himself in the bathroom.  Could hear the water running and he came out a few minutes later ... He sat right back in his seat ...and He just Burst into tears ......
Nothing was said, the room was silent and it was very hard to see my Dad cry ..but it was too very much needed for him to do so ...
He, My Dad, to this day won't talk about Elvis. He still listens to his Music. He still Loves Him. In my Dad's Mind " Elvis" will never Die...he forever is his Brother.
And that's a good thing.

Hi Deenie...Thank You for sharing that story about your dad...Your father is a little older than my MIL, but she's told me how devastating it was for her and her friends when they first learned about Elvis passing on (I like to use that term because my belief is that nobody "dies" ..we all go somewhere and for some that's a good thing, and for others..not so good) After hearing my MIL's stories, I feel I can relate to what your dad must have felt. Seems like the whole world cried when Elvis move on..

I laughed when you mention the teasing he got in the Army..I'm assuming the picture that you posted is actually Elvis....would you be able/willing to post an old pic of your dad for a comparison ?? Hi, Always. Don't worry about guests. I've been a "guest" for months now. Been so busy at work that I was only able to read; couldn't get caught up enough to post. I started vacation on Friday; been reading ever since in Caylee's thread to get caught up...soon as I did, you all moved over here!

About Elvis...he was my mother's heart throb when she and Dad first married. I guess that explains why Dad didn't like Elvis. Dad tells a story of Elvis passing through their home town and eating at the little BBQ joint (called The Choctaw) where Dad was a lowly busboy. Elvis handed Dad one of his signed photos. Dad took it to the kitchen and GAVE IT AWAY. Mother never forgave him.

I just love coming here and reading everyones happy memories about Elvis. I am waiting to see what Monken finds in here Elvis box. It's always so much fun to look though our things after they have been put away for awhile, and thank her for the pictures she posted they are great. I never got to see Elvis in person so I really was glad to see the pics from his show. I want to thank SS for the welcome. Have yet to post in the Caylee thread. But enjoy reading everyones thoughts. I remember my dad was a big Elvis fan also. He bought our first stereo so he could play Old Shep. My sibs remember other songs but that's the first one I remember. I grew up with Elvis singing in the background.

 I was just a ten year old kid in 1957 when my mother took me to see Elivis at the Empire Stadium at PNE Park in Vancouver.  We went on the bus with my friend and her mother.  We were at the swooning stage but ... I do believe it was our mothers who were smitten.

Anyways ... I had these kid binoculars that I was looking through when the convertible  carrying Elivis drove around the track on his entrance.  Elvis was sitting on the trunk with feet on the back seat.   Anyways ... with the binoculars he was thinkclose.

Later in the show the stadium went wild.  Teenage girls were screaming and ... swarmed the stage.  Elivis had to be taken away prior to the end of the show.

It was a memory that has never faded.

Thanks...my kids are my life..I'm home all day and night but when ever they see me...it's like I just came home from the office in the old days...of course they are still very young so that might change when I have to lock them up once they reach teen years..I'm very nervous about the girls growing up..I'll have to pretend I'm a driver and escort them once they start dating..in around 30 years or so  ::MonkeyHaHa::

Hey Guys, I have found some of my Elvis stuff!!! I haven't found it all; but this is a good start!! i scanned some of the newspaper and magazine articles from 1977. i was on vacation with my family in Orlando when we got the news of his death. i have the  frontpage of the Orlando Sentinel from the next day. Hi SS - thank you for your reply. Yes that is a photo of Elvis. I do have a Photo of my Dad standing on the tarmac * I believe he is Japan. I have to find it. When I do I will Certainly post it. Its a great shot because it's him " Head to Toe" and he is close to the Camera. Yah My Dad was in the Navy and he was a Corpsman. He trained in Pensacola Florida and then was sent to Korea. I love this song.  I think it is clever.  When I first heard the album I never thought they would try to release the song on the radio and never gave it a second thought.  Then I heard parents freaking out because their little ones were singing it.  They were singing it not because they heard it on the radio but because they, as parents, let them listen to the cd.  I would love to ask these parents...don't "you", as a parent, listen to/watch/read things before you give your little one's the ok?  I think that if you are going to buy a cd and let your little one listen to it then you should know what is on that cd!! IMOO.

I just love all the songs you have posted. didn't you just love the pics and stuff Monken posted. I was reading the other night about some of Elvis movies. I thought I had seen them all. I found one from March of 68 I think Stay Away Joe between Clam Bake and Speedway. Then in March of 69 his last movie Charro he didn't sing in this, just sang the title song. I was in DC during the Riots after MLK was killed. So I figured that's why I don't remember that one. Stay way Joe I have no idea. I found my one and only Elvis collectible. I have a paper record 33 of his that he made when he went into the army and sent out to some of his friends. My grandmother was pen pals with one of his army buddies mom. He sent it to her, she it give to my sister at the time because she was such an Elvis fan with a note on the back from Elvis. When my sister got married her husband was up set that she was so crazy about him. She gave it to me. That's the one thing in all my moves over the years that I made sure never got lost or given away. Hope you have a great day tomorrow. Actually "Charro"  was the third to the last film Elvis released (I say released as I assume they were released in the order that he made them) Next was "The Trouble with Girls" (which I posted a couple of vids from) and finally "Change of Habit" ..But this was the last year of his movie contract so he could get back on the stage which he really wanted to do...The 68 special was the first step back from Hollywood.
This is a great movie...Really! ::MonkeyTongue:: ..so much different to the normal girls, beaches and club performer movies that many laugh about..The story was written & directed by Charles Marquis Warren, who also created Gunsmoke, Rawhide and The Virginian. It's great to see Elvis in a serious role..he could have done so many more if Parker had allowed him, but money was all Col. Parker was after and the music/girls combo, made it for him...Your right, only one song..and here it is!

Thanks for the videos on the movies. I agree with you it's a shame Parker was only looking to line his own pockets and not what would have best for Elvis. I will have to get the Charro movie. To think of some of the classic movies that Elvis was ask to be in and Parker said no. It is a same we lost a brilliantly talented man so young. I love to watch his black leather special, he really just kept getting better as far as I am concerned.
As for the paper record I know that sounds silly but they use to put them out back in the 50's. The note is hand written by Elivs. It's been packed for so long I will have to look. I can scan no problem. Just not sure how to post here on SM without it being toooooooooo bigggggggggg. Will try to get it all together in the next couple days and try and post.
If I was a really nice sister I guess I should give it back to my sister since she got the big D from her hubby some years back. Thanks again for all the music.

That makes me really happy A-1...music always brings back good memories for me as well, with both of my parents...we were a musical family. My mum sung opera and introduced me to ballet......My dad is a very good piano player...I love it when he plays Scott Joplin ragtime or Andrew Lloyd Webber's music.. We all share a love for Classical music (all sorts) and Tom Jones...now that I'm an Elvis nut..I guess we share that too.

About the paper records... I remember paper records being on the back of cereal boxes when we were little. We would cut them out & play them. They wouldn't sound all that great, but good enough. Don't wear youself out with all the redecorating. We can wait for more pictures. Our April and May were like your Jan. & Feb. until we moved away. Miss all the fun. Hubby and I visited his home in Graceland in January....loved it...It was as if you could feel his presence there...I could picture him being there with all of the things that he loved...I want to go back again in the spring and spend more time there....this time with some other girls...hubby was good about it but he wasn't as big of a fan as I am...

Not a dumb question ::MonkeyHaHa:: I haven't read it...I'm told it's a good read and Priscilla was always very "praisefull" (is that a word?) of Elvis even though their marriage suffered with his stardom...I'd love to hear some of the things she had to say about their lives together..never read much of that.

Sea...from what I have read, it is a beautiful love story...I think that she loved him until his dying day...the book so far is really a good read...
My brother just got back from Graceland ....He is a huge fan of Elvis's  ...even does impersonations of him at Nursing homes and at different places....dresses up like him and sings his songs...the old folks love it...their eyesight and hearing is not so great so he is a huge hit

Do you think that if Elvis were still alive today he would have ever reached the popularity that he reached in his death?  Do you think he would still be a prominant figure in pop culture, or a washed up wanna-be (ie: Steven Tyler getting there)?

I am not Sea Searcher, but that is a good question. I have thought about this over the years as well. There are a lot of variables to the answer. One being if Elvis had lived and not gotten hooked on prescription drugs yes I believe he would still have been a prominant figure in the music world. Another problem was his manager he needed someone to look out for his (Elvis) best interest not his (Parker) pocket book. Another was the death of his mother. It seems that he really needed help with her passing.
Even with all this I truly believe his talent would have only gotten better with the years. You can hear the difference in his vocal strengths (the growth) of his talent over the years he was with us. He had an amazing voice. That seemed to me only got better with age. Then maybe I just want to believe he would have continued to be the King of Rock & Roll.
It is sad he never got to live long enough to grow into what his full talent abilities could have been.
This is just my opinion. It will be interesting to see what SS has to say.

There will never be another Elvis! He opened up the world  to music that was unheard of at that time, he pushed the envelope. There is rarely a music personality that doesn't admire Elvis and his music. I do believe that, if he had lived, he would have continued to produce hit after hit. That was a given. His music is timeless. i do believe he suffered from depression and used drugs as an escape. He should have sought treatment after his mother's death. But that was at a time when most men would not have done that. Even though he is gone his music will live on forever. His looks, his charisma, his sound can never be duplicated! It's amazing; my granddaughters are 3 & 10 & they know Elvis when they see or hear him, another generation to love him! Hugs!  ::MonkeyRoll::

speaking of ST...I saw him perform in the Cape Cod Coliseum and quite frankly...he suc*ed...people were booing him off the stage and throwing things at him..my group left early...then I saw him play are Great Woods after he cleaned up his act.... he was a new person..Guns & Roses was the big thing then and they had equal billing but after G & R was finished...Aerosmith came out and showed them how it's done...G & R has to be the worst live group I've ever seen...it's amazing what they can do to doctor up a record

First…I don’t think Elvis became “more popular” because of his death unlike several overrated...IMO...performers who did become idolized after death (Jimmy Hendricks and Jim Morrison to name 2 off the top of my head) Elvis’s estate became more wealthy because of Priscilla's management and the elimination of Col. Parker, but his popularity never decreased as he was the King, and packed the house everywhere he played right up to his passing…

I agree totally with Monken…There is only, and will only be, one Elvis…he is the King and broke enormous barriers in the world of music in his younger days and over time, his voice just kept getting stronger and more defined…I also agree with Green Eyes that there are so many IF’s to your question..especially about Col. Parker and the drugs, which were symptoms of the enormous depression Elvis was feeling and had felt for many years…I think because of his mothers death, which he never fully recovered from, and the failure of his marriage (which may also be connected to his mother..in guilt)

If somehow Elvis was revived…I don't think he would have continued in music as he was already refusing to record songs before August 1977…the difference (not including talent and voice) between Steven Tyler and Elvis, was that ST wanted to continue being a performer and LIVING his life…Elvis had theoretically, died long before 1977..I would say sometime in 1973-1974…when I watch him perform the Aloha concert..I almost see a farewell message in his eyes.. he had no will to live anymore. He’s quoted as saying “I’m sick of being Elvis” he couldn’t go out anywhere during the day..he couldn’t go see a movie unless he rented the theater after hours, just for himself and the MM (which were his only “friends”) ..he couldn’t go shopping without asking the storeowner to open up after hours just for him..he led his life totally at night and slept though the days. If you’ve ever seen footage of him leaving a concert, he’s running, literally, for his life. Because of all those things, he no longer wanted to be Elvis. Personally, I think he would have become a recluse..more so than he already was....

To sum up my feelings…without a strong intervention by someone (and I can’t think of anyone capable) he would have disappeared but always have remained the King…like the Royal family in England..how often do we see them in public ? but there is always a huge crowd around them. Now if the depression was treated and the drugs stopped..I definitely think we would have seen many more hit songs and great performances. His voice is unmatched and his talent limitless, Parker would have to go (footnote: it’s definitely an arguable point that without Parker, Elvis wouldn’t have achieved the stardom he had, but Parker was out for himself and his own bank account) and he would need a new manager (perhaps Priscilla) that would set up his own production company...maybe today at 74 he would been managing some new talent...and we might have a few decent singers again...but that's a big "IF"

Sorry, I’m not a very good writer and really not what I’d consider an “expert” on Elvis which is why I wanted to take some time and read up, before trying to answer this..I'm sure I wrote more than you needed but somewhere in the mess, I hope you make some sense of what I’ve said..

Didn't go on vacation...although I could really use one..been very chaotic around here the past couple of weeks....I needed to take a break from the net for a few (although I wasn't planning to be gone this long) and then a very tragic event happened..I have very close friends who's house and barn burned to the ground..they've lived there for 30 years and lost, literally everything, including their livestock...out of fear, the sheep naturally ran into the barn for safety and the whole thing collapsed on them. Fortunately the family is alright but the farm is also their livelyhood, so you can just imagine how bad this is...community outpouring is amazing and I think the house and barn can be rebuild before the winter comes again but you can never replace 30 yrs of memorabilia,photos, etc.

I can't believe how many have been concerned about my absence...was the coffee really that good ?  ::MonkeyHaHa:: It's actually kinda gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to be missed somewhere in the world...even Klass  ::MonkeyTongue:: I'll try to pop in a bit more often but as you can imagine...things are busy to say the least

don't know if I had mentioned this before but my brother is a huge fan of Elvis' ...he has his own Elvis room and impersonates him...goes to retirement homes and sings for the residents there ...his wife makes his costumes for him...they really enjoy it...He is having his annual Elvis birthday party tomorrow night at his house...in his Elvis room...You go brother! While watching TMC tonight they had Elvis Special. It was said that they are going to have a CD set of all 700 songs Elvis sang. I went to Elvis.com but couldn't find any thing. Just thought I would pass it on. They didn't say when but some time this year.

I went back and watched the Elvis special this morning and I swear Priscilla said 700 songs. Husband said that's what he heard to. But the only thing I can find is 75 songs put together for his 75 birthday. That's got to be what they were talking about. Since this was a special for his 75th birthday that makes more sense.

The best one was they recorded his rehearsals and then the entire show when he played at the MGM Grand in 1970. I have seen bits and pieces of it on other shows and utube.
When I hear more about the special release I will be sure to post it. Hope you are staying warm.

I love his rehearsal footage...I think the 70 concert is "Elvis, That's the way it is ! " ??? might be others too.....I have a tape (yes a VHS ::MonkeyHaHa:: ) called "Elvis, The Lost Performances" which has a lot of rehearsal footage....soooooo cool ::MonkeyCool::

What I'd like to get (yes I am missing some Elvis) is the "Aloha form Hawaii Deluxe" which has the "The Alternate Aloha Concert" ie. the rehearsals for that Awsome show...I have the concert itself but I'm told the rehearsal is even better as Elvis was very "stiff" in the concert.. It's on my shopping list ::MonkeyCool::

I bet it is wonderful. I know we both really enjoyed the special this time. His 68 Comeback special and the Alhoa Concert are both wonderful. But after seeing the rehearsal footage from Vegas and the MGM Grand where you got to see him being him self and just singing was awesome.

At the time of his death it was reported that The King had died from cardiac arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat brought on by drug addiction, obesity and a bum ticker. 

But now El's pal and personal physician  Dr. George "Nick" Nichopoulos, who tried to resuscitate him that fateful day, has finally revealed the true cause of death in his new tell-all The King and Dr. Nick.

"After he died we weren't sure (the exact cause of death) so I continued to do some research and I had some doctors call me from different places and different med schools that were doing research on constipation and different problems you can get into with it.  " Dr.Nick writes.

According to the physician, now retired, the autopsy revealed Presley's colon was 5 to 6 inches in diameter (the normal width is usually 2 to 3 inches) and instead of being 4 to 5 feet in length, his colon was 8 to 9 feet in length.

"We didn't' realize until the autopsy that his constipation was as bad - we knew it was bad because it was hard for us to treat, but we didn't realize what it had done.

"We just assumed that the constipation was secondary to the meds that he was taking for his arthritic pain and for his insomnia."

In 1975, the primary treatment was a colostomy, the removal of the colon but according to the book, Presley's "ego" got in the way.
 
"He was embarrassed.

"He'd have accidents onstage. He'd have to change clothes and come back because of the way we were trying to treat his constipation.

"If they had done the colostomy then, he'd probably still be here," Nichopoulos said.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee -- Hundreds of Elvis Presley fans, including Chilean miner Edison Pena, gathered Saturday at Graceland to sing "Happy Birthday" on the late rock n’ roll icon’s 76th birthday.

Pena, the guest of honor at Elvis’ birthday party, cut into a 4-foot high cake fashioned to look like stacked television sets as fans cheered both the singer and the miner outside Elvis’ longtime Memphis home.

An avid Elvis fan, Pena has been on a whirlwind tour of Memphis, getting a private tour of Graceland, attending a Memphis Grizzlies NBA game and leading the walking of the ducks at the Peabody Hotel.

Pena and 32 other miners spent 69 days trapped underground after a mine collapse in Chile. Pena sang Elvis songs to lift the morale of his friends before their rescue in October. He speaks little English—except for the words of Elvis tunes—and has been using a translator.

"It’s a pleasure to be here, with so many beautiful people," Pena said in Spanish. "I never thought I would survive, and escape my trap. This is a gift from God. Viva Elvis. Viva Memphis."

Then, he uttered two newly learned words in English of the Southern variety: "Hey y’all." That drew loud laughter from the crowd.

Some fans asked Pena for a song, so he led everyone in singing Elvis’ "The Wonder of You." He was reluctant at first—he’s been asked to sing by fans and media at nearly every turn—but he showed off his good singing voice once again and did some of Elvis’ trademark pointing and swirling arm motions.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton read a list of musical artists who’ve said they were influenced by Elvis’ music and performance style, from Elton John to John Lennon.

"Before people over fainted over Michael Jackson, screamed over Van Halen, swooned over the Jonas Brothers, and even goo-gooed over (Lady) Gaga, Elvis Presley set the world on fire," Wharton said.

Elvis was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Miss. His birthday, while meaningful to Elvis fans around the world, does not attract the throngs of people who make the pilgrimage to Graceland to remember his death. He died Aug. 16, 1977.

Jerry Engelby, of Jefferson City, Mo., has been an Elvis fan since she was 13. She comes to Memphis as often as she can.

"He’s been part of my life for almost 60 years," said Engelby, 68. "I love my youth. When I come back, I relive my youth with Elvis."

Some fans were as eager to see Pena as they were to honor the king of rock n’ roll.

Sue Mack waved at Pena and took photos of the miner.

 

"I followed the miners the entire time they were under there,"

Mack said. "When I found out he was an Elvis fan, I said ‘I’ve got to see him.’ He was the topping to the cake today."

Standing nearby, Pat Parris asked Pena in Spanish to give her a kiss. He obliged.

"He’s so sweet. You never meet a real hero," Parris said.

For one moment, Edison Pena again did what seemed impossible: He was bigger than Elvis.

Graceland may remove Presley's old airplanes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — For 30 years, tourists from around the world have paid money to get a look at two airplanes once owned by Elvis Presley at Graceland in Memphis. Fans enjoy touring the planes for their direct connection to Presley and his jet-setting lifestyle, a sort of touchstone to the life of the King of Rock and Roll and his family.
By April of next year, the planes named Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II could be gone.
Elvis Presley Enterprises, which operates the Graceland tourist attraction, has written to the planes' owners saying they should prepare to remove the jets from Graceland by next spring.
The planes have been a tourist attraction since the mid-1980s. They had been sold after Presley's death, and were eventually purchased by OKC Partnership in Memphis.
OKC Partnership and Graceland agreed to bring the two jets to Graceland. The agreement called for OKC Partnership to receive a cut of ticket sales in return for keeping the planes there.
In an April 7 letter to OKC Partnership's K.G. Coker, Elvis Presley Enterprises CEO Jack Soden says the company is exercising its option to end the agreement and asks Coker "to make arrangements for the removal of the airplanes and the restoration of the site on or shortly after April 26, 2015."
Their removal could cause an uproar among fans, especially those who visit Graceland every year as part of an annual pilgrimage to events such as Elvis Week and the candlelight vigil commemorating Presley's death.
Dedicated Elvis fan Paul Fivelson of Algonquin, Illinois, says he expects many fans will be upset to hear the planes may be leaving.

The disclosure also raises questions about the future use of the site where the airplanes now sit, across the street from Presley's longtime home.
Elvis Presley Enterprises declined immediate comment.
In November, New York-based Authentic Brands Group bought Elvis Presley Enterprises and the licensing and merchandising rights for Presley's music and image from CORE Media Group. As part of the deal, Joel Weinshanker, founder of the National Entertainment Collectibles Association, acquired the operating rights to Graceland, which attracts about 500,000 visitors each year.
After the sale, Authentic Brands said upgrades to the tourist attraction were planned. Earlier this year, Elvis Presley Enterprises announced plans to build a 450-room hotel, theater and restaurant, with a projected opening date of August 2015. Their plan was approved Tuesday by the Memphis City Council.
Today, Graceland visitors can buy a ticket that includes a tour of Presley's home-turned-museum and the two airplanes. Fans climb into the airplanes for an up-close look at their interiors.
The larger plane, a Convair 880 named after Presley's daughter Lisa Marie, is like a customized flying limousine, complete with a large bed, a stereo system, conference room and gold-plated bathroom fixtures. It was renovated after Presley bought it from Delta Air Lines. Presley took his first flight on it in November 1975.
When Presley died on Aug. 16, 1977, Presley's pilot flew the Lisa Marie to California to pick up Presley's ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, to bring her back to Memphis.
The smaller jet, a JetStar named the Hound Dog II, was also used by Presley.
At one point, after the planes were sold following the singer's death, the Lisa Marie was owned by Raymond Zimmerman, owner of the Service Merchandise chain, according to Coker. The Hound Dog II was in the hands of Hustler head Larry Flynt for a time, Coker said.
OKC Partnership eventually bought the planes and the Lisa Marie was installed at Graceland in 1984. The Hound Dog II came later.
Coker, 76, says OKC may sell the planes if they're removed from Graceland, but he still hopes to negotiate a deal that would keep the planes there. Coker acknowledges that he and his partners would lose money from ticket sales if the planes were removed.

Candlelight vigil marks Elvis' death in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Holding flickering candles, fans of Elvis Presley made a slow, nighttime walk past his gravesite at Graceland on Friday, marking the anniversary of his death 37 years ago.
Fans strolled quietly through the Mediation Garden at Graceland, Presley's longtime Memphis, Tennessee, home. Presley's grave is in the garden, and his mother, father and grandmother are buried there.
The home is now a museum and a centerpiece of the Graceland tourist attraction that draws about 500,000 fans each year from around the world.
