One of my neighbors did this for Halloween..

Took a very large Tide plastic container. Put water in it to hold it down and put it in the tub to soak off the labels. She did it with another shaped Tide container. 

The labels came off put she had to use the green scrubbing pads to get off the glue.

Then she took pumpkin stencils and cut them out of the containers. Put a hole in the bottom and put a one light thingie in there and plugged it in. Left the blue tops on. Shines better than a pumpkin.

Really neat!

Just got back from dinner.  My husbands stepsister and her husband live in San Diego County in an area called Rancho Santa Fe.  Lot's of houses burned down in that area.  They evacuated the other night and still can't go back.  They happen to own a business flying helicopters so they were able to fly over and see that their house was spared. 

They had JUST, before the fire cleared the area around their home..you can still see the equipment in the field.  Their home is the one with the 2 solar panels on the roof.

This will blow the margins for some...sorry.  But it's a cool photo:

I heard on the news that Eucalyptus trees were highly flamable and that as the fires approached them, they "popped" like machine guns. They said that they were ornamental trees used in landscaping around homes. I think that if I lived in a fire prone area, my yard would look like your in-laws bare field! It looks like they saved their home and probably others with their effort!

Yep, came that close.  It skirted all around their property but their house wasn't touched.  I'm sure that's because they had just cleared all the brush away.

Yes, in Orange County the Santiago fire there are alot of Eucalyptus trees.  I hate those trees.  Besides being very flamable, they drop leaves and branches all the time.  They are a mess.

There is an area called Lake Forest...not far from the Santiago fire in Orange County.  The "Forest" part of Lake Forest is tons of Eucalyptus trees with houses.  I never could figure out why anyone would want to live in the forest part of Lake Forest.

Yup it helps bigtime..Look's like that is what saved there home for sure!! I spent some time in Lake Arrowhead and we did alot of Fire Break..Clearing off all the dry brush away from our home..When those Santa Ana's are blowin and the weather is hot and you have arsonist's its a deadly mix. Some of those homes by remote canyons theres not much they can do :(

Great pics, Klaas.  Thank goodness their home was spared,  they are so fortunate!  Eucalyptus trees are what fueled the Oakland Hills firestorm in 1991.  They are very oily and therefore highly flammable.

Yep.  Alot of firewood you buy in bundles is Eucalyptus.  Very flammable but excellent for a fireplace.

I guess they burst into flames, so the popping is the sound of the small explosions when they ignite.  Just a guess.

Observation for Dugga:

If one goes directly to Dana's show via the 'Radio' button, one can listen to the podcasts & leave a comment.

If one goes to the front page, one can access Dana's most recent show & listen to the podcast and/or leave a comment.

I've left a couple of comments on the Radio section but observed that a majority go to the front page to do so, following the broadcast or after listening to the podcast from there.  Since the two are separate, the comments on the Radio section are obscure.....I guess I'm just wondering why the front page doesn't redirect viewers/listeners to the Radio site from the front page.

That's a great observation, and one that Red and I have discussed at length. The radio site basically duplicates content on the front page at the moment. Or vice versa depending on how you look at it.

I think that might change in the future as we expand Scared Monkeys Radio, but for right now we're simply continuing to do it the same way it has been done from the beginning, giving users the option to comment in either place. It's not ideal to have it work that way, and it's not permanent. We do hope to eventually move all audio and comments over to the radio page. But for right now, the radio page is just a baby and we're working on establishing it. When it grows legs we hope to be able to "cut the cord" a little bit and turn comments over to that page exclusively, but for now while we're still establishing it as its own presence, we're duplicating the audio and allowing people to choose where they'd like to post their messages. :)

Posting from the land of the Eucalyptus Tree - I can tell you that a bushfire in our Native Gum forests is the most frightening experience.  We are said to be the most fire prone country and there have been considerable loss of life, property, livestock and native animals over the years.  This year promises to be a high fire risk year again with little rain and a hot dry summer forecast.  Even now in our Spring season they have started their TV coverage of what to do to prepare your property and yourselves to protect from bushfires.  People are being advised to clear the house surroundings, clear out roof gutters, and if needed to clear a firebreak around the perimeter of their property.  Local council workers will be out clearing alongside country roadsides and farmers and National Parks rangers will be clearing fire breaks through the bush.  With such high winds burning material can carry long distances to ignite new fires elsewhere. The biggest threat to people is from the thermal heat and the toxic smoke, as well as pollution of water supplies from soot and ash.  Another thing most people do not expect is the horrendous noise of a fire.

Eucalytus Oil is highly inflammable said to be on a par with petrol and in the intense heat of the fire the oil contained in the tree heats up and expands to such a degree that the tree literally explodes.  This causes the rifle shot noise or louder depending on the size of the tree.

I have been following the dreadful fires in California and have added all those affected to my prayers.  There will be many who suffer also who do not lose their homes, from unemployment and economic downturns caused by the damage and losses, as well as health problems from the smoke and soot.

A relative had to evacuate DelMar for two nights due to the risk of the eucalyptus trees....which at the time made no sense since they were sending people to the race tract...

Originally I was a Yankees fan... in fact the second date I ever went on with Red was at the beach and I had on my Yankee's cap... he looked at me and told me to take the stupid hat off... at some point where it wasn't too awful a comment... and I was all puzzled because he always liked me in a baseball cap...(wear them ALL the time) anyway... later I was kidding around with him and mentioned that to him....

he had to explain the whole rivarly thing to me... because I was at that time a passionate hardcore Atlanta Braves fan and just liked the Yankees...

For me the rivalry started back in 1977 when there was a bench clearing brawl.  But these teams always disliked eachother.

1976: In Martin’s second season, the Yankees unseat the Red Sox as American League champs, but also fall to the Reds in the World Series. Also Lou Pinellia and Carlton Fisk brawl when Pinellia slides in hard into Fisk. Bill Lee injures his shoulder when he tangles with Graig Nettles.

Craig Nettles was my favorite player. :)

I think tomorrow might be a better day.  Today the air was still full of smoke and ash, it was killing my eyes and nose.  Tonight seems to be a little better, can't smell the smoke in the air now....finally!

Here's a picture I took as the sun was setting over the ocean.  You can't tell in this picture but the sun was bright red, I don't know why it didn't come out in the photo.  The sky is still filled with smoke/haze from the fires and the fires weren't even near us.

Klaas ~ the photo you just posted makes me feel short of breath just looking at it.  I hope for blue skies soon for you and the other monkeys in Cali.  My DH and I cleared all the cedar trees from our front lot, and got a lot cleared  from the back side while he was home on vacation last winter, for fire safety.  And the cedar was choking out the live oaks and cedar elms and taking their water.  I removed a lot of shrubs that were up next to the house too.  We still have the area that goes down hill to the creek behind our house.  It's like a small canyon with a wet weather creek down there, and it's overgrown.  We get a lot of wind blowing through there, and I'm hoping if we clear the area and there is a fire, we might be spared.  I can't imagine what it would be like to have my house burn to the ground.  I am truly sorry to see house after house burned in the fires in California. :sad:

It was bad enough when the TV and lights inexplicably flicked on at night, Misty Conrad says. When her daughter began talking to an unseen girl named Nicole and neighbors said children had been murdered in the house, it was time to move.

Put Conrad, a homemaker from Hampton, Va., firmly in the camp of the 34 percent of people who say they believe in ghosts, according to a pre-Halloween poll by The Associated Press and Ipsos. That's the same proportion who believe in unidentified flying objects — exceeding the 19 percent who accept the existence of spells or witchcraft.

Forty-eight percent believe in extrasensory perception, or ESP. But nearly half of you knew we were about to tell you that, right?

Conrad, now 40, lived in Syracuse, Ind., when her family was scared from the house they rented.

"It kind of creeped you out," she recalled this week. "I needed to get us out."

To put the roughly one-third who believe in ghosts and UFOs in perspective, it's about the same as, in recent AP-Ipsos polls, the 36 percent who said they are baseball fans; the 37 percent who said the U.S. made the right decision to invade Iraq; and the 31 percent who approve of the job President Bush is doing.

A smaller but still substantial 23 percent say they have actually seen a ghost or believe they have been in one's presence, with the most likely candidates for such visits including single people, Catholics and those who never attend religious services. By 31 percent to 18 percent, more liberals than conservatives report seeing a specter.

Those who dismissed the existence of ghosts include Morris Swadener, 66, a Navy retiree from Kingston, Wash.

He says he shot one with his rifle when he was a child.

"I woke up in the middle of the night and saw a white ghost in my closet," he said. "I discovered I'd put a hole in my brand new white shirt. My mother and father were not amused."

Three in 10 have awakened sensing a strange presence in the room. For whatever it says about matrimony, singles are more likely than married people to say so.

Fourteen percent — mostly men and lower-income people — say they have seen a UFO. Among them is Danny Eskanos, 44, an attorney in Palm Harbor, Fla., who says as a Colorado teenager he watched a bright light dart across the sky, making abrupt stops and turns.

"I knew a little about airplanes and helicopters, and it was not that," he said. "It's one of those things that sticks in your mind."

Spells and witchcraft are more readily believed by urban dwellers, minorities and lower-earning people. Those who find credibility in ESP are more likely to be better educated and white — 51 percent of college graduates compared to 37 percent with a high school diploma or less, about the same proportion by which white believers outnumber minorities.

Overall, the 48 percent who accept ESP is less than the 66 percent who gave that answer to a similar 1996 Newsweek question.

One in five say they are at least somewhat superstitious, with young men, minorities, and the less educated more likely to go out of their way to seek luck. Twenty-six percent of urban residents — twice the rate of those from rural areas — said they are superstitious, while single men were more superstitious than unmarried women, 31 percent to 17 percent.

The most admitted-to superstition, by 17 percent, was finding a four-leaf clover. Thirteen percent dread walking under a ladder or the groom seeing his bride before their wedding, while slightly smaller numbers named black cats, breaking mirrors, opening umbrellas indoors, Friday the 13th or the number 13.

Generally, women were more superstitious than men about four-leaf clovers, breaking mirrors or grooms prematurely seeing brides. Democrats were more superstitious than Republicans over opening umbrellas indoors, while liberals were more superstitious than conservatives over four-leaf clovers, grooms seeing brides and umbrellas.

Then there's Jack Van Geldern, a computer programmer from Riverside, Conn. Now 51, Van Geldern is among the five percent who say they have seen a monster in the closet — or in his case, a monster's face he spotted on the wall of his room as a child.

"It was so terrifying I couldn't move," he said. "Needless to say I survived the event and never saw it again."

The poll, conducted Oct. 16-18, involved telephone interviews with 1,013 adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

No question I believe in UFO's..Presidents,Astronauts,Pilots and thousands of credible people have all seen them. Lots of evidence on youtube  :wink:

I also don't believe in many psychic. They are fake and I don't believe them. And btw, some people want studying para-psychic and try to become a psychic. Hahahah too funny. That stupid psychologists, cursist of para-psychic and all around that psychologists workers don't know that you become born with a psychic gift and not that you get it in one day in your life. And really psychics been another people, and amazing when they talk to you.

Good Morning, Monkeys! Raining a little here today and expecting a wet weekend. Wish we could send some of it out to Anna and California where they really need it.

Watching CNN last night, they said the air is really bad in CA, so all our Californian Monkeys please take care. Still hoping for good news from Shell. Seems a lot of the infrastructure is down in the fire areas and it may be a while until we hear from her. The folks whose houses did survive the fires may not be able return home for weeks until all the utilities are fixed. What a disaster. :sad:

My niece couldn't get over how everyone here decorates for Halloween,especially our little town as we have a State Park that does Fall Festivals. Her friend went absolutely over the deep end at Cedar Point last weekend in the haunted walk and we had to have a police offecer escort her out :shock: I guess she had a bad experience at Universal Studios in CA.I was waiting until after the Tribe got knocked out of the playoffs,but decided after all this that I'm just too cute the way I am! Sadly, we do not have any of the original databases from that time period. When Tom left and I came in, Tom gave us the data from the first month of messages, but there was nothing beyond that anywhere to be found. I don't know the whole story as to why Tom didn't have all the data backed up, but for whatever reason those messages do not exist in a format that can be brought into the board the way that the first month's messages have been.

I have been told, however, that a long-time Scared Monkeys forumer has some if not all of that data in a different format that we may be able to place online in one form or another. It's an uphill climb, but we do intend on looking into it. We have to first obtain data for the exact date ranges we're missing, and then I'll have to dig thru it to see how it's laid out and if it can be made accessible or searchable in some way. Red and I are meeting this weekend so I'll see if we can get that ball rolling again.

MumInOhio, thanks for that bit of information. We have been using several new tools to try to more efficiently catalog all of the Monkeys sites content at Google. Those things take time, but it's great to hear a report like yours that it appears to be working!

Woman charged in 'Internet Revenge' caseFri Oct 26, 4:16 PM ET



A 34-year-old woman has been charged with using the Internet to try to get revenge on an old boyfriend by breaking up his marriage. Pilar Stofega has been charged with second-degree harassment and breach of peace and released on $2,500 bond.

Waterford police say she created phony profiles of the former boyfriend's current wife on some adult Web sites that included the wife's home and work phone numbers and high school yearbook picture.

Stofega said she did to it "to be vindictive, knowing that the profiles would create marital problems between" the victim and her husband, according to court documents.

The plot came to life when strange men started calling a Waterford woman's house over the summer, saying they had seen her profile on an adult Web site.

The man Stofega had dated eight years ago used his own computer to investigate and discovered someone had created a profile for his wife on several Internet sites, according to court records.

Police say the husband did more online investigating and was able to find out that the person behind the phony profiles of his wife was the woman he dated in 1999. He passed the information on to Waterford police, leading to Stofega's arrest last week.

Waterford police got a court order to seize Stofega's Internet records. They reviewed the account records before searching her house in late September.

Stofega was at the house when police served the warrant. Officers said she provided them with a sworn written statement in which she admitted to intentionally creating the profiles in the victim's likeness on the adult Web sites.

Stofega is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Monday. Court records did not list an attorney and her phone number was not listed.

Pets Remain Priority for Displaced Californians Fleeing Homes From Wildfires

DEL MAR, Calif. —

Troyann Chappell needed help this week when she evacuated from Spring Valley to flee the fires. Not only did she have to get her 92-year-old friend Adele MacAdam out, she also had to take with her 14 cats, two dogs, three rats, a cockatoo and a parakeet.

Hers was a plight facing many displaced Californians who couldn't bear leaving home without their pets. What they found were shelters willing to accommodate the animals along with the people.

"It was quite a variety," said Amy Maher, the board chairwoman of Noah's Wish, a pet charity that sent 30 personnel to Qualcomm Stadium Monday night. "People evacuated everything: chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, horses, llamas, goats. We had a lot of birds."

Noah's Wish, which has provided assistance for other natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, offered shelter for around 200 animals at the stadium and provided food, water and veterinary assistance for evacuees and their pets.


Maher said evacuees heeded the warning that if it's not safe for them, it's not safe for their pets.

"A lot of people took that to heart and got them out of there which is a really good thing," she said.

Veterinarian Dr. Richard Tramp took in about 40 horses and their owners at his horse breeding business, Exclusively Equine Reproduction in Valley Center, Calif.

"People had gone through it before and just knew it was time to move," Tramp said.

In San Diego County, the nation's most horse-populated county, moving the equines to safety was a priority.

Del Mar Fairgrounds, which doubles as a racetrack, stabled around 1,900 horses with many of the owners bunking in the jockey quarters.

"As of Monday afternoon, for the first time ever in history, we started taking human evacuations with their domestic pets – dogs, cats, all kinds of things," said Kina Paegert, a spokeswoman for the fairgrounds.

Though many had gone home by Friday, Paegert expected several hundred new equine evacuees from San Clemente in Orange County Saturday.

That's where Chappell bunked Friday night with her pets – including 7-week-old kittens she hopes to give up for adoption, her daughter and MacAdam. The group had traveled north from Qualcomm when it closed Friday.

At Del Mar, the humans lounged on cots next to the animals, which slept in cages donated by Noah's Wish.

"They're doing pretty good," Chappell said of her pets. "I'm sure they would like to be out. Every time I open the door to feed and water 'em they want to get out. I hold them and pet them and try to give each of them a few minutes."

They'll return, she said, once they get the all-clear

Orange trees do this too when they freeze.  The expanded fluids in the tree usually cause them to burst and it makes a very loud sound of cracking noise.. the wood splintering.

Americans Found Dead in Hong Kong Hotel May Have Taken Date Rape Drug

Two Americans found dead in a Hong Kong luxury hotel might have ingested the date rape drug Rohypnol, a newspaper reported Sunday, citing police.

The men — whom police identified by single names only, Paul and Richard aged 45 and 51 — were found dead in a room at the Grand Hyatt hotel on Friday afternoon.

The Sunday Morning Post, citing unnamed police sources, said the two men were found with white froth coming from their mouth.

The report said the case may have been an attempted robbery that went wrong involving the use of "date rape" drug flunitrazepam — a sedative sold as Rohypnol.

Police refused to confirm whether the two men were seen returning to the hotel with two women, saying "all options" were being considered, the paper reported.

Hong Kong police declined to confirm the report Sunday, saying more toxicology tests were needed.

"A post-mortem examination failed to find out the cause of their deaths, so more toxicology tests are being carried out," said a police spokeswoman who requested her name not be used due to policy.

The case was still classified as a "dead body found," she added.

In recent years, there has been a rash of cases reported to police in which men who went out in Hong Kong's lively nightlife district Wan Chai woke up the next morning apparently robbed — and with no recollection of what happened.

Rohypnol, commonly known as a date-rape drug, has sedative and hypnotic effects. People attacked, robbed or raped while under its influence can regain their senses with no memory of the assault.

Dale Kreschler, press officer for the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong, said he could not comment on the case due to privacy concerns.

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - Call it the Misadventure of Captain Underpants and the Peeved Principal.

A suburban Long Island high school has banned all Halloween costumes after three senior girls showed up last year dressed as the underwear-baring subject of a series of best-selling children's books.

Long Beach High School Principal Nicholas Restivo, who sent the three seniors home to change last year, said the episode solidified his sense that the school's costume tradition was disruptive.

For the Captain Underpants costumes, the three girls donned beige leotards and nude stockings under white briefs and red capes to portray the superhero, who has battled such foes as talking toilets. To Restivo, the appearance was that the girls were naked.

"I'm being a principal. I'm not being an ogre," Restivo said.

He added that some gory costumes could make some students uncomfortable.

Some students don't see it that way. They are circulating a petition opposing the costume crackdown.

"It's one thing if the school won't let us wear outfits that are revealing or inappropriate, but if it is an innocent Halloween costume, we should be allowed to wear it," said junior Meghan Beck.

Deadly Fire Rips Through North Carolina Beach House

 OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. —

Fire swept through a beach house believed occupied by college students early Sunday, killing an unknown number of people and sending several to a hospital, authorities said.

Investigators had not yet been inside the house by late morning.

"We do know there are some fatalities," Mayor Debbie Smith said. "We do not know how many."

"I understand there were some college kids in the house. Some got out. Some did not," the mayor said.

The fire was under control by late Sunday morning, the mayor said.

The four-alarm blaze had "totally engulfed" the house a little before 7 a.m., said Nick Cain, a student at the University of North Carolina who was staying at a house about 100 feet away.

"The house is standing, but it's totally gutted," Cain said. "We ran down the street to get away. The ash and the smoke were coming down on us. We were just trying to get away."

Cain said some of his friends had met several people staying at the house, and he said most appeared to be students from the University of South Carolina.

Six people from the fire were taken to Brunswick Community Hospital, said spokeswoman Amy Myers. She said five were treated and released and the sixth was in listed in fair condition.

Ocean Isle Beach is at the far southern end of North Carolina's Atlantic Coast, about 30 miles north of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Only about 500 people live there year-round, but the town is home to several thousand rental and vacation homes and condos.

Is It Bigfoot? Hunter's Photos Ignite Debate

It's furry and walks on all fours.

Beyond that, about the only thing certain about the critter photographed by a hunter's camera is that some people have gotten the notion it could be a Sasquatch, or bigfoot. Others say it's just a bear with a bad skin infection.

Rick Jacobs says he got the pictures from a camera with an automatic trigger that he fastened to a tree in the Allegheny National Forest, about 115 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, hoping to photograph deer.

"We couldn't figure out what they were," Jacobs said of the images captured on Sept. 16. "I've been hunting for years and I've never seen anything like this."

He contacted the Bigfoot Research Organization, which pursues reports of a legendary two-legged creature that some people believe lives in parts of the U.S. and Canada.

"It appears to be a primate-like animal. In my opinion, it appears to be a juvenile Sasquatch," said Paul Majeta of the bigfoot group.

However, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has a more conventional opinion. Agency spokesman Jerry Feaser said conservation officers routinely trap bears to be tagged and often see animals that look like the photos.

"There is no question it is a bear with a severe case of mange," Feaser told The Bradford Era.

 I wasn't happy about that. It was pathetic and so pityful looking. He got the thing mounted too. Long story short.. he had it hanging on our living room   :2doh:  :roll: :2doh: :wink:  Head/shoulder mount.  I could NOT sit under the thing.. it was above the couch here. I sneezed and sneezed me ass off.  My parents were over one day.. my mother was sitting under it.. and she started sneezing.. So. I told hubby he HAD to get it the heck out of here.. Cause I swear I and my mom was allergic to the thing. He took it to camp.. :)  He has a nice whitetail buck mount here.. and it dnot bother me. JUST that albino. And Guess what,. you know that old tale of anyone shooting an albino deer being bad luck.. and you won't ever get a deer during hunting season again? Well, he hasn't.  LOL   GOOD for him.. I tell him that too.  :cool: He used to get nice sized trophy bucks every year since he started hunting as a teen.  NOW.. the last 3 yrs.. NUTTIN!   :lol:

It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mom and you. I have been finding real passion with Stacy and she is so nice. But I knew you would not approve of her because of all her piercing, tattoos, tight motorcycle clothes and the fact that she is much older than I am. But it's not only the passion...Dad she's pregnant.


Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it ourselves and trading it with the other people that live nearby for cocaine and ecstasy. Ok here.. work been busy.. had a tradgedy occur a few days ago.. :(  and sighhhh.. I got wrecked into last evening on my way home.  Rear~ended by a young kid. He left a nice set of rubber on the road. After what I have went thru the last few days with a death of a friend.. I didn't even get upset after being hit. This poor kid was crying.. he said my mom and dad are gonna kill me.  He had just go the car few days prior.. Mitzabishi Eclipse..  <sp?>   Came to find out after talking to him .. he knows my son and step son. All I could do was hug the kid and tell him, nobody was hurt.. cars can be repaired .. but a loss of life can't.   He apologized 10 times I swear.  Gotta take my car tomorrow for an estimate.  :2doh:

TEXAS CHILI COOK OFF

If you can read this whole story without laughing, then there's no hope for you. I was crying by the end.

This is an actual account as relayed to paramedics at a chili cook-off in Texas.


 
Note: Please take time to read this slowly. If you pay attention to the first two judges, the reaction

of the third judge is even better. For those of you who have lived in Texas, you know how true this is.

They actually have a Chili Cook-off about the time Halloween comes around. It takes up a major portion

of a parking lot at the San Antonio City Park.


 
Judge #3 was an inexperienced Chili taster named Frank, who was visiting from Springfield, IL.


Frank: "Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a chili cook-off. The original person

called in sick at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge's table, asking for

directions to the Coors Light truck, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges

(Native Texans) that the chili wouldn't be all that spicy; and, besides, they told me I could have free

beer during the tasting, so I accepted and became Judge 3."

CHILI # 1 - MIKE'S MANIAC MONSTER CHILI  

Judge # 1 -- A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick.

Judge # 2 -- Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild.

Judge # 3 (Frank) -- Holy crap, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that's the worst one. These Texans are crazy.


 
CHILI # 2 - AUSTIN 'S AFTERBURNER CHILI

  Judge # 1 -- Smoky, with a hint of pork. Slight jalapeno tang.

Judge # 2 -- Exciting BBQ flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously.

Judge # 3 -- Keep this out of the reach of children. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face.


 
CHILI # 3 - FRED'S FAMOUS BURN DOWN THE BARN CHILI  

Judge # 1 -- Excellent firehouse chili. Great kick.

Judge # 2 -- A bit salty, good use of peppers.

Judge # 3 -- Call the EPA. I've located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Barmaid pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I'm getting shit-faced from all of the beer.


 
CHILI # 4 - BUBBA'S BLACK MAGIC

Judge # 1 -- Black bean chili with almost no spice. Disappointing.

Judge # 2 -- Hint of lime in the black beans. Good side dish for fish or other mild foods, not much of a chili.

Judge # 3 -- I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Sally, the beer maid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. This 300 lb. woman is starting to look HOT just like this nuclear waste I'm eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac?


 
CHILI # 5 -  LISA'S LEGAL LIP REMOVER  

Judge # 1 -- Meaty, strong chili. Cayenne peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive.

Judge # 2 -- Chili using shredded beef, could use more tomato. Must admit the cayenne peppers make a strong statement.

Judge # 3 -- My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted, and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her chili had given me brain damage. Sally saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I'm burning my lips off. It really ticks me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw them.


 
CHILI # 6 - VERA'S VERY VEGETARIAN VARIETY  

Judge # 1 -- Thin yet bold vegetarian variety chili. Good balance of spices and peppers.

Judge # 2 -- The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, garlic. Superb.

Judge # 3 -- My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I crapped on myself when I farted, and I'm worried it  will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that Sally. Can't feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone.


 
CHILI # 7 - SUSAN'S SCREAMING SENSATION CHILI  

Judge # 1 -- A mediocre chili with too much reliance on canned peppers.

Judge # 2 -- Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of chili peppers at the last moment.

**I should take note that I am worried about Judge #3. He appears to be a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably.

Judge # 3 -- You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I  wouldn't feel a thing. I've lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with chili, which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My
pants are full of lava to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy, they'll know what killed me.

I've decided to stop breathing it's too painful.

Screw it; I'm not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I'll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach.


 
CHILI # 8 - BIG TOM'S TOENAIL CURLING CHILI  

Judge # 1 -- The perfect ending, this is a nice blend chili. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence.

Judge # 2 -- This final entry is a good, balanced chili. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge #3 farted, passed out, fell over and pulled the chili pot down on top of himself. Not sure if he's going to make it. Poor feller, wonder how he'd have reacted to really hot chili?

Judge # 3 - No Report

Not sure if you have time to do this, but if you do I have made some lists which I can email to you. Toddler who survived B.C. plane crash wouldn't leave wreckage without teddy bear

GOLDEN, B.C. - Rescuers who helped find a three-year-old girl alive in the crumpled wreckage of an airplane in the rugged British Columbia mountains say they knew she was OK when she cried for her teddy bear.

The girl, Kate Williams, miraculously survived the crash on Sunday because she was strapped into a child's car seat, said Mike Plonka, a member of Golden's search-and-rescue team.

Her pilot grandfather, Allen D. Williams, 65, and Steven T. Sutton, died in the accident. The plane was found nose down and flipped over in the icy water on the edge of a riverbank.

"What saved her life was being strapped into that car seat," Plonka said Monday.

"You could see that she was very scared. Her big concern at the time was her little teddy bear. She didn't want to leave without it.

"She was just pointing at it and calling it 'Baby."'

The girl, who suffered head injuries but was listed as stable, was reunited with her parents, said hospital officials in the southeastern B.C. community of Golden. The family was to be flown to the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary.

Sleeping Man Dressed as Zombie Mistaken for Corpse on Train in Germany

A drunken Halloween reveller in Germany found his costume was a little too realistic when he fell asleep on a train and was mistaken for a corpse.

Fellow passengers thought the man, who was dressed as a gore-covered zombie, had been murdered and called the police.

Police in the northern town of Bad Segeberg revealed how the 24-year-old had fallen into a drunken slumber on his way home from a Halloween party in Hamburg.

Believing his hands and face were smeared with blood, passengers alerted officers after getting no response from him.

A first aid team which was called to the scene soon cleared up the confusion, however.

Police told the man to remove his make-up, after which he was allowed to continue his journey.

Police spokeswoman Sikle Tobies said: "Bad Segeberg is in a rural area, and Halloween isn't very well known there.

"So people weren't expecting anyone to be dressed up in the train."

DA Asked to Decide Whether to Prosecute Boy Who Allegedly Started L.A. Wildfires

SANTA CLARITA, Calif.  —  A prosecutor will be asked to consider the case of a boy accused of starting a massive wildfire by playing with matches.

Fueled by ferocious desert winds, the fire quickly spread, burning more than 38,000 acres and destroying 21 homes.

The boy, whose name and age were not released, admitted to sparking the fire on Oct. 21, Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht said Tuesday.

"He admitted to playing with matches and accidentally starting the fire," she said in a statement.

The boy was released to his parents, and the case will be presented to the district attorney's office, Hecht said. It was not clear if he had been arrested or cited by detectives.

The fire began in an area near Agua Dulce and quickly spread. It was among 15 or so major wildfires that killed 14 people, destroyed some 2,100 homes and blackened 809 square miles from Los Angeles to the Mexican border last week.

Authorities arrested five people for arson during that period, but none have been linked to any of the major blazes.

The boy, whose name and age were not released, admitted to sparking the fire on Oct. 21, Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Diane Hecht said Tuesday. Ferocious winds helped it quickly spread.

"He admitted to playing with matches and accidentally starting the fire," Hecht said in a statement.

The boy was released to his parents, and the case will be presented to the district attorney's office, Hecht said. It was not clear if he had been arrested or cited by detectives.

The fire began in an area near Agua Dulce and quickly spread. It was among 15 or so major wildfires that killed 14 people, destroyed some 2,100 homes and blackened 809 square miles from Los Angeles to the Mexican border last week.

Authorities arrested five people for arson during that period, but none have been linked to any of the major blazes.

This arson thing with a boy really disturbs me. I'll relay to you a tragic, true story that may be more likely in a small Tennessee County, but I think is plausible throughout our Jail systems:

Before John became a Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Specialist, he was the Nurse for a County Jail. There was a section for sex offenders, which is common both for their own safety and the protection of other inmates.

There had been a rash of barn and outbuilding fires within the rural parts of the County. Authorities caught a teenager watching a barn burn while masturbating, and arrested him. He admitted to setting the fire. They placed him in the sex offender tank because he said the reason he did it was because somehow setting a fire and watching it burn, aroused him.

John found the small, scrawny teen shrinking in the corner within 24 hours of his incarceration and knew he was being raped. John went to the Sheriff and told him that the boy wouldn't survive unless he was moved. The Sheriff said that if the teen would tell who was abusing him, he would see he got moved.

The boy was too terrified to snitch, and despite John's continued insistence and finally finding the boy under a cot unable or unwilling to speak, the Sheriff stuck to his conditions. The teen lasted 10 days before he died.

This was over 20 years ago, and I know John well enough that today he would have called a press conference, gone to the newspaper, done something outside of the system. At the time, he was at his first job and fresh out of college himself. It haunts him. He left the jail shortly after the incident, got a job at the hospital and went back to school to become a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist/Family Nurse Practitioner. He's done nothing but Psych Services since.

My Nightmare as kid

When I was about 5 or 6 I was sharing a bedroom with my big brother that looked over our neighborhood from the third story. It was a typical October night but was very foggy and everything seemed to be in slow motion...Something woke me up and I decided to look out the window..I noticed a group of scary looking men walking together about 50 yards away but one of them really stood out and I couldn't keep my eyes off of him..He was tall,dark hair and looked alot like a vampire..I was totally scared so I was peaking out the side of the window behind the curtain so no one would see me. I figured no way could anyone see me as it was completely dark and only part of my head was looking through the very corner of the window..

I thought wrong..When I looked out again he slowly looked up and smiled at me..My hair stood up on the the back of my neck so I ran to my bed. How could he see me from 50 yards away and in total darkness I thought??  I didn't hear or see anything after a few minutes so I decided to see what those men were doing outside in my neighborhood...When I looked out the curtains again his face was 3 inches from mine smiling with his fangs showing as he crouched on my roof in the very corner of the window I was peaking through. Terrified I ran back to my bed and hid under the covers for a few minutes..Again I hear nothing..I slowly peak out and he is standing over my brother smiling with blood dripping from his teeth..I run like heck only to be stopped by seeing one of the men grabbing and shaking my mom and hearing her scream..

Luckily I woke up..But it was a Nightmare I will never forget  :lol:

For those who love a creepy story:

One of the scariest things that ever happened to me happened one night as I was in bed reading getting ready for sleep.  Back then I bred Scotties and Westies and would keep a baby monitor in each of the rooms when there were puppies.  It was so sensitive that I could hear the clocks ticking on the walls.  I kept the monitors on the nightstand beside my bed so I would be sure to hear any puppies crying, etc.

So I am there calmly reading nicely when I hear someone, male, clear their throat over one of the monitors.  Ahem.  This if followed by a soft coughing.  The dilemma, one I had not thought of before is that I don't know which monitor it came from so don't know which room it is coming from.

This matters, too, as the Scottie quarters is free standing and cannot be accessed by the rest of the house.  The Westie room can be.  That means the reverse is possible and anyone in that room could access the rest of the house.

I sat there in terror for a few minutes then finally got up my nerve and peeked in the Westie room.  No one there so at least I knew there was on one in the house with me.  Next morning I went to the Scottie house, very fearful of finding somebody still there but no one.  And the Scotties wouldn't tell either.

I never did find out who this was but tried to tell myself one of the close by neighbors must have a same brand of baby monitor.  I have almost bought this by now, too.  Almost but not quite.

I was going to end it with it's a dream I have had every year since I was 5 and the only way to lift the curse was to tell it to the internet. The curse would be lifted and the man would haunt those that read the story..lol..Well its the first time I told it to anyone so maybee next year I can write it better  :lol:

My scary Halloween story doesn't exactly involve Halloween but instead a house we looked at when we were looking for houses... it was owned by a "practicing witch"... every room in the house made me and the ppl with us think... they have sacrificed and killed ppl here... and we all thought it in the same room and no one was talking...

they had a basement floor that was dirt, and before you entered the basement a chart of human anatomy that included everything right down to the veins .... needless to say, we by passed that house... I am not giving all the details, but I ran screaming out of that house... LOL....

It's probably the prettiest one, CBB!  Thanks for thinking of me.  Busy time with trying to talk my mother into selling her house and living with me and my sisters, taking turns.  She doesn't want to.  And it seems she finally realizes that she will not be paid back the money she thought she loaned.  So she is depressed and we are working hard to cheer her up.

This man does this extravganza every year. The kids in the neighbourhood make a note to go there. He breaks it down every night and puts it all back in the garage and then puts it back the next night. I checked out a skeleton he had sitting in a chair, and the thing was real, must have bought it at a medical school garage sale or something like that. We had fun. Anna, May be to late but You kept talking about your bamboo problem. That could be a good cash crop. I was reading a sale paper today and it was showing some towels on sale. They had 7 different styles on sale. The most expensive was " Lenox Platinum towels." The write up said A comforting blend of low - twist cotton and bamboo for an extremely soft and absorbent towel.

The write up for another one said -Natural bamboo fibers provide the perfect material-it's super soft, durable and has antibacterial properties.

I also remembered they are using bamboo for flooring. Just a thought you may want to check it out.

It's almost this bad here.  Sometimes my water has a sort of chug-chug sound it never used to have before this drought.  This afternoon, I turned on the water and nothing happened except a trickle for a bit.  Then the water came on with that chugging sound/motion.

With 4 horses and about a dozen dogs, I don't think I could get by with three hours a day of water.

Ok, I just posted this in the lounge, but figured I would find more Monkeys here right now, so will post it here too.

I am in the market to purchase a new laptop and have been doing alot of research and checking prices, features etc.   I've noticed one that I am not very familiar with, showing up everywhere and wanted to know if anybody has any background on it.  It's Acer, which looks like they've merged with Gateway recently.
I have always been an HP person myself and did have a Gateway laptop awhile back, which I liked.  But Acer seems to fall into the cheapest category for what I am looking for, but do not want to sacrifice quality and support either.

So my question is for those who've had one and tech. savvy people for your input and advice, before I purchase anything.   I'm dying for one asap., so hoping I get some responses soon, before I just go out and purchase one for not holding myself back!  (little patience here) :)

Yes, Acer will be on sale at Walmart tomorrow for $348.  Looks like a pretty good deal to me.  I would want to make sure that the memory can be expanded though, right now it's 1gb and I'd prefer seeing 2gb.

LOL! You know be better than you should!  Since being off work, the biggest enjoyment is sleeping in, so the odds are pretty slim, me getting up that early.  I'm not even sure that's the model I was looking at.  The one I was interested in was $689, so don't think they have a price drop THAT big!  May hold off for a few. I wish it showed the model on that special, so I'd know, but it doesn't and I'm doubtful.  The one I was looking at was REALLY decked out with many awesome features.  I may sleep in tomorrow and wait for more Christmas specials.  8a.m. is a little early for somebody who has been off work for 5 mos.  That would be very painful.  :wink:

They are gone now.. our garbage is picked up early Friday mornings. The ones I had bought were the small ones that cost only 99 cents. My son eats those once in awhile in the middle of the night. he hadn't lately.  I had 6 of them.. and tossed them all.
Told him last night about the recall.

Our house is small with limited closet/storage space.  Every fall & spring, I have to shift clothing from foot locker-like containers to the bedroom, weeding out things for goodwill, etc.  Well, that's what I've been working on....and I hate it!!!  Winter things, like sweaters, take up so much room.  I have to push myself to get it done, every year, twice a year. 

Not sure if anyone else goes through this, but it just doesn't get better. :gaah: :smt022 :2boohoo:

Guess I'll get back to work. :sad:

Maggie, with this small house & 32 years living here, we have accumulated a lot of stuff and I have things packed in boxes in the garage and on shelves that probably could go.  I have a lot of time to do a little each day, but have more days like yours where I look at it and don't have the ambition (computer is a magnet  :roll:  :lol:).  It seems that when you start something, it looks worse before it looks better, sorting through the items you forgot you even had.  Have you ever watched 'Clean Sweep'?  Now, that's an eye opener.

I'm still not done putting the sweaters away.  Getting there.... Closet is another story & another day...(I'd love to have a big walk-in closet like most have...a room for clothing...)

That thought crossed my mind.....DH said last night 'everything's got e-coli!!'....makes you wonder..

I've seen Clean House and it makes me feel better. Many look worse than mine. We've been here 22 years, and with 4 kids, I was gone all of the time-ice skating, hockey, other activities. My motto was "Anything to avoid housework". But I am paying now-everyone's gone, and when they do come home, it's not to help get their stuff removed from here and sent on its way to their homes! It's vacation time! Let's watch tv. So I sit down with them and enjoy their company.
Maybe this Christmas will be different!. I think I need more than hope, though.

Yep - it was a one day only special.  I needed a backup computer in case this one dies and my old laptop just won't cut it.  Plus I wanted to learn a bit about Vista.  I think it came up to $382 with tax.  Still a good deal.  The salesgal told me they had 30 at 8am and by 10pm, when I went, mine was the only one left.  :wink:

My 4 are the ultimate pack rats. The oldest is the worst. I keep hearing "Don't get rid of that Mom, I want MY children to wear it...play with it...use it, etc."
Maybe I will have them all tell me about their workouts at the gym (all signed up for time and equipment AND PAID MONEY FOR THE MEMBERSHIP). They do whatever for a couple of hours a day, sweat, smell, go home and take a shower.

I think I will invite them all to my Christmas spa!

Are you accessing the internet from AOL?  I hate AOL for all the updates they do.  I have it for emergencies if my cable goes out but actually hate it cause it's so slow.  Of course dialup is slow compared to cable but AOL itself seems slower to me due to the constant updates.  Especially when you don't often log on.

 AOL sucks.. I agree there. I am on IE here at SM..  I read other sites thru AOL// I usually have IE and AOL both up at the same time. I have AOL broadband now.. but long ago. I recall Red and Tom talking me into posting on SM thru my Verizon DSL. that was before VISTA.. when I still had  Windows XP.  WHICH,. I admit.. I miss alot.   If you figure out Vista.. let me know and Mere. I think Mere and I are the only 2 on SM that deals with it.. LOL

It wouldn't have the memory I would want for my primary PC but for the price it's fine for a backup.  So far no problems with Vista but I haven't done alot on it yet either.  The wireless works great and it seems very fast and responsive.

Hi Everybody.  Has anyone heard from Ibe?  She hasn't posted since Oct. 24th.  I'm worried about her.

I got an email from her on the 28th.  She's OK just taking a break from it all for a while.  She mentioned she had a Halloween party to go to on the 29th that she was looking forward to.  I'll send her a note and check up on her. :wink:

OK, I decided to see if I could get Dana's show on the laptop.  I had not installed any media players.

I clicked on the link it as it tried to open it made me install Windows Media Player.  Dana Pretzer show opened right up then....no problems at all!

Lala's - I think CBB is going to make some fixes to it so check back with her later.  She said she had to run out for a bit.

Anna - thanks, I just saw it too.  Just posted in the recall area.  Every day it seems another one!

Well, there's some lunchbags in New York that were part of a federal program also recalled this morning.  With the pet food recalls, I learned to keep an eye out on the weekends as that seems to be when people 'fess up most.

The lunchbags, if federal, are probably all over the country.  Something about more healthful eating habits in children.  Except for the LEAD, of course, in the vinyl lining of the bags made in CHINA.

So giving a kid an apple in a bag with lead in it is not my idea of more healthful eating.

I tell you, this is where that autism increase is coming from!  You can't expose little kids to lead.  Adults it doesn't effect nearly as much but very bad for children and I would assume that includes during pregnancy.

Next the Chinese will be sending us their radioactive waste from their nuclear projects disguised as teething rings or something.

Somebody's asleep at the switch for sure!

My rant for the morning!

Off to shop, haha!  And wonder what toxic substances I am bringing into my home.
