Sue - FYI, you can actually resize your photos in photobucket.  If you go to EDIT, then RESIZE and make them 640 x 480 they will fit the page better.   Don't make them any smaller than 320 x 240 though or they will be too small.

Not that you have to resize them, I just thought I'd let you know.

Title: Re: My Trip To Kuwait
Post by: Sue on November 15, 2007, 01:53:09 AM
Well everytime I post something and take the time to write everything out
The internet kicks out and I lose everything I typed,So Im gonna try this typing
Into word and copy and paste so it is faster..
With the few picture I posted there are taken in Mahboula, Kuwait.
That is where my daughter lives and most of the american that live here.
As you can see there is a lot of construction going on as they are building up this area
A great deal. Here are a few things I have learned and some strange ones also
I can take pictures of anything, But I can not directly take any pictures of the woman
Or there children. You do not approach woman here and talk to them . I havent been out much
Yet but the woman I have seen all wear Burka’s and cover up I have seen a few without but not
Many..I am sure I will get some pics of woman but I will not disrespect them and point a camera
At them. Now this morning 5 am I heard all this loud arabic talking , I was like what the hell
My daughter boyfriend took me to the balcony and pointed to this make shift building /shed
Thingee and said it was a make shift mosque for the workers and stuff and all the racket I heard
Was him calling out for prayer.. rather rude at 5 am but what the hell.. Next time I am up at 5 am
I will record this with my camera and post it.. I guess there is another one coming at Noon for prayer
Again.. I am 8 floors above he wont know im recording.. I thought it was quite nice my daughters
upstairs neighbor knocked on the door she is a kuwait police officer and although my daughter has
lived in this building since February this lady has never spoke to her.. well she was asking us
If we minded that they are having BIG party and there will be live music and wanted to know if it was
ok , her english was poor but I thought she didn’t really well I understood exaclty what she was saying
My daughter on the other hand was like HUH??? She was quite friendly and asked us for coffee and
invited us to this big party.. I want to go I am eager to see and learn there culture.
If I go I will make sure I tell you all about it .. My sleep schedule is so screwed up I don’t know
Whether I am coming or going..I arrived here Wednesday morning 7 am took me 24 hours of travel to
get here, I stayed up a few hours and crashed hard not waking until my daughter got home 7 pm last
night , well I have been up ever since it is 9:30 am Thursday morning almost time for a nap I think.
My daughter has a very demanding job and cant really take extra days off which I understand
This is a vacation for me and anyone that knows me personally know I don’t leave my job often
So I am just glad to be away, She will be off Saturday and we will go raise hell here and I will get lot
More pictures..This is just such a great expierence I am just happy to be here with my daughter
Well I will write more later and if the damn internet will allow I will post pictures also

Ps funny when you look at Monkey home page all the ads mine are all in arabic

Great pictures Sue!

It all appears to be housing, and most of what i have seen is tall.. it does appear that lower
floors are business like that building directly in front it is Starbucks and Cinnabon and there is a
Ruby Tuesdays across from that

How fascinating!  I would love to go to that party and learn a new culture too!   How nice of the neighbor to ask!

It's nice scenery, and so close to the beach.  I bet that would be interesting, just to walk up and down the beach.

ROFL, when you got woke up at 5am prayer time!  I couldn't help but crack up.  That would get sooo annoying!  Well luckily you are around the American part and have some Western restauants/coffeeshops to hit up!   But make sure you hit any markets and try new things too.  Try to take advantage of the new temporary life, enjoy and learn!

Thanks so much for sharing this exciting trip.  I wish I was there! ;)

I noticed in the photos you posted I didn't see any people?  Is that because it's all new construction or is it an area people just don't walk around in much?

there is NO naturla surrounding like you would see like at the San diago Zoo, there is NO water filtration system
in any of the water pools for ducks, hippo, water feeders nothing apparently they had a big break out of bird flu
at the zoo and lost many birds, LIke the goat pens there was way to many of them for the small pens so it stunk to high heavens.. I soon as I run updates on Pc I will uplaod the pics I took and post them.. but there pens are dry and barron
very few plants it is very hot they do have indoor areas for them. at one point the kid were beating on side door had these little coyotes just pacing frantically and one girl was flicking her water bottle full of water at the dingos'
the kids were feeding the monkeys and stuff junk food throwing stuff at them.. they throw empty plastic bottles, pop cans and other crap in the cages here there pop can have the full pull off tabs like the old days I was seeing the tabs inside cages it was very sad the animals dont even look happy at all we left there depressed

I will post when I get home.. sheeesh at lunch time they do the calling there was like 50 men bowing on carpets in parking lots

I see you have experienced prayer call and prayers.  Prayers five times a day.  I was in the middle east in a more conservative country than Kuwait.  The stores, restaurants and etc. also closed for prayer.  Shopping and eating out took some planning, because they threw us out of the restaurant or store until prayer was over.

Wow, Sue, I somehow missed this the last couple of days, but I did remember you were traveling to Kuwait.

I must say that I experienced the prayer chanting (if that is the right term) when my SIL & I visited Morocco on a church sponsored trip back in early 2001.  We, too, were cautious about the cultural differences.  We only were allowed outside a mosque we visited on a tour.

Anyway, we did ride a camel out in the desert area, through little villages.  I just spent some time trying to find the pictures of us on them, but they are not in my photobucket and not on this PC.  If you do, just be prepared for the shift when the camel gets up, once you get on....hind legs go up first and when that happens you lunge forward a bit...one of my pics was of me when that happened...

Glad you are spending time with your daughter & 'grandson'...and thanks for sharing the pics, etc.

but when you have expierenced it ,it sure comes as a shock when you sitting there and it blast out on a loud speaker

Wow Morroco that would be cool, i will soon be learning about Morroco as at home about do alot of work with sister cities international and my city Tacoma just became sister cities with Morroco so im excited to learn alittle about there country
I met a guy yesterday when i went for walk he told me camel riding is further out in the desert.. so If i want to do that i have to track them down as it isnt really a business but poeple that live in the desert and own many camels..

Hi Muffy,
yes this has been a wonderful opportunity for me, With my daughter living here why not take advantage of her being
here to travel to middle east.. I plan on posting lots more pictures, I am just having trouble on this computer
damn VISTA anyways this computer gets more errors then the suspect lies.. There is so many things i wanted to take pictures
of but wasnt allowed to , like when I was on the military air base where my daughter works. But would have loved to take pics there.. My days are getting numbered here and honestly i get real choked up when I think of leaving my daughter
again.. She will be home for christmas but for only 4 days then god knows when I will see her. i would imagine a year.. I will come back out here as she plans on staying atleast 3 years here.. I leave 28th here will return home 17 hour flight same day
as I will time travel back into time.. after I get situated i will post many more pictures.. quite honestly there isnt much to see
alot of construction and sand  LMFAO
Hopefully while in flight this case will bust loose and the perps will go down, I will not be happy if they release them again
well I will be intouch

Sue

Sue ~  I look forward to seeing your photos when you are ready to post.  I can tell you will miss your daughter when you leave, because you are missing her already and haven't  even left.   .  I hope you two can email regularly.  Also, you might want to look into a long distance company such as Vonage.  When my family and I lived in Saudi, I brought Vonage with me.  I got an area code that was in Texas, where most of my family lived.  They could call me free, as much as they wanted if their area code was the same as the one I had chosen.  For others outside the area code I had chosen, it was like making a long distance call elsewhere in the U.S.  My cost was $35.00 a month.    Just some ideas, so you can stay in contact with your daughter.  Being able to talk is wonderful.  Not quite like being there, but was nice.  I hope you continue to enjoy your visit and I look forward to hearing about your adventures and what you are seeing and experiencing.

Ok Monkeys, I made it safe and sound from my trip to Kuwait
with late flights and crap i ended up flighing 17 hours

But first thing I want to share, is the thing I bitched about in the beginning of my trip, I tried so hard to upload this while i was there
but between Vista's errors and crappy internet was unable to..
First off seems everywhere you look there is a Mosque your not suppose to take pictures, But I snapped a few ( come get me Kuwaitee cops) I will go back ...  But here is my favorite so to speak.. Where I was staying in Mahaboula there is just mass construction, ON each side of where my daughter lives there are huge condo/apartments being built, so there are workers everywhere.. Right below my daughters balcony there is a make shift Mosque and they do what is called " The Calling Of Prayer"
5 damn times a day BUT>>>> BUT it starts at like 4:30 am to 5:00 am in the morning is the first call.. WELL GOOD MORNING TO ME  that is how I woke up every single morning that I stayed there
Here is a sample

(http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h82/BigMouse1925/th_MyKuwaitTrip225.jpg) (http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h82/BigMouse1925/?action=view&current=MyKuwaitTrip225.flv)

anyone of you Monkeys that have been to the middle east will totally relate to this... Ps I had to watch and listen this morning
what a reality check I am home

OK we will recap this segment, As I spoke about in prior thread
a few pages back "MY GOD THEY DRIVE NUTS"
They have fender benders, you see it in cars everywhere there
But they have major wrecks daily I saw minimum of 25 wrecks
here again is the statistics

Overall facts and figures
The rate of traffic accidents in Kuwait is four times more than in most industrial countries.
The total number of dead during the past 10 years has reached 3,000.
Kuwait ranks third in the number of deaths caused due to road accidents

2003 Statistics
45,376 accidents took place
An average of 124 accidents per day
372 people killed

2004 Statistics
55,000 traffic accidents took place
An average of 150 accidents per day
400 people killed

2005 Statistics
57,000 traffic accidents were reported
An average of 156 accidents per day
455 people killed

2006 Statistics
There were 44 road fatalities in January of 2006
There were 39 road fatalities in May of 2006
There were 29 road fatalities in June of 2006
273 persons died in road accidents over the period Jan 2006 - September 2006
Source - Kuwait Society for Traffic Safety (KSTs)

Source - Kuwait General Traffic Department

Here is just a few examples of what I saw, they leave the cars on sidewalks, side of road and in sandlots for a week or more before they remove them

#1  this car was left right on a sidewalk
(http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h82/BigMouse1925/MyKuwaitTrip058.jpg)

These next two are seperate wrecks, I went to Kuwait towers twice and they added a car between visits
(http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h82/BigMouse1925/MyKuwaitTrip137.jpg)(http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h82/BigMouse1925/MyKuwaitTrip099.jpg)

This one here by looks I dont think they survived, it they did it is a miracle
(http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h82/BigMouse1925/MyKuwaitTrip098.jpg)

The Liberation Tower is the tallest structure in Kuwait. Construction of the tower commenced before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. It was meant to be called The Kuwait Telecommunications Tower.

When the invasion took place, construction, which was almost half-way complete, was put on hold. However, the structure received no damage, and construction resumed after Saddam's forces were expelled on February 27, 1991. Upon completion in 1993, the tower was renamed the Liberation Tower, symbolizing Kuwait's liberation from Iraq.

The tower contains a revolving restaurant and observation platform (in the first disc-shaped pod; now closed to the public for security reasons), and also houses radio and other telecommunications offices. The structure stands at 372 meters high (1,220 ft) at its pinnacle. The roof of the second pod on the tower is 308 meters high (1,010 ft).

Sue, I was looking at your pictures & posts earlier this morning while you were still working on this thread.  I held off posting and I'm glad I did.  You added lots more and it's great.

You made me try to think back about my trip to Morocco and I think I may have taken a group shop of some with us in front of the mosque we visited and the guide quickly told us it was a no-no.  We kind of laughed about taking group shots with the bus in the background instead of the mosque...

We also found that male shop owners when we were browsing would physically touch us, like taking our arm, to draw us to other merchandise.  It freaked me out, but was afraid to react for fear I'd be arrested for insulting the shopkeeper.  If someone touched us here, that would be something else.

All of my photos were on a 35mm and the ones I had online, a co-worker did for me back in 2001.  I think I may have lost them, so I'd have to scan what I have and put a CD or something to compare with yours.  (our scanner is broken, and I'd have to find the pics to do it, though)

Your daughter is lovely and her gown will be exquisite.  As I said before, I'm glad you got to spend time with her and I certainly understand how you must have felt leaving.

Thank you for sharing all of this.

Sue - thank you for sharing your travel experience with us and also those lovely pictures. I am surprised that they litter so badly and I guess all the building activity is in answer to the refugees from other Middle East countries due to the war and other conditions.
Your daughter has grown into a beautiful young lady and I wish her every happiness for her life ahead. I hope you will post more pictures from her forthcoming wedding.
Thank you again.

about the sand storms they have over there
It grounds planes and work period
The Guy that took this picture Josh his signature line on this photo
was " Man We will be shitting sand castles later"   I laughed

WOW!  Those pics are awesome and amazing!   The sandstorm one, looks kinda scary!  That would kill me with my contacts, I'd have to hide undercover until it passed! :P

I love the pic our troops in front of that Huge plane!  Almost made me cry.  God Bless them all!

Thank your daughter for her service and her friend who sent the pics for me!

Angie, I was able to view those pictures when Sue first posted them, but I, too, see little boxes with a red X.....maybe it's a photobucket issue?  I right clicked and the link is there.....not sure.
