New Orleans man hid heroin in his diaper  ::MonkeyEek::

NEW ORLEANS — Frank Keys Jr. faces up to 40 years in prison after he was found cruising down the highway with more than 200 grams of heroin in the diaper he was wearing, federal officials said.

Keys, 38, of New Orleans was charged Friday by a federal grand jury. He got in trouble June 3 in St. John the Baptist Parish, north of New Orleans, when sheriff's deputies pulled over the car he was in for a traffic violation, according to court documents.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) - A monkey is back in it's enclosure in an Indiana zoo following a MacGyver-like escape this week.

The spider monkey made a break for it on Wednesday while workers were cleaning an empty moat surrounding its habitat at the Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City, Indiana. It then used a garden hose to scale its way out of the moat and onto the roof of a water filtration plant.

The primate was finally caught at a nearby boat dealership, where it was perched atop a white and blue speedboat.

The zoo's director says the adventurous monkey is sociable and didn't pose any danger to people.

Amber Alert Issued for 2 Boys After Father Shoots Estranged Wife

LOS ANGELES —

A man shot his estranged wife after she dropped off their two young sons on Father's Day and took off with the boys, authorities said.

The pickup truck he used Sunday morning to get away from his Sunland home north of Los Angeles was found empty on Sunday night in Lancaster, Los Angeles police Officer Karen Smith said.

Jose Luis Ortega, 26, shot the boys' mother as many as 12 times, but police said she was able to speak while being taken to the hospital.

"He told his wife that he was going to kill her family and that he was going to flee to Mexico," Smith said.

An Amber Alert has been issued for the two boys, 5-year-old Diego Fabian Ortega and 3-year-old Luis Gonzalo Ortega.

Their mother's name has not been released. She was in very serious condition early Monday following surgery.

Ortega is an itinerant construction worker, police said, and should be considered armed.

Neighbor Trevor Pikhart said he was getting ready to brush his teeth Sunday morning when the shooting started. "All of a sudden we heard four shots — boom, boom, boom, boom," Pikhart said. There was a pause, he said, then more shots.

Inspiration for Muppet, Kermit the Frog, has died

Kermit Scott's brother-in-law, Aaron Moss, says the retired
philosophy professor who lived in Monroe, Va., died recently. He

Family and friends said Scott shared his namesake's whimsical
smile.
Henson and Scott grew up as friends in Leland, a small
Mississippi Delta town now home to a Muppets museum.
The Henson family moved away from Leland and the two lost touch.
Scott went on to become a history professor at Yale, Purdue and
Millsaps College, and was an advocate for the poor. He and his
wife, Aadron, founded the Welfare Rights Organization and the food
bank of Lafayette, Ind.

Cross-Dressing Students Get 'Transvestite Toilet' at Thai School   ::MonkeyEek::


BANGKOK, Thailand —  For teen boys who prefer to dress as girls at one rural high school in Thailand, taking a bathroom break no longer means choosing between "male" and "female" restrooms. There's now a "transvestite toilet."

The Kampang School in northeastern Thailand conducted a survey last term that showed more than 200 of the school's 2,600 students considered themselves transgender, said school director Sitisak Sumontha.

So, when classes resumed in May, the school unveiled a unisex restroom designated by a human figure split in half — part man in blue and part woman in red. Below it are the words "Transvestite Toilet."

Three transgender students praised the new restroom as they plucked their eyebrows and applied face powder in front of the mirror outside the stalls.

"I'm so happy about this," Vichai Sangsakul, a teenager with a pixie hairdo pulled back with a pink barrette, told Thailand's PBS news channel on Tuesday. "It looks bad going to female restrooms. What would other people think?"

Most rural Thais are conservative in many ways, but the trailblazing toilet initiative at the school in northeastern Sisaket province reflects another aspect of Thai society: its tolerance of the country's very visible transgender community. The term describes a wide range of identities including cross-dressers, transvestites, transsexuals and those born with the physical characteristics of both sexes.

These students want to be able to go to the restroom in peace without fear of being watched, laughed at or groped," said school director Sitisak Sumontha.

He said the concept reflected a growing need at Thai schools and universities.

Kampang is not Thailand's first educational institution to set up unisex washrooms, though Sitisak said he believed it was a first for a secondary school. A 1,500-student technical college in the northern province of Chiang Mai set up a "Pink Lotus Bathroom" for its 15 transvestite students in 2003.

Deputy Education Minister Boonlue Prasertsopar recently said the ministry plans to count the number of transgender university students.

He said he was not promoting transgender interests, "but if there are a lot of them in a university and it's a problem, we may have to consider building toilets and dormitories for them."

Transgenders are regularly seen on TV soap operas and throughout Bangkok, working at department store cosmetics counters, popular restaurants, in office jobs and in the capital's red-light districts. Thailand also has transgender beauty pageants.

Klaas and any others that got emails from when HTFM was hacked:  I am NOT, I repeat NOT a member of HTFM, never have been, and I got nasty emails.  Just so you know.  Klaas, you were kind enough to reply to my post about getting the nasty emails and told me that those who were MEMBERS of HTFM got emails.  Well, I am wondering if it was a case of key logging, because as I said, I am not a member.  I was logged in here to SM, and was on the Matthew's missing person thread, and went to the message board that was posted.  I never gave my email.  I just clicked on it to read.  I got the emails the same day, and I knew this is where I had been.  My email addy is used ONLY for this forum  and gets almost zero spam.  I didn't open any of the emails, and reported the abuse/spam.  It was all very weird and it's sad some folks have nothing else to do but mess around with other people's stuff.   ::MonkeyNoNo::

Wow, now that's interresting.  I really don't know anything about Key logging.  I suppose it could have something to do with when you viewed the HFTM board but I really don't know how that works.  How would they then get your email addy?  I just don't know?  I am a member of HFTM so I did get the emails but I assumed (incorrectly) that only members got the email.  I wish I knew more about how hackers get stuff.  I'll see if Dugga has any ideas.

For those of you who have read the books with her illustrations or read them to your children, grandchildren, or even those interested in garden who read her book on gardening, Tasha Tudor died yesterday.

Tasha Tudor died today at age 92. She was a wonderful gardener and artist. I know about her through her illustrations and the book, "Tasha Tudor's Garden."

I particularly liked the pictures of her pushing a wheelbarrow of manure for her roses and other perennials, while she was in her 80's, I think. Barefooted, no less. She is someone I wish I had known in person.

I always wanted to be like Tasha Tudor. Unfortunately, recently my wheelbarrow days are quite limited by the MS that plays havoc on my muscle and nerves when I am out in the heat.   ::MonkeyCool::

Yikes, Klaas, I went through a several-month-long upgrade/remodel about 21 months ago, which was the upgrade from hell.  Nothing was normal about my house, I learned going through the project.  I knew our house was built by and for a contractor who was from Florida.  Little did we (or our worker bees) know, he had reinforced the concrete such that this house could sustain earthquakes, hurricanes and jackhammers from hell.    But with it completed, we are happily enjoying it now but I wish I had opted for marble and not granite for my kitchen countertops and let me say, "never, never get black granite bathroom countertops" if you have a cat who sheds a lot and likes to drink from the faucet. ::MonkeyConfused::

Klaas, we have been at 100 intermittently for a couple weeks.  We went from what was like fall weather, suddenly to the hottest temperatures of summer, quite a change, but today, I am thankful for not having to live through what the unfortunate people of the Midwest are suffering. 

I heard one volunteer describe 20 miles of highway under water and another who volunteersmanship is his way of life to say that this is like "Katrina," is very much an understatement.  So for those of you who do not already have enough on your volunteer plate or prayer list, let's remember these brave and unfortunate people of the midwest, the heart of America, where homes are destroyed, lives are lost and hope is through our volunteers, our monetary contributions and most of all through our prayers.

For the most part our construction has gone pretty well even though it always seems one thing leads to another.  Our big problem right now is that the tile guy messed up the order for the tile and we are short some of the blue tiles.  This is a problem as it took forever to get the tile in the first place.  We are being told that they think they can overnight it on Monday and we'll have it by Tuesday.  I hope that's the case as we need the fireplace done so our carpet can be installed on Friday the 27th.  I should know by Monday if it''s going to be an issue.

Black...eeeks not in this house with our 2 Jack Russells and their shedding, LOL ::MonkeyHaHa::  We do have a dark burgandy couch but it's leather so the dog hairs don't stick, LOL  ::MonkeyHaHa::

Seems like it might be a little cooler today.  Like you it's the drastic changes in temperature that are hard.  Lately it seems like one day it's 60 and the next 100.  Hard to get used to.  Also like you, my husband is about useless when it gets this hot because of his MS. 

Are you talking about the man who was just convicted of killing his wife on their honeymoon snorkeling?  I missed Greta but I did read about the case.  What a jerk, I'm glad they found him guilty.

I was at work and saw this story.  This man makes me sick.  He murdered his wife and as you can see he watched another diver try and go rescue her.  He said he went for help instead of trying to save her but as you can see he is just floating there looking and still didn't help.  He is an experienced diver also.

The girls father said he wanted her to take out extra life insurance before they got married and put it in his name but the girl told him she did when she really didn't.  She didn't put anything in his name.

Klaas, I trust you will get your tile.  We had a situation similar on the slate in one of our bathrooms and I asked them not to put it down until the extra shipment arrived (we only needed 4 pieces but they don't sell it like that on order) that we needed arrived. It looks pretty and the blue pearl granite that we already had installed was a great match.   

Klaas, San, this is the right person.  He is from Hoover (Birmingham) area and she is from Helena (I think that is sort of in the area where SB lives, but not sure).  San got it right, not only is he a POS, he is a big POS.

WASHINGTON - For most folks, a nice hug and some sympathy can help a bit after we get pushed around. Turns out, chimpanzees use hugs and kisses the same way. And it works. Researchers studying people's closest genetic relatives found that stress was reduced in chimps that were victims of aggression if a third chimp stepped in to offer consolation.

"Consolation usually took the form of a kiss or embrace," said Dr. Orlaith N. Fraser of the Research Center in Evolutionary Anthropology and Paleoecology at Liverpool John Moores University in England.

"This is particularly interesting," she said, because this behavior is rarely seen other than after a conflict.

"If a kiss was used, the consoler would press his or her open mouth against the recipient's body, usually on the top of the head or their back. An embrace consisted of the consoler wrapping one or both arms around the recipient."

The result was a reduction of stress behavior such as scratching or self-grooming by the victim of aggression, Fraser and colleagues report in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Frans de Waal of the Yerkes Primate Center at Emory University in Atlanta said the study is important because it shows the relationship between consolation and stress reduction. Previous researchers have claimed that consolation had no effect on stress, said de Waal, who was not part of Fraser's research team.

"This study removes doubt that consolation really does what the term suggests: provide relief to distressed parties after conflict. The evidence is compelling and makes it likely that consolation behavior is an expression of empathy," de Waal said.

De Waal suggested that this evidence of empathy in apes is "perhaps equivalent to what in human children is called 'sympathetic concern.'"

That behavior in children includes touching and hugging of distressed family members and "is in fact identical to that of apes, and so the comparison is not far-fetched," he said.

While chimps show this empathy, monkeys do not, he added.

There is also suggestive evidence of such behavior in large-brained birds and dogs, said Fraser, but it has not yet been shown that it reduces stress levels in those animals.

Previous research on conflict among chimps concentrated on cases where there is reconciliation between victim and aggressor, with little attention to intervention by a third party.

Fraser and colleagues studied a group of chimps at the Chester Zoo in England from January 2005 to September 2006, recording instances of aggression such as a bite, hit, rush, trample, chase or threat.

The results show that "chimpanzees calm distressed recipients of aggression by consoling them with a friendly gesture," Fraser said.

Consolation was most likely to occur between chimpanzees who already had valuable relationships, she added.

The research was supported by the Leakey Trust.

Klaas, is that the name of your paint 'GREEN DAY?'  You have a clear shot of your TV in the living room from you computer.  Now, can I ask, is that a dedicated computer room or are you in another room, i.e., library, bedroom, etc.  I am trying to imagine where you are.  :)

I was joking, Green Day is the band and it is a DVD of Green Day on the TV.  The TV is not hooked up to the satellite dish yet  ::MonkeyHaHa::

My computer desk is at the far side of the room in the dining room area.  We really never use the dining room but do have a dining table and hutch.  So it's not a dedicated computer room.  I could have a computer room but choose not to, I'd rather be in the living room/dining room where the action is instead of hiding in a room in the back  ::MonkeyWink::

The living room, dining room/computer area are all open with only a half wall dividing them.  The kitchen is open as well so I guess it's called a "great room". 

Klaas, I have enjoyed following your construction.  Are you going to be able to have your 4th of July party?  Everything is beautiful.

Hi BlueMoon - yes, I'm certain we will be able to have our 4th of July party.  As of today, it looks like the fireplace will be done before Friday.  Carpet will be laid on Friday and we will be able to move back into the area over the weekend.  The exterior of the house (new paint) won't be done before the 4th but that's OK, no big deal.  We'll just be happy to get back into the living room and master bedroom.   ::MonkeyHaHa::

That's great.  I know you cannot wait to get everything back in order. I love the fireplace. AND the TV is awesome.  I have a 42" and we love it.  Older we get the more we need the big screen to properly focus. ::MonkeyLaugh::

So you have completely quit smoking?  Me and hubby are going to give it a go after vacation.  Guess he will go the route of nicotine gum and I will go with the new pill they came out with.  I have already tried the patch in the past. It worked until after the 3 months and as soon as I quit wearing it it was back to smoking.  Hope this time will be easier. 

Yes, completely quit smoking and actually no desire but I'm still on the 7mg patch right now.  So you went back to smoking after being on the patch for 3 months?  I was on the patch many years ago but cheated, I'd wear it during the day then take it off at night and smoke, LOL.

My husband actually quit cold turkey, no patch.  We've both been doing great.  Smoking is just no longer an option for me, I really would rather breathe than smoke  ::MonkeyHaHa::

I saw some of this story a night or two ago; I agree with you San...he is a murderer!  The report I saw said there is a witness that saw him giving her a "bear hug" right before she went to the bottom!

Klaas, I think I know the floor plan you have now, so I can imagine where you are.  I am into paint right now, so naturally I was thinking that was the name of a paint color.  I am always painting and repainting.  I can never be satisfied. I love green paints.  I don't know why but I am into off-whites and greens right now.

Tyler, I have been using a lot of that nice sage green and white as wel.  I also painted my dining room red.  I already had wallpaper below the chair rail that I really like so I just matched the darketst shade of red from one of the flowers and painted the walls above the chair rail this lovely red.  And what a fun room to decorate at Christmas time when the walls already have a head start!

Thanks ******* - it's getting closer  ::MonkeyDance::  Tomorrow they will finish the fireplace, I'll take more pictures then.  Friday the carpet gets installed and then we'll be back in business!!!  Will still have exterior work and some work to do in other areas but the main part will be done and we'll be back in our master bedroom and living room!!  I can't wait!

Klaas- Your house is shaping up nicely and looks very "Californian" as my MIL would say. Attractive color scheme, very fresh looking. It is great you quit smoking. Keep up the good work, you will feel so much better in a lot of ways. Oh, I had to laugh at you saying you have leather due to the shedding of the JRT's. My little one sheds a lot too. I did not know that about JRT's before I got one. Wouldn't trade her for the world, but keeping that white hair under control is a constant challenge. I have to use a pet(lint) roller to really get it all.

I have been in the hospital this week (heart). The doctor is going to treat what he found with medicine rather than surgery. That is good news. (I am going to see Jay Leno tomorrow night, looking forward to it, and surgery would not have fit into my plans.)   ::MonkeyCool::

Klaas, I enjoy seeing and reading about the updates of your house.  It really looks good.  I can't believe you quit smoking during all of that.  That's amazing.  Congratulations, quitting is tough, but you are much tougher.  I am glad you are feeling much better.  Do you feel any change due to quitting?

The t-shirts and planters are really cute.  I did go to the web page and see the others.  They cracked me up.

Shell, I am sorry to hear about your heart problem, but am encouraged that medicine can keep it under control.  I will keep you in my prayers.

OK Monkeys...ready for the Race For The Cure update?

I don't know why it has taken me so long...just such an emotional experience, hard to put it into words!!! I have tried every day...but just couldn't!!

Awesome experience, just totally AWESOME!!! Not even a word in the dictionary to describe it. Really wasn't much of a race!!! lol There were over 60,000 people!!! Can you imagine? It was a record. Over 60,000 people!!! I wish I could show you what it looked like!!! My darned camera batteries were dead but manager took pics and I am still waiting for her to send them to me so I can share!!! There were just wall to wall people elbow to elbow from sidewalk...across the street to the other sidewalk!!! When you would hit a hill...you could see just THOUSANDS of people ahead and in front of you. People with cameras would try and slow to take a pic w/out getting trampled...not an easy feat!! lol So I could not really move at a pace other than what the crowd set!!! All that training and essentially I walked at a snail's pace...lol...but was told it was more "symbolic" and boy was it symbolic!!!

You never saw so much pink in your life!!! And there was some sort of entertainment about every half mile. There were bands, high school cheerleaders from local schools, one 1/2 mile mark had a big bubble machine so you ran....errr walked...lol...through tons of bubbles. On one 1/2 mark there was an Irish band and they had bagpipes. I almost lost it at that one!!! My Mom was Scottish and loved the bagpipes. To this day when I hear bagpipes I think of my Mom and just cry!! Love It!!! Felt my Mom with me every step of the way!!!

I had My Mom and Peaches and my girlfriend Darla who is also a survivor on my shirt...but some shirts were really done up with pics and all. I am going to do that next year. There were some really great slogans!!! Some of my favorites were : Big or Small...Save Them all!!!,
I LUV My Girls!!!  Save The TaTas...just too funny!!!

There were fat people, skinny people, old people, young people, people of every race, generation and culture coming together for a common goal. I don't ever remember feeling that empowered in my whole life!!! There were NO VICTIMS!!! Just "honorary members" like my Mom, Survivors, and the rest were just Warriors!!! I saw shirts that read "I AM The Cure"...how empowering is that??!!!


At the end of the Race...the finish line was a rainbow of pink balloons overhead and each Survivor received a pink rose. Oh my gosh Monkeys, I can not thank you enough for your generous support!!!

Peaches...it would have made you break down in tears of joy!!! I could not stop thinking of you and how empowered you became in your fight and I was so damned proud to wear your name on my shirt!!!! I raised $690.00. That is almost 10 free mammograms!!! How awesome!!! Thank you Peaches for supporting me and for letting me represent you in the race...it was a true honor!!!

True, we do use the fireplace to heat up the room in the winter but not often.  We probably only use our fireplace 5 or six times a year when it's really cold and nasty out but we normally just turn on our furnace  ::MonkeyWink::  I do like having a fireplace though in the event that a natural desaster left us without power and we needed heat.

Klaas, glad everything is coming together at your home.  I'm jealous because we need some work done here.

We have a couple of friends who arrange candles in the hearth instead of burning wood.  Less mess and gives a pretty glow.

Presuming the carpet is in....hope all went well. 

We have 2 graduation parties this weekend so I'll try to check in beforehand.  Maybe our day will come and I'll be able to share some photos...hope so...

Carpet is in and it's beautiful!  The battery in my camera died so I'm going to take a bunch of photos tomorrow morning and post them.  We won't be getting most of our furniture back until Tuesday morning.

In a zoo in California , a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately,due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to thei r tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fa ll into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only 'orphans' that could be found quickly, were a litter of wea nling pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in  tiger skin and placed the b abies around th e mother tiger. Would they become cubs or pork chops??

Jay Leno was  ::MonkeyDance:: His show was clean and funny. We sat in 11th row, and he is much better looking in person. I think he looks good on TV, but I did not realize what a good looking man he is.

Woman Shoots Herself While Trying to Kill Mice

POTTER VALLEY, Calif. —

A Mendocino County woman who was trying to kill mice in her trailer with a gun ended up shooting herself and another person.

The 43-year-old woman pulled out her .44-caliber Magnum revolver after she saw the mice scurrying across the floor of her trailer on Highway 20 in Potter Valley, sheriff's officials said.

But she accidentally dropped the gun, which went off as it struck the floor. The bullet went through the woman's kneecap, bounced off the keys sitting on the belt loop of a 42-year-old man in the trailer and grazed the man's groin before ending up in his coin pocket.

Authorities did not release the shooting victims' names.

Prosecutor: DNA clears JonBenet Ramsey's family


BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- Prosecutors say new DNA tests have cleared JonBenet Ramsey's family in the 1996 killing of the 6-year-old beauty queen.

Boulder County District Attorney Mary Lacy said Wednesday the tests point to an "unexplained third party."

She says prosecutors don't consider any member of the Ramsey family to be a suspect.

JonBenet's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, were long said to be under an "umbrella of suspicion" in the girl's slaying.

I’ll bet you’ve never seen a pet like the one in this Video of the Day. In 1969, two friends, John Rendall and Ace Berg, purchased a lion. At the time, Christian the lion was a 35-pound cub. He had been born in a zoo. The friends raised Christian in their London home. All three hung out in a friend’s furniture shop on the weekends.

Within a year, Christian had grown to 185 lbs. Rendall and Berg realized they couldn’t keep him much longer. But they didn’t know what to do with him. A chance encounter changed that. Two actors from the film Born Free walked into the furniture store.

The actors recommended a conservationist, George Adamson, living in Kenya. Christian was soon in Africa. There he was rehabilitated and released into the wild.

In 1974, Rendall and Berg decided to visit Christian one last time. He was now a wild animal. Adamson told them it was doubtful that Christian could be found. No one had seen him in nine months.

The two flew to Kenya, anyway. On the day they landed, Christian appeared outside Adamson’s camp. Somehow, he knew. He waited outside the camp until Rendall and Berg arrived.

When you get a chance. LOL  Like that will happen, but we have a few more mods to help you so maybe you would do this.  Please elaborate on all the wildfires out there in your area and why or how they get so out of hand.  Is the fire dept state run or are there local fire dept's that have to coordinate with all the others.  It is a county fire dept?  It seems that there are so many needed that any fire dept would quite large in all the different counties. I don't know much about why there are so many fires out there except that you have a lot of them and they are terrible at times.  If it's not fires the mudslides get you and if you survive them you get earthquakes.  Here in the South it's mainly just tornadoes. Thanks.

Most of the fires right now are in Northern California and I know little about them no more than what you know.  As far as fire departments, sometimes they are city fire departments and sometimes county, it just depends upon how your city is set up.  When there are so many, fire departments from all over the state and country assist. Yes, the burned areas will now be more prone to mudslides and floods.  It's possible they get out of hand because they are in forest/mountain area that is hard to reach?  I really don't know.

Keep in mind that right now if I didn't have a TV, I wouldn't know about the fires.  I can't see anything or smell anything they are that far away. 

As far as earthquakes go, I have lived in California my entire life.  I have never lived in a home that has had noticeable damage due to an earthquake.  The worst damage would be maybe some cracks in the concrete.  I've never had anything fall off the wall only shake.  I've also never had to evacuate for any reason fire, flood or otherwise.

Ben & Jerry's makes `Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road'

Ben & Jerry's has done it again: Hoping to honor rocker Elton John before his first-ever Vermont performance, Vermont's crazy-cool confectioner has whipped up a flavor just for him — "Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road."

The limited-batch ice cream, made from "an outrageous symphony of decadent chocolate ice cream, peanut butter cookie dough, butter brickle and white chocolate chunks," is a take-off on his 1970s album and song "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road."

It will be available from July 18 to July 25 in the company's Vermont scoop shops, with proceeds going to the Elton John AIDS Foundation, officials said Tuesday.

It'll also be doled out in cups, cones and dishes at John's sold-out Champlain Valley Expo show Monday.

The Burlington-based ice cream maker — whose rock 'n' roll-themed products have honored late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia ("Cherry Garcia") and Vermont-bred jam rockers Phish ("PhishFood") — wanted to toast John because he was finally getting around to playing the Green Mountain State.

He's performed in every other U.S. state.

"It's hard to cram 50 years of musical history that Elton John brings to the table in one pint," said Sean Greenwood, a spokesman for Ben & Jerry's Homemade Holdings Inc.

John collaborated, and has given his stamp of approval to the ice cream, even though he hasn't actually tasted it, Greenwood said.

"He said, `Chocolate and peanut butter, guys, if you can make something like that work,'" said Greenwood.

In the spring, the rains fall and nourish all the dormant plants to the point that they flourish. Next, the summer heat dries out all the plants. Even my garden plants have to be watered every other day or they will dry up and die like the chapperal. Next comes the fires. 44 Australian and New Zealand firefighters have arrived in the United States to assist local firefighters tackle hundreds of fires burning across west coast states.

Since June, nearly 1,800 lightning-sparked wildfires have affected some 1.2 million hectares. California, Washington, Idaho and Montana have suffered the most damage, and this year, the annual bushfire average has been racked up in just six months.

California is the worst-hit state. Estimates suggest that 322 fires are still active. Unseasonally warm and dry conditions have seen the bushfire season arrive a month early in the US.

The Australian firefighters flew out on Sunday for a one day induction in Idaho before moving on to northern California. #1  Any new laptop you get, no matter what the brand should come with an internal wireless card so there shouldn't be a problem accessing the internet with your already installed wireless router.

#2  Whatever laptop you get, see if you can get XP installed instead of Vista.  Vista still sucks, IMO and makes a machine run slower than it should.

#3  You could always go with a Mac but they would be more expensive.

IMO -- Vista is alright (since they brought out Service Pack 1) , but DO NOT get a computer with Vista with less than 2GB RAM - minimum. 3 GB even better.

Also, with ANY new computer -- immediately uninstall ALL free crapware that comes with them - including Norton Anti-virus, and trials of Microsoft works.

My sister gave me her old Mac and I use it for the internet when I am booted off my desktop.  I use Safari and I have to say it's pretty good.  I just have to get used to it because I have become so adjusted to my desktop.

My next desk will probably be a Dell.  But I cringe at the thought of using Vista because I used the Microsoft programs Word, PowerPoint and Excel a lot.  I updated my old computer with the Windows 2007 and I have to say it has taken me time to get used to finding stuff.  Also, if you purchase the 2007 Microsoft software you have to remember that most companies aren't that updated yet so if you send a document they might not be able to open it.  I have to remember to save it down a version which it does give me the option.

I got a new laptop after the fire, and I have been on my own, winging it. It came with lots of free stuff, and I am clueless as to what to keep and what to get rid of. I am sure it would work faster and better if I didn't have all this crap on it. For starters, how do I get rid of the free office version and anti virus that came with this? I know how to delete a program, but something tells me there is stuff left behind. Any advice would be appreciated.

Wreck, loved that name decrapifier.  I uninstalled Mc Afee. last night on a Gateway, Vista, Laptop. I went to Start-Control panel-when  control panel came up there was a place that said Programs and uninstall programs. I clicked on Programs.This brought up a menu that said Program and features and under that it said uninstall programs. When I clicked on that (the uninstall programs) it brought up a list of installed programs. In my case I just went to Mc Afee and clicked once and found the uninstall button. From there it talked you through it.

Two local children are using their talents to raise money for a small orphanage in East Africa.

Bo Hundley and Patty Driscoll, best friends, Lutherville residents, and rising eighth-graders at Ridgely Middle School, make sock monkeys by hand, sell them and donate the proceeds to Kinship House, an orphanage in the Ugandan village of Gganda.

Both girls describe themselves as being very religious. Hundley said she was inspired to do the charity work through the Catholic church she attends, Church of the Nativity in Timonium.

"One day at church they were talking about using your gifts to help the world," she said.

Hundley thought it would be a good idea to do something unique.

"There's plenty of organizations donating things like food and water," she said.

Instead, they settled on making sock monkeys.

The monkeys are "cute and happy and they make us happy," Driscoll said.

The pair make various-size sock monkeys at Driscoll's home and sell them for $8 to $12. The profit depends on the cost of materials -- the expense of the socks being primary among them -- but after selling more than 50 of the puppets, the pair has raised $800 for Kinship House.

They plan to send the money to the orphanage along with one sock monkey for each of the 27 children there.

After raising money for Kinship House, Hundley said she and Driscoll plan to research charity opportunities in other parts of the world.

Wreck, AVG free addition kept telling me it would not continue to give me updates on my free version. So, I bought it. Problem is, the firewall is causing me headaches, so I turned the firewall off. The free version was a breeze to use and maintain. This version, not so good. I didn't know 8.0 had a free version. sigh

also, I can't seem to get to the decrap site. (probably my avg stopping it, the one I paid for  ::MonkeyConfused::

They quit updating version 7 when they brought out 8.0. They unfortunately don't really make it easy to switch to "Free" version 8. (they want your money  ::MonkeyRoll::). Version 8. is actually better because you can choose precisely what time of day to run the scan. You really need to keep the firewall enabled -- what problems are you having with it?

The AntiVirus won't prevent you from going TO a site -- it will stop you or warn you if you are about to DOWNLOAD something bad or if an e-mail has a virus in it. The
"Decrapifier" should only be used for brand new computers -- use the method Sam used (via the control panel) to uninstall programs you don't want anymore. Also, don't try to run 2 different Anti-virus programs simultaneously.

Problem with deciding what profile to use. When I chose home/small office option, it caused problems when I wanted to play cards in my card room, and problems with msn messenger. When I chose allow all profile, I still had problems. Hubby says we have a firewall in our router? so I really don't need any other firewall. I turned avg firewall off, and it keeps turning back on. All I really do on my computer is email, read and surf, play cards and games, and messenger. So when I can't do those simple things, it makes me mad. I loved avg free. Thinking maybe I should download the free version again using your link.  ::MonkeyWink::

Well, it won't download so I am sending the free version link to another computer (hubbys) and he will make a cd of it and then install it here. He says I must have a setting wrong since it won't download. This monkey has a lot to learn.  ::MonkeyRoll::

You would probably need to uninstall the V.8 befroe you can download the "free" edition. It sounds as though you may hace something else going on (security settings in your browser) for your firewall to "acting up." Which browser do you use?

I uninstalled .8 and downloaded the free edition. Whew, I like this much better. I use ie browser. Looked at security, and I have "protected mode" checked. Should it be unchecked?

I run mine at the "Default" level with the ""Protected Mode" ENABLED.  Did uninstalling the AVG firewall help? Try using the firewall that comes with VISTA enabled and turning off (uninstall all others). The firewall that is in your router is a "hardware" firewall and should not interfere with the Vista one.

Wreck, After uninstalling McAfee the other day I installed the free link you provided. I had to download some other little windows update before it would install. So far so good. Thanks.

Avocado
The avocado is high in fat, but most of the fat is the heart-healthy monounsaturated kind. We know the avocado tastes great, but outside of an occasional guacamole dip, few of us reach for this high-fiber food for salads or as a great side dish.

You'll also get protein, a good dose of vitamins A and E, some B vitamins, lots of potassium and a dollop of copper. The rich and creamy avocado has been called the "chocolate" of fruits.

Sweet potato
At Thanksgiving, we dash for sweet potatoes as if they're available just once a year. But you can bake or microwave these tubers anytime for a super dose of vitamin A — five times the daily value (DV) the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends.

Sweet potatoes also offer some vitamin C and a significant helping of important minerals, including calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and iron. And this tasty fat-free combo of nutrients brightens your plate.

Soybeans
The FDA recently added soy to the list of foods that can make health claims because of its value in reducing the risk of heart disease. Soy is high in protein — one cup of beans can fill 40 percent of the DV for protein — and the bean also serves up generous helpings of fiber, calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorus and magnesium. How you eat this versatile food is up to you — cooked and mixed in salads or casseroles, roasted for snacks, or in tofu, tempeh or soy milk. Soy has some fat, but very little saturated fat.

The use of soy products to treat symptoms of menopause is controversial. While it may improve symptoms for some women, the phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) that may help relieve hot flashes may also increase the risk of breast cancer.

Dried figs
Tasty as Fig Newton cookies are, figs stand on their own. They provide high-fiber, topped with some B vitamins and iron, finished off with abundant potassium and calcium. Five figs give you as much calcium as half a glass of milk.

What to do with a fig? Pop a few in your mouth, sneak them into casseroles or replace raisins with them in a salad.

We never think of this legume unless it's in our soup. But put lentils in rice or casseroles and you've added one of the highest-protein and highest-fiber foods around.

A cup of lentils supplies about 40 percent of the DV for protein and about 65 percent of the DV for fiber. The lentil is high in potassium, calcium and iron, and a good source of B vitamins, phosphorus and copper. The fat content? Zero.

Kale( I HATE)
Dark, leafy green vegetables are an acquired taste. Maybe now's the time to see if your taste buds have matured to accommodate this no-fat, low-calorie, super-high-vitamin-A food.

One cup of kale (boiled, but not overcooked) gives you double the DV for vitamin A. You'll also get some vitamin C, a small amount of B vitamins and a generous amount of calcium. Look for kale's healthy but ignored cousins: Swiss chard, mustard greens and collards.

Barley
Here's another soup secret we tend to forget despite its claim to protein, fiber, potassium, phosphorus and iron. One cup supplies 25 percent of the DV for fiber.

Eat pearled barley as a side dish instead of rice, use it for a hearty casserole, or boil it to create a unique base for a stir-fry meal. And look at the high nutritional content of some other forgotten but powerful grains, like quinoa and amaranth.

If you're a pessimist, the primate known as the "Kipunji'"discovered just three years ago, is already bordering on extinction.

If you're more of an optimist, you may think that its small numbers are why it was never discovered until recently so 1,117 of them are nothing to be alarmed about.

The Wildlife Conservation Society is in the alarm business so they're saying that the first-ever census of the forest-dwelling primate showing 1,117 individuals, according to a study released in the July issue of the journal Oryx, is worrisome.

Kipunji

Discovered in 2005, the kipinji made headlines again in 2006 when DNA analysis revealed that the species represented an entire new genus of primate; the first since 1923.

The population estimate was the result of more than 2,800 hours of field work by WCS scientists in the Southern Highlands and Udzungwa Mountains in Tanzania where the kipunji was discovered. The team found that the monkey's range is restricted to just 6.82 square miles (17.69 square kilometers) of forest in two isolated regions.

The authors also discovered that much of the monkey's remaining habitat is severely degraded by illegal logging and land conversion. In addition, the monkey itself is the target of poachers. Because of these combined threats, WCS proposes that the kipunji should be classified by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) as "critically endangered" – which means it is threatened with extinction in the wild if immediate conservation action is not taken.

"The kipunji is hanging on by the thinnest of threads," said Dr. Tim Davenport, Tanzania Country Director for the Wildlife Conservation Society. "We must do all we can to safeguard this extremely rare and little understood species while there is still time."

Along with the IUCN designation, WCS is investing in the protection and restoration of the kipunji's remaining habitat and local conservation education of local people to help safeguard remaining populations.

Animal shelter caring for lost 44-pound cat

Shelter officials are calling the kitty "Princess Chunk."

Shelter volunteer Deborah Wright tells The Courier Post of Cherry Hill the cat is built like a quarterback.

The cat's owner has until Saturday to reclaim her. After that, "Chunk" will be eligible for adoption.

Golden Retriever Adopts 3 Abandoned Tiger Cubs at Kansas Zoo

CANEY, Kan. —

A dog at a southeast Kansas zoo has adopted three tiger cubs abandoned by their mother.

Safari Zoological Park owner Tom Harvey said the tiger cubs were born Sunday, but the mother had problems with them.

A day later, the mother stopped caring for them. Harvey said the cubs were wandering around, trying to find their birth mother, who wouldn't pay attention to them. That's when the cubs were put in the care of a golden retriever, Harvey said.

Harvey said it's unusual for dogs to care for tiger cubs, but it does happen. He said he has seen reports of pigs nursing cubs in China, and he actually got the golden retriever after his wife saw television accounts of dogs caring for tiger cubs.

Puppies take about the same amount of time as tiger cubs to develop, and Harvey said the adoptive mother just recently weaned her own puppies.

"The timing couldn't have been any better," he said.

The mother doesn't know the difference, Harvey said. He said the adopted mother licks, cleans and feeds the cubs.

The Safari Zoological Park is a licensed facility open since 1989 and specializes in endangered species.

It has leopards, lions, cougars, baboons, ring-tailed lemurs, bears and other animals. It currently has seven white tigers and two orange tigers.

Because whit tigers are inbred from the first specimen found more than a half-century ago, they are not as genetically stable as orange tigers.

The zoo's previous litter of white tiger cubs was born April 23, although one of the three has since gone to a private zoo near Oklahoma City.

A friend sent this remarkable story about his wife to me today. I know you'll like it! My ex-wife started taking flying lessons about the time our divorce started and she got her license shortly before our divorce was final, later that same year.

Yesterday afternoon, she narrowly escaped injury in the aircraft she was piloting when she was forced to make an emergency landing in Southern Tennessee because of bad weather. Thank God our kids were with me at the Beach House this weekend.

The NTSB issued a preliminary report, citing pilot error: Tina was flying a single engine aircraft in IFR (instrument flight rating) while only having obtained a VFR (visual flight rating).

The absence of a post-crash fire was likely due to insufficient fuel on board. No one on the ground was injured.

Photograph below was taken at the scene and shows the extent of damage to her aircraft.

She was very lucky.

Thanks, Shell.  How is it going with the house/insurance, etc.?  My SIL/BIL are still battling with the insurance company over the amount since their house fire a year ago here in NJ.....they gutted the home and the roof is on, as far as I know.  They've been living elsewhere, but that's another insurance story.

The Quake Last Week
 
I was sitting on the floor in my hall organizing my file cabinets. The quake began. It started slowly - a few little movements, just as if a truck were going down the street. Then the earth began to bounce and then roll slowly.

I had absolutely no fear whatsoever and didn't think this quake was very significant. There have been at least 90 aftershocks and I have felt none of them.
 
Earthquake terminology: bouncers, rollers, shakers, up and downs.
 
My two cats ran to me and then ran into the closet.
 
Of course, every earthquake portends thoughts of "Is this the big one?" In the onset, it's difficult to tell where the quake is going until it gets going. I have experienced quakes in Southern California for over 50 years. I think I became an expert after the 1994 quake.
 
The 1994 Northridge quake was a huge one. It shook up and down for a long time. It was called a "thrust" movement. I was never so scared in my whole life and thought I was going to have a heart attack. My damage was two bottles of beer that fell out of the cabinet and broke. My daughter's damage was that the TV and opposite wall unit fell towards each other blocking the exit. The cat would not come out of the bathtub for two weeks. The dog clung to Kristi and trembled. For two weeks I slept in a sleeping bag by my front door on solid ground as three quarters of my apartment is above the parking area. I have a king sized waterbed (very, very heavy) and I have nightmares of an earthquake that will send my bedroom falling into the parking garage on top of the cars with the second floor collapsing on top of me. I would prolly drown in my waterbed.
 
I know what is possible. I hope I don't live long enough to experience the Big One.

It is not going well, I am sorry to say. We (supposedly) have plenty of coverage. Their cost estimate and the estimates we got are extremly different. Our adjuster is not settling this in a timely manner, he has lowballed us, and so far they have not met their contractual obligation. Everyone that knows the facts is baffled as to why they are being this way. October 22 is the 1 year mark. If they don't settle this fairly, and soon, we have to take the next step. We just want what is rightfully ours and to get on with our life.The bottom line is, as a rule the insurance company does not give a rats behind about the people. Money is their bottom line. I am very upset about it all, and I sympathize with your SIL/BIL situation.

Shell ~  I'm sorry to see you are still struggling with not only the catastrophe of the loss/damages to  your home, but on top of it, having to duke it out with the insurance company.  After reading your posts, my DH and I have gone to our insurance company and made changes.  We discussed what the true cost of rebuilding our home would be.  There was an initial appraised value, but we found to rebuild this home would cost a lot more.  I hope I never have to go through what you are.  You paid your premiums in good faith and expected to be compensated fairly.  What a nightmare for you!  Please let us know how this progresses.  Monkey hugs to you, Shell.  (((hugs)))

We were hit with a bad storm last night, just following my last post around 7pm on the Caylee Marie Anthony thread.  We didn't have power for hours and when they changed the original time of restored power from midnight to 6am, we went to bed.  Son said it finally did come back between 1am-2am.  Lightning brought down wires at the end of our street, but when the crew left around 10pm, power was still out in other sections, so I'm assuming they were all linked in a grid, or whatever.  We don't have a generator, so it gets pretty frustrating when these things happen.

Shell, I agree with MuffyBee and am sorry you are getting the run around.  Although the circumstances of your fire & my BIL/SIL's are different, the insurance performance is the same.  I do hope it works out for you and please do keep us informed.  You have enlightened us to things we don't think of and are not prepared for, should the moment arise.

A few of the insurance companys have been the "good guys" and done the right thing. Tops on the good guys list is AAA. There are others, but I want to be sure of who they are before I post the company names. Also, some of the companys who were good during the 03 fires are not being so good this time around. And some who were bad during the '03 fires have cleaned up their act for the '07 fires. It is also a good idea to google a particular company and type in their name and complaints, or the name and bad faith. Having a policy that says you have ample coverage, and actually getting that amount in the event of a disaster, in reality might very well not happen. However, in the event they breach their contract, a properly insured person would have leverage if it goes to court.

2NJ-Isn't it aweful when the power goes out. I don't know what to do with myself when it happens at night. Sleep sounds like the best thing to do. Although, if the air goes out and you have heat and humidity, it makes it hard to sleep.

One day when we were in NJ last week, there was such a bad storm.  We had just gone to breakfast on the boardwalk, and the sky opened up, the thunder and lightning over the ocean were pretty fierce. (It was so invigorating).  Hail started banging on everything, it was so loud.  The streets near the boardwalk were flooded because the rain came down so fast, it could not drain quickly enough.

When we were finished eating, it was over (very convenient).  When we got back to the motel, it looked like there had been a big ice cube fight.  It was fun to walk through the ice with our bathing suits on.

2NJ, we were in Ocean City.  The pictures you asked about came off of the internet and I don't know where they were from.  If I come across them again, I'll let you know.  NJ is such a beautiful state, especially if you like sand, water, fish, seafood (especially crabs), fresh fruit and veggies warm right off the land, eating outside, walking the boardwalk, fresh cut fries with lots of cider vinegar and ketchup, and going on the rides.  We also like riding in my brother's boat and his kayak. 

I have 2 brothers with houses down the shore and I invariably run into another one of my other brothers and his family while we are there.  We get to see Nights in Venice from my brother's dock.  My brothers work so much during the year, and their kids are always going to some practice or game, that we don't get to see each other much.  So we get to connect and the kids get to see their parents acting like goofballs.  No matter how old you are, when you get together with your siblings, you immediately go into age regression.  Two of my friends from elementary school have houses in Ocean City also, we go there for "girls" weekends with other friends from High School.  Then we get even younger!  Lots and lots of good memories there in Jersey.  I remember going to Wildwood for Senior week, 'nuff said.

That's exactly how it was the other night.  It was humid, and I had to open windows.  You worry about surges when the power comes back on....thinking 'did we turn off as much as we could?'.  Food in fridge?  No shower, etc....Nothin' to do!!!  We found out it was actually 3am when the power came back on...younger son was mistaken.  I'm actually thinking that the work crew called in on overtime milked it so that they'd have more hours in their pocket.  Have seen it before, but can't prove it this time. 

SIL told us yesterday that the contractor worked 1 week on their home, and found a black mold condition in the basement.  Now, the insurance company isn't sure they want to pay for that clean up, which SIL said is 9K...the contractor has other jobs, therefore, everything at their home is at a standstill.  SIL said it will be in remediation, unless she comes up with the $.  My thought is, the insurance company let this house sit for a year, while SIL/BIL paid for water/sewer/taxes they couldn't use, no heat or air conditioning, so no surprise about the mold.  In the meantime, they were forced, going on a year ago, to live in a hotel, $100 (approx.) a day, because of the insurance policy.  They had started out staying with MIL and agreed to pay her rent, but insurance company poopoo'd that based on MIL having to declare that as income/pay tax, etc. It's all so convoluted.

Morgan Freeman Injured in Car Accident

TMZ has learned that Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman, 71, has been injured in a serious car accident in Mississippi.

Cops tell us the "Dark Knight" star was in a one car accident around 11:30 PM last night north of the small town of Ruleville. He was airlifted from the accident scene to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. We're told alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the wreck, news of which was first reported by MediaTakeout.

Freeman's condition is unknown, but state troopers tell us he was talking at the scene before he was taken to the hospital. The condition of an unidentified female passenger in the car also is unknown.

(CNN) -- Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was in serious condition but in "good spirits" Monday at a Tennessee hospital after a car wreck near his home in northern Mississippi, his business partner said.

Sunday night's wreck -- in which Freeman flipped a car owned by his passenger, according to a witness -- left him with a broken left upper arm, other fractures and neck and shoulder injuries, Bill Luckett said.

"He's in good spirits, but he's in a lot of pain," said Luckett, who co-owns a restaurant and blues club with Freeman.
Freeman and a woman were extracted by paramedics after the 11:30 p.m. wreck and airlifted to the hospital, according to Angie Underwood, a Mississippi Highway Patrol spokeswoman.

The condition of the woman, Memphis resident Demaris Meyer -- whom Luckett described as a mutual friend of his and Freeman's -- wasn't released.

Freeman may have surgery as early as Monday evening and could need three to four months to recover, Luckett told reporters outside the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.

The wreck happened on a state highway about five miles outside Charleston, Mississippi, where Freeman has a home. A witness said Freeman was driving Meyer's car when it flipped.

"I heard a noise outside that sounded like a car sliding," said Bill Rogers, who lives on the highway where the accident happened. "I turned around and looked out the window real quick, and I saw a car flipping bumper-to-bumper, head over heels."

Rogers, a former police officer and sheriff's deputy, said Freeman and Meyer were unconscious when the car came to rest on its wheels. But by the time he returned from calling an ambulance, both were talking, he said.

"He wanted to get out of the car and lay on the ground," Rogers said. "I told him no, he needed to stay put until the rescue people got there."

A spokeswoman for the Memphis hospital, Milla Borden, confirmed that Freeman was in serious condition there Monday.

The cause of the wreck is being investigated, the Highway Patrol said. But Rogers said it had rained earlier in the evening, and he saw no sign of alcohol or drug use at the scene.

"My understanding of it is she was going to give him a ride home and she did not know the way, so he was going to drive the vehicle," Rogers said.

Rogers said the car flew about 45 feet before it landed on its trunk, smashing open the compartment and scattering papers.

"The car was torn up so bad I couldn't tell what it was," he said.

According to The Associated Press, Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams said Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima. Meyer and Freeman were wearing seat belts, Williams said.

The crash site is about 90 miles south of Memphis and 35 miles southeast of Clarksdale, Mississippi, where Freeman and Luckett own the Madidi restaurant and the Ground Zero blues club.

Freeman and Meyer were at Luckett's home in Clarksdale before the crash happened, Luckett said.

Freeman won an Academy Award for best supporting actor in 2005 for his role in the gritty boxing film "Million Dollar Baby." He's currently appearing on movie screens in the action film "Wanted" and in the Batman film "The Dark Knight."

He was born in Memphis and grew up in the Mississippi Delta region, moving back to open the blues club and the restaurant in 2001. In a 2005 interview with CNN, he said returning to the area was "one of the smartest moves I've made in life."

"My aim in life, when I graduated from high school, was to get out of Mississippi," he said. "I started coming back in about 1979, because my parents moved back, which I couldn't understand. What in the world would make you come back here? It took me about 20 years to figure that out."

Freeman's nonprofit foundation has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to schools in the historically poor region, and he established the club in part to preserve the Delta's musical heritage.

Rogers said Freeman "has been a fixture here for a very, very long time," though Sunday night was the first time he had met him.

"He's got the fame, he's got the fortune, yet he's got a level head and used that to help people," he said. "We're all kind of used to seeing him around the community here, so we're not surprised when we do see him."

Long story but: My ex-husband filed bankruptcy. I've had a Chase Credit Card since 1989. The balance was a $20.00 credit. After he filed, a different, additional Chase account appeared on my Credit Report with a $22,000.00 balance. I have Credit Reports dating back to 2004, and that account has never been on it.

The calls started from Chase Collections, informing me, and obnoxiously threatening me that I was now responsible for the balance. I was told that the reason it hadn't appeared on my Credit Report in the past is because he was the primary card holder, but I was now responsible. I was told they had done an investigation, and I had signed the application. I was told to send just a small payment, I was threatened with legal action, and harassed up to 8 times a day with calls. This began in April.

I responded in writing that according to the Federal Trade Commission, a credit card grantor MUST report under any party's SS#, who is monetarily and legally responsible for a credit account, to that party's Credit Report. A Joint Account would be reported under both names. An authorized user is not responsible for unpaid balances and the card company MAY report under the SS# of an authorized user or may not. I cited the source (Federal Trade Commission), and included my Credit Reports from 2004 until present (a total of 6 reports). I was also able to obtain my ex's Credit Report from him that listed the account as INDIVIDUAL for him. I also insisted the calls to stop immediately and that any contact be made in writing.

It did no good at all. The calls continued, the threats continued, and I sent a second, STRONGLY worded correspondence and copied it to my lawyer, who sent them a cease and desist letter. It did no good at all. He sent a second one, to no avail. I would go to bed, and be so enraged, I couldn't sleep. I'd get a call in the morning and be unable to focus at work. I may have lived a charmed life, but I'm simply unaccustomed to being talked to like a dog and threatened with loosing everything I've struggled to hang onto. One, particularly nasty call, ended with this bitch from Chase telling me that I could expect to pay the consequences through my credit if I intended to continue to ignore the account balance, and I responded that I had no intention of paying for an account that wasn't mine. She spit, "Oh, we'll see and have a nice day." The very next day, my credit report changed to add my son on the account as joint with me.

I started calling them, at that point, and my hair started coming out in clumps. My doc thought it was probably a thyroid thing but the tests were negative. My shower stopped up and backed up water ruined the wood floors in the hall behind it. The plumber said someone had thrown a wig down the drain. It was my hair, and I have bald spots.

Chase removed my son from the report, but began reporting the account as mine and listed it as the subject of bankruptcy! Every Credit Card and account I had immediately closed at "grantors request".

I finally sent all the correspondence, my credit reports, along with a narrative, to the Comptroller of Currency and my State Attorney General. Within 48 hours, a representative from the executive office of Chase in Chicago called to cheerfully say that I had never been anything but an authorized user on the account, and that it might take up to 7 weeks to show the account removed from my Credit Report, and have a nice day!!!! They had NO explanation for what I had been through, NO explanation why they were suddenly paying attention to the exact information I was supplying each and every caller, and NO way to restore the accounts that closed due to their false reports.

I am livid!!! I keep thinking about people who don't keep tangible records, or whose life experience hasn't taught them to be tenacious, or people who simply never consider that fighting against a giant such as Chase could have a positive result.

Did you all know that when you sign a Credit Card application (which I did not), that you waive your right to sue? You agree that if there is a dispute, it will go to mediation and that the amount of settlement will not exceed the balance of the account? It's in the fine print. I want them to regret their tactics. I want to change their tactics, I want them to feel as intimidated as they made me feel. I want them to loose sleep and smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and not be able to work. I want them to treat people with courtesy and decency and respect.

I hate people who sue at nothing and I do not think the world owes me a thing. I'm not a person who feels "entitled". Maybe it's best to just suck it up and let it fade away. Anyway, I'd appreciate your thoughts, and it's ok, whatever your opinion and perspective is. If I didn't value what you guys have to say, I wouldn't have asked. TIA!

BRAVO CBB!  Sorry about your hair loss though it was clearly lost due to stress.

My FIL got a bill from Medicare saying he owed them over $30,000.  It went back to a $300 bill that got messed up years ago (it was paid) but ended up not showing as paid by Medicare.  Long story short, he called the Medicare fraud division and was told absolutely DO NOT pay it.  Looks like it might have been some kind of inside scam. 

Also, credit card companys will write off the bankruptsy account then sell it to a private party who will try and collect on it.  Was it actually Chase contacting you or someone saying they were calling on behalf of Chase?

Glad you got it resolved finally but so sorry you had to go through it!

Three calls were from a collection agency in Texas, but they kicked it back to Chase after I presented them with my documentation. All the rest were actually from Chase.

Researchers Discover 125,000 Gorillas in Congo Forests

EDINBURGH, Scotland —

Wildlife researchers said Tuesday that they've discovered 125,000 western lowland gorillas deep in the forests of the Republic of Congo, calling it a major increase in the animal's estimated population.

The Wildlife Conservation Society, based at New York's Bronx Zoo, and the Republic of Congo said their census counted the newly discovered gorillas in two areas of the northern part of the country covering 18,000 square miles.

Previous estimates, dating to the 1980s, put the number of western lowland gorillas at less than 100,000. But the animal's numbers were believed to have fallen by at least 50 percent since then due to hunting and disease, researchers said.

The newly discovered gorilla population now puts their estimated numbers at between 175,000 to 225,000.

"This is a very significant discovery because of the terrible decline in population of these magnificent creatures to Ebola and bush meat," said Emma Stokes, one of the research team.

The researchers in the central African nation of Republic of Congo — neighbor of the much larger Congo — worked out the population figures by counting the sleeping "nests" gorillas make. The creatures are too reclusive and shy to count individually.

Craig Stanford, professor of anthropology and biology at the University of Southern California, said he is aware of the new study.

"If these new census results are confirmed, they are incredibly important and exciting, the kind of good news we rarely find in the conservation of highly endangered animals."

He added that independent confirmation will be valuable because nest counts vary depending on the specific census method used.

Western lowland gorillas are one of four gorilla subspecies, which also include mountain gorillas, eastern lowland gorillas and Cross River gorillas. All are labeled either endangered or critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

While calling the new census important, Stokes said it does not mean gorilla numbers in the wild are now safe.

"Far from being safe, the gorillas are still under threat from Ebola and hunting for bush meat. We must not become complacent about this. Ebola can wipe out thousands in a short period of time," she said.

The report was released as primatologists in Edinburgh, Scotland warned that nearly half of the world's 634 types of primates are in danger of becoming extinct due to human activity.

That figure, carried in a comprehensive review of the planet's apes, monkeys, and lemurs, included primate species and subspecies.

Scientists meeting at the International Primatological Society Congress in Edinburgh said they hoped the report will help spur global action to defend mankind's nearest relatives from deforestation and hunting.

Primatologists warned that species from the giant mountain gorillas of central Africa to the tiny mouse lemurs of Madagascar are on the "Red List" for threatened species maintained by the IUCN.

The review was funded by Conservation International, the Margot Marsh Biodiversity Foundation, Disney's Animal Kingdom and the IUCN. It is part of an examination of the state of the world's mammals due to be released at the 4th IUCN World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain, in October.

"It is not too late for our close cousins the primates, and what we have now is a challenge to turn this around," said Russell A. Mittermeier, president of Conservation International and the chairman of the IUCN Species Survival Commission's primate specialist group.

"The review paints a bleak picture. Some primates are quite literally being eaten to extinction. But it is by no means a doomsday scenario. There is a lot of will here among these scientists in Edinburgh and in the countries where primates live."

I am so sorry for what you've been through CBB!  The way you handled it is very admirable!  Those people are ruthless and will say anything.  Years ago my husband broke his hand, when the cast was removed it was very obvious that the break had healed incorrectly; which required surgery and pins to correct it.  Needless to say he couldn't work for a while and we got behind on some bills.  Our credit card balances were always very small and affordable until they started tacking on all the "hidden" charges that occur when you can't make your payment on time.  I took all the nasty calls to heart and made myself very sick which just caused more bills!  I'll never forget some of the things that were said...my husband wasn't a MAN since he chose to pay the electricity bill instead of their's...and so on.  Go get 'em girl! 

We've had the same experience, here, and I was the one who had to take the calls.  In the past decade, DH was unemployed a couple of times for long periods...the 1st was downsizing of a job he held for 26 years and the second was due to back problems which prevented him from performing his duties & they would not provide a light duty job while he was mending.  My salary only went so far and the boys were still in college.  We were hurt by the hidden costs, as well.  One card went over limit due to this and I'm still paying it off.  I worked with people who had once been in the collection business and know through this association that there is no sympathy or consideration given to the 'debtor'....they are hired and compensated based on their ability to collect, at all cost...no mercy.

CBB's circumstances are a little different and I'm glad she took the measures she did.  Hopefully, her credit record will be restored.

I DO understand! This particular account is a little different, but make no mistake, I am struggling to keep up with the accounts that did legitimately fall on me due to my ex's bankruptcy. My divorce papers clearly state that all marital debt was awarded to him by the court, and it means nothing now that he filed. All of the payment history comes to me as well. So every late payment will stay with me for years. Get a load of this: The Chase account that was mine all along had been bumped from 10% to a 29% interest rate. I had a $20,000.00 credit limit, and the balance was $7,000.00. Never a late payment. Without notice, Chase dropped the limit to $5,000.00 and bumped up the interest rate because the balance exceeded it!!! I busted my butt to pay it off as quickly as I could and that's how I ended up with a credit. I wanted to BE SURE I sent enough to cover the fees.

I made a payment late by one day ( next day bank posting that I hadn't figured on ) on the mortgage trying to throw everything I could at the 29% Chase account and sure enough, that one is listed as a negative account on my Credit Report.

People who are doing all they can should be treated with respect. That simple courtesy should be afforded to everyone.

CBB you are allowed to write a letter of explanation & request it be attached to your credit report.
Honest creditors will take the circumstances into account.

You can legally take your ex to court and sue him for reimbursement. If your divorce decree states he is to pay this bill, you are entitled to reimbursement. Take him to small claims court depending on what the limit is in your state.


Then copy all your correspondence and write a letter similar to what you explained and send it to the State DA's office of your state.

Don't walk away, you've done a great job so far correcting what they have done.

And write the President/CEO of Chase and request a letter of explanation/apology for the wrong they did so that you can send that to your other creditors that were impacted by Chase's illegal credit procedures.

If that doesn't work, sue Chase for all damages + pain/sufferage (your hair loss/loss of sleep etc)
They'll settle out of court. Find an attorney who will take your case on contingency - that way he/she will work for their money.

And know that you are a good person, you did the right thing. Just be happy, don't let anyone steal your joy!

CBB-I am proud of you for sticking up for what is right. Stress is so hard on a person and I am sorry you had to go through that.

We returned a leased car and then got a bill for thousands, saying a lot of things were wrong with the car. One of them was the battery, and we had a receipt for a new battery that was just put in a few months prior. They also said the car would not drive and gave us a written receipt for it (now considering we drove it to a spot in a line where cars were being dropped off, I would like to know how they thought we got the car returned.) We got an attorney and it took over a year to get it all worked out. We were not going to pay for things we knew were not wrong with the car and it was next to perfect when we returned it. Anyhow, it stayed on our credit report for a long time, in fact it might still be on it. Even though they were the ones at fault. Every time we apply for anything, we have to explain what the situation was.

I have heard that Chase is one of the worst for harrassing people. It is not fair, and it is not right.  ::MonkeyNoNo::

Comedian Bernie Mac dies at age 50

Comedian Bernie Mac died early Saturday in a Chicago-area hospital from complications due to pneumonia, his publicist told CNN. He was 50. Publicist Danica Smith did not provide additional details, and asked that his family's privacy be respected.

He also had sarcoidosis which I'm sure was a contributing factor.  Very sad, he was way too young to die:

Bernie Mac’s wife and daughter were with him until the very end, says the late comic's sister-in-law in a personal and touching interview with PEOPLE that took place Saturday.

Speaking of a heartbreaking moment between her younger sister, Rhonda, and the 50-year-old actor-comedian – who succumbed to complications from pneumonia in a Chicago hospital at 2 a.m. Saturday – Mary Ann Grossett says that the night before Mac died, "He struggled for his life. He couldn't breathe.

"He opened his eyes on his own and looked at Rhonda. She called his name, and he opened his eyes and nodded to her. She smiled at him and told him, 'Don't leave me … 'I'm waiting for you to come back.' He shrugged his shoulders, and she said that's when she knew he was tired. He signaled to her that his body was tired."

Rhonda, Mac’s wife since 1977, and their 30-year-old daughter, Je'Niece, 30, were with him when he died. "[The doctors] were working on him," says Grossett. "They tried to resuscitate him two times. One time he came back for about an hour. Then he went into cardiac arrest the second time."

Prior to that, the couple had last communicated on July 31. "He told his wife [non-verbally] that he could breathe on his own, and he wanted the ventilator out. He motioned that he wanted it out," says Grossett.


Lung Disease Contributed
The sister-in-law says Mac's inflammatory lung disease contributed to his death. "He had sarcoidosis, but it was in remission," she says. "But because he had it, his immune system was compromised. He had an infection ... He was on a new medication that suppresses the immune system, and that's where the pneumonia came from."

She reveals that Mac – having trouble breathing and running a fever – was actually hospitalized on July 24, eight days before the date given for his admittance. The actor was diagnosed with pneumonia and immediately placed on a ventilator.

"He was critically ill when he was in the hospital," says Gossett. "He was in intensive care the whole time."

She adds that doctors kept the star sedated, although he was conscious at times and he contracted a second strain of pneumonia while in the hospital.


His Wife's Reaction
Of her widowed sibling (like Mac, Rhonda is 50), Grossett says, "She’s devastated. However, she's at peace about his transition because of her faith in God. Her faith is what is sustaining her."

She says of the couple's enduring union, "They had 30 years of marriage. That's unprecedented in today's time, particularly for celebrities. That brings joy to her. They loved each other and respected each other on a daily basis. She was by his side to the very end."

Recalling the couple's early years, when they were still in their teens, Grossett says, "When they started dating, he said, 'Girl, you better come on board this train, because I'm going to be rich.' And her response was, 'Okay,' and they were married. That's how he charmed her, with his sense of humor."

She adds, "When they got married they were kids. He was 20 and she was 19. They both grew up together, and they both matured in this marriage.


'She's Going to Miss Him Dearly'
"What she will treasure the most is the fact that she was his wife for 30 years – and not only was she his wife, but she was his best friend. She's going to miss him dearly."

Mac’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 15, at an undisclosed location. The family requests that donations be made to the Bernie Mac Foundation for Sarcoidosis, 40 E. Ninth St., Suite 601, Chicago IL 60605.

Spanish Sweetshop Owner Finds Homer Simpson Euro

A Spanish sweetshop owner was counting cash in his till in the city of Aviles when he came across a coin bearing the likeness of Homer Simpson instead of Spanish King Juan Carlos, Reuters reported.

"The coin must have been done by a professional, the work is impressive," Jose Martinez told Reuters.

The carver didn't touch the other side of the one euro coin, displaying the map of Europe, Reuters reported.

"I've been offered 20 euros for it," Martinez said.

Reuters reported no other coins bearing the likeness of Simpson have been found in circulation.

I've only sailed Carnival a couple of times. Princess is actually my favorite and where the majority of my cruises are. I am looking forward to the Fantasy. She's in drydock right before we sail so it will be like a brand new ship. I like the size, too. The Caribbean Princess wore me out with all the walking from 1 place to another.

I wish I could have done a pre-cruise stay in NOLA but it wasn't possible with DH's work schedule. I'm flying in early the day before we sail and leaving upon debarkation.

We're doing the Western Caribbean (again). I've actually done this several times. We only booked this one to sail with some friends of ours. I may not even get off the ship in Progresso. Nothing much interests me there. I've had my fill of the ruins. In Cozumel, we booked an all inclusive at Nachi Cocom. The rest will be relaxation.

Progresso is the replacement stop for Costa Maya after the hurricane destruction. It really doesn't have much there except the ruins. There's also a pier that is so long, you have to take shuttle buses to get to the end of it. Rumor has it that Costa Maya may possibly be ready by the time we sail, so there could be an itinerary change as Costa was the original destination.

OMG, the taxi drivers are worse than any place I have ever been. My first cruise there, our driver hit a cat in the road while doing 100 mph, and didn't even stop. I was sick to my stomach all day. When we finally stopped to eat, we we went to Carlos & Charlies. Honest to heavens, the menu has "moo, oink & peep" as a meal. I had cat flashbacks and couldn't eat after I saw that. And did you know that milk is almost impossible to get in Mexico? They serve their coffee with canned milk. It's a taste I cannot explain and don't ever want to experience again.

Thanks for the heads up on the turkey & dressing. I will make sure to try it.

BTW, I heard on a cruise site I belong to, that Carnival may be moving the Fantasy to Mobile in 2009. Wonder what will take her place in NOLA?

Update

We have decided to get on with the rebuilding of our home. We haven't settled with the insurance but we really need to move  forward. (The air conditioner in this rental was out all last week  ::MonkeyShocked::  ) Our builder is going to run the plans through the city which should take 3-6 weeks (I think). It is so exciting!

One of the ladies who lost their home is a writer. She is working on a book of stories from the firestorm.

Another lady is an artist and has been commissioned by some to do paintings of things they lost so they will have something to help them remember.

The 1 year anniversary of the fire is October 22. I can't believe it. That is only 2 months away. I often think of Katrina and wonder how those people are doing. Things do not move very fast in the aftermath of a disaster. At least not as fast as we thought they would.

Mark Twain, whose daughter died of meningitis, said losing a child is like your house burning down. At first you’re crushed by the calamity that the house is gone. And then, over the months and years to follow, you remember all the precious and irreplaceable things that were found only in that house. The ripples of grief stretch out of sight.

Shell ~ You must be very excited indeed, getting closer to getting your home rebuilt.  I remember when you first posted about the fire.  You said it's been almost a year. ::MonkeyNoNo::  I hope it won't be too much longer before you and your family are out of temporary housing and into your own home again, to start creating memories of home, together.  It reminds me of Dorothy:  "There's no place like home.  There's no place like home."  Please keep us posted.

National Missing Persons Organization Let's Bring Them Home continues their efforts in the search for missing man, Clinton Nelson.   Nelson was last see on Friday, September 1, 2006 in the vicinity of Ward Lane and Highway 80 in Princeton, Louisiana.

This weekend represents the second anniversary of Nelson's disappearance. Nelson's family, along with law enforcement and missing persons organizations Let's Bring Them Home and the Kristen Foundation have assisted in efforts to recover Nelson.  However, to date, Nelson has not been recovered.

Nelson was last seen on Friday, September 1, 2006 at approximately 8:30pm leaving a friend's house in the vicinity of Ward Lane and Highway 80 in Princeton, Louisiana.  It is believed that Nelson is deceased.  Currently there are rewards totaling $15,000 for the recovery of Nelson's remains or the arrest and conviction for those involved in his disappearance.

"We, like Clinton's family," says Amy Smith, Executive Director of Let's Bring Them Home, "will never stop searching for Clinton.  We will never let people forget he's missing until he's found."

Never letting people forget that Nelson is missing is the key to solving this mystery.  One of the ways  Nelson's family and Let's Bring Them Home are accomplishing this goal is asking for the public to support the drafting of Clinton's Law.

"Clinton's law is a simple plea," explains Smith.  "When Clinton went missing it took law enforcement almost five days before they would take a report.  By the time cell phone tower records were subpoenaed, the tower records had been purged.  Any help those records could have provided were lost with Clinton."

The call to action is an effort between Nelson's family, Let's Bring Them Home and concerned citizens across the United States to change law enforcement procedures in missing person's cases by requiring law enforcement to pull cell phone records once the missing person's report has been filed.

"We know that it could have made a difference in Clinton's case," says Carolyn Johnson, Nelson's mother.  "Our lives might be different today had those records been pulled in a timely manner.

"To support the drafting of Clinton's Law, as well as to remember his disappearance, the family of Nelson is asking home owners in the Princeton, Louisiana area to leave their porch lights on September 1st to symbolize "lighting the way home for Clinton."  In addition, Let's Bring Them Home is asking business owners to request posters to distribute of Nelson in their stores, as well as place the words "Where is Clinton Nelson" on store marquees.

The report counted 42,000 black-shanked douc langurs along with 2,500 yellow-cheeked crested gibbons in Cambodia's Seima Biodiversity Conservation Area, an estimate that represents the largest known populations for both species in the world.

Monkey mugs woman for egg tarts at Hong Kong bus stop
Hong Kong - A 25-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being mugged by a monkey for a box of egg tarts at a bus stop in Hong Kong, police said Monday. The primate struck seconds after the woman got off a bus for a Sunday picnic in rural Sai Kung Country Park in Hong Kong's New Territories near the Chinese border.

The monkey scratched her arm as it grabbed the box of egg tarts, police said. The shocked victim was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries, a spokesman said.

Hong Kong's rural New Territories are home to thousands of grey macaque monkeys, whose population has exploded in recent years because of the population shift to urban areas.

The monkeys usually keep clear of humans, but occasionally, hungry lone males will prey on hikers from the city unused to seeing monkeys and arriving in country parks with bags of food.

8-foot mechanical ape stolen from Maine store

EAST MACHIAS, Maine (AP) -- A giant gorilla that's been a longtime fixture outside a flea market store in East Machias has gone missing and its owner is asking that the mechanical ape be returned, no questions asked.

Lowell Miller didn't realize that his gorilla had been stolen from Sandy's Sales on U.S. 1 until closing time Sunday. Miller thought his clerk had wheeled the ape inside, and the clerk thought Miller had.

Miller said he was amazed that anyone would steal such a heavy object. Valued at about $1,500, it has a cement platform and is equipped with motors that turn the gorilla sideways and make its arms go up and down.

State police have put out an all-points-bulletin on the primate, which they suspect may be holed up in some college students' apartment.

Stolen gorilla found in Vermont cornfield

EAST MACHIAS, Maine — A power-driven gorilla that has been missing since the Labor Day weekend turned up over the weekend in a cornfield in Swanton, Vermont.
The kidnapper, who apparently was not monkeying around once he knew that the police were on his trail, dumped the hot gorilla in the country cornfield to avoid being caught.  ::MonkeyLaugh::

The gorilla that belonged to Sandy’s Sales was taken from in front of the Route 1 store the Sunday before Labor Day. For a time, police believed it might be in a student’s apartment in the Machias area.

It was only after the owner of the Ohio-based company that had built the mechanical monkey got involved that things began to happen. Ken Booth made a video and put it on YouTube quoting a story that ran in the Bangor Daily News about the missing monkey. He offered a $500 reward.

Shortly after the cyberspace detective work started, there was a response from the kidnapper. That video was also posted on YouTube.

Dressed in black from head to toe, the masked man working with a sock puppet said he wanted $1 million — then said he was just kidding. Finally, he said he just wanted to unload the beast.

Within hours, the mechanical giant was picked up by the Vermont State Police and taken to the Troop A barracks in St. Albans, Vermont.

RE Metrolink and freight train wreck

An LAPD officer has been killed in it.

A USC engineer was saying it takes 3 things to create a wreck. I have heard that in the past from airline pilots.

Just before the Metrolink started up the incline to the tunnel, there was an extra track where the Metrolink was to wait for the freight train coming out of the tunnel and to past.

Used to film westerns up in those rocks and it used to be that teens played with changing the signals in the Santa Susanna Mts. but I guess now it is done by computer.

This should NOT have happened.

 I have been busy trying to get my life in order and at my age... isnt real easy to have to start all over again.  I struggle bigtime.. but I am doing it with alot of determination. I was never one to ask anyone for help.... I went without DSL for months and had dial up.. which sucked.  Finally DSL was offered here recently.. I moved to the country WHICH I am having a hell of a time getting used to. Umm.. can you say.. snakes? Bats? Critters of all sorts? lol
 I am going to be a Gramma.. and VERY happy.. My daughter and huby are expecting... she was long ago and miscarried.. :(   shes scared right now.. so keep her in prayers~! TYIA ~!!!
  I also crashed my car not long ago.. well a month ago.. just got it back last week. Went to visit a firend of mine.. cause I could.. no man to bitch at me for leaving the house. Well...... My bit of freedom that night sucked. Was on my way home.. deer jumps out in front of my car.. UI was fortunate enough to be able to borrow a car to get me back and forth to work.  WORK.. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. The job I have now I do like.. but the company itself SUCKS. I have never seen anything like it in my life.. My  daughter works there as well. Last week. I played hooky and called off... ::cough cough::... I got dressed up and went over to the 911 center WHICH is directly across the st where I am living now. 911 was always my FAV job.. and where my heart is.. to HELP OTHERS!  Most of you know about my voice crap.. I have been spending time doing vocal things... and went over there.. talked to my old SUPV'S.. and they told me my voice is fine.. and others there sounds wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more like shit..   I really have been thru alot lately.. NOT looking for pity or sympathy.. I lost my sons dad back in April.. he was young.. and although we hadnt been together for years.. he always held a special place in my heart. I actually took work off to be at the hospital with him and my son and his parents.  My ex inlaws always treated me like gold... they still do. His BP went up bad.. he was ok for a few days.. then all of a sudden he went into full cardiac arrest... ::MonkeyWaa:: ::MonkeyWaa:: Slipped into a coma.. I sat by his bedside every day and night.. ::MonkeyWaa:: I have know him since we were 15 yrs old..  dated him then... eventually married his cute butt years later. I wanted so much to be able to help.. all I could do was be there for our son and his parents. My kid is the SPITTING image of his dad.. so  much..its almost spooky. Well decision time came.. and I sure as shit didnt want to be part of it..BUT.. seeing how I was there everyday.. I had to be part of.. take him off of machines.. or let him on to live a life as a complete braindead vegetable..  ::MonkeyWaa:: ::MonkeyWaa:: ::MonkeyWaa:: ::MonkeyWaa:: ::MonkeyWaa::  I asked the neurologist WHY make me part of it... she said becuase you have been here everyday..  ::MonkeyWaa:: I told her to talk to his parents first and our son... who is 18 .. almost 19.. let them decide then I will throw my 2 cetns in.
  They made the decision to let him go..   ::MonkeyWaa:: ::MonkeyWaa:: ::MonkeyWaa::.. it was mine as well.. and it was HARD..  I would never want to with that upon anyone. I was in his room when they were unhooking him from life support.. I got bitched at daily from nurses for sitting at his bedside and holding his hand and talking to him.. they told me HE CANT HEAR YOU.. I said Bullshit.,.People in comas CAN hear.. and I want him to know we are here for himj. The day he was taken off support.. I leaned over him.. I asked him to be our sons Gaurdian Angel and said I know thats a big job for yah. He.. although in a coma.. had tears rolling down his face.. which I wiped away..  ::MonkeyWaa::I know he heard me..I just KNOW he did.  ALot of things have happend since his death and I feel hes not only our sons Angel but mine as well. He came to me last week. some folks may think I am NUTZ.. or  know what I mean. He came to me plain as day.. why me? No idea.. but wanted me to let our son and his parents know he is fine.. odd things happen at his parents too.. he told me he is there alot~!!!  HIs colgnoe smell is there often at times too. His parents have given me alot of things of his.. He was their only child.. all they have left now is our son.. their Grandson.

There are 2 ten story buildings in Houston that are housing the elderly with no electrity, food or water. These buildings have people with  all types of medical problems so medical attention is also needed.

They have asked US to do what we can to help these people.

There are so many problems that can cause a dog to lose its appetite, that I don't even want to hazard a guess. I hope the vet can find out what is wrong with the poor thing. I know they stop eating when they have tummy problems, heart problems, kidney problems, etc. It's so difficult with older dogs too. Please let us know what you find out.

I don't know if it's a possibility where you live, but here in the mid-U.S. there were some recent warnings about a particular kind of blue-green algae in ponds/small lakes that was having a similar effect on dogs who drank from/swam in that water. In the local news article, they interviewed a couple of people whose dogs were made quite ill.  I have a soft spot for our canine friends, so couldn't resist passing this along. If the dog has been in contact with pond/lake water it might be worth mentioning to rule it out... If it's a remote possibility, I can try to locate the news article for further info...

Considering Brandi is fifteen years old ... we were expecting at some point she would begin to show signs of slowing down.  However ... the happenings of the past three days were so sudden.  One day she is running all over the our property like a puppy chasing my hubby who is on the tractor mower.  That night she ate normally ... she loves eating.  The next day ... she appeared very lethargic ... not interested in even going for a walk.  She appeared to be thirsty because she would go to her bowl but ... then turn away.  Then there is her lack of appetite ... no food for two days.  We could not even entice her with "people" food.

The intervenus the vet gave her today does seems to have perked her up a bit but ... then again it could be that she is just so happy to be home.

Hopefully ... Xrays taken today will reveal the problem and ... hopefully the problem is not serious.

No stagnant water around but ... two days prior to Brandi experiencing these symptons rain was forcasted so my husband fertilized about an acre in lawn.  However ... he has done this several times over the years and ... Brandi has always had the run of the property ....

Gizmo ... I will provide an update on this thread tomorrow.  Brandi will be taken back to the pet hospital first thing tomorrow morning.  Hopefully ... the xrays taken today will reveal something.  Also ... if she does not eat or drink tonight ... she will require some fluids and nutrients by intervenus.

Hey ... maybe Brandi has caught some bug and ... it will pass.

Janet.....I am praying for a speedy recovery......and  hope it's jsut a tummy bug....my best friend Riley, who I lost 2 years ago at age 15, had some dental problems and he would go through spells when he wouldn't eat or drink...make sure the VET checks the teeth and gums really good.....please keep us posted.

Sunny ... I am sorry about Riley.  After fifteen years our dogs become like members of the family.  Our son is quit upset.  Brandi was given to him when he was 10 years old and ... he spent one on one time with his dog every day until he go married a couple of years ago.  This my hubby and I took over.  Hubby spends a lot of time keeping up our property and ... Brandi has been his constant companion.

Brandi is still eating dried food and ... her teeth are checked every year when she has her checkup, deworming and shots.  Every month our son even brushes her teeth ... gives her a bath or ... takes her to a doggy salon for a bath.    However ... I will mention her teeth to the vet tomorrow.

I somehow think the problem could be a bug because of how suddenly Brandi lost her appetite and ... didn't even want to drink.  Anyways ... that is what I hope.

A bed of old blankets has been made up in the kitchen for her tonight.  This way I can easily check on her during the night.  Normally ... I would have to worry about her sneaking into the rest of the house but ... she is so weak she is wobbly on her legs when she got up a little while ago and ... whined at the door to be let out to do her thing.  Our son and DIL were still here so ... son actually carried her down and up the back stairs.

In the morning hubby and I will be taking Brandi back to the vet and ... hopefully he will have the results of the xrays.

Janet, I hope the vet finds what's bothering your pup.  We've been through this with our Boston Terrior (10) this year......2 different episodes, 6 months apart.  I'll save the details for later.

Brandi is much better this morning.  Hubby thinks her extreme weakness last night was from the effects of the sedation that was given her yesterday.

My hubby made oatmeal porridge for himself this morning and ... he offered a bowl to Brandi and she ate it all.

We will be loading her shortly into our van and taking her back to the vet this morning.  After a checkup ... I have a feeling we will be turning around and bringing her right back home.  Anyways ... xrays were taken yesterday and ... results should be available.

Well ... it has only been a little over an hour since we left for the pet hospital with Brandi and ... we are all now home.

The results of yesterday's Xrays were not ready but ... the vet was impressed with Brandi's improvement.  Other than giving her antibiotics twice a day ... we were told just to keep an eye on her.

NJSons ... before I had a chance to ask the vet about a recall on certain brands of dog food ... it was him that advised us to chuck out whatever dried food was left in the bag Brandi was currently being fed from.  It was just to be on the safe side that no contamination had gotten into the bag once it had been opened.  I don't think so because upon opening a bag ... the food is immediately transferred into a clean sealed container.  The vet assured us that the brand was not included in any recall.  However ... I will do some research prior to purchasing another bag of dried dog food.  For the next week or so ... Brandi will be on soft foods.

I'm glad Brandi is improving while on the meds.  That's a good sign.  Also glad the food wasn't on the current list of recalls. 

We've had a recurrence of Lyme in our Boston Terrior back in June....even with Frontline use & prior vaccination (Vet claims this can happen with canines).  She tested positive for that, and in addition, had a low platelet count suggesting hemolytic anemia.  According to the vet, this is contrary to Lyme statistics, BUT, with prednisone treatment, her blood is now okay.  I've done a lot of reading on the subject, and am not convinced that the Lyme didn't send her immune system into a tailspin.  The vaccination for Lyme, also is suspect, according to some articles I've read. She's off the prednisone, now, because it started to manifest symptoms of Cushings Disease, while we were weaning her off of it.  She's also almost finished with an antibiotic for gastric distress and seems back to her old self.  Of course, she'll need a follow up blood test to be sure she's out of the woods with the platelet issue. 

You've already noted how our pets are a part of the family and keeping them healthy and safe is part of our responsibility to them.  She's one of our babies...just like your Brandi.

People get on to keep up with this and they start from the beginning and its all our o/t crap.  I can see their point!  It happens and it frustrates me, well actually I just skip it!
