Lead investigator hospitalized after fall from motorcycle


4:08 p.m. The lead detective investigating the Caylee Anthony case was hospitalized overnight after breaking his leg.

Detective Yuri Melich, the investigator who told a judge in July that he believed Caylee Anthony was likely dead and her mother was the person of interest, was released this morning.





 Melich was injured while completing re-certification training for the sheriff's office motors unit, according to a sheriff's spokesman.

Melich's injuries are not life threatening and will not hinder the investigation.

"John Allen is the supervisor and one of the lead investigators on this case who has basically been working side-by-side with Yuri since the beginning," said spokesman Jim Solomons of how the deputy's injuries will affect the case. "We'll miss [Yuri] but the case will continue to move forward."

Solomons anticipated that Melich would take some time off to heal, though the amount of time was unclear.

I am right there with you on that one Dolce....I am thrown for a loop by this move....that child does not look anything like Kaylee....did LE just do it to throw the Anthonys off a bit?  Possibly in the hopes of that they would let down their guard and maybe unwittingly give a little more info?  I don't know...just trying to understand why this happened...Anybody?

Caylee Look-Alike Leads Deputies To Swarm Volusia County Home

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Caylee Anthony doesn't have a twin, but a second little girl named Kaylee looks a lot like her and investigators thought so, too. They secretly swarmed a family home in Volusia County about an hour's drive from where the Anthonys live.

Deputies said they were checking out an anonymous tip and they said the only way to get to the bottom of it was to go to the house in question. It turns out they found Kaylee, but not the one everyone is looking for.

It was the striking similarity between missing Caylee and this Kaylee that brought deputies to the home of Wayne and Kim Tupper in the middle of the night.

"They all filed in. There was about five deputies and then they asked if they could see my daughter," Wayne Tupper told Eyewitness News.

That's when they got the real surprise.

"So, I'm waking her up, 'Kay-kay, wake up.' And then the last thing I said was 'Kaylee,'" Wayne said.

The Tuppers needed family photos and a birth certificate to prove she isn't the little girl who's been missing for so long.

"We don't know if somebody saw us at a store, if they were driving by," Kim said. "Could you imagine if I was at a store one day and somebody thought it was her and they didn't let me leave?"

But the Tuppers said they're most frustrated by the Anthonys' accusations that authorities aren't looking for Caylee. She says their experience proves otherwise.

"If it was our daughter, I would expect them to do the same, but they are doing their jobs," Kim said.

Even in his report, a deputy wrote that the girl looked a lot like the missing child. Of course, there are some differences. The Volusia County Kaylee is a little older and spells her name with a "K."

No immunity for Caylee's mom, prosecutor says

The sheriff's office in Orange County, Florida, now says that lab tests have confirmed that a decomposing body had been in the trunk of a car driven by Casey Anthony.

Investigators have called Casey Anthony, 22, a "person of interest" in Caylee's disappearance. She faces charges of child neglect, obstruction and making false statements in the case.

"[FBI] laboratory evidence, along with additional evidence that has not been made public, leads investigators to the belief there is a strong probability that Caylee is deceased," the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

"If any evidence to the contrary is provided, it will be vigorously pursued," the statement added.

Forensics tests confirmed there had been a decomposing body in the car, the statement said. Detectives disclosed at a July hearing the trunk contained hair samples appearing to belong to Caylee, a strong odor and suspicious stain that glowed under black light.

I work with children every day.  I don't believe those are secondary teeth,  she would have to be around 6 years old to get those. Most kids don't start losing their primary teeth until they are at the end of Kindergarten....  Although this girl isn't our caylee, I can see how people might say there are similarities....the nose is similar,  It could be caylee if she was a year or two older.  I'd say this girl with the runny nose is under 5.  JMHO, and I mean no disrespect at disagreeing with your statement :)

We do not all carry around a Caylee pic with us to compare every child to.  Just after seeing the side by side I think the resembelance is not there.  Had I seen her in a store far away, well maybe, given its close to the Orlando area where she was spotted and the name is the same (minus the K).

As always I'm 5 pages behind but I wanted to post that it is ointment on the child's face that spells her name Kaylee. If you look at her nose you will see  small sore and no it is not a cold sore nor anything bad.

Hmm..  my brain cells.. all two of them.. momentarily sparked.   ::MonkeyLaugh::  I'm thinking she could be prosecuted for not telling LE what Casey told her, that is evidentiary or something to that effect. However, does she actually have a legal obligation to call the cops the moment she hears something? She was in that home to gain some kind of confidence, even if she wasn't allowed to ask any questions or talk about the case with Casey.  IF what Casey told her is the truth.. then Im thinking the girl didn't want to break the trust Casey had to share this news with her.

You would think that LE would offer immunity for this kind of info!  Very strange!

Phew! Thank you for posting that. I was worried about the poor little thing being embarrassed.

I used to be a teacher, and I can tell you that many little girls resemble Caylee Anthony.  I am not at all sure that I could pick Caylee out of a lineup now, if she suddenly appeared alive and among other little girls her age with brown hair.  I think she looks a bit different in all her photographs.  In one, her smile is kinda crooked.  In another, it is very straight and even.  Her cheeks look chubbier in some pix.  Caylee and its variations are also very, very popular names now.  I have a niece named Kayleigh.  I can understand why police would go to the home after such a tip. 

Now as to the circus outside their home last night, why don't the Anthonys just go on Jerry Springer and get it over with.  They could take a water hose, a hammer and a baseball bat and toss around a few chairs and let the F-word fly.  I am sure some protesters would volunteer to jeer at them for everyone's entertainment.

I think Cindy looked drunk and glassy-eyed when she was waving that bat around and when George was pulling her away and she seemed ready to lurch again.  It is a tacky sideshow, and while the kids outside were yelling and tossing things, the Anthonys should have stayed indoors and called the cops again.  Neither of them should have been outside, because that escalates the situation and they could either get hurt or hurt someone.

Interesting, that Miss Casey was so very demanding and indignant when she called 911.  No call for Caylee but she must get her sleep before sitting around on her butt all the next day.

Do they sign something to keep their mouths shut  about anything they hear / see ?

Well, I just finished watching NG and feel completely let-down after all the waiting today for some bog news. The only thing I thought of while watching was that they can't get an insanity defense now, because she is completely with it (and telling the truth--mostly) on those 9-1-1 calls.

It may not be criminal liability they are concerned with - it may be civil liability, particularly if she learned something while covered by any type of confidentiality agreement. Scary thought, but a possibility... JMO

Let me see if I got it all, this is what we've learned from Nancy Grace:

1.  For some unknown reason LEE gave the phone records to Leanard Padilla.  The phone records show no calls between Casey and Zanny.

2.  The attorney for the female person that stayed in the house with Casey when she was out on Padilla's bail won't let her talk.  So we are wondering what she may have been told.

3.  Cindy asked Lee to find Casey and Caylee on July 3rd and we know that Lee did at least reach Casey by phone on July 3rd.

4.  Lee lied about when he heard the name Zanny the nanny

I missed that!  Did anyone get a video of it?  I have often thought Cindy is either drugged or drunk.   She has often slurred her words, and I think if she was in her right mind, she would stay in the house.  The Anthonys seem to be asking for this negative attention.

The tone in Casey's voice is always the same.  It's the same in the police interrigations as it was on the 911 call.  Casey has NO real emotions.

I was saying that the phone records shown on nancy grace were on the date 6/9/08..they spanned from 2-about 8am..casey reported that caylee was missing since the 9th..well that would be the earliest part of the 9th...but we already know that she was last seen on 6/15..if casey still has caylee on 6/9 and casey is up all night as indicated by her phone records..why is she up all night and if she is not sleeping at night when is she sleeping...and who is taking care of caylee at that time...i find it very difficult to wake up at a descent time if i am up late to take care of my own daughter who is almost 3.  i certainly would never stay up all night because i would not be coherent enought to take care of my daughter the next day.

the female body guard - not an employee of Baez and under zero obligation to with-hold any info.

The only reason she has not agreed to speak is because SHE HAS INFO IMPORTANT TO THE CASE. The LE must have asked her not to reveal what she knows and it will be used in a trial or grand jury.

This must be important info that can be corroborated by Rob Dick.

This case is certainly a sad one. I feel it is a difficult to come to a rational and peaceful resolution to this. if i break this case down to its lowest common denominator I find that the biggest problem is respect. Casey has not shown an ounce of respect for anyone. Not even herself. Life is precious and the possibilities for what a young person can become are boundless and she robbed little Caylee of that opportunity. Whatever means she used to rid the world of that precious little soul may never be known. What we should focus on is giving the respect and life that Caylee might have known. This case will be shut someday whether by being solved or loss of public interest, however Caylees life should mean more than that. Perhaps we should, as a society, start some sort of an orphanage where mothers who do not want their children can give them to a SAFE adoption agency. We can not escape the fact that unplanned pregnancies occur, and we will never be able to make a women WANT her child. But we as a society could make a safe haven for those children in that situation. Let not one more child die from lack of wanting. We could call it the Caylee House.  Lets give her life back by giving hope to another in a hopeless situation. Let her soul not die in the back pages of some local paper, but keep her name out there as a reminder to respect each other. IF Casey had one ounce of respect for anything, she would have left her little girl with someone safe. If she herself could not do the responsible thing, perhaps someone else could have. I myself grew up in an orphanage.
I beg the citizens of the area around her home to get out there and protest.. protest... protest! what kind of society would we be if we just turned our heads and looked the other way. People make put down of the protesters, but I cant think of a better cause to scream about than this one. All the people who were willing to search- go to that home and unite- Lets not stand for this- do not cause more harm- do not start fights- but keep this little soul alive- scream until the truth comes out- then give Caylee the peace she deserves.

This is my first post. I've been lurking for a very long time. I found this site through WS but I much, much prefer the discussions that go on here. I just wanted to thank all of the "monkeys" for all of the valuable contributions to the case and introduce myself. I'm not sure that I'll post very often because you guys are always ahead of me by leaps and bounds... but, that's why I love this place.

There were two episodes with Lee or Chewbacca (sorry, don't remember who coined that, but I love it and it's hilarious) that really set off my alarms...

The first was that jailhouse phone call....strange on many levels....the obvious code talking, his tone towards his sister (more like how one would speak to a lover or a wife or maybe even a child), his leading questions....I know you Monkeys have discussed that one ad nauseum, but it was the first thing that set off my bells about him...

The second was a piece of video (from NG? Greta? don't remember...sorry...Percoset is kicking in) filmed right after LP bailed Casey out....LP was explaining to Lee why he bailed Casey out, what he planned to do....Lee was just giggling at him....it seemed so out of context, such an odd reaction, so inappropriate....it really struck me in much the same way as that moment in the Universal interrogation that NG played tonight when Casey begins giggling about Officer Wells' uncomfortable chair comment....I just don't think that in the midst of a true crisis like a missing toddler you could just start spontaneously giggling about ANYTHING....

Lee is someone to examine closely....he knows exactly what happened....even the Trojan Horse thinks so and he is my hero!

I just got off the phone with 2 different individuals from The Body Farm...one of them being the actual person who did the air sample with the Chloroform from the trunk of Casy's car....very interesting stuff here....I will not post names and #'s right now....But I will tell you...one of them did say to me...."I was not involved in the bone recovery"...

The FBI Is questioning Padilla?


SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- FBI agents are questioning a Sacramento bounty hunter about his involvement in a case of a Florida missing child.

Leonard Padilla made national headlines when he recently traveled to Florida to bail out Casey Anthony, 22.

Padilla said he isn't surprised that the FBI is now questioning him.

"It's standard procedure for law enforcement to interview participants in a case of this nature," he said. "They need to be sure they've got all their bases covered."

Anthony is being held in connection with the disappearance of her 3-year-old daughter Caylee.

Last month, Padilla said he thought he could help crack the case by getting Anthony out of jail.

After a few days in Florida, however, Padilla rescinded his bail and sent Anthony back to police custody.

Padilla said he thinks Anthony may face murder charges soon.

Anthony has already been charged with child neglect in the case.

Sounds like the FBI and LE is taking what LP says very seriously

You can bet that LE has all of Casey's text messages from June 9 to date.  If you think the phone records show her web of lies, just wait until these become public.  The mayor of Detroit had to resign when his text messages became part of an FOI suit, so I would imagine it will not be long before Casey's come out.

Can you actually get phone records that show your text messages.  I tried to get them before and was told that I couldn't.

I'm watching the Nat. hollaway story and its so sad.....I have a sister that has been missing for a long time and the more I listen to it the more it worries me.....We have never found out anything about my sister and I fear that this is what is gonna happen in this case although I hope not....It just brings back so many memories.....sorry.............

They all came out in the Detroit Mayor scandle.  He denied having an affair with his assistant, and each text message between them should they were doing the nasty.  I believe that the cell phone companies keep records of each and every text.  In this case they did.

I just checked into the text message retrieval..yes the police can obtain records or every text sent, where it was sent from, what time and what was sent and to who.  I am sure they already have this information...I cannot wait to learn of this information.

for a long long time....since 1972   and never knowing anything is hard...

It appears Casey Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez, botched his legal request to force detectives to stop testing evidence in the case.

Baez filed a motion with the Clerk of Court a week ago, asking for a halt to the lab testing being done by investigators to give him a chance to weigh in on how and where it's done.

Baez claimed investigators might be more concerned with cost and expediency than they are about accuracy and fairness.

The legal merits of his motion have yet to be decided, because Baez blundered by not notifying the judge assigned to the case about his motion. Nor has he asked the judge for a hearing.

So his motion sits in the clerk's office on the second floor of the courthouse going nowhere.

Anthony's trial for child neglect and lying to investigators is scheduled for November 17.

Eyewitness News asked Baez's public relations firm whether he plans to ask for a hearing, but the firm has not returned the call.

Eyewitness News also learned that Baez was almost an hour late for the sentencing of his client, Nilton Diaz, in a Lake County child abuse death the day Anthony was released the first time.

That same day, Baez shoved a reporter. He also kept the Lake County judge, the victim's family and witnesses waiting.

When he arrived, he made no apology.

Baez also requested a special hearing the day before that, asking for a delay in Diaz's sentencing, telling the judge he expected the media to follow him to Lake County after Anthony's release and that it would be prejudicial to Anthony.

Lake County Circuit Judge Mark Nacke denied Baez's request for that delay.

Baez ended up taking Casey back to her house the day she was released from jail before he headed to Lake County.

No reporters followed him to Lake County that day.

I think having Baez on this case is the best thing that could have happend.  He is bound to make a major mistake in the near future. He is in way over his head.  I believe he will be replaced somewhere along the line.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Several 911 calls for help from the mother of missing Caylee Anthony were released hours after aggressive protesters allegedly tossed rocks at her home and attacked her parents.

"There are protesters still outside of our home," Casey Anthony initially told a 911 operator during a 1:30 a.m. call.

It was the second call Thursday morning from the Anthony home concerning the protesters. 

"We already called about an hour and a half ago and it took officers 30 minutes to get here," Anthony said. "The protesters are now banging on our garage door and they've still been throwing things at our windows and our garage and now the media is here. My father is going outside and there is going to be a fight. So, please can you send people down here? There is now a physical altercation. You need to send vehicles immediately."

"It is getting physical?" the 911 operator said.

"Yes, it's getting physical right now," Anthony said.

"You see them physically fighting?" the 911 operator said.

"Yes, I see them physically fighting," Anthony said. "We have surveillance."

"OK, do you know if there are any weapons?" the 911 operator asked.

"I don't know if there are any weapons," Anthony said. "I know that my father is outside and so is my mother. So, send as many people as you possible can."

"And, who is this?" the 911 operator said.

"They need to be arrested because this can't keep happening," Anthony said. "We already had six or seven officers out here for almost 45 minutes and they did not do anything. And they are the same punks that were out here all night throwing stuff at our house."

"OK, stay on the line with me," the 911 operator said.

"I absolutely will, but they need to hurry up," Anthony said. "They were…they just left not that long ago."

"The police officers left?" the 911 operator said.

"The police officers just left at about 1 a.m.," Anthony said.

"A media van just pulled up and that is when all of this started happening," Anthony said.

"About how many people are out there?" the 911 operator asked.

"There are at least a dozen people and now two media vans," Anthony said. "And there is actually more people walking in from across the street."

"How many people are actually involved in the altercation?" the 911 operator asked.

"Channel 2 news has everything on tape already," Anthony said.

"How many people are involved in the altercation?" the 911 operator said.

"There are at least a dozen people," Anthony said. "My mom is out there now spraying people with the hose. My father is…they are trying to get them off the property. They are also trespassing on our property."

"Is it still happening?" the 911 operator asked.

"They are still standing on the property," Anthony said. "Yes, they are out there recording it."

"So, what about the physical altercation? Is it over?" the 911 operator asked.

"It's already over, yes," Anthony said.

"So, it is no longer physical?" a man asked Anthony.

"It is no longer physical," Anthony said. "But it was already physical. It's the protesters."

"Who are you?" the man asked.

"I'm the resident," Anthony said. "We have everything on tape, thanks to channel 2 and also our home surveillance."

"Was there any weapons involved?" the man asked.

"Not that I can see, no," Anthony said.

The call continued with Anthony explaining what her parents were doing.

"This needs to be taken care of immediately," Anthony said. "Both of my parents were hit by the protesters."

Deputies then arrived at the house.

Protester: It's To Break Them Down


Since Casey Anthony, was released from jail for a third time, protesters have continued to gather outside the home and become more aggressive.

Some protesters said they want to break the family down.

"(We're here) just to protest," a woman said outside of the home. "It's just to break them down. I think they are just protecting their daughter (Casey) which is the wrong thing to do in this case."

Grandmother Cindy Anthony ran outside with a bat in hand when the group began screaming at her husband, George, early Thursday.

A protester then reached over and tried to drag George Anthony off his property.

Local 6 reported that Cindy Anthony was pushed by a protester during the incident.

After the confrontation, George Anthony sprayed down the group of people with a hose.

By the time, officers arrived at the Anthony home, the group had left the neighborhood. No one was charged in the incident but deputies are looking at the Local 6 video.

The group of protesters yelled, "See you tomorrow" before driving away.


Search Taken To Puerto Rico


Meanwhile, George and Cindy Anthony are taking the search to find Caylee to Puerto Rico.

Cindy Anthony sat down with a Univision reporter for a one-on-one interview for the Spanish language TV station.

Anthony said she wanted to do the interview because of the large Puerto Rican viewership and she would like for the report to be played in Puerto Rico.

She said the family got tips about Caylee but could not give details about exactly where in Puerto Rico.

In the interview, Cindy Anthony said investigators told her weeks ago about evidence from the body farm.

According to investigators, the evidence suggests that Caylee is dead.

Cindy Anthony said she believes it was an intimidation tactic.

TV video states that the "fake Kaylee's" house was stormed in the middle of the night.

The "real Caylee's" house got kooky at around 1:00 am.

I didn't quite understand that exchange at all.  If she was told something by Casey, why would she have to "lawer up"?  Unless she told LE one thing, and now she is changing her story too?????

He does seem to have solid info at times. But I agree with you about piece-mealing it out.  Keeps him in the spotlight.

I'm sure LP can't tell all that he knows.  LE wouldn't fly to Calif if it wasn't something important to the case.

I do agree that Lee knows more than he's telling.

I got the impression LE was very unhappy with him for bailing her out and weren't about to give him the time a day.  Maybe they didn't, then had to - reason why they had to fly all the way out to LA?
